Description

Position detection devices and sensors

[0001] The present invention relates to a position detection device and a sensor, and more particularly to a position detection device and a sensor that detects the position of a pen by an electromagnetic induction method (EMR method).

[0002] The EMR method is known as one method for detecting the position of an electromagnetic induction pen on a panel surface of a tablet terminal or the like. A position detection device using the EMR method has an EMR sensor including an X coil arranged in the X direction and a Y coil arranged in the Y direction, and is configured to derive the position of the electromagnetic induction pen through electromagnetic induction between the EMR sensor and the electromagnetic induction pen. Patent Document 1 discloses an example of an EMR sensor. As disclosed in this document, the EMR sensor is generally disposed below the display (the side farther from the panel surface). Furthermore, a touch sensor for detecting the position of a finger on the panel surface is disposed above the display (the side closer to the panel surface).

[0003] Furthermore, in recent years, foldable displays have appeared. Examples of foldable displays are disclosed in Patent Documents 2 and 3.

[0004] JP 2021-033543 A U.S. Patent Application Publication No. 2023-0071229 U.S. Patent Application Publication No. 2021-0208709

[0005] Incidentally, when a foldable display such as those disclosed in Patent Documents 2 and 3 is adapted to detect the position of an electromagnetic induction pen using the EMR system, the EMR sensor must also be configured to be foldable. However, an external EMR sensor (seen from the display) such as that described in Patent Document 1 cannot meet this requirement. This is because it is difficult to precisely position the wiring in the EMR sensor, which is manufactured in a process separate from the display, relative to the folding axis of the display.

[0006] Therefore, one object of the present invention is to provide a position detection device and a sensor that include a foldable display and that are compatible with position detection of an electromagnetic induction pen using the EMR method.

[0007] Furthermore, in conventional EMR sensors, both the X coil and the Y coil have overlapping wiring between adjacent coils. In other words, both the X coil and the Y coil have a multi-layer structure, which increases the thickness of the structure including the EMR sensor and the display, and therefore improvements were needed.

[0019] Hereinafter, embodiments of the present invention will be described in detail with reference to the accompanying drawings.

[0020] FIG. 1 is a diagram showing the configuration of a position detection system 1 according to a first embodiment of the present invention. As shown in the figure, the position detection system 1 includes an electromagnetic induction pen 2 and a position detection device 3. The electromagnetic induction pen 2 is a pen that supports position detection using the EMR method and is configured with an internal resonant circuit including a coil and a capacitor. The EMR method derives the position of the electromagnetic induction pen 2 through electromagnetic induction between an EMR sensor 42 (described later) and the electromagnetic induction pen 2. This method includes both a method in which an alternating magnetic field is exchanged bidirectionally between the EMR sensor 42 and the electromagnetic induction pen 2, and a method in which an alternating magnetic field is transmitted unidirectionally from the electromagnetic induction pen 2 to the EMR sensor 42. In this embodiment, the explanation will continue with an example in which an alternating magnetic field is exchanged bidirectionally between the EMR sensor 42 and the electromagnetic induction pen 2.

[0021] The position detection device 3 is a computer (electronic device) that supports pen input using the EMR method and touch input using the capacitive method, and is configured with a switch circuit 30, a sensor controller 31, a host processor 32, and a structure 33. The structure 33 includes a cover film 40, a touch sensor 41, an EMR sensor 42, and a display 43. Note that the order in which the cover film 40, touch sensor 41, EMR sensor 42, and display 43 are arranged in FIG. 1 is for convenience's sake, and their actual arrangement will be described later with reference to FIG. 5. In a typical example, the position detection device 3 is a tablet terminal or laptop computer that supports pen input and touch input.

[0022] First, focusing on the structure 33, the cover film 40 is a film-like member for protecting the internal structure of the structure 33, and is made of, for example, polyethylene terephthalate. The reason why a cover glass as shown in FIG. 18 (described later) is not used as a member for protecting the internal structure of the structure 33 is to enable folding about the folding axis BA shown in the figure. The structure 33 is configured to be capable of valley folding about the folding axis BA, and therefore the display 43 is a foldable display. The type of display system of the display 43 is not particularly limited, and may be a liquid crystal display or an organic EL display.

[0023] The surface of the cover film 40 is flat and forms a panel surface 3a that also serves as the touch surface of the touch sensor 41 and the EMR sensor 42 and the display surface of the display 43. A user of the position detection device 3 performs pen input by sliding the pen tip of the electromagnetic induction pen 2 over this panel surface 3a, and performs touch input by sliding their finger over it.

[0024] The touch sensor 41 is a sensor including a plurality of Tx electrodes, which are linear electrodes extending in the x direction and arranged side by side in the y direction, and a plurality of Rx electrodes, which are linear electrodes extending in the y direction and arranged side by side in the x direction. Each of the plurality of Tx electrodes and each of the plurality of Rx electrodes are connected to the sensor controller 31 via a switch circuit 30. The EMR sensor 42 is a sensor including a plurality of Tx coils and a plurality of Rx coils. As will be described in detail later with reference to FIGS. 6 to 8 , in this embodiment, the plurality of Tx coils are configured by a single comb coil (Tx electrode), and the plurality of Rx coils are shared with the plurality of Rx electrodes of the touch sensor 41. Each of the plurality of Tx coils and each of the plurality of Rx coils are connected to the sensor controller 31 via the switch circuit 30.

[0025] The switch circuit 30 is an integrated circuit including a group of switches provided between the sensor controller 31 and each electrode (including a coil) in the touch sensor 41 and the EMR sensor 42. The switching of the group of switches constituting the switch circuit 30 is performed by the sensor controller 31. The switch circuit 30 will be described in detail later with reference to FIGS. 7 and 8.

[0026] The sensor controller 31 is an integrated circuit having a function of deriving the position of a finger on the panel surface 3a using a touch sensor 41 and a function of deriving the position of the electromagnetic induction pen 2 on the panel surface 3a using an EMR sensor 42. With respect to the electromagnetic induction pen 2, the sensor controller 31 is also configured to have a function of receiving data transmitted by the electromagnetic induction pen 2. The position derived by the sensor controller 31 and the received data are sequentially supplied to the host processor 32.

[0027] To briefly explain the processing performed by the sensor controller 31, first, with regard to the position of the finger, the sensor controller 31 transmits a predetermined touch detection signal from each of the multiple Tx electrodes and receives it at each of the multiple Rx electrodes, thereby acquiring the intensity of the touch detection signal received at each intersection of the multiple Rx electrodes and the multiple Tx electrodes. Then, the sensor controller 31 derives the position of the finger on the panel surface 3 a based on the distribution of the acquired intensity.

[0028] Next, to determine the position of the electromagnetic induction pen 2, the sensor controller 31 sequentially supplies AC current to the multiple Tx coils. The Tx coils to which AC current is supplied emit an AC magnetic field. When a coil constituting the resonant circuit of the electromagnetic induction pen 2 enters this AC magnetic field, an electromotive force is generated across both ends of the coil, charging a capacitor that constitutes the resonant circuit together with the coil. When the sensor controller 31 subsequently stops supplying AC current, the power stored in the capacitor causes the coil of the electromagnetic induction pen 2 to emit an AC magnetic field (hereinafter referred to as the "pen AC magnetic field"). The sensor controller 31 receives a signal (hereinafter referred to as the "pen signal") generated in each Rx coil by this pen AC magnetic field and acquires its intensity to derive the position of the electromagnetic induction pen 2 within the panel surface 3a. This process will be described in more detail later with reference to FIGS. 2 to 4.

