A device for use as a portal in percutaneous minimally invasive surgery performed within a patient's body cavity includes a first elongated hollow tube having a length adjusted with a self-contained mechanism. The first elongated tube includes an inner hollow tube and an outer hollow tube and the inner tube is adapted to slide within the outer tube thereby providing the self-contained length adjusting mechanism. This length-adjustment feature is advantageous for percutaneous access surgery in any body cavity. Two or more elongated tubes with adjustable lengths can be placed into two or more adjacent body cavities, respectively. Paths are opened within the tissue areas between the two or more body cavities, and are used to transfer devices and tools between the adjacent body cavities. This system of two or more elongated tubes with adjustable lengths is particularly advantageous in percutaneous minimally invasive spinal surgeries, and provides the benefits of minimizing long incisions, recovery time and post-operative complications.

Biocompatible crosslinked polymers, and methods for their preparation and use, are disclosed in which the biocompatible crosslinked polymers are formed from water soluble precursors having electrophilic and nucleophilic functional groups capable of reacting and crosslinking in situ. Methods for making the resulting biocompatible crosslinked polymers biodegradable or not are provided, as are methods for controlling the rate of degradation. The crosslinking reactions may be carried out in situ on organs or tissues or outside the body. Applications for such biocompatible crosslinked polymers and their precursors include controlled delivery of drugs, prevention of post-operative adhesions, coating of medical devices such as vascular grafts, wound dressings and surgical sealants. Visualization agents may be included with the crosslinked polymers.

A system and method for intra-operatively providing a surgeon with visual evaluations of possible surgical outcomes ahead of time, and generating simulated data, includes a medical imaging camera, a registration device for registering data to a physical space, and to the medical imaging camera, and a fusion mechanism for fusing the data and the images to generate simulated data. The simulated data (e.g., such as augmented X-ray images) is natural and easy for a surgeon to interpret. In an exemplary implementation, the system preferably includes a data processor which receives a three-dimensional surgical plan or three-dimensional plan of therapy delivery, one or a plurality of two-dimensional intra-operative images, a three-dimensional model of pre-operative data, registration data, and image calibration data. The data processor produces one or a plurality of simulated post-operative images, by integrating a projection of a three-dimensional model of pre-operative data onto one or a plurality of two-dimensional intra-operative images.

The present invention relates to a method for reducing adhesions associated with post-operative surgery. The present method comprises administering or affixing a polymeric composition preferably comprising chain extended, coupled or crosslinked polyester/poly(oxyalkylene) ABA triblocks or AB diblocks having favorable EO/LA ratios to a site in the body which has been subjected to trauma, e.g. by surgery, excision or inflammatory disease. In the present invention, the polymeric material provides a barrier to prevent or reduce the extent of adhesions forming.

The invention disclosed herein is a tissue-anchoring system, including a tissue-anchoring device and tissue anchors. The tissue-anchoring device includes a housing and a tissue anchor positioned on the tissue-anchoring device that will be inserted into a tissue or secured onto a tissue. The device may optionally have a plunger assembly slidably positioned in the housing to assist advancing anchor into a tissue. The tissue anchor has a barb end and a shaft. The barb end is adapted to resist removal from a tissue after the anchor has been inserted. The tissue anchor shaft and the barb end may be hollow. The anchor shaft has an attachment member distal from the barb end for direct attachment to a tissue or for attachment of sutures or slings. The tissue anchors may include an adjustment mechanism for intra- or post-operative adjustments.

An apparatus and method of use are disclosed to treat urological disorders. The biocompatible device includes a handle, needle, dilator and sling assembly configured to be minimally invasive and provide sufficient support to the target site. In addition, the configuration of the sling assembly also allows the sling to be adjusted during and/or after implantation. A method of performing surgery on a patient comprising the step of comparing a chosen patient's data to statistical data in a repository of patient data to develop a patient specific model, wherein the data comprises information from two or more sub databases selected from the group consisting of workflow data, electronic medical records, diagnostic data, biological data, measurement data, anatomical data, physiological data, genetic data, molecular data, imaging data, chemical data, clinical laboratory data, simulated data, coordinate data and surgical result and wherein the patient specific model aids in the preoperative, operative or post operative phase of surgery performed in real time on the patient.

An improved bone graft is provided for human implantation, bone graft includes a substrate block of high strength biocompatible material having a selected size and shape to fit the anatomical space, and a controlled porosity analogous to natural bone. The substrate block may be coated with a bio-active surface coating material such as hydroxyapatite or a calcium phosphate to promote bone ingrowth and enhanced bone fusion. Upon implantation, the bone graft provides a spacer element having a desired combination of mechanical strength together with osteoconductivity and osteoinductivity to promote bone ingrowth and fusion, as well as radiolucency for facilitated post-operative monitoring. The bone graft may additionally carry one or more natural or synthetic therapeutic agents for further promoting bone ingrowth and fusion.

Intraocular devices for use in and attached to the natural lens capsule of an eye are provided. The lens capsule may be maintained in a configuration to avoid post-operative changes that are deleterious to vision. Single or dual optic systems are provided, which may be accommodating. A device to facilitate post-operative sternal closure by twisting the opposite end regions of the suture wire together comprises spaced guides in the form of limbs (1 and 2) with passageways (3 and 4) through which the proximal wire ends (12) and (13) may be fed and a cross-piece (7) transversely positioned with respect to said guides whereby, in use, the wire end regions may be bent across and supported by the cross-piece. The cross-piece includes a discontinuity (8) with a spacing adapted to be less than the thickness of wire. As the tension in the wire increases during the course of the twisting motion a point will be reached when the wire end regions forcefully deform the cross-piece (7) enabling the wires to pass through the discontinuity. Thus an indication is given when a maximum tension is reached.

