Description

Technical Field

[0001] The present invention relates to a swiveling furniture dowel for joining furniture parts, for example for joining wooden material plates at a right angle, the furniture dowel having at least one dowel pin. The present invention further relates to an assembly comprising at least one swiveling furniture dowel and preferably a first furniture part in the form of a drawer side, the furniture dowel having at least one dowel pin. Finally, the present invention relates to a method for joining a first furniture part, preferably in the form of a drawer side, to a second furniture part, preferably in the form of a drawer bottom plate, by means of at least one swiveling furniture dowel.

[0002] A number of furniture joining devices are known and widely known. A simple plug-in joining member with a wooden dowel received by a hole is widespread. In a first step, the dowel is mainly glued into the end face hole of the plate. The substantial advantage in this case is that the dowel does not protrude beyond the plate surface, and thus the length of the component is only slightly increased in terms of packaging technology. Therefore, when disassembling and delivering the furniture parts, the dowel can already be attached. The attachment of loose joining members is omitted.

[0003] In the field of self-assembly furniture, threaded pins with ball heads gripped by cam lock nuts are extremely widely used. When the plates are joined at an angle, preferably the pin is screwed into the surface of the first plate. The second plate has an end face hole for this pin and a side face hole for the corresponding cam lock nut. In the pre-assembled state, the pin protrudes beyond the plate surface. This is extremely inconvenient in terms of packaging technology. Therefore, usually, the pins are attached and packaged without being installed. Therefore, such preliminary work has to be carried out by the furniture assembler. If the furniture is to be assembled by the end user, it is quite laborious to convey the correct assembly and positioning of all the pins to the end user.

[0004] Another drawback of furniture dowels known from the prior art is that, especially when used in conjunction with flat furniture parts, the furniture part may be damaged in a direction where the material covering is minimal, and as a result, the furniture dowel may lose its hold.

[0005] The object of the present invention is to provide an improved swivelable furniture dowel that at least partially eliminates the drawbacks known in the prior art and, according to a first aspect of the present invention, is particularly excellent in minimizing the risk of damage to the furniture part in directions where the material covering is minimal. Furthermore, according to a second aspect of the present invention, it is desirable to provide an improved assembly comprising at least one swivelable furniture dowel and a first furniture part, which is excellent in that it requires minimal assembly effort and allows for the smallest possible packaging size. Finally, it is desirable to provide a method for joining a first furniture part to a second furniture part by at least one swivelable furniture dowel, which is an improvement over the prior art.

[0006] This problem is solved by the features described in claims 1, 10, and 16.

[0007] Accordingly, according to a first aspect of the present invention, a swivelable furniture dowel for joining furniture parts, for example, for joining wood material plates at right angles, the furniture dowel having at least one dowel pin, wherein the dowel pin is formed to generate various circumferential pressing forces in a receiving hole provided in one of the furniture parts at a predetermined rotation angle of the furniture dowel relative to the furniture parts to be joined.

[0008] In this way, for example, in a flat piece of furniture, the dowel pin can be formed such that it generates a high outer peripheral pressure in the direction along the plane of the furniture board, and a reduced outer peripheral pressure in the direction perpendicular to the plane of the furniture board, i.e., in the direction where the material covering is minimal, thereby reducing the risk of damage.

[0009] In an advantageous embodiment of a furniture dowel, the dimension of the dowel pin in a first direction may be specified to be greater than the dimension in a second direction.

[0010] In this regard, it was found that it is advantageous for the dowel pin to have a longitudinal axis, with the first and second directions being orthogonal to each other and extending perpendicular to the longitudinal axis.

[0011] Alternatively or supplementally, the dowel pin may be specified to be substantially elliptical or oblong in cross-section.

[0012] The dowel pin may also be specified to have at least one pressure-reducing groove, preferably extending in the longitudinal direction of the dowel pin.

[0013] These means, either individually or in combination, can generate, in a technically simple manner, various circumferential pressing forces in a receiving hole provided in one of the furniture parts.

[0014] A wide variety of furniture boards are available on the market. These boards also exhibit a wide range of differences in technical parameters such as hardness or density. From an economic standpoint, the goal is to join as many different types of boards as possible as firmly as possible using a single dowel configuration. This is achieved, at least partially, by providing pressure-reducing grooves in the dowels that define an upper limit on the pressing force.

[0015] It is proposed that the dowel pin preferably has a tapered and / or substantially circular dowel pin extension when viewed in cross-section. Such a configuration facilitates the introduction of the dowel pin into the hole.

