Description

[Technical field]

[0001] The present invention relates to hair conditioner compositions, and more particularly to hair conditioner compositions comprising sodium benzoate and a surfactant system comprising glycol and / or glyceryl esters. [Background technology]

[0002] A variety of approaches have been developed for conditioning hair, ranging from hair conditioners (both leave-in and rinse-out products) that are applied after shampooing, to hair conditioning shampoos that attempt to both cleanse and condition the hair with a single product.

[0003] While some consumers prefer the ease and convenience of shampooing with conditioner, a significant number of consumers prefer more conventional conditioner formulations that are applied to the hair as a separate step from shampooing (usually after shampooing).Conditioner formulations can be in the form of rinse-free or no-rinse products, but can also be in the form of emulsions, creams, gels, sprays, and mousses.Consumers who prefer conventional conditioner formulations value relatively high conditioning benefits or the convenience of varying the amount of conditioning depending on the condition or volume of the hair.

[0004] It is known that conditioning compositions, like most cosmetic products, contain preservatives to prevent product spoilage by microorganisms. Preservatives can help keep the product stable throughout its lifespan, including during product shipping, handling, and storage, and while the consumer is using the product. During use, consumers can inadvertently and unintentionally introduce microorganisms when opening and closing water-based products, and these microorganisms can grow in the warm, moist environment of a shower room. Therefore, cosmetics generally contain preservative systems. Common preservatives in conditioner products can include isothiazolinones, parabens, benzyl alcohol, phenoxyethanol, and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), as well as their salts.

[0005] However, some consumers desire cosmetic products with preservative systems that are EWG VERIFIED™ marked, do not contain any ingredients listed as "unacceptable" by Whole Foods®, and are classified as "no risk" (assigned a green dot) by the Yuka® app. Modifying preservative systems to reduce or eliminate certain preservatives can adversely affect microbiological safety requirements. Summary of the Invention [Problem to be solved by the invention]

[0006] Therefore, there is a need for a conditioner composition having an effective preservative system that is EWG VERIFIED™ marked, does not contain any ingredients listed as "unacceptable" by Whole Foods®, and is classified as "no risk" by the Yuka® app. [Means for solving the problem]

[Brief description of the drawings]

[0010] While the specification concludes with claims which particularly point out and distinctly claim the subject matter of the invention, it is believed the present invention can be more readily understood from the following description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, in which: [Figure 1] FIG. 1 is a photograph of the conditioner composition of Comparative Example 10, which contains 1% by weight of sodium benzoate and has a clumpy, grainy appearance. [Diagram 2] FIG. 1 is a photograph of the conditioner composition of Comparative Example 11, which contains 2% by weight of sodium benzoate and has a thin, granular appearance. [Diagram 3] 1 is a photograph of the conditioner composition of Example 1, containing 0.20% by weight sodium benzoate and 0.40% by weight caprylyl glycol. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS

[0011] While the specification concludes with claims which particularly point out and distinctly claim the invention, it is believed the present invention will be better understood from the following description.

[0012] Hair conditioners are used to improve the feel, appearance, and manageability of hair. Hair conditioning compositions generally include a cationic surfactant, a high melting point fatty compound having a melting point above 25°C, and in some cases 40-85°C, and an aqueous carrier. The conditioning composition also includes a safe and effective preservative system to prevent the growth of microorganisms under normal storage and use conditions. Common preservatives in conditioner products include isothiazolinones (e.g., methylisothiazolinone and mixtures of methylisothiazolinone and methylchloroisothiazolinone, available from Dow® as Kathon™), parabens (e.g., Germaben®, methylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben, and phenoxyethanol, available from Ashland™ as Optifen™ and Optifen™ Plus), benzyl alcohol, and phenoxyethanol. Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) and its salts, including, for example, disodium EDTA, calcium disodium EDTA, and tetrasodium EDTA, are also often used in hair care compositions as chelating agents that can improve product performance and stability.

[0013] However, there is an increasing demand from some consumers for conditioner products and / or preservative systems that meet at least one, two, or all three of the following criteria: Earning the EWG VERIFIED™ mark (as of November 25, 2019), which means meeting the Environmental Working Group's (EWG) standards, including avoiding EWG ingredients of concern, providing truthful labeling, and using good manufacturing practices, in addition to EWG's licensing criteria and other standards found in Personal Care Products (2019). Does not contain any of the ingredients listed by Whole Foods® as unacceptable in its Premium Body Care Unacceptable Ingredients (as of July 2018). - Classified as "no risk" (a green dot) by the Yuka® app (as of March 2019).

