[0017] FIG. 1 is a diagram illustrating a schematic configuration of a system according to an embodiment. As illustrated in FIG. 1 , the system 1 according to an embodiment may include a first electronic device 100 and a second electronic device 200. The first electronic device 100 according to an embodiment may be configured as, for example, a wireless communication device. [0018] 1, the first electronic device 100 may include P subarrays, for example, subarray #1 to subarray #P. Fig. 1 illustrates only some of the P subarrays, and does not illustrate the other subarrays.
[0019] As shown in Fig. 1, each of the subarrays #1 to #P may include N antenna elements. Fig. 1 illustrates only some of the antenna elements included in each subarray, and does not illustrate the other antenna elements. In Fig. 1, the subarrays and / or antenna elements are each illustrated schematically.
[0020] As shown in FIG. 1, the second electronic device 200 may include at least one antenna element.
[0021] 1 may show a configuration for performing calibration using a first electronic device 100 and a second electronic device 200. Furthermore, the first electronic device 100 and the second electronic device 200 may be connected wirelessly, thereby allowing various types of information to be transferred between the devices. In other words, the first electronic device 100 and the second electronic device 200 may be configured to be able to communicate with each other via wired and wireless connections.
[0022] 2 is a diagram showing a schematic configuration of the first electronic device 100 according to one embodiment. As described above, the first electronic device 100 may be configured as, for example, a wireless communication device.
[0023] As shown in FIG. 2 , the first electronic device 100 includes P subarrays, subarray #1 to subarray #P. Each of the subarrays #1 to #P includes N antenna elements. Subarray #1 may include N antenna elements 110 and N corresponding RF (Radio Frequency) units 120. Subarrays other than subarray #1 may also have the same configuration as subarray #1. In FIG. 2 , reference symbols are assigned to functional units primarily related to subarray #1, and reference symbols for functional units related to subarrays other than subarray #1 are omitted as appropriate.
[0024] 2, the first electronic device 100 may include an ADC / DAC 130, a selector 140, and a memory 150. The first electronic device 100 may include P ADC / DACs 130. The first electronic device 100 according to an embodiment may not include some of the functional units shown in FIG. 2, or may include functional units other than those shown in FIG. 2.
[0025] For example, the first electronic device 100 may include a control unit that controls each functional unit constituting the first electronic device 100. In this case, the control unit may include at least one processor, such as a central processing unit (CPU) or a digital signal processor (DSP), to provide control and processing capabilities for executing various functions. The control unit may be implemented as a single processor, several processors, or individual processors. The processor may be implemented as a single integrated circuit. An integrated circuit is also called an IC (integrated circuit). The processor may be implemented as multiple integrated circuits and discrete circuits connected to each other in a communicative manner. The processor may be implemented based on various other known technologies. Furthermore, the control unit may be configured to include at least one of software and hardware resources, for example. Furthermore, in one embodiment, the control unit may be configured by specific means in which software and hardware resources work together.
[0026] The control unit may be configured as, for example, a CPU or DSP and a program executed by the CPU or DSP. The program executed by the control unit and the results of the processing executed by the control unit may be stored in, for example, any memory. The control unit may include, as appropriate, memory necessary for the operation of the control unit.
[0027] As shown in FIG. 2, in each of subarrays #1 to #P, the N antenna elements 110 and the corresponding N RF sections 120 may be electrically connected to each other.
[0028] FIG. 3 is a diagram showing in more detail the functional configuration of one of the RF units 120 shown in FIG.
[0029] 3, the RF unit 120 may include a power amplifier (PA) 122, a low noise power amplifier (LNA) 124, a phase shifter 126, a switch 128A, and a switch 128B. The RF unit 120 according to one embodiment may not include some of the functional units shown in FIG. 3, or may include functional units other than those shown in FIG. 3.
[0030] The PA 122 amplifies the power of the transmission signal supplied from the phase shifter 126 based on, for example, information stored in the memory 150. The technology for amplifying the power of the transmission signal is already known, and therefore a detailed description thereof will be omitted.
