The method includes adhering a first adhesive region to at least one of the skin of the user's pelvis, pubic bone, or abdomen on a first side of the penis, and then removing a second adhesive covering from a second adhesive region secured to an outer surface of the first portion of the impermeable barrier. The second adhesive region extends at least partially around the periphery of the opening, such that the second adhesive region is positioned at least partially between the opening and a second side of the fluid-impermeable barrier opposite the first side. [0003] Embodiments disclosed herein relate to fluid collection devices having multi-part adhesive covers, as well as related systems and methods of use. Conventional fluid collection devices may include an adhesive and a single adhesive cover or backing removably secured to the adhesive. The adhesive may be configured to secure the fluid collection device to a user, such as by securing the adhesive to skin in at least one of the pelvic, pubic, or abdominal regions around the user's penis. The single adhesive cover of a conventional fluid collection device may extend around both sides of the fluid collection device's opening. Therefore, to secure the fluid collection device to the user, the entire single adhesive cover of a conventional fluid collection device may need to be removed before the fluid collection device is positioned on the user. Placing and securing the adhesive with the entire adhesive cover removed can be difficult and uncomfortable for both the user and the caregiver. For example, an unerect penis tends to lie to the side, requiring the user's or caregiver's hand to hold the top of the penis in order to thread the penis through the opening of the fluid collection device. This holding of the top of the penis can become difficult when the hand holding the penis cannot pass through the opening of the fluid collection device with the penis. When the hand releases the penis, the penis may fall to the side and come into contact with the uncoated adhesive. The hand assisting in securing the fluid collection device to the user may also come into contact with the uncoated adhesive. The uncoated adhesive may then stick to or adhere to the hand and / or penis rather than (or in addition to) the skin surrounding the penis, and the penis does not actually pass through the opening of the fluid collection device as intended.
[0012] At least one, some, or all of the embodiments of the fluid collection device described herein may include one or more adhesive regions and two (or more) adhesive covers removably secured to the one or more adhesive regions. This configuration of one or more adhesive regions and two or more adhesive covers provides the technical effect of securing the one or more adhesive regions to the user's skin one at a time, reducing the chance of the one or more adhesive regions being secured to an undesirable location, such as the hand or the penis itself. For example, a penis may be inserted into the opening of the fluid collection device before any of the two or more adhesive covers are removed from the one or more adhesive regions. The first and second portions of the one or more adhesive regions may be positioned at least partially on either side of the opening in the fluid collection device and are effective to secure the fluid collection device to the user with the penis extended through the opening.
[0013] FIG. 1 is a block diagram of a fluid collection system 10 according to one embodiment. The fluid collection system 10 may be included in any of the fluid collection system embodiments described herein. The system 10 includes a fluid (e.g., urine) collection device 12 (e.g., any of the fluid collection assemblies disclosed herein), a fluid collection container 14, and a vacuum source (e.g., a pump). The fluid collection device 12, the fluid collection container 14, and the vacuum source 16 may be fluidly coupled to one another via one or more tubes 17 or conduits. For example, the fluid collection device 12 may be operably coupled to one or more of the fluid collection container 14 or the vacuum source 16 via the tube 17. In some embodiments, the vacuum source 16 may be secured directly to the fluid collection container 14. Fluid (e.g., urine or other bodily fluid) collected in the fluid collection device 12 may be removed from the fluid collection device 12 via the tube 17 secured to the fluid collection device 12. The urine collection device 200 described below is provided as an example of a urine collection device having an attachment system 250. The first portion 254a of the adhesive region 254 may then be adhered to the user's skin near the penis 50, such as at least one of the skin of the pelvis, pubic bone, or abdomen near the penis 50, before the second adhesive cover 252b is peeled off the adhesive region 254.With the first portion of the adhesive region 254 adhered to the user's skin (underneath the first adhesive region 254a in FIG. 4B ), at least a portion of the second side of the bottom 201 of the fluid-impermeable barrier 202 may be lifted, and the second adhesive cover 252b may be peeled or removed from the second portion of the adhesive region 254, as shown in FIG. 4B . The second portion 254b of the adhesive region 254 may then be adhered to the user's skin near the penis 50, such as at least one of the skin of the pelvis, pubic bone, or abdomen near the user. With the first portion 254a and the second portion 254b of the adhesive region 254 secured to the user, the penis 50 may extend through the opening 206 into the chamber 204.

1. 1. A fluid collection device comprising: a fluid-impermeable barrier having a first portion, a second portion, and a chamber defined between the first portion and the second portion, the first portion including an outer surface and an inner surface and defining an opening sized to receive a penis; a tube having a tube opening positioned within the chamber and configured to provide fluid communication between the chamber and a vacuum source; a fluid-permeable body positioned at least partially within the chamber, the fluid-permeable body including a fluid-permeable support and a wicking material, the fluid-permeable support being substantially planar between the opening and the tube opening of the tube, the wicking material covering at least a portion of a side of the fluid-permeable support facing the user's skin; an attachment system secured to the outer surface of the fluid impermeable barrier; The attachment system comprises: one or more adhesive regions extending at least partially around the periphery of the opening, whereby portions of the one or more adhesive regions are positioned on at least either side of the opening, and the one or more adhesive regions are configured to adhere to a user's skin; and and two adhesive covers removably secured to the one or more adhesive regions, the two adhesive covers positioned such that the opening is positioned between the two adhesive covers.
2. 2. A fluid collection device as described in claim 1, characterized in that the one or more adhesive regions include two adhesive regions spaced apart from one another, and each of the two adhesive covers is removably secured to a different one of the two adhesive regions such that a first space is located between a first set of terminal edges of the two adhesive regions and a second space is located between a second set of terminal edges of the two adhesive regions.
3. 3. The fluid collection device of claim 2, wherein each of the two adhesive covers is substantially arcuate.