[0029] Finally, with regard to the data transmitted by the electromagnetic induction pen 2, the data to be transmitted may include a writing pressure value indicating the pressure applied to the pen tip, on / off information indicating the state of a switch provided on the surface of the housing, a pen ID stored in the built-in memory, etc. The electromagnetic induction pen 2 is configured so that the resonant frequency of the resonant circuit changes depending on the content of this data, and when the resonant frequency of the resonant circuit changes, the frequency of the pen signal received by the sensor controller 31 also changes. The sensor controller 31 receives the data transmitted by the electromagnetic induction pen 2 by detecting this change in frequency by demodulating the received pen signal.

[0030] The host processor 32 is the central processing unit of the position detection device 3, and executes programs read from a memory (not shown) to execute the operating system and various applications of the position detection device 3. The processes executed by the host processor 32 in accordance with the programs include generating a video signal and supplying it to the display 43, and various processes performed using the position and data supplied from the sensor controller 31. The various processes performed using the position and data include, for example, moving a cursor displayed on the display surface and generating stroke data indicating the trajectory of the electromagnetic induction pen 2 on the touch surface. With regard to the stroke data, the host processor 32 also performs processes such as rendering and displaying the generated stroke data, generating and recording digital ink including the generated stroke data, and transmitting the generated digital ink to an external device in response to a user instruction.

[0031] 2 to 4 are diagrams for explaining the principle of deriving the position of the electromagnetic induction pen 2. These diagrams are for explaining the principle, and do not necessarily match the configurations of the switch circuit 30, sensor controller 31, and EMR sensor 42 according to this embodiment. Below, the principle of deriving the position of the electromagnetic induction pen 2 will be explained in detail with reference to these diagrams.

[0032] Here, the multiple loop coils LCx shown in Figures 2 to 4 are coils that extend in the y direction and are arranged side by side in the x direction, while the multiple loop coils LCy are coils that extend in the x direction and are arranged side by side in the y direction. In the example of Figure 2, the loop coils LCx and LCy correspond to both the Rx coil and the Tx coil. On the other hand, in the examples of Figures 3 and 4, the loop coil LCx corresponds to the Rx coil, and the loop coil LCy corresponds to the Tx coil. Note that for simplicity of explanation, only five loop coils LCx and LCy are shown in each figure, but an actual EMR sensor 42 typically has many more loop coils LCx and LCy. Also, in each figure, the position of the active area A, which is the display area (the area where the display image is displayed) of the display 43, is indicated by a dashed line.

[0033] Referring first to FIG. 2, the switch circuit 30 according to this example is configured to include switches 50 to 53, and the sensor controller 31 is configured to include a Y-axis circuit 62 and an X-axis circuit 63.

[0034] The switch 50 is a multi-throw, single-pole switch that includes a plurality of selection terminals each connected to one end of each loop coil LCy and a common terminal connected to the common terminal of the switch 52. The other end of each loop coil LCy is grounded. The switch 52 is a double-throw, single-pole switch that includes a selection terminal connected to the output terminal of the Y-axis circuit 62 via a buffer, a selection terminal connected to the input terminal of the Y-axis circuit 62 via a buffer, and a common terminal connected to the common terminal of the switch 50.

[0035] The switch 51 is a multi-throw, single-pole switch that includes a plurality of selection terminals each connected to one end of each loop coil LCx and a common terminal connected to the common terminal of the switch 53. The other end of each loop coil LCx is grounded. The switch 53 is a double-throw, single-pole switch that includes a selection terminal connected to the output terminal of the X-axis circuit 63 via a buffer, a selection terminal connected to the input terminal of the X-axis circuit 63 via a buffer, and a common terminal connected to the common terminal of the switch 51.

[0036] In the example of FIG. 2 , the sensor controller 31 first switches the switch 52 to the input terminal of the Y-axis circuit 62, the switch 53 to the output terminal of the X-axis circuit 63, and the switch 51 to one of the loop coils LCx, as shown in the figure. Next, the sensor controller 31 starts outputting an AC current from the X-axis circuit 63. This causes the loop coil LCx connected to the X-axis circuit 63 to emit an AC magnetic field, causing that loop coil LCx to function as a Tx coil. After a predetermined time has elapsed since the start of output, the sensor controller 31 stops outputting the AC current and controls the switch 50 to connect one of the loop coils LCy to the input terminal of the Y-axis circuit 62. Then, in this state, the sensor controller 31 acquires the strength of the pen signal (strength of the pen AC magnetic field) input to the Y-axis circuit 62. This causes the loop coil LCy connected to the Y-axis circuit 62 to function as an Rx coil. The sensor controller 31 executes the above-described series of processes, from outputting the AC current to acquiring the pen signal strength, for each loop coil LCy, thereby acquiring the pen signal strength for each loop coil LCy. 2 shows an example of the intensity of the pen signal thus acquired. The sensor controller 31 derives the Y coordinate of the electromagnetic induction pen 2 based on the acquired distribution of the intensity in the Y direction.

[0037] Next, the sensor controller 31 switches X and Y and performs the same process as above. That is, it switches the switch 53 to the input terminal of the X-axis circuit 63, the switch 52 to the output terminal of the Y-axis circuit 62, and the switch 50 to one of the loop coils LCy. Next, the sensor controller 31 starts outputting AC current from the Y-axis circuit 62. After a predetermined time has elapsed since the start of output, it stops outputting AC current and controls the switch 51 so that one of the loop coils LCx is connected to the input terminal of the X-axis circuit 63. In this state, the sensor controller 31 acquires the strength of the pen signal input to the X-axis circuit 63. The sensor controller 31 executes the above-described series of processes, from outputting AC current to acquiring the pen signal strength, for each loop coil LCx, thereby acquiring the pen signal strength for each loop coil LCx. The table shown next to the X-axis circuit 63 in FIG. 2 shows an example of the pen signal strength thus acquired. The sensor controller 31 derives the X coordinate of the electromagnetic induction pen 2 based on the acquired X-axis strength distribution.

[0038] 2 calculates the X coordinate and the Y coordinate separately based on the distribution in the X direction and the Y direction, respectively, and then derives the position of the electromagnetic induction pen 2 by combining the two calculated coordinates.

[0039] Referring next to FIG. 3, this example differs from the example shown in FIG. 2 in that the switch circuit 30 does not have switches 52 and 53, and the sensor controller 31 has a Tx circuit 60 and an Rx circuit 61 instead of a Y-axis circuit 62 and an X-axis circuit 63.

[0040] The switch 50 is similar to the switch 50 in the example of Fig. 2 except that the common terminal is connected to the output terminal of the Tx circuit 60 via a buffer. The switch 51 is similar to the switch 51 in the example of Fig. 2 except that the common terminal is connected to the input terminal of the Rx circuit 61 via a buffer. The other ends of each loop coil LCy and each loop coil LCx are grounded, as in the example of Fig. 2.

