Description

Communication control device and communication control method

[0001] The present invention relates to a communication control device and a communication control method.

[0002] Standardization organizations such as the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) are currently developing specifications for Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC). MEC enables communication that meets strict latency requirements, such as for autonomous driving, by performing service processing on edge servers located close to user terminals.

[0003] The 3GPP MEC specification proposes a method of responding with the IP address of an edge server located close to the user terminal, using the IP address of the user terminal as location information (see, for example, Non-Patent Document 1).

[0004] Also, DNS Geo-Location technology is known, which uses the IP address of the local DNS of the query source as location information, and is provided as a cloud computing service (see, for example, Non-Patent Document 2).

[0005] Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC); Use Cases and Requirements, ETSI GS MEC 002 v3.1.1(2023-04).Enhanced DNS Support towards Distributed MEC Environment, ETSI White Paper No. 39, <https: / / www.etsi.org / images / files / ETSIWhitePapers / etsi-wp39-Enhanced-DNS-Support-towards-Distributed-MEC-Environment.pdf> .

[0006] However, in conventional technologies, for example, when selecting an edge server to bypass in the event of an edge server failure or when selecting an edge server to connect to first, an edge server with a large communication delay may be selected even if it is geographically close, resulting in failure to satisfy the delay condition.Furthermore, accesses may be concentrated on one edge server, causing communication congestion.

[0007] One embodiment of the present invention has been made in consideration of the above-mentioned problems, and reduces the occurrence in a wireless communication system of an edge location with a large communication delay being selected, which makes it impossible to satisfy the delay conditions, and of communication congestion caused by concentrated access to an edge server.

[0008] In order to solve the above problems, a communication control device according to an embodiment of the present invention is a communication control device of a wireless communication system including a plurality of edge bases, each having an edge server and a forwarding device, and a communication control device, and includes an acquisition unit that acquires the traffic volume of the plurality of edge bases, a priority determination unit that determines the priority of the edge server for each of the edge bases based on the network distance between the edge servers and the traffic volume of the plurality of edge bases, and a priority setting unit that sets the priority of the edge server determined for each of the edge bases in the wireless communication system.

[0009] According to one embodiment of the present invention, in a wireless communication system, it is possible to reduce the occurrence of an edge location with a large communication delay being selected, which results in the delay condition not being met, and the occurrence of communication congestion due to concentrated access to an edge server.

[0010] FIG. 1 is a diagram illustrating an example of a system configuration of a wireless communication system according to a first embodiment; FIG. 2 is a diagram illustrating an example of information managed by the wireless communication system according to the first embodiment; FIG. 3 is a flowchart illustrating an example of processing by a communication control device according to the first embodiment; FIG. 4 is a diagram illustrating an example of a system configuration of a wireless communication system according to a second embodiment; FIG. 5 is a flowchart illustrating an example of processing by a communication control device according to the second embodiment; FIG. 6 is a diagram illustrating an example of a hardware configuration of a computer; and FIG. 7 is a diagram for explaining an overview of a wireless communication system including an MEC system.

[0011] Hereinafter, an embodiment of the present invention will be described with reference to the drawings. The embodiment described below is merely an example, and the embodiment to which the present invention is applied is not limited to the following embodiment.

[0012] <Wireless Communication System> Before describing the wireless communication system according to this embodiment, a wireless communication system that is the premise of this embodiment will be described.

[0013] Fig. 7 is a diagram illustrating an overview of a wireless communication system including an MEC system. In the example of Fig. 7, a wireless communication system 1 includes a multi-access edge computing (MEC) system 2 having a plurality of edge bases 10a, 10b, and 10c and an authoritative domain name system (DNS) 20. In the following description, the term "edge base 10" is used to refer to any edge base among the plurality of edge bases 10a, 10b, and 10c.

[0014] The MEC system 2 is a system that realizes low-latency communication by performing service processing in an edge server 11 located close to a user terminal 4. For example, the MEC system 2 provides a closed network service or the like using the edge server 11 installed at an edge base and a user terminal 4 connected to a mobile network 2.