[0014] However, it may be difficult to replace traditional preservatives with preservatives that meet the standards listed above while maintaining antimicrobial efficacy and product performance. Tables 1 and 2 below include examples with sodium benzoate preservative (that meets the standards). However, when the conditioner composition had a smooth, creamy consistency, the concentration of sodium benzoate was too low to effectively inhibit microbial growth. When the concentration of sodium benzoate was increased, the conditioner composition became too thin to be easily applied by the user's hand, which may greatly affect product performance and usage experience. As shown in Table 3 and described in the associated text, a preservative system that includes sodium benzoate and glycols such as caprylyl glycol or glyceryl esters such as (caprylic / capric) glyceryl and glyceryl caprylate (and) glyceryl undecylenate can be effective when each component is added at the correct concentration.

[0015] A preservative system containing sodium benzoate and a second composition selected from the group consisting of glycols, glyceryl esters, and combinations thereof, all of whose ingredients have an EWG rating score of 3 or less or can be marked with EWG VERIFIED™, is not permitted to contain any ingredients listed as "unacceptable" by Whole Foods® Market, and can be classified as "risk-free" by the Yuka® app, has been found to maintain antimicrobial efficacy and provide good conditioning. In some examples, the preservative system and / or conditioner can also meet COSMOS standards (as of January 1, 2019). A conditioner composition containing this preservative system has an effective preservative system that can have a uniform, smooth, creamy appearance as described herein, and has undetectable levels of microorganisms (both bacteria and fungi) as determined by bacterial and fungal microbial susceptibility testing methods (showing a reduction of more than 99.99%).

[0016] The second composition may contain glycols and / or glyceryl esters. Both glycols and glyceryl esters have two -OH groups on the molecule. Examples of glycols may include, but are not limited to, butylene glycol, pentylene glycol, hexylene glycol, 1,2-hexanediol, caprylyl glycol, decylene glycol (1,2-decanediol), and mixtures thereof. In one example, the glycol may be caprylyl glycol. Examples of glycerol esters may include, but are not limited to, glyceryl caprylate, glyceryl caprate, glyceryl undecylenate, and combinations thereof.

[0017] The conditioner composition and / or preservative system may be free or substantially free of certain preservatives, particularly those that do not meet one or more of the above standards, such as isothiazolinones, such as 5-chloro-2-methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one and 2-methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one (available commercially as Kathon™ CG from Dow®), as well as benzyl alcohol, phenoxyethanol, cyclohexylglycerin, and / or parabens. The conditioner composition may be free or substantially free of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) and its salts.

[0018] Some consumers prefer that the conditioner composition meet the standards of cationic surfactants and preservative systems, as well as be free or substantially free of silicones, propellants, phthalates, parabens, isothiazolinones (e.g., Kathon™), phenoxyethanol, dyes, sulfates, and / or formaldehyde donors. The conditioner composition may also be free of animal-derived ingredients.

[0022] The conditioner composition may contain from about 0.3% to about 1.5% by weight, alternatively from about 0.32% to about 1% by weight, alternatively from about 0.33% to about 0.8% by weight, alternatively from about 0.34% to about 0.6% by weight, alternatively from about 0.35% to about 0.5% by weight, alternatively from about 0.37% to about 0.45% by weight, alternatively from about 0.38% to about 0.43% by weight of the second composition. If the conditioner composition contains too much glycol and / or glyceryl ester, the gel network structure may be destroyed and the conditioner will not have consumer acceptable rheology and / or performance.

[0023] The preservative system may contain from about 50% to about 80% of the preservative system, alternatively from about 50% to about 75% by weight of the preservative system, alternatively from about 50% to about 70% by weight of the preservative system, alternatively from about 50% to about 67% by weight of the preservative system, of the second composition.

[0024] The weight ratio of sodium benzoate to the second composition may be from about 1:4 to about 1:1, alternatively from about 1:3 to about 1:1, alternatively from about 1:2 to about 1:1, alternatively from about 1:1.7 to about 1:1.

[0025] The conditioner composition may have a shear stress of from about 50 Pa to about 500 Pa, alternatively from about 75 Pa to about 450 Pa, from about 100 Pa to about 400 Pa, from about 125 Pa to about 375 Pa, from about 130 Pa to about 350 Pa, and from about 135 Pa to about 325 Pa. [0039] In some examples, the conditioner composition may be substantially free or free of cationic surfactants having quaternized ammonium salts.

