AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Existing methods struggle to effectively evaluate the impact of antenna correlation on wireless communication systems using the Envelope Correlation Coefficient (ECC), as ECC does not always exhibit a direct one-to-one relation with channel capacity loss, especially in directional channels, and antenna distance is difficult to evaluate in normal OTA tests.

Method used

Utilizing Antenna ECC as an assessment criterion to evaluate antenna correlation's impact on communication systems, by setting a proper limit on ECC to avoid large performance degradation, and recognizing and excluding extremely small antenna distances to ensure relatively good correlation coefficients.

Benefits of technology

This approach ensures that channel capacity loss is limited, poor correlation coefficients are avoided, and 2-TX TRP value deviations are minimized, thereby ensuring the performance of wireless communication systems.

Abstract

In this invention, we devised a method that Antenna ECC can be used as the assessment criterion on antenna correlation of UE, and by properly setting a limit on Antenna ECC, extremely small antenna distances can be recognized and excluded, thus relatively poor channel correlation coefficient can be avoided, and the average communication performance is ensured to some extent; at the same time, relatively larger 2-TX TRP value deviation can also be avoided.

Description

A METHOD OF EVALUATING ANTENNA CORRELATION IMPACT ON WIRELESS COMMUNICATION SYSTEM BASED ON ECCTECHNICAL FIELD

[0001] The disclosed embodiments relate generally to antenna correlation of User Equipment (UE) , and, more particularly, to a new method that Antenna ECC can be used as an assessment criterion to evaluate antenna correlation impact on the communication system performance, especially by setting a proper limit on ECC, relatively large performance degradation can be avoided effectively.BACKGROUND

[0002] In multiple-antenna wireless communication systems, the antenna correlation performance of User Equipment (UE) affects the channel capacity and communication throughput performance; on the other hand, it can be proved that the antenna correlation also affects 2-TX over-the-air (OTA) Total Radiated Power (TRP) value deviation relative to average 2-TX TRP values of a two-antenna array.

[0003] Due to both the effects with respect to antenna correlation mentioned above, it is necessary for related communication standards to regulate the antenna correlation performance of UE to guarantee the performance of the wireless communication systems.

[0004] The Envelope Correlation Coefficient (ECC) has been widely adopted by the industry as an important figure of merit to evaluate the correlation properties between two antennas, it could be one option for assessment criterion to evaluate how much the antenna correlation affects the communication performance. But unfortunately, we can see that Antenna ECC does not necessarily exhibit direct one-to-one relation with the channel capacity loss all the time, especially when directional channel model involved; on the other hand, antenna correlation is closely related with the distance between antennas, but antenna distance can hardly be evaluated under the normal OTA test method and antenna distance imposes effect on correlation to different extent when antenna patterns are different, hence antenna distance is not suitable to be used as criterion on antenna correlation directly.

[0005] It will be better if methods can be devised, with which ECC values can be used as an assessment criterion to evaluate antenna correlation effect on the communication system  performance, especially by setting a proper limit on ECC, large performance degradation can be avoided effectively.SUMMARY

[0006] The main purpose of the present disclosure is to provide a method that can overcome the disadvantages of conventional methods.

[0007] We can see that antenna correlation of User Equipment (UE) does have at least two effects on wireless communication system performance:

[0008] Firstly, antenna correlation of UE has its effect on the channel capacity of wireless communication systems.

[0009] Secondly, we can prove that antenna correlation affects the total over-the-air (OTA) Total Radiated Power (TRP) when two antennas transmitting the same layer of data simultaneously.

[0010] Due to both the effects with respect to antenna correlation mentioned above, it is necessary for communication standards to regulate the antenna correlation performance of UE to guarantee the performance of the wireless communication systems.

[0011] The Envelope Correlation Coefficient (ECC) has been widely adopted by the industry as an important figure of merit to evaluate the correlation properties between two antennas, it could be one option for assessment criterion to evaluate how much the antenna correlation affects the communication performance. But unfortunately, we can see that Antenna ECC does not necessarily exhibit direct one-to-one relation with the channel capacity loss all the time, especially when directional channel model involved.

[0012] On the other hand, antenna correlation is closely related with the distance between antennas, but antenna distance can hardly be evaluated under the normal OTA test method and antenna distance imposes effect on correlation to different extent when antenna patterns are different, hence antenna distance is not suitable to be used as criterion on antenna correlation directly.

[0013] In this invention, we devised the method that Antenna ECC is used as the assessment criterion on antenna correlation of UE, and by properly setting a limit on Antenna ECC, extremely small antenna distance can be recognized and excluded, thus relatively poor correlation coefficient of channel can be avoided, and the communication performance is ensured; at the same time, relatively larger 2-TX TRP value deviation can also be avoided.