[0016] It has been found to be advantageous for the furniture dowel to have at least one swivel pin for swivel support within and / or on the first furniture part. This allows the furniture dowel to be swivelly supported within and / or on the furniture part in a simpler and more secure manner.

[0017] Alternatively or supplementally, the furniture dowel may be specified to have at least one mounting device for clamping and mounting the furniture dowel within and / or on the first furniture part. In this context, it has been found advantageous that the mounting device has a tension anchor and at least one clamping surface that is expandable outward through the tension anchor, in which case the clamping surface is minimally expanded outward by a predetermined angle of rotation greater than 90° and less than 180° between the tension anchor and the dowel pin, preferably a predetermined angle of rotation of about 100°, and preferably the clamping surface is maximally expanded outward by a predetermined angle of rotation of about 180°.

[0018] The dowel pin is rotatably supported by the mounting device, preferably having at least one retraction contour supported within a slit in the mounting device, the slit being expandable by the at least one retraction contour as the dowel pin rotates, and / or the upper surface of the mounting device and the upper surface of the dowel pin may be positioned in a single common plane at a predetermined rotation angle of about 90° between the mounting device and the dowel pin.

[0019] According to a second aspect of the present invention, an assembly is specified comprising at least one swivelable furniture dowel and a first furniture piece, preferably in the form of a drawer side, wherein the furniture dowel has at least one dowel pin, and the furniture dowel is pre-assembled to the first furniture piece, preferably rotatably supported in a resting position about a pivot axis lateral to the longitudinal axis of the dowel pin, and the dowel pin is located inside the outer cover of the first furniture piece in the resting position of the furniture dowel, i.e., does not protrude beyond the outer cover of the first furniture piece.

[0020] This reduces assembly effort, on the one hand, because it is clear to the assembler where the furniture dowels are used. On the other hand, since the dowel pins are positioned inside the outer cover of the first furniture part in a resting state corresponding to the transport or shipping state, the first furniture part can be packaged together with the furniture dowels in a particularly space-saving manner.

[0021] According to an advantageous embodiment of this assembly, the dowel pin is specified to protrude perpendicularly from one of the outer surfaces of the first furniture piece in the working state.

[0022] In this regard, it has been found advantageous that the assembly includes at least one second furniture piece, preferably in the form of a drawer bottom plate, the second furniture piece having at least one perforation, within which a dowel pin positioned in the working state is received in at least a predetermined area. Supplementarily, the second furniture piece may have a layer plane extending substantially parallel to the outer surface of the second furniture piece, and the dimensions of the dowel pin may be larger in a first direction parallel to the layer plane than in a second direction perpendicular to the layer plane, thereby enabling a higher circumferential pressing force along the first direction than along the second direction.

[0023] A more detailed description of advantageous embodiments of the present invention can be given based on the joining of the drawer side panel and the drawer bottom panel. In modern drawer systems, these parts are delivered to furniture manufacturers individually and separately, and often even supplied by different suppliers. In this case, high packaging density is an absolute requirement. Further separate assembly components are undesirable. If the first furniture part is formed as a panel, the swivel dowel can be assembled into this panel, for example, so that it is flush with the panel when in a resting state. When assembling, for example, to a second furniture part also formed as a panel, the dowel is rotated 90 degrees so that the dowel protrudes perpendicularly from the surface of the first panel. The second panel has holes for receiving the dowel pins. The dowel pins of the dowels are driven into the corresponding holes, for example, by a press or, in very simple cases, by a hammer.

[0024] Furniture boards can be described as a uniform material. However, in most cases, furniture boards are composed of multiple layers. As a result, the fracture characteristics vary considerably depending on the direction of the layers. When a dowel is pressed perpendicular to the surface into a hole with an excessively small diameter in an MDF plate, the force required to pull out the dowel becomes very high, even if it is not glued. In the direction perpendicular to the board layers, a large diameter difference can be selected, thereby achieving high surface pressure in the hole without breaking the board. However, if the cylindrical axis of the dowel pin is located parallel to the layer plane, the layer will already fracture with even a small diameter difference.

[0025] When a swivelable dowel is rotated about an axis positioned laterally to the pin axis, the dowel pin is positioned at a defined angle of rotation. If the dowel pin is formed as a rod with an elliptical or oblong end face, it exerts different pressing forces in the perpendicular direction of action depending on the angle of rotation within a circular hole. In the case of a pin with an oblong cross-section, if the interval between the foci of an elliptical pin is placed parallel to the layer plane, the pin exerts a very small pressing force in the direction perpendicular to the layer plane during drilling, but a very high pressing force in the direction along the plate layer plane.

