Abstract
Description
Electronic devices with flexible displays
[0001] Various embodiments of the present disclosure relate to an electronic device having a flexible display.
[0002] With the advancement of electronics, information, and communication technologies, a variety of functions are being integrated into a single portable communication device or electronic device. For example, smartphones incorporate functions such as audio playback, imaging, and electronic notebooks in addition to communication functions. Furthermore, the installation of additional applications allows smartphones to offer even more diverse functions.
[0003] As the use of personal or portable communication devices such as smartphones becomes more widespread, user demand for portability and ease of use is increasing. For example, a touchscreen display, while functioning as an output device that displays visual information, can also provide a virtual keypad that replaces mechanical input devices (e.g., button-type input devices). This allows portable communication devices or electronic devices to be miniaturized while still offering the same or improved usability (e.g., larger screens). On the other hand, the commercialization of flexible displays, such as foldable or rollable displays, is expected to further enhance the portability and ease of use of electronic devices.
[0004] Various embodiments of the present disclosure can provide a flexible display in which a plurality of patterns are provided in a bending region and a filling member having different hardnesses is filled in the plurality of patterns.
[0005] An electronic device according to one embodiment of the present disclosure may include a first housing. The electronic device may include a second housing foldably connected to the first housing through a hinge module. The electronic device may include a flexible display supported by the first housing and the second housing. The flexible display may include a glass layer having a first surface and a second surface opposite the first surface, and including a plurality of first patterns recessed from the first surface and a plurality of second patterns recessed from the second surface. The flexible display may include a first filling member filled in the plurality of first patterns. The flexible display may include a second filling member filled in the plurality of second patterns and having a lower hardness than the first filling member.
[0006] Various embodiments of the present disclosure can reduce the difference in touch sensation between the glass layer and the filling member by filling the plurality of first patterns exposed to the outside with a first filling member having substantially the same hardness as the glass layer, in a glass layer having a plurality of patterns formed in an area corresponding to a bending area of a flexible display.
[0007] In addition, the bendability of the flexible display can be improved by filling a second filling member having a lower hardness than the first filling member into a plurality of second patterns opposite to the plurality of first patterns.
[0008] The effects that can be achieved by the exemplary embodiments of the present disclosure can be clearly derived and understood by those skilled in the art to which the exemplary embodiments of the present disclosure pertain, from the following description. In other words, unintended effects resulting from the implementation of the exemplary embodiments of the present disclosure can also be derived by those skilled in the art from the exemplary embodiments of the present disclosure.

[0120] In one embodiment, the polarizing layer (320), the display panel (330), the polymer layer (340), the metal sheet layer (350), the digitizer (360), and the reinforcing plate (370) may include through holes (3201, 3301, 3401, 3501, 3601, 3701). In one embodiment, the display panel (330) and / or the polarizing layer (320) may eliminate the need for through holes (3201, 3301) by controlling the transmittance of the corresponding area. In one embodiment, the size of the through holes (3201, 3301, 3401, 3501, 3601, 3701) may be formed based on the size of the camera device (205) and / or the angle of view of the camera device (205), and the sizes of each of the through holes (3201, 3301, 3401, 3501, 3601, 3701) may be different from each other.
[0121] According to one embodiment, the window layer (310) may include a glass layer (e.g., the glass layer (311) of FIG. 7). According to one embodiment, the glass layer (311) is disposed in an area corresponding to a bendable portion (e.g., the bendable portion (230c) of FIG. 2B) of the flexible display (300) and includes a plurality of patterns (e.g., a plurality of first patterns (3113) and a plurality of second patterns (3114) of FIG. 7) formed lower than a surface of the glass layer (311), thereby helping to improve the touch feeling and / or bendability of the flexible display (300).
[0122] According to one embodiment, the plurality of patterns (3113, 3114) may be filled with filling members (e.g., the first filling member (312) and the second filling member (313) of FIG. 7) having different moduli, hardnesses, or molecular weights inside each pattern, thereby improving the touch sensitivity and / or flexibility of the flexible display (300).
[0123] Below, the window layer (310) will be described in detail.
[0124] FIG. 6 is a plan view of a window layer according to various embodiments of the present disclosure. FIG. 7 is a cross-sectional view taken along line I-I' illustrated in FIG. 6. FIG. 8 is an enlarged view of portion A illustrated in FIG. 6.
