System and method for controlling lighting sources

Abstract

A system and method for controlling illumination sources are provided. One method includes receiving a request to change the illumination output for one or more light sources, identifying the total aphakia irradiance, identifying the normalized standard deviation of the total aphakia irradiance, and identifying the peak total aphakia irradiance based on the total aphakia irradiance and the normalized standard deviation of the total aphakia irradiance. The request includes a requested light level. If the peak total aphakia irradiance is less than or equal to the aphakia irradiance limit, the illumination output is changed based on the requested light level. If the peak total aphakia irradiance is greater than the aphakia irradiance limit, the requested light level is reduced until the peak total aphakia irradiance is less than or equal to the aphakia irradiance limit, and the illumination output is changed based on the reduced requested light level.