[0041] In the example shown in FIG. 3 , the sensor controller 31 starts outputting an AC current from the Tx circuit 60 with the switch 50 switched to one of the loop coils LCy. This causes the loop coil LCy connected to the Tx circuit 60 to emit an AC magnetic field, causing that loop coil LCy to function as a Tx coil. After a predetermined time has elapsed since the start of output, the sensor controller 31 stops outputting the AC current and controls the switch 51 to connect one of the loop coils LCy to the Rx circuit 61. Then, in this state, the sensor controller 31 acquires the strength of the pen signal (strength of the pen AC magnetic field) input to the Rx circuit 61. As a result, the loop coil LCx connected to the Rx circuit 61 functions as an Rx coil. The sensor controller 31 executes this process for all combinations of the loop coils LCy and LCx, thereby acquiring the strength of the pen signal at each intersection of the loop coils LCy and LCx. The table shown next to the Rx circuit 61 in FIG. 3 shows an example of the strength of the pen signal thus acquired. The sensor controller 31 is configured to derive the position of the electromagnetic induction pen 2 based on the two-dimensional distribution of the intensity of the acquired pen signal.

[0042] 4, the switch circuit 30 according to this example differs from the switch circuit 30 shown in FIG. 3 in that it does not have the switch 51. One end of each loop coil LCx is connected to the input end of the Rx circuit 61 without going through the switch 51. Although not shown, the Rx circuit 61 according to the example of FIG. 4 incorporates receiving circuits equal in number to the loop coils LCx.

[0043] The processing performed by the sensor controller 31 in the example of FIG. 4 is basically the same as the processing performed by the sensor controller 31 in the example of FIG. 3 , but differs from the processing performed by the sensor controller 31 in the example of FIG. 3 in that after an alternating magnetic field is transmitted from the loop coil LCy, the strength of the pen signals input to the Rx circuit 61 via each loop coil LCx is simultaneously acquired. The sensor controller 31 performs this processing for each loop coil LCy to acquire the strength of the pen signal (strength of the pen alternating magnetic field) at each intersection of the loop coil LCy and the loop coil LCx. The table shown next to the Rx circuit 61 in FIG. 4 shows an example of the strength of the pen signal thus acquired. The sensor controller 31 is configured to derive the position of the electromagnetic induction pen 2 based on the two-dimensional distribution of the acquired pen signal strength.

[0044] The above has described three exemplary principles for deriving the position of the electromagnetic induction pen 2. The position detection device 3 according to this embodiment is configured to derive the position of the electromagnetic induction pen 2 by utilizing the principle shown in Fig. 4 out of these principles. Next, the layer structure of the structure 33 according to this embodiment will be described.

[0045] 5 is a diagram showing the layer structure of the structure 33. As shown in the figure, the structure 33 is composed of, in order from the panel surface 3a side, a cover film 40, an Rx electrode layer 42R, a display image generating layer 43a, a backplane 43b, a support plate 45, a Tx electrode layer 42T, an adhesive layer 72, and a magnetic shield 46. Of these, the display 43 is composed of the touch sensor 41, the Rx electrode layer 42R, the display image generating layer 43a, and the backplane 43b. The cover film 40 and the Rx electrode layer 42R are bonded together by an adhesive layer 70, the backplane 43b and the support plate 45 are bonded together by an adhesive layer 71, and the support plate 45, the Tx electrode layer 42T formed on its surface, and the magnetic shield 46 are bonded together by an adhesive layer 72.

[0046] The Rx electrode layer 42R is a layer on which the Rx coil of the EMR sensor 42 is disposed, and in this embodiment, is configured to also include the touch sensor 41. The Rx electrode layer 42R will be described in detail later with reference to FIG.

[0047] The Tx electrode layer 42T is a layer on which the Tx coil of the EMR sensor 42 is disposed. The Tx coil of the EMR sensor 42 is formed by printing a conductive material such as copper or silver on the underside of the support plate 45. Further details of the Tx electrode layer 42T will be described in detail later with reference to FIGS. 6 and 7.

[0048] The display image generating layer 43a is a layer that generates a display image under the control of a drive circuit in the backplane 43b. If the display 43 is a liquid crystal display, the display image generating layer 43a includes liquid crystal configured to be able to control the polarization direction for each pixel. If the display 43 is an organic EL display, the display image generating layer 43a includes organic material configured to be able to control the blinking for each pixel. The backplane 43b includes a drive circuit that drives the liquid crystal or organic material in the display image generating layer 43a in accordance with a video signal supplied from the host processor 32.

[0049] The support plate 45 is a plate-shaped member provided to protect the display 43 from impact. The "plate PT" shown in FIG. 7 of Patent Document 2 and the "supporter SP" shown in FIG. 7 of Patent Document 3 are examples of such support plates. The support plate 45 is made of a rigid substrate with low conductivity and rigidity (e.g., a glass epoxy substrate such as FR4 (Flame Retardant Type 4)). The support plate 45 is made of a low-conductivity material to avoid affecting the electromagnetic induction used by the EMR sensor 42. The support plate 45 also has a structure that enables bending while maintaining durability. This structure may be, for example, a groove such as the "grooves H" described in Patent Document 2, or multiple holes arranged along a bending axis BA. This allows the support plate 45 to be bent about the bending axis BA shown in the figure.

[0050] FIG. 6 is a diagram showing the planar configuration of the Tx electrode layer 42T. As shown in the figure, the Tx electrode layer 42T has a configuration in which a coil (hereinafter referred to as a "comb coil") is formed in one layer on the underside of the support plate 45. The coil is configured by connecting one end of a plurality of teeth 100 extending in the x direction to a base 101 extending in the y direction. When the Tx coil or Rx coil of the EMR sensor 42 is provided separately from the Tx electrode or Rx electrode constituting the touch sensor 41, it is preferable to form the Tx coil or Rx coil as a comb coil, as in the Tx electrode layer 42T shown in FIG. 6. The teeth 100 are arranged in a row at equal intervals in the y direction. The other end of each tooth 100 is provided with a pad 102 that is crimped and connected to a connector terminal provided on the surface of the flexible printed circuit board 80 shown in FIG. 5. The pads 102 are arranged in a row along one side of the support plate 45 extending in the y direction. Although FIG. 6 shows an example in which the number of tooth portions 100 is 16, this is merely an example, and the number of tooth portions 100 is not limited to 16.

[0051] 6, the arrangement of the components constituting the Tx electrode layer 42T is determined so that the only component arranged across the bending axis BA is the base 101. This makes it possible to minimize the possibility of disconnection occurring in the Tx electrode layer 42T when the structure 33 is bent along the bending axis BA.

[0052] The symbol "T" shown in FIG. 0 " ~ "T 11 " represents an individual Tx coil formed by the comb coils in the Tx electrode layer 42T. That is, the comb coils in the Tx electrode layer 42T are divided into 12 Tx coils T 0 ~T 11 This will be described in detail below with reference to FIG.

[0053] 7 is a diagram showing the electrical configuration of the Tx electrode layer 42T. The switch circuit 30 according to this embodiment is configured to have a switch 55 for each tooth 100. Each switch 55 is a triple-throw single-pole switch, and its common terminal is connected to the other end of the corresponding tooth 100. In addition, the second selection terminal of each switch 55 is connected to the open end.

