Description

IP PATH REACHABILITY UPDATINGFIELD

[0001] Various example embodiments relate to the field of telecommunications and in particular, to a network device, a communication device, methods, apparatuses and a computer readable storage medium for updating IP path reachability information of a wireless communication system.BACKGROUND

[0002] In the field of telecommunications, a wireless communication network, such as wireless communication network comprising a 5th generation wireless communication system (5GS) , may be part of a computer network and used to transmit and receive packets to and / or from devices of the computer network. For example, devices of a local area network (LAN) connected to at least one terminal device of a wireless communication system (e.g., the network behind the at least one terminal device of the wireless communication network) may be reachable via multiple PDU sessions in the wireless communication network for IP packet transmission.

[0003] Deterministic Networking (DetNet) as proposed by the IETF operates at the IP and Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) layers and provides time-sensitive features that guarantee almost zero packet loss rates and bounded latency. In Release 18 of the 3GPP standard for NR, a study item referred to as FS_DetNet “Extensions to the TSC Framework to support DetNet” (SP-211633, New SID: Extensions to the TSC Framework to support DetNet) , considers 5GS acting as one of the DetNet nodes in a certain portion of a network that is DetNet aware. As defined in RFC 8655, a DetNet node can be a DetNet edge node, a DetNet relay node, or a DetNet transit node, while it is out of scope to support for edge DetNet node functions described in Release 18 of the 3GPP standard for NR. The DetNet integration solution in 5GS should reuse the functionality of the TSC (Time Sensitive Communications) framework defined in Release 17 of 3GPP standard for NR where applicable. The study results are captured in the Technical Report (TR) 23.700-46 (Study on 5GS DetNet interworking) . In Release 18 of the 3GPP standard for NR, a work item, referred to as DetNet “Extensions to the TSC Framework to support DetNet” (SP-220801, New WID: Extensions to the TSC Framework to support DetNet) , normative work results are captured in the Technical Specifications TS 23.501, TS 23.502 and TS 23.503 of the  3GPP standard for NR.SUMMARY

[0048] The term “terminal device” refers to any end device of a wireless communication system that may be capable of wireless communication. By way of example rather than limitation, a terminal device may also be referred to as a communication device, user equipment (UE) , a Subscriber Station (SS) , a Portable Subscriber Station, a Mobile Station (MS) , or an Access Terminal (AT) . The terminal device may include, but not limited to, a mobile phone, a cellular phone, a smart phone, voice over IP (VoIP) phones, wireless local loop phones, a tablet, a wearable terminal device, a personal digital assistant (PDA) , portable computers, desktop computer, image capture terminal devices such as digital cameras, gaming terminal devices, music storage and playback appliances, vehicle-mounted wireless terminal devices, wireless endpoints, mobile stations, laptop-embedded equipment (LEE) , laptop-mounted equipment (LME) , USB dongles, smart devices, wireless customer-premises equipment (CPE) , an Internet of Things (loT) device, a watch or other wearable, a head-mounted display (HMD) , a vehicle, a drone, a medical device and applications (e.g., remote surgery) , an industrial device and applications (e.g., a robot and / or other wireless devices operating in an industrial and / or an automated processing chain contexts) , a consumer electronics device, a device operating on commercial and / or industrial wireless networks, and the like. In the following description, the terms “terminal device” , “communication device” , “terminal” , “user equipment” and “UE” may be used interchangeably.

[0049] As noted above, a wireless communication system, such as a 5GS, may act as DetNet node in a certain part of a network that is DetNet aware. Currently, the network behind the one or more terminal devices (e.g., UEs) of the communication system) can only be manually configured via framed routes or prefixed delegated to the UE by IPv6 prefix delegation. Mechanisms of framed routes and IPv6 prefix delegation are defined in TS 23.501 and TS 29.244.

[0050] In order to more clearly describe the embodiments of the present disclosure, the related technologies are first introduced. The SMF (Session Management Function) of system 100 controls user-plane packet forwarding for UL and DL (downlink) via packet  processing rules. In one example, the traffic is detected by a Packet Detection Rule (PDR) by providing a Forwarding Action Rule (FAR) with instructions to the UPF (User Plane Function) . Other packet processing rules are defined in 3GPP TS 23.501 and not described in this disclosure. The UPF can forward the received IP packets to PDU session (s) based on IP address / prefix provided to UE or IPv6 Prefix delegated to the UE or framed routes associated to a PDU session. The SMF establishes and updates the packet processing rules applied in the UPF via N4 session signaling.

[0051] In Release 18 of the 3GPP standard for NR, there is a study item entitled FS_DetNet (Deterministic Networking) “Extensions to the TSC Framework to support DetNet” (SP-211633, New SID: Extensions to the TSC Framework to support DetNet) , considers 5GS acting as one of the DetNet) nodes in the DetNet domain. The results of the study item are described in the Technical Report (TR) 23.700-46 (TR 23.700-46, Study on 5GS DetNet interworking) .

[0052] The SID noted above agreed to following points as way forward (TR 23.700-46, Study on 5GS DetNet interworking) .

[0053] The TSCTSF (Time Sensitive Communication Time Synchronization Function) of the 5GS terminates the interface towards the DetNet controller. The TSCTSF collects and provides exposure information to the DetNet controller. The TSCTSF collects the information from the UPF / NW-TT (Network Side TSN translator) and the SMF with extensions to the 5GC data models or information elements as required. Existing procedures in Release 17 of the 3GPP standard for NR related to TSC are reused by the TSCTSF to collect such information.

[0054] The entity which reports UPF N6 interface related information to the TSCTSF is NW-TT as described in Release 17 of the 3GPP standard for NR related to TSC.

[0055] Based on existing 3GPP specifications for NR (TS 23.501, TS 23.502) , a wireless communication network comprising a wireless communication system acting as a DetNet node (generally referred to herein as a 5GS DetNet node) can forward via its UE side interface IP packets destined not only to the UE’s IP address or prefix but also to other IP prefixes according to 3GPP framed routes or prefixes delegated to the UE by IPv6 prefix delegation. To facilitate this, the additional IP addresses used for framed routes and IPv6 prefix delegation are exposed by the SMF of the 5GS to the TSCTSF of the 5GS and further by TSCTSF to the DetNet controller.

