Description

[Technical field]

[0001] The present disclosure relates to a smart transceiver system that can be synchronized anywhere in space and allows for networking of several radiating probes (or antennas) for the emission and / or reception of electromagnetic radiation, particularly as part of beamforming or characterization of a radiating device.

[0002] The present disclosure also relates to characterization of devices under test, where the transceiver can be standalone for wired device characterization or connected to a radiating probe and networked by optical links to generate realistic wireless communication scenarios with a communications device under test. [Background technology]

[0003] A multi-sensor emitting / receiving system for characterizing emitting devices usually comprises several emitting electromagnetic probes (or antennas) arranged in an arch shape. This configuration has the advantage that it allows replacing the mechanical displacement axis with an electronic scanning axis. Such a system is described in WO 2012 / 45877 or WO 2012 / 45879.

[0004] Such systems are advantageous compared to conventional measurement means of the CAMB (Compact Antenna Measurement Base) type or of the single sensor type: these systems constitute very powerful and rapid measurement means.

[0005] However, in conventional single or multiple sensor systems, the probes are passive and permanently wired for a fixed operational configuration upon installation, and furthermore, it is difficult to place them anywhere in space given the inherent difficulties in wiring. Summary of the Invention

[0006] The present disclosure solves the problem of reconfiguring a emitting / receiving system for measuring or forming beams to obtain great flexibility of use.

[0007] To this end, the present disclosure relates to a radiating / receiving system comprising at least two modules intended to be connected to an antenna probe or a device under test, each module comprising a radiating / receiving sub-module connected to a processing and communication sub-module, the radiating / receiving sub-module comprising two radio frequency outputs from which two radio frequency cables extend to connect the modules to a radiating element or directly to the device under test, the processing and communication sub-module being configured to generate, from at least one communication protocol, a communication signal intended to be communicated to the radiating / receiving sub-module for transmission on the radio frequency cable, the radiating / receiving sub-module and the processing / communication sub-module being housed in a casing shielded against electromagnetic radiation, the modules further being connected in series using an optical link.

[0008] The present disclosure is advantageously supplemented by the following features, taken alone or in any of their technically possible combinations: - Each module is associated with a dual polarized antenna connected to an emitting / receiving sub-module via a radio frequency cable. - The radio frequency cable has the shortest possible length that allows the connection of the element with the radio frequency connection while limiting the associated losses. The emitting / receiving system includes a control unit configured to communicate a communication protocol to the module, the control unit being connected to the module via a dedicated link adapted for the signal, the link being an Ethernet link or an optical link. - the modules are connected in series using optical links, the system including a control unit connected to a first one of the modules in the series via a dedicated link and configured to control and synchronize the modules, the control unit being capable of controlling a chain of one or more modules. The control unit is configured to control the modules and synchronize the modules to generate an electromagnetic environment. The module is arranged on a support in the form of an arch, a disk or a sphere, the support being intended to be placed around the device under test The control unit is adapted to configure each module according to a defined measurement environment.

[0009] The present invention therefore proposes a reconfigurable system that allows a complete reconfiguration of the emission / reception system on demand.

[0010] The present invention makes it possible to generate a dedicated scenario anywhere in space.

[0011] In the case of multiple networked systems, different systems are distributed in space by being synchronized with each other at dedicated locations, so it is possible to precisely control their behavior in time and space.

[0012] Each system is advantageously small and therefore compact, allowing it to be placed anywhere in space, and the dimensions provide a technological centralization that allows the distribution of a large number of systems.

[0013] For low frequency applications, the present disclosure allows the creation of measurement systems that are compact and easy to control and calibrate, for example, plane waves can be generated with short wall distances for the emitting / receiving system.

[0014] The synchronization of the different systems makes it possible to have a coordinated operation, which allows for higher speeds, so that certain operations can be performed remotely or distributed across all the different systems.

[0015] Each system can communicate directly with a computer via a USB / Ethernet link.

[0016] In addition to the ability to perform measurements on OTA (Over The Air) communications, i.e. any type of wireless communication, the present disclosure may also be used as a vector network analyzer, spectrum analyzer, vector signal analyzer type of instrument.

[0017] The modular aspect of the system's architecture allows blocks to be cascaded to add functionality such as frequency conversion to higher or lower frequencies, RCS (radar cross section) or S-parameter (scattering parameter) measurements.