[0125] Referring to FIGS. 6 to 8, a window layer (310) according to one embodiment may include a first region (310a) corresponding to a first housing (e.g., the first housing (210) of FIG. 2a) of an electronic device (e.g., the electronic device (200) of FIG. 2a), a second region (310b) corresponding to a second housing (e.g., the second housing (220) of FIG. 2a), and a third region (310c) corresponding to a bendable portion (e.g., the bendable portion (230c) of FIG. 2b).
[0126] According to one embodiment, the third region (310c) can be bendably deformed together with the display panel (e.g., the display panel (330) of FIG. 5) according to the folding operation of the electronic device (200) with respect to the folding axis (F).
[0127] According to one embodiment, the window layer (310) may include a glass layer (311) having a first side (3111) facing in an external direction of the electronic device (200) (e.g., +z-axis direction) and a second side (3112) facing in a direction of the display panel (330) opposite to the first side (3111) (e.g., -z-axis direction).
[0128] According to one embodiment, a polarizing layer (320) and / or a display panel (330) may be laminated on the lower side (e.g., in the -z-axis direction) of the glass layer (311). In one embodiment, the glass layer (311) (e.g., the second planarization layer (3131)) and the polarizing layer (320) and / or the display panel (330) may be attached to each other via an adhesive (P).
[0129] According to one embodiment, a coating layer (314) may be laminated on the first surface (3111) of the glass layer (311). According to one embodiment, the coating layer (314) may include at least one of a hard coating layer and / or an anti-fingerprint layer. In one embodiment, the coating layer (314) may be composed of a material having a higher hardness value than the glass layer (311) and / or the first filling member (312) described below. For example, the coating layer (314) may have a surface hardness of H (hardness) or higher. In one embodiment, the coating layer (314) may have a compound for anti-fingerprint coating on the surface. In one embodiment, the coating layer (314) may have hydrophobicity having a water contact angle of 95 degrees or higher.
[0130] According to one embodiment, the glass layer (311) may include a plurality of first patterns (3113) formed lower than the first surface (3111) on the first surface (3111) and spaced apart from each other by a predetermined interval. According to one embodiment, the glass layer (311) may include a plurality of second patterns (3114) formed lower than the second surface (3112) on the second surface (3112) and spaced apart from each other by a predetermined interval. In one embodiment, the plurality of first patterns (3113) and the plurality of second patterns (3114) may be spaced apart from each other with a thin portion of the glass layer (311) (e.g., the third spacer (3117) of FIG. 15) therebetween.
[0131] According to one embodiment, the plurality of first patterns (3113) and the plurality of second patterns (3114) may be positioned in a third region (310c) of the window layer (310). For example, the plurality of first patterns (3113) and the plurality of second patterns (3114) may be positioned in an region of the glass layer (311) corresponding to a bendable portion (e.g., bendable portion (230c) of FIG. 2B) of a flexible display (e.g., flexible display (300) of FIG. 2B).
[0132] According to one embodiment, the plurality of first patterns (3113) and the plurality of second patterns (3114) may have various shapes. For example, the plurality of first patterns (3113) and the plurality of second patterns (3114) may be formed to extend along the folding axis (F) to have a wave shape, as illustrated in (a) of FIG. 8. In one example, the plurality of first patterns (3113) and the plurality of second patterns (3114) may be formed to extend along the folding axis (F) to have a straight line (e.g., a horizontal line) shape, as illustrated in (b) of FIG. 8. In one example, the plurality of first patterns (3113) and the plurality of second patterns (3114) may be formed to extend along the folding axis (F) to have a zigzag (or chevron) shape, as illustrated in (c) of FIG.
[0133] According to one embodiment, the window layer (310) may include a first filling member (312) filled with a plurality of first patterns (3113). According to one embodiment, the window layer (310) may include a second filling member (313) filled with a plurality of second patterns (3114).
[0134] According to one embodiment, the first filling member (312) and the second filling member (313) may include an elastic material. In one embodiment, the first filling member (312) and the second filling member (313) may include a substantially transparent material that is initially filled into the patterns (3113, 3114) in a liquid or semi-solid form and then hardened over time or through light irradiation or chemical treatment. The first filling member (312) and the second filling member (313) may include, for example, a resin such as silicone, urethane, or acrylic. The first filling member (312) and the second filling member (313) may correspond to an optically clear resin (OCR).
