AI Technical Summary
Conventional shisha devices puncture cartridges upon insertion, leading to potential leakage, loss of freshness, and contamination of the aerosol-forming substrate, especially when not immediately used.
A shisha device is designed to prevent the puncture of cartridges until they are explicitly activated, allowing users to insert cartridges without immediate use, thereby maintaining freshness and preventing leakage until the puncture mechanism is engaged.
This solution ensures that the aerosol-forming substrate remains fresh and contained until it is needed, reducing the risk of leakage and contamination, and allowing users more flexibility in their usage.

Abstract
Description
[Technical field]
[0001] The present disclosure relates to aerosol generating devices and cartridges containing aerosol-forming substrates for use with aerosol generating devices, and more particularly to cartridge piercing associated with use of the aerosol generating devices.
[0002] A conventional shisha device is used to smoke tobacco and is configured so that the vapor and smoke pass through a basin before inhalation by the consumer. A shisha device may include one outlet or may include two or more outlets so that the device may be used by two or more consumers simultaneously. Using a shisha device is considered by some to be a recreational activity and a social experience.
[0003] Typically, traditional shisha is used in combination with a substrate, referred to in the art as water tobacco, tobacco molasses, or simply molasses. Traditional shisha substrates are relatively high in sugar (in some cases up to about 50% compared to the about 20% typically found in traditional tobacco substrates such as combustible cigarettes). The tobacco used in the shisha device may be mixed with other ingredients, for example to increase the amount of vapor and smoke produced, or to alter the flavor, or both.
[0004] Conventional shisha devices employ charcoal (such as charcoal pellets) to heat, and sometimes burn, a tobacco substrate to generate an aerosol for inhalation by the user. The use of charcoal to heat the tobacco may result in the total or partial combustion of the tobacco or other components. Additionally, the charcoal may generate harmful or potentially harmful products, such as carbon monoxide, which may mix with the shisha vapor and pass through the water basin to the outlet.
[0005] One way to reduce the production of carbon monoxide and combustion by-products is to use e-liquid rather than tobacco. Shisha devices that use e-liquid remove the combustion by-products but deprive shisha consumers of the experience that comes from traditional tobacco.
[0006] Other shisha devices have been proposed that employ electric heaters to heat but not burn the tobacco. Such electrically heated non-combustion shisha devices heat the tobacco substrate to a temperature sufficient to generate an aerosol from the substrate without burning the substrate, thus reducing or eliminating the by-products associated with tobacco combustion.
[0007] The shisha device may employ a cartridge for housing an aerosol-forming substrate. The cartridge may be filled with such an aerosol-forming substrate. The aerosol-forming substrate may include tobacco, preferably a shisha substrate, such as molasses (a mixture of tobacco, water, sugar, other ingredients such as glycerin, flavorings, etc.). A heating system in the electrically heated shisha device heats the contents of the cartridge to generate an aerosol that is conveyed to the user through an airflow path.
[0008] To facilitate airflow through the cartridge and aerosol flow from the cartridge, the shisha cartridge may have one or more holes through one or more walls. The cartridge may include one or more holes at the top, or one or more holes at the bottom, or both one or more holes at the top and one or more holes at the bottom. Alternatively, the top may be open, i.e., the top wall may be partially or completely absent. Any holes or openings in the top and bottom walls may be closed by a removable (e.g., peelable) sealing layer, such as a film, sticker, or liner, during storage. The removable layer may protect the contents (e.g., molasses) from exposure to air and oxygen. The removable layer may be removed (e.g., pulled or peeled off) by the user before the first use of the cartridge.
[0009] Holes or openings in the cartridge, if left unsealed, can lead to leakage problems as well as loss of freshness (e.g., moisture content) or contamination of the substrate. It is desirable to close or seal the openings or holes in the cartridge prior to use or between uses if the entire contents of the cartridge are not used at one time for one or more reasons, such as to maintain freshness or prevent leakage of the substrate or to preserve the quality and integrity of the substrate during storage.
