[0003] For many people who wear “wigs” or who use hair systems, it is generally desirable to them to have a hair system that is customized to their particular head by, for example, being fitted to cover only those portions of the scalp which are completely or partially lacking in full hair coverage. However, the cost and labor required to provide a unique, custom designed hair system is often prohibitive for users, in terms of cost, time to produce, or both.

[0013] An embodiment of a customizable hair system and method for providing a customizable hair system is illustrated by exemplary method 200 of FIG. 2 and is further described in conjunction with exemplary base 102, shown in FIGS. 1A-1D.
[0014] With reference to FIGS. 1A-1D, the hair system of the present embodiments generally comprises base 102 having a generally convex outer surface and a generally concave inner surface. As may be appreciated, hair system bases, such as base 102, generally may serve as the foundation for attaching hair to create a wig or hair system.
[0015] Base 102 may be shaped in generally any suitable manner sufficient to provide the functionality described herein. In typical embodiments, base 102 may have a dome shape and / or partial hemispherical shape, and is dimensioned so as to be able to fit snugly on a person's head. Base 102 may generally be delineated by a front (first) end 104 and a back (second) end 106 that is aligned along a central longitudinal axis of the dome shape. Front end 104 is positioned distal from back end 106 along this axis. This front-to-back axis establishes the orientation of base 102, with the front end and back end separated by the length of the dome's curvature. The front end and back end thus form the anterior and posterior boundaries of the structure, respectively, spaced apart in a straight-line direction through the dome.
[0016] Base 102 comprises a midsection portion 108 that forms the lower portion of the dome and serves as the foundational cap structure of base 102. Structurally, midsection portion 108 extends upward and inward from a bottom perimeter toward the midsection of the dome. It has a generally annular or frustroconical shape that follows the dome contour along the sides and lower crown area. In some embodiments, midsection portion 108 attenuates in width as it approaches front end 104. Midsection portion 108 includes a continuous or semi-continuous lower border along its bottom edge, which defines the circumference of a bottom opening of the dome (not shown). This bottom opening comprises the open underside of base 102, through which a head would be received in use.
[0017] The lower border of midsection portion 108 may generally comprise a reinforced bottom band 110 that maintains the shape of the opening and the integrity of the dome's perimeter. Bottom band 110 may run circumferentially around the front end, sides, and back end, delineating the boundary of base 102 at its lower extremity. In some embodiments, bottom band 110 may be continuous; in some embodiments it may be interrupted by one or more openings or discontinuities. In some embodiments, bottom band 110 may follow a path that defines one or more geometric elements, such as ear tabs or ear inlets (not shown), etc.
[0018] Bottom band 110 may be comprised of generally any suitable material and have any suitable dimensions sufficient to provide the functionality described herein. For example, in some embodiments, bottom band 110 may be comprised of a polymer material (e.g., polyurethane, silicone, etc.), and may have a width of between about 0.05 inches to about 1 inch; in some embodiments, from about 0.05 inchers to about 0.5 inches. The inner surface of bottom band 110 may serve as a surface to apply adhesive, tape, etc. sufficient to assist in fixing base 102 to a user's scalp.
[0019] Referring still to FIGS. 1A-1D, base 102 comprises topper section 112. In general, topper 112 comprises a substantially dome-shaped crown portion positioned at the uppermost region of base 102. Topper 112 forms the apex of the overall dome configuration, defining the top contour of the structure. In the illustrated embodiment, topper section 112 is generally convex, corresponding to the crown area of a human scalp in shape and curvature. The periphery of topper 112 may be smoothly integrated with adjacent components, providing a continuous transition from the very top of base 102 to the sections below.
[0020] Top band 114 generally comprises an annular, horizontally oriented strip that circumscribes the lower perimeter of topper section 112. It is positioned immediately below topper section 112 and serves as the junction between topper section 112 and midsection portion 108. Geometrically, top band 114 defines a ring-like boundary: its inner edge area is joined to the side and rear circumferential rim of topper 112, and its outer edge area is joined with the upper edge area of midsection portion 108. Top band 114 thus provides a defined transition zone encircling the dome near its apex and ensuring topper section 112 and midsection portion 108 are aligned and connected in a continuous, circular or semi-circular interface.
[0021] Referring still to FIGS. 1A-1D, it may be seen that base 102 may comprise a plurality of midsection bands 116 extending longitudinally between top band 114 and bottom band 110. Structurally, a first (top) end portion of each midsection band 116 is joined to top band 114 and a second (bottom) end portion, that is distal from the first end, of each midsection band 116 is joined to bottom band 110. Thus, top band 114, bottom band 110 and adjacent midsection bands 116 define a cell or section 118, and as may be appreciated, midsection portion 108 generally comprises a plurality of cells 118.
