[0001] METHODS, COMBINATIONS, AND COMPOSITIONS FOR CONTROLLING PEST

[0002] Field of invention

[0003] The present invention relates to a method of controlling an insect pest, particularly pests of Tula genus. In particular, the present invention relates to a method of controlling Tula absoluta with a combination / composition of azadirachtin and an oil. The present invention also relates to a method of controlling Tuta absoluta with a combination / composition of azadirachtin, an oil, and optionally a biological pesticide. The present invention further relates to the combinations and compositions of azadirachtin, an oil and optional biological pesticide for controlling pests of Tuta genus, and kits comprising the same.

[0004] Background

[0005] Tomato (Solarium lycopersicum L.) is one of the most grown and extensively consumed crops worldwide. Globally, about 160 million tonnes of tomatoes are produced each year. Tuta absoluta is a major threat to tomato production, causing losses ranging from 80% to 100% when not properly managed. Over the years, farmers have been using different methods in efforts to control the pest unsuccessfully. These include the use of pheromone traps and natural enemies to monitor the population, cultivation of resistant tomato varieties, and incessant spraying of chemical pesticides. The excessive use of these chemicals is not only uneconomical but also has harmful effects on non-targeted organisms and can also lead to the development of pest resistance and irreparable damage to the environment.

[0006] Alternative methods of control, particularly biocontrol, has been practiced with different active ingredients biocontrol agents such as predators, parasitoids, botanicals and microbials. However, the effectiveness and accessibility of these biopesticides vary with pest species and geographical areas whereas little success has been reported in certain regions. Thus, there is an urgent need for screening for effective alternative options to control Tuta absoluta and damage inflicted by it on tomato.

[0007] It is thus an object of the present invention to provide novel combinations and compositions for control of Tuta absoluta and other pests of Tuta genus. It is an object of the present invention to provide a method of controlling Tuta absoluta and other pests of Tuta genus with novel combinations and compositions of actives and effectively control damage and yield losses of tomato. It is another object of the present invention to provide synergistic combinations effective in controlling Tuta absoluta and other pests of Tuta genus. It is also an object of the present invention to provide solution for effective control of Tuta absoluta and other pests of Tuta genus comprising natural extracts or phytochemicals, ingredients harmless to plants, and / or biological agents; which are environment friendly and non-toxic to plants.

[0105] Synergistic effect refers to efficacy greater than additive effect of individual efficacies of the constituent active ingredients, here azadirachtin and oil. This effectiveness of all treatments can be evaluated according to Colby’s equation. In the Colby’s equation given below, E is the expected efficacy of combination of azadirachtin and oil,

[0106] X is the observed efficacy of azadirachtin and

[0107] Y is the observed efficacy of the oil.

[0108] Observed efficacy values i.e. X and Y are % mortality of Tula absoluta for azadirachtin and oil respectively. If observed efficacy is equal to or less than expected efficacy, then combination is determined to be non- synergistic.

Water volume was maintained at 800 L / ha. Solo treatments of Azadirachtin 26 EC, Metarhizhium brunneum 105 OD, and Paraffinic oil 546 EW were conducted. The experiment was conducted in 4 replicates in the year 2024 and the efficacy of controlling pest damage was reported as average of the replicates 6 days after first application; 3, 7, 14 days after second application.

[0131] Table 6: Efficacy of azadirachtin + paraffinic oil + Metarhizium brunneum on Tula absoluta in tomato 3 days after second foliar application From the above tables 1 and 2, it can be noted that the binary combination of azadirachtin and oil is synergistic in controlling the Tuta absoluta. From the tables 3 - 6, it can be noted that the ternary combination of azadirachtin, oil and a biological pesticide is synergistic in controlling the Tuta absoluta. 1