[0054] The Tx circuit 60 is configured to be able to output an AC current Tx and an AC current Tx_inv obtained by inverting the phase of the AC current Tx. The first selection terminals of the switches 55 are commonly connected to the output terminal of the Tx circuit 60 for the AC current Tx, and the third selection terminals are commonly connected to the output terminal of the Tx circuit 60 for the AC current Tx_inv.

[0055] When the sensor controller 31 transmits an alternating magnetic field from the Tx electrode layer 42T, it first selects one of the teeth 100, switches the two switches 55 corresponding to the two teeth 100 adjacent on one side to the first selection terminal side, and switches the two switches 55 corresponding to the two teeth 100 adjacent on the other side to the third selection terminal side. For the other switches 55, the sensor controller 31 sets the second selection terminal to a state in which it has selected the second selection terminal. In FIG. 7, the "T 5 10B shows a state in which the sensor controller 31 has selected the tooth portion 100 located at the position indicated by "."

[0056] After switching the switches 55 as described above, the sensor controller 31 starts outputting the AC currents Tx and Tx_inv from the Tx circuit 60. Then, the two adjacent teeth 100 (in the example of FIG. 7 ) on one side of the selected teeth 100 are switched. 3 " "T 4 An AC current Tx flows through each tooth 100 at a position indicated by "T" in the example of FIG. 7, and two adjacent tooth 100 on the other side of the selected tooth 100 (in the example of FIG. 7, indicated by "T" in the example of FIG. 7) 6 " "T 7 Since an AC current Tx_inv flows through each tooth 100 (located at the position indicated by ""), a virtual loop coil is formed with the tooth 100 selected by the sensor controller 31 as its center, and an alternating magnetic field is emitted from this virtual loop coil. The Tx coil in the Tx electrode layer 42T is constituted by the virtual loop coil thus formed.

[0057] 8 is a diagram showing the planar configuration and electrical configuration of the Rx electrode layer 42R. Here, the Rx electrode layer 42R has a two-layer structure and is configured to have another layer in addition to the layer shown in FIG. 8. The Tx electrode (not shown) of the touch sensor 41 is formed on this other layer. The following description will continue focusing on the layers shown in FIG. 8.

[0058] As shown in FIG. 8, the Rx electrode layer 42R includes N+1 coil-shaped electrodes R that respectively constitute the Rx coil of the EMR sensor 42 and the Rx electrode of the touch sensor 41. 0 ~R N In the following description, the coil electrodes R 0 ~R N When there is no need to particularly distinguish between them, they may be collectively referred to as "coil electrodes R." The coil electrodes R are arranged side by side in the x direction so as not to overlap each other.

[0059] Each coil electrode R is formed of a U-shaped (Π-shaped) conductor, with one end of each of two conductors 111, 112 extending parallel to each other in the y direction connected by a connection wiring 110 extending in the x direction. The connection wiring 110 extends outside the active area A and is formed of an opaque plate-like conductor. When the Tx electrode or Rx electrode constituting the touch sensor 41 is used in common with the Tx coil or Rx coil of the EMR sensor 42, it is preferable to use a U-shaped (Π-shaped) conductor, as in the coil electrode R shown in FIG. 8 . If the coil electrode R were formed using the comb-shaped coil described above, the entire electrode would form a single large conductor, resulting in excessive wiring capacitance and making it difficult to function as the Tx electrode or Rx electrode of the touch sensor 41. However, if the coil electrode R were formed using a U-shaped (Π-shaped) conductor, the coil electrodes R would be electrically isolated from each other, eliminating this problem. Furthermore, by forming each coil-shaped electrode R in a U-shape (Π-shape), it becomes possible to form each coil-shaped electrode R so that they do not overlap each other, as illustrated in Figure 8, and in this way it becomes possible to form the Rx electrode layer 42R and the Rx electrode of the touch sensor 41 in a single layer.

[0060] Of the conductors 111 and 112 of each coiled electrode R, those that extend so as to overlap within the active area A are configured as mesh electrodes (portions represented by intersecting thin lines in FIG. 8) having a predetermined repeated local pattern. On the other hand, of the conductors 111 and 112 of each coiled electrode R, those that extend only outside the active area A are configured as opaque plate-like conductors similar to the connection wiring 110. In the example of FIG. 8, N coiled electrodes R 0 ~R N The coil electrodes R located at both ends of 0 and coil electrode R N Coil-shaped electrode R other than 1 ~R N-1 The conductors 111 and 112 are both extended so as to overlap within the active area A and are configured as mesh electrodes. 0 The conductor 112 (coil electrode R1 the conductor closest to the coil electrode R N The conductor 111 (coil electrode R N-1 The coil-shaped electrode R 0 The conductor 111 and the coil electrode R N The conductor 112 extends only outside the active area A and is made of an opaque metal conductor.

[0061] The conductors 111, 112 of each coil electrode R that extend into the active area A are configured as mesh electrodes in order to minimize the effect on the visibility of images displayed by the display 43. In order to reduce variations in visibility within the active area A, a dummy mesh electrode may be formed in the region between the conductors 111, 112. A transparent electrode such as ITO (indium tin oxide) may be used instead of the mesh electrode.

[0062] The switch circuit 30 according to this embodiment is configured to have a switch 56 for each coiled electrode R. Each switch 56 is configured as a double-throw, single-pole switch having a selection terminal connected to one end of the corresponding coiled electrode R, a selection terminal grounded, and a common terminal connected to the other end of the corresponding coiled electrode R. The Rx circuit 61 also has an inverting amplifier circuit 90 for each coiled electrode R, and one end of each coiled electrode R is connected to the selection terminal of the corresponding switch 56 as well as to the input terminal of the corresponding inverting amplifier circuit 90.

[0063] When using each coiled electrode R as the Rx coil of the EMR sensor, the sensor controller 31 switches each switch 56 to the grounded selection terminal side. This causes the connection state of each coiled electrode R to be the same as the connection state of each loop coil LCx shown in Fig. 4, so that the sensor controller 31 can derive the position of the electromagnetic induction pen 2 on the panel surface 3a by performing the same process as that described with reference to Fig. 4.

[0064] On the other hand, when each coil electrode R is used as an Rx electrode of the touch sensor 41, the sensor controller 31 switches each switch 56 to the selection terminal connected to one end of the corresponding coil electrode R. This causes each coil electrode R to function as a single linear electrode, and a state occurs in which the linear electrode is connected to each inverting amplifier circuit 90. Therefore, the sensor controller 31 can derive the position of the finger on the panel surface 3 a by performing the same processing as that described with reference to FIG.

