Description

[Technical field]

[0001] [CROSS REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATIONS] This application claims the benefit of priority based on Korean Patent Application No. 10-2022-0169450 filed December 7, 2022 and Korean Patent Application No. 10-2023-0168582 filed November 28, 2023, and all contents disclosed in the documents of said Korean patent applications are incorporated herein by reference.

[0002] The present invention relates to a battery module and a battery pack including the same, and more particularly to a battery module having an improved thermal radio wave blocking function during thermal runaway and a battery pack including the same. [Background technology]

[0003] 2. Description of the Related Art With technological development and increasing demand for mobile devices, the demand for secondary batteries as an energy source is rapidly increasing. Therefore, research into secondary batteries that can meet various demands is being actively conducted.

[0004] Secondary batteries have been attracting attention not only for use in mobile devices such as mobile phones, digital cameras, and notebook computers, but also as energy sources for power devices such as electric bicycles, electric cars, and hybrid electric cars.

[0005] In recent years, the need for large-capacity secondary battery structures has increased, including the use of secondary batteries as energy storage sources, and there is a growing demand for medium- to large-sized modular battery packs that assemble battery modules in which a large number of secondary batteries are connected in series / parallel.

[0006] Meanwhile, when a battery pack is constructed by connecting a plurality of battery cells in series / parallel, a common method is to construct a battery module consisting of at least one battery cell, and then to construct a battery pack by adding other components using the at least one battery module. The battery cells constituting such a medium- to large-sized battery module are composed of secondary batteries that can be charged and discharged, and such high-output, large-capacity secondary batteries generate a large amount of heat during the charging and discharging process.

[0007] If the internal temperature of a battery cell rises under certain conditions, the battery cell may become overheated due to an abnormal reaction, or thermal runaway may occur from an overcharged battery cell.

[0008] During thermal runaway, the battery cell in question emits high-temperature heat and exhaust gases containing exhaust by-products. In the battery module, it is important to prevent this high-temperature heat and exhaust gases from transferring to other battery cells and causing damage, i.e., to prevent heat transfer.

[0009] For this reason, attempts have been made to construct a battery module by compartmentalizing the battery module and arranging battery cells in the compartmented areas, but such compartmentalization entails problems in that it is very costly and requires a lot of space. Summary of the Invention [Problem to be solved by the invention]

[0010] The problem that the present invention seeks to solve is to prevent (or minimize) heat transfer due to thermal runaway.

[0011] However, the problems to be solved by the embodiments of the present invention are not limited to the above problems, and can be variously expanded within the scope of the technical ideas included in the present invention. [Means for solving the problem]

[0019] The pair of first surfaces may consist of wide surfaces of the module frame, the pair of second surfaces may consist of narrow surfaces of the module frame, and the vent portion may include a through hole penetrating either one of the pair of first surfaces.

[0020] The through holes may be arranged in a plurality along a length direction of the at least one surface.

[0021] The through holes may be arranged in a plurality of rows, and the barrier may be disposed between adjacent rows of through holes.

[0025] The end plates may include additional vents for battery cells disposed in the compartments.

[0026] The additional vent portion may include an additional through hole that passes through the end plate.

[0035] DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS The present invention will now be described in detail with reference to the accompanying drawings, so that those skilled in the art can easily carry out the present invention. The present invention may be embodied in several different forms, and is not limited to the embodiments described herein.

[0036] In order to clearly describe the present invention, parts that are not relevant to the description will be omitted, and the same reference numerals will be used to refer to the same or similar components throughout the specification.

[0037] In addition, the size and thickness of each component shown in the drawings are arbitrarily shown for convenience of explanation, and the present invention is not necessarily limited to those shown in the drawings. In the drawings, thicknesses are enlarged to clearly show multiple layers and regions. In the drawings, thicknesses of some layers and regions are exaggerated for convenience of explanation.