[0040] Mono long chain alkylamine Mono-long chain alkylamines may alternatively include those having one long alkyl chain of 19-30 carbon atoms, alternatively 19-24 carbon atoms, alternatively 20-24 carbon atoms, alternatively 20-22 alkyl groups. Mono-long chain alkylamines also include mono-long chain alkyl amidoamines. Primary, secondary, and tertiary aliphatic amines can be used.

[0041] Tertiary amidoamines having an alkyl group having about 19 to about 22 carbons can be used. Exemplary tertiary amidoamines include behenamidopropyl dimethylamine, behenamidopropyl diethylamine, behenamidoethyl diethylamine, behenamidoethyl dimethylamine, brassicamidopropyl dimethylamine, brassicamidopropyl diethylamine, brassicamidoethyl diethylamine, and brassicamidoethyl dimethylamine. Amines in the present invention are disclosed in U.S. Patent No. 4,275,055 (Nachtigal et al.).

[0044] In some examples, the conditioner composition may be free of mono-long chain alkyl quaternized ammonium salts.

[0045] Di-long chain alkyl quaternary ammonium salt When a di-long alkyl quaternized ammonium salt is used, the di-long alkyl quaternized ammonium salt may alternatively be combined with a mono-long alkyl quaternized ammonium salt and / or a mono-long alkyl amine salt in a weight ratio of 1:1 to 1:5, alternatively 1:1.2 to 1:5, alternatively 1:1.5 to 1:4, from the viewpoint of the stability of the rheological effect and the conditioning effect.

[0046] The di-long chain alkyl quaternized ammonium salts can have two long alkyl chains of 12 to 30 carbon atoms, alternatively 16 to 24 carbon atoms, alternatively 18 to 22 carbon atoms. Such di-long chain alkyl quaternized ammonium salts have the formula (I):

[0047] [ka] (In the formula, R 71 , R 72 , R 73 , and R 74 two of R are selected from aliphatic groups having 12 to 30 carbon atoms, alternatively 16 to 24 carbon atoms, alternatively 18 to 22 carbon atoms, or aromatic groups having up to about 30 carbon atoms, alkoxy groups, polyoxyalkylene groups, alkylamido groups, hydroxyalkyl groups, aryl groups, or alkylaryl groups; R 71 , R 72 , R 73 , and R 74 the remainder are independently selected from an aliphatic group of 1 to about 8 carbon atoms, alternatively 1 to 3 carbon atoms, or an aromatic group having up to about 8 carbon atoms, an alkoxy group, a polyoxyalkylene group, an alkylamido group, a hydroxyalkyl group, an aryl group, or an alkylaryl group; and X - may have a salt-forming anion selected from the group consisting of halides (e.g., chloride and bromide), C1-C4 alkyl sulfates (e.g., methosulfate and ethosulfate), and mixtures thereof. The aliphatic groups may contain, in addition to carbon and hydrogen atoms, ether linkages, and other groups such as amino groups. Longer chain aliphatic groups, e.g., those having about 16 carbon atoms or more, may be saturated or unsaturated. Alternatively, R 71 , R 72 , R 73 , and R 74 two of R are selected from alkyl groups having 12 to 30 carbon atoms, alternatively 16 to 24 carbon atoms, alternatively 18 to 22 carbon atoms; 71 , R 72 , R 73 , and R 74 the remainder are independently selected from CH3, C2H5, C2H4OH, CH2C6H5, and mixtures thereof.

[0050] The high melting point fatty compound may have a melting point of 25°C or more, alternatively 40°C or more, alternatively 45°C or more, alternatively 47°C or more, alternatively 49°C or more, from the viewpoint of the stability of the emulsion, especially the gel network. Alternatively, such melting point is up to about 90°C, alternatively up to about 80°C, alternatively up to about 75°C, or even alternatively up to about 71°C, from the viewpoint of easier preparation and easier emulsification. In the present invention, the high melting point fatty compound may be used as a single compound or as a blend or mixture of at least two high melting point fatty compounds. When used as such a blend or mixture, the above melting point refers to the melting point of the blend or mixture.