[0065] As described above, according to the position detection system 1 of the present embodiment, the Rx electrode layer 42R is disposed on the side opposite to the side on which the Tx electrode layer 42T is disposed, with the display image generation layer at the center. Therefore, it is possible to incorporate one of the electrodes (the Rx electrode layer 42R in this embodiment) into the display 43 together with the touch sensor 41 (and thus enable precise positioning relative to the bending axis BA), and then devise a way to fold only the other electrode (the Tx electrode layer 42T in this embodiment). This devise involves forming the Tx electrode layer 42T in a single layer, and further arranging the only structure straddling the bending axis BA to be a single wire (specifically, the base 101). With this level of structure straddling the bending axis BA, even if it is difficult to precisely determine the position of each wire in the Tx electrode layer 42T relative to the bending axis BA, the Tx electrode layer 42T can be folded. Therefore, it can be said that the position detection system 1 according to this embodiment makes it possible to provide a position detection device that includes a foldable display and is compatible with position detection by an electromagnetic induction pen using the EMR method.

[0066] In this embodiment, an example in which the Tx electrode layer 42T is configured using an interdigital coil has been described. However, the Rx electrode layer 42R may also be configured using a similar interdigital coil. The Tx electrode layer 42T may also be configured using a plurality of coiled electrodes arranged so as not to overlap one another. In this case, if it is possible to determine the position of each coiled electrode so that the bending axis BA is included in the wiring-free area between the coiled electrodes, this may be done. However, if the wiring-free area between the coiled electrodes is narrow and such positioning is difficult, the position of each coiled electrode may be determined so that wiring corresponding to the connection wiring 110 shown in FIG. 8 is arranged across the bending axis BA.

[0067] 9 is a diagram showing the layer structure of structure 33 included in position detection device 3 according to a first modified example of the present embodiment. Position detection device 3 according to this modified example differs from position detection device 3 according to the present embodiment in that support plate 45 is divided into two support plates 45-1 and 45-2, with bending axis BA as the boundary.

[0068] FIG. 10 is a diagram showing the planar configuration of the Tx electrode layer 42T according to this modification. As shown in the figure, this modification requires the Tx electrode layer 42T to be positioned across the surfaces of the two separate support plates 45-1 and 45-2. Therefore, a bending portion 104 made of a flexible material or structure is provided between the support plates 45-1 and 45-2, and a connecting conductor 103 extending across the bending axis BA is formed on the surface of the bending portion 104. The connecting conductor 103 electrically connects the base portions 101 provided on each of the support plates 45-1 and 45-2, and is preferably formed of a material or structure that is less susceptible to breakage due to bending operations than the base portions 101 and the tooth portions 100. By adopting the above configuration, this modification also makes it possible to provide a position detection device that includes a foldable display and is compatible with EMR-based electromagnetic induction pen position detection.

[0069] 11 is a diagram showing the layer structure of the structure 33 included in a position detection device 3 according to a second modified example of the present embodiment. The position detection device 3 according to this modified example differs from the position detection device 3 according to the first modified example in that it does not have the adhesive layer 72 or the magnetic shield 46, and in that the Tx electrode layer 42T is disposed on the upper surfaces of the support plates 45-1 and 45-2. In this way, when the adhesive layer 72 and the magnetic shield 46 are not provided, it is preferable to dispose the Tx electrode layer 42T on the upper surfaces of the support plates 45-1 and 45-2, rather than on the lower surfaces thereof.

[0070] 12 is a diagram showing the layer structure of the structure 33 included in a position detection device 3 according to a third modified example of the present embodiment. The position detection device 3 according to this modified example differs from the position detection device 3 according to the present embodiment in that the positions of the Tx electrode layer 42T and the Rx electrode layer 42R are swapped. In this modified example, the touch sensor 41 is included in the Tx electrode layer 42T. In this manner, the Tx electrode layer 42T may be provided in the display 43, and the Rx electrode layer 42R may be provided on the surface of the support plate 45.

[0071] FIG. 13 is a diagram showing the layer structure of a structure 33 included in a position detection device 3 according to a fourth modification of the present embodiment. The position detection device 3 according to this modification differs from the position detection device 3 according to the third modification in that the Rx electrode layer 42R is formed on the upper surface of the support plate 45. However, like the Rx electrode layer 42R according to the third modification, the Rx electrode layer 42R according to this modification is crimped to connector terminals provided on the surface of the flexible printed circuit board 80 on the lower surface of the support plate 45. To achieve this, the structure 33 according to this modification has multiple crimping pads on the lower surface of the support plate 45, and each Rx coil constituting the Rx electrode layer 42R is connected to each of these multiple pads by via conductors (not shown). In this way, the Rx electrode layer 42R may be connected to the flexible printed circuit board 80 on the surface opposite to the surface of the support plate 45 on which it is formed.

[0072] FIG. 14 is a diagram showing the layer structure of the structure 33 included in a position detection device 3 according to a fifth modified example of the present embodiment. The position detection device 3 according to this modified example differs from the position detection device 3 according to the present embodiment in that the Rx electrode layer 42R is provided on the same layer as the backplane 43b rather than the touch sensor 41. As such, the Rx electrode layer 42R may be provided on the same layer as the backplane 43b. In this case, each Rx coil extends so as to avoid pixel drive elements and wiring that would normally be disposed within the backplane 43b. Although not shown, the Tx electrode layer 42T according to the third modified example shown in FIG. 12 may also be provided on the same layer as the backplane 43b, similar to the Rx electrode layer 42R according to this modified example.

[0073] Next, a position detection system 1 according to a second embodiment of the present invention will be described. The position detection system 1 according to this embodiment differs from the position detection system 1 according to the first embodiment in that the Rx electrode layer 42R is disposed on the lower surface of the support plate 45 and the Tx electrode layer 42T is disposed on the upper surface of the support plate 45. In other respects, the position detection system 1 according to this embodiment is the same as the position detection system 1 according to the first embodiment, and therefore the following description will focus on the differences from the position detection system 1 according to the first embodiment.

[0074] 15 is a diagram showing the layer structure of the structure 33 included in the position detection device 3 according to this embodiment. As shown in the figure, in the position detection device 3 according to this embodiment, the Rx electrode layer 42R is disposed on the lower surface of the support plate 45, and the Tx electrode layer 42T is disposed on the upper surface of the support plate 45. Each Rx coil in the Rx electrode layer 42R and each Tx coil in the Tx electrode layer 42T are each formed of a single layer. Specifically, each of the Rx coils and the Tx coils may be formed of an interdigital coil similar to those described with reference to FIGS. 6 and 7, or may be formed of a plurality of coils arranged so as not to overlap each other.

[0075] The pads, together with the Rx coil and the Tx coil, that are crimped to the connector terminals of the flexible printed circuit board 80 are provided on the underside of the support plate 45. Each Rx coil in the Rx electrode layer 42R is connected to a corresponding pad by wiring on the same surface (not shown), and each Tx coil in the Tx electrode layer 42T is connected to a corresponding pad by a via conductor (not shown).

[0076] As described above, according to the position detection system 1 of this embodiment, the Rx coils in the Rx electrode layer 42R and the Tx coils in the Tx electrode layer 42T are each formed in a single layer on each surface of the support plate 45, so that, compared to forming them in multiple layers, even if it is difficult to precisely determine the position of the wiring in each layer relative to the bending axis BA, it is possible to prevent breaks in the wiring due to bending. Therefore, it can be said that the position detection system 1 of this embodiment also makes it possible to provide a position detection device that includes a foldable display and is compatible with position detection of an electromagnetic induction pen using the EMR system.