[0038] Furthermore, when a part such as a layer, film, region, or plate is said to be "on" or "above" another part, this includes not only when it is "directly above" the other part, but also when there is another part in between. Conversely, when a part is said to be "directly above" another part, it means that there is no other part in the middle. Furthermore, being "on" or "above" a reference part means being located above or below the reference part, and does not necessarily mean being located "above" or "above" the opposite direction to gravity.

[0039] Additionally, throughout the specification, when a part "comprises" a certain element, unless otherwise specified to the contrary, it means that the part may further include other elements, rather than excluding other elements.

[0040] Additionally, throughout the specification, "on a plane" means when the subject part is viewed from above, and "on a cross section" means when the subject part is cut vertically and viewed from the side.

[0041] FIG. 1 is a perspective view of a battery module according to a first embodiment of the present invention, FIG. 2 is a cutaway perspective view taken along line II-II in FIG. 1, and FIG. 3 is a cross-sectional view taken along line III-III in FIG.

[0042] 1 to 3, a battery module 100 according to an embodiment of the present invention includes a plurality of battery cells 110 and a housing 120 in which the plurality of battery cells 110 are housed.

[0043] In this embodiment, the battery cell 110 is a pouch-type secondary battery. That is, the battery cell 110 includes an electrode assembly including a positive electrode plate, a negative electrode plate, and a separator, and a rectangular cell case in which the electrode assembly is housed. Electrode leads that are electrically connected to the positive electrode plate and the negative electrode plate are protruded from the outside of the cell case.

[0044] The battery cells 110 are divided into a plurality of battery cell groups (1101, 1102, 1103, 1104) and arranged in the internal space of the housing 120. In this embodiment, the battery cells 110 are provided in four battery cell groups 1101, 1102, 1103, 1104, and one battery cell group is composed of four battery cells, but the present invention is not necessarily limited thereto.

[0045] A housing 120 in which such a plurality of battery cell groups (1101, 1102, 1103, 1104) are housed can be configured to include a module frame 122, a first end plate 124, and a second end plate 126.

[0046] The module frame 122 may be configured as a rectangular tubular frame having a pair of first surfaces 122a and a pair of second surfaces 122b. In this embodiment, the pair of first surfaces 122a are wider than the pair of second surfaces 122b, and the pair of second surfaces 122b are narrower than the pair of first surfaces 122a. Alternatively, the pair of first surfaces may be narrower, and the pair of second surfaces may be wider.

[0047] Thus, the module frame 122 has an accommodation space capable of accommodating the battery cell groups (1101, 1102, 1103, 1104), and may have a structure in which openings are arranged opposite to each other along the length direction (x). Such a module frame 122 may be formed by extrusion molding, or may be constructed by connecting plate materials constituting the wide surface 122a and the narrow surface 122b to each other by a connecting means such as welding, screws, or rivets. Alternatively, the module frame 122 may be constructed by forming the pair of narrow surfaces 122b and one of the pair of wide surfaces 122a (the wide surface disposed at the bottom of the battery module in the drawing) into one integral structure, and connecting the other of the pair of wide surfaces 122a (the wide surface disposed at the top of the battery module in the drawing) to the integral structure in a cover manner, and in this embodiment, the module frame 122 is constructed in this manner.

[0048] The first end plate (or front end plate) 124 and the second end plate (or rear end plate) 126 are fixed to both ends of the module frame 122 by welding or the like while covering the openings of the module frame 122, and cover both ends, for example the front and rear ends, of the battery cell groups 1101, 1102, 1103, and 1104.

[0049] The first end plate 124 and the second end plate 126 are located on the open first side (y-axis direction) and second side (-y direction) of the module frame 122, and cover the stack of battery cell groups 1101, 1102, 1103, and 1104. Such first end plate 124 and second end plate 126 can physically protect the stack of battery cell groups 1101, 1102, 1103, and 1104 and other electrical components from external impacts.