[0018] The system according to the present disclosure is intended, for example, to be equipped with a multi-sensor radio frequency measurement system, in particular based on spherical near-field measurements.

[0019] The system according to the present disclosure can be used to generate radiation diagrams that can be freely reconfigured by networking them in reception and emission, in particular for plane wave synthesis or beamforming.

[0020] The target frequency range in the radio frequency spectrum ranges from a few megahertz to hundreds of gigahertz.

[0021] In particular, the present disclosure makes it possible to test and thus characterize communication devices having 5G frequencies, and to test one or more antennas that are powered by means of a cable or provided directly with their source or their integrated receiver and can operate in radiation and / or reception.

[0022] The present disclosure makes it possible to know the response of a mobile phone's antenna and integrated transceiver to external electromagnetic radiation.

[0023] The present disclosure makes it possible to know the response of a Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) antenna and its on-board receiver to external electromagnetic interference.

[0024] The present disclosure makes it possible to measure the radiation pattern of a radar antenna in multiple directions in space.

[0025] The present disclosure makes it possible to measure the sensitivity of a mobile phone in multiple directions in space and to generate wave propagation scenarios corresponding to buildings, vehicles, and / or environments such as urban or rural areas.

[0026] It allows testing devices that operate at high frequencies, since all systems can be synchronized. In fact, 5G technology requires passing a bandwidth of several hundred MHz (for example, 200 MHz) in each 5G MIMO channel. This means that 200 million pieces of information can be analyzed per second. To do this, all systems must be synchronized with each other. Such a performance is not possible with current systems, which rarely reach a bandwidth of 200 MHz, and these are systems of large dimensions.

[0027] In general, any communication system can be characterized and placed in communication situations in realistic scenarios using the disclosure with integrated instrumentation. Thus, a range of tests can be performed at will thanks to the reconfigurable nature of the disclosed system. [Brief description of the drawings]

[0030] 1 illustrates an emission / reception system 1 intended to communicate with a device 2, for example a device under test (DUT), according to a first embodiment. According to this first embodiment, the system 1 comprises an emission / reception module 4 directly connected to the device 2.

[0031] 2 illustrates a emitting / receiving system 1 intended to communicate with a device 2' according to a second embodiment. According to this second embodiment, the system 1' comprises a module 4 connected by a wireless link via an antenna 41 or a probe to the device 2', which may be the device 2' under test.

[0032] As illustrated in FIG. 3 , the module 4 includes an emission / reception sub-module 411 connected to a processing and communication sub-module 412, which includes two radio frequency outputs RF1, RF2 from which two radio frequency cables 43 extend to connect the module 4 directly to the device 2 or to an antenna 41.

[0033] The emission / reception sub-module 411 and the processing / communication sub-module 412 are advantageously housed in a casing 42, which is preferably shielded against electromagnetic radiation, the casing 42 being as small as possible in order to adequately house the various elements.

[0034] The processing and communication sub-module 412 is configured to generate, from at least one communication protocol, a communication signal intended to be communicated to the emission / reception sub-module 411 for transmission on the radio frequency cable 43. The communication protocol is typically one of the 5G, 4G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth® communication protocols, or more generally, a specification of some rules for a particular type of communication.

[0035] The radio frequency cables 43 are as short as possible in length. They generally do not exceed, for example, 10 cm. However, the length of the radio frequency cables 43 can be adapted according to frequency or integration constraints. The advantage is that the module 4 can be placed as close as possible to the device 2 to which it has to be connected, or, if connected to an antenna 41, to limit losses due to its wiring.

[0036] The processing and communication submodule 412 includes a stage 413 for processing the signals and a stage 414 for managing the communication. The processing stage 413 includes, for example, a processor and one or more FPGAs (Field Programmable Gate Arrays) which make it possible to process and calibrate the signals, but also to configure the shape of the electromagnetic waves (attenuation, phase shift, fading, Doppler effect or time delay effect). This makes it possible, for example, to generate chirps for radar applications. It is also possible to generate complex modulated signals (for example 2G, 3G, 4G, 5G, Wi-Fi, radar signals, etc.).

[0037] Among the possible signal processing operations performed by module 412 are gain adjustment, phase adjustment, filtering, time shifting, addition of random noise, simulation of the Doppler effect, etc.