[0010] Some shisha devices are configured to puncture the cartridge when it is inserted into the shisha device, creating one or more holes. The shelf life of shisha cartridges without holes tends to be longer than the shelf life of shisha cartridges with holes, even if the holes are covered with a seal.
[0011] However, forming a hole when inserting a shisha cartridge into a shisha device may have drawbacks. For example, if a user does not use the shisha device and associated cartridge immediately or does not expel the aerosol-forming substrate in the cartridge within a typical time frame for expelling the substrate, the aerosol-forming substrate may lose freshness or the contents of the cartridge may leak. If the contents of the cartridge leak while the cartridge is in the shisha device, the leaked contents, which may contain a high sugar content, may be difficult to clean or may soil the device.
[0012] A user may insert a cartridge into a shisha device and not immediately use the device for a number of reasons. For example, the user may want to insert the cartridge for later use. The user may insert a cartridge and realize that they prefer a different cartridge content, such as a cartridge having an aerosol-forming substrate with a different flavor profile. The user may insert the cartridge with the intent of immediate use, but may become distracted prior to use.
[0013] Various embodiments of the present disclosure relate to a shisha device configured to puncture a cartridge comprising an aerosol-forming substrate. The shisha device is configured to prevent puncturing of the cartridge until the cartridge is inserted into a receptacle of the device. The puncturing of the cartridge preferably requires a separate step from the insertion of the cartridge into the receptacle of the shisha device. That is, the shisha device is preferably configured such that the insertion of the cartridge into the receptacle of the device does not puncture the cartridge without more.
[0014] Thus, a user can insert a cartridge into the shisha device so that the cartridge and device are ready for future use without losing freshness or leaking if the piercing mechanism is not activated. The user can remove a previously inserted cartridge from the shisha device, for example, if the user changes his or her mind about the cartridge he or she wants to use, without the cartridge being pierced. Furthermore, if the user is unable to start the intended shisha session after inserting the cartridge into the device, the user can be sure that the cartridge will maintain fresh contents and will not leak until the piercing mechanism is later activated. Thus, the freshness of the cartridge contents can be maintained and soiling of the device can be avoided.

The controller may include one or more of an application specific integrated circuit (ASIC) state machine, a digital signal processor, a gate array, a microprocessor, or an equivalent discrete or integrated logic circuit. The control electronics may include a memory that includes instructions that cause one or more components of the circuit to perform the functions or aspects of the control electronics. The functions attributed to the control electronics in this disclosure may be embodied as one or more of software, firmware, and hardware.
[0061] The electronic circuitry may include a microprocessor, which may be a programmable microprocessor. The electronic circuitry may be configured to regulate the supply of electrical power. The electrical power may be supplied to the heater element in the form of current pulses.
[0062] In some embodiments, the control electronics may be configured to monitor the electrical resistance of the heating element and to control the supply of power to the heating element in response to the electrical resistance of the heating element. In this manner, the control electronics may regulate the temperature of the resistive element.
[0063] The shisha device may include a temperature sensor, such as a thermocouple. The temperature sensor may be operably coupled to the control electronics to control the temperature of the heating element. The temperature sensor may be located in any suitable location. For example, the temperature sensor may be configured to be inserted into the cartridge when received in the receptacle to monitor the temperature of the aerosol-forming substrate being heated. Additionally or alternatively, the temperature sensor may be in contact with the heating element. Additionally or alternatively, the temperature sensor may be positioned to detect the temperature at the aerosol outlet of the shisha device or a portion thereof. The sensor may transmit a signal related to the sensed temperature to the control electronics. The control electronics may adjust the heating of the heating element in response to the signal to achieve a suitable temperature at the sensor.