[0015] The edge server 11 is a server that provides predetermined services to the user terminal 4. The forwarding device 12 is a device that performs packet data forwarding processing using a dedicated router or software that can perform functions equivalent to a router. The authoritative DNS 20 is a DNS server that manages domain names and IP addresses in association with each other and can return responses without querying other DNS servers.

[0016] The technology disclosed in Non-Patent Document 1 proposes a method of responding with the IP address of an edge server located close to the user terminal, using the IP address of the user terminal as location information. However, this method has the following problem with providing a closed network connection when, for example, the edge server 11 in the edge base 10a closest to the user terminal 4 fails. Note that a similar problem exists when the user terminal 4 first connects to the edge server 11.

[0017] (Problem 1) When an edge site 10 that is geographically close but has a large communication delay is selected as a connection destination, the increased communication delay due to the detour may exceed the predetermined delay condition required for communication.

[0018] 7, for example, the edge base 10a is closest to the user terminal 4, and in the absence of a failure, the user terminal 4 connects to the edge server 11 at the edge base 10a. The edge base 10b is geographically close to the user terminal 4, but is a detour in terms of the network, resulting in a large communication delay. The edge base 10c is geographically distant, but is closer to the user terminal 4 than the edge base 10b in terms of the network.

[0019] In this state, if a failure occurs in the edge server 11 at the edge base 10a, for example, in the conventional technology, data communication with the user terminal 4 is transferred to the edge base 10b. However, with this method, since the edge bases 10a and 10b are distant from each other in terms of the network, communication delays increase, and it may not be possible to satisfy the predetermined delay conditions.

[0020] (Problem 2) Access may be concentrated on one edge server, causing communication congestion. For example, in FIG. 7, if a failure occurs in the edge server 11 at the edge site 10a and all data communications with multiple user terminals 4 are transferred to the edge site 10b, access may be concentrated on the edge server 11 at the edge site 10v, causing communication congestion. When communication congestion occurs, it becomes difficult to establish stable communication.

[0021] In order to solve the above problem, the wireless communication system according to this embodiment has a system configuration as shown in FIG. 1, as an example.

[0022] [First Embodiment] <System Configuration> Fig. 1 is a diagram illustrating an example of the system configuration of a wireless communication system according to a first embodiment. In the example of Fig. 1, the wireless communication system 100 includes an MEC system 101 having a plurality of edge bases 110a, 110b, and 110c and a communication control device 120, and a mobile network 102. In the following description, the term "edge base 110" is used to refer to any edge base among the plurality of edge bases 110a, 110b, and 110c.

[0023] The MEC system 101 is a system that provides predetermined services such as closed network services by, for example, an edge server 111 installed in an edge base 110 and a user terminal 103 connected to a mobile network 102. The mobile network 102 is, for example, a mobile network such as 5G (5th Generation) or LTE (Long Term Evolution).

[0024] Each edge base 110 of the MEC system 101 is provided with an edge server 111, a forwarding device 112, and an authoritative DNS 113. The edge server 111 is a server that provides predetermined services, such as closed network services, to the user terminal 103. The forwarding device 112 is a device that performs packet data forwarding processing using a dedicated router or software capable of processing functions equivalent to a router. The authoritative DNS 113 is a DNS server that manages domain names and IP addresses in association with each other and can return responses without querying other DNS servers. In this way, the wireless communication system 100 according to this embodiment is provided with an authoritative DNS 113 in each of the multiple edge bases 110.

[0025] The communication control device 120 is an information processing device having a computer configuration, or a system including multiple information processing devices. The communication control device 120 is a computer provided in the communication control device 120, and realizes each functional configuration shown in FIG. 1 by executing a predetermined program stored in a storage medium or the like. In the example of FIG. 1, the communication control device 120 has functional configurations such as a delay condition setting unit 121, an acquisition unit 122, a priority determination unit 123, a priority setting unit 124, and a storage unit 125. Note that at least a portion of each of the above functional configurations may be realized by hardware.

[0026] The delay condition setting unit 121 receives conditions for an allowable delay time (hereinafter referred to as delay conditions 127) from a user, an administrator, or the like, and stores the conditions in the storage unit 125. The delay condition setting unit 121 also inputs the delay conditions 127 to the priority determination unit 123. The delay conditions 127 received from a user, an administrator, or the like are an example of predetermined delay conditions. The predetermined delay conditions may be based on, for example, a service provided by the edge server 111 or a request from the user terminal 103.

