Abstract
Description
[Technical Field]
[0001] The present invention relates to tongs, such as those used in cooking. [Background technology]
[0002] Tongs are a very common cooking tool used in kitchens and barbecues, allowing cooks to pick up food without getting too close to the heat source. They allow cooks to insert food into a hot cooking area, flip food, remove food, etc. Typically, tongs have two arms connected at one end by a spring-loaded hinge, which allows the free ends to converge to grasp food.
[0003] It is often convenient to lock the tong arms in place, particularly in the closed position. The most common locking mechanism uses a pull tab located at the hinge where a first arm connects to a second arm. To lock the tongs closed, the cook closes the tongs with one hand and pulls the tab with the other hand. To unlock the tongs, the cook holds the tongs with one hand and pushes the tab back toward the hinge. Thus, this common locking mechanism requires two hands to lock and unlock the tong arms. Other locks require the user to change grip positions to access the lock.
[0004] Another common mechanism for overcoming the need to use two hands or change grip positions to lock and unlock the tong arms is the use of gravity-based locking. With gravity-based locking, the user squeezes the tongs and holds the distal end facing up or down, allowing gravity to pull the locking portion into the locked or unlocked configuration. Such tongs require an extra movement to reorient the tongs, which is not always desirable. For example, if the distal end of the tongs has liquid, oil, or sauce on it, the user may not want the liquid, oil, or sauce to drip down onto the hinge by holding the distal end facing up.
[0005] For the foregoing reasons, there is a need for a tong that can be locked or unlocked with one hand without changing the grip position of the tong and without having to change the orientation of the tong. Summary of the Invention
[0006] The present invention relates to a tongs that can be locked or unlocked with one hand without changing the gripping position of the tongs or the need to change the orientation of the tongs. The tongs utilize a locking mechanism located on the inner surface of the arms that allows the arms to be locked together simply by squeezing them together, and unlocked simply by squeezing the arms together. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
[0008] The detailed description set forth below in connection with the accompanying drawings is intended as a description of the presently preferred embodiments of the invention, but is not intended to represent the only form in which the invention may be constructed or utilized. The specification describes the functions and sequence of steps for constructing and operating the invention in connection with the illustrated embodiment. However, it should be understood that the same or equivalent functions and steps may be accomplished by different embodiments which are also intended to be encompassed within the spirit and scope of the invention.
[0009] 1-5, the present invention provides a tongs 100 having two arms 102, 202 and a locking portion 300 that can be engaged to lock the arms 102, 202 in place and disengaged to allow movement of the arms 102, 202, by simply squeezing the arms 102, 202 together, using one hand and without having to reposition the user's fingers or reorient the tongs 100. In this manner, the user can use the tongs 100 as intended, and when the user wants to lock the arms 102, 202, they simply grip the tongs 100 with nothing between them, and the locking portion can be disengaged by simply squeezing the arms 102, 202 together, without having to adjust the user's grip or reorient the tongs 100. In this way, the same action to lock the arms 102, 202 (squeezing the arms 102, 202) is the same action to unlock the arms 102, 202.
[0010] The tong 100 comprises a first arm 102 having a first proximal end 104, a first distal end 106 opposite the first proximal end 104, a first inner surface 108 between the first proximal end 104 and the first distal end 106, and a first outer surface 110 opposite the first inner surface 108 and between the first proximal end 104 and the first distal end 106. The tong 100 also comprises a second arm 202 having a second proximal end 204, a second distal end 206 opposite the second proximal end 204, a second inner surface 208 between the second proximal end 204 and the second distal end 206, and a second outer surface 210 opposite the second inner surface 208 and between the second proximal end 204 and the second distal end 206. The first arm 102 is connected to the second arm 202 by a hinge 150 at a first proximal end 104 and a second proximal end 204 .
[0011] The arms 102, 202 can be made of a rigid material, such as metal, plastic, or wood. In a preferred embodiment, the arms 102, 202 are generally straight, such that the first arm 102 and the second arm 202 are generally parallel when the first distal end 106 meets the second distal end 206, as shown in Figures 3 and 4. For example, when measured at the proximal ends 104, 204, the first arm 102 and the second arm 202 can form an angle of about 15 degrees or less when the first distal end 106 meets the second distal end 206. More preferably, the angle can be about 10 degrees or less. Most preferably, the angle can be about 5 degrees or less.
[0012] The first proximal end 104 of the first arm 102 and the second proximal end 204 of the second arm 202 are connected by a hinge 150. The hinge 150 allows the distal ends 106, 206 to move toward and away from each other, thereby allowing a user to pick up an object with the distal ends 106, 206. As shown in FIG. 5, a tongue spring 152 can be disposed on the hinge 150 to apply a biasing force to the first arm 102 and the second arm 202, which biasing force maintains the first distal end 106 distally spaced from the second distal end 206, as shown in FIG. 1. In a preferred embodiment, the first distal end 106 can have a first flexible tip 112, and the second distal end 206 can have a second flexible tip 212. The flexible tip 112, 212 can be made from a durable yet flexible material such as silicone, plastic, rubber, or the like.