The fluid collection device of claim 1, wherein the fluid-impermeable barrier includes a proximal end region, a distal end region, and two side regions extending at least partially between the proximal and distal end regions; A fluid collection device, characterized in that the opening in the fluid-impermeable barrier is positioned between the two side regions, between the distal end region and the proximal end region.

A fluid collection device as described in claim 4, characterized in that the one or more adhesive areas are positioned between the opening and each of the two side areas, and each of the adhesive covers is positioned at least partially on the one or more adhesive areas between the opening and a different one of the two side areas.
6. 6. The fluid collection device of claim 5, wherein the one or more adhesive regions and at least a portion of each of the two adhesive covers are positioned at least partially between the opening and the distal end region.
7. 7. The fluid collection device of claim 6, wherein the two adhesive covers each include a terminal edge positioned between the opening and the distal end region.
8. 8. The fluid collection device of claim 7, wherein the terminal edges of the two adhesive covers abut one another between the opening and the distal end region.
9. 6. The fluid collection device of claim 5, wherein the one or more adhesive areas are a single continuous adhesive area.
10. 10. The fluid collection device of claim 9, wherein the continuous adhesive area is a substantially U-shaped continuous adhesive area, and the two adhesive covers are positioned adjacent to each other to form a substantially complementary U-shape to the U-shaped continuous adhesive area.
11. 10. The fluid collection device of claim 9, wherein the continuous adhesive area is a substantially V-shaped continuous adhesive area, and the two adhesive covers are positioned adjacent to each other to form a substantially complementary V-shape to the V-shaped continuous adhesive area.

The fluid collection device of claim 9, wherein the continuous adhesive area is a substantially O-shaped continuous adhesive area around the periphery of the opening, and the two adhesive covers are positioned adjacent to each other to form a substantially complementary O-shape to the O-shaped continuous adhesive area.

A fluid collection device as described in claim 4, wherein the one or more adhesive regions include two adhesive regions spaced apart from one another between the opening and the distal end region, and each of the two adhesive covers is removably secured to a different one of the two adhesive regions.
14. 14. The fluid collection device of claim 13, wherein the two adhesive covers each include a terminal edge spaced apart from one another between the opening and the two adhesive areas.

The fluid collection device of claim 13, at least a portion of the one or more adhesive regions is positioned between the opening and the proximal end region; a first adhesive cover of the two adhesive covers removably secured to at least a portion of the one or more adhesive regions and positioned between the opening and the proximal end region; at least a portion of the one or more adhesive regions is positioned between the opening and the distal end region; A fluid collection device characterized in that a second of the two adhesive covers is removably secured to at least a portion of the one or more adhesive regions and positioned between the opening and the distal end region.
16. 16. The fluid collection device of claim 15, wherein each of the two adhesive covers is substantially arcuate.
17. 10. The fluid collection device of claim 1, wherein the fluid permeable body comprises a fluid permeable spun nylon fiber structure.

A method of collecting a fluid, comprising: positioning the user's penis at least partially in a chamber defined by a fluid collection device through an opening defined by a first portion of a fluid-impermeable barrier of the fluid collection device, the fluid-impermeable barrier having a second portion and a chamber defined between the first and second portions of the fluid-impermeable barrier, the fluid collection device including: a tube having a tube opening positioned within the chamber, the tube configured to provide fluid communication between the chamber and a vacuum source; and a fluid-permeable body positioned at least partially within the chamber, the fluid-permeable body including a fluid-permeable support and a wicking material, the fluid-permeable support being substantially planar between the opening and the tube opening of the tube, the wicking material covering at least a portion of a side of the fluid-permeable support facing the user's skin; removing a first adhesive cover from a first adhesive region secured to an outer surface of the first portion of the fluid-impermeable barrier, the first adhesive region extending at least partially around the opening such that the first adhesive region is positioned at least partially between the opening and a first side of the fluid-impermeable barrier; adhering the first adhesive area to at least one of the skin of the user's pelvis, pubic bone, or abdomen on a first side of the penis; removing a second adhesive covering from a second adhesive region secured to the outer surface of the first portion of the fluid-impermeable barrier after adhering the first adhesive region to at least one of the skin of the user's pelvis, pubic bone, or abdomen on the first side of the penis, the second adhesive region extending at least partially around the opening such that the second adhesive region is positioned at least partially between the opening and a second side of the fluid-impermeable barrier opposite the first side; and adhering the second adhesive area to at least one of the skin of the user's pelvis, pubic bone, or abdomen on a second side of the penis.
19. 20. The method of claim 18, further comprising withdrawing fluid released in the chamber from the fluid collection device through a tube.

The method of claim 18, removing a first adhesive cover from a first adhesive region secured to an outer surface of the first portion of the fluid-impermeable barrier includes removing the first adhesive cover from the first adhesive region secured to the outer surface of the first portion of the fluid-impermeable barrier between the opening and the first side of the fluid-impermeable barrier and between the opening and a distal end region of the fluid-impermeable barrier; removing a second adhesive cover from a second adhesive region secured to the outer surface of the first portion of the fluid-impermeable barrier comprises removing the second adhesive cover from the second adhesive region secured to the outer surface of the first portion of the fluid-impermeable barrier between the opening and the second side of the fluid-impermeable barrier and between the opening and the distal end region of the fluid-impermeable barrier.