[0056] In Release 18 of the 3GPP standard for NR, the work item entitled DetNet “Extensions to the TSC Framework to support DetNet” (SP-220801, New WID: Extensions to the TSC Framework to support DetNet) resulted in normative work which are captured in the 3GPP Technical Specifications TS 23.501, TS 23.502 and TS 23.503.

[0057] According to embodiments of the present disclosure, there is provided a solution for updating IP path reachability information in a wireless communication system. A network behind the UE and / or the UPF may be reachable via one or more PDU sessions. Each PDU session is an IP path for IP traffic forwarding and routing within the wireless communication system. Principles and embodiments of the present disclosure will be described in detail below with reference to the accompanying drawings.

[0058] Reference is first made to Fig. 1A, which illustrates an example wireless communication system 100 (generally referred to as “system 100” hereinafter) in which embodiments of the present disclosure may be implemented. System 100 shown in Fig. 1A includes a terminal device 110, a radio access network (RAN) 130 (e.g., a base station or gNB) of a radio access network (RAN) , and a core network 120 (e.g., a 5th generation core network (5GC) ) . The terminal device 110 in Fig. 1A is shown accessing or communicating with the core network 120 directly or via the RAN node 130. Although Fig. 1A shows only a single terminal device 110 and a single RAN node 120, it will be appreciated that the system 100 may include any number of terminal devices 110 accessing or communicating with the core network 120 directly or via the RAN nodes 130. System 100 may include a control plane comprising control plane entities and a user plane comprising user plane entities as described in further detail below.

[0059] System 100 may include a plurality of network entities. A network entity may be a user plane entity (e.g., a network entity of the user plane of the system 100) or a control plane entity (a network entity of the user plane of the system 100) . A user plane entity may be a RAN node 130 or a network device comprising or implementing one or more user plane functions (UPFs) of the core network 120. A control plane entity may be a network device of the core network 120 comprising or implementing one or more network functions of the core network 120 (e.g., a SMF, a PCF, etc. ) . The network functions of the core network 120 and their functionalities are well known to a person skilled in the art and are not described in detail. The UPF of a core network 120 and its functionalities are well known to a person skilled in the art and are thus not described in detail.

[0060] Although system 100 shown in Fig. 1A includes only one RAN node 130, it will be appreciated that system 100 a may also include a plurality of RAN nodes 130 of one RAN or a plurality of RAN nodes 130 of multiple RANs of the system 100. In some examples, the core network 120 may transmit information (e.g., configuration information) to the terminal device 110 via any RAN node 130 serving the terminal device 110. In some embodiments, system 100 may be an example of the first communication system, or as a part of the first communication system. The terminal device 110 may be connected to one or more devices in a second communication system different from system 100, as shown in Fig. 1B and 1C.

[0061] Communications in the system 100 may be implemented according to any proper communication protocol (s) , comprising, but not limited to, cellular communication protocols of the first generation (1G) , the second generation (2G) , the third generation (3G) , the fourth generation (4G) and the fifth generation (5G) and on the like, wireless local network communication protocols such as Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.11 and the like, and / or any other protocols currently known or to be developed in the future. Moreover, the communication may utilize any proper wireless communication technology, comprising but not limited to: Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) , Frequency Division Multiple Access (FDMA) , Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) , Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) , Time Division Duplex (TDD) , Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) , Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple (OFDM) , Discrete Fourier Transform spread OFDM (DFT-s-OFDM) and / or any other technologies currently known or to be developed in the future.

[0062] In 3GGP TR 23.700.46, methods are described where the TSCTSF learns or obtains the 5GS DetNet Node IP routing and / or forwarding information from control plane entities or user plane entities. The TSCTSF may learn or obtain information about static routes or information about dynamic routes obtained by UE / DS-TT (Device Side TSN translator) and / or UPF / NW-TT. The described methods only treat the routes updates needed to be exposed by the TSCTSF to DetNet controller, which does not address the general issue of IP routing updates .

[0063] The QoS monitoring mechanism defined in 3GPP TS 23.501 allows a 5GS to measure packet delay between UE and a UPF which is a PSA (PDU Session Anchor) subject to the operators' configuration, and / or a request from 3rd party application function, and / or a policy for the URLLC services provided by the PCF. The packet delay  measurement can be performed and activated by the SMF on different levels of granularity, i.e., per QoS flow per UE or per GTP-U tunnel. The QoS monitoring mechanism is only used for optimizing control plane (CP) processing, the UPF computes or calculates the packet delay between UE and the UPF which is PSA (PDU Session Anchor) to SMF and SMF further reports the calculated packet delay to the PCF. The PCF then reports the measured packet delay as QoS monitoring results to the AF as a subscribed event (e.g., an event for which the AF subscribe to receive notifications for) .

[0064] Some embodiments of the present disclosure provide in a scenario in which, within the generic redundant IP paths via multiple PDU sessions, a mechanism for the 5GS learn or obtain the updated IP path status information for the redundant IP paths, variances in the performance of the redundant IP paths, and further updates the IP reachability information for the redundant IP paths quickly and reliably based on learnt IP path status information and variances in the performance of the redundant IP paths.

[0065] Fig. 1B illustrates an example of a system (e.g., system 100 of Fig. 1A where system 100 is a 5GS) connecting two local area networks to a data network. As shown in Fig. 1B, the 5GS includes two PDU sessions are shown as an example. Both IP path 1 and IP path 2 provide IP reachability to local area networks behind the UEs (e.g., UE1 and UE2) and the data network behind the UPFs (e.g., UFP1 and UPF2) . UPF1 is the anchor UPF for both UE1 and UE2. This means that the same (range of) IP prefix and / or IP subnet can be reachable via two separate IP paths. The IP path 1 and the IP path 2 provide redundant IP paths via these two PDU sessions and thus provide back-up IP paths, simultaneous IP paths for load-balancing or for any other requirements needed for IP traffic steering. Fig. 1C illustrates an example of a system (e.g., system 100 of Fig. 1A where system 100 is a 5GS) connecting two local area networks to a data network via multiple UPFs (two UPFs are shown as an example) . Which PDU sessions involved in the redundant IP paths is known knowledge in 5GS. The redundant IP paths may go through the same UPF (as shown in Fig. 1B) or via different UPFs (as shown in Fig. 1C) . It should be noted that the methods and apparatus of the present disclosure which are described with respect to two IP paths as an example, are applicable to multiple IP paths. The 5GC control plane entity may include at least one of SMF (Session Management Function) , PCF, or TSCTSF.