[0013] The flexibility of the flexible tips 112, 212 facilitates the locking mechanism. Specifically, the lock 300 is attached to the first arm 102 and the second arm 202 such that the first arm 102 and the second arm 202 must be closer to each other for the lock 300 to engage than when the first flexible tip 112 simply contacts the second flexible tip 212. Thus, the first and second arms do not lock together when the first flexible tip 112 simply contacts the second flexible tip 212. Rather, the arms 102, 202 must provide overtravel that slightly deflects the flexible tips 112, 212 and allows the arms 102, 202 to move closer to each other until the lock 300 engages and locks the arms 102, 202 together, as shown in FIG. 3 . This overtravel feature reduces the likelihood of the first arm 102 and the second arm 202 becoming inadvertently locked during normal use. That is, when grasping a small or thin ingredient with the tongs 100, the user does not want the tongs 100 to become inadvertently locked because the first arm 102 is too close to the second arm 202.
[0014] 5, the first inner surface 108 of the first arm 102 can define a first groove 114, and the second inner surface 208 of the second arm 202 can define a second groove 214. The first groove 114 and the second groove 214 provide depth to each of the first arm 102 and the second arm 202 to provide space for attachment of the first flexible tip 112 and the second flexible tip 212 to the first arm 102 and the second arm 202, respectively.
[0015] In a preferred embodiment, the locking mechanism may be in the form of a latch 301 and strike 302, such as a Grab Catch sold by Grainger. The latch 301 may be attached to the first inner surface 108 of the first arm 102. The strike 302 may be attached to the second inner surface 208 of the second arm 202. The latch 301 and strike 302 are configured to connect with each other when the first arm 102 and the second arm 202 are adjacent to each other.
[0016] In a preferred embodiment, locking portion 300 includes a latch 301 and a strike 302. In the engaged locking configuration, latch 301 receives and engages strike 302, preventing the strike from disengaging from the latch. Referring to FIG. 2, latch 301 can include a housing 310 attached to first inner surface 108 and a spring-loaded catch 312 attached to housing 310. Spring-loaded catch 312 can have a post 314 and a clasp 316 connected to post 314. A spring 318 within the housing can bias against post 314.
[0017] The strike 302 can include a base 320 attached to the second inner surface 208 and a flanged head 322 opposite the base 320. The latch 301 and strike 302 are configured to connect to one another in a locked configuration when the first arm 102 and the second arm 202 are generally parallel to one another. In the engaged, locked configuration, the flanged head 322 abuts the post 314 such that the clasp 316 surrounds the flanged head 322, as shown in FIG. 3 . In a preferred embodiment, when the strike 302 presses against the post 314 of the latch 301, the strike 302 forces the post 314 deeper into the housing 310. As the post 314 descends into the housing 310, the clasp 316 is drawn together, and the clasp 316 surrounds the flanged head 322 as the clasp 316 and flanged head 322 enter the housing 310. Inside the housing 310 is a latch spring 318 that abuts the post 314 and exerts a biasing force against the post 314 to push it out of the housing 310. When the post 314 is pushed deep enough into the housing 310, an internal catch (not shown) locks the post 314 in place, and when the squeezing force is released, the arms 102, 202 are locked in place. When the arms 102, 202 are squeezed again, the internal catch is released and the latch spring 318 pushes the post 314 outward, opening the clasp 316 out of the housing 310, thereby releasing the strike 302, while the tongue spring 152 separates the distal ends 106, 206 of the arms 102, 202.
[0018] In a preferred embodiment, latch 301 and strike 302 are positioned on first arm 102 and second arm 202 such that first distal end 106 abuts second distal end 206 when strike 302 is in the locked configuration engaged with latch 301. In embodiments having first flexible tip 112 and second flexible tip 212, first flexible tip 112 and second flexible tip 212 are distal ends 106, 206, and first flexible tip 112 and second flexible tip 212 abut each other at their free ends in the locked configuration.
[0019] In a preferred embodiment, in the locking configuration, the latch 301 and strike 302 are completely inboard relative to the first outer surface 110 and the second outer surface 210. In this configuration, because the latch 301 and strike 302 are inboard, they are unlikely to be touched during normal use when the tong 100 is held in a natural and easy-to-handle manner. When the tong 100 is held naturally and properly, a user's hand only touches the first outer surface 110 and the second outer surface 210 and the sides of the tong 100, not the inner surfaces 108 and 208. Therefore, unlike other tongs in which the locking mechanism is exposed on the outside, the tong 100 of the present invention prevents a user from inadvertently touching any part of the locking mechanism and inadvertently disengaging the lock 300.
