Abstract

A carrier for holding a plurality of containers may comprise an attachment panel and a plurality of container receiving features defined in the attachment panel for at least partially receiving a respective container of the plurality of containers. Each container receiving feature may include a respective container cover panel separably connected to the attachment panel by a connection member. Each cover panel may be positioned to at least partially cover a top portion of a respective container of the plurality of containers. The connection member may be serpentine shaped. The attachment panel may be a first attachment panel with a second attachment panel in at least partial face-to-face contact with the first attachment panel. The second attachment panel may include a second plurality of container receiving features with container receiving openings and container retention tabs.

[0003] The present disclosure generally relates to carriers for holding, displaying, and / or transporting containers.BACKGROUND

[0004] Conventional packaging systems for multiple containers may require separate packaging materials or complex assembly processes that can increase manufacturing costs and handling time. Some conventional carriers may not provide adequate protection for container tops or may lack secure retention features to prevent containers from becoming dislodged during transport or handling.

[0005] Traditional container packaging approaches may also suffer from limited flexibility in accommodating different container sizes or shapes, potentially requiring multiple packaging designs for different product configurations. Existing carriers may not provide convenient handling features such as integrated handles, or may require additional manufacturing steps to incorporate such features. These conventional systems may result in increased material usage, manufacturing complexity, and reduced user convenience when transporting or dispensing multiple containers.SUMMARY OF THE DISCLOSURE

[0006] According to one aspect, the disclosure is generally directed to a carrier for holding a plurality of containers. The carrier may comprise an attachment panel and a plurality of container receiving features defined in the attachment panel for at least partially receiving a respective container of the plurality of containers. Each container receiving feature may include a respective container cover panel separably connected to the attachment panel by a connection member. Each cover panel may be positioned to at least partially cover a top portion of a respective container of the plurality of containers.

[0007] In some embodiments, at least one connection member may be serpentine shaped. The attachment panel may be a first attachment panel and the carrier may further comprise a second attachment panel in at least partial face-to-face contact with the first attachment panel. The method may comprise providing an attachment panel and defining a plurality of container receiving features in the attachment panel for at least partially receiving a respective container of the plurality of containers. Each container receiving feature may include a respective container cover panel separably connected to the attachment panel by a connection member. Each cover panel may be positioned to at least partially cover a top portion of a respective container of the plurality of containers. At least one connection member may be serpentine shaped. The attachment panel may be a first attachment panel and the method may further comprise providing a second attachment panel in at least partial face-to-face contact with the first attachment panel. The plurality of container receiving features may be a first plurality of container receiving features and the method may further comprise defining a second plurality of container receiving features in the second attachment panel for at least partially receiving a respective container of the plurality of containers. Each receiving feature of the second plurality of container receiving features may include a respective container receiving opening. Each receiving feature of the second plurality of container receiving features may include a plurality of container retention tabs arranged to receive and retain a portion of each respective container. The second attachment panel may comprise a first pair of handle tabs and at least one receiving feature of the second plurality of receiving features may include a reinforcement panel in face-to-face contact with the second attachment panel such that a second pair of handle tabs defined in the reinforcement panel may be aligned with the first pair of handle tabs.

For purposes of explanation, specific configurations and details are set forth in order to provide a thorough understanding of the embodiments. However, it will also be apparent to one skilled in the art that the embodiments may be practiced without the specific details. Furthermore, well-known features may be omitted or simplified in order not to obscure the embodiment being described.

[0029] Techniques disclosed herein relate generally to container packaging systems. More specifically, techniques disclosed herein relate to carriers for holding multiple containers that can provide secure container retention with both effective top coverage and convenient handling features. The carriers may include attachment panels with container receiving features that incorporate cover panels connected by connection members to provide container packaging solutions. Various inventive embodiments are described herein, including carriers, blanks, methods of formation, packages, and the like.