[0038] The communication stage 413 is configured for managing the communication and is connected to different interfaces depending on the desired communication: a USB 415, an optical 416 and an Ethernet 417 interface. The USB interface makes it possible to connect the module 4 to a measurement system 12 or directly to a computer for programming the FPGA and debugging it, the optical interface 416 to an optical link and the Ethernet interface to a control unit 11, for example of computer type. The optical interface 416 notably enables communication between the two modules.

[0039] Furthermore, the sub-module 412 includes an interface 418 for the power supply of the sub-modules 411, 412.

[0040] Sub-module 411 includes an interface 419 that is connected to sub-module 412. According to this example, sub-modules 411, 412 are on separate electronic maps for better integration into the system, although these sub-modules could very well be integrated onto a single map.

[0041] Each module 4 therefore contains a digital transceiver with several channels (for example two channels) and a directly implemented channel emulator function that allows to generate advanced communication protocols. The modules 4 are reversible in the sense that they can either emit a signal (Tx direction) or receive a signal (Rx direction). In reception (Rx), the module 4 measures the signal and can perform processing operations on this signal. In emission (Tx), the module generates the desired signal.

[0042] As a result, each module 4 can be reconfigured as desired, allowing great flexibility in its use.

[0043] Also, the system consumption is relatively low compared to conventional devices equipped with multi-sensor systems with conventional architectures including passive modules. Therefore, there is a power gain in the link budget, which allows to process signals at a lower level and the energy consumption is reduced accordingly.

[0044] The power consumption varies depending on the selected application, which may require more or less computing power. The disclosed system allows flexible consumption depending on the type of use. Given the simple wiring, there are multiple possible applications. Each module is capable of receiving and transmitting CW or complex signals.

[0045] Furthermore, given that the emitting / receiving submodule 411 is as close as possible to the antenna, all radio processing operations, especially the baseband passage, occur at this location, and the wired radio frequency link, which is usually a source of losses, is no longer a constraint here.

[0046] Also, the processing operations carried out at the level of each module are perfected thanks to the locally applied calibration. Moreover, once a module is calibrated, the calibration data can be stored at the level of the processing and communication sub-modules, and not on an external device, as is the case in conventional systems.

[0047] The reduced use of wired radio frequency links allows the system to be used to measure test devices 2 of large dimensions, such as aircraft, satellites or automobiles.

[0048] The communication protocol is provided to the modules (in particular stage 413) via a control unit 10. The control unit 10 may possibly only include a computer 11 which transmits the protocol to the modules by a dedicated Ethernet type link 3a. However, in order to be able to transmit to the modules 4 signals (bandwidth, flow rate) that are not supported by the Ethernet link, the control unit 10 includes, in addition to the computer 11, a casing 12 that allows to generate signals that are not supported by the Ethernet link. The casing 12 is connected to the computer 11 which drives it. Such a casing is a CPRI (Common Public Radio Interface) casing. In this case, the modules 4 are connected to the casing 12 via an optical link 3b. The control unit 10 may also include a spectrum analyzer 14 connected to the computer 11.

[0049] In the latter case, the casing 12 is advantageously connected to a radio measurement system 13 (Radio Communication Tester, RCT) and thus serves as an interface with conventional measurement devices (network emulators, composite signal generators, etc.).

[0050] The computer 11 thus makes it possible to remotely manage the parameterization of the module 4 and, more generally, is a device including a user interface, a processor and an Ethernet link, and also makes it possible to identify anomalies in the module 4. As will be appreciated, all the intelligence of the module is located as close as possible to the device under test 2.

[0051] According to a second embodiment illustrated in Fig. 2, the module 4 is connected to a device under test 2' via an antenna 41, which is a dual polarized passive antenna 41, the device under test 2' being a radiating device, a mobile phone, a tablet, a connected object. As illustrated in Fig. 4, the passive antenna 41 is advantageously an assembly of two radiating elements 41a, 41b in a cross-shaped assembly, each element of the cross corresponding to a polarization of the radiation of the antenna 41. The passive antenna 41 has dimensions that depend on the desired frequency associated with the device under test 2'. The advantage of an orthogonal arrangement of two linearly polarized antennas is that the wave vector in the plane of the antennas is perfectly known and therefore the electric field at this location is particularly known.

[0052] The dimensions depend on the frequency band covered by the antenna, for example 0.4-6 GHz, 6-18 GHz, 18-50 GHz. The higher the frequency band, the smaller the dimensions. The lower the frequency band, the larger the dimensions.