[0064] The control electronics may be operably coupled to a power source. The shisha device may include any suitable power source. For example, the power source of the shisha device may be a battery or a set of batteries. The battery of the power source may be one or more of rechargeable, removable, and replaceable. Any suitable battery may be used. For example, a commercially available heavy duty type battery or a standard battery (such as a battery used for industrial heavy duty power tools). Alternatively, the power source may be any type of power source, including a supercapacitor or hypercapacitor. Alternatively, the assembly may be connected to an external power source and may be electrically and electronically designed for such purpose. Regardless of the type of power source employed, the power source preferably provides sufficient energy for normal functioning of the assembly for at least one shisha session until the aerosol is depleted from the aerosol-forming substrate in the cartridge before being recharged or requiring connection to an external power source. The power source preferably provides sufficient energy for normal functioning of the assembly for at least about 70 minutes of continuous operation of the device before being recharged or requiring connection to an external power source.
[0065] In one embodiment, the shisha device includes an aerosol generating element including a cartridge receptacle, a heating element, an aerosol outlet, and an air inlet. The cartridge receptacle is configured to receive a cartridge containing an aerosol-forming substrate. The heating element may define at least a portion of a surface of the receptacle.
[0066] The shisha device includes an air inlet channel in fluid communication with the receptacle. In use, when the aerosol-forming substrate within the cartridge is heated, the aerosol former components in the substrate are vaporized. Air flowing from the air inlet channel through the cartridge becomes entrained with the aerosol generated from the aerosol former components in the cartridge.
[0067] Some electrically heated shisha devices employ preheated air and typically employ airflow paths that move the air close to the heat source as the puff progresses. Additionally, some electrically heated shisha devices employ elements that increase radiative heat transfer by increasing the heated surface area.
[0068] The air inlet channel may include one or more openings through the cartridge receptacle. Air from outside the shisha device may flow through the channel and into the cartridge receptacle through one or more openings. If the channel includes more than one opening, it may include a manifold. The manifold may direct air flowing through the channel to each opening. The shisha device preferably includes two or more air inlet channels.
[0069] As described above, the shisha device includes a piercing element configured to pierce the cartridge to form one or more openings (such as an inlet, an outlet, or an inlet and an outlet) in the body of the cartridge to allow air to flow through the cartridge. The piercing element may be operably coupled to an actuator. Actuation of the actuator causes the piercing element to pierce the cartridge. The shisha device is preferably configured such that the actuator prevents the piercing element from piercing the cartridge until the shisha device is received in a receptacle. Preferably, actuation of the actuator is a separate step from inserting the cartridge into the receptacle or closing a lid or cover once the cartridge is received in the receptacle.
[0070] The shisha device may comprise any suitable piercing element. For example, the piercing element may mechanically pierce the body of the cartridge, may focus energy on the body of the cartridge to pierce the body of the cartridge, etc. For example, the piercing element may comprise an elongated element with a tapered end for piercing the body of the cartridge, the piercing element may comprise a laser or other suitable element for generating energy and focusing the energy at one or more locations in the body of the cartridge to form an opening, the piercing element may heat the cartridge to enable the formation of an opening in the body of the cartridge at a predetermined thermally unstable location of the cartridge, etc.
[0071] The heating element of the shisha device may serve as the piercing element if the cartridge is manufactured such that it is predisposed to form an opening in the body when the cartridge is heated. It is preferred that the heating element forms at least a portion of the receptacle.
[0072] The piercing element configured to generate and focus energy at one or more locations on the body may comprise an energy source, such as a light source. Such a piercing element may comprise one or more suitable lenses for focusing the energy emitted from the source at one or more locations on the body of the cartridge. For example, the piercing element may comprise a laser. The energy source may be operably coupled to the control electronics of the shisha device. An actuator may also be operably coupled to the control electronics. Actuation of the actuator may cause the control electronics to activate the energy source.
[0073] The piercing element configured to mechanically pierce may include an elongate element having a tapered end. The elongate element may be operatively coupled to an actuator. Actuation of the actuator may cause the tapered end to pierce the cartridge to form one or more openings in the body of the cartridge.
