Description

[Technical field]

[0001] This application claims the benefit of priority to Korean Patent Application No. 10-2022-0115680 filed on September 14, 2022, and all contents disclosed in the Korean Patent Application are incorporated herein by reference.

[0002] The present invention relates to a battery module with a cooling function and a battery pack including the same, and more particularly to a battery module with a cooling function that dissipates heat generated in a battery cell and has a structure that is resistant to external impacts, and a battery pack including the same. [Background technology]

[0003] Recently, the demand for secondary batteries capable of storing electric energy produced by the development of alternative energy sources due to air pollution caused by the use of fossil fuels and energy depletion is increasing. Rechargeable secondary batteries are widely used in various fields such as mobile devices, electric vehicles, hybrid electric vehicles, and industrial robots.

[0004] Secondary batteries are used as energy sources for various electronic devices that are essential in modern society, and the required capacity is increasing due to the increased use and complication of mobile devices and the development of electric vehicles, etc. To meet user demand, many battery cells are arranged in small devices, while automobiles and the like use battery modules that electrically connect many battery cells or battery packs equipped with many such battery modules.

[0005] Meanwhile, the importance of safety is increasing due to the problem of fires occurring inside battery cells due to external shocks such as overheating or overcharging of battery cells. If the heat generated in the battery cells is not properly cooled, the lifespan of the battery cells will be shortened and in extreme cases it may even lead to fire or explosion, so cooling of the battery cells is essential.

[0006] In this regard, a prior art document discloses a battery module having a heat dissipation structure including a heat dissipation tube portion that dissipates heat generated in a plurality of adjacent cylindrical cells.

[0007] According to the above-mentioned prior art, there are advantages in that it is possible to prevent high temperature heat from concentrating in a certain area in the battery module, and the cooling performance of the battery can be improved by the heat dispersion tube.

[0008] However, the heat dispersion tube 11 is made up of a first heat dispersion tube part which is a circular tube with an annular cross section, a second heat dispersion tube part which is a circular tube with an annular cross section surrounding the first heat dispersion tube part, and a frame part which connects the first heat dispersion tube part and the second heat dispersion tube part, and therefore has a complex structure and is not easy to manufacture. Also, in order to surround and fix the cylindrical cell, a holder part 12 must be provided inside the case 10, a heat dispersion part made of graphite must be provided on the inner wall of the case, and a heat dissipation part 13 must be provided on the outside of the case to dissipate the transferred heat.

[0009] Therefore, the battery module of the prior art has a very complicated structure, which results in high manufacturing costs. In particular, when an external impact is applied, the cylindrical cells depend only on the holder portion, which makes them physically fragile. [Prior art documents] [Patent documents]

[0032] Hereinafter, the present invention will be described in detail with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which a person having ordinary skill in the art to which the present invention pertains can easily carry out the present invention. However, when describing the operation principle of the preferred embodiment of the present invention in detail, detailed description of related well-known functions or configurations will be omitted if it is determined that such detailed description may unnecessarily obscure the gist of the present invention.

[0033] In addition, the same reference numerals are used throughout the drawings for parts having similar functions and actions. Throughout the specification, when a part is said to be connected to another part, this includes not only the case where the part is directly connected to another part, but also the case where the part is indirectly connected via another element between the two parts. In addition, unless otherwise specified, the term "including a certain component" does not mean to exclude other components, but means that the part may further include other components.

[0034] Hereinafter, a battery module with a cooling function according to the present invention will be described with reference to the accompanying drawings.

[0035] Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a battery module according to a first embodiment of the present invention, and Fig. 3 is a plan view of the battery module shown in Fig. 2. Also, Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a cell frame constituting the battery module shown in Fig. 2 as viewed from one upper side, and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a cell frame constituting the battery module shown in Fig. 2 as viewed from one lower side.

[0036] 2 to 5, the battery module with a cooling function according to the present invention includes a plurality of battery cells B, a cell frame 100 for accommodating these battery cells B, and a cooling member 200 for dissipating heat generated in the battery cells B and supporting and fixing the battery cells B. Needless to say, wires, bus bars, etc. for electrically connecting the battery cells B may also be provided.

[0037] The battery cell B according to the present invention may be a cylindrical battery cell or a prismatic battery cell, but is preferably a cylindrical battery cell. The cylindrical battery cell B includes an electrode assembly, an insulating member, a positive electrode lead wire, a cap assembly, and a battery can housing the above. The electrode assembly may be a jelly roll type electrode assembly having a structure in which a separator is interposed between a long sheet-like negative electrode and a positive electrode and the electrode is wound up, a stack type electrode assembly composed of unit cells having a structure in which rectangular positive and negative electrodes are stacked with a separator interposed therebetween, a stack folding type electrode assembly in which unit cells are wound up with a long separator film, or a lamination stack type electrode assembly in which unit cells are stacked with a separator interposed therebetween and attached to each other.