[0077] Furthermore, according to the position detection system 1 of this embodiment, it is possible to achieve a thinner structure 33 including the EMR sensor 42 compared to when one or both of the Rx coils in the Rx electrode layer 42R and the Tx coils in the Tx electrode layer 42T are formed in multiple layers.

[0078] 16 is a diagram showing the layer structure of the structure 33 included in a position detection device 3 according to a first modification of the present embodiment. The position detection device 3 according to this modification differs from the position detection device 3 according to the present embodiment in that an Rx electrode layer 42R is formed on the upper surface of a support plate 45 and a Tx electrode layer 42T is formed on the lower surface of the support plate 45. In this modification, each Tx coil in the Tx electrode layer 42T is connected to a corresponding pad by wiring within the same plane (not shown), and each Rx coil in the Rx electrode layer 42R is connected to a corresponding pad by a via conductor (not shown). For the same reasons as in the present embodiment, the configuration of this modification also makes it possible to provide a position detection device that includes a foldable display and is compatible with position detection by an electromagnetic induction pen using an EMR system, and also makes it possible to achieve a thinner structure 33 including an EMR sensor 42.

[0079] FIG. 17( a) is a diagram showing the upper surface of a support plate 45 included in a position detection device 3 according to a second modified example of the present embodiment, and FIG. 17( b) is a diagram showing the lower surface of the support plate 45 included in the position detection device 3 according to the second modified example of the present embodiment. The position detection device 3 according to this modified example differs from the position detection device 3 according to the present embodiment in that the Rx electrode layer 42R and the Tx electrode layer 42T are formed on both the upper and lower surfaces of the support plate 45. In this modified example, of the wiring formed on the Rx electrode layer 42R and the Tx electrode layer 42T, the portions extending in the y direction are formed on the upper surface of the support plate 45, and the portions extending in the x direction are formed on the lower surface of the support plate 45. The portions of each Tx coil and each Rx coil are connected to each other by via conductors VC, thereby constituting a single coil in a planar view. Both ends of each Tx coil and each Rx coil are connected to pads PD, respectively. For the same reasons as in the present embodiment, the configuration of this modified example also makes it possible to provide a position detection device that includes a foldable display and is compatible with position detection by an electromagnetic induction pen using the EMR system, and also makes it possible to achieve a thinner structure 33 that includes the EMR sensor 42. It is to be noted that, of course, the Rx electrode layer 42R and the Tx electrode layer 42T may be interchanged in Figures 17(a) and 17(b).

[0080] Next, a position detection system 1 according to a third embodiment of the present invention will be described. The position detection system 1 according to this embodiment differs from the position detection system 1 according to the first embodiment in that the display 43 is not foldable, and the Tx electrode layer 42T is provided in the same layer as the backplane 43b, rather than on the surface of the support plate 45. In other respects, the position detection system 1 according to this embodiment is the same as the position detection system 1 according to the first embodiment, and therefore the following description will focus on the differences from the position detection system 1 according to the first embodiment.

[0081] 18 is a diagram showing the layer structure of the structure 33 included in the position detection device 3 according to the present embodiment. As can be seen by comparing Fig. 18 with Fig. 5, the structure 33 according to the present embodiment differs from the structure 33 according to the first embodiment in that it has a cover glass 44 instead of the cover film 40, does not have the support plate 45, the magnetic shield 46, or the adhesive layers 71 and 72, and the Tx electrode layer 42T is provided in the same layer as the backplane 43b.

[0082] The reason why the structure 33 according to this embodiment has the cover glass 44 instead of the cover film 40 is that bending is not required. The cover glass 44 does not bend, but on the other hand, has higher strength and durability than the cover film 40, so when bending is not required, it is preferable to use the cover glass 44 instead of the cover film 40. Because the cover glass 44 with high strength is used, the structure 33 according to this embodiment does not require the support plate 45.

[0083] Each Rx coil in the Rx electrode layer 42R according to this embodiment is formed as a single layer on one surface (specifically, the upper surface) of the display image generating layer 43a. The specific configuration of each Rx coil may be the same as that described with reference to FIG. 8 . That is, the multiple Rx coils may be formed from multiple coil-shaped electrodes R that do not overlap each other, and of the conductors 111 and 112 that make up each coil-shaped electrode R, those that extend into the active area A may be formed from mesh electrodes, and those that extend only outside the active area A may be formed from opaque plate-shaped conductors. In addition, connection wiring 110, which is an opaque plate-shaped conductor that connects one end of each of the conductors 111 and 112, may be provided outside the active area A.

[0084] Furthermore, each Tx coil in the Tx electrode layer 42T according to this embodiment is formed in one layer on the same layer as the backplane 43b. Specifically, similar to each Rx coil in the Rx electrode layer 42R described with reference to Fig. 14, each Tx coil may be extended so as to avoid pixel drive elements and wiring that would otherwise be arranged in the backplane 43b. Furthermore, the planar shape of the Tx electrode layer 42T may be a comb-shaped coil as described with reference to Fig. 6.

[0085] As described above, according to the position detection system 1 of this embodiment, each Rx coil in the Rx electrode layer 42R and each Tx coil in the Tx electrode layer 42T are formed in a single layer, making it possible to reduce the thickness of the structure 33 including the EMR sensor 42.

[0086] In the position detection device 3 according to this embodiment, bending of the structure 33 does not pose a problem, but the configurations of the Rx electrode layer 42R and the Tx electrode layer 42T in this embodiment can also be applied to the structure 33 described in the first embodiment. In this case, it becomes possible to precisely position each of the wirings in the Rx electrode layer 42R and each of the wirings in the Tx electrode layer 42T with respect to the bending axis BA, making it possible to provide a position detection device that includes a foldable display and is compatible with position detection of an electromagnetic induction pen using the EMR system.

[0087] 19 is a diagram showing the layer structure of the structure 33 included in the position detection device 3 according to a first modified example of the present embodiment. The position detection device 3 according to this modified example differs from the position detection device 3 according to the present embodiment in that both the Rx coil and the Tx coil constituting the EMR sensor 42 are formed in the same layer as the backplane 43b. According to this modified example, although the Rx coil of the EMR sensor 42 and the Rx electrode of the touch sensor 41 cannot be configured with the same coil-shaped electrode, each of the Tx coil and the Rx coil of the EMR sensor 42 can be configured with an interdigital coil similar to those described with reference to FIGS. 6 and 7 or with multiple coil-shaped electrodes arranged so as not to overlap. This makes it possible to reduce the thickness of the structure 33 including the EMR sensor 42 compared to when one or both of the Tx coil and the Rx coil of the EMR sensor 42 are configured with a multi-layer structure.

[0088] FIG. 20 is a diagram showing the layer structure of the structure 33 included in a position detection device 3 according to a second modification of the present embodiment. The position detection device 3 according to this modification differs from the position detection device 3 according to the present embodiment in that the Tx electrode layer 42T is not provided within the display 43 but is disposed below the display 43 via an adhesive layer 71. In this manner, the Tx electrode layer 42T may be disposed below the display 43 via the adhesive layer 71. In this case, the specific configuration of the Tx electrode layer 42T may be a comb-shaped coil similar to that described with reference to FIGS. 6 and 7 , or may be a plurality of electrically separated coil-shaped electrodes. In the latter case, the plurality of Tx coils may be configured using multiple layers (i.e., overlapping), or may be configured in a single layer (i.e., non-overlapping). Forming the plurality of Tx coils in a single layer allows the structure 33 including the EMR sensor 42 to be made thinner. Furthermore, it is possible to provide a position detection device that includes a foldable display and is compatible with position detection by an EMR-based electromagnetic induction pen.