[0031] The LNA 124 amplifies, with low noise, a received signal based on radio waves received by the antenna element 110, based on, for example, information stored in the memory 150. The LNA 124 may be a low noise amplifier, and amplifies, with low noise, the received signal supplied from the antenna element 110. The technology itself for amplifying a received signal with low noise is already known, so a detailed description thereof will be omitted.
[0032] The phase shifter 126 controls the phase of the signal transmitted by the antenna element 110 and / or the signal received by the antenna element 110. Specifically, the phase shifter 126 may adjust the phase of the transmission signal or the reception signal by appropriately advancing or delaying the phase of the transmission signal or the reception signal based on information stored in the memory 150 or the like. By the multiple phase shifters 126 appropriately adjusting the phase of each transmission signal or reception signal, the radio waves transmitted or received from the multiple antenna elements 110 constructively interact with each other in a predetermined direction to form a beam (beamforming).
[0033] The phase shifter 126 applies phase rotation to the signal. The precision of the phase rotation amount of the phase shifter is expressed by the number of bits. For example, in the case of 2 bits, the signal can be rotated by {0, 90, 180, 360 degrees}.
[0034] The switches 128A and 128B are each capable of switching between a plurality of electrical connections.
[0035] 3 , the antenna element 110 may be electrically connected to the RF unit 120. The antenna element 110 may be electrically connected to the PA 122 or the LNA 124 via a switch 128A. That is, by switching the switch 128A, the antenna element 110 is selectively connected to the PA 122 or the LNA 124.
[0036] The PA 122 may be electrically connected to the phase shifter 126. The LNA 124 may also be electrically connected to the phase shifter 126. As shown in FIG. 3, the PA 122 and the LNA 124 may be connected to their corresponding phase shifters 126. Also, as shown in FIG. 3, the phase shifter 126 connected to the PA 122 and the phase shifter 126 connected to the LNA 124 may be electrically connected to the ADC / DAC 130 ( FIG. 2 ) via a switch 128B. That is, by switching the switch 128B, the ADC / DAC 130 is selectively connected to the phase shifter 126 connected to the PA 122 or the phase shifter 126 connected to the LNA 124.
[0037] In the RF section 120, switching between switch 128A and switch 128B can switch between reception and transmission of the antenna element 110. As shown in Fig. 3 , when transmitting radio waves from the antenna element 110, the signal is transmitted via the PA 122. On the other hand, when receiving radio waves from the antenna element 110, the signal is received via the LNA 124.
[0038] 2 , the N RF units 120 included in each of the subarrays #1 to #P may be electrically connected to the corresponding ADC / DAC 130. Furthermore, the P ADC / DACs 130 corresponding to each of the subarrays #1 to #P may be electrically connected to the selector 140.
[0039] The ADC / DAC 130 may have the functions of an ADC (Analog to Digital Converter) and a DAC (Digital to Analog Converter). The ADC / DAC 130 may function as a DAC when transmitting radio waves from the antenna element 110, and may function as an ADC when receiving radio waves from the antenna element 110.
[0040] The selector 140 selects which subarray from subarray #1 to subarray #P to transmit or receive the calibration signal through. Therefore, the selector 140 may select to transmit or receive the signal through one of the ADC / DACs 130 connected to each of the P subarrays from subarray #1 to subarray #P. As shown in FIG. 2 , the selector 140 can exchange various information with the second electronic device 200.
[0041] The memory 150 may have a function of storing various types of information. The memory 150 may be configured, for example, by a semiconductor memory or the like, but is not limited to this and may be any storage device. The memory 150 may also be an internal memory of a CPU or DSP used as a controller.
[0042] In one embodiment, the memory 150 may store an analog weight matrix and / or a calibration correction value. The memory 150 may store information transmitted from the second electronic device 200 as the analog weight matrix and / or the calibration correction value. As shown in FIG. 2 , the memory 150 may receive various information from the second electronic device 200. The information stored in the memory 150 may be used by a module of the first electronic device 100 at an appropriate time.