[0027] The acquisition unit 122 executes an acquisition process to acquire the traffic volume of the multiple edge bases 110 and input the acquired traffic volume to the priority determination unit 123. The acquisition unit 122 may acquire the traffic volume by measuring the traffic volume of each edge base 110, or may acquire the traffic volume measured by the edge server 111, the transfer device 112, or the like at each edge base 110. The traffic volume may be various information for determining the load of each edge base 110, such as the amount of data communication, the number of connections of user terminals 103, or the bandwidth usage rate.

[0028] The priority determination unit 123 executes a priority determination process for determining the priority of the edge server 111 for each edge base 110 based on the network distance between the edge servers 111 and the traffic volume of the edge bases 110 .

[0029] For example, the communication control device 120 stores in advance in the storage unit 125 or the like a network distance (hereinafter referred to as NW distance) 126 between the edge servers 111. Fig. 2 shows an example of the NW distance 126 stored in advance in the storage unit 125 or the like. In the example of Fig. 2, the NW distance 126 stores the number of relay devices between the edge bases 110.

[0030] In Figure 2, "Location A" corresponds to the edge location 110a in Figure 1, "Location B" corresponds to the edge location 110b in Figure 1, and "Location C" corresponds to the edge location 110c in Figure 1.

[0031] 2 uses the number of transit devices as the network distance between edge bases 110. For example, the example in FIG. 2 indicates that the number of devices (network equipment) through which data passes from base A to base B is "8." In this case, the expected amount of delay between edge bases 110 can be calculated from the amount of delay per device and the number of transit devices.

[0032] The number of transit devices is an example of the network distance between the edge bases 110. For example, the network distance between the edge bases 110 may be, for example, a delay time between the edge bases 110 measured at a predetermined time interval. In short, the network distance between the edge bases 110 may be data indicating a communication delay between the edge bases 110 or data from which a communication delay between the edge bases 110 can be estimated.

[0033] The priority determination unit 123 determines the priority of the edge server 111 for each edge base 110 based on, for example, the NW distance 126 .

[0034] For example, the priority determination unit 123 sets an edge server 111 that satisfies a predetermined delay condition 127 as a higher priority edge server 111 based on the network distance 126. Furthermore, when there are multiple edge servers 111 that satisfy the predetermined delay condition 127, the priority determination unit 123 changes the priority of the edge servers 111 based on the traffic volume acquired by the acquisition unit 122 so as to distribute the load among the multiple edge servers 111.

[0035] For example, when determining the priority of the edge server 111 at base A, the priority determination unit 123 sets the priority of the edge server 111 at base A, which is the own base, to the highest. Also, based on the NW distance 126 as shown in FIG. 2 , it is assumed that the edge server 111 at base C satisfies a predetermined delay condition 127, and the edge server 111 at base B does not satisfy the predetermined delay condition 127. In this case, the priority determination unit 123 sets the priority of the edge server 111 at base C to be higher than the priority of the edge server 111 at base B.

[0036] 2 , the edge server 111 at the site C and the edge server 111 at the site B satisfy a predetermined delay condition 127. Also, the traffic volume of the edge server 111 at the site C acquired by the acquisition unit 122 is assumed to be relatively high. In this case, the priority determination unit 123 may set the priority of the edge server 111 at the site B higher than the priority of the edge server 111 at the site C so as to distribute the load on the edge server 111 at the site C.

[0037] The delay condition setting unit 121 may accept a setting as to whether to respond with an edge server 111 that does not satisfy the predetermined delay condition 127 or to respond as if there is no destination when there is no edge server 111 that satisfies the predetermined delay condition 127. Furthermore, if the priority determination unit 123 is set to respond as if there is no destination when there is no edge server 111 that satisfies the predetermined delay condition 127, the priority determination unit 123 may determine the priority of the edge server 111 by excluding the edge server 111 that does not satisfy the predetermined delay condition 127.