[0026] Therefore, despite the high surface pressure in the hole, plate tearing is avoided. The force difference is proportional to the distance between the foci. Even without gluing the pin, considerable pulling force is required to release the joint. The harpoon-shaped ribs around the pin provide additional retention against separation of the joint. Alternatively or supplementarily, it may be beneficial to extend the pin at its intended end with a circular projection, which is also chamfered or rounded at that end. This significantly facilitates the insertion of the dowel pin during drilling.

[0027] It has been found to be advantageous that the first furniture piece has at least one recessed housing contour into which a dowel pin is inserted in a resting position, and / or the furniture dowel has at least one swivel pin, via which the furniture dowel is swivelably supported in and / or on the first furniture piece.

[0028] The swivel dowel can be reduced in size by the arc-shaped section in the direction along the swivel pin. Therefore, mounting within the housing contour is only possible at a predetermined swivel angle. Then, when the dowel is swiveled to the resting position, undesirable falling is prevented.

[0029] A further characteristic of a typical dowel joint is that the bores receiving the dowels on each side are concentric in the installed state. When joining the drawer side plate and the drawer bottom plate, it can be advantageous for the dowel joint to have a tolerance gap in one direction. The dowels protruding vertically in the working position should be centered along the drawer bottom plate groove as play-free as possible, thereby ensuring the flushness of the front edge of the bottom plate with respect to the end face of the drawer side in the working state of all components. In such a specific application, the tolerance gap in the direction along the axis of rotation of the dowel is extremely effective, enabling the bottom plate to be better introduced into the chamfered groove below. Such a function is necessary when the surface of the bottom plate to be introduced is not completely flat. One and the same dowel can be used with or without such a tolerance gap. The parameters for this are defined by the shape of the receiving contour including the axis of rotation. The opposing holes provided in the second component are preferably circular and thus correspond to cylindrical holes. The excess depth of the holes does not directly affect the function of the joint.

[0030] If the furniture dowel has at least one mounting device for clamping and attaching the furniture dowel within and / or on the first furniture part, the mounting device has a tension anchor and at least one clamping surface that can be expanded outward via this tension anchor. In this case, the clamping surface is expanded outward minimally at a predetermined rotation angle greater than 90° and less than 180°, preferably at a predetermined rotation angle of about 100°, between the tension anchor and the dowel pin. In this position, the furniture dowel is in a mounting state where it can be attached within and / or on the first furniture part by the mounting device. Preferably, it has been found advantageous that the clamping surface is expanded outward maximally at a predetermined rotation angle of about 180° corresponding to the working state.

[0031] As described at the beginning, the patent right protection is preferably a method for connecting a first furniture part in the form of a drawer side surface to a second furniture part in the form of a drawer bottom plate by means of at least one pivotable furniture hinge according to the present invention. This method comprises the following method steps, namely, the step of arranging the furniture hinge at a predetermined rotation angle relative to the furniture parts to be connected, the step of receiving the hinge pin in a perforation provided in one of the furniture parts at least in a predetermined area, and the step of causing the hinge pin to generate various different peripheral pressing forces within the perforation. This is also required for the method.

[0032] According to an advantageous embodiment of this method, the furniture hinge is attached to the first furniture part in the first method step and / or the hinge pin is rotated from a rest state where it is arranged inside the outer cover of the first furniture part, i.e., a rest state where it does not protrude beyond the outer cover of the first furniture part, to a working state where the hinge pin protrudes vertically from one of the outer surfaces of the first furniture part. In the working state, it is specified that it is received in a perforation provided in one of the furniture parts at least in a predetermined area.

[0033] In this context, it has been found advantageous to attach the furniture hinge to the first furniture part in a mounting state different from the rest state and / or the working state.

[0034] The further details and advantages of the present invention will be explained in more detail below with reference to the drawings based on the description of the drawings.

[Figure 8b)] This figure shows the furniture dowels shown in Figures 8 and 8a) positioned on the first piece of furniture.

[0036] Figure 1 shows an assembly comprising a swivelable furniture dowel 5 and a first furniture piece 1 in the form of a drawer side, the furniture dowel 5 having at least one dowel pin 9. The furniture dowel 5 is in a resting position and is pre-assembled to the first furniture piece 1, rotatably supported about a lateral pivot axis D with respect to the longitudinal axis C of the dowel pin 9 (see also Figure 3). The dowel pin 9 is located inside the outer cover of the first furniture piece 1 when the furniture dowel 5 is in a resting position, i.e., the dowel pin does not protrude beyond the outer cover of the first furniture piece 1.