[0030] In order to better appreciate the features and aspects of the present disclosure, further context for the disclosure is provided in the following section by discussing one particular implementation of a carrier that includes container receiving features according to embodiments of the disclosure. These embodiments are for explanatory purposes only and other embodiments may be employed in other container packaging applications. For example, embodiments of the disclosure can be used with any carrier that holds or transports beverage containers, food containers, or other consumer product containers. In some instances, embodiments of the disclosure are particularly well suited for use with multi-container packaging systems because of their potentially efficient material usage and secure retention capabilities.

[0031] The present disclosure relates to carrier systems designed to hold and protect multiple beverage containers such as aluminum cans. The carrier may be formed from paperboard blanks that incorporate specialized retention features and protective cover panels. The carrier may provide secure engagement with container flanges through retention tabs that fold into oblique bracing positions. The carrier may simultaneously protect the top surfaces of containers from environmental contaminants including dirt, debris, microbes, and pests through separable cover panels that remain connected to the carrier via flexible connection members.

[0032] The carrier may be configured in multiple embodiments to accommodate different numbers of containers, such as four containers in a two-by-two arrangement or six containers in a two-by-three arrangement. The carrier may include single-ply or multi-ply construction, with certain embodiments incorporating reinforcement panels that create localized three-ply regions for enhanced structural integrity. The carrier may feature integrated handle elements that may be separated and folded to provide convenient carrying capability. The retention tabs may be positioned at various radial positions around container receiving openings and may deflect upwardly to engage container flanges when containers are inserted through the openings.

[0033] The cover panels may be initially positioned to obscure the container retention openings in the blank form. The cover panels may separate from the attachment panel along curved cuts when containers are inserted, while remaining connected through arm-like connection members that may flex, fold, or twist to accommodate cover panel displacement. The cover panels may then rest atop the container top surfaces within the container flange boundaries to provide a hygienic barrier. The carrier may thus maintain container cleanliness throughout distribution, display, and handling until individual containers are removed by consumers. The multi-ply embodiments may provide additional structural strength through overlapped attachment panels and reinforcement panels that may resist tearing and deformation during package handling and transportation.

[0034] The present disclosure generally relates to carriers, packages, constructs, sleeves, cartons, or the like, for holding and displaying containers such as jars, bottles, cans, etc. The containers can be used for packaging food and beverage products, for example. The containers can be made from materials suitable in composition for packaging the particular food or beverage item, and the materials include, but are not limited to, glass; plastics such as PET, LDPE, LLDPE, HDPE, PP, PS, PVC, EVOH, and Nylon; and the like; aluminum and / or other metals; or any combination thereof.

[0035] Packages according to the present disclosure can accommodate containers of numerous different shapes. For the purpose of illustration and not for the purpose of limiting the scope of the disclosure, the following detailed description describes beverage containers (e.g., generally cylindrical containers such as aluminum cans) at least partially disposed within the package embodiments. In this specification, the terms “lower,”“bottom,”“upper” and “top” indicate orientations determined in relation to fully erected packages.

[0036] FIG. 1A is a plan view of an exterior surface 101 of a blank 103 for forming a carrier 105 (FIG. 3) according to a first embodiment of the disclosure. FIGS. 1B and 1C are enlarged views of portions of the blank 103. As described further herein, the carrier 105 can be configured for holding / supporting / retaining / receiving a plurality of containers. In some embodiments, the flange portion F can have the form of a rolled rim or chime for being engaged by one or more portions of the carrier 105 / package 107, as described further herein. In one embodiment, the axis L1 can be a lateral axis and the axis L2 can be a longitudinal axis.

[0056] Accordingly, the container cover panels 133 can be provided to offer protection and at least partial concealment of upper portions of the containers C from a surrounding environment so as to maintain a hygienic condition of the containers C prior to removal from the carrier 105 by a user.

2. The carrier of claim 1, wherein at least one connection member is serpentine shaped.

3. The carrier of claim 1, wherein the attachment panel is an upper attachment panel and the carrier further comprises a lower attachment panel in at least partial face-to-face contact with the upper attachment panel.