[0051] High melting point fatty compounds can be selected from the group consisting of fatty alcohols, fatty acids, and mixtures thereof.Furthermore, those skilled in the art understand that, depending on the number and position of double bonds and the length and position of branching, certain compounds with certain essential carbon atoms may have melting points lower than the melting points preferred in the present invention above.Such compounds with low melting points are not intended to be included in this section.Non-limiting examples of high melting point compounds can be found in International Cosmetic Ingredient Dictionary, Fifth Edition, 1993, and CTFA Cosmetic Ingredient Handbook, Second Edition, 1992.

[0052] Of the various high melting point fatty compounds, fatty alcohols are alternatively used in the compositions of the present invention. The fatty alcohols may have from about 14 to about 30 carbon atoms, or alternatively from about 16 to about 22 carbon atoms. These fatty alcohols are saturated and may be straight-chain or branched-chain alcohols.

[0053] Fatty alcohols include, for example, cetyl alcohol (having a melting point of about 56°C), stearyl alcohol (having a melting point of about 58-59°C), behenyl alcohol (having a melting point of about 71°C), and mixtures thereof. These compounds are known to have the above melting points. However, they often have lower melting points when supplied, because such supplied products are often mixtures of fatty alcohols with an alkyl chain length distribution in which the predominant alkyl chain is cetyl, stearyl, brassica, or behenyl.

[0054] The fatty alcohol may be a mixture of cetyl alcohol and stearyl alcohol.

[0055] Generally, in the mixture, the weight ratio of cetyl alcohol to stearyl alcohol is alternatively from about 1:9 to 9:1, alternatively from about 1:4 to about 4:1, alternatively from about 1:2.3 to about 1.5:1.

[0056] When cationic surfactant and high melting point fatty compound are used in higher concentrations, the weight ratio of cetyl alcohol to stearyl alcohol in the mixture is alternatively about 1:1 to about 4:1, or about 1:1 to about 2:1, or about 1.2:1 to about 2:1, in order to avoid too thick a mixture for spreadability. This weight ratio can also provide better conditioning of damaged areas of the hair.

[0057] Aqueous Carrier The compositions of the present invention may include an aqueous carrier, the concentration and type of which may be selected according to compatibility with other ingredients and other desired properties of the product.

[0058] Carriers may include water and aqueous solutions of lower alkyl alcohols, which may be monohydric alcohols having 1 to 6 carbons, or ethanol and / or isopropanol.

[0059] Alternatively, the aqueous carrier is substantially water. Alternatively, deionized water is used. Water from natural sources containing mineral cations can also be used depending on the desired properties of the product. Generally, the compositions of the present invention contain about 40% to about 99%, alternatively about 50% to about 95%, alternatively about 70% to about 93%, alternatively about 80% to about 92% water.

[0060] Gel Network The gel network composition can be included in the conditioner composition to provide conditioning benefits, such as improved wet feel of hair after rinsing the conditioner. As used herein, the term "gel network" refers to a lamellar or vesicular solid comprising at least one high melting point fatty compound, such as fatty alcohol, as specified below, at least one surfactant, in particular a cationic surfactant, as specified below, and water or other suitable solvent. The lamellar or vesicular phase comprises two layers, a first layer comprising a high melting point fatty compound and a surfactant, alternating with a second layer comprising water or other suitable solvent. Gel networks in general are further described in GMEccleston, "Functions of Mixed Emulsifiers and Emulsifying Waxes in Dermatological Lotions and Creams", Colloids and Surfaces A: Physiochem. and Eng. Aspects 123-124 (1997) 169-182, and G. M. Eccleston, "The Microstructure of Semisolid Creams", Pharmacy International, Vol. 7, 63-70 (1986).

[0061] The gel network may be formed by a cationic surfactant, a high melting point fatty compound, and an aqueous carrier, and is suitable for providing various conditioning benefits, such as a slippery feel during application to wet hair, and a soft and moist feel on dry hair.

[0062] Alternatively, when forming a gel network, the cationic surfactant and high melting point fatty compound are included at a concentration such that the weight ratio of cationic surfactant to high melting point fatty compound alternatively ranges from about 1:1 to about 1:10, alternatively from about 1:1.5 to about 1:7, alternatively from about 1:2 to about 1:6, in terms of providing improved wet conditioning benefits.

