468 results about "Surgical wound" patented technology

A surgical wound is a wound associated with a surgical site. Surgical wounds are a point of vulnerability for patients recovering from surgery, as infectious material can enter the wound and cause complications.

Easily placeable and removable wound retractor

The invention is directed to a surgical wound retractor for retracting and sealing an incision and forming a functional opening or channel through which a surgical procedure may be executed. The wound retractor provides a path for a surgeon to insert his hand and / or instruments through the opening formed by the wound retractor. The wound retractor is sized and configured to be easily placed through a small incision and removed without further insult to the body tissue adjacent to the incision. The wound retractor is adapted to dilate a surgical wound incision to a desired diameter, and comprises a first ring having a diameter greater than the desired diameter of the wound incision and being adapted for disposition interiorly of the wound incision; a second ring having an annular axis and a diameter greater than the desired diameter of the wound incision and being adapted for disposition exteriorly of the wound incision; and a flexible sleeve disposed in a generally cylindrical form between the first ring and the second ring, the first ring having at least one notch to facilitate folding or collapsing of the first ring during insertion and removal of the first ring through the wound incision. The first ring may further comprise a second notch disposed on an opposing end of the first notch to further facilitate folding or collapsing of the first ring. With this aspect, the first ring is folded by squeezing between the first and second notches during insertion and removal of the retractor from the incision. In another aspect, the wound retractor may further comprise a tether having a length, a first end attached to the first ring interiorly of the sheath, and a second end disposed outside of the wound incision, wherein the tether facilitates removal of the first ring by pulling on the second end to retrieve the first ring through the wound incision.

Fixing and navigating surgery system in vertebral pedicle based on structure light image and method thereof

The invention provides a fixing and navigating surgery system in a vertebral pedicle based on a structure light image. The system comprises a structure light scanner, an infrared navigating and positioning apparatus, a dynamic standard, a surgery apparatus with a plurality of infrared luminous diodes and a computer, wherein the structure light scanner and the infrared navigating and positioning apparatus are arranged in a positioning way; the surgery apparatus is provided with the plurality of infrared luminous diodes, and the infrared light transmitted from the diodes are captured by the infrared navigating and positioning apparatus to define the relationship between the navigation coordinate system of the infrared navigating and positioning apparatus and the surgery apparatus coordinate system of the surgery apparatus; and the dynamic standard which is clamped on the patient vertebra is also provided with a plurality of infrared luminous diodes for instantly tracking the change of a patient coordinate system to the navigation coordinate system. The invention replaces doctor manual pointing with the structure light image scanning, reduces the manual operation error, and reduces the injure of the X ray to the doctor and the patient; and the dynamic standard also has the characteristics of small volume and good function, can improve the reliability of the surgery and the precision of the nail implantation, and reduces surgical wounds.

Negative pressure wound therapy fluid collection canister

A system for subatmospheric pressure therapy in connection with healing a surgical wound includes a wound dressing dimensioned for positioning relative to a wound bed of a subject, a subatmospheric pressure mechanism having a vacuum source for presenting subatmospheric pressure at the wound bed and a collection canister. The collection canister includes a canister housing defining an internal chamber for collecting exudates from the wound bed removed under subatmospheric pressure, an inlet to receive the exudates for depositing in the internal chamber, an outlet in fluid communication with the vacuum source and a valve mounted adjacent the inlet. The valve is adapted to open in the presence of a vacuum condition within the internal chamber to permit the exudates to flow therethrough and to close in the absence of a vacuum condition within the internal chamber. The valve reduces the amount of exudates leakage, and eliminates the need for the use of clamping or the like to clamp about the system tubing. The collection canister may include a valve housing at least partially disposed within the internal chamber of the canister housing. The valve housing defines a valve seat having an opening in fluid communication with the inlet. The valve is mounted to the valve seat adjacent the opening and movable relative to the valve seat between a closed position occluding the opening of the valve seat and an open position at least partially exposing the opening in the valve housing. The valve may be a zero closure valve such an umbrella valve.

Miniature magnetomechanical tag for detecting surgical sponges and implements

Externally detectable electronic article surveillance markers are attached to surgical implements, such as sponges and surgical instruments, appointed for use in a surgical wound. The attachment mechanism facilitates detection by an external interrogating field before the wound has been closed and the patient has left the operating table. The markers are responsive to the imposition of an interrogating field produced by an electronic article surveillance system. Markers contain one or more magnetomechanically responsive elements that are urged into mechanical resonance by the interrogating field. The ring-down of the resonance and the associated dipolar electromagnetic field provide a signal-identifying characteristic detected by a detection system. Upon detection, an audible or visible signal is triggered to alert relevant medical personnel to the need for follow-up care and removal of the offending item. The resonance occurs at a frequency ranging from about 70 to 300 kHz. Misadventures during operative procedures—especially those wherein implements remain undiscovered at the time of surgery and are retained indefinitely within the surgical cavity, often entailing dire consequences to the patient—are virtually eliminated. The attachment mechanism and markers assure that surgical implements are reliably detected and removed before completion of the surgical procedure.
