Abstract

The present invention relates to a Datun: Complete Oral Care with Zero Waste. More particularly, the invention relates to a Datun: complete oral hygiene toothbrush (10) for single use that reduces carbon footprint and promotes sustainable ecosystem. A Datun: complete oral care unit (10) comprising a toothbrush (1), a tongue cleaner (2) and toothpowder / paste (3). Bristles (1a) of toothbrush (1) are made up of banana fibers (4) and handle (1b) is made of a special paper (5). Variety of plant seeds can be stored inside the handle (1b) of the toothbrush (1) and can be germinate when thrown away after the use. Tongue cleaner (2) is made up of bamboo and toothpowder (3) comprising achyranthes, amla, salt, moringa leaves and saunf. The oral care kit is entirely made of natural, sustainable, economical and biodegradable materials causing no harm to the environment and our overall health thereby reducing plastic waste.

[0005] The present invention relates to the technical field of oral hygiene particularly a disposable ecofriendly a toothbrush, infused with toothpowder / paste for Datun: Complete Oral hygiene / Care with Zero Waste for more effective maintenance of user’s oral hygiene.

[0006] BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

[0007] A toothbrush is the basis of daily oral hygiene and protects our teeth against bacteria. Existing toothbrushes are made of plastic and other durable materials that allow users to brush their teeth. Dentists across the world recommend a new toothbrush every 3 months. The global toothbrush market in 2022 is 6.9 billion USD and expected to reach 9.14 billion USD in 2029 excluding electric toothbrushes. In a year, around 4.7 and 0.75 billion toothbrushes are sold in the world and in India respectively. The global toothpaste market accounts for 35.5 billion USD and 1.45 billion USD in India. The current market size of toothbrush and toothpaste in India are 1.82 billion USD and 1.45 USD. The potential customers would be travelers and pilgrims.

[0008] Polypropylene is a product that constructs a plastic toothbrush with nylon-made bristles procured from non-renewable fossil fuels. Polypropylene plastic takes 350-500 years to degrade. So basically, this product is undoubtedly indestructible, causing constant pollution each time it is thrown away or being manufactured. Each year more than a million toothbrushes are manufactured and just dumped into oceans or heaps of garbage in landfills where they will be sitting for more than 1000 years without breaking down, this non-biodegradable trait causes tremendous pollution towards our Mother Earth.

[0009] Globally, it is estimated that over 23 billion plastic toothbrushes are discarded every year, according to a report by the Zero Waste Week campaign. Around 10 million tons of toothpaste tubes are thrown away each year. This number is expected to increase in the future with the growing population and the increasing use of disposable plastics.

[0010] Toothpaste, which often contains fluoride, is commonly used in conjunction with a toothbrush to increase the effectiveness of toothbrushing. The toothpaste contains Parabens, Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS), and Triclosan which can cause harm to our overall health. Parabens have a disruptive effect on the endocrine system and can disrupt hormone function by mimicking the hormone estrogen. In some cases, parabens may lead to breast cancer. Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS) can cause skin irritation and can aggravate aphthous ulcers. According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), a study conducted found a decrease in some thyroid hormones due to Triclosan. Thyroid hormones help control the metabolism of the body and keep it regulated. A decrease in such hormones could result in a slow metabolism. Further, the natural toothpaste has bitter or slight spicy taste.

[0011] Toothbrushes are available with different bristle textures, sizes, and forms. Most toothbrush bristles are made from nylon which is a synthetic material. Nylon is not a biodegradable material and cannot be broken down by microorganisms. Scientists estimate that nylon takes 30-40 years to decompose. Tongue cleaner, also known as tongue scraper, is a small tool that helps remove bacteria, food debris, and dead cells from the surface of the tongue.

[0012] A toothbrush contains mainly three components: a handle, shank, and a head embedded with soft or hard bristles. Most of the handles are made of cheap plastic material like polypropylene and sometimes with bamboo. The plastic toothbrushes are not biodegradable and cause significant pollution. In a year, around 4.7 and 0.75 billion toothbrushes are sold in the world and in India respectively excluding electric toothbrushes. The percentage of single use toothbrush is also significant among travelers and pilgrims. Some of the existing prior arts disclosing oral care devices are given below:

[0013] US Patent No. US9427077 discloses a foldable toothbrush with integrated toothpaste container and oral care kit. The foldable toothbrush comprises a detachable toothbrush head, a toothpaste connector, a toothpaste container, a bottom housing, and a top housing. The toothpaste container is a refillable toothpaste container with its rear end sealed by means of said toothpaste container seal and the toothpaste container can be replaced with a commercial toothpaste tube.

[0014] PCT Application No. W02004049860 discloses toothbrushes having needle- shaped bristle tapered at one end and manufacturing method thereof. The bristles are formed of polyester resin specifically PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate) or PBT (Polybutylene Terephthalate) resin which is a synthetic resin and non- biodegradable.

[0015] US Patent No. US5735864 discloses a disposable tongue cleaner. It relates to a disposable oral-hygiene device comprising a handle, an abrasive, textured surface, an absorbent material, and a flavored medicament for the purpose of removing foreign matter from the dorsal, or top, surface of the tongue. Handle is preferably of a flexible plastic such as polyethylene and the absorbent material consists of polyurethane.