[0038] In general, a positive electrode lead attached to an upper end of the electrode assembly is electrically connected to a cap assembly, and a negative electrode lead attached to a lower end of the electrode assembly is connected to the bottom of a battery can. Meanwhile, an insulating member may be located on the upper part of the electrode assembly. The insulating member serves to insulate the electrode assembly from the cap assembly.

[0039] The cap assembly is located on the insulating member, electrically connected to the positive electrode lead wire attached to the upper end of the electrode assembly, and coupled to the upper open end of the battery can to seal the electrode assembly contained inside the battery can.

[0040] Specifically, the cap assembly may include a current interrupting member, a current interrupting gasket, a safety vent, and a top cap, which are stacked in this order from the bottom up, and a crimping gasket and a welding holder may be located on the outer edges of the safety vent and the top cap.

[0041] The cell frame 100 has an approximately hexahedral shape with a space S to accommodate the battery cell B, and more specifically, can be composed of four side plates 110 and a bottom plate 120 connecting the lower edges of these side plates 110.

[0042] Here, the bottom plate 120 preferably has a plurality of heat dissipation holes 121, which will be described in detail later.

[0043] Meanwhile, the material of the cell frame 100 consisting of the four side plates 110 and one bottom plate 120 may be plastic, but is not necessarily limited to this.

[0044] The cooling member 200 is located in the space S, and is disposed in a shape that surrounds part of the outer side surface of the accommodated battery cell B. Here, the cooling member 200 is fixed to the bottom plate 120.

[0045] 2 and 3, six cooling members 200 are arranged in a shape surrounding one battery cell B. Here, one cooling member 200 is located between the outer sides of a total of three battery cells B that are housed adjacent to each other.

[0046] Although the drawing shows six cooling members 200 arranged on the outer surface of one battery cell B, this is merely an example, and three or more cooling members 200 may be arranged on the outer surface of one battery cell B.

[0047] 6 is an enlarged perspective view of a cooling member provided in the cell frame of FIG. 4, and FIG. 7 is a partial cross-sectional view taken along the direction AA of FIG.

[0048] First, referring to FIG. 6, the cooling member 200 may be composed of a first member 210 located in the longitudinal direction of the battery cell B, and a second member 220 connected to one end of the first member 210.

[0049] The first member 210 may include three first surfaces 211 and three second surfaces 212 connecting the first surfaces 211 located adjacent to each other. Here, the first surfaces 211 are preferably curved with a radius of curvature that is the same as or similar to that of the outer surface of the battery cell B so as to surround the outer surface of the battery cell B. The second surfaces 212 are for separating the battery cells B housed adjacent to each other at a predetermined interval. Such a cooling member 200 may be made of a metal material having excellent thermal conductivity, preferably aluminum.

[0050] On the other hand, in order to stably support the battery cell B and rapidly dissipate generated heat, the length of the first member 210 is preferably 0.5 times or more the length of the battery cell B, but is not limited to this.

[0051] The second member 220 is a flat plate having a certain thickness, and one end of the first member 210 is fixed to the center corresponding to the center of mass. Here, the first member 210 and the second member 220 form a right angle with each other.

[0052] As described above, the cooling member 200 consisting of the first member 210 and the second member 220 is fixed to the bottom plate 120. As shown in Fig. 7, a part of the outer edge of the second member 220 is recessed into the bottom plate 120, thereby fixing the cooling member 200 to the bottom plate 120.

[0053] Here, it is more preferable that the outer surface of the outer edge of the second member 220 be provided with an uneven portion so that the bottom plate 120 and the second member 220 can be fixed in closer contact with each other more firmly.

[0054] The second member 220 is preferably positioned across the heat dissipation hole 121 of the bottom plate 120. That is, the center portion of the second member 220 is exposed to the outside through the heat dissipation hole 121, while the outer edge portion is fixed in a recessed state to the bottom plate 120 near the heat dissipation hole 121.

[0055] Meanwhile, on the outer surfaces of the battery cell B, i.e., on the side and bottom surfaces of the battery cell B, resin layers 300 are positioned for the purposes of dissipating heat generated in the battery cell B and reliably fixing the battery cell B. Specifically, the resin layers 300 are interposed between the side surfaces of the battery cell B and the first member 210, between the center of the bottom surface of the battery cell B and the bottom plate 120, and between the outer edge of the bottom surface of the battery cell B and the second member 220.

[0056] Here, the material constituting the resin layer 300 is a thermally conductive material (TIM: Thermal Interface Material), that is, a material having thermal conductivity and adhesiveness, and may be, for example, an acrylic resin, a urethane resin, or a silicone resin. Of course, it may also be a resin having physical properties similar to these.

[0057] When the battery module has the above-mentioned structure, heat generated in the battery cell B is transferred to the resin layer 300 and then dissipated to the outside via the cooling member 200. In particular, heat from the side of the battery cell B passes through the resin layer 300, the first member 210, and the second member 220 in that order, and in particular, the second member 220 is located at the heat dissipation port 121 exposed to the outside, so that the heat can be dissipated quickly. Of course, it goes without saying that a part of the heat can be dissipated to the upper part of the first member 210.