[0043] Here, the analog weight matrix may be expressed by a phase rotation amount applicable to the phase shifter 126. When calibrating the first electronic device 100, the vectors of the analog weight matrix are sequentially set in the phase shifter 126. Furthermore, the calibration correction values may include a correction value for increasing or decreasing the power for the PA 122 and / or the LNA 124, and a correction value for rotating the phase for the phase shifter 126.
[0044] The analog weight matrices and / or calibration correction values stored in the memory 150 are applied to the N RF units 120 included in each of the P subarrays, subarray #1 to subarray #P. For this reason, the memory 150 may be electrically connected to the N RF units 120 included in each of the P subarrays, subarray #1 to subarray #P.
[0045] In this way, the first electronic device 100 according to one embodiment may include an antenna array (sub-array) including N antenna elements 110. The first electronic device 100 may also include an RF unit 120 connected to each of the antenna elements 110 and adjusting at least one of the amplitude and phase of radio waves transmitted and / or received by the antenna array (sub-array).
[0046] 4 is a diagram showing a schematic configuration of the second electronic device 200 according to an embodiment. As described above, the second electronic device 200 may be configured as, for example, a calibration terminal.
[0047] As shown in Fig. 4, the second electronic device 200 may include an antenna element 210, an RF unit 220, and an ADC / DAC 230. The second electronic device 200 may also include a transmission signal memory 252, a reception signal memory 254, a matrix memory 256, and a correction value memory 258. The second electronic device 200 may also include a signal correlator 262 and an analog weight correlator 264. The second electronic device 200 according to an embodiment may not include some of the functional units shown in Fig. 4, or may include functional units other than those shown in Fig. 4.
[0048] As shown in FIG. 4, the antenna element 210 and the RF section 220 may be electrically connected.
[0049] FIG. 5 is a diagram showing in more detail the functional configuration of RF unit 220 shown in FIG.
[0050] 5, the RF unit 220 may include a power amplifier (PA) 222, a low noise power amplifier (LNA) 224, a switch 228A, and a switch 228B. The RF unit 220 according to one embodiment may not include some of the functional units shown in FIG. 5, or may include functional units other than those shown in FIG. 5.
[0051] The PA 222 amplifies the power of the transmission signal transmitted from the antenna element 210. The technology for amplifying the power of the transmission signal is already known, and therefore a detailed description thereof will be omitted.
[0052] The LNA 224 amplifies, with low noise, the received signal based on the radio waves received by the antenna element 210. The LNA 224 may be a low noise amplifier, and amplifies, with low noise, the received signal supplied from the antenna element 110. The technology itself for amplifying the received signal with low noise is already known, so a detailed description thereof will be omitted.
[0053] Each of the switches 228A and 228B can switch between multiple electrical connections.
[0054] 5 , the antenna element 210 and the RF unit 220 may be electrically connected. The antenna element 210 may be electrically connected to the PA 222 or the LNA 224 via a switch 228A. That is, by switching the switch 228A, the antenna element 210 is selectively connected to the PA 222 or the LNA 224.
[0055] The PA 222 may be electrically connected to the ADC / DAC 230. The LNA 224 may also be electrically connected to the ADC / DAC 230. As shown in Figures 4 and 5, the PA 222 and the LNA 224 may be connected to the ADC / DAC 230. Also, as shown in Figure 5, the PA 222 and the LNA 224 may be electrically connected to the ADC / DAC 230 (Figure 4) via a switch 228B. That is, by switching the switch 228B, the ADC / DAC 230 is selectively connected to the PA 222 or the LNA 224.
[0056] In the RF section 220, switching between the switch 228A and the switch 228B can switch between reception and transmission of the antenna element 210. As shown in Fig. 5 , when transmitting radio waves from the antenna element 210, the signal is transmitted via the PA 222. On the other hand, when receiving radio waves from the antenna element 210, the signal is received via the LNA 224.