[0038] The priority setting unit 124 sets the priority of the edge server 111 determined for each edge base 110 by the priority determination unit 123 in the authoritative DNS 113 of each edge base 110. For example, the priority setting unit 124 creates an A record 201 for base A as shown in FIG. 2 based on the priority of the edge server 111 at base A (edge base 110a) determined by the priority determination unit 123, and sets (distributes) the A record 201 for base A in the authoritative DNS 113 of base A. As shown in FIG. 2, in the A record 201 for base A, records defining the association between the host name and the IP address of the edge server 111 at each edge base 110 are set in descending order of the priority determined by the priority determination unit 123.

[0039] For example, when the authoritative DNS 113 of base A, in which the A record of base A is set, receives an inquiry from the user terminal 103, it responds to the user terminal 103 by giving top priority to its own base, base A, followed by base C, which is closest in network distance, and then listing base B.

[0040] The user terminal 103 first connects to the edge server 111 at site A from the IP addresses of each site that are returned, and if the edge server 111 at site AS is out of order, it connects to the edge server 111 at site C.

[0041] <Processing Flow> Next, a description will be given of a processing flow of the communication control method according to the embodiment 1. Fig. 3 is a flowchart showing an example of processing of the communication control device according to the embodiment 1. This processing shows an example of processing executed by the communication control device 120 in the wireless communication system 100 described in Fig. 1.

[0042] In step S301, the acquisition unit 122 acquires the traffic volume of the multiple edge bases 110. For example, the acquisition unit 122 measures and acquires the traffic volume of each edge base 110. Alternatively, the acquisition unit 122 may acquire the traffic volume measured at each edge base 110.

[0043] In step S302, the priority determination unit 123 acquires a predetermined delay condition and a network distance between the edge servers 111. For example, the priority determination unit 123 acquires the delay condition 127 and the NW distance 126 stored in the storage unit 125.

[0044] In step S303, the priority determination unit 123 sets, for each edge base 110, the edge server 111 that satisfies the delay condition higher in the priority order for the edge server 111 based on the acquired network distance. For example, the priority determination unit 123 uses the network distance 126 as shown in FIG. 2 to determine whether the delay condition 127 is satisfied when a request is transferred to the edge server 111 of another edge base 110. Furthermore, the priority determination unit 123 sets the priority of the edge server 111 of another edge base 110 that satisfies the delay condition 127 higher than the priority of the edge server 111 of another edge base 110 that does not satisfy the delay condition 127.

[0045] In step S304, the priority determination unit 123 determines whether there are multiple edge servers 111 that satisfy the delay condition in each edge base 110. For example, if there are multiple edge servers 111 that satisfy the delay condition 127 in any of the multiple edge bases 110, the priority determination unit 123 determines that there are multiple edge servers 111 that satisfy the predetermined delay condition.

[0046] If there are multiple edge servers 111 that satisfy the delay condition, the priority determination unit 123 shifts the process to step S305. On the other hand, if there are not multiple edge servers 111 that satisfy the delay condition, the priority determination unit 123 shifts the process to step S306.

[0047] In step S305, the priority determination unit 123 changes the priorities of the edge servers 111 so as to distribute the loads on the edge servers 111 of the multiple edge bases 110, based on the traffic volume of each edge base 110 acquired by the acquisition unit 122. For example, the priority determination unit 123 sets the priorities of the edge servers 111 of an edge base 110 that has multiple edge servers 111 that satisfy the delay condition 127 so as to distribute the loads on the edge servers 111 of each edge base 110.

[0048] In step S306, the priority setting unit 124 sets the priority of the edge server 111 determined for each edge base 110 by the priority determination unit 123 in the authoritative DNS 113 of the multiple edge bases 110. For example, the priority setting unit 124 creates an A record 201 for base A as shown in FIG. 2 based on the priority of the edge server 111 of the edge base 110a determined by the priority determination unit 123, and distributes the A record 201 to the authoritative DNS 113 of the edge base 110a. In a similar manner, the priority setting unit 124 creates an A record for each edge base 110 and distributes it to the authoritative DNS 113 of each edge base 110.