[0135] According to one embodiment, the first filling member (312) may have a modulus, hardness, or molecular weight that is substantially the same as the modulus, hardness, or molecular weight of the glass layer (311) to reduce the difference in touch sensation between the glass layer (311) and the filling member (312). For example, the first filling member (312) may have a modulus of 20 MPA to 400 MPA. When a user touches (or swipes) the display, deformation / micro-movement of the filling member (312) is reduced, so that the difference in touch sensation between the glass layer (311) and the first filling member (312) may be reduced.
[0136] In one embodiment, the second filler member (313) may have a different modulus, hardness, or molecular weight than the first filler member (312). In one embodiment, the second filler member (313) may have a lower modulus, hardness, or molecular weight than the modulus, hardness, or molecular weight of the first filler member (312). For example, if the first filler member (312) has a modulus of 20 to 400 MPA, the second filler member (313) may be designed to have a modulus of 0.005 to 10 MPA.
[0137] For example, when the first filling member (312) and the second filling member (313) have the same modulus of 400 MPA, a folding resistance (or repulsive force) of 1.1532 e mm][N·mm] can be applied to the bendable portion (230c) of the flexible display (300). For example, when the first filling member (312) has a modulus of 400 MPA and the second filling member (313) has a modulus of 0.03 MPA, a folding resistance (or repulsive force) of 1.1532 e [N·mm] can be applied to the bendable portion (230c) of the flexible display (300). Compared to the case where the first filling member (312) and the second filling member (313) have the same modulus of 400 MPA, the folding resistance can be improved (reduced) by 24%.
[0138] As a result, by designing the modulus, hardness, or molecular weight of the second filling member (313) to be lower than that of the first filling member (312), the folding resistance (or repulsive force) that increases as the modulus, hardness, or molecular weight of the first filling member (312) increases can be offset.
[0139] According to one embodiment, the plurality of first patterns (3113) may be formed to have a predetermined depth (d1) from the first surface (3111). According to one embodiment, the plurality of second patterns (3114) may be formed to have a predetermined depth (d2) from the second surface (3112).
[0140] According to one embodiment, the depth (d1) of the plurality of first patterns (3113) and the depth (d2) of the plurality of second patterns (3114) may be substantially the same.
[0141] In one embodiment, the depth (d1) of the plurality of first patterns (3113) and the depth (d2) of the plurality of second patterns (3114) may be different. In one embodiment, the depth (d1) of the plurality of first patterns (3113) may be shallower than the depth (d2) of the plurality of second patterns (3114) (see FIG. 7).
[0142] For example, when the first filling member (312) has a modulus of 400 MPA, the second filling member (313) has a modulus of 0.03 MPA, and the depths of the plurality of patterns (3113, 3114) are the same (d1=d2), a folding resistance force (or repulsive force) of 1.1532e [N· mm] can be applied to the bendable portion (230c) of the flexible display (300).
[0143] For example, if the first filling member (312) has a modulus of 400 MPA, the second filling member (313) has a modulus of 0.03 MPA, and the depths of the plurality of patterns (3113, 3114) are different (d1≠d2), for example, if the ratio of the depth (d1) of the plurality of first patterns (3113) to the depth (d2) of the plurality of second patterns (3114) is 1:2.2, 6.4054e is applied to the bendable portion (230c) of the flexible display (300). -1 A folding resistance (or, rebound force) of [N·mm] can be applied. When the first filling member (312) has a modulus of 400 MPA, the second filling member (313) has a modulus of 0.03 MPA, and the depths of the plurality of patterns (3113, 3114) are the same, the folding resistance can be improved (reduced) by 27% compared to the case where the first filling member (312) and the second filling member (313) have the same modulus of 400 MPA, and the depths of the plurality of patterns (3113, 3114) are the same, the folding resistance can be improved (reduced) by 44%.
[0144] According to one embodiment, a first planarization layer (e.g., the first planarization layer (3121) of FIG. 14) may be laminated on the first surface (3111) of the glass layer (311). As illustrated in FIG. 7, the first planarization layer may be omitted. Hereinafter, an embodiment in which the first planarization layer (3121) is laminated on the window layer (310) will be described with reference to FIG. 14.