A robot-guided system to assist orthopaedic surgeons in performing orthopaedic surgical procedures on pre-positioned inserts, including for the fixation of bone fractures, and especially for use in long bone distal intramedullary locking procedures. The system provides a mechanical guide for drilling the holes for distal screws in intramedullary nailing surgery. The drill guide is automatically positioned by the robot relative to the distal locking nail holes, using data derived from only a small number of X-ray fluoroscopic images. The system allows the performance of the locking procedure without trial and error, thus enabling the procedure to be successfully performed by less experienced surgeons, reduces exposure of patient and operating room personnel to radiation, shortens the intra-operative time, and thus reduces post-operative complications.

The present invention relates to medical prostheses and methods of manufacturing those devices. In particular, the prostheses are temporarily stiffened meshes with particular coatings to provide initial stiffness and thereby permit easier surgical handling for treatment or reconstruction of soft tissue defects. Preferred embodiments include surgical meshes coated with one or more biodegradable polymers that can act as a stiffening agent by coating the filaments or fibers of the mesh to temporarily immobilize the contact points of those filaments or fibers and/or by increasing the stiffness of the mesh by at least 1.1 times its original stiffness. The devices of the invention can also provide relief from various post-operative complications associated with their implantation, insertion or surgical use. By including biologically active agents and/or drugs in the coating, the devices provide prophylaxis for and can alleviate side effects or complications associated with the surgery or use of prostheses in general.

Translational bone fixation assemblies, kits containing such assemblies, and methods of use are described herein. The described assemblies may be used in spinal fusion procedures in which a damaged or diseased disc (or part of a disc) is removed from between a pair of vertebrae and a spinal fusion spacer is placed between the vertebrae. The assemblies may be applied to an anterior portion of the affected vertebrae to span the affected disc space, and may be fixed to the vertebrae using bone screws. The assemblies may function to maintain the vertebrae aligned during the initial period following fixation in which fusion of the spacer to the adjacent vertebrae occurs. The assemblies may also function to share some of the axial spinal load applied to the fusion spacer to prevent extreme subsidence of the spacer into the vertebral body, such as where the patient has poor bone quality. The assemblies may also act to prevent the spacer from being expelled from the disc space during the initial post-operative period. Finally, these assemblies may be used in other parts of the body where the advantages of the assemblies are desired or applicable.

A method of treating glaucoma in an eye by managing fluid flow past an implanted shunt having an elastomeric plate and a non-valved elastomeric drainage tube. The plate is positioned over a sclera of the eye with an outflow end of the elastomeric drainage tube open to an outer face of the plate. An inflow end of the drainage tube tunnels through the sclera to the anterior chamber of the eye. The plate may have regions of greater propensity for cell adhesion alternating with regions of lesser cell adhesion. For example, regions of texturing around the plate or drainage tube may be provided to control the size of a bleb that forms over the implant. The effective surface area of the plate may be balanced against a number of fenestrations. The drainage tube has a reduced profile and may be shaped with a non-circular external cross-section to reduce its height. A scleral groove may be used to further reduce the height of the drainage tube on the sclera. A flow restrictor for the early post operative period will immediately lower the intraocular pressure (IOP) and simultanously prevent hypotony.

The invention includes a method and system for intra-operative navigation of a joint replacement operation, without recourse to pre-operative imagery of pre-operative computerized simulations. Trackable markers and a locating system are employed to track first and second bones. A computer receives positional information regarding the trackable markers and calculates (predicts) at least one suggested combination of components of a modular implant system to produce a desired post-operative skeletal relationship.

An apparatus for the automatic delivery to an animal of a beneficial agent such as analgesia by infusion with the pain of the animal being taken into account when determining the rate of dispensing the agent. As the pain experienced by an animal and therefore its distress is manifested in increased agitation, the apparatus includes elements for the measurement of the frequency and amplitude of an animal's movement and the generation of a trigger signal when the either the frequency or the amplitude exceeds a predetermined threshold. The trigger can be used to generate a visual or audible alarm. The apparatus also preferably includes a dispensing means for delivering doses of beneficial agent to the animal in response to the trigger signal. The apparatus serves primarily to reduce the post-operative distress experienced by an animal by providing for timely administration of analgesic compounds. The apparatus also aids the animal care-giver by reducing the amount of time spent assessing the animal and administering beneficial compounds.

The present invention, in the preferred embodiment, is a surgery recovery brassiere which resolves many of the problems faced by women who have undergone breast surgery and particularly, mastectomy. The present invention comprises front panels, prosthesis panels, rear panels, torso band, straps, drain tube apertures and fluid collection storage pouch.More specifically, two front panels each comprise a cup portion and a conforming portion. The prosthesis panels are attached to the rear facing of the cup portion of the front panel to form enclosed pockets to hold one or two prosthesis. Each of the two rear panels are joined at one end to the front panels and extend to meet the opposing rear panel at a back closure. The free end of each of the front panels meet to form a front closure. Straps extend from the top of the front panel to the top of the adjacent rear panel. The torso band extends around the lower edge of the surgery recovery brassiere to form an almost continuous strip of material along the lower edge of the front and rear panels.The surgery recovery brassiere further accommodates post-operative surgical drainage systems composed of one or more drain tubes and associated fluid collection bulbs. The position of drainage tube apertures, generally located proximate to the joint between the front and rear panels, allow drainage tubes to protrude from the chest wall, through the apertures and into the collection storage pouch. Tab closures allow the wearer to secure the drainage tubes within the aperture to further reduce movement of the tubes and disturbance of the drainage system. The storage pouch provides pockets with elastic top entry so that collection bulbs are within easy, convenient reach for emptying lymphatic fluids and other waste materials. The upper edge of the storage pouch releasably attaches to the torso band with a hook-and-loop fastener system.