[0074] For example, actuation of the actuator may move the elongated element from a retracted position to an extended position. Movement of the elongated element from the retracted position to the extended position may cause the elongated element to puncture the cartridge. The shisha device may further comprise a spring operably coupled to the actuator for biasing the actuator toward a position that causes the elongated element to be in the retracted position.
[0075] The shisha device may comprise any suitable actuator operably coupled to the piercing element. The actuator may comprise a toggle, a button, a slide, etc. Preferably, the actuator is a separate element of the shisha device specifically designed for actuating the piercing element.
[0076] In some embodiments, movement of the actuator causes movement of the puncturing element. For example, the actuator may include a depressible button. Pressing the button may cause movement of a puncturing element, such as an elongated element, such as by moving the elongated element from a retracted position to an extended position, such that the puncturing element punctures the cartridge. A spring may be operably coupled to the button to bias the button toward a position that results in the elongated element being in the retracted position when the button is not depressed.
[0077] In some embodiments, the actuator may be operably coupled to the control electronics and coupled to the puncturing element. For example, the control electronics may be operably coupled to a motor configured to move a puncturing element, such as an elongated element, such as by moving the elongated element from a contracted position to an extended position so that the puncturing element punctures the cartridge. The motor may also move the elongated element from an extended position to a contracted position after the cartridge is punctured. As another example, the control electronics may be operably coupled to an energy source of the puncturing element, such as a laser, configured to direct emitted energy to a location in the body of the cartridge. As yet another example, the control electronics may be operably coupled to a heating element configured to form an opening in a thermally unstable portion of the body of the cartridge. For example, actuation of the actuator, such as switching a toggle, pressing a button, sliding a slide, etc., may result in the control electronics causing the motor to move the elongated element, actuating the energy source, heating the heating element, etc.
[0078] The shisha device may include a release configured to prevent the actuator from causing the piercing element to pierce the cartridge until the cartridge is received within the receptacle. As used in this disclosure, a "release" is a mechanism that prevents actuation of the actuator from causing the piercing element to pierce the cartridge. Any suitable mechanism may be employed. For example, the release may include one or more of an electrical component, a mechanical component, or an electromechanical component.
[0079] In some embodiments where the puncturing element comprises an elongate element that moves from a retracted position to an extended position to puncture the cartridge, the release comprises a mechanical mechanism that prevents the actuator from moving the elongate element from the retracted position to the extended position until the cartridge is received within the receptacle. For example, insertion of the cartridge into the receptacle can cause the release element to move from a first position to a second position. The release element in the first position can prevent the actuator from moving the elongate element from the retracted position to the extended position. The release element in the second position can allow the actuator to move the elongate element from the retracted position to the extended position. The release can comprise a mechanical release element extending into the receptacle such that insertion of the cartridge into the receptacle causes movement of the release element from the first position to the second position.
[0080] The release may include a motor. For example, the motor may be operatively coupled to a mechanical element that prevents the piercing element from piercing the cartridge. The mechanical element may contact the actuator, the piercing element, or other suitable element in a manner that prevents the actuator from causing the piercing element to pierce the cartridge.
[0081] The control electronics of the shisha device may function as a release. For example, the control electronics may be operably coupled to a motor operably coupled to a piercing element, such as a piercing element that includes an elongated element. The control electronics may be configured to prevent activation of the motor when a cartridge is received within a receptacle. As another example, the control electronics may be operably coupled to a piercing element that includes an energy source or heating element, and may be configured to prevent activation of the energy source or heating element until a cartridge is received within a receptacle.
[0082] The shisha device may include one or more sensors for determining whether the cartridge is received within the receptacle. The sensors may be operably coupled to the control electronics, which may prevent the actuator from causing the piercing element to pierce the cartridge until the sensors detect that the cartridge is received within the receptacle.
[0083] The shisha device may optionally include a sensor to detect whether a received cartridge has already been consumed, and may prevent the actuator from causing the piercing element to pierce the cartridge if the sensor detects that the cartridge has been consumed. Thus, actuation of the piercing element may be prevented until a previously unpierced, unused cartridge is received within the receptacle.