[0020] In a preferred embodiment, latch 301 and strike 312 are configured along first arm 102 and second arm 202, respectively, to lock only when first flexible tip 106 is pressed against second flexible tip 206. That is, the first flexible tip 106 contacting second flexible tip 206 alone is not sufficient to lock latch 301 and strike 302. Rather, sufficient squeezing force must be applied to cause first flexible tip 106 and second flexible tip 206 to bend or deflect in opposite directions before latch 301 captures strike 302. This configuration reduces the likelihood that latch 301 will capture strike 302 during normal use when the user does not intend to lock tong 100.
[0021] To facilitate locking the arms 102, 202 in the proper position, the latch 301 can be in the first groove 114 and the strike 302 can be in the second groove 214. Preferably, a portion of the latch 301 can protrude from the first groove 114 facing inward toward the strike 302, and a portion of the strike 302 can protrude from the second groove 214 facing inward toward the latch 301. Preferably, the portion of the latch 301 protruding from the first groove 114 is at least the clasp 312, and the portion of the strike 302 protruding from the second groove 214 is the flanged head 322. Because the latch 301 and strike 302 protrude inward, no portion of the latch 301 or strike 302 protrudes from the outer surface of the arms 102, 202, where the locking mechanism could be accidentally disengaged.
[0022] In a preferred embodiment, the latch 301 and strike 302 are configured to disconnect from one another from the locked configuration when the first arm 102 and the second arm 202 are squeezed toward one another. Thus, if a user locks the tongs 100 in a closed configuration and continues to hold the tongs 100 in the user's hand, to unlock the arms 102, 202 while maintaining the same grip, the user simply squeezes the arms 102, 202 slightly closer together, and the latch 301 releases the strike 302. Thus, there is no need to reposition the hand on the tongs 100, no need to search for a release button, no need for the user to use the other hand to unlock, no need to reorient the tongs 100, etc. The present invention allows the tongs 100 to be locked and unlocked using only the natural movement of using the tongs, i.e., squeezing the arms 102, 202.
[0023] In a preferred embodiment, the latch 301 and strike 302 are fixed along the first arm 102 and the second arm 202, respectively. In some embodiments, the latch 301 and strike 302 can be adjustable along the length of the first arm 102 and the second arm 202. Stops can be placed at preset positions along the first arm 102 and the second arm 202 to allow for proper alignment of the latch 301 and strike 302. In a preferred embodiment, the locking portion 300 is located toward the middle of the arms 102, 202. For example, the locking portion 300 can be located at least about 2 inches from the hinge 150 toward the distal end 106, 206. In some embodiments, the locking portion 300 can be at least about 3 inches from the hinge 150 toward the distal end 106, 206. In some embodiments, the lock 300 may be at least about 4 inches from the hinge 150 towards the distal end 106, 206. In some embodiments, the lock 300 may be at least about 5 inches from the hinge 150 towards the distal end 106, 206. In some embodiments, the lock 300 may be at least about 6 inches from the hinge 150 towards the distal end 106, 206. In some embodiments, the lock 300 may be at least about 7 inches from the hinge 150 towards the distal end 106, 206. For longer tongues 100, the lock 300 may be further away from the hinge 150 and closer to the distal end 106, 206. The lock 300 may be fastened to the arm 102, 202 using any type of fastening mechanism, such as adhesive, screws, welding, male and female screws, etc. In some embodiments, an opening 156 may need to be formed through the arms 102 , 202 to accommodate the lock 300 .
[0024] In some embodiments, the tongue 100 can further include a secondary lock 154 adjacent the joint 150 to help maintain the arms 102, 202 in a locked configuration. For example, if a user does not intend to use the tongue 100 for an extended period of time, the secondary lock 154 can be used to hold the first arm 102 and the second arm 202 together to relieve stress on the tongue spring 152 against the latch 301 and strike 302. The secondary lock 154 can extend the life of the latch 301 and strike 302.
[0025] In use, a user uses tongs 100 as tongs are normally intended. When a user wants to lock arms 102, 202 in place, the user squeezes arms 102, 202 together, pressing first flexible tip 112 against second flexible tip 212, locking latch 301 with strike 302. To unlock tongs 100, without moving any of the finger positions on first arm 102 and second arm 202, the user squeezes first arm 102 toward second arm 202, releasing latch 301 from strike 302.
[0026] The foregoing description of the preferred embodiment of the present invention has been presented for purposes of illustration and description. It is not intended to be exhaustive or to limit the invention to the precise form disclosed. Many modifications and variations are possible in light of the above teaching. It is intended that the scope of the present invention be limited not by this detailed description, but rather by the appended claims and their equivalents. [Industrial Applicability]
[0027] The present invention is particularly industrially applicable to the development, manufacture, and use of tongs, which are commonly used as kitchen utensils for picking up and moving food, and which utilize a locking mechanism located on the arms of the tongs to lock the two arms of the tongs together so that the lock is activated and released by simply squeezing the arms together, without changing the position in which the tongs are held and without the need to change the orientation of the tongs, and which can then be released with one hand.