[0057] The ADC / DAC 230 may have the functions of an ADC (Analog to Digital Converter) and a DAC (Digital to Analog Converter). The ADC / DAC 230 may function as a DAC when transmitting radio waves from the antenna element 210, and may function as an ADC when receiving radio waves from the antenna element 210. As with the first electronic device shown in Figures 2 and 3, the second electronic device 200 shown in Figures 4 and 5 may also switch the functions of the PA 222 or the LNA 224, and the DAC or ADC in the ADC / DAC 230 depending on whether radio waves are being transmitted or received.
[0058] The transmission signal memory 252, the reception signal memory 254, the matrix memory 256, and the correction value memory 258 may each have a function of storing various types of information. The transmission signal memory 252, the reception signal memory 254, the matrix memory 256, and the correction value memory 258 may each be configured using, for example, a semiconductor memory, but are not limited to this and may be any storage device. The reception signal memory 254, the matrix memory 256, and the correction value memory 258 may also be internal memories of a CPU or DSP used as a controller.
[0059] 4 , the ADC / DAC 230 may also be electrically connected to a transmission signal memory 252. The ADC / DAC 230 may operate based on information (e.g., information about the transmission signal) supplied from the transmission signal memory 252. The transmission signal memory 252 can transmit various types of information (e.g., information about the transmission signal) to the first electronic device 100.
[0060] The transmission signal memory 252 may store information on a known transmission signal vector S of length M that is prepared in advance. When the first electronic device 100 calibrates its radio wave reception operation, the known transmission signal vector S is transmitted K times consecutively from the second electronic device 200 to the first electronic device 100 via wireless communication. When the first electronic device 100 calibrates its radio wave transmission operation, the known transmission signal vector S is transmitted from the second electronic device 200 to the first electronic device 100 via a cable, and then transmitted K times consecutively from the first electronic device 100 via wireless communication. Each time the known transmission signal vector S of length M is transmitted, the analog weights Wk applied to the phase shifter 126 of the first electronic device 100 are used in order, starting from the column vector of length N of a prepared analog weight matrix W. The analog weight matrix W will be described in more detail below.
[0061] 4 , the ADC / DAC 230 is electrically connected to a received signal memory 254, thereby being able to supply various information (e.g., information about the received signal) to the received signal memory 254. The received signal memory 254 is also electrically connected to the first electronic device 100, and may store information (e.g., information about the received signal) supplied from the first electronic device 100. The received signal memory 254 is electrically connected to a signal correlator 262, thereby being able to transmit various information (e.g., information about the received signal) to the signal correlator 262.
[0062] The received signal memory 254 may store the received signal vector Rk received by the second electronic device 200. The received signal memory 254 may also store the received signal vector Rk that is received by the first electronic device 100 via wireless communication and then received by the second electronic device 200 via a cable.
[0063] The signal correlator 262 and the analog weight correlator 264 may include at least one processor, such as a CPU or DSP, to provide control and processing capabilities for performing various functions. The signal correlator 262 and the analog weight correlator 264 may each be configured with a separate CPU or DSP, or may be configured together with a single CPU or DSP. These functional units may be implemented together with a single processor, with several processors, or with individual processors. The processor may be implemented as a single integrated circuit. An integrated circuit is also called an IC (Integrated Circuit). The processor may be implemented as multiple integrated circuits and discrete circuits connected to each other in a communicative manner. The processor may also be implemented based on various other known technologies. The signal correlator 262 and the analog weight correlator 264 may be configured with at least one of software and hardware resources, for example. In one embodiment, the signal correlator 262 and the analog weight correlator 264 may be configured by specific means in which software and hardware resources work together.
[0064] Furthermore, the signal correlator 262 and the analog weight correlator 264 may be configured as, for example, a CPU or a DSP and a program executed by the CPU or DSP. The programs executed in the signal correlator 262 and the analog weight correlator 264, and the results of processing executed in these functional units, may be stored in, for example, any memory. The signal correlator 262 and the analog weight correlator 264 may include memories necessary for the operation of these functional units, as appropriate.