[0049] 3, for example, in the wireless communication system 1 as shown in FIG. 1, if a failure occurs in the edge server 111 at the edge base 110a, data communication by the user terminal 103 is preferentially transferred to the edge server 111 that satisfies the delay condition 127. Also, if the edge servers 111 at the edge bases 110b and 110c satisfy the delay condition 127, data communication by the user terminal 103 is transferred so as to distribute the load on the edge servers 111 at the edge bases 110b and 110c.

[0050] Therefore, according to Example 1, in the wireless communication system 1, it is possible to reduce the occurrence of an edge site 110 with a large communication delay being selected, which makes it impossible to satisfy the delay condition, and the occurrence of communication congestion due to concentrated access to the edge server 111.

[0051] [Second Embodiment] <System Configuration> Fig. 4 is a diagram illustrating an example of a system configuration of a wireless communication system according to a second embodiment. As illustrated in Fig. 4, the wireless communication system 1 according to the second embodiment includes an MEC system 101 and a mobile network 102, similar to the wireless communication system 1 according to the first embodiment. The MEC system 101 according to the second embodiment has the same functional configuration as the MEC system 101 according to the first embodiment described with reference to Fig. 1.

[0052] However, the priority setting unit 124 according to the second embodiment sets the priority of the edge server 111 determined for each edge base 110 to the OSS / BSS 401 of the mobile network 102 that controls the connection endpoints 402a, 402b, and 402c between the mobile network 102 and the MEC system 101. In the following description, when referring to any of the connection endpoints 402a, 402b, and 402c, the term "connection endpoint 402" is used.

[0053] Here, the connection endpoint 402 is, for example, a User Plane Function (UPF) that is a network function (NF) that terminates or relays User Plane communication in a 5G core network. Alternatively, the connection endpoint 402 may be a Packet data network Gateway (PGW) that is a gateway that serves as a connection point between the mobile network 102 and an external network in an Evolved Packet Core (EPC) that is a core network such as LTE.

[0054] An OSS (Operation Support System) is an operation support system of a telecommunications carrier that monitors and controls the constituent devices of a mobile network. A BSS (Operation System) is a business support system used for customer management, order management, etc. in a telecommunications carrier. Note that the OSS / BSS 401 is an example of a support system that controls the connection endpoint 402 in the mobile network 102, and may be called by a different name.

[0055] In addition, in FIG. 4, the connection endpoint 402a is a connection endpoint closer to the edge base 110a, the connection endpoint 402b is a connection endpoint closer to the edge base 110b, and the connection endpoint 402c is a connection endpoint closer to the edge base 110c.

[0056] For example, assume that a failure occurs in the edge server 111 of the edge base 110a with which the user terminal 103 is communicating data. In this case, the OSS / BSS 401 resets the bearer of the user terminal 103 to the connection endpoint 402c that is closer to the edge base 110c with a higher priority, based on the priority of the edge server 111 for the edge base 110a set by the priority setting unit 124.

[0057] <Processing Flow> Next, a processing flow of a communication control method according to the second embodiment will be described. Fig. 5 is a flowchart showing an example of processing by the communication control device according to the first embodiment. This processing shows an example of processing executed by the communication control device 120 in the wireless communication system 100 described in Fig. 4. Among the processing shown in Fig. 5, the processing of steps S301 to S305 is the same as the processing by the communication control device according to the first embodiment described in Fig. 3, and therefore description thereof will be omitted here.

[0058] In step S501, the priority setting unit 124 sets the priority of the edge server 111 determined for each edge base 110 by the priority determination unit 123 to the OSS / BSS 401 of the mobile network 102.

[0059] In this way, the communication control device 120 may set the priority of the edge server 111 determined for each edge location 110 in the support system (OSS / BSS 401) that controls the connection endpoint 402 of the mobile network 102, instead of in the authoritative DNS 113 of each edge location 110.

[0060] 5, for example, in the wireless communication system 1 as shown in FIG. 4, if a failure occurs in the edge server 111 at the edge base 110a, data communication by the user terminal 103 is preferentially transferred to the edge server 111 that satisfies the delay condition 127. Also, if the edge servers 111 at the edge bases 110b and 110c satisfy the delay condition 127, data communication by the user terminal 103 is transferred so as to distribute the load on the edge servers 111 at the edge bases 110b and 110c.

