Description

[Technical field]

[0001] The present invention relates to a system and method for depositing packages by a shipping agent in an electronic parcel locker comprising a lockable compartment, and for the subsequent retrieval of those packages. [Background technology]

[0002] Electronic parcel locker systems are used to deliver, store and retrieve various kinds of packages, such as parcels or packages. These parcel locker systems are typically used by a shipping agent to deposit a package, which is then retrieved from the parcel locker by a recipient. Electronic parcel lockers have a user interface for the shipping agent or recipient to operate the parcel locker, which is used to deposit a package in the case of the shipping agent, or to retrieve a package in the case of the recipient. This interface allows the user to enter information to operate the parcel locker, and the parcel locker to give information back to the user. For modern electronic parcel lockers, this functionality is typically fulfilled by a touch screen. This user interface is also used to capture information attached to the package or to some user identification means. This functionality may be fulfilled by other technologies, such as a barcode reader to read a printed barcode, or radio frequency or near field communication to read an RFID tag. An electronic parcel locker system generally comprises a network of parcel lockers that all communicate directly with a remote shipping system which is also responsible for managing the network of parcel lockers and ultimately the data exchange with the carrier information system. Communication between each parcel locker and the remote shipping system is accomplished by long distance communication technologies such as 3G-4G or GSM.

[0003] FIG. 5 illustrates a prior art electronic parcel locker system, which comprises an electronic parcel locker 10 in communication with a remote shipping system 25 via a long distance communication network 20, which generates authorization codes to access the electronic parcel locker, communicates these codes directly to the electronic parcel locker, and manages data regarding packages handled by the electronic parcel locker. The electronic parcel locker comprises a series of compartments 30i with doors that are different sizes and electronically controlled. Electronic parcel locker operation, in particular the opening and closing of the compartment doors, is controlled by a central control unit 32. This central control unit 32 controls communication with the remote shipping system 25 and the parcel locker user interface, which typically includes a touch screen 34 and a barcode reader 36. When a freight agent comes to deposit a parcel at the electronic parcel locker 10, the identification 38 of each parcel 40 must be captured by the electronic parcel locker and associated by the central control unit with the compartment in which the parcel is to be deposited. For tracking purposes, the identification 38 may be in the form of a bar code label affixed to each parcel 40. Generally, the compartments have a standard width and are assembled vertically into columns 42.

[0004] Such prior art electronic parcel locker systems have the following characteristics that can be problematic as further explained below: The electronic parcel lockers communicate directly with the remote shipping system to transfer local data, including data captured by the electronic parcel locker, such as events occurring within the electronic parcel locker, compartment status or parcel identification, etc. Additionally, prior art electronic parcel lockers are costly for manufacturing plants and complex to transport and install due to their volume.

[0005] Prior art electronic parcel locker systems and their associated architectures have several problems. A power connection is required, which can often be difficult to set up. The need for long-distance communication with a server or servers of a remote shipping system either imposes the installation of physical communication cables connecting the electronic parcel locker to a long-distance communication network or the use of a wireless long-distance communication system. In the case of wireless long-distance communication, an additional problem is that it does not work everywhere. In particular, electronic parcel lockers may not be able to be properly installed in underground locations where wireless long-distance communication does not propagate. Another problem is the complexity and cost associated with prior art electronic parcel lockers, which requires specialized capabilities. Electronic parcel lockers may be assembled in a manufacturing plant and shipped to an installation location as a finished unit. However, because the finished unit may be quite bulky, vertical rows of compartments are typically pre-assembled and partially pre-wired in a manufacturing plant, and the rows are shipped separately to the installation location. Specialized capabilities are required to connect the rows, both mechanically and electrically, as well as to start up the system. Because they are not modular, compartments cannot be easily replaced, nor can the compartment configuration be easily upgraded or changed in the field. Overall, prior art electronic parcel lockers are expensive systems that involve costly shipping and installation and servicing.

[0006] There is therefore a need for a new generation of parcel lockers that allows for cost reduction and more flexibility, especially including compartment exchange. Summary of the Invention [Problem to be solved by the invention]

[Diagram 5] FIG. 1 illustrates a prior art electronic parcel locker system. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS

[0050] According to the present invention, an autonomous cluster of compartments is disclosed that interacts locally with a mobile device via short-range wireless communication to avoid the need for power connections and long-range communication, and to allow easy installation and configuration upgrades. Figure 1 shows an embodiment of the inventive parcel locker system, comprising a parcel locker 100, a remote shipping system 106, and a mobile device 102 that communicates via a long-range communication network 104 based on technologies such as 3G-4G or GSM, the system 106 managing the authorized access to the parcel locker 100 and managing data related to the packages handled by the parcel locker 100. The parcel locker 100 consists of an autonomous compartment cluster 110i, which may comprise several compartments 112j. To be easily handled at the installation site or for replacing defective components, such a compartment cluster usually comprises two or three compartments, or eventually just one large compartment. The compartment clusters may be stacked and mechanically fixed to each other to form a row 114. The autonomous compartment clusters are characterized by a design without any power connection or long-distance communication, allowing for easy installation and configuration upgrades and servicing. The compartments 112j and autonomous compartment clusters 110i, having the same width, may have different heights to accommodate best matching with different parcel sizes. The rows 114 may then be mechanically fixed together to form a larger parcel locker unit. Each compartment 112j is fitted on the front side with a hinged door 116j that, when opened, allows a parcel 118j to be deposited in or removed from the compartment. Each autonomous compartment cluster 110i includes a communicating locking module 120i that electronically controls the locking and unlocking of each door of the compartments of the cluster. Each locking module 120i can establish local communication with nearby mobile devices 102 through short-range communication 122i, such as WIFI, IR or Bluetooth.

[0051] The remote shipping system comprises a database system 130, which may include several databases that are ultimately installed on several server systems operated by the freight forwarders or by the service companies that own or manage the parcel locker park. The database system 130 stores the configurations of all parcel lockers 100 to be controlled by the remote shipping system. Each parcel locker configuration (PL configuration) includes a unique parcel locker identification 132 and, for each compartment cluster 110i of the parcel locker, a unique cluster identification 134i. The PL configuration also includes, for each compartment cluster, a cluster status table 136i that includes the level of remaining energy for the compartment cluster, and a cluster broadcast table 138i that includes repetition time period parameters, listening time window parameters, and power release parameters that correspond to optimized parameters for the locking module to broadcast short messages towards mobile devices. The cluster status table also includes, for each compartment of the compartment cluster, a compartment identification, a lock status (locked / unlocked), a door status (open / closed), whether the compartment is broken or available, or whether the compartment is clean or dirty. Each compartment of the compartment cluster may be identified by a compartment index that indexes the compartment among the compartments of the compartment cluster. The association of the unique cluster identification and the compartment index allows for a unique identification of the compartment (unique compartment identification). Furthermore, the PL configuration includes, for each compartment 112j, a compartment identifier 140j, a compartment size 142j, and a unique parcel identification 144j that are replicated on the compartment cluster as visual identifiers for the user when a parcel is deposited in the compartment 112j.

