Description

[0001] Display device and motor vehicle with a display device

[0002] DESCRIPTION:

[0003] The invention relates to a display device for a motor vehicle, comprising a cover glass, on the rear side of which a display for displaying a display content is arranged, as well as a support for mounting the cover glass. The invention further relates to a motor vehicle with a display device.

[0004] Display devices for motor vehicles are known in a wide variety of designs. With LCD display devices, it is common (see Figure 5) to arrange the display for showing the display content on the back of a cover glass, wherein the diameter of the cover glass is larger than the diameter of the display. A lighting unit for illuminating or transilluminating the LCD display is arranged at a distance from the back of the display. The lighting unit can in turn be held on a carrier. The larger diameter of the cover glass makes it possible to mount the cover glass on the carrier in an edge region outside the display. For this purpose, the cover glass is glued to the carrier in this edge region (also referred to herein as the adhesive edge). This edge region of the cover glass cannot therefore be used to display the display content and is usually colored dark (e.g., black). In addition, the display itself has an edge area that cannot be used to display the display content and that can also be colored dark. Since the display is smaller in the radial direction than the cover glass, this results in a so-called black edge area of the display device, which is the sum of the black edge of the cover glass and at least part of the black edge of the display that does not overlap with the black edge of the cover glass, in radial extension. On the one hand, this reduces the usable display area of the display device in relation to its overall size. Especially in vehicle interiors, installation space is naturally very limited. A display device, for example, competes with a multitude of other displays, controls, ventilation openings, etc. that are also present in the vehicle interior. On the other hand, users often find a wide black edge to be unsightly and sometimes even annoying. It is therefore desirable to make optimal use of the available space.

[0005] Against this background, the object of the invention is to provide a display device for a motor vehicle that minimizes a black border, i.e., an edge area of the display device that is unusable for displaying display content. Furthermore, the object of the invention is to provide a motor vehicle with a display device in which the utilization of the available arrangement area on the vehicle is maximized.

[0006] This object is achieved by a display device having the features of claim 1 and by a motor vehicle having the features of claim 11. Further, particularly advantageous embodiments of the invention are disclosed in the respective subclaims.

[0007] It should be noted that the features listed individually in the claims can be combined with one another in any technically reasonable manner (even across category boundaries, for example, between methods and devices) and demonstrate further embodiments of the invention. The description further characterizes and specifies the invention, particularly in conjunction with the figures.

[0008] It should also be noted that a conjunction "and / or" used herein between two features and linking them together is always to be interpreted in such a way that in a first embodiment of the subject matter according to the invention only the first feature can be present, in a second embodiment only the second feature can be present and in a third embodiment both the first and the second feature can be present.

[0009] The invention relates to a display device for a motor vehicle, comprising a cover glass, on the rear side of which a display side of a display for displaying a display content is arranged. Furthermore, according to the invention, the display device comprises a carrier for supporting the cover glass. The invention provides that the cover glass is glued to the carrier by means of the display.

[0010] In other words, the display itself establishes a force-transmitting, mechanical connection between the cover glass and the carrier. The invention eliminates the need for a conventionally provided adhesive edge for the direct mounting or connection of the cover glass to the carrier in their radially outer edge regions, thereby reducing the overall black border width of the display device. For example, the black border of the cover glass can essentially be of a maximum size that it only overlaps with a black border of the display, so that in such a case, the black border width of the display device is determined only by the black border width of the display. It is to be understood that the black border width of the display device according to the invention is reduced compared to conventional display devices even if the cover glass projects slightly beyond the display in the radial direction, since a width of the otherwise usual adhesive border of conventional display devices is saved in any case in the invention.

[0011] It should be noted that the display side of the display or the front side of a component of the display device is understood herein to be a side or surface facing a viewer of the display device during its intended use. Accordingly, the rear side is referred to herein as a side or surface facing away from the viewer. In a preferred embodiment, the display side of the display is fully bonded to the rear side of the cover glass by means of a display-side adhesive layer. For this purpose, for example, a double-sided adhesive film or a liquid adhesive resin (e.g. acrylic or silicone) can be used, or in any case an optically clear (i.e. transparent or translucent) adhesive layer that enables a user to view the display content to be shown by the display through the cover glass. The full-surface bonding enables the definition of a uniform, constant distance between the display surface of the display and the entire back of the cover glass, thereby improving the visual impression of the display device for the viewer.

[0012] In further embodiments, a rear side of the display is bonded at least partially to a front side of the carrier by means of a rear-side adhesive layer, in particular bonded directly to the carrier. It has been shown that a reliable mechanical connection between the cover glass and the carrier can be achieved by bonding the rear side of the display to the carrier only in certain areas. The use of the adhesive can be minimized accordingly.