[0016] However, the said prior arts do not disclose an oral care unit for single use comprising a toothbrush, a tongue cleaner and toothpaste / toothpowder made up of natural materials and biodegradable too.

[0018] Existing toothbrushes / bristles are made up of plastic or synthetic material. Non-biodegradable. Cause plastic pollution.

[0021] No availability of a single use biodegradable integrated toothbrush, indigenous powder, and tongue cleaner.

[0022] Therefore, there is a need for an oral care kit which is made up of natural materials and is biodegradable, causing no harm to the environment. The percentage of single use toothbrush is also significant among hoteliers, travelers, and pilgrims. No complete single use biodegradable oral cleaning kit is available. The price of conventional toothbrush and paste is twice that of Datun. Hotel managers and yatrinivas expressed their interest in Datun. According to India Tourism Statistics 2022, India has witnessed 610 million domestic and 7 million foreign tourists in 2021. Hence, there is a need for a complete oral care kit that is, Datun for single use comprising a biodegradable toothbrush, a tongue cleaner, toothpaste / toothpowder specifically for hoteliers, travelers, and pilgrims.

[0023] Accordingly, the present invention provides a Datun: Complete Oral Care with Zero Waste. Particularly, the present invention provides a Datun which is a single use oral care that reduces carbon footprint and promotes sustainable ecosystem. Prior existing toothbrushes are not biodegradable and cause significant pollution as they are made up of polypropylene. To decompose they may take 350 to 500 years and often end up in landfills and oceans. On the other hand, Datun is an integrated single use biodegradable toothbrush, indigenous toothpowder, and tongue cleaner. More particularly, the present invention provides a Datun complete oral care kit for single use comprising a toothbrush, a tongue cleaner and toothpowder, which are biodegradable and causing no harm to the environment and our overall health and is economical too. OBJECT(S) OF THE INVENTION

[0033] Accordingly, the invention discloses a sustainable biodegradable toothbrush for complete oral hygiene with Zero Waste, manufactured from pre-selected biodegradable materials, the toothbrush comprising: i. a handle member of a predetermined shape and size; and ii. a set of banana fiber bristles attached to one end of handle member.

[0034] Wherein the handle member of the toothbrush is made from one or more materials selected from the group comprising of wood, cardboard, paper and bioplastic.

[0035] The banana fiber bristles of the toothbrush are sharp and pointed edged having approximately 0.05 to 0.5 millimeter each. In one embodiment of the invention, the toothbrush is additionally equipped with a biodegradable bamboo stripped tongue scraper, having middle flat strip used as a scraper and twisted edges to grab handle, which is effective in scraping off bacteria and dirt from tongue.

The length of the packing box (11) is 17 cm, breadth is 5 cm, height is 5 cm and weight of packing box (11) is 44 gm. Thus, the packing box (11) is having dimension of 17x5x5 cubic centimeters (cm3) and weight of 44 grams (gms).

[0066] Figure 2a shows banana fibers (4) which are used to make bristles (la) of a toothbrush (1). Banana fiber (4) has its own physical and chemical characteristics. The chemical composition of banana fiber (4) is cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin. Banana fiber (4) is biodegradable and has no adverse effect on the environment.

Banana fibers (4) are embedded in the head of a brush (1) and act as bristles (la). These banana fibers (4) used as bristles (la) would degrade in a month. The length and weight of the head part of the toothbrush (1) are 5 cm and 1.32 gm respectively. No microbial contamination was noticed on bristles (la) even after use of 5 months.

The paper (5) used in the making of handle (lb) of a toothbrush (1) is 300 grams per square meter (GSM) and is biodegradable. Figure 3b shows a handle (lb) of a toothbrush (1) made from the paper (5) shown in figure 3a. The handle (lb) made with this paper (5) would be biodegradable and decompose in a week and do not get contaminated with fungus. The length and weight of the handle (lb) are 11 cm and 3.27 gm respectively. The handle (lb) of the toothbrush (1) being hollow can be used as a seed storage. Different variety of plant seeds can be stored in the handle (lb) of a toothbrush (1). The seeds stored in the handle (lb) of a toothbrush (1) germinate when thrown away after its use.

[0069] Figure 4 shows the schematic illustration of a toothbrush (1) made from the banana fibers (4) and the paper (5) shown in figures 2a and 3a respectively. The total length and weight of a toothbrush (1) including a handle (lb) and bristles (la) are 16 cm and 4.59 gm respectively.

[0070] Figure 5 shows the broad view of a tongue cleaner (2) made from the bamboo. Bamboo is a renewable, eco-friendly material known for its antibacterial properties. Bamboo tongue cleaner (2) provides the same functionality as plastic or metal tongue cleaner do. The length and weight of a tongue cleaner (2) are 8 cm and 0.42 gm, respectively.