[0052] The database system 130 also stores the parcel locker user's credentials and information for communicating with the users, such as phone numbers and email addresses. In particular, the database system 130 stores, for each parcel recipient, a unique authorization code 150j that is generated by the remote shipping system for each parcel deposited in a compartment and that the parcel recipient may need to retrieve his or her parcel. This unique authorization code 150j is associated with the recipient credentials and is uniquely associated with the parcel identification 144j of the corresponding parcel.

[0053] The mobile device 102 may be a smart phone or a personal digital assistant (PDA) or any computerized mobile device having some short-range communication capabilities compatible with the short-range communication capabilities of the locking module and some long-range communication capabilities compatible with the long-range communication capabilities of the remote shipping system 106. According to the present invention, the mobile device is used as a user interface for operating the compartments of the parcel locker and replaces the central user interface of the prior art parcel locker, the interface of the prior art parcel locker being therefore not required in the parcel locker of the present invention. In particular, the authorization code for accessing the compartment by the parcel recipient may be communicated to the locking module via the recipient's mobile device and therefore does not need to be entered via a user interface as in the prior art parcel lockers. More generally, the mobile device is used as a channel for communication between the remote shipping system and the locking module of the parcel locker, establishing an asynchronous two-way multi-channel communication. As a result, the remote shipping server can, for example, transfer instructions to block operations in a compartment via any mobile device, or the locking module of the compartment cluster can transfer information, such as events regarding operations within a compartment of the compartment cluster, to the remote shipping system via any mobile device.

[0054] Different categories of users, including parcel recipients or landowners or freight forwarders, who may typically use a PDA, can interact with the parcel locker compartments via their mobile devices. Preferably, the mobile device must be a smartphone, especially in the case of parcel recipients, so that they can use their personal smartphone. A Mobile Parcel Locker Application (MPL Application) for locally operating the parcel locker compartments may be installed on the mobile device or, preferably, downloaded from a remote server, for example, via an application store. This MPL Application includes subprograms for installing or servicing the parcel locker, typically for the landowner, or for delivering parcels, typically for the freight forwarder, or for retrieving parcels or receiving notifications, typically for the parcel recipient. Preferably, the MPL Application is instantiated according to the user category. In the case of a freight forwarder PDA, the MPL Application may be integrated into the freight forwarder software module installed on his PDA for delivering parcels.

[0055] The use of autonomous compartment clusters brings ease and flexibility, especially when avoiding the need for any electrical wiring around the compartment cluster or for any power connections. However, there is a key requirement to minimize the power consumption of each compartment cluster, and therefore the need for the locking modules to minimize communication and data exchange, which are significant energy consumers. One way to minimize power consumption is to implement a low energy or sleep mode for the operation of the locking module. In parallel, there is a need to optimize the usability of the parcel locker, including in particular ensuring that the user does not have to perform any specific action to activate the locking module, such as touching a button on the parcel locker, or ensuring that the user does not have to wait too long in front of the parcel locker, for example because of a lengthy data exchange, or ensuring that the data stored in the locking module of the compartment cluster can be easily updated. All these aspects are addressed by the present invention as described below.

[0056] FIG. 2 shows a locking module 120i of a compartment cluster 110i, comprising a processor or group of processors 210 and associated volatile memory 212 that controls the main components of the locking module via a bus 214 or via direct control lines. Short-range wireless communication is implemented by a radio transceiver module 216 with an antenna 218. The radio transceiver module may include several registers or have access to dedicated registers in the locking module memory. These registers dedicated to the radio transceiver module include configuration data for the operation of the radio transceiver module and the antenna, and data for broadcasting short messages sent by the locking module for initial messages or to initiate communication with one or several mobile devices. The door of each compartment of the compartment cluster comprises an electric lock 220n. The door locking of the electric lock is implemented by a power stage 221 that notably provides power to the electric lock under the control of the processor 210 and is directly controlled by the processor 210. A sensor 222n may be provided for each compartment to establish the status of the electric lock (locked / unlocked) or the status of the door (open / closed) or whether the compartment is empty or full. The power supply of the sensor as well as the measurements performed by the sensor are provided by a sensor input / output port (I / O) 223 of the locking module. A visual indicator 224n, such as a light emitting diode (LED), may be mounted on each compartment and controlled by the processor, for example to indicate which compartment should be used for depositing or retrieving a parcel. The power supply of the indicator is provided by an indicator input / output port (I / O) 225 of the locking module. Preferably, when the door is unlocked, it opens automatically, for example thanks to a spring mechanism, thus indicating which compartment should be used without the need for any visual indicator.Although the system is designed to be operated by a parcel recipient using a mobile device such as a smartphone, a lock interface 226, such as a pin pad or another interface known in the art, is also provided to a parcel recipient who does not possess a mobile device, so that the recipient can access the compartments by entering their authorization code using the lock interface. A compartment identifier, such as a number, may be affixed to a visible portion of each compartment, for example to a door, so that a user can identify a particular compartment. Thus, a recipient who does not possess a mobile device can identify a compartment from which a parcel needs to be removed and an associated lock interface placed near the compartment. Alternatively, a cluster identifier, such as a number, may be affixed to a visible portion of each compartment cluster, so that a user can identify a particular compartment cluster and an associated lock interface. Thus, a recipient who does not possess a mobile device can identify a compartment cluster from which a parcel needs to be removed and use the corresponding lock interface to open the compartment.