The carrier of claim 2, wherein the plurality of container receiving features is a first plurality of container receiving features and the carrier further comprises a second plurality of container receiving features defined in the lower attachment panel for at least partially receiving a respective container of the plurality of containers.

5. The carrier of claim 4, wherein each receiving feature of the second plurality of container receiving features includes a respective container receiving opening.

6. The carrier of claim 5, wherein each receiving feature of the second plurality of container receiving features includes a plurality of container retention tabs arranged to receive and retain a portion of each respective container.

The carrier of claim 5, wherein the lower attachment panel comprises a first pair of handle tabs and wherein at least one container receiving feature of the second plurality of container receiving features includes a reinforcement panel in face-to-face contact with the lower attachment panel such that a second pair of handle tabs defined in the reinforcement panel is aligned with the first pair of handle tabs.

A blank for forming a carrier for holding a plurality of containers, the blank comprising:an attachment panel; anda plurality of container receiving features defined in the attachment panel for at least partially receiving a respective container of the plurality of containers, wherein each container receiving feature includes a respective container cover panel separably connected to the attachment panel by a connection member, wherein each cover panel is positioned to at least partially cover a top portion of a respective container of the plurality of containers.

9. The blank of claim 8, wherein at least one connection member is serpentine shaped.

10. The blank of claim 8, wherein the attachment panel is an upper attachment panel and the blank further comprises a lower attachment panel in at least partial face-to-face contact with the upper attachment panel.

The blank of claim 10, wherein the plurality of container receiving features is a first plurality of container receiving features and the blank further comprises a second plurality of container receiving features defined in the lower attachment panel for at least partially receiving a respective container of the plurality of containers.

A method for forming a carrier for holding a plurality of containers, the method comprising:providing an attachment panel; anddefining a plurality of container receiving features in the attachment panel for at least partially receiving a respective container of the plurality of containers, wherein each container receiving feature includes a respective container cover panel separably connected to the attachment panel by a connection member, wherein each cover panel is positioned to at least partially cover a top portion of a respective container of the plurality of containers.

16. The method of claim 15, wherein at least one connection member is serpentine shaped.

17. The method of claim 15, wherein the attachment panel is an upper attachment panel and the method further comprises providing a lower attachment panel in at least partial face-to-face contact with the upper attachment panel.

The method of claim 17, wherein the plurality of container receiving features is a first plurality of container receiving features and the method further comprises defining a second plurality of container receiving features in the lower attachment panel for at least partially receiving a respective container of the plurality of containers.

19. The method of claim 18, wherein each receiving feature of the second plurality of container receiving features includes a respective container receiving opening.

20. The method of claim 19, wherein each receiving feature of the second plurality of container receiving features includes a plurality of container retention tabs arranged to receive and retain a portion of each respective container.

A package comprising:a carrier for holding a plurality of containers; andthe plurality of containers held by the carrier, wherein the carrier comprises:an attachment panel; anda plurality of container receiving features defined in the attachment panel for atleast partially receiving a respective container of the plurality of containers, wherein eachcontainer receiving feature includes a respective container cover panel separablyconnected to the attachment panel by a connection member, wherein each cover panel ispositioned to at least partially cover a top portion of a respective container of the pluralityof containers.

23. The package of claim 22, wherein at least one connection member is serpentine shaped.

24. The package of claim 22, wherein the attachment panel is an upper attachment panel and the carrier further comprises a lower attachment panel in at least partial face-to-face contact with the upper attachment panel.

The package of claim 24, wherein the plurality of container receiving features is a first plurality of container receiving features and the carrier further comprises a second plurality of container receiving features defined in the lower attachment panel for at least partially receiving a respective container of the plurality of containers.

26. The package of claim 25, wherein each receiving feature of the second plurality of container receiving features includes a respective container receiving opening.