[0089] Next, a position detection system 1 according to a fourth embodiment of the present invention will be described. FIG. 21 is a diagram showing the layer structure of a structure 33 included in a position detection device 3 according to this embodiment. As shown in the figure, the position detection system 1 according to this embodiment differs from the position detection system 1 according to the third embodiment in that an integrated sensor 47 (integrated sensor layer) is provided on the upper surface of the display image generation layer 43a instead of the Rx electrode layer 42R including the touch sensor 41, and the Tx electrode layer 42T is not provided on the same layer as the backplane 43b. The integrated sensor 47 integrates the touch sensor 41 and the EMR sensor 42 and fulfills the functions of both the touch sensor 41 and the EMR sensor 42. In other respects, the position detection system 1 according to the third embodiment is similar to the position detection system 1 according to the third embodiment, so the following description will focus on the differences from the position detection system 1 according to the third embodiment.

[0090] 22 to 24 are diagrams showing the planar configuration of the integrated sensor 47. The integrated sensor 47 according to this embodiment is formed using two layers, with Fig. 22 showing the configuration of the lower layer and Fig. 23 showing the configuration of the upper layer. Fig. 24 also shows both layers superimposed on top of each other.

[0091] Referring first to FIG. 22 , the lower layer includes a plurality of square mesh electrodes 120 arranged in a close-packed grid pattern at a 45-degree angle relative to both the x and y directions. Each mesh electrode 120 has a square hollow space within which a square mesh electrode 121 is disposed. Adjacent mesh electrodes 120, as well as mesh electrodes 121 and the mesh electrodes 120 within them, are insulated from each other by leaving a small gap between them. Hereinafter, the columns of the mesh electrodes 120 arranged in a close-packed grid pattern are identified by the illustrated X coordinates (X1 to X11), and the rows are identified by the illustrated Y coordinates (Y1 to Y11).

[0092] The mesh electrodes 120 in the even-numbered rows (i.e., rows with Y coordinates of Y2, Y4, Y6, Y8, and Y10) are connected to other mesh electrodes 120 adjacent in the x direction by bridge conductors 122, which are mesh electrodes extending in the x direction. Each bridge conductor 122 is integrated with two mesh electrodes 120 adjacent in the x direction, while being insulated from two mesh electrodes 120 adjacent in the y direction by leaving a small gap between them. With the above configuration, a mesh conductor 130 extending in the x direction is formed for each even-numbered row of mesh electrodes 120.

[0093] 23 , jumper wirings 123 and 124 and connection wirings 125 are provided on the upper layer. The jumper wirings 123 are each composed of a plurality of linear conductors extending along the odd-numbered columns of the mesh electrode 120 (i.e., the columns with X coordinates X1, X3, X5, X7, X9, and X11). However, each linear conductor constituting the jumper wiring 123 is cut small at a position corresponding to the even-numbered rows of the mesh electrode 120. The linear conductors constituting the jumper wiring 123 are connected to each other by connection wirings 125 at the ends of the portions provided at one end in the y direction.

[0094] The jumper wiring 124 is composed of a plurality of linear conductors extending along the even-numbered columns (i.e., columns with X coordinates of X2, X4, X6, X8, and X10) of the mesh electrode 120. However, each linear conductor constituting the jumper wiring 124 is cut significantly at a position corresponding to the odd-numbered rows of the mesh electrode 120 (i.e., rows with Y coordinates of Y1, Y3, Y5, Y7, Y9, and Y11).

[0095] 24 , it can be seen that the jumper wiring 123 serves to connect the mesh electrodes 121 arranged in odd-numbered rows to one another, and the jumper wiring 124 serves to connect the mesh electrodes 120 arranged in even-numbered rows to one another. The jumper wiring 123 and the mesh electrodes 121, and the jumper wiring 124 and the mesh electrodes 120, are connected by via conductors (not shown). The mesh electrodes 121 arranged in odd-numbered rows are connected by the jumper wiring 123 to form each tooth 131 of the comb coil. The base of this comb coil is formed by the connection wiring 125. The mesh electrodes 121 arranged in even-numbered rows are connected by the jumper wiring 124 to form a linear conductor 132 extending in the y direction.

[0096] Here, in this embodiment, the term "jumper wiring" is used, but in some literature, wiring that has the same role as the "jumper wiring" in this embodiment in connecting wiring in other layers to each other is referred to by other terms such as "bridge wiring" or "connecting conductor," and the "jumper wiring" in this embodiment includes "bridge wiring" and "connecting conductor" in this sense.

[0097] Furthermore, in the above description, it was stated that the jumper wiring 123 serves to connect the plurality of mesh electrodes 121 arranged in odd-numbered rows to one another, but conversely, it can also be said that the plurality of mesh electrodes 121 arranged in odd-numbered rows serve to connect the plurality of jumper wirings 123 to one another, and in this sense, the plurality of mesh electrodes 121 arranged in odd-numbered rows can also be said to be "jumper wirings," "bridge wirings," or "connecting conductors." Similarly, it can also be said that the plurality of mesh electrodes 120 arranged in even-numbered rows serve to connect the plurality of jumper wirings 124 to one another, and in this sense, the plurality of mesh electrodes 120 arranged in even-numbered rows can also be said to be "jumper wirings," "bridge wirings," or "connecting conductors."

[0098] 25 and 26 are diagrams showing the electrical configuration of the integrated sensor 47. Fig. 25 shows the configuration when the integrated sensor 47 is used as an EMR sensor, and Fig. 26 shows the configuration when the integrated sensor 47 is used as a touch sensor.

[0099] 25, to use the integrated sensor 47 as an EMR sensor, the switch circuit 30 is configured with switches 57a, 57b, and 58. The sensor controller 31 is also configured with Tx circuits 60a and 60b and an Rx circuit 61a. The Tx circuits 60a and 60b have output terminals for the AC currents Tx and Tx_inv, respectively, as described with reference to FIG. 7, and the Rx circuit 61a has a differential amplifier with a non-inverting input terminal and an inverting input terminal.

[0100] The switch 57a is a multi-throw bipole switch including a first common terminal connected to the output terminal of the AC current Tx of the Tx circuit 60a, a second common terminal connected to the output terminal of the AC current Tx_inv of the Tx circuit 60a, and a plurality of selection terminals connected to one end of each of the plurality of mesh conductors 130. The switch 57b is a multi-throw bipole switch including a first common terminal connected to the output terminal of the AC current Tx_inv of the Tx circuit 60b, a second common terminal connected to the output terminal of the AC current Tx of the Tx circuit 60b, and a plurality of selection terminals connected to the other end of each of the plurality of mesh conductors 130. The switch 58 is a multi-throw bipole switch including a first common terminal and a second common terminal connected to the non-inverting input terminal and the inverting input terminal of the differential amplifier arranged in the Rx circuit 61a, respectively, and a plurality of selection terminals connected to the other end of each of the plurality of teeth 131 (the end opposite to the end connected to the connection wiring 125).