[0066] With reference to Fig. 1A, Fig. 1B and Fig. 1C, the terminal device of the first  communication system (e.g., system 100) may be connected to one or more devices in a second communication system. The first communication system may comprise the 5GS shown in Fig. 1B or Fig. 1C. The second communication system may comprise one or more computer networks (e.g., one or more local area networks, such as LAN1 and LAN2 shown in Fig. 1B or Fig. 1C) .

[0067] In system 100 of the present disclosure, it is assumed that both user plane entities and control plane entities are aware of the PDU sessions involved in the redundant IP paths (e.g., IP path1, IP path2) . The IP path in 5GS includes user plane entities providing a radio connection, a N3 connection and PDU session. For user plane entities, e.g., UE1 and UE2, or UPF1 and UPF2, one entity is the redundant entity of the other entity. Redundant IP paths may use different RAN nodes or share the same RAN node. Methods defined in 3GPP TS 23.501 clause 5.33.2 and Annex F can be used to achieve redundant RAN nodes. To simply description of the present disclosure, a redundant RAN node in the present disclosure without losing generalization. Overlapping PDR rules applied for more than one PDU sessions belong to different UEs. Packet processing rules include at least one of rules configured by SMF to UPF (i.e., PDR, FAR (Forwarding Action Rule) , Session Reporting Rules (SRR) , Buffer Action Rule (BAR) , QoS Enforcement Rule (QER) and Usage Reporting Rule (URR) ) . IP status information is any information related to the status of any user plane entities in an IP path in the 5GS.

[0068] Fig. 2A illustrates a flowchart illustrating a method 200-1 for updating IP path reachability information according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. Method 200-1 may be carried out by or performed by a network entity. The method begins at 210, where Internet Protocol (IP) path status information is obtained from at least one network entity of a first communication system. In some embodiments, the network entity may be a control plane entity in the first communication system. In some other embodiments, the network entity may be a user plane entity in the first communication system. For these examples, the network entity may refer to a network entity (e.g., user plane entity or control plane entity) of the system 100 shown in Fig. 1A. As an example, the first communication system may be system 100 shown in Fig. 1A. As noted above the system 100 (e.g., a 5GS) comprises, for example, at least one terminal device (e.g., UE) 110, at least one radio access network (RAN) node 130 of a RAN, a core network 120 comprising at least one user plane entity comprising or implementing at least one user plane function (UPF) , and a plurality of control plane entities of the core network (generally referred to as 5GC-CP entities) . The  5GC-CP entities may comprise or implement one or more network functions of the control plane of the 5GC.

[0069] First, some embodiments in which the network entity is a control plane entity will be described below. In some examples, a control plane entity may be any device (e.g., a computer system or computing device) that implements or comprises one or more network functions of the control plane of system 100 (e.g., network functions of the 5GS) . The control plane entity may obtain the IP path status information in various ways, such as, the network entity (e.g., the control plane entity) may obtain the IP path status information locally, from any AF communicating with the 5GS or that is part of the 5GS, or from one or more user plane entities associated with the plurality of IP paths. The details regarding the control plane entity obtaining IP status information will be described in further detail below.

[0070] In some embodiments, the IP path status information may comprise a plurality of path selection rules for the plurality of IP paths, and the network entity (e.g., the control plane entity) may obtain the plurality of path selection rules for the plurality of IP paths based on subscription information of the at least one terminal device 110 of the first communication system, additionally or alternatively, a local policy pre-configured at the control plane entity. In some other embodiments, the control plane entity may receive the IP path status information from one or more other entities, such as at least one terminal device 110 of the first communication system, an application function (AF) of the first communication system, a radio access network (RAN) node 130 (e.g., a base station or gNB) of the RAN of the first communication system, and one or more user plane functions (UPFs) of the first communication system.

[0071] When the network entity is a control plane entity, specifically, in some examples of receiving the IP path status information from the at least one terminal device 110, the IP path status information may comprise information indicative of a change to a radio connection between the at least one terminal device 110 and the RAN node130 of the first communication system. In some examples of receiving the IP path status information from the AF, the IP path status information may comprise information about an IP routing influence (referred to hereinafter as IP routing influence information) . The IP routing influence information may be included in the IP path status information. The IP routing influence information indicates the AF’s IP routing request or preference to influence 5GC-CP IP traffic steering processing decisions for traffic of a PDU Session. In some examples of receiving the IP path status information from the RAN device 130, the IP path  status information may comprise a notification of a change to a radio connection between the terminal device 110 and the RAN device 130, or quality of service (QoS) notification control (QNC) indication when the Guaranteed Flow Bit Rate (GFBR) can no longer (or can again) be guaranteed for a QoS Flow during the lifetime of the QoS Flow, or an alternative QoS profile index of a QoS flow associated with the at least one IP path, or congestion information of a QoS flow associated with the at least one IP path, or a plurality thereof. In some examples of receiving the IP path status information from the one or more UPFs, the IP path status information may comprise QoS monitoring report, event or report provided by a plurality of packet processing rules, or congestion information encapsulated in traffic data, or a plurality thereof.

[0072] As mentioned above, in some other embodiments, the network entity may be the user plane entity in the first communication system. Some embodiments in which the network entity is the user plane entity will be described below.

[0073] In some examples, the user plane entity may be a device (e.g., a computing device or computing system) that implements or comprises one or more UPFs of the 5GS. The user plane entity may obtain the IP path status information in various ways, for example, the user plane entity may detect a change to the IP path status information locally (e.g., the user plane entity itself may detect a change to the IP status information or the user plane entity may receive the IP path status information from a control plane entity or from other user plane entities.