[0057] The locking module is powered by a power source 228, which may be a replaceable or rechargeable battery, a solar panel or an energy harvesting device or any other electrical energy supply device. To minimize power consumption, an energy management module 230 manages the transition of energy modes, allowing the compartment cluster 110i to operate in different low energy modes or different sleep modes. Each energy mode defines which peripherals or components are available and limits the amount of current consumed by the peripherals or components. For example, the energy management module may turn off or on the power of unused blocks of the volatile memory 212 or turn off or on the wireless transceiver module. The energy management module may include a voltage regulator and a timer for switching between energy modes. A non-volatile memory 240, which is controlled and directly accessible by the processor, stores firmware run by the processor 210 and data received from a remote shipping server via the mobile device or generated within the compartment cluster 110i, such as operational events. The data stored in the non-volatile memory 240 includes a cluster identification 250 that uniquely identifies the compartment cluster, a compartment index 251n that is used to index each compartment within the compartments of the compartment cluster, an event limit 252 that indicates the limit of events that can be stored in the locking module, a cluster status 253 that indicates the state of each compartment of the compartment cluster, a low power status 254 that indicates the status of the power source, and an event table 255 that stores events that have occurred for the operation of all the compartments of the compartment cluster. Typical events that can be stored in the event table include a change in door status and new status (open / closed) or a change in lock status and new status (locked / unlocked) or whether the compartment is dirty or broken or whether a parcel has been deposited in the compartment. The event is temporarily stored in the compartment cluster before forwarding via the mobile device to the remote shipping system for the remote shipping system to monitor and manage the compartment cluster and the park of the parcel locker. Upon successful forwarding of the event to the remote shipping system, the event is cleared from the event table 255 and the event limit 252 is updated if necessary to minimize memory usage in the locking module. The non-volatile memory 240 also stores a function table 260 corresponding to all the functions available for the compartment cluster operation and can be run by the processor 210 upon request by an authorized mobile device, can store a unique authorization code 270n for each compartment of the compartment cluster, which may be required of a recipient for retrieval of a parcel in the compartment, and can store a cluster broadcast table 272.

[0058] To communicate with the locking module 120i by short-range wireless communication, the mobile device 102 also includes a radio transceiver module with an antenna controlled by a processor running associated short-range wireless communication software. In particular, it includes a scanning function to discover different compartment clusters with which it may have to communicate. Such hardware and software components are generally available for smartphones or PDAs.

[0059] When the compartment cluster is not in use, the locking module is in a deep sleep mode, i.e., an ultra-low energy mode, to minimize the power consumption of the compartment cluster. In such a deep sleep mode, the energy level of the compartment cluster is below 10% of the average energy consumption when the compartment cluster is awake and fully operational. Only very limited functionality is available, in particular the radio transceiver module is asleep and the locking module cannot communicate and cannot be woken up by a mobile device in close proximity to the compartment cluster. To be able to initiate a communication session with the mobile device, when in the deep sleep mode, the locking module temporarily partially wakes up to broadcast a short message. This partial wake-up, which corresponds to the low energy sleep mode, activates the radio transceiver module and can be controlled by the energy management module, which can comprise a low energy sleep timer 280 for triggering the transition to the sleep mode. In the sleep mode, the additional functionality is limited to sending a broadcast short message and waiting for a response, compared to the deep sleep mode. The operation of the locking module may be controlled by a processor consisting of several processor modules, including a high energy processor module 210A that controls high level functionality including communication management and access authorization management, which is deactivated in sleep mode, a low energy processor module 210B that controls the wireless transceiver module for sending broadcast short messages and waiting for responses, which is deactivated in deep sleep mode, and an ultra low energy processor module 210C for minimal control. An energy management module manages the switching between these modes and the associated energy consumption. The operation of the locking module may be controlled by separate processors that cooperate and whose activity and energy consumption are managed by the energy management module. For example, a particular processor may control a wireless transceiver module and may be specifically awakened during a sleep mode.

[0060] To minimize power consumption, the locking module is generally kept in a deep sleep mode. To enable communication with the mobile device, a low energy sleep timer 280 periodically triggers a transition from the deep sleep mode to the sleep mode according to a repeating time period. Upon entering the sleep mode, the locking module sends a broadcast short message and actively listens for a response from the mobile device during a limited listening time window. The end of the listening time window is triggered by a listening time window timer 282, which may be included in the energy management module. A mobile device that is in close proximity to a compartment cluster and has short-range communication activated has a scan function to listen for a broadcast short message from the locking module. When the mobile device captures a broadcast short message from the locking module, and if the mobile device needs to establish communication with this locking module, the mobile device immediately sends a response message to the locking module to establish communication, so that the response message can be captured within the limited listening time window of the locking module.

[0061] Receipt of the response message from the mobile device by the wireless transceiver module triggers the full wake-up of the locking module. The energy management 230 activates the processor high-level functionality by activating the high-energy processor module that controls the high-level functionality, or by activating the corresponding processor in case of an architecture with a separate processor in cooperation. A full wake-up of the locking module is required to establish communication with the mobile device, because in sleep mode the locking module cannot perform authorization for a communication session with the mobile device and cannot complete the establishment of communication. Once communication is established, the mobile device then behaves as a client that initiates requests and commands and accepts responses from the locking module. The locking module behaves as a server that receives requests and commands, performs the requested actions, and returns responses. To improve the efficiency of the broadcast short messages and the capture rate of the response messages, several wavelength channels may be used for the exchange between the mobile device and the locking module. Using several channels is also particularly useful when some channels happen to interfere with some other local emissions or are blocked by the environment.

[0062] If no response to the broadcast short message from the mobile device is captured by the wireless transceiver module within the limited listening time window, the listening time window timer 282 triggers an exit from the sleep mode and the energy management 230 manages a return to the deep sleep mode and deactivates the wireless transceiver module and the low energy processor module.

[0063] In order to minimize the power consumption of the locking module, the listening time window must be minimized and the repetition time period must be maximized. However, these adjustments are limited by the need to establish the communication session quickly enough so as not to affect the user experience, thus requiring a sufficiently long listening time window and a sufficiently short repetition time period. In parallel, in order to minimize the power consumption, the power emission of the wireless transceiver module 216 and the antenna 218 of the locking module can also be minimized, as well as the number of wavelength channels, since the number of channels increases with energy consumption. However, the power emission and / or the number of channels of the locking module must be sufficient for the mobile device to capture the broadcast short message from the locking module and to establish a communication session within at least 10 meters from the parcel locker, depending on the environmental conditions.

[0064] Furthermore, the parcel locker system must ensure that broadcast short messages coming from a number of locking modules can be captured in parallel by mobile devices and that communication sessions can be established in parallel by several mobile devices. In the case of short-range communication of Bluetooth type, an optimization of the broadcasting configuration (repetition time period, listening time window, number of channels, power emission) is practiced. For a standard parcel locker configuration with a 20-compartment cluster, the optimized broadcasting configuration corresponds to a repetition time period of 250 ms in the range of + / - 100 ms, a listening time window of 10 ms in the range of +20 ms / -0 ms, a number of channels of 2 or 3, preferably 3, in the wavelength range of 2402-2480 MHz, and a power emission of 0 dBm in the range of +4 dBm / -0 dBm.