[0037] A recessed storage contour 3 is provided on the side surface 1 of the drawer. A swivel dowel 5 is inserted into this storage contour 3 in a resting position, so the dowel pin 9 of the swivel dowel does not protrude beyond the outer cover of the furniture part. A bottom plate groove 10 may be provided to accommodate the edge of the drawer bottom plate.

[0038] Figure 2 shows the assembly shown in Figure 1, with the dowel pins 9 positioned in the working position and a second furniture part 2 in the form of a drawer bottom plate provided.

[0039] The dowel pin 9 protrudes perpendicularly from one of the outer surfaces of the first furniture part 1 in the working state. This outer surface of the first furniture part 1 forms the inner surface of the drawer when the first furniture part is a drawer side.

[0040] The second furniture part 2 has at least one perforation 4, within which a dowel pin 9 positioned in the working state can be received in at least a predetermined area. To achieve this, both furniture parts 1 and 2 are moved relative to each other in a direction parallel to the longitudinal axis C of the dowel pin 9.

[0041] The rotation angle of the furniture dowel 5 is denoted by the symbol 13.

[0042] Figure 3 shows an assembly comprising a furniture dowel 5 and a second furniture piece 2, in which the dowel pin 9 of the furniture dowel 5 is positioned in the working position.

[0043] This furniture dowel 5 functions to join furniture parts 1 and 2, for example, to join wood material plates at a right angle. This furniture dowel 5 has a dowel pin 9, in which the dowel pin 9 is formed to generate various outer peripheral pressing forces at a predetermined rotation angle 13 of the furniture dowel 5 relative to the furniture parts 1 and 2 to be joined (see Figure 2) in a receiving hole 4 provided in one of the furniture parts 1 and 2.

[0044] The dimension of the dowel pin 9 in the first direction A is greater than the dimension in the second direction B.

[0045] The dowel pin 9 has a longitudinal axis C, which can also be called the dowel pin axis, and the first direction A and the second direction B are perpendicular to each other and extend perpendicular to the longitudinal axis C.

[0046] The dowel pin 9 is formed in a substantially elliptical or oblong shape in cross-section.

[0047] The second furniture portion 2 has a layer plane 11, which can also be called a plate plane, that extends substantially parallel to the outer surface 17 of the second furniture portion 2, and the dimensions of the dowel pin 9 are larger in a first direction A parallel to the layer plane 11 than in a second direction B perpendicular to the layer plane 11, thereby enabling a higher outer peripheral pressing force along the first direction A, i.e., zone 12, than along the second direction B.

[0048] Figure 3 shows the layer planes 11 of the furniture board extending parallel to the outer surface 17. The first direction A is also parallel to these layer planes 11, and at the same time perpendicular to direction B, and also perpendicular to the dowel pin axis C. The dowel pin 9, which is oriented to be elliptical at the rotation angle 13, is wider in the first direction A than in the second direction B. In this way, in zone 12, an increased circumferential pressure is generated along the board plane 11, whereas in the second direction B, there is little to no circumferential pressure. The illustration of the swivel pin 7 is helpful in showing the orientation. The support portion of the swivel pin defines the rotation angle 13 of the elliptical dowel pin 9.

[0049] Figure 3a) shows the assembly shown in Figure 2, in which case the furniture dowels have not yet been attached to the first piece of furniture.

[0050] The furniture dowel 5 has at least one swivel pin 7 for swivel support within and / or on the first furniture part 1.

[0051] In this embodiment, the swivel pin 7 constitutes a mounting device 14 for clamping and attaching a furniture dowel 5 inside and / or on the first furniture part 1.

[0052] The first furniture piece 1 has at least one recessed housing contour 3 into which a dowel pin 9 is inserted in a resting position.

[0053] As is particularly evident from Figure 4, the dowel pin 9 has at least one pressure-reducing groove 8 and a dowel pin extension 6 that is preferably tapered and / or substantially circular in cross-section.

[0054] The pressure-reducing groove 8 ensures that the driving force does not become excessively high in extremely dense plate material. The circular dowel pin extension 6 is also shown along with its rounded portion. Furthermore, the pivot axis D and the dowel pin axis C, which is perpendicular to this pivot axis D and extends in the same direction as the hole axis in the second furniture part 2, are shown.

[0055] Figure 5 shows a furniture dowel 5 according to the second embodiment, with the dowel pin of the furniture dowel positioned in the working position.

[0056] The furniture dowel 5 has at least one mounting device 14 for clamping and attaching the furniture dowel 5 inside and / or on the first furniture part 1.