[0084] Any suitable sensor may be employed to detect whether a cartridge has been received in a receptacle or whether an unused cartridge is in a receptacle. For example, the sensor may include an optical sensor, an airflow sensor, a capacitance sensor, an inductive sensor, or the like.
[0085] In use, and after being punctured by the puncturing element, the cartridge includes one or more openings (such as an inlet, an outlet, or an inlet and an outlet) formed in the body to allow air to flow through the cartridge. Air entering the cartridge may flow across or through the aerosol-forming substrate, entraining the aerosol, and exiting the cartridge and receptacle via the aerosol outlet. From the aerosol outlet, the air carrying the aerosol enters the vessel of the shisha device.
[0086] The shisha device may include any suitable vessel that defines an interior volume configured to contain a liquid and defines an outlet in a head space above a liquid fill level. The vessel may include an optically transparent or opaque housing that allows a consumer to observe the contents contained in the vessel. The vessel may include a liquid fill boundary, such as a liquid fill line. The vessel housing may be formed of any suitable material. For example, the vessel housing may include glass or a suitable rigid plastic material. Preferably, the vessel is removable from the portion of the shisha assembly that includes the aerosol generating element to allow a consumer to fill, empty, or clean the vessel.
[0087] The vessel may be filled by the consumer to a liquid-fill level. The liquid preferably comprises water, which may optionally be infused with one or more colouring or flavouring agents, or colouring and flavouring agents. For example, the water may be infused with one or both of a botanical infusion and an herbal infusion.
[0088] Aerosol entrained in the air exiting the aerosol outlet of the receptacle may travel through a conduit positioned within the vessel. The conduit may be coupled to the aerosol outlet of the aerosol generation element and may have an opening below the liquid fill level of the vessel such that the aerosol flowing through the vessel passes through an opening in the conduit, through the liquid, into the headspace of the vessel and out through the headspace outlet for delivery to a consumer.
[0089] The headspace outlet may be coupled to a hose with a mouthpiece for delivering the aerosol to a consumer. The mouthpiece may include an actuation element, such as a user-actuable switch, or a puff sensor arranged to detect a user's puff at the mouthpiece, or both a user-actuable switch and a puff sensor. The actuation element is operably coupled to the control electronics of the shisha device. The actuation element may be wirelessly coupled to the control electronics. Actuation of the actuation element may cause the control electronics to activate the heating element, rather than constantly supplying energy to the heating element. As a result, the use of the actuation element may function to conserve energy compared to devices not employing such elements, providing on-demand heating rather than constant heating.
[0090] For illustrative purposes, one method for using the shisha device as described herein is provided below in chronological order. The vessel may be removed from other components of the shisha device and filled with water. One or more of natural fruit juice, botanical infusions, and herbal infusions may be added to the water for flavoring. The amount of liquid added should cover a portion of the conduit but not exceed the fill level mark that may be optionally present on the vessel. The vessel is then reassembled to the shisha device. The cartridge may be prepared by removing any removable layer (if present). A portion of the aerosol generating element may be removed or opened to allow the cartridge to be inserted into the receptacle. The aerosol generating element is then reassembled or closed.
[0091] The actuator may be activated by a user, for example, by toggling a switch, pressing a button, sliding a slide, etc. In some embodiments, the actuator may be activated by the device's control electronics upon detection that a cartridge is received in a receptacle. When a cartridge is received in a closed receptacle, activation of the actuator causes a piercing element to pierce the cartridge to form one or more openings in the body of the cartridge.
[0092] The device may then be turned on, as needed, before or after actuation of the actuator. Turning on the device may initiate a heating profile of the heating element to heat the aerosol-forming substrate to a temperature equal to or greater than the vaporization temperature of the aerosol-forming substrate, but less than the combustion temperature. The aerosol-forming compound of the aerosol-forming substrate vaporizes, generating an aerosol. The user may puff on the mouthpiece as desired. The user may continue to use the device for a desired length of time, or until no aerosol is visible or delivered. In some embodiments, the device may be arranged to automatically shut off when the cartridge, or a compartment of the cartridge, is depleted of available aerosol-forming substrate. In some embodiments, the consumer may refill the device with a new cartridge, for example after receiving a signal from the device that the aerosol-forming substrate in the cartridge is depleted or nearly depleted. The shisha device may be turned off at any time by the consumer, for example by switching off the device.