[0050] A busbar assembly 200 for electrically connecting the battery cells 110 to each other is arranged between the first end plate 124 and both ends of the stack of battery cell groups (1101, 1102, 1103, 1104) and between the second end plate 126 and both ends of the stack of battery cell groups (1101, 1102, 1103, 1104).

[0051] The busbar assembly 200 includes a busbar 210 and a busbar frame 212. The busbar 210 is attached to the busbar frame 212 and can be electrically connected to the electrode leads of each battery cell 110. The busbar frame 212 can fix the position of the busbar 210 and physically protect the stack of battery cell groups (1101, 1102, 1103, 1104) and the busbar 210 from external impact. In this embodiment, the busbar frame 212 is configured as a single integrated structure.

[0052] Meanwhile, a barrier 300 is disposed between adjacent battery cell groups (1101, 1102, 1103, 1104). The barrier 300 prevents high-temperature exhaust gas, exhaust by-products (e.g., metal particles), flames, etc., emitted from at least one battery cell of the battery cell groups (1101, 1102, 1103, 1104) due to thermal runaway from the battery cell in question from transferring to other battery cells.

[0053] More specifically, the barrier 300 is disposed between adjacent battery cell groups (1101, 1102, 1103, 1104) (for example, in this embodiment, it is disposed between all four battery cell groups) to prevent a battery cell included in one battery cell group from experiencing thermal runaway, and to prevent the high-temperature exhaust gas and the resulting thermal energy from being transmitted to other battery cell groups.

[0054] Thus, the barrier 300 together with the housing 120 define compartments 310, 312, 314, 316 for the battery cell groups (1101, 1102, 1103, 1104).

[0055] As described above, the barrier 300 is disposed between the battery cell groups (1101, 1102, 1103, 1104). Here, the barrier 300 is supported in contact with the inner surfaces of both wide surfaces 122a of the module frame 122 as shown in Fig. 3. For example, the barrier 300 is disposed inside the module frame 122 such that the upper and lower ends are in contact with the inner surfaces of both wide surfaces 122a of the module frame 122 based on the drawing.

[0056] As a result, inside the housing 120, a number of (four in this embodiment) compartments 310, 312, 314, 316 are provided that are formed (or created) by connecting the barrier 300 and a portion of the housing 120 together.

[0057] Corresponding battery cell groups (1101, 1102, 1103, 1104) are disposed in the compartments 310, 312, 314, 316, respectively. At this time, the outermost battery cells of each battery cell group (1101, 1102, 1103, 1104) may be in close contact with the barrier 300. Furthermore, in the outermost battery cell group (1101, 1104) among the battery cell groups (1101, 1102, 1103, 1104), a pad 350 for shock absorption or the like may be disposed between the battery cell adjacent to the narrow surface 122b of the module frame 122 and the narrow surface 122b. This pad 350 may be omitted if necessary.

[0058] The barrier 300 can be maintained in a fixed state by the adhesion caused by the arrangement of the battery cell groups (1101, 1102, 1103, 1104) in the housing 120, and if necessary, the contact portion with the wide surface 122a can be fixed through adhesive, welding, etc., to further strengthen the fixed state.

[0059] The barrier 300 may be constructed with heat and / or fire resistant materials. For example, the barrier 300 may be constructed with fiberglass sheets, silicone sheets, mica, or FLAME BARRIER FRB, etc. Alternatively, the barrier 300 may be constructed with foam pads. The barrier 300 may also be constructed with reinforcement materials.

[0060] 4 is a perspective view showing a schematic diagram of a barrier 300 according to an embodiment. The illustrated barrier 300 may include a reinforcing member 300a and a heat-resistant member 300b. The reinforcing member 300a may be, for example, a metal sheet. The reinforcing member 300a and the heat-resistant member 300b are provided in a rectangular shape according to the shape of the battery cell 110, and the heat-resistant member 300b is laminated on both sides of the reinforcing member 300a. When the barrier 300 having such a structure is disposed between the battery cell groups (1101, 1102, 1103, 1104), it may be disposed long along the longitudinal direction (x) of the module frame 122.