[0065] The optimized broadcasting configuration depends on the compartment cluster configuration of the parcel locker. Thus, the broadcasting configuration is attached to each parcel locker configuration and stored in the database system 130 of the remote shipping server. Based on the parcel locker configuration, a cluster broadcast table 138i is defined and stored in the database system 130 for each compartment cluster of the parcel locker. Each cluster broadcast table may be periodically communicated to the corresponding compartment cluster and stored in the cluster broadcast table 272 in the non-volatile memory of the locking module to ensure optimized broadcasting settings depending on the changing configuration and environment. For example, every time a freight forwarder mobile device establishes a connection with a compartment cluster and the cluster broadcast table 272 needs to be updated for that compartment cluster, the cluster broadcast table 138i is communicated by the remote shipping server to the mobile device as part of the parcel locker configuration, and the mobile device communicates the cluster broadcast table to the locking module of the compartment cluster for updating. For complex parcel locker configurations or more difficult environments, each cluster broadcast table may have to be specifically configured. For simpler situations, all cluster broadcast tables for the same parcel locker may be identical. Preferably, the MPL application provides the freight agent or land owner with access to a wizard sub-program to adjust the broadcasting parameters and set the parameters so that they can also be communicated to a remote shipping server.

[0066] The broadcast short message emitted by the compartment cluster and captured by the mobile device includes a unique cluster identification 250, which is used by the mobile device to identify the compartment and is then integrated into the mobile device's response message to the compartment's locking module to establish a communication session. To further minimize the power consumption of the locking module, the broadcast short message also includes some status information regarding the compartment cluster, so that further actions or communications can be avoided or minimized based on this status information. The locking module firmware running on the processor 210 is configured to prepare a broadcast short message that includes the following status information: An event limit 252 indicating that the limit of events stored in the non-volatile memory 240 has been reached, which usually means that the limit of memory space allocated to events in the non-volatile memory 240 has been reached, and therefore a parcel deposit should be initiated, for example with a specific locking module, until some of the events have been cleared, i.e., they can usually be successfully transferred to a remote shipping server. A cluster state 253 that specifically defines whether each compartment of a compartment cluster is empty or full, and thus indicates whether a parcel is available for deposit or is not in the compartment. · A low power status 254 such that no specific connection or request is required to obtain the low power status.

[0067] The status information is provided to the mobile device to prevent the mobile device from initiating some actions that may impair the operation of the locking module or may not be completed. For example, if a low power status is reached, interacting with the locking module before the power supply is replenished may drain the power supply completely, resulting in an incomplete action and an impaired locking module condition. Preferably, to minimize the size of the status information, the event limit and the low power status are both single bits. The compartment state is a concatenation of bits, with each bit corresponding to a Boolean state such as an empty / full compartment or an open / closed door or a locked / unlocked compartment.

[0068] The status information of the broadcast short message is prepared while the locking module is fully awake. The broadcast short message may then be stored in a specific register for easy access and broadcasting when the locking module is in sleep mode. The broadcast short message is limited in size to make it easy to handle and to minimize the resources and energy required for the locking module to send it.

[0069] When a mobile device receives a broadcast short message from a particular compartment cluster, the mobile device may need to establish a communication session with that particular compartment cluster, for example, to transfer events stored in the compartment cluster to a remote shipping system, or to deposit or retrieve parcels from a compartment of the compartment cluster. To prevent any communication, and ultimately any access to the compartment cluster, from unauthorized devices, a preferably unique authenticator must be provided as part of the request from the mobile device to establish a communication session, and this authenticator is checked by the locking module of the compartment cluster to authorize the establishment of the communication session.

[0070] The authenticator includes or is sent with a unique cluster identification that is looked up by the locking module to ensure that the request is addressed to the appropriate compartment cluster, and includes a compartment index that identifies the compartment associated with the communication session to be established (e.g., for deposit to or retrieval from that particular compartment). A request from the mobile device to establish a communication session may be received by other compartment clusters but rejected because there is no match in cluster identification. Once a communication session with the mobile device is authorized by a compartment cluster, any request from any other mobile device is rejected. During the communication session, any request from the mobile device to a compartment cluster may need to include the authenticator. The authenticator is generated by the remote shipping system and provided to the mobile device by the remote shipping system.

[0071] The authenticator also includes a privilege mask, which identifies the functions that are authorized among all available functions in the function table 260. The generation of the privilege mask by the remote shipping system depends on the user and in particular on the user category. The remote shipping system then provides the privilege mask in the authenticator to the mobile device. The privilege mask, as well as the authenticator, are generated by the remote shipping system following the user's login to the MPL application, which is installed on the user's mobile device to interact with the parcel locker compartment and automatically requests the authenticator from the remote shipping system. Following the establishment of the communication session, the privilege mask received by the compartment cluster is used by the compartment cluster to provide access to the functions authorized for the particular user. The privilege mask may be stored in volatile memory and addressed by firmware run by the locking module to look up the functions authorized for the particular user. To help minimize the size of the privilege mask and therefore the data volume exchanged with the locking module, the privilege mask is in a series of bits, preferably a 32 or 64 bit series, with each bit corresponding to a particular function in the function table 260. The bit value indicates whether the function is authorized or not authorized. For example, a bit set to 1 can indicate that the function is authorized and a bit set to 0 can indicate that the function is not authorized. Such a format for the privilege mask allows for compression of information and convenient inclusion of the privilege mask in the authenticator, which prevents the need for additional communication between the compartment cluster and the mobile device to define the authorized functions. For prior art parcel lockers operated by different categories of users requiring access to different functions of the parcel locker, roles are typically predefined and stored in the parcel locker.A specific role is granted to each user, and when the user establishes communication or access with the parcel locker, the role attached to the user is provided to the parcel locker. As a result, when any functional access must be changed and therefore the corresponding roles must be changed, these roles need to be updated and stored in all parcel lockers before any new communication can be established between the user and the parcel locker. Role updates can be performed by downloading from a remote server by long distance communication. However, the use of the privilege mask is a major benefit, since no role updates are required for the locking module when long distance communication is not available as addressed by the present invention. Furthermore, the use of the privilege mask in the form of a series of bits makes the locking module operation particularly efficient, since no translation of string requests to the locking module is required, which is usually the case when, for example, the role attached to the user is provided to the compartment cluster when the user initiates communication or access with the compartment.

[0072] Contrary to prior art parcel lockers, which include a central control unit that monitors and stores the status of the different compartments of the parcel locker and controls the different compartments, the parcel locker of the present invention, which consists of autonomous compartments, does not include any central control unit. In the parcel locker system of the present invention, the monitoring and storage of the status of the compartments is performed by a remote shipping server, which delegates the local control of the compartments to the MPL application. When a parcel deposit in the parcel locker of the present invention is initiated by a shipping agent, a PL configuration is provided by the remote shipping server to the shipping agent MPL application. The PL configuration includes all cluster identities and parcel identities of the parcels deposited in the compartments of the parcel locker. The PL configuration is essential for a user to be able to operate the parcel locker with his mobile device, e.g. for a shipping agent to be able to select in which compartment a parcel may be deposited. Preferably, the PL configuration is requested by the MPL application to the remote shipping server following receipt by the mobile device of a first broadcast short message from a compartment cluster.