[0093] The shisha device may have any suitable air management. In one embodiment, a puff from the user creates a sucking effect, causing low pressure inside the device, which causes outside air to flow through the air inlet of the device, into the air inlet channel and into the receptacle. The air can then flow through the cartridge in the receptacle and can be entrained with the aerosol generated from the aerosol-forming substrate. The air with the entrained aerosol then exits the aerosol outlet of the receptacle and flows through a conduit into the liquid inside the vessel. The aerosol then bubbles out of the liquid, into a headspace above the level of the liquid in the vessel, and exits the headspace outlet through a hose and mouthpiece for delivery to the consumer. The flow of outside air and the flow of aerosol inside the shisha device may be driven by the puff from the user.

[0096] 1 is a schematic cross-sectional view of one embodiment of a shisha device 100. The device 100 includes a vessel 17 defining an interior volume configured to contain a liquid 19 and defining a headspace outlet 15 above a fill level of the liquid 19. The liquid 19 preferably includes water, which may optionally be infused with one or more colorants, or one or more flavorants, or one or more colorants and one or more flavorants. For example, the water may be infused with one or both of a botanical infusion and an herbal infusion.
[0097] The device 100 also includes an aerosol generating element 130. The aerosol generating element 130 includes a receptacle 140 configured to receive a cartridge 200 comprising an aerosol-forming substrate. The aerosol generating element 130 may also include a heating element 160. The heating element 160 may form at least one surface of the receptacle 140. In the illustrated embodiment, the heating element 160 defines a side of the receptacle 140. The aerosol generating element 130 also includes an air inlet channel 170 that draws air into the device 100. In some embodiments, a portion of the air inlet channel 170 is formed by the heating element 160 to heat the air before it enters the receptacle 140. The preheated air then enters the cartridge 200, which is also heated by the heating element 160, and carries the aerosol generated by the aerosol former and the aerosol-forming substrate. The air exits the outlet of the aerosol-generating element 130 and enters the conduit 190 .
[0098] A conduit 190 carries the air and aerosol into the vessel 17 below the level of the liquid 19. The air and aerosol may bubble through the liquid 19 and exit the headspace outlet 15 of the vessel 17. A hose 20 may be attached to the headspace outlet 15 for carrying the aerosol to the user's mouth. A mouthpiece 25 may be attached to or form part of the hose 20.
[0099] Exemplary airflow paths through the device in use are illustrated by the bold arrows in FIG.
[0100] Mouthpiece 25 may include an actuation element 27. Actuation element 27 may be a switch, button, or the like, or may be an inhalation sensor, or the like. Actuation element 27 may be located in any other suitable location on device 100. Actuation element 27 may wirelessly communicate with control electronics 30 to activate device 100 for use, such as by causing power source 35 to power heating element 160, or to cause the control electronics to activate heating element 160.
[0101] The control electronics 30 and power supply 35 may be located in any suitable location on the aerosol generation element 130, including locations other than at the bottom portion of the element 130 as illustrated in FIG.
[0102] The shisha device 100 includes an actuator 300, such as a push button, operably coupled to a piercing element (not shown in FIG. 1) for piercing the cartridge 200 prior to use.
[0103] 2A and 2B show an embodiment of a piercing element 400. The piercing element 400 is operably coupled to an actuator 300. The actuator 300 is a button that comprises an elongated rod coupled to a platform 330 of the piercing element 400. The actuator 300 extends through an opening in the housing 105 of the shisha device 100.