[0061] Therefore, in Example 2, in the wireless communication system 1, it is possible to reduce the occurrence of an edge site 110 with a large communication delay being selected, which makes it impossible to satisfy the delay condition, and the occurrence of communication congestion due to concentrated access to the edge server 111.

[0062] In this way, the priority setting unit 124 may be configured to set the priority of the edge server 111 determined for each edge base 110 by the priority determination unit 123 in the wireless communication system 1, and various applications are possible for the destination of setting the priority. For example, the priority setting unit 124 may be configured to set the priority of the edge server 111 determined for each edge base 110 by the priority determination unit 123 in the transfer device 112 of each edge base 110.

[0063] <Hardware Configuration Example> (Hardware Configuration of Communication Control Device) The communication control device 120 has, for example, the hardware configuration of a computer 600 as shown in Fig. 6. Alternatively, the communication control device 120 is realized by a plurality of computers 600.

[0064] 6 is a diagram showing an example of the hardware configuration of a computer. In the example of Fig. 6, a computer 600 includes a processor 601, a memory 602, a storage device 603, a communication device 604, an input device 605, an output device 606, a bus B, etc.

[0065] The processor 601 is, for example, an arithmetic unit such as a CPU (Central Processing Unit) that executes predetermined programs to realize various functions. The memory 602 is a storage medium readable by the computer 600, and includes, for example, a RAM (Random Access Memory) and a ROM (Read Only Memory). The storage device 603 is a computer-readable storage medium, and may include, for example, a HDD (Hard Disk Drive), an SSD (Solid State Drive), various optical disks, and magneto-optical disks.

[0066] The communication device 604 includes one or more pieces of hardware (communication devices) for communicating with other devices via a wireless or wired network. The input device 605 is an input device (e.g., a keyboard, a mouse, a microphone, a switch, a button, a sensor, etc.) that receives input from the outside. The output device 606 is an output device (e.g., a display, a speaker, an LED lamp, etc.) that outputs to the outside. Note that the input device 605 and the output device 606 may be integrated into one device (e.g., an input / output device such as a touch panel display).

[0067] The bus B is commonly connected to the above components and transmits, for example, address signals, data signals, and various control signals. The processor 601 is not limited to a CPU, and may be, for example, a DSP (Digital Signal Processor), a PLD (Programmable Logic Device), or an FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array).

[0068] (Supplementary Note) The communication control device 120 in this embodiment is not limited to being realized by a dedicated device, but may also be realized by a general-purpose computer. In this case, a program for realizing this function may be recorded on a computer-readable recording medium, and the program recorded on this recording medium may be read into a computer system and executed to realize the function. Note that the term "computer system" here includes hardware such as an OS and peripheral devices.

[0069] Furthermore, "computer-readable recording medium" includes various storage devices such as portable media such as flexible disks, optical magnetic disks, ROMs, CD-ROMs, and storage devices built into computer systems. Furthermore, "computer-readable recording medium" may also include devices that dynamically store a program for a short period of time, such as a communication line when transmitting a program via a network such as the Internet or a communication line such as a telephone line, and devices that store a program for a certain period of time, such as volatile memory within a computer system that serves as a server or client in such cases.

[0070] Furthermore, the above program may be one that realizes part of the above-mentioned functions, or may be one that can realize the above-mentioned functions in combination with a program already recorded in a computer system, or may be one that is realized using hardware such as a PLD or FPGA.

[0071] <Effects of the embodiment> According to the present embodiment, in the wireless communication system 1, it is possible to reduce the occurrence of an edge base 110 with a large communication delay being selected, which makes it impossible to satisfy the delay condition, and to reduce the occurrence of communication congestion due to concentrated access to the edge server 111.

[0072] Specifically, according to each embodiment of the present invention, in an MEC service, even if an edge base 110 close to a user fails, a detouring destination is automatically set to another edge base 110 that is closer to the network, thereby enabling communication with minimal delay. Also, in an MEC service, if there are multiple edge bases that satisfy the delay conditions, the detouring destinations for each DNS record can be distributed according to the traffic volume of each edge base, thereby avoiding congestion.