[0101] When the integrated sensor 47 is used to derive the position of the electromagnetic induction pen 2, the sensor controller 31 first selects one of the mesh conductors 130, and in the switch 57a, connects the selection terminal corresponding to the mesh conductor 130 adjacent on one side to the selected mesh conductor 130 to the first common terminal, and the selection terminal corresponding to the mesh conductor 130 adjacent on the other side to the second common terminal. Similarly, in the switch 57b, the sensor controller 31 connects the selection terminal corresponding to the mesh conductor 130 adjacent on one side to the selected mesh conductor 130 to the first common terminal, and the selection terminal corresponding to the mesh conductor 130 adjacent on the other side to the second common terminal.

[0102] Thereafter, the sensor controller 31 starts outputting the AC currents Tx and Tx_inv from the Tx circuits 60a and 60b, respectively. As a result, AC currents flow in opposite directions on both sides of the selected mesh conductor 130, forming a virtual Tx coil centered on the selected mesh conductor 130 and transmitting an AC magnetic field. After a specified time has elapsed since starting the output of the AC currents Tx and Tx_inv, the sensor controller 31 stops outputting the AC currents Tx and Tx_inv and controls the switch 58 to connect one of two adjacent teeth 131 to the non-inverting input terminal of the differential amplifier in the Rx circuit 61a and the other to the inverting input terminal of the differential amplifier in the Rx circuit 61a. As a result, a virtual Rx coil is formed by the two teeth 131 connected to the differential amplifier in the Rx circuit 61a and the connecting wiring 125 connecting them, and a pen signal generated by the pen AC magnetic field transmitted by the electromagnetic induction pen 2 in response to the AC magnetic field is output from the output terminal of the differential amplifier.

[0103] The sensor controller 31 executes the above process while changing the combination of the mesh conductor 130 to be selected and the teeth 131 to be connected to the differential amplifier in the Rx circuit 61a, thereby acquiring the strength of the pen signal (strength of the pen alternating magnetic field) at each intersection of the virtual Tx coil and the virtual Rx coil. Then, based on the two-dimensional distribution of the acquired pen signal strength, the position of the electromagnetic induction pen 2 on the panel surface 3a is derived.

[0104] Referring next to FIG. 26 , in order to use the integrated sensor 47 as a touch sensor, the switch circuit 30 includes switches 50a and 50b. The sensor controller 31 includes Tx circuits 60c and 60d and an Rx circuit 61b. The Tx circuit 60c is configured to output an AC current Tx, and the Tx circuit 60d is configured to output an AC current Tx_inv obtained by inverting the phase of the AC current Tx. The AC currents Tx and Tx_inv may be the same as or different from the AC currents Tx and Tx_inv (AC currents for the EMR sensor) described above. The Rx circuit 61b includes an inverting amplifier circuit for each linear conductor 132. This inverting amplifier circuit may be the same as the inverting amplifier circuit 90 shown in FIG. 8 . The input terminal of each inverting amplifier circuit is connected to one end of the corresponding linear conductor 132.

[0105] The switch 50a is a multi-throw single-pole switch that includes a common terminal connected to the output end of the AC current Tx of the Tx circuit 60c and a plurality of selection terminals connected to one end of each of the plurality of mesh conductors 130. The switch 50b is a multi-throw single-pole switch that includes a common terminal connected to the output end of the AC current Tx_inv of the Tx circuit 60d and a plurality of selection terminals connected to the other end of each of the plurality of mesh conductors 130.

[0106] When deriving the position of a finger using the integrated sensor 47, the sensor controller 31 first selects one of the mesh conductors 130, and connects the selection terminal corresponding to the selected mesh conductor 130 to the common terminal in each of the switches 50a and 50b.

[0107] Next, the sensor controller 31 simultaneously starts outputting the AC current Tx from the Tx circuit 60c and outputting the AC current Tx_inv from the Tx circuit 60d. While this output is continuing, the sensor controller 31 acquires the intensity of the signals (hereinafter referred to as "finger touch detection signals") output from the inverting amplifier circuits in the Rx circuit 61b.

[0108] The sensor controller 31 executes the above process while changing the selected mesh conductor 130, thereby acquiring the intensity of the finger touch detection signal at each intersection of the mesh conductor 130 and the linear conductor 132. Then, based on the two-dimensional distribution of the acquired intensity of the finger touch detection signal, the position of the finger on the panel surface 3 a is derived.

[0109] As described above, according to the position detection device 3 of this embodiment, the integrated sensor 47 that functions as both an EMR sensor and a touch sensor can be formed in two layers, so that it is possible to achieve a thin structure 33 including a touch sensor and an EMR sensor at a level equivalent to that of the position detection device 3 described in the third embodiment (shown in Figure 18), for example.

[0110] Furthermore, the integrated sensor 47 of this embodiment can also be applied to the structure 33 described in the first embodiment. In this case, it becomes possible to precisely position each wire of the integrated sensor 47 with respect to the folding axis BA, making it possible to provide a position detection device that includes a foldable display and is compatible with position detection of an electromagnetic induction pen using the EMR system.

[0111] In this embodiment, an example in which the integrated sensor 47 is formed in two layers has been described, but it goes without saying that it may be formed in three layers. For example, the Tx coil and Rx coil constituting the EMR sensor may be provided on the first and second layers, respectively, and the Tx electrode and Rx electrode constituting the touch sensor may both be provided on the third layer, and at the intersection of the Tx electrode and the Rx electrode, either the Tx electrode or the Rx electrode may be bypassed to the second layer using connection wiring provided on the second layer.

[0112] 27 is a diagram showing the layer structure of the structure 33 included in a position detection device 3 according to a first modified example of this embodiment. The position detection device 3 according to this modified example differs from the position detection device 3 according to this embodiment in that the integrated sensor 47 is arranged outside (above) the display 43 rather than inside it. The integrated sensor 47 and the display 43 are bonded together by an adhesive layer 73. This configuration also makes it possible to achieve a thinner structure 33 including a touch sensor and an EMR sensor, as with the position detection device 3 according to this embodiment.

[0113] FIG. 28 is a diagram showing the planar configuration of an integrated sensor 47 according to a second modified example of the present embodiment. This diagram corresponds to an enlarged view of a portion of the integrated sensor 47 shown in FIG. 24 . As can be seen by comparing FIG. 28 with FIG. 24 , the position detection device 3 according to this modified example differs from the position detection device 3 according to the present embodiment in that a set of mesh electrodes 121 are connected to each other by a plurality of jumper wires 123 running parallel to each other and in that a plurality of bypass wires 126 are provided at positions corresponding to the inside of each mesh electrode 121 in a plan view. The bypass wires 126 are wires provided in the same layer as the jumper wires 123. In FIG. 28 , circular portions provided at the ends of each jumper wire 123 and each bypass wire 126 represent the positions of via conductors connecting the jumper wires 123 or bypass wires 126 to the mesh electrode 121. This configuration makes it possible to reduce the wiring resistance of a virtual Rx coil formed by the tooth portions 131 and the connection wires 125 compared to the present embodiment.