[0063] Alternatively, when the gel network is formed, the composition of the present invention is substantially free of anionic surfactants from the viewpoint of gel network stability. In the present invention, "composition substantially free of anionic surfactants" means that the composition does not contain anionic surfactants, or, if the composition contains anionic surfactants, the concentration of such anionic surfactants is very low. In the present invention, if such anionic surfactants are contained, their total concentration can alternatively be 1% or less by weight of the composition, alternatively 0.5% or less by weight, alternatively 0.1% or less by weight. Most alternatively, the total concentration of such anionic surfactants is 0% by weight of the composition.

[0064] Additional Ingredients The compositions of the present invention may contain other additional ingredients, which may be selected by one of skill in the art depending on the desired properties of the final product, and which are suitable for making the composition more cosmetically or aesthetically acceptable or for providing additional use benefits to the composition. Such other additional components are generally used individually at levels of from about 0.001% to about 10%, or up to 5%, by weight of the composition.

[0065] A wide variety of other additional ingredients can be incorporated into the compositions of the present invention. These include other conditioning agents such as aloe vera gel; aloe vera leaf juice; Ecklonia radiata extract; natural oils and waxes (e.g., shea butter, safflower oil, cocoa butter, orange peel wax, olive oil, macadamia seed oil, evening primrose oil, crambe abyssinica seed oil, argan oil, camelina oil, sunflower oil, almond oil, Argania spinosa kernel oil, grapeseed oil, jojoba oil, coconut oil, meadowfoam oil, neem oil, linseed oil, castor oil, soybean oil, sesame oil, beeswax, sunflower seed wax, candelilla wax, rice bran wax, carnauba wax, white bayberry wax, and soy wax); essential oils (e.g., lime peel oil, lavender oil, peppermint oil, cedarwood oil, tea tree oil, ylang ylang oil, and common sage oil, which can be used in fragrances); hydrolyzed collagen under the trade name "Emix-d" available from Eisai, vitamin E under the trade name "Emix-d" available from Roche, panthenol available from Roche, pantothenyl ethyl ether available from Roche, hydrolyzed keratin, proteins, plant extracts, and nutrients; pH adjusters (e.g., citric acid, sodium citrate, succinic acid, phosphoric acid, sodium hydroxide, sodium carbonate, and the like), general salts (e.g., potassium acetate and sodium chloride, and the like); colorants (e.g., any of the FD&C or D&C dyes); fragrances; sequestrants (e.g., disodium ethylenediaminetetraacetate, and the like); ultraviolet and infrared screening and absorbing agents (e.g., octyl salicylate); antioxidants (e.g., rosemary, tocopherol, vitamin E, vitamin A, tea extract, and hydroxyacetophenone (available from Symrise® as Symsave® H); amino acids (e.g., histidine, L-arginine, and the like).

[0066] Test Method Bacterial Microorganism Susceptibility Testing Methods Bacterial microbial susceptibility testing is used to evaluate the antibacterial efficacy of preservative systems in rinse-off cosmetic conditioners.

[0067] The bacterial pool of challenge organisms used in the test (a mixture of equal volumes) is composed of standardized solutions of the following bacterial strains: Escherichia coli (ATCC#8739), Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC#6538), and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC#9027), Burkholderia cepacia (ATCC#25416), as well as strains of Klebsiella pneumoniae, Enterobacter gergoviae, and Serratia marcescens isolated from cosmetic products. The bacterial pool is prepared to have a concentration of approximately 6-8 log cfu / mL. To start the test, 0.1 mL of the bacterial pool is added to 10.0 g of test conditioner. The test conditioner is then incubated at 20-25°C for 2 days. After incubation, 1.0 g product aliquots are neutralized using Modified Letheen Broth (commercially available as Tween® 80 from Croda™) containing 1.5% polysorbate 80, with 1% lecithin used to aid in microbial recovery / counting. Multiple dilutions of this sample are then transferred to petri dishes containing Modified Leteen Agar with 1.5% Tween® 80, and the agar plates are incubated at 30-35°C for at least 2 days. The bacterial colony forming units (cfu) are then counted, and the log reduction in bacterial numbers from the starting log cfu / g load level is reported.

[0068] A reduction of 1 log cfu / g equates to approximately 90% bacterial reduction. A reduction of 2 log cfu / g equates to approximately 99% bacterial reduction. A reduction of 3 log cfu / g equates to approximately 99.9% bacterial reduction. A reduction of 4 log cfu / g equates to approximately 99.99% bacterial reduction. Larger reductions in log cfu / g values indicate robust antimicrobial properties from the preservative system.

