[0027] Detailed Description of the Invention definition Before describing the present subject matter in detail, it may be useful to provide definitions of certain terms to be used herein. Unless otherwise specified, all technical and scientific terms used herein have the same meaning as commonly understood by one of ordinary skill in the art to which the present subject matter pertains. For the sake of clarity, the following definitions are provided:
[0028] The terms "a" or "an" as used herein include singular and plural unless specifically stated otherwise. Thus, the terms "a," "an," or "at least one" may be used interchangeably in this application.
[0029] As used herein, the term "about" when used in conjunction with a numerical value includes ±10% from the recited value. Moreover, all ranges directed to the same component or property herein are inclusive of the endpoints, are independently combinable, and all ranges are inclusive of the endpoints. It is understood that when a parameter range is given, all integers and tenths thereof within that range are also provided by the present invention.
[0030] As used herein, the term "effective", when used, refers to a reaction time of less than 24 hours.
[0031] As used herein, the term "mixture" or "combination" refers to a combination in any physical form, such as, but not limited to, a blend, solution, alloy, and the like.
[0032] The term "heterocyclic aromatic ring" refers to thiophene, thiazole and thiadiazole.
[0033] The term "optionally substituted" refers to H and halogen.
[0034] The present invention is based on the inventors' surprising discovery that the catalytic oxidation of the compound 5-chloro-2-[(3,4,4-trifluoro-3-buten-1-yl)thio]-thiazole at low temperatures for the synthesis of the compound fluensulfone provides an efficient process with high selectivity, conversion and yield.
[0035] The present invention is advantageous in that it is highly effective. In particular, the process disclosed herein provides a highly selective reaction, exhibiting high conversions, higher yields, reduced production costs and simplified work-up. The present invention is also advantageous in that it is atom efficient and it minimizes the amount of salt waste it generates.
[0036] In the process for the oxidation of sulfides to the corresponding sulfones depicted by Scheme 1, the intermediate sulfoxide (II') is readily generated, however the secondary oxidation to the sulfone is usually relatively slow and requires elevated temperatures.
[0037] [ka]
[0038] Such oxidation methods generally lead to the undesired oxidation of the double bond of the highly reactive halogenated butenyl group of fluensulfone and its oxidative decomposition, resulting in low selectivity of the reaction and, as a result, low yields.
[0039] Scheme 2 shows some examples of such oxidative decomposition and subsequent formation of by-products.

[0096] Experimental part EXAMPLES
[0097] 20.2 g of 5-chloro-2-[(3,4,4-trifluoro-3-buten-1-yl)thio]-thiazole (96.8%, 74.55 mmol) and 100 g of methanol were added to a 1 L flask equipped with a mechanical stirrer, a condenser, a thermometer and a dropping funnel. A solution of 1.7 g of Na2WO4*2H2O (5.10 mmol) in 14 mL of water was added to the reaction mixture and the reaction mixture was cooled to 10°C.
[0098] The reaction was stirred at 8-10° C. while 21.0 g of H2O2 (50% in water, 17.5 mL, 308.73 mmol) was added slowly over 6 hours. After complete addition of H2O2, the reaction was stirred for an additional 1 to 4 hours at 8-10° C. Samples were taken for analysis (LC) at the end of the feed and periodically until the sulfoxide (Formula II') was <1% by normalization.
[0099] After the reaction was complete, the reaction mixture was cooled to 5° C. and Na2S2O5 was added slowly while maintaining the temperature at 5-20° C. until the peroxide test was negative. Methanol was removed by vacuum distillation and 40 mL of water was added.
[0100] The pH was slowly corrected to 6-7 using 15% NaOH solution and the reaction mixture was stirred for an additional 15 min.
[0101] 120 g of methylcyclohexane was added, heated to 70° C. and the phases were separated hot. The organic phase was washed with 100 g of water at 70° C. and the phases were separated hot.
[0102] Crystallization was carried out gradually from 70° C. to 0° C. and the reaction mixture was filtered at 0° C. The cake was dried on a sinter and later in vacuum (10 mbar at 25° C.).
[0103] After drying, 85-91% yield of fluensulfone was obtained (assay >97%).
[0104] Discussion The oxidation of sulfides in the presence of alkene groups is challenging and improving the selectivity affects yield and effectiveness. Catalytic oxidation at low temperatures has been found to be effective and gives high selectivity. [Brief description of the drawings]
