Abstract
Disclosed herein are novel blood-brain barrier (BBB) permeable receptors at the BBB interface, target-directed peptides capable of binding to these novel receptors and their derivatives, and related methods of using these receptors to increase BBB permeability and to deliver drugs to the nervous system (e.g., the CNS). In certain embodiments, the present invention provides methods for increasing blood-brain barrier permeability. In some embodiments, the method involves providing a CA4-binding peptide (also called a “target-directed peptide”) capable of binding to primate and / or human carbonic anhydrase 4 (CA4 or CA-IV), thereby increasing blood-brain barrier permeability.
