A surgical instrument is disclosed. According to various embodiments, the instrument includes a handle assembly and a drive system that is at least partially supported by the handle assembly. A surgical implement may be operably coupled to the handle assembly for receiving at least two independent drive motions from the drive system to cause the surgical implement to perform at least two surgical activities. The instrument may further include a timing indicator on at east one of the handle assembly and the surgical implement to provide an indication of an amount of time that has elapsed from an application of one of the control motions while maintaining an ability to selectively apply a second control motion after the first control motion has been applied.

The present invention provides robotic surgical instruments and systems that include electrosurgical cutting/shearing tools and methods of performing a robotic surgical procedure. The surgical instruments can advantageously be used in robotically controlled minimally invasive surgical operations. A power head for a surgical apparatus is disclosed having at least one battery-retaining structure defining a battery ejection path. The battery-retaining structure is configured to receive at least one battery. The power head further includes at least one sealing member extending around the one or more battery-retaining structures and configured to enable ejection of at least one battery from the structure along the battery ejection path. The power head may include a handle assembly that includes the battery-retaining structure. The sealing member extends around the structure such that the sealing member is configured to enable ejection of at least one battery from the battery-retaining structure by one hand of a user. The power head may include at least one energy storage mechanism that enables ejection by one hand of a user of at least one battery.

A surgical apparatus for application of surgical clips to body tissue is provided. The surgical apparatus includes a housing, a drive assembly, a trigger, and a shaft assembly. The trigger is operatively connected with the drive assembly. The drive assembly is at least partially positioned within the housing. The shaft assembly extends distally from the housing and has a first tubular member pivotally connected with a second tubular member located distally from the first tubular member. An articulation mechanism is operatively connected between the first and second tubular members, and includes a gear rack, at least one gear, and a gear segment, respectfully connected with each other to pivot the second tubular member about the pivot axis. The gear rack and at least one gear are located within the first tubular member. The gear segment extends proximally from the second tubular member.

Improved robotic surgical systems, devices, and methods often include a first assembly with a surgical end effector supported and manipulated relative to a first base by a first robotic linkage, while a second surgical end effector manipulated and supported relative to a second, independent base by a second robotic linkage. One or more of these robotic assemblies may be moved relative to the other.