[0069] Fungal Microorganism Susceptibility Testing Methods: Fungal microbial susceptibility testing is used to evaluate the antifungal efficacy of preservative systems in rinse-off cosmetic conditioners.

[0070] A standardized ATCC strain of yeast Candida albicans (ATCC#10231) and filamentous fungus Aspergillus brasiliensis (frm. niger) (ATCC#16404) are mixed in a 1:1 (v:v) ratio and used as the inoculum during the test. The concentration of the fungal pool is approximately 6-8 log cfu / mL. To start the test, 0.1 mL of the fungal pool is added to 10.0 g of test conditioner. After incubating the inoculated sample for 2 days at 20-25°C, a 1.0 g aliquot of the product is neutralized using Modified Leteen Broth containing 1.5% Tween® 80 and 1% lecithin to aid in microbial recovery / counting. Multiple dilutions of this sample are then transferred to Petri dishes containing modified Leteen Agar with 1.5% Tween 80, and the agar plates are incubated at 20-25°C for at least 5 days, at which point the fungal colony forming units (cfu) are counted and the log reduction in fungal numbers from the starting log cfu / g load level is calculated.

[0071] A reduction of 1 log cfu / g equates to approximately 90% fungal reduction. A reduction of 2 log cfu / g equates to approximately 99% fungal reduction. A reduction of 3 log cfu / g equates to approximately 99.9% fungal reduction. A reduction of 4 log cfu / g equates to approximately 99.99% fungal reduction. Larger reductions in log cfu / g values indicate robust antifungal properties from the preservative system.

[0072] Shear stress The shear stress is measured for each shear rate sweep condition using a rheometer available from TA Instruments under the mode designation ARG2. The geometry has a diameter of 40 mm, a cone angle of 2°C, and a gap of 49 μm. The shear rate is increased logarithmically from 0 to 1200 / s in 1 min and the temperature is maintained at 26.7°C. The shear stress is determined at a high shear rate of 950 / s and is defined as above.

[0073] pH measurement method First, calibrate the Mettler Toledo Seven Compact pH meter. This is done by turning on the pH meter and waiting 30 seconds. Then, remove the electrode from the storage solution, rinse the electrode with distilled water, and carefully wipe the electrode with a scientific cleaning wipe, such as Kimwipe®. Immerse the electrode in a pH 4 buffer solution and press the calibrate button. Wait until the pH icon stops flashing and press the calibrate button again. Rinse the electrode with distilled water and carefully wipe the electrode with a scientific cleaning wipe. Then, immerse the electrode in a pH 7 buffer solution and press the calibrate button again. Wait until the pH icon stops flashing and press the calibrate button again. Rinse the electrode with distilled water and carefully wipe the electrode with a scientific cleaning wipe. Then, immerse the electrode in a pH 10 buffer and press the calibrate button again. Wait until the pH icon stops flashing and press the measure button. Rinse the electrode with distilled water and carefully wipe the electrode with a scientific cleaning wipe.

[0074] Immerse the electrode in the test sample and press the read button. Wait until the pH icon stops flashing and record the value. EXAMPLES

[0075] The following are non-limiting examples of the conditioner compositions described herein. It will be understood that other modifications of the present invention within the skill of those skilled in the art can be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the present invention.

[0076] All parts, percentages, and ratios herein are by weight unless otherwise specified. Some ingredients may be supplied as dilute solutions by the supplier. Amounts stated represent the weight % of added material unless otherwise specified.

[0077] The examples in Tables 1-3 below were made as follows: Sodium benzoate and L-glutamic acid were dissolved in water. The mixture was heated to 80°C. A cationic surfactant and a fatty alcohol were then added to the mixture. The mixture was then cooled while the cationic surfactant and fatty alcohol continued to dissolve. A glycol or glyceryl ester was then added, followed by oils and fragrances once the temperature was below 45°C. The composition was cooled to room temperature to make the conditioner composition.

[0078] In Tables 1-3 below, the microbacterial counts at 2 days and the microfungal counts at 2 days are determined by the bacterial and fungal microbial susceptibility testing methods described herein. For the preservative system to be effective, the levels of microorganisms (bacteria and fungi) must be undetectable, meaning there is a greater than 99.99% reduction in microorganisms at 2 days as determined by the bacterial and fungal microbial susceptibility testing methods. In Table 2 below, N / A indicates that testing was not performed.