[0022] Top band 114 and each midsection band 116 may be comprised of generally any suitable material and have any suitable dimensions sufficient to provide the functionality described herein. For example, in some embodiments, top band 114 and each midsection band 116 may be comprised of a polymer material (e.g., polyurethane, silicone, etc.), and may have a width of between about 0.05 inches to about 1 inch; in some embodiments, from about 0.05 inchers to about 0.5 inches. The inner surface of top band 114 and / or each midsection band 116 may serve as a surface to apply adhesive, tape, etc. sufficient to assist in fixing base 102 to a user's scalp.
[0023] Topper section 112 and cells 118 may be comprised of generally any suitable materials sufficient to provide the functionality described herein. In some embodiments, topper section 112 and cells 118 are comprised of the same material; in some embodiments, they are comprised of different materials. In some embodiments, the material may be lace (e.g., French or Swiss lace); in some embodiments, the material may be monofilament mesh. Without wishing to be bound by any particular material, in general, lace may comprise a delicate mesh fabric (often made of polyester or nylon) with tiny openings, and monofilament may comprise a mesh made from a single-strand, nylon or poly fiber. In some embodiments, hair is individually hand or machine-tied (knotted) to this netting.Cells and Customization
[0024] As may be appreciated, with reference to FIGS. 1A-1D, each cell 118 Is generally affixed, joined, etc. at each of its longitudinal sides to an edge area of an adjacent midsection band 116, and at its top and bottom edges to an edge area of top band 114 and bottom band 110, respectively forming a continuous surface for base 102. In general, each band (top 114, bottom 110, midsection 116) is dimensioned and configured in relation to each cell 118 (e.g., suitably attached) such that any cell 118 may be removed, as by cutting out with a scissors, etc. without compromising the mechanical integrity of base 102. For example, the foregoing elements are configured such that the removal of one or more cells 118 does not cause the unraveling of the adjacent mesh or otherwise cause base 102 to suitably function in a hair system for a user. In this manner, by permitting the removal of one or more cells 118, a user may customize (or have customized by stylist) base 102 to accommodate any portions of the user's scalp that may not need hair augmentation.
[0025] With reference now to FIG. 2, a method 200 of providing a customized hair system is detailed, according to one or more embodiments disclosed herein. At 202, a customizable base, such as base 102 is provided.
[0026] At 204, a user's scalp is examined for areas of high hair density in the regions of the user's scalp corresponding to the midsection portion 108 of base 102.

1. A customizable hair system comprising:A dome shaped base comprising a topper portion and a midsection portion, wherein the midsection portion comprises a plurality of cells, and wherein each of the plurality of cells is configured to be removable.
2. The customizable hair system of claim 1, wherein the topper portion is comprised of monofilament mesh material and each cell is comprised of lace material.
3. The customizable hair system of claim 1, wherein the topper portion is comprised of lace material and each cell is comprised of lace material.
4. The customizable hair system of claim 1, wherein the topper portion is comprised of monofilament mesh material and each cell is comprised of monofilament mesh material.
5. The customizable hair system of claim 1, wherein a circumferential bottom perimeter of the midsection portion comprises a lower band having a width of between 0.05 inches to 1. Inch.
6. The customizable hair system of claim 5, wherein the lower band is comprised of polyurethane material.
7. A method of providing a customized hair system comprising:Providing a dome shaped base having a topper portion and a midsection portion, wherein the midsection portion comprises a plurality of cells, and wherein each of the plurality of cells is configured to be removable;Examining a user's scalp for areas of high hair density in the regions of the user's scalp corresponding to the midsection portion of the dome shaped base;Identifying at least one cell of the dome shaped base that corresponds to an area of high hair density on the user's scalp;Removing the identified at least one cell from the dome shaped based to create a customized base; andAffixing the customized base to the user's scalp8. The method claim 7, wherein the topper is comprised of monofilament mesh material and each cell is comprised of lace material.
9. The method claim 7, wherein the topper portion is comprised of lace material and each cell is comprised of lace material.
10. The method claim 7, wherein the topper portion is comprised of monofilament mesh material and each cell is comprised of monofilament mesh material.
11. The method claim 7, wherein the circumferential bottom perimeter of the midsection portion comprises a lower band having a width of between 0.05 inches to 1. Inch.
12. The method claim 11, wherein the lower band is comprised of polyurethane material.