[0014] This summary does not purport to define the invention. The invention is defined by the claims.BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

[0020] From the perspective of channel capacity, we can consider the multiple-antenna wireless communication system as described in FIG. 1 with NT transmit antennas and NR receive antennas. The wireless channel can be represented by NR X NT matrix H. When the transmit power is equally distributed among all the transmit antennas, the channel capacity can be expressed as:

[0021] Where Ex is the total power of the transmitted signals, N0 the power spectral density of the additive noise at receive end,  is an NR X NR identity matrix, and HH is the conjugate transpose of the matrix H.

[0022] For simplicity's sake, we focus on high Signal Noise Ratio (SNR) scenarios because the impact imposed by antenna correlation on channel capacity is more obvious to be observed. When SNR is high,  in the det operator of equation (1) can be ignored, and we can get

[0023] Kronecker Equation is as follows:

[0024] Where Rr is the correlation coefficient matrix at receive end, Rt is the correlation coefficient matrix at transmit end, and Hw is the independent and identically distributed (i. i. d. ) Rayleigh fading channel gain matrix.

[0025] Based on equation (2) and (3) , the channel capacity when SNR is high can be expressed as:

[0026] We can see from equation (4) that the correlation coefficient matrix Rt and Rr affect the channel capacity independently, and both reduce the channel capacity.

[0027] We can define RUE as the correlation coefficient matrix at UE side, which is Rr in equation (4) when UE is receiving and Rt when UE is transmitting. The dimension of RUE is NUE X NUE where NUE is the number of UE antennas. Each element of RUE locating at row m and column n is the correlation coefficient between antenna m and antenna n of UE, which can be defined as follows:

[0028] Where and are complex vector signals value radiated from m-th and n-th antenna respectively, Ω is the solid angle, and P (Ω) is the Power Angular Spectrum (PAS) of a channel model.

[0029] The absolute value of correlation coefficient is also often called ECC, to distinguish it from Antenna ECC, we can define it as Total ECC, which includes the effect of both antenna correlation and channel spatial correlation: ECCtotal=|ρmn|     (6)

[0030] According to equation (4) , (5) and (6) , when two antennas of UE are considered, namely NUE =2, m=1 and n=2, the capacity loss due to correlation coefficient matrix at UE side is derived as:

[0031] where ECCtotal is the value of Total ECC.

[0032] From equation (7) , we can see that the capacity loss introduced by correlation at UE side is logarithmic proportional to the Total ECC when SNR is high, and two antennas are considered.

[0033] When the channel is isotropic, i.e., the PAS P (Ω) is equal for all values of Ω, the Total ECC equals Antenna ECC, namely, the Antenna is one special case of Total ECC, then we can get the following equation when SNR is high: CLoss, iso=|log2 (1-ECCant2) |     (8)

[0034] where ECCant is the value of Antenna ECC.

[0035] We can see from equation (8) that the capacity loss introduced by correlation at UE side has direct relation with the Antenna ECC when SNR is high, and the channel is isotropic. If Antenna ECC is known, we can predict the capacity loss in isotropic channel. According to equation (8) , if we set a limit to Antenna ECC, like 0.4, capacity loss lager than 0.252 bit / Hz can be avoided, corresponding to 1.6%of total channel capacity of 2-layer Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) transmission with 256-QAM modulation scheme.

[0036] But when the channel is directional, namely the PAS P (Ω) is unevenly distributed with Ω, Antenna ECC does not follow the same trend as Total ECC, thus Antenna ECC does not necessarily exhibit direct one-to-one relation with the channel capacity loss as in isotropic channel.

[0037] On the other hand, antenna correlation is closely related with the distance between antennas, but antenna distance can hardly be evaluated in the normal OTA test method, hence antenna distance is not suitable to be used as criterion on antenna correlation directly.

[0038] Antenna ECC has been widely adopted by the industry as an important figure of merit to evaluate the correlation properties between two antennas, it will be better if Antenna ECC can be used as the assessment criterion on the impact introduced by antenna correlation of UE to channel capacity. For this purpose, we did some simulation and found some trends of ECC with antenna distances.

[0039] As shown in FIG. 3 is the simulation data on Total ECC for two dipole antennas with a directional channel model and antenna distances ranging from 0.1 wavelength to 2 wavelengths with 0.1 wavelength step. Rotate the 2-antenna array by 30°at each step and draw a curve of Total ECC versus antenna distance. Due to the symmetry of the antenna pattern, the two curves with 180°difference in rotation angle are identical, so only half of the curves are drawn.