[0073] Based on the unique cluster identification 250 included in the broadcast short message and forwarded to the remote shipping server in the PL configuration request, the remote shipping server identifies in its database system 130 the corresponding parcel locker and provides the PL configuration to the mobile device. Once the PL configuration is received by the mobile device, a compartment available for deposit may be identified by the MPL Application, and a communication session with the compartment cluster comprising that compartment may be established by the mobile device for depositing the parcel. Compartment availability is established based on the cluster status table 136i included in the PL configuration provided by the remote shipping server, such as whether the parcel identification is associated with a compartment of the compartment cluster, i.e., whether the compartment identification is associated with the compartment cluster. Based on the event limit 252 received from the compartment cluster with the broadcast short message, the MPL Application establishes that a PL configuration update may be required. In an alternative embodiment, the PL configuration is received from the remote shipping server before the freight agent arrives near the parcel locker and parcel deposit can begin before the broadcast short message is received by the mobile device from all of the parcel locker's compartment clusters, thus minimizing delays for the freight agent.

[0074] Based on the PL configuration, the MPL application can also establish the number of compartment clusters that make up the parcel locker and can check that broadcast short messages are received from all the compartment clusters of the parcel locker. The efficiency of parcel deposit by the carrier depends on the accuracy of the PL configuration provided by the remote shipping server. Therefore, it is important that events related to the compartments of the parcel locker are forwarded to the remote shipping server as soon as possible. Preferably, the events are forwarded as part of any user operation on the parcel locker via the user's mobile device. However, some parcel recipients may retrieve their parcels without a mobile device or some operations do not allow the forwarding of events to the mobile device. Therefore, any event related to a compartment cluster is stored in the event table 255 so that it can be forwarded to the remote shipping server via any mobile device that performs an event upload to the remote shipping server, even during a user operation such as deposit or during a compartment cluster internal operation such as low power status.

[0075] An aspect of the present invention is that the parcel locker system of the present invention enables the establishment of asynchronous bidirectional multi-channel communication between a remote shipping server and a compartment cluster of a park of parcel lockers, where a plurality of mobile devices constitute a multi-channel network. As described above, asynchronous communication is established in the direction from the compartment cluster to the remote shipping server via the mobile device following the establishment of a communication session between the mobile device and the compartment cluster, for example, to transfer data such as events from the compartment cluster to the remote shipping server. The mobile device temporarily stores the data until the transfer to the remote shipping server can be completed. This transfer can be performed by any mobile device with an installed and activated MPL application for operating the parcel locker, whereby the data can be uploaded via the first mobile device that establishes communication with the compartment cluster. In the opposite direction, the remote shipping server communicates, via the mobile device, to the compartment cluster either data such as an authorization code or instructions such as to block the operation of a compartment. The data or request is temporarily stored on the mobile device until the transfer to the compartment cluster can be completed. This asynchronous communication may be practiced by any mobile device that has the MPL application installed and activated.

[0076] Preferably, the remote shipping server selects a number of suitable mobile devices for communicating with the compartment cluster according to pre-configured rules. The pre-configured rules may be that communications from the remote shipping server to a particular compartment cluster are addressed only to mobile devices making requests to the remote shipping system regarding the particular compartment cluster, such as for an upcoming deposit of a parcel. Such rules ensure that communications from the remote shipping server are channeled only through mobile devices that are most likely to establish communication with the particular compartment cluster. Bidirectional communication may be established based on WebSocket technology. According to the present invention, a mobile device with an installed MPL application for operating parcel lockers constitutes a multi-channel asynchronous network for communicating between the remote shipping system and the compartment cluster, thus optimizing the efficiency of communication, and at the same time, the present invention also allows parcel lockers to be operated in areas not covered by long-distance wireless communication. Data or requests from the remote shipping system may be communicated to and temporarily stored on the mobile device prior to entering an area not covered by long-range wireless communications, and data from the compartment cluster may be temporarily stored on the mobile device until the mobile device leaves the area not covered by long-range wireless communications to complete the transfer to the remote shipping system.

[0077] The system is designed to be operated by the parcel recipient either with a mobile device such as a smart phone or without a mobile device, since some parcel recipients may not own a mobile device or may not want to use a mobile device to operate the compartments. Parcel recipients may also own mobile devices that do not have short-range wireless communication capabilities or may not want to activate a mobile device. It is therefore necessary that the parcel locker system of the present invention can be operated by the parcel recipient both remotely with a mobile device and manually using a lock interface, such as a pin pad for entering a unique authorization code. However, automatic access to the parcel locker with a mobile device is the main objective of the present invention, and manual access to the parcel locker is a stopgap procedure. Operating the parcel locker with a mobile device provides a superior user experience since it does not require entering an authorization code. In this preferred mode object of the present invention, access authorization by the compartment cluster is provided by checking an authenticator that is automatically provided by the recipient mobile device and that is initially generated by the remote shipping system.

[0078] To support a stop-gap procedure for manual access, an authorization code is systematically provided to each recipient. For security reasons, the authorization code provided to the recipient to retrieve a parcel is preferably a one-time authorization code uniquely associated with the specific parcel to be retrieved, and therefore this one-time authorization code cannot be used again. The one-time authorization code is generated and managed by the remote shipping system. For each parcel to be retrieved from a compartment, the one-time authorization code needs to be provided to the compartment cluster that comprises that compartment before the recipient comes to retrieve his / her parcel. In one embodiment, the authorization code is requested by the shipping agent MPL application at the time of parcel delivery by the shipping agent, after the parcel has been identified for deposit, for example, by scanning the parcel identification attached to the parcel. Alternatively, in another embodiment, the authorization code is pre-generated by the remote shipping server and communicated to the MPL application for temporary storage before or when the shipping agent schedules the daily delivery to the parcel locker. Thus, a shipping agent can operate a parcel locker even if the agent is in an area not covered by long range wireless communications.

[0079] Upon receiving the request for an authorization code, the remote shipping system generates an authorization code, which is temporarily replicated in the mobile device. When the parcel is deposited, the authorization code is transferred from the mobile device to the compartment cluster and associated with the compartment (i.e., compartment index) of the compartment cluster where the parcel is deposited, and the remote shipping server is notified of the deposit by uploading a compartment cluster event. The remote shipping server then notifies the recipient, for example, via SMS or email, that the parcel must be retrieved. If the recipient does not have the MPL Application installed, the notification provides the recipient with the parcel locker location and the compartment identifier 140j, as well as the authorization code the recipient needs to enter to open the compartment. If the recipient has the MPL Application installed, the notification simply informs the recipient of the parcel locker location and reminds them that they should use the MPL Application to open the compartment.

