Items of mail are rapidly processed in a mail sampling system to determine if the mail is contaminated with a chemical or biological agent. The mail sampling system maintains a negative pressure in a containment chamber and includes a triggering sampler that makes a threshold determination regarding possible contamination, and a detecting sampler that obtains a sample for more detailed analysis in response to a signal from the triggering sampler. A sample of particulates collected from an item of mail is either removed for analysis or analyzed in the system to identify a contaminating agent. Optionally, the system includes an archiving sampler, which archives samples for subsequent processing and analysis, and a decontamination system, which is activated to decontaminate the mail if needed.

A system for at least partial closed-loop control of a medical condition is disclosed. The system includes at least one medical fluid pump. The medical fluid pump including a sensor for determining the volume of fluid pumped by the pump. Also, at least one continuous analyte monitor, and a controller. The controller is in communication with the medical fluid pump and the at least one continuous analyte monitor. The controller includes a processor. The processor includes instructions for delivery of medical fluid based at least on data received from the at least one continuous analyte monitor.

A gaseous fluorine detection system is provided which includes a generally enclosed sample cell containing a substrate comprising a material which interacts with fluorine gas to generate radiant energy. A gas sample of fluorine, the concentration levels of which are to be evaluated is flowed through the cell. A photomultiplier tube is positioned to receive the resulting radiant energy and generate an electrical output signal related to the level of said radiant energy. Means are provided for measuring the said photomultiplier output signal and relating same to the fluorine concentration of the gas sample provided to the cell.

A method of localizing a device, medical or otherwise, within a three dimensional environment, the method comprising: (a) transmitting time varying magnetic fields from at least three transmitters, (b) receiving the transmitted electromagnetic radiation as induced voltage signals from at least one receiver mounted on or within said device, and (c) a processing scheme for processing said received voltage signals in order to extract position and orientation localization information for said device, said processing scheme including correction for conducting materials in the vicinity by the use of information gathered from at least three distinct transmission frequencies for each of said transmitters.

A wireless sensor system is installed inside pipelines using sensors and wireless transceivers that are small, low-cost, and rugged. The objective is monitoring the pipeline and recommending maintenance and repair at specific locations in the pipeline. Maintenance includes detection of leaks and prevention of catastrophic failures as a result of internal corrosion or other damage, such as third party mechanical damage, using multitude of sensors. After establishing the wireless sensor network the network is activated so the sensor can make measurements periodically or continuously using instructions transmitted via the base station. The sensor data from the various sensors are transmitted inside the pipe and extracted to access points in the pipeline to a remote computer that stores the data within the computer memory. The sensed information can be used for monitoring as well as analysis using a recommendation engine to provide maintenance and repair alerts.

In an embodiment, a method determines one or more sources of carbon monoxide (CO) in a smart-home environment that includes a plurality of smart devices that have at least measurement and communication capabilities. The method includes measuring a level of CO in the smart-home environment to generate a CO measurement, and providing the CO measurement and one or more current characteristics of the smart-home environment, from one or more of the smart devices to an analyzing device. The method further includes evaluating, by the analyzing device and with the CO measurement and the current characteristics of the smart-home environment, a set of CO correlation scenarios that attribute generation of CO to a corresponding one of a set of specific sources, and selecting one or more of the specific sources as the most likely source of the CO, by aggregating results of the correlation scenarios.

In some embodiments, an oxygen concentrator may include lightweight injection molded housing components coupled to dual-pump diaphragm compressors. The oxygen concentrator may be coupled to a pressure transducer that detects a user's inhalation. The detected inhalation may signal the release of a bolus of oxygen. The sensitivity of the pressure transducer readings may be adjusted based on a detected environment. The user's breathing rate may also be determined to control the number of compressors used for increased efficiency. An ultrasonic sensor and gas flow rate meter may be used to determine an amount of oxygen being delivered to the user. Other components such as step valves and a solar panel may also be used to further conserve battery power. The oxygen concentrator may also incorporate an audio device such as a mobile phone.

Airborne particles are impacted on a collection surface, analyzed, and then the collection surface is regenerated. Thus, the same collection surface can be used in numerous cycles. The analysis can be focused on one or more properties of interest, such as the concentration of airborne biologicals. A method and apparatus provides high-accuracy measurements of an electrical parameter across a broad range of parameter input values. In one embodiment, an intelligent electronic device (IED), e.g., a digital electrical power and energy meter, with a plurality of independently-adjustable gain factors measures a parameter, and calculates and stores calibration factors associated with known values of the measured parameter. A mode of operation may define the number and selection of chambers to be inflated, the pressurization levels, the pressurization time, or the sequence of chamber inflation. To enable the controller to automatically perform a designated mode of operation based on the type of compression sleeve connected, a new and improved connecting device is provided. An indicator on an interface connector associates a predetermined mode of operation with the interface connector. A sensor associated with a complementary connector identifies the mode of operation associated with the interface connector. It is contemplated that the universal connecting device can be used for any type of system, not just controllers for a gradient sequential compression system.