[0040] From the simulation, we can find the following observations:

[0041] Firstly, all the Total ECC curves as well as Antenna ECC curve fluctuate with antenna distances, and Antenna ECC does not exhibit direct one-to-one relation with Total ECC corresponding to any rotation angle of the antenna array. Since it is the Total ECC that determined channel capacity loss directly in directional channel according to equation (7) , the Antenna ECC does not have direct relation with channel capacity loss in this condition. The Antenna ECC does not have direct one-to-one relation with antenna distance neither.

[0042] Secondly, in the small antenna distance range, Antenna ECC curve is the steepest and reach the first valley with the smallest antenna distance compared to all the Total ECC curves with different rotation angles. Define the antenna distance when Antenna ECC reaches the first valley is A and OA is the distance range from zero to A. Generally, the wider the PAS distribution is, the faster the Total ECC curve roll off to the first valley along antenna distance axis, and isotropic channel has the widest PAS distribution, it is reasonable that the Antenna ECC rolls off the fastest.

[0043] Thirdly, all the Total ECC curves as well as Antenna ECC curve decrease monotonously along the distance increasing direction in the range of OA.

[0044] Fourthly, in distance range OA, all the Total ECC curves no matter what antenna array rotation angle is, are much higher than the Antenna ECC curve. It is the unevenly distributed PAS of the directional channel that increases the total channel correlation.

[0045] Fifthly, if we set a limit on Antenna ECC, for example 0.4, the limit line will intersect with Antenna ECC curve at a point with antenna distance B as shown in FIG. 3. We can find that the distance range OB is the most undesirable zone with respect to antenna correlation, because all the Total ECC curves, no matter what antenna array rotation angle is, as well as Antenna ECC, are extremely higher simultaneously which leads to higher average and maximum channel capacity loss among all the rotation angels as shown in FIG. 4. This does not happen in all the other range excluding the range OB. As shown in FIG. 4, if Antenna ECC is less than 0.4, the maximum capacity loss will not exceed 4.2 bit / Hz and the average capacity loss will not exceed 2.2 bit / Hz among all the rotation angles of the 2-antnna array.

[0046] From above five observations, we can find that by setting a limit to Antenna ECC, extremely small antenna distance can be recognized and excluded, thus relatively poor correlation coefficient with directional channel can be avoided, and the average communication performance is ensured to a certain extent.

[0047] The specific antenna distance corresponding to the Antenna ECC limit is hard to be specified, because it depends on the specific antenna design and hard to be measured, but the actual distance value is not that important because this method intends to figure out whether the antenna distance is large enough to guarantee the antenna correlation, the total channel correlation, and the average channel capacity for a specific antenna design.

[0048] The actual channel capacity as well as the capacity loss led by correlation is also hard to predict because it depends on some factors like the channel PAS and the antenna patterns. This method just delivers a simple way to regulate the UE antenna correlation to avoid larger communication system performance degradation.

[0049] The limit of Antenna ECC mentioned above should be selected properly. If it is too high, larger performance degradation cannot be excluded, and if it is too low, it will be too stringent for UE to pass the requirement. It is also hard to guarantee that all the parts of the ECC curves are still monotonous with ECC value larger than the limit as in the antenna distance range of OA, when the limit value is too low. It is better to be a little higher than the second peak of the Antenna ECC  curve in FIG. 3, which is in the range of 0.35 to 0.45 experientially, and most of the normal UE antenna design can meet.

[0050] From the perspective of 2-TX OTA TRP measurement, we can prove that antenna correlation also imposes its effect.

[0051] We can prove that the 2-TX OTA TRP value has a fixed average value with respect to all kinds of phase difference between the two antennas in question, which is the sum of TRP values of the two antennas: TRPAVG=TRP0+TRP1      (9)

[0052] where TRPi (i=0, 1) corresponds to the TRP value of each antenna inside the 2-antenna array.

[0053] We can also prove that the worst-case 2-TX OTA TRP deviation relative to the average TRP value described by equation (9) can be expressed as follows:

[0054] where ρ is the value of Antenna ECC.

