Abstract
Description
OSTOMY POUCH WITH FILTER PROTECTIVE PANELBACKGROUND
[0001] The following description relates to an ostomy appliance, and more particularly, an ostomy pouch including a deodorizing filter and a filter protection.
[0002] Ostomy pouches for collecting body waste are used by patients who have had surgery such as a colostomy, ileostomy, or urostomy. An ostomy pouch includes an inlet opening for receiving body waste discharged from a stoma for collection within the pouch. Typically, the ostomy pouch also includes a gas outlet covered by a filter assembly for odor filtering and egress of gas collected in the pouch. However, in some instances, liquid, semisolid or solid body waste collected in the pouch may flow to and block the filter assembly, thereby restricting egress of gas through the filter assembly. This may lead to ballooning of the pouch or undesirable inflation of the pouch.
[0003] The pouch ballooning can cause anxiety and disruptions in users’ quality of life, such as lack of discretion, fear of leakage, inconvenient user intervention to release gas pressure, etc. Some common methods to release built-up gas include opening a pouch coupling system, which is often referred to as “burping”, draining a pouch, and peeling back a skin barrier. Many ostomates have reported spending many hours troubleshooting pouch ballooning issues and feeling resigned about the current ostomy pouch systems.
[0004] Ostomy filter protection features have been developed to reduce filter clogging that can cause the pouch ballooning problems. For example, US 2023 / 0099447, which is commonly assigned with the present application and incorporated herein in its entirety by reference, disclosesan ostomy pouch including a filter assembly and a multi-stage filter protection, which includes a prefilter formed from a foam and a microperforated protective panel covering the prefilter.
[0005] The present disclosure provides improvements to the filter protection.BRIEF SUMMARY
[0006] An ostomy filter protection system is provided according to various embodiments.
[0007] In one aspect, the ostomy pouch appliance may include a body-side wall and a distal wall joined along a peripheral seal defining a collection cavity for collecting body waste, an inlet opening for receiving body waste from a stoma and a gas outlet formed in an upper portion of the distal wall for egress of gas collected in the collection cavity. The ostomy pouch appliance may also include a filter assembly attached to the distal wall covering the gas outlet and a protective panel arranged between the body-side wall and the distal wall for protecting the filter assembly. The protective panel may be joined with the body-side wall and the distal wall along the peripheral seal and intermittently attached to the body-side wall by at least one body-side tack seal and intermittently attached to the distal wall by at least one distal tack seal.
[0008] The at least one body-side tack seal and the at least one distal tack seal may be configured and arranged such that when the ostomy pouch appliance becomes inflated from gas collected in the collection cavity, the protective panel is pulled by both pouch walls and a plurality of drainage channels are formed between the protective panel and the body-side wall and between the protective panel and the distal wall to allow body waste captured therebetween to flow down to the collection cavity. The at least one body-side tack seal and the at least one distal tack seal may also limit separation between the body-side wall and the distal wall to minimize ballooning of the ostomy pouch appliance.
[0009] In an embodiment, the at least one body-side tack seal may include at least two bodyside tack seals, and the at least one distal tack seal may include at least two distal tack seals. The at least two body-side tack seals and the at least two distal side tack seals may be arranged such that the protective panel is alternating attached to the body-side wall and the distal wall.
[0010] In an embodiment, the at least one distal tack seal may include four distal tack seals, and the at least one body-side seal may include two body-side seals. In an embodiment, the at least one distal tack seal may include two high distal tack seals and a low distal tack seal, and the at least one body-side tack seal may include four low body-side tack seals, wherein the high distal tack seals are located closer to the filter assembly than the low distal tack seal and the low bodyside tack seals. The two high distal tack seals, the low distal tack seal, and the four low body-side tack seals may be arranged such that the protective panel is altematingly attached to the distal wall and the body-side wall.
[0011] The body-side tack seals may be formed by attaching the protective panel to the bodyside wall at predetermined areas, and the distal tack seals may be formed by attaching the protective panel to the distal wall at predetermined areas. In an embodiment, the body-side tack seals may be formed by heat sealing the protective panel and the body-side wall at predetermined areas, and the distal tack seals may be formed by heat sealing the protective panel and the bodyside wall at predetermined areas. In some embodiments, each of the body-side tack seals and the distal tack seals may be configured to have generally a circular shape having a diameter of about 0.2 inches to about 0.4 inches.
[0012] In an embodiment, the protective panel may be formed from a perforated film comprising a plurality of openings. Each of the openings may be provided with a ridge around its periphery, which may be formed as a raised edge protruding away from a surface of the protectivepanel. The ridge may be configured to provide an increased thickness and volume around each of the openings and increase the surface energy around the periphery of each opening to deter body waste from passing therethrough while allowing gas to flow through the opening.
[0013] In an embodiment, the ridges may be formed on a first surface of the protective panel, and the protective panel may be arranged such that the first surface faces the distal wall and the ridges protrude toward the distal wall. The ridges may be configured to function as a spacer between the protective panel and the distal wall to prevent them from clinging together and obstruct gas flow paths.
[0014] In another aspect, the ostomy pouch appliance may include a body-side wall and a distal wall joined along a peripheral seal defining a collection cavity for collecting body waste, an inlet opening for receiving body waste from a stoma and a gas outlet formed in an upper portion of the distal wall for egress of gas collected in the collection cavity. The ostomy pouch appliance may also include a filter assembly attached to the distal wall covering the gas outlet and a protective panel arranged between the body-side wall and the distal wall for protecting the filter assembly, wherein the protective panel may be formed from a perforated film comprising a plurality of openings including a ridge formed around a periphery of each opening. The ridge may be formed as a raised edge protruding away from a surface of the protective panel and configured to provide an increased thickness and volume around each of the openings and increase the surface energy around the periphery of each opening to deter body waste from passing therethrough while allowing gas to flow through.
[0015] The protective panel formed from a perforated film may be joined with the body-side wall and the distal wall along the peripheral seal and intermittently attached to the body-side wall by at least one body-side tack seal and intermittently attached to the distal wall by at least onedistal tack seal. The body-side tack seals and distal tack seals may be configured such that when the ostomy pouch appliance becomes inflated from gas collected in the collection cavity, the protective panel is pulled by both sides and a plurality of drainage channels are formed between the protective panel and body-side wall and between the protective panel and distal wall to allow body waste captured therebetween to flow down to the collection cavity.
[0016] In any of foregoing embodiments, the protective panel may be formed from a polymeric film perforated via a thermal perforation process. In such embodiments, the ridge may be formed when a hot needle used in the thermal perforation process melts a portion of the polymeric film as the polymeric film is perforated to form the plurality of openings. The melted portion of the polymeric film may be deposited around the periphery of each opening and solidifies to form the ridge around each of the plurality of openings.