[0065] The signal correlator 262 may be electrically connected to the transmit signal memory 252 and the receive signal memory 254. The signal correlator 262 can receive various information (e.g., information on the transmit signal) transmitted from the transmit signal memory 252. The signal correlator 262 can also receive various information (e.g., information on the receive signal) transmitted from the receive signal memory 254.
[0066] Hereinafter, the antenna error when transmitting or receiving radio waves by the first electronic device 100 is represented by a vector of length N, which is referred to as error vector E. In this case, the above-mentioned received signal vector Rk can be expressed as the following equation (1) or equation (2) using the above-mentioned known transmitted signal vector S and analog weight Wk: Rk=EWkS (1) Rk=WkES (2)
[0067] In the system 1 according to an embodiment, for example, the second electronic device 200 serving as a calibration terminal can obtain this error vector E.
[0068] The signal correlator 262 obtains (calculates) the correlation Zk between the received signal vector Rk and the transmitted signal vector S as shown in the following equation (3): Zk=RkS H (3) In the above formula (3), H means conjugate transpose (the same applies to the following formulas).
[0069] Here, it is obvious that the transmission signal vector S satisfies the following equation (4): SS H =M (4) In the above equation (4), M represents the length of the transmission signal vector S.
[0070] Therefore, the system 1 according to one embodiment can remove the influence of the transmitted signal vector S from the received signal vector Rk. A vector of length K shown in the following equation (5), obtained by repeating K times while changing the analog weight Wk, is referred to as a correlated signal vector Z. In one embodiment, the signal correlator 262 may output the correlated signal vector Z obtained in this way. Z={Z1, Z2, ..., ZK} (5)
[0071] The signal correlator 262 may calculate a correlation based on information on the transmitted signal and information on the received signal, and supply the result to the analog weight correlator 264. For this reason, the signal correlator 262 and the analog weight correlator 264 may be electrically connected.
[0072] The analog weight matrix W described above is an N × K matrix, and each element can be expressed as either {±1, ±i}, where K is a power of two greater than or equal to N. The phase rotation due to the elements of the analog weight matrix W is expressed as 0, 90, 180, or 360°.
[0073] In one embodiment, the analog weight matrix W may be generated by repeating the Kronecker product of a Hadamard matrix or a 2×2 or 4×4 DFT matrix. In this way, the analog weight matrix W satisfies the above equation (2) and is expressed in a simple format with each element being {±1, ±i}.
[0074] The matrix memory 256 can store information about matrices, etc. The matrix memory 256 is electrically connected to the analog weight correlator 264 and the first electronic device 100, so that the stored information can be transmitted to the analog weight correlator 264 and the first electronic device 100.
[0075] The analog weight correlator 264 calculates the correlation of the analog weights based on information supplied from the signal correlator 262 and / or information supplied from the matrix memory 256. Information based on the results calculated by the analog weight correlator 264 may be supplied to the correction value memory 258.
[0076] In one embodiment, the analog weight correlator 264 applies the conjugate transpose of the analog weight matrix W to the correlation signal vector Z. The analog weight matrix W is pre-designed to satisfy the following equation (6): H =KI (6) In the above formula (6), K represents a value of N or a power of two, and I is a unit matrix.
[0077] Therefore, according to the system 1 according to one embodiment, the influence of the analog weight matrix W can be removed from the correlation signal vector Z as shown in the following equation (7): E=ZW H / (MK) (7) In the above equation (7), M represents the length of the known transmitted signal vector S, and K represents a value of N or greater that is a power of two.
[0078] The output of the analog weight correlator 264 is a complex vector of length N that represents the error of the antennas that transmit and receive in the subarrays included in the first electronic device 100. In the system 1 according to one embodiment, the conjugate transpose of this complex vector may be used as a calibration correction value.
[0079] The second electronic device 200 may first store the calibration correction values obtained as described above in the correction value memory 258 of the second electronic device 200. Thereafter, the second electronic device 200 may transmit the correction values to the first electronic device 100 via a cable. Then, the first electronic device 100 may store the received correction values in the memory 150 of the first electronic device 100.