[0053] The passive antenna 41 is connected with the emitting / receiving sub-module 411 via two radio frequency links 43 (one for each polarization of the antenna 41 and therefore for each radiating element 41a, 41b). These radio frequency links must be as short as possible. In particular, the passive antenna 41 is at a distance of the order of a few centimetres from the casing 42. It should be noted here that this distance is very small, which makes it desirable to have the shortest possible wired links in order to overcome as many losses as possible of the wired links inherent at high frequencies. In the case exemplified here, the losses are limited.

[0054] In fact, cable losses (i.e. causing signal attenuation) increase significantly with frequency and become prohibitive above about 20 GHz. Thus, wired links are acceptable above a few centimeters, but not above a few meters. Thus, the use of amplifiers is avoided here to compensate for signal losses, and therefore the overall budget in terms of energy consumption and noise factor is better than in systems where the electronics and intelligence are far away behind radio frequency cables.

[0055] Thus, as illustrated, the module 4 includes an emission / reception sub-module 411 connected to a processing and communication sub-module 412, the emission / reception sub-module 411 having two radio frequency outputs RF1, RF2 from which two radio frequency cables 43 extend to connect the module 4 directly to the radiating element 41 or to the device under test 2.

[0056] When several probes are placed in space, Fig. 5 illustrates a emitting / receiving system 1' according to a third embodiment, including several modules 4, here three identical to those already described. Here, the device under test 2' is placed on a support 5. Such a support 5 is movable around an axis of rotation so that the device under test 2 can be placed in different ways depending on the desired measurement. It is specified that it is possible to use a matrix of modules distributed in a plane. In this case, the emitting / receiving system is for forming beams, which are used to test the device under test. Several modules with emitting antennas can be arranged on the same 2D plane to form a network (rectangular in shape, or generally circular), in which case it is possible to form certain beams pointing in one or more directions in space to radiate or receive signals (Tx / Rx).

[0057] The module 4 is small and can be placed anywhere in space, especially around the device under test.

[0058] The modules 4 are serially connected to each other by high speed links 6, preferably optical links. In particular, each module 4 is serially connected to its neighbouring modules by optical links 6 (daisy chain), which links can be bidirectional, i.e. a module can communicate with its neighbouring modules in both directions.

[0059] The modules 4 are powered by means of a power cable connected to a power source (not shown) that connects each module two by two as well as optical links 6.

[0060] Thus, the measurement system 1' essentially comprises an optical link 6 and a power cable.

[0061] The link between the two modules 4 is configured to carry digital data for this two-to-two communication. Additionally, the wiring of the modules 4 is simple, allowing for significant data rates over the optical link.

[0062] To operate all the modules, the system 1' again includes a control unit 10 configured to control the modules 4 around or near the device under test 2' and to synchronize them with each other. In particular, the control unit 10 communicates with all the other modules 4 via the first one of the series of modules 4, by being connected to this module by dedicated links 3a, 3b (Ethernet or optical links depending on the type of signal). Again, there are hardly any radio frequency links. The control unit 10 follows the one described in connection with FIG. 1.

[0063] Thanks to the links 3a, 3b between the control unit 10 and the first of the modules 4 in the series, the control unit 10 is able to synchronize all the other modules and to specify what each module 4 is doing at every moment.

[0064] This is important since the measurements and the environment desired for testing require real-time control. For this reason, each module can be parameterized and reconfigured remotely via the control unit 10, thus allowing great flexibility of use. In particular, it is possible to transmit identical data (for example in baseband) to all modules 4 and to have specific processing operations for each module 4. These processing operations contribute to generating a specific electromagnetic environment (through adjustments of gain, phase, filtering, time shifting, addition of random noise, simulation of the Doppler effect, etc.). It is also possible to generate different "propagation scenarios", i.e. "modeling of the propagation channel". The aim is to implement real use scenarios in a controlled environment, for example phone use scenarios in an office, in a car, on a train, etc.

[0065] Furthermore, the control unit 10 is able to identify an abnormality in one of the modules through self-diagnosis.

[0066] The processing and communication sub-module 412 supports the Common Public Radio Interface (CPRI) communication protocol that allows the module 4 to communicate with its neighboring modules.

[0067] Given that the modules can be freely reconfigured, each module 4 offers the possibility of on-board processing operations, including in particular the correction of errors linked to imperfections in the antennas of the module (orthomodes). On-board processing operations between pairs of modules 4 (or multiple pairs of probes) for carrying out measurements of transmission parameters are also possible.

