AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

The existing AI/ML positioning techniques in wireless communications face a significant challenge in reducing the signaling overhead associated with reporting time domain channel impulse responses (CIRs) and power delay profiles (PDPs).

Method used

A new report format is proposed that reduces the measurement size by selecting only the most significant paths, reporting relative path power to the largest path power, and reporting power differences between adjacent paths, rather than absolute powers.

Benefits of technology

This approach significantly reduces the measurement signaling size for CIR/PDP reports, thereby alleviating the signaling overhead and enhancing the efficiency of AI/ML positioning in wireless communications.

Abstract

When the AI / ML model is deployed at LMF, there will be a signaling overhead for reporting CIR / PDP in the process of model inference and model monitoring. Similarly, in the data collection phase, there is also a large signaling overhead caused by UE / gNB / PRU reporting CIR / PDP. This disclosure proposes two path selection methods and to report the selected paths of CIR / PDP / DP to reduce overhead. In addition, instead of the report of absolute path power, this disclosure proposes to report the common power scaling and relative path power. Finally, the report of power difference between two adjacent paths sorted by power is proposed to replace the report of absolute / relative path power to reduce the signaling overhead for CIR / PDP reporting.

Description

A REPORT FORMAT OF AI / ML POSITIONING FOR MEASUREMENT SIGNALLING OVERHEAD REDUCTIONFIELD

[0001] This present disclosure relates generally to wireless communications, and more specifically, to techniques of positioning a user equipment (UE) with Artificial Intelligence (AI)  / Machine Learning (ML) .BACKGROUND

[0002] The 3GPP (Third Generation Partnership Program) approved a study item on AI / ML based positioning. The AI / ML based positioning includes direct AI / ML positioning and AI / ML assisted positioning. For direct AI / ML positioning with LMF-side model, the measurement size of model input has impact to signaling overhead for model inference, monitoring and data collection. Especially for data collection, the signaling overhead is affected by the measurement size whether it is a direct AI / ML model or AI / ML assisted model, whether it is a UE / gNB side or a LMF side model. Therefore, to reduce the signaling overhead, a new report format to reduce the measurement size is beneficial.SUMMARY

[0003] The following presents a simplified summary of one or more aspects in order to provide a basic understanding of such aspects. This summary is not an extensive overview of all contemplated aspects, and is intended to neither identify key or critical elements of all aspects nor delineate the scope of any or all aspects. Its sole purpose is to present some concepts of one or more aspects in a simplified form as a prelude to the more detailed description that is presented later.

[0004] Time domain channel impulse responses (CIRs) and power delay profiles (PDPs) are proposed as two model input types for AI / ML positioning in 3GPP. CIR contains the information of timing of path delay, power of path, and phase of path. PDP contains the information of power and timing delay of path. The measurement signaling overhead caused by the whole CIR / PDP reporting can be reduced by reducing the measurement size of each path (or time domain sample) and the number of reported paths. This disclosure provides a report format of UE / gNB / Positioning Reference Unit (PRU) reporting CIR / PDP to Location Management Function (LMF) , including report the selected paths instead of all paths, report the common power scaling and the relative path power to the largest path power, as well as reporting power difference between two adjacent  paths sorted by power rather than reporting absolute power of each path, the measurement signaling size of CIR / PDP can be significantly reduced.

[0005] To the accomplishment of the foregoing and related ends, the one or more aspects comprise the features hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims. The following description and the annexed figures set forth in detail certain illustrative features of the one or more aspects. These features are indicative, however, of but a few of the various ways in which the principles of various aspects may be employed, and this description is intended to include all such aspects and their equivalents.BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

[0006] Figure 1 illustrates high-level process of a CIR / PDP / DP reporting.

[0007] Figure 2 is an example of calculating the relative path power to the maximum path power.DETAILED DESCRIPTION

[0008] The detailed description set forth below in connection with the appended drawings is intended as a description of various configurations and is not intended to represent the only configurations in which the concepts described herein may be practiced. The detailed description includes specific details for the purpose of providing a thorough understanding of various concepts. However, it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that these concepts may be practiced without these specific details. In some instances, well known structures and components are shown in block diagram form in order to avoid obscuring such concepts.