[0057] The mounting device 14 has a tension anchor 15 and at least one clamp surface 16 that can be expanded outward through the tension anchor, in which case the clamp surface 16 is minimally expanded outward at a predetermined rotation angle 13 between the tension anchor 15 and the dowel pin 9 that is greater than 90° and less than 180°, preferably at a predetermined rotation angle 13 of about 100°, and preferably at a predetermined rotation angle 13 of about 180° that is maximized outward.

[0058] The tension anchor can be positioned in three positions relative to the clamp surface 16: a working state with maximum expansion (Figure 5), a resting state with slight expansion (Figure 6), and a mounting state with minimal expansion (Figures 7, 7a, and 7b).

[0059] As shown in the figure, there may be multiple clamping surfaces 16 that can be arranged spaced apart from each other via the slits 20.

[0060] To achieve maximum expansion in the working state, the clamping surface 16, which is slidable relative to the tension anchor 15, is supported on the dowel pin 9 via a bearing 18 and, for example, a dish-shaped receiving portion 19.

[0061] Figure 6 shows the dowel 5 in a resting position, which corresponds to a transport or pre-assembly position where the furniture portion is transported together with loosely attached couplings. In this position, the tension anchor 15 is retracted very slightly into the mounting device 14 by another bearing 21, for example, in the form of a small stepped portion on the dowel pin 9. As a result, the clamping surface 16 is only slightly clamped within the furniture portion.

[0062] Figure 7 shows the dowel 5 in the mounted state, in which the clamp surface 16 is minimally expanded outward by a predetermined rotation angle 13 between the tension anchor 15 and the dowel pin 9, which is greater than 90° but less than 180°, preferably about 100°. The tension anchor is in the outermost position, and the mounting device 14, which in this embodiment may also be called an expanded dowel, is completely unloaded, i.e., not expanded. In this position, the furniture dowel 5 can be mounted by the mounting device 14 inside and / or on the first furniture part 1. That is, the furniture dowel 5 is mounted on the first furniture part 1 in a mounted state different from the resting and / or working state.

[0063] To facilitate the introduction of the dowel pin 9 into the borehole 4, the dowel pin 9 may have a dowel pin extension 6, as in the illustrated embodiment, and it may be specified that a slope 22 and, optionally, another slope 23 are provided on this dowel pin extension.

[0064] A method can be constructed for joining a first furniture part 1, preferably in the form of a drawer side, to a second furniture part 2, preferably in the form of a drawer bottom plate, using at least one of the swivelable furniture dowels 5 described above. This method can be constructed by including the following steps: positioning the furniture dowel 5 at a predetermined angle of rotation 13 relative to the furniture parts 1 and 2 to be joined; receiving the dowel pin 9 in at least a predetermined area in a hole 4 provided in one of the furniture parts 1 and 2; and causing the dowel pin 9 to generate various outer peripheral pressing forces within the hole 4.

[0065] In the first method step, the furniture dowel 5 is rotated from a resting state in which it is attached to the first furniture part 1 and / or the dowel pin 9 is positioned inside the outer cover of the first furniture part 1, i.e., a resting state in which it does not protrude beyond the outer cover of the first furniture part 1, to a working state in which the dowel pin 9 protrudes perpendicularly from one of the outer surfaces of the first furniture part 1, and in the working state it is received in a hole 4 provided in at least a predetermined area of one of the furniture parts 1, 2.

[0066] Figures 8, 8a) and 8b) show a furniture dowel 5 according to a third embodiment. The dowel pin 9 is rotatably supported in a mounting device 14 and has at least one retraction contour 24 supported within a slit 20 of the mounting device 14, the slit 20 being expandable by the at least one retraction contour 24 as the dowel pin 9 rotates. In a first position, the retraction contour 24 is positioned within the slit 20 such that it substantially has the width of the slit 20. In a second position (shown by a dashed line in Figure 8a), the retraction contour 24 is positioned within the slit 20 such that it has a second width different from the width of the slit 20. This can be achieved, for example, by the shape of the retraction contour 24 being different from a circle, for example, an ellipse.

[0067] In this embodiment, the retraction contour 24 is a rotating bearing for a rotatable coupling between the mounting device 14 and the dowel pin 9.

[0068] Advantageously, the upper surface 26 of the mounting device 14 and the upper surface 27 of the dowel pin 9 can be positioned within a single common plane 25 at a predetermined rotation angle 13 of approximately 90° between the mounting device 14 and the dowel pin 9. With this configuration, the furniture dowel 5 can be fully recessed into one of the furniture pieces, thereby allowing multiple such furniture pieces to be stacked in a space-saving manner.