[0061] Meanwhile, a vent portion 400 is provided on at least one of the wide surfaces 122a of the module frame 122. The vent portion 400 is for the safety of the battery cells arranged in each of the compartments 310, 312, 314, and 316, and is configured to exhaust high-temperature exhaust gas and heat emitted from the battery cells, as well as flames generated by these, to the outside of the housing 120.

[0062] In this embodiment, the vent portion 400 is composed of through holes 400a arranged at equal intervals along the length direction (x) of the module frame 122 on the wide surface 122a (the wide surface arranged at the top in the drawing) of the module frame 122. The through holes 400a may have a suitable shape and a suitable size so that the module frame 122 has an appropriate strength.

[0063] The vent portions 400 do not overlap the barriers 300. For example, as can be further seen in Figures 1 and 3, the vent portions 400 are arranged in a row on the broad surface 122a of the module frame 122 corresponding to each compartment 310, 312, 314, 316, and the barriers 300 are disposed between adjacent vent portions 400.

[0064] In this embodiment, the vent unit 400 is a slot extending in the length direction (x) of the module frame 122, and is composed of through holes 400a arranged in a row at the center of the wide surface 122a of the module frame 122 corresponding to each of the compartments 310, 312, 314, and 316, but the vent unit 400 of the present invention is not necessarily limited to this. For example, the vent unit may be configured in a valve type.

[0065] When the battery module 100 configured as described above is applied to a device such as an electric vehicle and is in operation, if a battery cell of one battery cell group 1101 (e.g., the first battery cell group from the left in FIG. 3) experiences an abnormal state, high-temperature gas is discharged from the battery cell group 1101 and high-temperature heat is generated in the corresponding compartment 310. However, this high-temperature discharged gas and heat cannot move to the corresponding compartment 312 in which the adjacent battery cell group, e.g., the second battery cell group 1102 from the left in FIG. 3, is arranged because they are blocked by the barrier 300. Meanwhile, the discharged gas and heat rise to the upper part of the housing 120 in which the vent portion 400 is arranged, and can be discharged to the outside of the housing 120 through the through-hole 400a. Furthermore, even if a fire occurs in the compartment 310, the fire can be discharged to the outside of the housing 120 through the through-hole 400a. In this manner, even if thermal runaway occurs in a battery cell, the battery module 100 according to the embodiment can prevent or delay the transfer of heat from the battery cell in which thermal runaway has occurred to the adjacent battery cells by the compartments and vents created by the barrier 300 and the housing 120.

[0066] 5 is a perspective view showing a battery module 500 according to a second embodiment of the present invention taken along line II-II in FIG. 1. The battery module 500 of the second embodiment is substantially the same as the battery module 100 of the first embodiment, and therefore only the different configurations will be described below.

[0067] In the battery module 500 of the second embodiment, when the barrier 330 is disposed between the battery cell groups (1101, 1102, 1103, 1104), both ends of the barrier 330 are in contact with and supported by the bus bar frame 212 of the bus bar assembly 200. That is, the upper and lower ends of the barrier 330 contact the inner surface of the wide surface 122a of the module frame 122, and both ends contact the inner surface of the bus bar frame 212, based on the drawing.

[0068] Such a barrier 330 can ensure that when compartments 310, 312, 314, 316 are created in the housing 120, each battery cell group (1101, 1102, 1103, 1104) is completely isolated in the compartments 310, 312, 314, 316 even on the busbar assembly 200 side.