[0009] Several aspects of telecommunication systems will now be presented with reference to various apparatus and methods. These apparatus and methods will be described in the following detailed description and illustrated in the accompanying drawings by various blocks, components, circuits, processes, algorithms, etc. (collectively referred to as “elements” ) . These elements may be implemented using electronic hardware, computer software, or any combination thereof. Whether such elements are implemented as hardware or software depends upon the particular application and design constraints imposed on the overall system.

[0010] For AI / ML based positioning, when AI / ML model is deployed in UE / PRU side, gNB will send positioning reference signal (PRS) to UE / PRU. UE / PRU will estimate the channel delay profiles between gNB and UE / PRU based on received PRS. If AI / ML model is deployed in network side (gNB or LMF) , UE / PRU will send sounding reference signal (SRS) to gNB. And gNB will estimate the channel delay profiles between gNB and UE / PRU based on received SRS. These measured channel delay profiles are CIRs / PDPs / DPs, which are also two input types for  AI / ML positioning model. The estimated CIR / PDP / DP is reported to LMF for data collection, model inference and model monitoring, etc. The process of CIR / PDP / DP reporting from UE / PRU / gNB to LMF is shown in Figure 1.

[0011] This disclosure proposes that the CIR / PDP / DP report should be associated to legacy measurement report. The legacy measurement of RTT and RSTD are taken as examples. If UE performs UE Rx-Tx time difference measurement, it will be a separate measurement result for each TRP, and the CIR / PDP / DP correspondingly to the TRP is reported. If the DL-RSTD measurement is performed, the two channel delay profiles between the UE and corresponding two TRPs are estimated for the timing difference calculation, and the CIR / PDP / DP of the two TRPs needs to be reported.

[0012] For evaluation of AI / ML based positioning with multipath measurement such as DP, PDP and CIR for model input, companies are suggested to report the measurement signaling size in RAN1#114. CIR has the largest measurement size, where CIR is composed of a list of measurements where each measurement contains the information of: (a) timing of path delay, (b) power of path and (c) phase of path. PDP has smaller measurement size than CIR, where PDP is composed of a list of measurements where each measurement contains the information of (a) timing of path delay and (b) power of path. DP has the smallest measurement size, where DP is composed of a list of measurements where each measurement contains the information of (a) timing of path delay. For calculation of measurement size, the following variables are used for reference,

[0013] ○ N’TRP: number of active TRPs that provide measurements for model input

[0014] ○ Nt: number of consecutive time domain samples as model input

[0015] ○ N't: number of selected time domain samples as model input

[0016] ○ Nport: number of transmit / receive antenna port pairs for model input

[0017] ○ Bphase: the number of bits to represent a phase for CIR.

[0018] ○ Bpwr: the number of bits to represent a real value for path power of PDP / CIR.

[0019] ○ Bt: number of bits to represent the timing information of a tap

[0020] If sub-sampling is not applied, Nt number of consecutive samples will be reported without timing information. The measurement signaling size for each CIR can be calculated by (N’TRP*Nport*Nt* (Bpwr+Bphase) ) bits. The timing of the consecutive samples is fixed, so Bt is not counted.

[0021] The measurement size can be reduced by sub-sampling, such as selecting paths to report, there are the following two options, 1) The paths with first N't largest power (the number is fixed to facilitate training) are selected, and N't is configured by NW. 2) The paths with power lower than M dB relative to the peak power (the number could be dynamic but LMF could perform  further processing) are selected, and M is configured by NW. Assuming that the number of selected path samples of a CIR is N’ t. The measurement signaling size for this CIR can be calculated by (N’TRP*Nport*N't* (Bpwr+Bphase+Bt) ) bits. If Bbitmap = Ntbitmap is applied to indicate timing information, the measurement signaling size is (N’TRP*Nt+N’TRP*Nport*N't* (Bpwr+Bphase) ) .