[0145] According to one embodiment, a second planarization layer (3131) may be laminated on the second surface (3112) of the glass layer (311). In one embodiment, the second planarization layer (3131) may induce the second surface (3112), which is roughened by the second filling member (313) filled in the plurality of second patterns (3114), to have a substantially flat surface. In one embodiment, the second planarization layer (3131) may be composed of substantially the same material as the second filling member (313). The second planarization layer (3131) may be formed together when the second filling member (313) is filled in the plurality of second patterns (3114).
[0146] FIG. 9 is a graph showing the results of a strength simulation according to the thickness of a glass layer according to one embodiment of the present disclosure.
[0147] The X-axis of Fig. 9 represents the thickness (e.g., H of Fig. 7) of the glass layer (e.g., the glass layer (311) of Fig. 7), the Y1-axis of Fig. 9 (the Y-axis corresponding to the left side of the graph) represents the pen drop height (cm), and the Y2-axis of Fig. 9 (the Y-axis corresponding to the right side of the graph) represents the pen pressure (kgf). At this time, the specifications of the pen used in the simulation can satisfy 5.8g and 0.3pi.
[0148] Referring to FIG. 9, the thickness (H) of the glass layer (e.g., the glass layer (311) of FIG. 7) according to one embodiment can be designed to be 100 μm or more. At this time, the glass layer (311) can satisfy a pen drop height of 100 cm and an impact resistance of 2.7 kgf or more.
[0149] FIG. 10 is a graph showing the results of a pen pressure simulation according to the thickness of a first filling member according to one embodiment of the present disclosure.
[0150] The X-axis of FIG. 10 represents the thickness (um) of the first filling member (e.g., the first filling member (312) of FIG. 7), and the Y-axis of FIG. 10 represents the maximum stress (or fracture strength) (MPa) of the glass layer (e.g., the glass layer (311) of FIG. 7).
[0151] Referring to FIG. 10, the thickness of the first filling member (312) according to one embodiment of the present disclosure may be designed to be 20 μm or more. Here, the thickness of the first filling member (312) may mean a value substantially the same as the plurality of first patterns (e.g., the depth (d1) of the plurality of first patterns (3113) of FIG. 7). At this time, the maximum stress (or breaking strength) of the glass layer (311) satisfies 3000 MPA and can maintain a pen pressure strength (5.8 g, 0.3 pi) of 0.3 kgf or more.
[0152] FIG. 11 is a process diagram for manufacturing a window layer according to one embodiment of the present disclosure. FIG. 12 is a diagram illustrating a process for forming a plurality of patterns on a glass layer according to one embodiment of the present disclosure. FIG. 13 is a diagram illustrating a process for filling a filling material into a plurality of patterns according to one embodiment of the present disclosure.
[0153] Referring to FIG. 11, a glass base material (e.g., a glass base material (311a) of FIG. 12) may be prepared (1110) for manufacturing a window layer (e.g., a window layer (310) of FIG. 5). According to one embodiment, the glass base material (311a) may be prepared to a thickness that protects the display and has pressure resistance characteristics according to contact (or pressure) of an external electronic device (e.g., an electronic pen). For example, the glass base material (311a) may be designed to have a thickness of 100 μm or more.
[0154] According to one embodiment, the manufacturing process of the window layer may include a process of forming a plurality of patterns (e.g., a plurality of first patterns (3113) and a plurality of second patterns (3114) of FIG. 7) on the glass layer (311) (1120). According to one embodiment, the process of forming a plurality of patterns (3113, 3114) on the glass layer (311) (1120) may include a process of forming a pattern line (1122) on a pattern portion (or pattern area) (L1, L2) of a glass base material (311a) using a laser. According to one embodiment, the process of forming a plurality of patterns (3113, 3114) on the glass layer (311) (1120) may include a process of etching the pattern line (1124).
[0155] Hereinafter, with reference to (a) to (e) of FIG. 12, a manufacturing process (1120) for forming a plurality of patterns (3113, 3114) on a glass layer (311) will be described.