[0013] In another preferred embodiment, a glass carrier is inserted between a rear side of the display and a front side of the carrier, wherein the rear side of the display is bonded to the glass carrier at least in some regions by means of a rear-side adhesive layer, and a rear side of the glass carrier is bonded to the carrier. The glass carrier mechanically insulates the display from the carrier via the carrier-side adhesive layer such that any differential thermal expansion between the glass carrier and the carrier can be fully compensated for by the adhesive layer. The display is therefore reliably protected from mechanical stresses that can be introduced into the display device via the carrier.

[0014] Preferably, the glass carrier extends substantially over the entire front side of the carrier. In further embodiments, the partial bonding of the back of the display to the carrier or the glass carrier is limited to a black border area of the display, i.e., to an edge area of the display that is not used to display the display content. In this edge area, the display can be designed to be mechanically stable, so that bonding only in this edge area ensures a reliable and stable connection between the display and the carrier or the glass carrier.

[0015] In alternative embodiments, the adhesive bonding of the back of the display, at least in some areas, is formed essentially over the entire surface of the back of the display. This distributes the forces to be transmitted between the display and the carrier or glass carrier over a large area, further reducing the mechanical stress on the display.

[0016] In further advantageous embodiments, the cover glass and the carrier each protrude slightly beyond the display in a radial direction at an edge section. Advantageously, a seal extending circumferentially around the display is inserted between the cover glass and the carrier in this edge section. The seal can be directly adjacent to the carrier or arranged indirectly via the glass carrier between the carrier and the cover glass. The seal extending circumferentially around the display reliably protects it from possible foreign substances and particles from the environment, e.g., moisture, dust, and the like.

[0017] Preferably, the carrier is formed from a magnesium die-cast material.

[0018] Furthermore, the display is preferably an OLED display (OLED, organic light-emitting diode).

[0019] According to further preferred embodiments, the display device comprises a housing for at least partially accommodating the cover glass and the display, with a portion of the housing forming the support. The housing can be formed from a magnesium die-cast material.

[0020] Furthermore, the subject matter of the invention is a motor vehicle with a display device, wherein the display device is designed according to one of the embodiments disclosed herein.

[0021] It should be understood that with regard to vehicle-related definitions of terms as well as the effects and advantages of vehicle-specific features, the disclosure of corresponding definitions, effects, and advantages of the display device according to the invention can be fully relied upon, and vice versa. Repetition of explanations of similar features, their effects, and advantages can thus be omitted in favor of a more concise description, without such omissions being interpreted as a limitation of any of the disclosed subject matter of the invention.

[0022] The display device is preferably arranged in the interior of the motor vehicle, for example, as a central display device on a vehicle dashboard. Due to the reduced black border width of the display device, the area provided by the vehicle can be optimally utilized for various elements.

[0023] Further features and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following description of non-limiting embodiments of the invention, which are explained in more detail below with reference to the drawings. In this drawing, schematically show:

[0024] Figure 1 is a partial view of a display device according to an embodiment of the invention;

[0025] Figure 2 shows a partial view of a display device according to a further embodiment of the invention; Figure 3 shows a partial view of a display device according to yet another embodiment of the invention;

[0026] Figure 4 is a partial view of a display device according to yet another embodiment of the invention; and

[0027] Figure 5 is a partial view of a prior art display device.

[0028] In the different figures, parts that are equivalent in terms of their function are always provided with the same reference symbols, so that they are usually only described once.

[0029] Figure 1 schematically shows a partial view of a display device 10 for a motor vehicle (not shown in detail) according to an embodiment of the invention. The partial view shows the display device 10 in detail, particularly in its edge region, including a radially inwardly extending section. It is to be understood that this can be adjoined by a further edge region, which is not shown in Figure 1, but can be designed similarly or identically to the edge region shown in Figure 1.

[0030] The display device 10 has a cover glass 11, on the back of which a display side of a display 12 for displaying a display content is arranged. The display 12 is embodied here as an OLED display.

[0031] The display side of the display 12 or the front side of a component of the display device 10 is generally understood to be a side or surface facing a viewer 13 of the display device 10 during its intended use. In the illustration in Figure 1, this is, for example, an upward-facing side or surface of the display 12. The rear side, accordingly, denotes a side or surface facing away from the viewer 13; in the present illustration, accordingly, a downward-facing side or surface of the respective component. Furthermore, the display device 10 illustrated in Figure 1 has a carrier 14 for supporting the cover glass 11. The cover glass 11 is adhesively bonded to the carrier 14 by means of the display 12. The display 12 thus mediates the mechanical forces between the cover glass 11 and the carrier 14.A dedicated adhesive edge in a radially outer edge region of the cover glass 11 and the carrier 14 can advantageously be dispensed with.