[0022] This disclosure replaces the report of absolute path power with the report of relative path power to the largest path power and a common power scaling. The relative power is the ratio of the absolute power of each path to the peak power. The peak power is the maximum absolute power. Figure 2 shows an example of relative power difference to the maximum path power, where the reported relative power corresponding to the absolute power of 6 selected paths is {0.375, 0.25, 0.625, 1, 0.5, 0.25} , calculated by {24, 16, 40, 64, 32, 16}  / 64.

[0023] Each CIR / PDP reported can be normalized or non-normalized. The relative path power of the normalized and non-normalized CIR / PDP is the same, but the associated common power scaling is different.

[0024] For non-normalized CIR / PDP, the relative path power will be associated with a common power scaling which can be used to calculate the absolute power. For example, the common power scaling in Figure 2 is 64, multiplied by the relative path power, the absolute power can be obtained.

[0025] For normalized CIR / PDP, the peak power is less than 1. The sum of the normalized power of all paths is 1, that is, the sum of the relative power of all paths multiplied by the common factor is 1.If only some paths are selected for reporting, the reported total power is less than 1.

[0026] The timing delay of CIR / PDP / DP reporting contains: 1) a time unit (sampling period) for CIR / PDP / DP measurement, 2) the time indexes of selected paths.

[0027] The time index reporting includes the index of path with peak power and the indexes of the additional paths. The indexes of the additional paths are the relative indexes of additional paths to the index of the path with peak power.

[0028] For a given set of parameters {N’TRP, Nport, N't} , the measurement size for model input increases (approximately) linearly with Bpwr (the number of bits to represent a path power of PDP / CIR) . The above describes the method of reporting the relative power, and the following describes the power difference reporting to reduce the signaling overhead.

[0029] For the relative / absolute power reporting of CIR / PDP, this disclosure proposes to report in the format of power difference. The power difference is the difference between two adjacent paths sorted by relative / absolute power. All paths are sorted based on path power from strongest to weakest or vice versa, and the index of each path should be recorded to ensure that the power corresponding to each path remains the same after sorting. In addition, the timing and phase of each path also need to be associated to these indexes.

[0030] The variable Bpwr_diff is denoted as the number of bits to represent a power difference between two sorted adjacent paths, and Bpwr_ref is the number of bits to represent the relative / absolute power of the reference path. The report size of power for each CIR / PDP will be reduced from N’TRP*Nport*N't*Bpwr to N’TRP*Nport * (N't*Bpwr_diff + Bpwr_ref) .

[0031] Taking the relative power of PDP in Figure 2 as an example to illustrate the calculation of the power difference. The 6 paths with the relative power of {3 / 8, 2 / 8, 5 / 8, 1, 4 / 8, 2 / 8} need to be reported. Assumes that the paths are ordered from weakest to strongest, the sorted path power will be {2 / 8, 2 / 8, 3 / 8, 4 / 8, 5 / 8, 1} . Taking the minimum value 2 / 8 as the starting reference, the power difference between two adjacent paths can be obtained as {2 / 8 (reference) , 0, 1 / 8, 1 / 8, 1 / 8, 3 / 8} . Then the maximum power difference of 3 / 8 instead of the maximum relative power 1 needs to be reported, which can effectively reduce the number of bits required for CIR / PDP reporting. Also, the maximum relative power 1 can be used as reference and the power difference between two adjacent paths can be obtained as {1 (reference) , 3 / 8, 1 / 8, 1 / 8, 1 / 8, 0} . It can be seen that the difference between the maximum and minimum values used as references is only that the reference values are different, while the power differences of additional paths are the same. Therefore, it is recommended to use the minimum value as a reference. If we use the same number of bits to report both the reference path power and the additional path power, it will be wasteful if the reference path power is large. So we propose to use different number of bits to report the reference path power and additional path power.

[0032] The number of bits required for power difference report depends on the maximum power difference between the two adjacent paths sorted by power. With the increase of N't, the signaling overhead of the power difference reporting for each CIR / PDP decreases to Bpwr_diff / Bpwr of absolute / relative power report overhead.
