AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Conventional wireless communication systems using non-terrestrial networks (NTNs) with High Altitude Platform Stations (HAPS) face communication quality degradation and service interruptions due to rainfall, especially when there is only one HAPS ground station, as existing methods to switch to alternative stations are ineffective.

Method used

A wireless communication system and method that includes a radio relay station monitoring and control device, which predicts rain attenuation using weather forecast data to proactively move the HAPS to positions with less rainfall, ensuring communication quality by selecting optimal positions based on predicted rain attenuation and communication quality.

Benefits of technology

Ensures communication quality and reduces service interruptions by predicting and avoiding rain-affected areas, thereby improving the uptime and availability of NTN feeder links.

Abstract

The present disclosure relates to a wireless communication system and has the objective of ensuring communication quality even when rainfall affects a feeder link of a non-terrestrial network, to thereby increase operation rate. The wireless communication system comprises a wireless relay station that stays in the air, a ground station that transmits and receives radio wave to and from the wireless relay station, and a wireless relay station monitoring and control device that monitors and controls these stations. The wireless relay station monitoring and control device calculates, on the basis of meteorological prediction information, prediction values of a rainfall attenuation amount of a feeder link at movement candidate positions and a current position within the wireless relay area of the wireless relay station. On the basis of the prediction values, the communication quality of the feeder link is predicted at the movement candidate positions and the current position of the wireless relay station. A position having less attenuation of the feeder link than that when the wireless relay station stays at the current location is selected from among the movement candidate positions on the basis of the predicted communication quality. The wireless relay station monitoring and control device is further configured to perform a process for moving the wireless relay station to the selected position.