[0071] Figure 6 shows the toothpowder (3) for a complete oral care kit (10) for single use. Datun contains infused with toothpowder (3), hence no need to purchase toothpaste separately. This toothpowder (3) is made from achyranthes, amla, salt, moringa leaves and saunf. Achyranthes (also known as chaff flower) is a medicinal plant and very useful in tooth related problems. Amla or Indian gooseberry plays a significant role in dental health due to its significant antibacterial and astringent properties. Amla is known to support the connective tissue in the gums. Amla also helps keep teeth from loosening. Moringa leaves powder is a potent antimicrobial and is used as an antiseptic. Therefore, moringa can effectively destroy odor causing bacteria in the mouth as well as bacteria that can lead to cavities and gum disease. The moringa powder also contains a high number of vitamins and minerals that are beneficial for improving and maintaining healthy teeth and gums. Saunf (also known as fennel seed) is used in oral care products for its anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, and analgesic properties, which may help to soothe mouth ailments such as ulcers and sore gums. According to the Indian Journal of Dental Research, fennel seeds may also play an important role in cavity prevention due to their ability to inhibit the growth of certain bacteria by raising the pH of saliva. Since saunf (fennel) works to fight bacteria in the mouth, it can help to control bad breath as well. The weight of the toothpowder (3) used in Datun: compete oral care kit (10) for single use is 5 gm.

[0074] Example 1: Comparative effectiveness of a Datun comprising toothbrush with bristles made from banana fibers and a toothbrush with nylon bristles:

[0075] Effectiveness of a toothbrush with bristles made from banana fibers over a toothbrush with nylon bristles was tested over the two groups of people. One group was provided with the toothbrush with nylon bristles and other group was provided with a toothbrush with bristles made from banana fibers. Dental examination was conducted in the start and after one month. The results are shown in figure 7, in which a Lingual view and Occlusion view of teeth are shown. Also, the results for using a toothbrush with nylon bristles and a toothbrush with bristles made from banana fibers after 2ndand 3rdquadrants are shown in figure 7. It was found that the cleansing effect of Datun comprising toothbrush with bristles made from banana fibers is much better than the toothbrush with nylon bristles. This effectiveness of a Datun comprising toothbrush with bristles made from banana fibers and a toothbrush with nylon bristles was tested on the basis of “ Comparative Effectiveness of Chewing stick and toothbrush: A Randomized Clinical Trial” presented by Malik, Aeeza S., et al.”

[0076] Example 2: Tongue coating index of Datun comprising tongue cleaner made from bamboo:

[0077] Tongue coating was assessed using the Winkle Tongue Coating Index (WTCI) of a Datun comprising tongue cleaner made from bamboo. The dorsum of the tongue was divided into 6 areas (3 posterior, 3 anterior) and tongue coating was assessed in each sextant as follows; 0 = no coating, 1 = light coating, 2 = severe coating. The WTCI was obtained by adding all 6 scores, for a possible range of 0-12. The results are shown in figures 8a and 8b. It can be seen from the figure 8a that the WTCI was reduced from 9 to 3 and in figure 8b, WTCI was reduced from 7 to 3 after the use of bamboo tongue cleaner. Hence, bamboo tongue cleaner provides better results than the plastic or metal tongue cleaner.

We claim:

A sustainable biodegradable toothbrush for complete oral hygiene with Zero Waste, manufactured from pre-selected bio-degradable materials, the toothbrush comprising: i. a handle member of a predetermined shape and size; and ii. a set of banana fiber bristles attached to one end of handle member.

2. The toothbrush as claimed in claim 1, wherein the handle member is made from one or more materials selected from the group comprising of wood, cardboard, paper and bioplastic.

3. The toothbrush as claimed in claim 1, wherein the banana fiber bristles are sharp and pointed edged having approximately 0.05 to 0.5 millimeter each.

4. The toothbrush as claimed in claim 1, wherein the toothbrush is additionally equipped with a biodegradable bamboo stripped tongue scraper, having middle flat strip used as a scraper and twisted edges to grab handle, which is effective in scraping off bacteria and dirt from tongue.

The toothbrush as claimed in claim 1, wherein the toothbrush is infused with an indigenous toothpowder / paste dispensing assembly comprising a medicinally active mixture selected from the group comprising of Achyranthes, Amla, Epsom salt, Moringa leaves, Saunf, Barleriaprionitis bark (Vajradanti), Acacia arabica bark (Babool), curcumalongrhizome (turmeric), Methaspicata leaf (Pudina), Salvadorapersica plant (Meswak), charcoal or mixtures thereof, more preferably Achyranthes, Amla, Epsom salt, Moringa leaves, Saunf mixture.

6. The toothbrush as claimed in claim 1, wherein the indigenous toothpowder / paste dispensing assembly is preferably selected from Achyranthes, Amla, Epsom salt, Moringa leaves and Saunf mixture.

7. The sustainable toothbrush as claimed in claim 5, wherein the toothpowder / paste dispensing assembly is an ecofriendly paper, cardboard, wood or bioplastic pouch.

8. An oral care kit comprising: a package of sustainable toothbrush, tongue scraper and toothpowder / paste as a disposable unit made of an ecofriendly cardboard box, wood, or bioplastic material that is compact, economical and bio-degradable with zero waste.