[0080] The correction value memory 258 can store information based on the results calculated by the analog weight correlator 264. The correction value memory 258 is electrically connected to the first electronic device 100, so that the stored information (e.g., information on correction values) can be transmitted to the first electronic device 100.
[0081] Next, the operation of the system 1 according to the embodiment will be described.
[0082] Fig. 6 is a flowchart illustrating the operation of the system 1 according to an embodiment. The flowchart shown in Fig. 6 may be used to explain the operation of the system 1 according to an embodiment when performing transmission or reception calibration. That is, the system 1 according to an embodiment may perform transmission-side calibration or reception-side calibration according to the operation shown in Fig. 6.
[0083] As shown in FIG. 6, when transmission or reception calibration is started, the system 1 sets p=1 and k=1 as initial values (step S11) and starts calibration of the p-th subarray of the first electronic device 100 (step S12).
[0084] Next, the k-th analog weight Wk is set in the phase shifter 126 of the first electronic device 100 (step S13).
[0085] Next, the first electronic device 100 thus set transmits a known signal of length M (step S14).
[0086] Next, the signal of length M transmitted from the first electronic device 100 is received by the second electronic device 200 (step S15).
[0087] Next, the signal correlator 262 of the second electronic device 200 finds the correlation between the transmitted signal and the received signal (step S16).
[0088] Next, the system 1 determines whether k has reached the specified value K (step S17). If k has not reached the specified value K in step S17, the system 1 adds 1 to k (step S18) and returns to step S13 to repeat the operation. If k has reached the specified value K in step S17, the system 1 performs the process of step S19.
[0089] In step S19, the system 1 (second electronic device 200) applies the conjugate transpose of the analog weight matrix W to the correlation signal vector Z of length K to obtain an error vector E. Also, in step S19, the system 1 (second electronic device 200) obtains a correction value from the obtained error vector E. This correction value may be applied to, for example, the RF unit 120 (PA 122, LNA 124, and / or phase shifter 126) of the first electronic device 100.
[0090] Next, the system 1 determines whether p has reached the specified value P (step S20). If p has not reached the specified value P in step S20, the system 1 adds 1 to p (step S21) and returns to step S12 to repeat the operation. If p has reached the specified value P in step S20, the system 1 may end the operation shown in FIG. 6.
[0091] The operation shown in FIG. 6 may be repeated as appropriate.
[0092] As described above, according to the system 1 of one embodiment, it is possible to compact the memory that stores the analog weight matrix W. Furthermore, according to the system 1 of one embodiment, the analog weight matrix W is not affected by the bit precision of the phase shifter. Furthermore, according to the system 1 of one embodiment, it is possible to simplify the calculations in the analog weight correlator 264. Therefore, according to the system 1 of one embodiment, it is possible to perform calibration with high precision while reducing processing costs.
[0093] As described above, the first electronic device 100 according to an embodiment may include P subarrays. Each subarray may include N antenna elements. The transmission signal vector S may be an orthogonal signal sequence (e.g., a Zadoff-Chu sequence) of length P. The first electronic device 100 according to an embodiment may transmit or receive a signal N times in succession while changing the analog weight.
[0094] According to the system 1 of one embodiment, by controlling the phase shifter 126 connected to the antenna element 110, the analog weight Wk can be switched and the first electronic device 100 can perform calibration of the analog BF.
[0095] The analog weight Wk is selected from an analog weight matrix W, which is a set of K (K is a power of 2 or greater) analog weights that are preset.
[0096] The analog weight matrix W may be, for example, an N×K matrix obtained by extracting N rows from a matrix created by the Kronecker product of a Hadamard matrix or 2×2 or 4×4 DFT (discrete Fourier transform) matrix. In the analog weight matrix W, each element is expressed as a combination of {±1, ±i}. The analog weight matrix W is orthogonal, and the W H =KI (H stands for conjugate transpose).