[0074] In some embodiments, the user plane entity may detect, at the user plane entity, a change of the IP path status information via event or report provided by a plurality of packet processing rules configured, or congestion information encapsulated in traffic data, or via both of them. In some other embodiments, the user plane entity may receive the IP path status information from one or more of a terminal device 110 of the first communication system, a radio access network (RAN) device 130 of a RAN of the first communication system, or a control plane entity of the first communication system.

[0075] When the network entity is the user plane entity, specifically, in some examples of receiving the IP path status information from the at least one terminal device 110, the IP path status information may comprise a status of a radio connection between the at least one terminal device 110 and the RAN device 130, or a change of performance information between the at least one terminal device 110 and the RAN device 130, or a change of  congestion information encapsulated in traffic data, or a change of performance measurements between the at least one terminal device 110 and a UPF of the first communication system, or a plurality thereof. In some examples, the performance measurements between the at least one terminal device 110 and a UPF of the first communication system is performed by using Performance Management Functionality (PMF) protocol as defined in 3GPP TS 23.501. In some examples of receiving the IP path status information from the RAN device 130, the IP path status information may comprise QoS monitoring measurement result of the radio connection associated with the at least one IP path. In some examples of receiving the IP path status information from the control plane device, the IP path status information may comprise a plurality of path selection rules based on subscription information of the at least one terminal device 110 of the first communication system, or based on local policy pre-configured at the control plane device, or based on both subscription information of the least one terminal device 100 of the first communication system and the local policy pre-configured at the control plane device.

[0076] For the network device is the control plane device or the user plane device, based on the IP path status information, the network device may determine (220) , that a change to at least one IP path among a plurality of IP paths is required. Each of the plurality of IP paths may be for IP traffic forwarding within the first communication system. Furthermore, based on determining that the change is required, the network device may update (230) IP path reachability information for the at least one IP path, the IP path reachability information indicating that one or more devices of a second communication system connected to at least one terminal device 110 of the first communication system is reachable via the at least one IP path. In some examples, the IP traffic is an ongoing IP traffic forwarded within the first communication system, or a new incoming traffic to be forwarded within the first communication system, or a future traffic to be forwarded within the first communication system, or a plurality thereof. With reference to Fig. 1B or Fig. 1C, in some examples, the device of the second communication system may be a device in the LAN1 or the LAN2.

[0077] The IP path reachability information may be associated with IP path switchover from a first IP path to a second IP path of the at least one IP path, or weight factor adjustment of the at least one IP path, or change of duplication decision for an IP traffic via the at least one IP path, or IP traffic steering processing required by an AF, or a plurality thereof.

[0078] In case the network entity is the control plane entity or the user plane entity, the network entity may determine, based on the updated IP path reachability information, updated weight factor or updated duplication indication of the at least one IP path, or both the updated weight factor and updated duplication indication of the at least one IP path.

[0079] Take a scenario of IP path switching as an example, for the embodiments in which network entity is the user plane entity, the user plane entity may transmit, to a control plane entity, a notification of an update to the IP path reachability information, and receive, from the control plane entity, at least one updated IP parameter of the at least one IP path.

[0080] Take a scenario of load balancing or packet duplication as an example, for the embodiments in which network entity is the user plane entity, the user plane entity may update, based on the updated weight factor, based on updated duplication indication, or based on both the updated weight factor or duplication indication or both of them of the at least one IP path. In some embodiments, the user plane entity may also determine whether to reduce and / or increase cost and / or priority. In addition, similar to the scenario of path switching, in the scenario of load balancing or packet duplication, in some examples, the user plane entity may also transmit, to a control plane entity, a notification of an update to the IP path reachability information, and receive, from the control plane entity, at least one updated IP parameter of the at least one IP path.

[0081] For the embodiments in which the network entity obtains the IP path status information from the terminal device (s) 110 of the first communication system or the user plane entity of the first communication system, the terminal device 110 or the user plane entity may each be referred to as a communication device.

[0082] With reference to Fig. 2B, Fig. 2B illustrates a flowchart illustrating a method 200-2 for updating IP path reachability information according to some other embodiments of the present disclosure, in these embodiments, as shown in flowchart of the method 200-2 in Fig. 2B, the communication device 204 may determine (201) the IP path status information 215 for determining that a change to at least one IP path among the plurality of IP paths is required. Each of the plurality of IP paths may be for IP traffic forwarding within the first communication system. Then, the communication device 204 may transmit (203) , to the network entity 202 of the first communication system, the IP path status information 215. The network entity 202 may obtain (specifically, receive) (205) the IP path status information 215 from the communication device 204, where for example, the  communication device 204 is the terminal device 110 of the first communication system or a user plane entity of the first communication system.

[0083] For the embodiments in which the communication device 204 is a terminal device 110, in some examples, the network entity 202 may be a control plane entity, or in some other examples, the network entity 202 may be a user plane entity. The details of the network entity 202 (the control plane entity or the user plane entity) receiving the IP path status information 215 from the terminal device 110 have been described above, so the specific information comprised in the IP path status information 215 will not be repeated here.

[0084] For the embodiments in which the communication device 204 is a user plane entity, the network entity 202 may be the control plane entity. The details of the control plane entity receiving the IP path status information 215 from the user plane device have been described above, so the specific information comprised in the IP path status information 215 will not be repeated here.

[0085] With continued reference to Fig. 2A, as mentioned above, the network entity 202 may update IP path reachability information 225 for the at least one IP path. With continued reference to Fig. 2B, in some embodiments, for example, the network entity 202 may be a control plane entity, and the network entity 202 may transmit (207) the updated IP path reachability information 225 to the communication device 204 (such as at least one user plane entity (e.g. UPF) of the first communication system, or at least one terminal device 110 of the first communication system, or both of them above) . The communication device 204 (e.g., the terminal device 110 or the UPF) may receive (209) from the network entity202, the IP path reachability information (i.e., the updated IP path reachability information 225) for the at least one IP path for the IP traffic forwarding.

