Abstract
This invention relates to a membrane-based heat exchanger (MemHEX) tailored for tropical climates to address challenges in indoor air quality, thermal comfort, and energy efficiency. The device features a thermally insulated hexagonal housing that optimizes airflow, minimizing turbulence and pressure drop. At its core, a quasicounterflow arrangement of hexagonal plates is integrated with a sandwich-like assembly of expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) membranes and spacers. This design facilitates the efficient transfer of both sensible and latent heat while maintaining separate pathways for exhaust and supply air. The MemHEX includes supply and exhaust fans strategically positioned to ensure uniform airflow across the heat exchanger core. Environmental sensors automate fan operation, regulating ventilation based on real-time conditions such as temperature, humidity, or air quality. The system also includes high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters for pollutant-free operation. Scalable and efficient, the MemHEX is suitable for residential, commercial, and industrial applications.