[0080] More generally, the benefits of operating a parcel locker with a mobile device also apply to any user, including a landlord or a freight forwarder. Access authorization by the compartment cluster is granted automatically by the user mobile device and by checking an authenticator originally generated by the remote shipping system, thus replacing manual authorization entry, for example, by keypad or by barcode scanning.

[0081] In addition to meeting the need to generate new parcel lockers as mentioned above, the autonomous compartment cluster of the present invention provides additional benefits. All other compartment clusters may continue to operate and communicate, unlike in the case of prior art parcel lockers, where if a compartment cluster locking module malfunctions and in particular cannot communicate any more, the malfunctioning central control unit would prevent the operation of the entire parcel locker and would require immediate intervention. In the case of the parcel locker of the present invention, a simple replacement of the malfunctioning compartment cluster can be performed when it is most appropriate. Another user benefit of the present invention is that each user operates the compartment cluster of the present invention on his own mobile device, thus several users can access several compartment clusters in parallel. During busy periods, several recipients can retrieve their parcels in parallel, or even forwarding agents and recipients can interact with the parcel locker compartment cluster in parallel. Such parallel operations are made possible by the system architecture of the present invention, which provides a locking module that broadcasts short messages that store operational events and update PL configuration information in the mobile device and in the remote shipping system.

[0082] FIG. 3 illustrates an embodiment of the invention for parcel deposit by a shipping agent. When a group of parcels is scheduled to be deposited at a particular parcel locker 100, the deposit task is assigned to the shipping agent. To perform the deposit, the shipping agent must use the mobile device 102 to access the MPL Application for operating the parcel locker. Preferably, the shipping agent must perform a login to access the MPL Application (step 300). The login may be performed by any means known in the art, such as identifier entry via a mobile device interface (e.g., by keying in an identifier on a keypad or touch screen of the mobile device), identification barcode reading by the mobile device, or identification capture by the mobile device via imaging or biometric or radio frequency technology. Alternatively, as part of a single sign-on scheme, the login to access the MPL Application may be combined with the login of general carrier software running on the mobile device for managing the shipping agent's overall activities, for example, when the MPL Application is integrated into such general carrier software. The login to access the MPL application may be combined with the login of the mobile device, for example, when the mobile device is dedicated to carrier activity. Following the carrier login, in step 301, the MPL application initiates communication with the remote shipping server 106 and provides the user credentials. The MPL application may also automatically activate short-range communication in the hope of establishing communication with the parcel locker compartment cluster. After a positive check against the carrier credentials, the remote shipping server authorizes the communication and secure communication is established between the mobile device and the remote shipping server.

[0083] When the shipping agent arrives near the parcel locker, the mobile device starts capturing broadcast short messages from the compartment clusters of the parcel lockers (step 302). After the first capture of the broadcast short message including the unique cluster identification 250, the MPL application requests data to perform the deposit from the remote shipping system, including in particular an authenticator for establishing communication with the compartment cluster. Based on the unique cluster identification 250, the remote shipping system can identify the corresponding parcel locker to return the appropriate data, and a check can be performed as to whether the shipping agent is in front of the appropriate parcel locker. The remote shipping system generates a preferably unique authenticator for each compartment of the parcel locker and provides these authenticators to the MPL application, so that the mobile phone can establish communication with each compartment cluster. Each authenticator includes or is sent with a unique cluster identification 134i obtained from the PL configuration stored in the database system 130 of the remote shipping system, and also includes a privilege mask generated by the remote shipping system based on the user certificate and on the user category (step 304). Based on the unique cluster identification 250, the remote shipping system also provides the mobile device with a PL configuration that includes, among other things, for each compartment cluster, a cluster identification and cluster status table 136i, and for each compartment, a compartment identification and compartment size 142j (step 306). In parallel, the remote shipping server may have requested or received from the transport system a notification regarding parcels that should be deposited in its parcel locker. Based on this notification, the remote shipping system may also provide a list of identifications corresponding to parcels that should be deposited in the parcel locker (step 308).In an alternative embodiment, for example in the case of computer planned delivery, the authenticator and PL configuration may be provided to the MPL Application before the shipping agent arrives near the parcel locker, so that any transmission delays may not affect the delivery process before the parcel locker. Upon receiving the first broadcast short message, the MPL Application may check for a match between the unique cluster identification 250 included in the broadcast short message and the cluster identification 134i of the PL configuration received from the remote shipping system, as stored in the database system 130.

[0084] In step 310, the freight agent captures with his mobile device 102 the parcel identification attached to the parcel to be deposited in the parcel locker 100, for example by scanning the parcel identification barcode printed on the parcel, or by reading the radio frequency signal emitted by a tag affixed to the parcel, for example by RFID or NFC technology, or finally by manually depositing the parcel identification. The size of the parcel may be captured at the same time as the parcel identification or may need to be deposited separately. Following successful capture of the parcel identification by the mobile device 102, the mobile device 102 may check for a match between the parcel identification captured by the mobile device 102 and the list of identifications of parcels to be deposited, thus ensuring that the parcel actually needs to be deposited in the parcel locker. In step 312, based on the PL configuration, the MPL application selects in which compartment the parcel can be deposited according to pre-set rules including at least that the compartment is empty and the compartment size matches the parcel size. Other rules for selecting a compartment for deposit may include rotation rules between compartments to ensure homogenous use of the compartments, to allocate power consumption, or to prevent premature wear-out of any particular compartment. Rotation may be scheduled by the remote shipping server based on the level of remaining energy for different compartment clusters of the parcel locker, i.e., the level of remaining energy that may be communicated via the mobile device by each locking module. Following compartment selection, the MPL application requests a unique authorization code from the remote shipping server, which will be uniquely associated with the parcel and compartment. The authorization code is generated by the remote shipping server and communicated to the MPL application for temporary storage (step 314).Alternatively, authorization codes for all parcels to be deposited at the parcel locker are pre-generated by the remote shipping server and communicated to the MPL application for temporary storage before or as the freight forwarder schedules its daily delivery to the parcel locker. Finally, the authorization code may be generated immediately after the recipient registers the parcel shipment and a unique parcel identification is associated with the parcel. Thus, the freight forwarder arrives near the parcel locker with the authorization code already stored on his / her mobile device and can operate the parcel locker even if he / she is in an area not covered by long-range wireless communications.