[0086] In some embodiments, for example in a scenario of path switching, or a scenario of load balancing or packet duplication, the network entity 202 (e.g. a control plane entity) may transmit, to the communication device 204 (e.g. a terminal device 110 or a user plane entity, for example a user plane entity comprising or implement a user plane function) , at least one updated IP parameter for updating at least one IP parameter for the at least one IP path. Accordingly, the communication device 204 may receive, from the network entity 202, the at least one updated IP parameter. In some other embodiments, for example in a scenario of load balancing or packet duplication, the network entity 202 (e.g., a control  plane entity) may transmit, to the communication device 204 (e.g., a user plane entity) , at least one of updated weight factor or updated duplication indication for updating at least one of weight factor or duplication indication for the at least one IP path. Accordingly, the communication device 204 may receive, from the network entity 202, the updated weight factor or the updated duplication indication.

[0087] Some embodiments of the present disclosure propose a new method for the 5GS to jointly determine updates to IP path reachability information among known PDU sessions, which provide redundant IP paths within the 5GS to a network behind UE and / or UPF. The updated IP path reachability information is determined by the 5GS based on each IP path status information 215 learnt or obtained from any network entities of any known redundant IP paths. For example, one of the 5GS control plane entities associated with the redundant IP paths, may learn or obtain an update to IP status information due to a change toto subscription information of the at least one UE, a change to local policy or due to any update to IP traffic steering processing request or preferences from AF via IP routing influence requirement. According to the method proposed, the 5GS comprises a mechanism to learn or obtain the updated IP path status information and performance variances of the IP paths (e.g., variances in the performance of the IP paths) . The IP reachability information for the IP paths (e.g., the IP reachability of the IP paths) may be updated quickly and reliably.

[0088] As mentioned above, the network entity 202 may obtain IP path status information 215 from at least one network entity (e.g., control plane entity or user plane entity) of the first communication system. The at least one network entity may comprise a plurality of network entities including, for example, a terminal device 110, a radio access network (RAN) node 130, a user plane function (UPF) , an application function (AF) and a 5G Core network-control plane (5GC-CP) function. It should be noted that one IP path is a redundant IP path of the other IP path among a plurality of IP paths. In the embodiments of the present disclosure, for two or more IP paths, each of the plurality of IP paths may also be referred to as a redundant IP path, and a plurality of the IP paths may also be referred to as the plurality of redundant IP paths. The details of the methods and apparatuses the present disclosure will be further described below.

[0089] For some examples in which the network entity 202 is a control plane entity, specifically, the network device 202 may be a control plane entity of the 5GC-CP (generally referred to as a 5GC-CP entity) . The 5GC-CP entity may obtain the IP path status  information 215 from the at least one entity, such as the AF, the RAN, the UE, or the UPF. Alternatively, to obtain the IP path status information 215, the 5GC-CP entity may obtain a plurality of path selection rules for the plurality of IP paths based on at least one of subscription information of the one or more terminal devices 110 of the first communication system, or local policy pre-configured at the control plane entity, or combination thereof. For some other examples in which the network entity 202 is a user plane entity, specifically, the network entity 202 may be a user plane entity comprising or implementing a UPF. The user plane entity comprising or implementing the UPF may obtain the IP path status information 215 from the at least one entity, such as the RAN, the UE, or a 5GC-CP device. Alternatively, to obtain the IP path status information 215, the UPF may, detect a change to the IP path status information 215 via event or report provided by a plurality of packet processing rules configured, additionally, or alternatively, congestion information encapsulated in traffic data.

[0090] For the examples above, the 5GS (user plane entity or control plane entity of the 5GS) may receive updated IP path status information 215 (can happen at any time) from at least one of user plane entity of the 5GS associated with the redundant IP paths. The IP path status information 215 may include the status information of any network entity of the redundant IP paths, which include the network entities providing at least one of radio connection, N3 connection and PDU session. The user plane entity may include at least one of terminal device 110, RAN node 130 and a UPF. The updates to IP path status information 215 received from any user plane entity may be about the user plane entity itself and / or about the joint user plane entity associated with the redundant IP paths. Alternatively, the 5GS (user plane entity or control plane entity) may receive updates of IP path status information 215 from at least one of 5GS control plane entity / entities associated with the redundant IP paths due to changes of e.g., subscription information of the at least one UE, local policy. The control plane entity may comprise or implement at least one of a SMF, a PCF, a TSCTSF of the 5GC of the 5GS. Alternatively, the 5GS (user plane entity or control plane entity of the 5GS) may receive updates to IP path status information 215 from any updated IP traffic steering processing request or preference from AF via IP routing influence requirements. 5GS exposure capability is enhanced to allow the AF to provide routing influence information to any of the PDU sessions or service data flows transmitted via the PDU sessions associated with the redundant IP paths.

[0091] Upon receiving updates to IP path status information 215, the 5GS (e.g., user plane  entity or control plane entity of the 5GS) evaluates whether the redundant IP paths are qualified to carry ongoing IP traffic, or packet processing rules need to be changed for ongoing IP traffic. If there is any new coming IP traffic, the 5GS (e.g., user plane entity or control plane entity of the 5GS) also evaluates whether the redundant IP paths will be qualified to carry the new coming IP traffic. Then the 5GS (e.g., user plane entity or control plane entity of the 5GS) determines the updated IP path reachability information 225 jointly among redundant IP paths and sends the updated IP path reachability information to any of those user plane entities associated with the redundant PDU sessions. To make this decision jointly, IP path status information terminated at the user plane entity or control plane entity may need to be transmitted to the control plane entity or user plane entity instead.

[0092] Based on updated IP path reachability information 225, which the 5GS (e.g., user plane entity or control plane entity of the 5GS) may update packet processing rules for one or more PFCP and / or PDU sessions to make sure IP reachability via those PDU sessions are adjusted between them. The jointly determined updated IP path reachability information 225 may result in active and / or standby IP path switchover or master and / or back-up IP path switchover, additionally or alternatively, weight factor adjustment of redundant IP paths, additionally or alternatively, change of duplication decision for an IP traffic via the redundant IP paths, additionally or alternatively, any other IP traffic steering processing required by the AF.

