Anterior spinal instrumentation and method for implantation and revision

InactiveUSRE37161E1Reliable and decompressionEnhanced rigidity and fixationInternal osteosythesisBone implantSpinal columnBone trephine
A system and method for anterior fixation of the spine utilizes a cylindrical implant engaged in the intradiscal space at the cephalad and caudal ends of the construct. The implants are cylindrical fusion devices (10) filled with bone material to promote bone ingrowth and fusion of the disc space. An attachment member (40) is connected to each of the fusion devices (10) and bone screws (30) having similar attachment members (33) are engaged in the vertebral bodies of the intermediate vertebrae. A spinal rod (50) is connected to each of the attachment members using an eyebolt assembly (53, 54, 55). In a further inventive method, a revision of the construct is achieved by removing the fusion devices. Each fusion device is engaged by an elongated guide member (62) over which a cylindrical trephine (70) is advanced. The trephine (70) has an inner diameter larger than the diameter of the fusion implant and includes cutting teeth (72) for extracting a core (84) of bone material around the fusion implant. The trephine (70) and guide member (62) are removed along with the bone core (84) containing the fusion implant (10). The trephine (70) is also used to extract a bone dowel from a solid bone mass to be inserted into the space left by the removed bone core (84).

Apparatus for fusing adjacent bone structures

An apparatus for facilitating fusion of adjacent vertebrae includes an implant body dimensioned for positioning within an intervertebral space between upper and lower vertebrae to maintain the vertebrae in desired spaced relation to facilitate fusion thereof. The implant body includes lower and upper surfaces for engaging the respective lower and upper vertebrae and first and second side wall portions extending between the upper and lower surfaces. The first and second side wall portions are substantially solid. At least one of the first and second side wall portions have a substantially narrow longitudinal slit defined therein arranged to enhance flexibility of the one side wall portion. Preferably, each of the first and second side wall portions includes a longitudinal slit. The implant body may define an internal chamber dimensioned for reception of bone growth inducing substances. The implant body includes an internal bore extending through the upper and lower surfaces for reception of bone growth inducing substances. Preferably, the internal bore is cylindrical shaped to receive a cylindrical bone dowel harvested during the surgical procedure, or alternatively, to receive a prepackaged cylindrical rod containing bone growth inducing substances. A plurality of internal bores may be provided in side by side relation.

Device and method for testing mechanical properties of pile-soil contact surface

The invention discloses a device for testing the mechanical properties of a pile-soil contact surface. The device is composed of a sealed pressure chamber, a hollow cylindrical soil sample, a solid cylindrical concrete pile sample and the like. The pile sample is prefabricated, and its diameter is equal to the internal diameter of the hollow cylindrical soil sample, and the two samples joint together closely. The lower end of the concrete pile sample is disposed on a pedestal through a spring assembly, and the upper end is connected to a stress loading system through a dowel bar, which is provided with a stress sensor and a displacement sensor I. The outside of the concrete pile sample is the hollow cylindrical soil sample. Filter paper and permeable stones are disposed at the lower end of the soil sample, and the lower end is positioned on the pedestal, while the upper end of the soil sample is provided with filter paper, permeable stones, a top cover and a displacement sensor II in order. During test, a confining pressure is exerted first for consolidating, and then a static (dynamic) load is exerted on the pile sample for measuring the axial deformation, pore water stress and the like of the pile and the soil. The device provided in the invention has a simple structure, is easy to realize, and can be used to measure the mechanical properties of a pile-soil contact surface under the action of a static (dynamic) load.

Archers flame illuminated arrow nock

An archery arrow including conventional components such as a tubular shaft, a pointed head attached to the forward end of the shaft, fletching on the rearward portion of the shaft and a nock at the rear end of the shaft. The arrow structure also includes an illuminated nock of the present invention and includes a battery/switch/collar/L.E.D-combined unit, which is held in place by a single anchor pin with the L.E.D. portion of the battery inside a conventional translucent or clear nock. The arrow shaft also uses a wooden dowel or other like material to create a backstop and cushion within the arrow shaft. This may also be permanently constructed as part of the arrow shaft during manufacturing. This helps disperse the load generated from the strings forward motion when released from the bow in a full drawn position between the end cap and the entire battery and switch assembly. Upon shooting the arrow from a longbow, compound, or crossbow, the switch contacts are forced into the “closed switch” position by the forward force generated along the axis of the arrow shaft. Therefore, energizing the L.E.D. light source to give off light through the translucent or clear nock. Once shot and activated it's a simple matter of removing the nock from the shaft pulling rearward on the battery while holding the nock in a stationary position to turn the LED off. With this configuration of components said lighted nock can be dislodged from the arrow shaft and still remain in the lighted position. This invention is also reusable by turning said nock off and reinserting the nock back into the arrow shaft and shooting again. I have also made and tested a working prototype.

Helmet with Improved Shield Mount and Precision Shield Control

A closed face motorcycle helmet includes a shell with an eyeport and a shield attached for hinged motion between a closed position covering and sealing the eyeport and an open position displaced above the eyeport. A hinge plate is attached to the shell on each side and includes a socket into which a hub of the shield is rotatably disposed for hinged movement of the shield. A lever assembly having a downwardly extending lever and a hub with two dowels is attached to the bottom of the hinge plate. The lever assembly is manually movable between a central home position, a forwardly rotated shield cracking position, and a rearwardly rotated shield restraining position. A motion plate is attached to a lower edge of the shield and covers the hub and dowels of the lever assembly when the shield is closed. Surfaces on the inside of the motion plate interact with the dowels of the lever assembly to provide multiple precision shield control functions. Specifically, flipping the lever forward cracks the shield slightly open to eliminate fog and flipping it rearwardly applies an additional restraining force to the shield preventing it from being blown open by aerodynamic forces, especially at high speeds. A live beam mechanism with micro detents interacts with a projection on the shield to provide fluid-like operation of the shield and the ability to position the shield at virtually any location between fully closed and fully opened.
