A filter system including a method for self cleaning the filter system of an electronic equipment enclosure where air flow is monitored either by monitoring fan performance or air flow velocity through the enclosure. The system includes two filters elements, an upstream ASHRAE or HEPA filter element to block particulate matter and a downstream PTFE filter element to block water vapor. The ASHRAE or HEPA filter element is relatively inexpensive and easy to clean. The PTFE filter element is more expensive and difficult to clean. Thus, the cheaper filter is used to protect the more expensive filter from contaminants and to increase its useful life. The method of self cleaning includes stopping the fan when a signal is received indicating a predetermined resistance to air flow which is a function of blockage of the filter elements, thereafter operating the fan at an increased rotational velocity to determine whether the fan itself is malfunctioning, thereafter slowing and stopping the fan to allow the fan to be reversed, rotating the fan in reverse for a predetermined period of time, such as five minutes, thereafter slowing and stopping the fan and returning the fan to its usual rotational velocity and direction. If the resistance to air flow is still above a predetermined level, the fan is again slowed, stopped and reversed and then returned to normal operation. The reversal operation can be conducted a multiple number of times, however, after a predetermined number, a signal is sent requesting maintenance.

Polycyclonic vacuum collectors for virtually non-stop environmental remediation

A vacuum collector is provided comprising a suction hose, a first drum with a cover having a cylindrical head capable of generating powerful, small-diameter cyclones, a second drum capable of generating large-diameter cyclones, and a stack of three modules containing vacuum-producing motors atop a HEPA filter atop primary filters. The suction hose is connected to the inlet of the small-diameter cyclone-generating head on the cover of the first drum. The stack of modules containing motors, HEPA filter, and primary filters is mounted on the second drum. The two cyclonic drums communicate through a flexible vacuum hose. When the vacuum-producing motors pull air from the interior of the vacuum collector, the suction hose sucks atmospheric air mixed with contaminants from a surface into the head, which spins the contaminant-laden air-stream into a powerful, small-diameter cyclone. As a result of cyclonic action, the contaminant laden air-stream spirals to the bottom of the first drum, deposits most of its contaminants, reverses course, exits the drum, and enters the second drum, where it spins into a large-diameter cyclone, deposits more contaminants, passes through the primary and HEPA filters, and exhausts via the vacuum-producing motors. Collectors comprising more than two communicating cyclonic drums for tailored environmental remediation are also described.

An air conditioner and filtering unit produces a positive or negative pressure to create an isolation space. A common air intake plenum has first and second inlets for admitting return air from the space or outside air which may be from a building main A / C system supply. Sanitized, cleaned and conditioned air is returned to the conditioned space; and condenser air is exhausted outside the conditioned space. The air intake plenum may be common to both the condenser air flow and to the evaporator air flow. A HEPA filter cleans the air suppled to both the condenser and the evaporator. A slide damper or other arrangement selectively opens and closes air flow through the first and second air inlets into the common intake plenum. This permits creation of overpressure, underpressure, or an intermediate pressure in the conditioned space. All air supplied to the room and all air exhausted from the room is cleaned and sanitized. The unit is self-contained and portable.

Through layered filtering and purifying effects of the filter mechanism, indoor air is effectively purified and exhausted out of the air outlet finally.

Total room air purification system with air conditioning, filtration and ventilation

A self-contained air conditioner unit incorporates an energy recovery ventilator portion that brings about several changes of room air per hour with outdoor fresh air. There is an outdoor air intake plenum which furnishes the fresh air and the condenser air for the condenser coil, and a return air plenum. Air from the room return air plenum is HEPA filtered and conducted to the evaporator coil and evaporator fan, and is supplied back into the conditioned space. The energy recovery ventilator has a counterflow heat exchanger core situated between the return air plenum and the fresh air intake plenum, as well as two ventilation fans, one (or both) of which may be of variable or multiple speed. By controlling the fan speeds, it is possible to produce a neutral pressure, a positive or overpressure, or a negative or underpressure in the conditioned space. The unit can be wheeled into place and installed easily by personnel without special training. The unit can be scaled up in size and capacity for a larger room or whole house applications, or scaled down for smaller rooms or window mounting.

The invention is a filter for gaseous media in which nano alumina fibers and second fibers are arranged in a matrix to create asymmetrical pores. The filter is a high efficiency, high capacity particulate filter that intercepts pathogens and other particulate matter from gaseous media, including vapor-suspended particles. The new filter has an improved retention of water-aerosolized particles as compared to conventional HEPA filters and may be used as a pre-filter that extends the life of HEPA filters by about five to ten times.