[0093] In some examples, based on updated IP path reachability information 225, the user plane entity may update the IP routing parameters of the network behind the user plane entity which has an impact on traffic steering for ongoing or new coming IP traffic through the redundant IP paths. The IP routing parameters to be updated may include at least cost, priority and interface. If the user plane entity determines to update the IP path reachability information, to impact to the IP path reachability for a UE (e.g., a terminal device 110) , the UPF may transmit the updated IP path reachability information 225 to a 5GC-CP entity, and the 5GC-CP entity configures the terminal device 110 accordingly.

[0094] With reference to Fig. 3, the details will be described by taking the network entity as a control plane entity. In these examples, the control plane entity may be a 5GS control plane entity (control plane entity for short) , for example, a 5GC-CP entity. Fig. 3 illustrates an example of 5GC-CP entity determining the updated IP path reachability information according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. As shown in Fig. 3,  the control plane entity (e.g., the 5GC-CP entity) proactively learns or obtains the updates to IP path status information locally (step 3e) , or from any AF (step 3a) , or from one or more user plane entities (step 3b, 3c, 3d) associated with the redundant IP paths, and determines the updated the IP path reachability information.

[0095] Specifically, in some examples, as shown at step 3a, the 5GC-CP entity may be aware of path selection rules based on static subscription, local policy or IP routing influence provided by AF. The static subscription may refer to subscription information of the at least one terminal device 110 of the first communication system. A local policy may be pre-configured at the 5GC-CP entity. In some examples, with reference to step 3b, the 5GC-CP entity may learn or obtain the updates of the IP path status information from a UE (e.g., a terminal device 110) , for example, the 5GC-CP entity may learn or obtain a change to radio connection status from the UE (e.g., a terminal device 110) detected via L1 / 2 / 3 mechanism. In some examples, with reference to step 3c, the 5GC-CP entity may learn or obtain the updates to IP path status information from a RAN node 130 by detection of one or more below: notification about the change of radio connection status detected via L1 / 2 / 3 mechanism, QoS Notification Control (QNC) indication, alternative QoS profile index, and congestion information. In some examples, with reference to step 3d, the 5GC-CP entity may learn or obtain the updates of the IP path status information from the UPF, for example, 5GC-CP entity may learn or obtain updates of IP path status information from the UPF via at least one of QoS monitoring mechanism, event or report from packet processing rules configured via e.g., SRR, BAR, QER URR, or congestions information encapsulated in the traffic data and downlink data status. In some examples, with reference to step 3e, the 5GC-CP entity may learn or obtain a plurality of path selection rules based on local policy pre-configured at the 5GC-CP entity, or at least one of subscription information of the one or more UEs (e.g., terminal devices 110) . The updated IP path reachability information may impact any UPF or UE (e.g., terminal device 110) associated with the redundant IP paths (step 3f, 3g) .

[0096] With reference to Fig. 4, the details will be described by taking the network entity as a user plane entity. In these examples, the user plane entity may be a 5GS user plane entity (user plane entity for short) , for example, the UPF. Fig. 4 illustrates an example of UP entity determining the updated IP path reachability information according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. As shown in Fig. 4, the 5GS user plane entity may determine the updated IP path reachability information based on received updates of IP path  status information. The received updates of IP path status information may include information about the user plane entity itself and / or about the joint user plane entity associated with the redundant IP paths. The updates of IP path status information may be learned or obtained from at least one of radio connection status, N3 connection status and PDU session status reported by at least one of the user plane entities (step 4a, 4d) associated with the redundant IP paths, or from control plane entity (step 4b, 4c) .

[0097] Specifically, in some examples, as shown at step 4a, the UPF may receive updates of IP path status information from the UE (e.g., terminal device 110) . For example, the UPF may receive updates of IP status information from any UE or both UEs. In some embodiments, the UE (e.g., terminal device 110) may detect the status of its radio connection ( “radio connection status” ) or information about the performance variance of the IP paths, and transmit the detected radio status information or information about the performance variation of the IP paths to the UPF for determination of the updated IP path reachability information. In some other embodiments, the UE (e.g., the terminal device 110) may detect a change of congestion information encapsulated in downlink traffic data and transmits the detected congestion status or information indicating the performance variation of the IP paths via UP traffic to the UPF for determination of the updated IP path reachability information. In some other embodiments, the UE (e.g., the terminal 110) may detect change of user plane performance based on Performance Management Functionality (PMF) measurement information and transmit the detected radio connection status or information about the performance variation of the IP paths to the UPF for determination of updated IP path reachability information.

[0098] In some examples, as shown at step 4b, the UPF may receive updates of IP path status information from the RAN node 130, e.g., QoS monitoring measurement results. These updates of IP path status information from received the RAN node 130 may be transmitted to the UPF via 5GC-CP entity, e.g., congestion information, QoS Notification Control (QNC) indicator or alternative QoS index. In some examples, as shown at step 4c, the UPF may receive updates of IP path status information from the 5GC-CP entity, e.g., path selection rules based on subscription or local policy. In some examples, as shown at step 4d, the UPF may detect a change to the IP path status information locally via one or both below: event or report from packet processing rules, which are configured via e.g., SRR, BAR, QER and URR, or congestions information encapsulated in the uplink traffic data. The IP path reachability information may impact any UPF, or UE (e.g., terminal  device 110) associated with the redundant IP paths (step 4e, 4f) .