[0085] As soon as the mobile device receives a broadcast short message from the compartment cluster of the selected compartment (identified by the unique cluster identification 250 included in the broadcast short message), the mobile device sends a response message to the compartment cluster to establish communication so that the response message can be captured within the limited listening time window of the locking module. The response message includes an authenticator provided by the remote shipping server and associated with the compartment where the deposit needs to occur. Once the response message is received by the locking module, the locking module is fully started and authentication is performed according to the short-range wireless protocol. As part of the authorization process by which the locking module authorizes the mobile device to establish communication, the locking module validates the received authenticator and checks the unique cluster identification included in or sent with the authenticator by comparing this unique cluster identification with the cluster identification 250 stored in the non-volatile memory 240 (step 316). Once communication between the locking module and the mobile device is established, the locking module stops broadcasting short messages, but the mobile device may continue to listen to other compartment clusters and capture broadcast short messages that contain any status information that has not yet been captured. By doing so, the mobile device can eventually update its information about the PL configuration in parallel by initiating several requests for events stored in several compartment clusters.

[0086] In step 318, the mobile device sends a request to unlock the door of the selected compartment, the request including the authenticator. After verifying the requested unlock action based on the privilege mask included in the authenticator, the locking module unlocks the compartment door. If the door mechanism is not provided for automatic opening, the locking module may activate a visual indicator 224n, such as an LED, to indicate which door should be opened to deposit the parcel. In step 320, the shipping agent deposits the parcel in the compartment and closes the door, an event that is detected by the sensor 222n and stored in the event table 255 of the compartment locking module. Preferably, the shipping agent is required to confirm the deposit before the mobile device requests the locking of the compartment door, thus ensuring that the parcel deposit actually occurred. Alternatively, the mobile device automatically requests the locking module to lock the door, or the locking module automatically locks the door. After verifying the requested action based on the privilege mask included in the authenticator, the locking module locks the compartment door. Then, in step 322, the mobile device requests transfer of a unique authorization code uniquely associated with the parcel and generated by the remote shipping server. After verifying the requested transfer action based on the privilege mask included in the authenticator, the locking module stores the unique authorization code 270n in non-volatile memory 240, communication between the mobile and the compartment cluster is disconnected, and the locking module of the compartment cluster resumes broadcasting the short message. As long as some parcels remain for deposit, the shipping agent proceeds with step 310 (capturing parcel identification) and proceeds with the following steps up to step 322 (step 324).Based on the list of identities of parcels to be deposited in the parcel locker, the MPL application can define whether the deposit process is complete by comparing the parcel identification captured in step 310 with the list of identities of parcels for deposit.

[0087] In a preferred embodiment, immediately following an event occurring within a compartment, the locking module of the compartment cluster stores the event in the event table 255. During the deposit process, other requests may be sent by the mobile device to the compartment cluster, such as a transfer of the event stored in the locking module. Preferably, the transfer of the event stored in the compartment cluster is performed during the deposit process to avoid or minimize any waiting time for the shipping agent at the end of the deposit to transfer the event from the compartment cluster to the mobile device, and to avoid early departure of the shipping agent before the transfer of the event is completed. These events stored in different compartments are consolidated into a deposit event report that reflects the deposit performed by the mobile device with the shipping agent. This deposit event report also consolidates events that reflect additional actions performed by the shipping agent with the mobile device. Once the deposit process is complete or the freight forwarder indicates via the mobile device 102 interface that he or she wishes to stop the deposit process, communication between the mobile device and the modern compartment cluster is terminated. As soon as communication between the mobile device 102 and the remote shipping system 106 is established, if this communication is terminated, the mobile device sends a deposit event report to the remote shipping system (step 326) that consolidates all events collected from the parcel locker's locking module and events reflecting additional actions performed with the mobile device by the freight forwarder. Once the event is received by the remote shipping system, the remote shipping system generates a notification (step 328) for each recipient of the parcel deposited at the parcel locker informing the recipient of the deposit and providing the recipient with information to retrieve the parcel. The recipient authorization code only needs to be provided to recipients who have not downloaded the MPL application, since recipients who have downloaded the MPL application can use their mobile device to retrieve their parcel. During the entire deposit process, the mobile device screen can act as a man-machine interface to inform and guide the shipping agent to operate the compartments, for example, when all compartments are used and no more deposits are possible.

[0088] 4 illustrates an embodiment of the invention for parcel retrieval by a recipient using his / her mobile device to operate a compartment. When the recipient makes a request for a package, typically via a computer system, the request is logged in the remote shipping system 106 (step 402). When the recipient selects to have the package delivered in the parcel locker 100, the remote shipping system may inform the recipient that an MPL application should be downloaded onto the recipient mobile device 102 if such an MPL application is not already downloaded onto the recipient's mobile device. If agreed to by the recipient, the remote shipping system may download the MPL application onto the recipient mobile device, or, in the case of many standard operating systems for mobile devices, the recipient may be requested and guided to use an associated application store, e.g., apps store™ or Google play™, to download the MPL application onto his / her mobile device (step 404).

[0089] After the package, i.e., the parcel, is deposited in the compartment 112j of the parcel locker, the remote shipping system sends at least one notification to the recipient in the form of an e-mail or SMS to inform the recipient of the parcel deposit and the location of the parcel locker and to include the parcel identification (step 406). If the recipient has not downloaded the MPL Application, the notification includes the authorization code the recipient needs to enter to open the compartment and the compartment identifier corresponding to the physical identifier attached to the visible part of the compartment, so that the recipient can identify the compartment in which his or her parcel is deposited. The notification may also suggest downloading the MPL Application, for example, via a Uniform Resource Locator (URL). If the recipient has the MPL Application installed, the notification simply reminds the recipient that they should use the MPL Application to open the compartment. In step 408, in a preferred embodiment, the receipt of an authenticator for parcel retrieval by the MPL Application is initiated during the notification process. The notification received on the mobile device may include a function, e.g., a URL, ultimately in the form of a button, designed to transfer the authenticator to the MPL application. When the recipient activates the function, e.g., by touching an area of the mobile phone display that represents the function, a navigator installed on the mobile phone is launched to access a web application hosted on a remote shipping server, and the parcel identification associated with the notification is sent to the web application. The web application remotely launches the MPL application, which requests the authenticator from the remote shipping system for retrieval of the parcel.Based on the parcel identification, the remote shipping system can identify the corresponding parcel locker and parcel compartment to generate a preferably unique authenticator, which is uniquely associated with the compartment cluster where the parcel is deposited and can be used by the mobile phone to establish communication with the compartment cluster. This particular notification procedure, using the functionality, referring to the web application, allows for the separation of the management of the recipient, for example handled by the carrier organization, from the management of the parcel locker, for example handled by a service company that may not know specifically about the recipient. The generated authenticator includes or is sent with the unique cluster identification 134i obtained from the PL configuration stored in the database system 130 of the remote shipping system, and also includes the user certificate and a privilege mask generated by the remote shipping system based on the category of the user identified as the recipient. The remote shipping system returns the authenticator to the MPL application, where it is stored for future retrieval of the parcel. If several parcels are due to be retrieved by the recipient, the remote shipping system generates and returns for each parcel a preferably unique authenticator that includes or is sent along with the unique cluster identification. Alternatively, for an integrated system, the data including the authenticator is encapsulated within the feature, preferably in encrypted form, and when the recipient activates the feature, the data is transferred to the MPL application. In this case, the authenticator and privilege mask are pre-generated by the remote shipping system, and the recipient data and the parcel locker data are jointly managed in an integrated manner.