[0156] According to one embodiment, a masking member (M) may be attached to the second surface (3112) of the glass substrate (311a) to prevent etching (see (a) of FIG. 12).
[0157] According to one embodiment, a plurality of pattern lines can be formed by irradiating a laser or a Bessel beam at a predetermined interval to a pattern portion (L1) located on a first surface (3111) of a glass base material (311a) (see (b) of FIG. 12). For example, a plurality of pattern lines can be vertically phase-changed on the pattern portion (L1) of the glass base material (311a) by the laser or Bessel beam. Here, the pattern portion (L1) may mean an area corresponding to a third area of the window layer (310) (e.g., the third area (310c) of FIG. 6).
[0158] According to one embodiment, a glass base material (311b) having pattern lines formed on a first surface (3111) may be dipped into an etching solution to form a plurality of first patterns (3113) (see (c) of FIG. 12). Here, the etching solution may include various acid / base solutions. For example, the etching solution may include ammonium fluoride (NH4F), sulfuric acid (H2SO4), nitric acid (HNO3), fluorosilicic acid (H2SiF6), sodium hydroxide (NaOH), and / or hydrofluoric acid (HF). The etching solution may penetrate into the plurality of pattern lines phase-changed by a laser or a Bessel beam, and a plurality of first patterns (3113) having a predetermined depth may be formed.
[0159] According to one embodiment, after removing the masking member (M) attached to the second surface (3112) of the glass base material (311c), a laser or a Bessel beam is irradiated at predetermined intervals to the pattern portion (L2) located on the second surface (3112) of the glass base material (311c) to form a plurality of pattern lines (see (d) of FIG. 12).
[0160] According to one embodiment, a plurality of second patterns (3114) can be formed by dipping a glass substrate (311d) having pattern lines formed on a second surface (3112) into an etching solution ((e) of FIG. 12).
[0161] According to one embodiment, the manufacturing process of the window layer may include a process of filling filling members (312, 313) into a plurality of patterns (3113, 3114) provided on the glass layer (311) (1130).
[0162] Hereinafter, with reference to (a) to (f) of FIG. 13, a manufacturing process for filling filling members (312, 313) into a glass layer (311) is described.
[0163] According to one embodiment, after attaching a masking member (M) to the second surface (3112) of the glass layer (311) (see (a) of FIG. 13), a first filling member (312) can be applied across the first surface (3111) (see (b) of FIG. 13). At this time, the first filling member (312) can be filled into a plurality of first patterns (3113) provided on the first surface (3111).
[0164] According to one embodiment, in order to improve the texture of the glass layer (311), the extra first filling member (3121) together with the bubbles can be removed (see (c) of FIG. 13).
[0165] According to one embodiment, after attaching a masking member (M) to the first surface (3111) of the glass layer (311), the first filling member (312) can be cured for a predetermined period of time (see (d) of FIG. 13).
[0166] According to one embodiment, after detaching the masking member (M) attached to the second surface (3112) of the glass layer (311), the glass layer (311) may be flipped upside down and a second filling member (313) may be applied across the second surface (3112) (see (e) of FIG. 13).
[0167] According to one embodiment, after detaching the masking member (M) attached to the first surface (3111) along with removing bubbles, the second filling member (313) can be cured for a predetermined period of time. Thereafter, a protective vinyl (PF) can be attached to both sides (3111, 3112) of the glass layer (311) (see (f) of FIG. 13).
[0168] FIG. 14 is a cross-sectional view of a flexible display according to one embodiment of the present disclosure.
[0169] Referring to FIG. 14, a first planarization layer (3121) may be laminated on a first surface (3111) of a glass layer (311) according to one embodiment.
[0170] According to one embodiment, the first planarization layer (3121) can induce the first surface (3111) roughened by the first filling member (312) filled in the plurality of first patterns (3113) to have a substantially flat surface. In one embodiment, the first planarization layer (3121) can be composed of substantially the same material as the first filling member (312). The first planarization layer (3121) can be formed together when the first filling member (312) is filled in the plurality of first patterns (3113).
[0171] As the entire first surface (3111) of the glass layer (311) is exposed with the same material, the difference in touch sensation between regions (e.g., the first region (310a) to the third region (310c) of FIG. 6) of the window layer (e.g., the window layer (310) of FIG. 6) can be alleviated.