[0068] As already mentioned, it can be seen that advantageously the only existing radio frequency links are those that connect the sub-modules 411 to the antennas 41 composed of transducer radiating elements. These links are very short and therefore the associated losses are very low and no longer constitute a barrier to the use at the highest frequencies of the 5G spectrum. Moreover, the presence of low radio frequency links solves the problem of significant link losses at high frequencies (on the order of more than 20 GHz).

[0069] FIG. 6 illustrates a emitting / receiving system 1 ″ according to a fourth embodiment for measuring the electromagnetic radiation of a emitting device 2 ″, where several probes are arranged on an arch.

[0070] The device under test 2 ″ is advantageously arranged on a support 5 .

[0071] The modules 4 are distributed on a support structure 7 which in Fig. 6 is arch-shaped, but other shapes are also possible. For example a distribution according to a matrix or a spherical structure is possible. The shape of the support 7 depends on the desired measurement situation.

[0072] The advantage of disposing them on an arch is that by rotating the axis of the support 5 it is possible to reconstruct a 3D map of the electromagnetic radiation of the device under test 2″. Typically, the distribution of the modules and therefore of the antennas on the arch is regular for the 3D characterization (the device under test can be passive). Only some modules are activated for a specific communication scenario, in which case the device under test is necessarily an active (or autonomous Tx / Rx) communication device. These modules may be arranged on a sphere (for example 15 modules distributed discretely), in this case arranged in space (with freedom of synchronization and arrangement, without constraints related to link losses), as shown in FIG. 5.

[0073] The support 5 is movable, making it possible to create successive vertical sections of the radiation to cover the entire sphere surrounding the device under test 2'', thus obtaining a complete 3D radiation.

[0074] According to this fourth embodiment, the radiating device under test 2'' is an antenna whose radiation and reception characteristics are to be characterized.

[0075] The device under test 2″ is connected to the control unit via a radio frequency wired link 8, while the modules 4 in series are connected to the controller 10 via an optical or Ethernet link, depending on the signal used to characterize the antenna. Advantageously, this is an optical link, in particular for testing 5G antennas. In either case, the modules 4 are connected to each other via an optical link 6, as already discussed (see also FIG. 5 and the associated description).

[0076] FIG. 7 illustrates an emission / reception system 1''' according to a fifth embodiment for measuring the electromagnetic radiation of an emitting device 2'.

[0077] Again, such a device under test 2' is placed on a support 5 and is here a communication device such as a mobile phone. In this case, the system includes a relay antenna A for simulating communication with a base station in the downlink direction, while the module 4 is used to capture the waves emitted by the device under test 2' in the uplink direction. The roles are reversed in the direction of communication. This relay antenna A is also capable of full-duplex communication with the module 4, so that its use is one possibility when it comes to testing a communication object. The relay antenna A is connected to the controller 10 via a wired radio frequency link 8.

[0078] When using a support as illustrated in Figures 6 and 7, the casing 42 is housed within the support structure 7 around the device under test 2'. This differs from known multi-sensor solutions in which each antenna is connected to a bay by a radio frequency link which is necessarily larger than the solution described here, and in which the bays cannot be located as close as possible to the module 4.

[0079] The present disclosure may also be advantageously used for MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) OTA (Over The Air) simulations that typically use centralized channel emulators, where, thanks to the disclosure, such simulations are easier thanks to the architecture of the disclosed system, i.e., a more flexible, easier to wire, distributed computing power, and scalable architecture.

[0080] In Fig. 8a, the device under test 2' (mobile phone) is positioned in an anechoic chamber CA around an antenna A connected to a bay 20 and a control unit 10. The antenna A and the bay 20 make it possible to simulate a MIMO environment. In this figure, the complex wiring of each antenna A is illustrated. In contrast, in Fig. 8b, the device under test 2' is positioned in the center of a module 4 of the system, with simplified wiring according to the present disclosure, in particular with an optical link 6 to the control unit 10. In these two examples, the advantages of the module according to the present disclosure can be seen.

[0081] As part of the plane wave generation from the system according to the present disclosure, it is possible to move all baseband I&Q data processing to each probe.

[0082] In accordance with 5G requirements, the disclosed system is capable of testing RF devices that radiate or communicate over a wide range of frequencies (up to tens of gigahertz) with a wide bandwidth of hundreds of MHz, and simulating a multitude of test conditions such as multipath, Doppler effect, noise, etc.
