Abstract
Description
[0001] Botanical classification: Scabiosa columbaria.
[0002] Variety denomination: ‘Lier 01’.CROSS-REFERENCE TO A RELATED APPLICATION
[0003] This application claims priority to European Community Plant Variety Office (CPVO) Plant Breeder's Rights Application No. 2024 / 3208 filed on Dec. 20, 2024, under 35 U.S.C. 119(f), the entire contents of which is incorporated by reference herein.BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
[0004] The present invention relates to a new and distinct cultivar of Scabiosa columbaria botanically known as Scabiosa ‘Lier 01’ and will be referred to hereinafter by its cultivar name, ‘Lier 01’. The new cultivar of Scabiosa is an herbaceous perennial grown for use as a landscape plant.
[0005] The new cultivar was discovered by the Inventor in September of 2019 as a naturally occurring branch mutation of Scabiosa ‘Butterfly Blue’ (not patented) that was growing in a container in an active greenhouse in Meijel, the Netherlands.
[0006] Asexual propagation of the new cultivar was first accomplished by the Inventor by stem cuttings in September of 2019 in Meijel, The Netherlands. Asexual propagation by stem cuttings has determined that the characteristics of the new cultivar are stable and are reproduced true to type in successive generations.SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
[0007] The following traits have been repeatedly observed and are determined to be the characteristics of ‘Lier 01’. These characteristics in combination distinguish ‘Lier 01’ as a new and distinct cultivar of Scabiosa.
[0008] 1. ‘Lier 01’ exhibits compact plant habit.
[0009] 2. ‘Lier 01’ exhibits a floriferous blooming habit.
[0010] 3. ‘Lier 01’ exhibits dark blue flowers.
[0011] 4. ‘Lier 01’ exhibits a moderate growth habit.
[0012] Butterfly Blue differs form ‘Lier 01’ in having a less compact plant habit, lighter blue flowers, and a less floriferous blooming habit. ‘Lier 01’ can be most closely compared to the Scabiosa cultivars ‘Pincushion Blue’ (not patented) and ‘Mariposa Blue’ (not patented). Both ‘Pincushion Blue’ and ‘Mariposa Blue’ are similar to ‘Lier 01’ in having blue colored flowers. ‘Pincushion Blue’ differs from ‘Lier 01’ in having a less compact plant habit and leaflets that are narrower, and in blooming later in the season. ‘Mariposa Blue’ differs from ‘Lier 01’ in having a less compact plant habit, more flowers per inflorescence, and a less floriferous blooming habit.STATEMENT REGARDING PRIOR DISCLOSURES BY THE INVENTOR
[0013] The Applicant asserts that no publications or advertisements relating to sales, offers for sale, or public distribution occurred more than one year prior to the effective filing date of this application. Any information about the claimed plant would have been obtained from a direct or indirect disclosure from the Inventor. The Applicant claims a prior art exemption under 35 U.S.C. 102(b)(1) for disclosures and / or sales that fall within a one-year grace period to the filing date. Disclosures include website listings by Van Vliet New Plants, Floral Daily, Plantarium Groen Direkt, HoticultureWeek, Flora Viva, Gabot, Nova, Kientzier, griffin Greenhouse Supplies, Albert Garden, and My News Week.BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
[0014] The accompanying color photographs illustrate the overall appearance and distinct characteristics of a 6-month-old plant of the new Scabiosa as grown outdoors in a 17-cm container in Boskoop, The Netherlands.
[0015] The photograph in FIG. 1 provides a side view of ‘Lier 01’ in bloom.
[0016] The photograph in FIG. 2 provides a close-up view of the foliage of ‘Lier 01’.
[0017] The photograph in FIG. 3 provides a close-up view of an inflorescence of ‘Lier 01’.
[0018] The colors in the photographs may differ slightly from the color values cited in the detailed botanical description, which accurately describes the colors of the new Scabiosa. DETAILED BOTANICAL DESCRIPTION