[0032] The carrier 14 is preferably formed from a magnesium die-cast material. The carrier 14 can be part of a housing (not shown in detail) of the display device 10.

[0033] Furthermore, Figure 1 shows that the display side of the display 12 is fully bonded to the back of the cover glass 11 by means of a display-side adhesive layer 15.

[0034] In the display device 10 shown in Figure 1, a rear side of the display 12 is bonded directly to a front side of the carrier 14 in some areas by means of a rear-side adhesive layer 16. In particular, the bonding of the rear side of the display 12 is limited to a black border area 17 of the display 12. The black border area 17 of the display 12 is shown in Figure 1 with cross-hatching. Preferably, the rear-side adhesive layer 16 does not extend radially beyond this black border area 17.

[0035] The black border area or the black border width of the cover glass 11 is shown at 18. The entire black border area or black border width of the display device 10 is shown at 19 (both with cross-hatching). The black border area or the black border width 19 results in the radial direction from the sum of the black border area or the black border width 18 of the cover glass 11 and at least a part of the black border area or the black border width 17 of the display 12 that does not overlap with the black border area 18 of the cover glass 11. The black border width 19 of the display device 10 is significantly reduced compared to conventional display devices (cf. Figure 5) because the display device 10 dispenses with an additional adhesive edge for directly bonding the cover glass 11 to the carrier 14 in the black border area 18 of the cover glass 11.

[0036] Figure 1 further shows that the cover glass 11 and the carrier 14 each protrude slightly beyond the display 12 in the radial direction in an outer edge section. The cavity thus formed between the cover glass 11 and the carrier 14 is intended to accommodate a seal 20 extending circumferentially around the display 12.

[0037] Figure 2 schematically illustrates a partial view of a display device 25 for a motor vehicle (not shown) according to a further embodiment of the invention. The essential difference between the display device 25 and the display device 10 of Figure 1 is that the adhesive bonding of the display 12 to the carrier 14 takes place essentially over the entire rear surface of the display 12. All other features of the display device 25 can be similar or identical to the display device 10 of Figure 1.

[0038] Figure 3 schematically shows a partial view of a display device 30 for a motor vehicle (not shown) according to yet another embodiment of the invention. The essential difference between the display device 30 and the display device 10 in Figure 1 is that a glass carrier 31 is inserted between a rear side of the display 12 and a front side of the carrier 14, and the rear side of the display 12 is partially bonded to the glass carrier 31 by means of a rear-side adhesive layer 16. A rear side of the glass carrier 31 is, in this case, fully bonded to the front side of the carrier 14 by means of an adhesive layer 32. Furthermore, it can be seen from Figure 3 that the glass carrier 31 extends over the entire front side of the carrier 14. The partial bonding of the rear side of the display 12 to the glass carrier 31 is, in this case, essentially limited to the black border area 17 of the display 12.Figure 4 schematically illustrates a partial view of a display device 35 for a motor vehicle (not shown) according to yet another embodiment of the invention. The essential difference between the display device 35 and the display device 30 of Figure 4 is that the adhesive bonding of the display 12 to the glass carrier 31 takes place essentially over the entire rear surface of the display 12. All other features of the display device 35 can be similar or identical to the display device 30 of Figure 3.

[0039] Figure 5 schematically illustrates a partial view of a display device 50 according to the prior art. A display 51 for displaying display content is an LCD display here. The display 51 is arranged on the rear side of a cover glass 52, wherein a diameter of the cover glass 52 is larger than a diameter of the display 51. A lighting unit 53 for illuminating or transilluminating the LCD display 51 is arranged on the rear side of the LCD display 51 at a distance therefrom. The lighting unit 53 can be held on a carrier 54. The larger diameter of the cover glass 52 is provided to support the cover glass 52 in an edge region 18 outside the display 51 on the carrier 54. For this purpose, the cover glass 52 is glued to the carrier 54 in this edge region 18 by means of appropriate adhesive layers 55 (if necessary with the interposition of a so-called retainer 56).This edge region 18 of the cover glass 52 cannot therefore be used to display the display content and forms the black border of the display 52. Furthermore, the display 51 itself also has a black border region 17 that cannot be used to display the display content. Since the display 51 is smaller in the radial direction than the cover glass 52, the entire black border region 19 of the display device 50 results in the radial extent from the sum of the black border 18 of the cover glass 52 and at least a portion of the black border 17 of the display 51 that does not overlap with the black border 18 of the cover glass 52.