[0090] When the recipient arrives near the parcel locker, he or she starts the MPL application on his or her mobile device 102, and if short-range communication is not already activated, short-range communication is automatically turned on (step 410). If an authenticator has not been received by the mobile phone for parcel retrieval, the MPL application may provide the recipient's credentials, preferably the recipient's mobile device phone number, to the remote shipping system and request an authenticator for establishing communication with the locking module 120i of the compartment cluster where the recipient's parcel is deposited. Based on the recipient's credentials, the remote shipping system may identify the corresponding parcel and compartment cluster to generate and return an authenticator that is uniquely associated with the compartment cluster and can be used by the mobile phone to establish communication with the compartment cluster. The authenticator includes or is sent with a unique cluster identification 134i obtained from a PL configuration stored in the database system 130 of the remote shipping system, and also includes a privilege mask generated by the remote shipping system based on the user credentials and on the user category.

[0091] In step 412, the mobile device starts to capture broadcast short messages from the compartment clusters of the parcel locker. Each broadcast short message includes a unique cluster identification 250 that identifies the corresponding compartment cluster. For each received broadcast short message, the MPL application checks for a match between the unique cluster identification 134i received from the remote shipping system (or at least one of the unique cluster identifications, if several parcels are due to be retrieved by the recipient) and the unique cluster identification 250 received from the compartment cluster to identify which compartment cluster contains the recipient's parcel. As soon as the mobile device gets a match for a particular compartment cluster, it sends a response message to the compartment cluster to establish communication, so that the response message can be captured within the limited listening time window of the locking module. The response includes an authenticator corresponding to the compartment cluster, given by the remote shipping server. Once the response message is received by the locking module, the locking module is fully started and authentication is performed according to the short-range wireless protocol. As part of the authorization process by which the locking module authorizes the mobile device to establish communications, the locking module validates the received authenticator and examines the unique cluster identification contained in or sent with the authenticator, step 414. Once communications between the locking module and the mobile device are established, the locking module ceases broadcasting the short message.

[0092] In step 416, the mobile device sends a request to unlock the compartment door, i.e., a request including an authenticator. After verifying the requested action based on the privilege mask included in the authenticator, the locking module unlocks the compartment door based on the compartment index included in the authenticator. The locking module may activate a visual indicator, such as an LED, to indicate which door should be opened to deposit the parcel if the door mechanism is not provided for automatic opening. In step 418, the recipient removes his / her parcel from the compartment and closes the door, an event that is detected by the sensor 222n and stored in the compartment cluster locking module's event table 255, and the locking module locks the compartment door. During the removal process, the compartment cluster's locking module stores the event in the event table 255, preferably immediately following the occurrence of the event in the compartment. Following confirmation of the door locking by the locking module to the mobile device, the mobile device requests the event stored in the locking module's non-volatile memory 240 for transfer to the remote shipping server. To secure the transfer of information via an untrusted mobile device, the locking module may encrypt the event before transferring it to the mobile device. After the event is transferred, communication between the mobile and the compartment cluster is disconnected and the locking module of the compartment cluster resumes broadcasting the short message (step 420).

[0093] The events forwarded from the locking module are consolidated by the mobile device into events reflecting additional actions performed with the mobile device by the recipient and a retrieval event report reflecting retrievals performed by the recipient. As soon as communication between the mobile device 102 and the remote shipping system 106 is established if this communication is lost, the mobile device sends a retrieval event report to the remote shipping system (step 424). If the recipient has to retrieve other parcels corresponding to other authenticators temporarily stored by the MPL application, the mobile application returns to step 412 and resumes listening to the broadcast short message. If additional parcels for the recipient are deposited in this particular parcel locker, the following steps occur: During the retrieval process, the mobile device screen may act as a man-machine interface to inform and guide the recipient to operate the compartments. In particular, the MPL application may be configured to indicate the parcels that are due to be retrieved by the recipient, including the location and compartment identifiers.

[0094] In a particular embodiment of the invention, a mobile device may be provided locally next to the parcel locker. This local mobile device may be used by any user to operate the parcel locker. The local mobile device may be used, in particular, by any parcel recipient without any smartphone or any freight forwarder with a non-functional mobile device. The local mobile device may also be used by carrier organizations that may not want to integrate the MPL application, either temporarily or permanently, into the mobile device they use to deliver parcels. The MPL application is ultimately installed on the local mobile device by download from a remote server at the time of field installation of the parcel locker and instantiated according to user category when a user logs on to the local mobile device. The local mobile device may be operated in parallel with the network of mobile devices, as described above, or may simply replace the network of mobile devices for some applications. In one embodiment, the local mobile device is fixedly mounted on a pedestal next to the parcel locker or on a bracket attached to the side next to the parcel locker or directly to the compartment cluster of the parcel locker. The local mobile device may be powered in an autonomous manner similar to the locking module. For some applications, the local mobile device may be connected to a local electrical network when enabled, but the compartment cluster remains autonomous for easy installation of parcel lockers, easy replacement of compartments, or easy upgrade or change of parcel locker configuration in the field. Ultimately, the local mobile device may operate several parcel lockers located in the same area. In a preferred embodiment, the local mobile device may be integrated into existing parcel lockers supporting short-range communication capabilities.

[0095] The parcel locker system and method of the present invention described above comprises a parcel locker consisting of an assembled autonomous compartment cluster. However, it will be readily understood by those skilled in the art that in another embodiment of the present invention, a single compartment cluster may be used alone, unassembled, as part of a parcel locker in a standalone configuration, or a single compartment, i.e., a single compartment cluster with a single compartment, may be used alone in a standalone configuration. Such a single standalone compartment cluster or a single standalone compartment may be used for home delivery or for a single point delivery system. It will also be readily understood by those skilled in the art that in another embodiment of the present invention, the compartment clusters may be reduced to single compartments with their own locking modules and assembled as part of a parcel locker. Such an architecture does not benefit from the cost savings of using a single locking module for several compartments assembled into a cluster, but provides a more modular and more flexible solution.