[0172] In addition, in the manufacturing process of the window layer, unlike as shown in (c) of FIG. 13, the process cost can be reduced as the process of removing the extra first filling member (3121) is deleted.
[0173] According to one embodiment, the thickness of the first flattening layer (3121) may range from 10 to 30 μm. When the thickness of the first flattening layer (3121) is appropriately set, the loss of touch sensitivity due to the material texture of the glass layer (311) can be alleviated.
[0174] FIG. 15 is a cross-sectional view of a glass layer according to one embodiment of the present disclosure.
[0175] Referring to FIG. 15, in one embodiment, a first spacer (3115) may be formed between a plurality of first patterns (3113). In one embodiment, the first spacer (3115) may be formed together with the formation of the plurality of first patterns (3113). In one embodiment, the thickness (Ta) of the first spacer (3115) may indicate a spacing between the plurality of first patterns (3113).
[0176] According to one embodiment, a second spacer (3116) may be formed between a plurality of second patterns (3114). In one embodiment, the second spacer (3116) may be formed together when the plurality of second patterns (3114) are formed. In one embodiment, the thickness (Tb) of the second spacer (3116) may indicate a gap between the plurality of second patterns (3114). In one embodiment, the thicknesses (Ta, Tb) of the first spacer (3115) and the second spacer (3116) may be substantially the same, but the present disclosure is not limited thereto.
[0177] According to one embodiment, a third spacer (3117) may be formed between a plurality of first patterns (3113) and a plurality of second patterns (3114). In one embodiment, the plurality of first patterns (3113) and the plurality of second patterns (3114) may be spaced apart from each other by a predetermined distance (Tc) with the third spacer (3117) therebetween. According to one embodiment, the third spacer (3117) between the plurality of first patterns (3113) and the plurality of second patterns (3114) may be formed as a plane substantially parallel to the glass layer (311). For example, the first spacer (3115) may be formed substantially perpendicular to the third spacer (3117). For example, the second spacer (3116) may be formed substantially perpendicular to the third spacer (3117). The first spacer (3115) and the second spacer (3116) can extend in opposite directions with respect to the third spacer (3117).
[0178] According to one embodiment, the glass layer (311) may have its surface chemically strengthened by alkaline ion exchange to protect the display. Here, the alkaline ions may include K+ ions. By exchanging Na+ ions and K+ ions inside the glass layer (311), compressive stress is formed on the surface of the glass layer (311), so that the impact strength of the glass layer (311) may be improved. At this time, the chemical strengthening treatment of the glass layer (311) may be performed based on the thinnest part (thin part) among the components of the glass layer (311), for example, the spacers (3115, 3116, 3117) described above.
[0179] Thickness (um) Compressive stress (MPa) 15 17 5 20 35 0 25 5 25 30 70 0 35 8 7 5 40 10 5 0 45 12 25 5 0 14 0 0
[0180] The above [Table 1] is a table showing the compressive stress applied to the thick portion of the glass layer (311) according to the thickness of the spacers (3115, 3116, 3117). According to one embodiment, the first spacer (3115), the second spacer (3116), and the third spacer (3117) may be formed to have a predetermined thickness for chemical strengthening treatment. In one embodiment, the thickness of the first spacer (3115), the second spacer (3116), and the third spacer (3117) may be designed to be 30 μm or more. In this case, as described in the above [Table 1], a compressive stress of 700 MPa, which is a compressive stress of 600 MPa or more, may be applied to the thick portion of the glass layer (311). Accordingly, during chemical strengthening treatment, the self-breaking phenomenon in which the glass layer (311) breaks by itself due to tensile stress occurring inside the glass layer (311) can be prevented.
[0181] FIG. 16 is a schematic diagram of an electronic device in an unfolded state according to one embodiment of the present disclosure. FIG. 17 is a schematic diagram of an electronic device in a folded state according to one embodiment of the present disclosure.
[0182] Referring to FIGS. 16 and 17, an electronic device (400) according to one embodiment may include a first housing (410), a second housing (420), and a third housing (430) that are rotatably arranged relative to each other.
[0183] According to one embodiment, the electronic device (400) may include a flexible display (440) arranged to be supported by a first housing (410), a second housing (420), and a third housing (430).
