Optoelectronic element with a non-protruding lens

An optoelectronic component has a lens that is formed in the surface of an encapsulant surrounding a semiconductor diode element. With respect to emitters, the lens reduces internal reflection and reduces dispersion to increase overall efficiency. With respect to detectors, the lens focuses photons on the active area of the detector, increasing detector sensitivity, which allows a detector having a reduced size and reduced cost for a given application. The lens portion of the encapsulant is generally nonprotruding from the surrounding portions of the encapsulant reducing contact surface pressure caused by the optoelectronic component. This non-protruding lens is particularly useful in pulse oximetry sensor applications. The lens is advantageously formed with a contoured-tip ejector pin incorporated into the encapsulant transfer mold, and the lens shape facilitates mold release.

Virtual Keyboard Systems with Automatic Correction

There is disclosed an enhanced text entry system which uses word-level analysis to correct inaccuracies automatically in user keystroke entries on reduced-size or virtual keyboards. A method and system are defined which determine one or more alternate textual interpretations of each sequence of inputs detected within a designated auto-correcting region. The actual interaction locations for the keystrokes may occur outside the boundaries of the specific keyboard key regions associated with the actual characters of the word interpretations proposed or offered for selection, where the distance from each interaction location to each corresponding intended character may in general increase with the expected frequency of the intended word in the language or in a particular context. Likewise, in a virtual keyboard system, the keys actuated may differ from the keys actually associated with the letters of the word interpretations. Each such sequence corresponds to a complete word, and the user can easily select the intended word from among the generated interpretations. Additionally, when the system cannot identify a sufficient number of likely word interpretation candidates of the same length as the input sequence, candidates are identified whose initial letters correspond to a likely interpretation of the input sequence.

Supporting web-query expansion efficiently using multi-granularity indexing and query processing

A method and apparatus for efficient query expansion using reduced size indices and for progressive query processing. Queries are expanded conceptually, using semantically similar and syntactically related words to those specified by the user in the query to reduce the chances of missing relevant documents. The notion of a multi-granularity information and processing structure is used to support efficient query expansion, which involves an indexing phase, a query processing and a ranking phase. In the indexing phase, semantically similar words are grouped into a concept which results in a substantial index size reduction due to the coarser granularity of semantic concepts. During query processing, the words in a query are mapped into their corresponding semantic concepts and syntactic extensions, resulting in a logical expansion of the original query. Additionally, the processing overhead is avoided. The initial query words can then be used to rank the documents in the answer set on the basis of exact, semantic and syntactic matches and also to perform progressive query processing.

Reduced size programmable drug pump

Systems and methods provide a programmable or controllable infusate delivery with minimal power consumption using controllable valves and with safe and reliable operation of the delivery system. Embodiments provide programmable control without the need for implantable power sources using multi-stable valves and / or mono-stable valves which are powered externally when activated. Embodiments provide for very low power programmable control, such as by employing micro-electromechanical system valves and a flow restrictor array. An external program controller may be utilized to provide a user interface and which may communicate with the controllable infusate delivery system using wireless links. Internal controller circuitry may provide for flow control changes for different activities or times of day and / or in response to changes in pressure, temperature, etcetera. A safety valve configuration may be implemented which provides a safety flow valve configuration which responds in an opposite manner to particular events than does a corresponding primary flow valve.

Novel folded Mach-Zehnder interferometers and optical sensor arrays

The invention provides novel “folded” Mach-Zehnder interferometers (“folded” MZI's), methods for making folded MZI's, and systems and devices incorporating them. The novel folded MZI's are elaborated from conventional MZI structures by cutting across the interferometer arms of a conventional MZI structure and creating reflectors on the exposed ends of the interferometer arms to form two “folded” MZI's from a single conventional Mach-Zehnder interferometer structure. The novel folded MZI's show promise as sensors having a reduced size and enhanced sensitivity relative to sensors incorporating conventional Mach-Zehnder Interferometers.