[0069] In the case of thermal runaway of a battery cell, by-products (metal particles, etc.) discharged together with high-temperature exhaust gas may flow toward the bus bar assembly 200 and cause a spark. Meanwhile, the battery module 500 of the present embodiment can reduce the spark generation phenomenon by previously discharging exhaust gas, etc. to the outside of the housing 120 through the vent portion 400, and even if a spark occurs, the barrier 330 is disposed around the bus bar assembly 200, so that the generated spark is blocked by the barrier 330 and can be prevented from propagating throughout the battery module 500.

[0070] FIG. 6 is a perspective view showing a battery module according to a third embodiment of the present invention, and FIG. 7 is a perspective view of a portion cut away along line VII-VII in FIG.

[0071] The battery module 600 according to the third embodiment is formed substantially the same as the battery module 100 according to the first embodiment, so only the different configurations will be described below.

[0072] In the battery module 600 of the third embodiment, when the barrier 370 is disposed between the battery cell groups 1101, 1102, 1103, 1104, at least one edge of both ends of the barrier 370 is in contact with and supported by the inner surface of the end plate. Furthermore, at least one of the end plates is provided with an additional vent portion.

[0073] 6 shows that the periphery of the right end of the barrier 370 is supported in contact with the inner surface of the second end plate 126. In this case, unlike the above-described embodiment, the bus bar frames 212 of the bus bar assembly 200 may be formed as separate types separated from each other corresponding to the battery cell groups (1101, 1102, 1103, 1104), instead of being formed as an integral type. Thus, when the barrier 370 is disposed in the module frame 122, the end region of the barrier 370 may be positioned between the separated bus bar frames 212, and the end edge of the barrier 370 may be closely attached to the inner surface of the second end plate 126. Specifically, the bus bar frame 212 is formed with a slit (SL) into which the barrier 370 can be inserted. The barrier 370 may pass through the slit (SL) formed in the bus bar frame 212 and closely attach to the inner surface of the second end plate 126.

[0074] The additional vents 450 may be comprised of additional through holes 450a, 450b, 450c, 450d formed through the front surface of the second end plate 126. The additional through holes 450a, 450b, 450c, 450d may be provided in any pattern in the front surface of the second end plate 126 corresponding to the respective battery cell groups 1101, 1102, 1103, 1104 or the respective compartments 310, 312, 314, 316.

[0075] The battery module 600 of the third embodiment configured in this manner can be configured such that, when the compartments 310, 312, 314, and 316 are formed within the housing, each battery cell group (1101, 1102, 1103, and 1104) is completely isolated within the compartments 310, 312, 314, and 316 up to the end plate 126 side.

[0076] Therefore, high-temperature exhaust gas and heat generated due to thermal runaway of the battery cells in any of the compartments 310, 312, 314, and 316 can be preferentially discharged to the outside of the housing 120 through the through holes 400a, 400b, 400c, and 400d of the vent portion 400 described above, and in addition (or as a supplement), exhaust gas and heat can also be rapidly discharged to the outside of the housing 120 on the end plate side through the additional through holes 450a, 450b, 450c, and 450d of the additional vent portion 450.

[0077] In this manner, the battery module according to the embodiment of the present invention can prevent or delay heat transfer from a battery cell in question to an adjacent cell by using a compartment structure provided inside the housing.

[0078] A plurality of such battery modules can be arranged to form a battery pack, and the battery pack can have improved design freedom due to the strengthened structure for preventing heat transfer caused by thermal runaway provided in the battery module itself.

[0079] In addition, the battery module and the battery pack including the battery module according to the embodiment may be applied to various devices. Such devices may be applied to transportation means such as electric bicycles, electric cars, and hybrid cars, and ESS (Energy Storage Systems), but the present invention is not limited thereto, and the battery module and the battery pack including the battery module may be applied to various devices that can use the battery module, and these are also within the scope of the present invention.

[0080] Although the preferred embodiments of the present invention have been described in detail above, the scope of the present invention is not limited thereto, and various modifications and improvements made by those skilled in the art using the basic concept of the present invention defined in the following claims also fall within the scope of the present invention.