[0058] Moreover, the heat from the bottom surface of the battery cell B is transferred to the resin layer 300 and then dissipated via the second member 220.

[0059] In this way, the battery module according to the present invention has a structure that can quickly dissipate heat generated not only from the side surfaces of the battery cells B but also from the bottom surface of the battery cells B. Furthermore, the first member 210 and the second member 220 constituting the cooling member 200 are perpendicular to each other and the second member 220 is recessed into the bottom plate 120, so that the cooling member 200 is firmly fixed to the cell frame 100.

[0060] Fig. 8 is a perspective view of a cooling member according to a second embodiment of the present invention. While the cooling member of the first embodiment described with reference to Fig. 6 is configured by connecting one first member to one second member, the cooling member of the second embodiment has a plurality of first members connected to one second member.

[0061] Specifically, a single flat second member 220 is provided with a plurality of openings 221, and a plurality of first members 210 are vertically connected around the openings 221.

[0062] Here, the opening 221 is filled with the bottom plate 120 , and the bottom plate 120 is also located on the upper and lower surfaces near the outer edge of the opening 221 , so that the cooling member 200 is firmly fixed to the bottom plate 120 .

[0063] On the other hand, the first member 210 is similar to that of the first embodiment described above, so a duplicated description will be omitted.

[0064] FIG. 9 is a perspective view of a cell frame constituting a battery module according to a third embodiment of the present invention, viewed from one lower side, and FIG. 10 is a perspective view of a cooling member constituting the battery module shown in FIG.

[0065] 9 and 10, the battery module according to the third embodiment of the present invention includes a plurality of first members on one second member, which is the same as the second embodiment except that the second member 220 does not have an opening and the bottom plate 120 does not have a heat dissipation hole.

[0066] According to the third embodiment, there are advantages in that the cooling member 200 is structurally stronger and is relatively easy to manufacture.

[0067] FIG. 11 is a perspective view of a cooling member according to a fourth embodiment of the present invention.

[0068] The cooling member 200 according to the fourth embodiment includes a first member 210 and a second member 220. Here, the first member 210 may include four first surfaces 211 and four second surfaces 212 connecting the first surfaces 211 adjacent to each other.

[0069] As in the first embodiment, the first surface 211 is preferably curved with a radius of curvature that is the same as or similar to that of the outer surface of the battery cell so as to surround the outer surface of the battery cell.

[0070] The second member 220 is a flat plate having a constant thickness, and one end of the first member 210 is fixed to the center, which corresponds to the center of mass, at a right angle to the second member 220 .

[0071] 12 is a flow chart illustrating a method for manufacturing a battery module according to a first embodiment of the present invention. The manufacturing method will be described with reference to FIG. 12 by taking the battery module of the first embodiment as an example.

[0072] This manufacturing method can include a first step of preparing a cooling member, a second step of preparing a cell frame with the cooling member fixed thereto, and a third step of housing battery cells in the cell frame.

[0073] First, the first step is to prepare a cooling member made of a metallic material, which is composed of a first member positioned along the longitudinal direction of the battery cell and a second member connected to one side end of the first member, and the manufacturing method is not particularly limited.

[0074] The second step is to prepare a cell frame that is made up of a number of side plates and a bottom plate, forms a space in which the battery cells can be housed, and has the number of cooling members prepared in the first step fixed to the space. Here, it is preferable to manufacture the cell frame and the cooling members into an integrated structure by insert-injecting the cooling members when injecting the cell frame.

[0075] Meanwhile, the heat dissipation hole of the bottom plate can be formed when the cell frame is injected, but this is not necessarily limited thereto, and it can also be additionally punched out after the cell frame is manufactured.

[0076] The third step is to house the battery cell so that the cooling member is located in the space of the cell frame, more specifically, so that the cooling member is located on the outer surface of the battery cell.

[0077] Furthermore, it is preferable to fill a predetermined amount of the thermally conductive resin layer, which fixes the battery cells and transfers generated heat, into the space after the second stage, i.e., before the battery cells are housed in the cell frame, but it is also possible to fill it after the battery cells are housed.

[0078] The present invention may provide a battery pack including the above-mentioned battery module. The battery module or the battery pack may be mounted in a device. For example, the device may be an electronic device including a large-capacity battery, such as an electric vehicle, a hybrid vehicle, or a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle.

[0079] Although certain parts of the present invention have been described in detail above, those having ordinary skill in the art will understand that such specific descriptions are merely preferred embodiments and do not limit the scope of the present invention. It will be apparent to those skilled in the art that various changes and modifications are possible within the scope and technical spirit of the present invention, and it goes without saying that such changes and modifications fall within the scope of the appended claims.