[0099] Fig. 5 illustrates a flowchart of a method for updating IP path reachability information according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. LAN 501 may be of a second communication system, and UE1 503, UE2 505, RAN1 507, RAN2 509, UPF 511, 5GC-CP entity 513, AF 515 may be network entities of the first communication system, and DN 517 is any data network behind the UPF. Method 500 involves a scenario of IP path switching in case of one UPF, and in such scenario, it is assumed that only one UPF is involved in the redundant IP paths. Both UE1 503 and UE2 505 are connected to the 5GS. As shown at 502, 504, PDU session are established respectively, and both UE1 503 and UE2 505 are anchored at UPF1 511. The PDU sessions which are associated with the redundant IP paths are known by the core network (e.g., 5GC) , as shown at 506. As shown at 508 and 510, IP traffic is transmitted via UE1 503. At 512 and 514, the UPF 511 computes or calculates the UL / DL packet delay between UE1 and UPF and UE2 and the UPF, respectively, based on QoS monitoring mechanism. How the QoS monitoring mechanism is triggered within the 5GS leading the UPF to compute or calculate the UL / DL packet delay between the UE1 503 and the UPF and UE2 505 and UPF 511 is prior-art and not shown in Fig. 5. There may be various ways of determining updated IP reachability information, such as option 5-1 and option 5-2 described below.

[0100] For option 5-1, in some embodiments, the update to the IP reachability information may be determined by the 5GC-CP entity 513. At 516a, the UPF 511 learns or obtains the updates of IP path status information proactively and transmits the learnt updates of IP path status information to 5GC-CP entity 513. Upon receiving QoS monitoring information for both IP paths, the 5GC-CP entity 513 (e.g., SMF and / or PCF) learns IP path status information. For example, at 518a, the 5GC-CP entity 513 detects that the delay of IP path 1 is more than previously observed delay and the situation lasts for a period of time (which can be preconfigured or provided by the AF 515) , while the delay of IP path 2 is quite stable. In that sense, the 5GC-CP entity 513 decides to update the IP reachability information which results in IP path switching from IP path 1 to IP path 2 (or causes path switching from IP path 1 to IP path 2 to be performed) .

[0101] For option 5-2, in some embodiments, the updated IP reachability information may be determined by the UP entity 511. At 516b, the UPF 511 learns the updates of IP path status information proactively and evaluates those IP paths together. For example, the UPF 511 detects that the delay of IP path 1 has increased during a time period (the time  period can be preconfigured or provided by the AF 515) , while the delay of IP path 2 is quite stable. In that sense, the UPF 511 decides to update the IP reachability information which results in IP path switching from IP path 1 to IP path 2 (or cause path switching from IP path 1 to IP path 2 to be performed) . At 518b, the UPF 511 informs the 5G-CP control plane entity 513 (e.g., SMF) of its decision to update the IP reachability information (e.g., the UPF 511 transmits an indication of its decision to update the IP reachability information to the SMF.

[0102] In some embodiments, after 518a or 516b has been performed, the SMF may configure, for the UPF 511, PDR and / or FAR rules associated with an ongoing IP traffic or a new incoming traffic. In the event that the PDR and / or FAR rules associated with the ongoing IP traffic, or the new incoming traffic are configured, traffic steering for ongoing or new coming IP traffic will be impacted. In some other embodiments, the PDR and / or FAR rules above are not configured, thus the ongoing IP traffic or the new incoming traffic are not impacted, and in these embodiments, based on the IP parameters are updated, future traffic may be impacted. For the flowcharts of Fig. 6, Fig. 7, and Fig. 8 may be implemented likewise. The future traffic may be traffic after the ongoing IP traffic or the new incoming traffic, and no PDR and / or FAR rules have been configured for it yet. The future traffic may be traffic after the ongoing IP traffic or the new incoming traffic, and no PDR and / or FAR rules have been configured for it yet.

[0103] In some embodiments, the 5GC-CP entity 513 (e.g., SMF) increases and / or reduces the cost and / or priority (examples of IP parameters) for IP path 1, and optionally reduces and / or increases the cost and / or priority for IP path 2, as shown at 520a and 520b, the 5GC-CP entity 513 transmits, to the UE1 503, the UE2 505 and the UPF 511, the updates to IP parameter to reduce and / or increase cost and / or priority. The IP parameter may be transmitted to the UE1 503 through the RAN1 507 and transmitted to the UE2 505 through the RAN2 509. At 522 and 524, the increased and / or reduced cost and / or priority triggers IP routing signaling to networks behind the UE1 503 and UE2 505 and / or UPF 511, respectively. Then the IP traffic is transmitted (at 526 and 528) .

[0104] Fig. 6 illustrates a flowchart of a method 600 for updating IP path reachability information according to some other embodiments of the present disclosure. Method 600 involves a scenario of load balancing or packet duplication in case of one UPF, and in such scenario, it is assumed that only one UPF is involved in the redundant IP paths. Both UEs (e.g., terminal devices 110) are connected to the 5GS. Which PDU sessions are associated  with the redundant IP paths are known in the 5GC. This means that 502, 504 and 506 described above with reference to Fig. 5 also applies in the embodiments shown in Fig. 6. Steps 502, 504 and 506 are performed prior to step 602. At 602, local policy may pre-configured for load balancing, that is, 5GC-CP entity 513 may learn load balancing parameters among those PDU sessions associated with the redundant IP paths from pre-configured local policy.

[0105] In some embodiments, PCF and / or SMF (an example of the 5GC-CP entity 513) can use the pre-configured local policy to modify PDR and / or FAR rules to modify the weight factor. The above can be achieved via static policy as well. Steps 604 and 606 may be similar to 508 and 510 described above and hence are not described in detail. At 608, the 5GC-CP entity 513 may learn QoS notification control (QNC) information, alternative QoS index or congestion information from a RAN node. In some embodiments, as shown at 610, the 5GC-CP entity 513 may transmit the QNC information, alternative QoS index or congestion information to the AF 515. There may be various ways of determining updates for the IP reachability information, such as option 6-1 and option 6-2 described below.

[0106] For option 6-1, in some embodiments, the updates to IP reachability information may be determined by a CP entity. At 612a, the 5GC-CP entity 513 may learn from AF 515 about IP routing influence information. With reference to 610, when the AF 515 gets notification on QoS monitoring results, the AF 515 can decide to send new priority and / or weight values or provide new duplication indication. AF 515 influence can happen at any point or even without receiving step 608 and 610 as a precondition. The AF 515 IP routing influence information can be used to also modify an existing subscription in the UDR or add new subscription in UDR (e.g., modify GMBR (Guaranteed Maximum Bit Rate) ) . At 614a, the 5GC-CP entity 513 may evaluate redundant IP paths and determine the updated IP reachability information based on learnt IP path status information.