[0104] The piercing element 400 comprises elongated members 310, 315 having tapered ends for piercing the cartridge into the receptacle 140 formed at least in part by the heating element 160. The piercing element 400 also comprises upper 330 and lower 335 platforms from which the elongated members 310, 315 extend. An opening 165 is formed through a portion of the upper platform 330 to allow the elongated member 310 to extend into the receptacle 140 and pierce the cartridge when the actuator 300 is depressed (FIG. 2B). A spring 320 or other biasing element is used to bias the elongated member 310 and actuator 300 toward a non-actuated position (FIG. 2A).
[0105] The piercing element 400 also includes an extension 340 extending from the platform 330 and the lever element 350 and connecting the platform 335 to the extension 340. The piercing element 400 also includes a member 360 about which the lever element 350 pivots. A spring element 325 or other biasing element biases the platform 335 and the elongated member 315 to a retracted position (FIG. 2A). Depression of the actuator 300 causes the extension 340 to move downward, pivoting the lever element 350 and moving the lower platform 335 upward, causing the elongated element 315 to enter the receptacle 140 and puncture a cartridge received therein (FIG. 2B).
[0106] 3-5 are schematic diagrams of a shisha device 100 having a different piercing element 400 operably coupled to the control electronics 30. The control electronics may be operably coupled to a power source 35 and an actuator 300. Actuation of the actuator 300 causes the control electronics 35 to actuate the piercing mechanism 400. In FIG. 3, the piercing element 400 comprises a motor 410 and an elongated element having a tapered end 315. Actuation of the motor 410 by the control electronics causes the elongated member 315 to extend into the receptacle 140 to pierce a cartridge in the receptacle 140. In FIG. 4, the piercing element comprises an energy source 420 operably coupled to the control electronics 30 and a post 430 configured to focus energy from the energy source 420 to a location of the cartridge in the receptacle 140. In FIG. 5, the piercing element 400 comprises a heating element 160 operably coupled to the control electronics 30. Actuation of actuator 300 causes control electronics 30 to activate heating element 160, which can heat the cartridge within receptacle 140 sufficiently to form an opening in the cartridge at a thermally unstable location of the cartridge.
[0107] The shisha device 100 shown in Figures 3-5 includes a sensor 500 configured to detect whether a cartridge is received in the receptacle 140. The sensor 500 is operably coupled to the control electronics 30. If a cartridge is received in the receptacle 140, the sensor may send a signal to the control electronics 30 such that the control electronics 30 allows actuation of the piercing element 400 when the actuator 300 is actuated. If a cartridge is not received in the receptacle 310, the control electronics 30 prevents actuation of the piercing element 400 when the actuator 300 is actuated. In this manner, the control electronics and the sensor function as a release.
[0108] 6A and 6B show a receptacle 140 of a shisha device including a release 600 extending into the receptacle 140. Inserting a cartridge 200 into the receptacle 140 moves the release 600. Moving the release 600 by placing the cartridge 200 into the receptacle 140 may cause a latch or other suitable stop mechanism (not shown) to permit the elongated element (FIGS. 2A and 2B) to puncture the cartridge 200. When the cartridge 200 is not received in the receptacle 140 (FIG. 6A), the release 600 may be positioned to prevent the elongated element from puncturing the cartridge 200 by preventing actuation of the actuator.
[0109] 7A and 7B show an embodiment of a release 600 configured to prevent the actuator 300 from puncturing the puncturing element 400 until a cartridge is received in a receptacle. The release 600 comprises a motor 410 and a rod 610 extendable and retractable by the motor 410. When extended (FIG. 6A), the rod 610 interacts with the platform 335 of the puncturing element 400 to prevent the actuator's actuation from advancing the elongated element 315 operably coupled to the platform 335. When in a retracted position (FIG. 6B), the rod 610 does not interact with the platform 335, allowing the actuator 300 to actuate the elongated element 315 to advance and puncture the cartridge in the receptacle. The motor 410 may be coupled to control electronics and sensors, as needed.
[0110] Thus, a shisha device with a mechanism for puncturing a cartridge has been described.