[0079] [Table 1]

[0080] [Table 2]

[0081] Comparative Example 1 is a control and does not contain a preservative system. Comparative Example 1 does not provide sufficient microbial reduction of bacteria and fungi at 2 days.

[0082] Comparative Examples 2, 3, and 4 contained 0.20%, 0.25%, and 0.40% by weight sodium benzoate, and these examples had undetectable bacterial levels (greater than 99.99% reduction) at 2 days. However, preservative systems containing only sodium benzoate at these levels do not provide significant reduction in fungal counts at 2 days, as only these examples achieved approximately 90% reduction.

[0083] Comparative Examples 5 and 6 contain a preservative system with both sodium benzoate and caprylyl glycol. These examples have undetectable bacterial levels in 2 days (greater than 99.99% reduction). The combination of sodium benzoate and caprylyl glycol improves fungal reduction in 2 days compared to Comparative Examples 2, 3, and 4. However, fungal counts are still at detectable levels, and therefore the preservative system in these examples is considered ineffective.

[0084] Comparative Example 7 has a preservative system containing 0.20% by weight sodium benzoate and 0.40% by weight glyceryl caprylate / caprate (glyceryl esters), this example has undetectable levels of bacteria in 2 days (greater than 99.99% reduction), however, fungi are ineffective with greater than 90% reduction in 2 days.

[0085] Similar to Comparative Example 7, Comparative Example 8 has a preservative system with 0.20% by weight sodium benzoate and 0.40% by weight glyceryl caprylate (and) glyceryl undecylenate, this example has undetectable levels of bacteria (>99.99% reduction) in 2 days, however, fungi are ineffective with >90% reduction in 2 days.

[0086] Comparative Example 9 contains 0.20% sodium benzoate and behentrimonium chloride (a cationic surfactant) and this example has undetectable bacterial levels in 2 days (greater than 99.99% reduction), however fungal levels are detectable in 2 days (greater than 99% reduction) and therefore is not effective.

[0087] Comparative Example 10 contains 1 wt. % sodium benzoate. As shown in FIG. 1, instead of being a smooth, creamy conditioner, this example is clumpy and granular, which is not what consumers find appealing. Without wishing to be bound by theory, it is believed that the concentration of sodium benzoate in this example is too high, which, being a salt, affects the fineness of the gel network. For example, in this example, it is believed that in some areas the gel network may be too fine, resulting in a clumpy texture.

[0088] Comparative Example 11 contains 2% by weight of caprylyl glycol. Instead of being a smooth, creamy conditioner, as shown in FIG. 2, it was thin and had a noticeable crystalline appearance. A conditioner with this texture may be difficult for consumers to apply by hand and may not provide good conditioning. Without wishing to be bound by theory, it is believed that if the concentration of glycol is too high, it acts like a solvent and destroys the gel network organization.

[0089] [Table 3] 1. Sodium Benzoate, available from Kalama® 2. Caprylyl Glycol, available from Procter and Gamble® 3. Glyceryl Caprylate / Caprate (STEPAN-MILD® GCC), available from STEPAN® Corporation 4. Glyceryl caprylate (and) glyceryl undecylenate (Lexgard® Natural), available from Inolex® 5. Behentrimonium chloride / IPA (Genamin KDMP), 80% activity level, available from Clariant™ 6. Behenamidopropyldimethylamine (BAPDMA) (Incromine™ BD), available from Croda® 7. L-Glutamic Acid, available from Ajinomoto® 8. Cetyl alcohol, 95% activity level, available from Procter & Gamble® 9. Stearyl alcohol, 97% active level, available from Procter & Gamble®

[0090] All of the examples in Table 3 have an effective preservative system (i.e., no detectable bacterial or fungal counts (i.e., greater than 99.99% reduction) after 2 days) and a creamy, smooth appearance that consumers find appealing. FIG. 3 is a photograph of Example 1 showing the smooth, creamy appearance of the conditioner composition. These examples have 0.20-0.40% by weight sodium benzoate and 0.40% by weight caprylyl glycol, glyceryl caprylate / caprate, and glyceryl caprylate (and) glyceryl undecylenate. The weight ratio of sodium benzoate to caprylyl glycol, glyceryl caprylate / caprate, or glyceryl caprylate (and) glyceryl undecylenate is about 1:2 to about 1:1.

[0091] All of the examples in Table 3 have a creamy, smooth appearance that may be preferred by consumers.