[0055] When the TRP values of the two antennas are approximately equal, we can get TRPERR, WC≈ρ* (TRP0+TRP1) ≈ρ*TRPAVG      (11)

[0056] Since |10*log (1-ρ) | ≥|10*log (1+ρ) | , when (0≤ρ≤1) , the worst-case 2-TX TRP deviation in dB unit can be as follows: TRPERR (dB) , WC≈10log ( (1-ρ) *TRPAVG / TRPAVG) =10log (1-ρ)     (12)

[0057] From equation (10) , (11) and (12) we can find that the worst-case 2-TX TRP deviation relative to the average 2-TX TRP value is in direct proportion to the Antenna ECC. If we set a limit of 0.4 to Antenna ECC, the worst-case 2-TX TRP deviation will be always smaller than 2.22dB, thus the 2TX-TRP value will be stable to some extent with varying phase difference between the two antennas as well as the additional phase differences introduced by different 3rd generation partnership project (3GPP) 5G new radio (NR) single-layer 2-port Transmit Precoding Matrix Index (TPMI) indices.

[0058] In conclusion, by properly setting a limit to Antenna ECC can get the following benefits:

[0059] First, the channel capacity loss in an isotropic channel can be limited to some value when SNR is high, which can be predicted by an equation.

[0060] Second, extremely small antenna distances can be recognized and excluded, thus relatively poor correlation coefficient can be avoided in directional channel, and the average communication performance is ensured to a certain extent.

[0061] Third, relatively larger 2-TX TRP value deviation relative to the sum of the two TRP values of the two antennas in question measured individually can also be avoided.

[0062] Thus, both the throughput performance in MIMO OTA test and the 2-TX TRP performance in Single Input Single Output (SISO) OTA test are ensured to some extent.

[0063] FIG. 1 is a block diagram of a wireless communication system according to an embodiment of the invention. It should be noted that in order to clarify the concept of the invention, the wireless communication system 100 of FIG. 1 presents a simplified block diagram in which only the elements relevant to the invention are shown. However, the invention should not be limited to what is shown in FIG. 1.

[0064] In FIG. 1 one wireless communication system 100 may comprise at least a Transmitter 101 with NT antennas, a Receiver 102 with NR antennas and the wireless channel 103 which can be represented by NR X NT matrix H. A UE can be either a Transmitter 101 when it is transmitting signal or a Receiver 102 when it is receiving.

[0065] Our invention aims to use Antenna ECC as the assessment criterion on antenna correlation of UE, and by properly setting a limit to Antenna ECC, to guarantee the performance of the wireless communication system 100 described in FIG. 1, from both the perspective of channel capacity and the perspective of 2-TX OTA TRP deviation.

[0066] FIG. 2 is the flow diagram 200 illustrating an exemplary the procedure with embodiments of the current invention of how to use Antenna ECC as the assessment criterion on antenna correlation of UE and how to select a proper limit on Antenna ECC.

[0067] In step 201, the maximum acceptable worst-case 2-TX TRP deviation value is determined, then a limit value on antenna ECC can then be determined based on equation (12) , we can define this limit as ECC_TRP_DEV.

[0068] In step 202, the maximum acceptable channel capacity loss value, introduced by antenna correlation to isotropic channel with high SNR, is determined, then a limit value on antenna ECC can be determined based on equation (8) , we can define this limit as ECC_CAP_ISO.

[0069] In step 203, the antenna type and characteristics of the two antennas in question of UE and the channel models with directivity are determined for simulation purpose as described in step 204, the total patterns of the 2-antenna array with various rotation angles and orientations are also generated in step 203.

[0070] In step 204, simulate with the 2-antenna array pattern and the channel models determined in step 203 to get the Total ECC curves with various rotation angles and orientations of antenna array and Antenna ECC curve along the antenna distances ranging from 0.1 wavelength to 2 wavelengths.

[0071] In step 205, determine the limit on Antenna ECC from the perspective of channel capacity based on the curves obtained from the simulation in step 204. At least three factors need to be taken into consideration: first, the limit had better be just a little higher than the second peak of Antenna ECC curve, in order to avoid too high or too low a limit to Antenna ECC; second, the worst maximum capacity loss among various rotation angles and orientations of antenna array that can be accepted as shown in Fig. 4; third, the worst average capacity loss among various rotation angles and orientations of antenna array that can be accepted as shown in Fig. 4. We can define this limit as ECC_CAP_DIR.

[0072] In step 206, take into consideration the three limit values of Antenna ECC obtained in step 201, 202 and 205, namely ECC_TRP_DEV, ECC_CAP_ISO and ECC_CAP_DIR, and do some trade-off among different correlation effects, the final limit on Antenna ECC can be determined, the correlation effect on channel capacity could occupy the first priority.

[0073] Although the present invention has been described in connection with certain specific embodiments for instructional purposes, the present invention is not limited thereto. Accordingly, various modifications, adaptations, and combinations of various features of the described embodiments can be practiced without departing from the scope of the invention as set forth in the claims.