[0107] For example, the 5GC-CP entity 513 evaluates redundant IP paths by detecting that the QoS performance for the IP path 1 is reduced while the QoS performance for IP path 2 is quite stable. Then the 5GC-CP entity 513 decides to update the IP reachability information to rebalance data rate between IP paths via e.g., modifying the weight factors of the redundant IP paths. In some embodiments, 5GC-CP entity 513 decides to reduce the traffic load in IP path 1. In some other embodiments, 5GC-CP entity 513 decides to duplicate the IP traffic of IP path 1 to all redundant IP paths to improve the reliability. At 616a and 618a, the determined weight factor or duplication indication is provided to the  UPF 511, based on which, the weight factor (s) of the impact PDU session (s) is updated, or packet duplication is configured. In some embodiments, this may be achieved via re-configuration of packet processing rules (e.g., PDR and / or FAR rules) .

[0108] For option 6-2, in some embodiments, the updated IP reachability information may be determined by the UP entity. The UPF 511 may learn QoS notification control information, alternative QoS index or congestion information from 5GC-CP entity 513 (in step 612b, the step 612b only happens if step 608 is performed) . The UPF 511 may also learn congestion information by detecting explicit congestion notification (ECN) or Low Latency, Low Loss and Scalable Throughput (L4S) indication in packet (in step 614b) . It should be noted that, to make sure UPF understand QNC information, alternative QoS index, the 5GC-CP entity 513 (e.g., SMF) may also configure those parameters to UPF 511 in steps 502 and 504, which is not shown in the figure. At 616b, the UPF 511 determines the updates of IP reachability updates based on learnt IP path status information. At 618b and 620b, the UPF decides to update weight factor (s) of the impact PDU session (s) or re-configures the duplication indication. In some embodiments, this may be achieved via re-configuration of packet processing rules (e.g., PDR / FAR rules) . In some examples, the UPF may also decide to increase and / or reduce the cost and / or priority of an IP path (e.g., IP path1) . The UPF 511 then reports the decision (e.g., sends an indication of the decision) to 5GC-CP entity 513 (e.g., SMF) .

[0109] At 622, for example, IP parameter is updated and transmitted to the UE1 503 (e.g., terminal 110) to increase / reduce the cost / priority of IP path 1. The reduced and / or increase cost and / or priority can decrease the new coming traffic carried by the IP path 1. In some embodiments, to guarantee QoS sustainability of ongoing traffic over IP path 1, the SMF may also trigger user plane resource reconfiguration for one or more QoS flows, which is not shown in the above figures. UP resource reconfiguration can include at least one of 5QI mapping, transport level marking, radio resource reconfigurations and N3 network instance re-selection. At 624, the increased  / or reduced the cost and / or priority triggers IP routing signaling to network behind the UE1 503 (e.g., the network connected to UE1 503) . At 626 and 628, based on IP routing algorithm results, the IP traffic 1 and the IP traffic 2 are moved from IP path 1 to IP path 2.

[0110] Fig. 7 illustrates a flowchart of a method 700 for updating IP path reachability information according to some other embodiments of the present disclosure. Similar to the method 500 above, the method 700 also involves a scenario of IP path switching.  Unlike the method 500, the method 700 is for a plurality of UPFs (for example, two UPFs) , that is, the CP entity evaluates redundant IP paths based on learned or obtained IP path status information received from at least one of UPF associated with the redundant PDU sessions. The CP entity knows which IP path of the redundant IP paths has better QoS performance and decides to cause or perform IP path switching from the worse IP path of the redundant IP paths to the better IP path of the redundant IP paths (e.g., from the IP path of the redundant IP paths with the lowest QoS performance value to the IP path of the redundant IP paths with the highest QoS performance value) .

[0111] For steps in method 700 which are similar to those steps in method 500, reference may be made to corresponding steps in method 500 for the description of these steps. For example, steps 702, 704, 716a, 716b, 718, 720, 722 and 724, may refer to the description of corresponding steps 508, 510, 520a, 520b, 522, 524, 526 and 528 in the method 500 for the description thereof. Different from steps 512 and 514, in steps 706 and 710, the UPF1 511 and the UPF2 519 compute or calculate the UL and / or DL packet delay between UE and the corresponding UPF 511 and UFP 519 based on QoS monitoring mechanism respectively and transmits the corresponding QoS monitoring report (708 and 712) . At 714, the 5GC-CP entity 513 evaluates the redundant IP paths, and determines to update IP reachability information, e.g. action=path switch.

[0112] Fig. 8 illustrates a flowchart of a method 800 for IP path reachability updating according to some other embodiments of the present disclosure. Similar to method 600 above, method 800 also involves a scenario of load balancing or packet duplication. Unlike the method 600, the method 800 is for a plurality of UPF scenarios (for example, two UPFs) , that is, the CP entity evaluates redundant IP paths based on learned or obtained IP path status information from at least one of RAN nodes associated with the redundant PDU sessions. The CP entity may know which IP path of the redundant IP paths has better QoS performance is better and decide to cause or perform IP path switch from the worse IP path (e.g., the IP path of the redundant IP paths which has the lowest QoS performance value) to the better IP path (the IP path of the redundant IP paths which has the highest QoS performance value) . The CP entity may receive routing influence information from the AF 515 (in step 810) at any point in time, and may evaluate redundant IP paths, and decide to update IP reachability information accordingly (e.g., action = load balancing updates) (in step 812) . If weight factors are received by the 5GC-CP entity 513, the 5GC-CP entity 513 re-configures the weight factor for load balancing control in at least one of the UPFs  511, 519 associated with the redundant PDU sessions (in step 814b and 814c) . For steps in method 800 which are similar to those steps in method 600, reference may be made to corresponding steps in method 600. For example, steps 802, 804, 806, 808, 814a, 816, 818 and 820 in Fig. 8, are similar to the corresponding steps 604, 606, 608, 610, 622, 624, 626 and 628 in the method 600 and are thus not described in detail.
