Pressurized seal for submersible pumps

A submersible pump employs a sealed, oil-filled chamber with a moisture-sensing probe to detect the presence of any pumpage, such as water, which has leaked into the chamber. If contamination is detected, the pump may be shut down for repairs before it fails. Two mechanical seals are installed the lower seal is located between the pump and the oil chamber and an upper seal is located between the oil chamber and the motor. The improvement disclosed herein combines a pressurized oil accumulator with the pump oil chamber described above. The accumulator is divided into two compartments separated by a bladder, one compartment being connected to the reservoir of the pump and filled with oil for providing make-up oil to the reservoir and for accepting surplus (expansion) oil from the reservoir. The second compartment is pressurized and applies pressure to the bladder that, in turn, transfers the pressure to the oil in the first compartment and to the oil-filled chamber. The purpose is to pressurize the pump oil chamber in order to equalize pressure across the seals and thereby prevent failure of the seals or, at least, extend their life. The invention also includes apparatus for purging the motor casing with air and a pressure transducer for detecting a decrease in reservoir oil pressure.

Gaseous fuel injector using liquid fuel as lubricant and pressure-transmitting medium

A fuel injector injects high-pressure gaseous fuel directly into a cylinder of an engine. A small amount of liquid fuel is used in the injector to lubricate sliding portions of the fuel injector in addition to utilizing it as a medium for transmitting driving force. The fuel injector includes a nozzle member having injection holes at its elongated end and a needle slidably disposed in an elongated center hole of the nozzle member. The needle is driven by pressure of the liquid fuel introduced into a control chamber to open or close the injection holes. The pressure in the control chamber is controlled by a switching valve which is in turn driven by an actuator such as an electromagnetic or piezoelectric actuator. The liquid fuel is injected together with the high-pressure gaseous fuel after lubricating the sliding portions between the nozzle member and the needle.

A hydraulic pressure compensation system for valve actuator assemblies is described having particular application for subsea wellhead installations. The compensation system includes at least one valve actuator assembly having a housing that retains a reciprocable piston therewithin. The piston is spring biased into its fail safe configuration. The valve actuator assembly is hydraulically associated with an accumulator reservoir that defines a closed fluid reservoir and an open fluid reservoir that is exposed to ambient pressures. The two chambers are separated by a membrane. The valve actuator assembly is also operationally associated with a fluid pressure intensifier that boosts the ambient pressure of the accumulator so that an increased fluid pressure may be transmitted to the actuator assembly to bias the actuated valve toward its fail safe configuration. In a described embodiment, the fluid pressure intensifier comprises a housing that defines a chamber having a fluid inlet and fluid outlet. A dual-headed piston is moveably retained within the housing. The piston has an enlarged piston face and a reduced size piston face. Fluid pressure entering the fluid inlet is exerted upon the enlarged piston face, and due to the difference of piston face sizes, an increased pressure is transmitted out of the fluid outlet.

If the pressure of fluid in the first section of pipeline exceeds the reference pressure of the hydraulic fluid supplied to the differential pressure valve, the differential pressure valve is caused to be in an open state, thereby causing the hydraulic pressure in the hydraulically actuated valve to be released via the vent. The protection system is of particular application to sub-sea hydrocarbon extraction wells.

In accordance with illustrative embodiments of the present invention, the arrangement of a combination stuffing box and pressure transmitter system for use with a reciprocating or rotating rod on pumps or pumping systems is disclosed. The stuffing box assembly includes a housing that holds a primary and second seal that are separated by a lubricating reservoir filled with a refined environmentally friendly sacrificial lubricant from the unknown fluid being pumped. The secondary seal transmits the pressure of the fluid being pumped to the sacrificial lubricant that is being sealed from the atmosphere by the primary seal. The secondary seal has its outside diameter sealing against the housing liner and has its inside diameter sealing on the pump rod. It is free to move with respect to the liner and the rod to transmit the pressure of the fluid being pumped to the sacrificial lubricant between the primary and secondary seals, as well as balance the pressure across the secondary seal. By design, any unbalance of pressure across the secondary seal will always be in the direction of the fluid being pumped. The primary seal operates under optimum conditions to prevent leakage of the refined safe lubricant, having known characteristics, to the environment.