[0097] In the system 1 according to one embodiment, a signal transmitted K times from the first electronic device 100 may be received K times by the second electronic device 200 while the analog weight is switched K times in sequence via a specific subarray in the first electronic device 100. Also, in the system 1 according to one embodiment, a signal transmitted K times from the second electronic device 200 may be received K times by the first electronic device 100 while the analog weight is switched K times in sequence via a specific subarray in the first electronic device 100.
[0098] The system 1 according to one embodiment applies the conjugate transpose of an N×K matrix (analog weight matrix W) consisting of a set of analog weights to K signals received by the second electronic device 200 or the first electronic device 100. In this manner, the system 1 according to one embodiment can determine the amplitude and / or phase errors of the N antenna elements and correct the errors. By performing such correction for each subarray in the first electronic device 100, the system 1 according to one embodiment can determine the amplitude and / or phase errors of the N×P antenna elements and perform antenna calibration.
[0099] As described above, the second electronic device 200 according to an embodiment may include a signal correlator 262 and an analog weight correlator 264. The signal correlator 262 may determine the correlation (correlation signal vector Z) between a transmission signal transmitted to the first electronic device 100 and a reception signal wirelessly received by the first electronic device 100. The signal correlator 262 may also determine the correlation (correlation signal vector Z) between a transmission signal transmitted to the first electronic device 100 via a wired line and a reception signal wirelessly received by the second electronic device 200. The analog weight correlator 264 applies the conjugate transpose (W H ) to calculate a correction value for the antenna error in the antenna array (subarray). Based on the correction value for the antenna error calculated in this manner, the RF unit 120 of the first electronic device 100 may adjust at least one of the amplitude and phase of the radio waves when performing beamforming for at least one of transmission and reception using the antenna array (subarray). Here, the analog weight matrix W may be a matrix with N rows and K columns (K is a power of 2 greater than or equal to N), and each element of the analog weight matrix W may be either ±1 or ±i.
[0100] In one embodiment, the N analog weight matrices W may be orthogonal to one another. The analog weight matrix W may be an N-row, K-column matrix obtained by extracting N rows from a Hadamard matrix or a matrix formed by the Kronecker product of 2×2 or 4×4 discrete Fourier transform (DFT) matrices.
[0101] The technical effects of the system 1 according to one embodiment will be further described below.
[0102] Generally, the amplitude and / or phase error for each antenna element can be determined by applying an analog weight matrix to the received signal of a wireless communication device. Here, if the elements of the analog weight matrix cannot be expressed as a combination of ±1 or ±i, a multiplier is required to apply the analog weight matrix. This type of processing tends to require relatively high computational costs.
[0103] In the system 1 according to one embodiment, the analog weight matrix W is an N×K (K is a power of 2) orthogonal matrix, and the elements of the analog weight matrix W are {±1, ±i}. Therefore, the system 1 according to one embodiment can realize the functions of K received signals for calculating correction values and the conjugate transpose of the analog weight matrix W using only an adder. Therefore, the system 1 according to one embodiment can reduce calculation costs.
[0104] Furthermore, the precision of a functional unit such as the phase shifter 126 is generally expressed in bits. For example, in the case of 2 bits, a phase rotation can be expressed in units of 360 / 4 = 90°. In the case of 3 bits, a phase rotation can be expressed in units of 360 / 8 = 45°. In other words, when a phase shifter with a representation precision of 2 bits is used, it is not possible to express analog weights with a precision greater than this. Furthermore, quantization errors are unavoidable for angles other than those obtained by dividing 360° by a power of 2. In such cases, the orthogonality of the analog weight matrix does not hold. Therefore, if the quantization error of the phase shifter 126 is not taken into consideration, this can cause degradation of calibration precision.
[0105] In one embodiment, the system 1 calculates the analog weight matrix W as an N×N orthogonal matrix (W H = NI), but rather, we use an N × K (K is a power of 2) orthogonal matrix (WW H =KI). Therefore, in the system 1 according to one embodiment, the elements of the analog weight matrix W are {±1, ±i}, and the phase shifter 126 can be expressed with a precision of 1 bit or 2 bits. Therefore, in the system 1 according to one embodiment, no quantization error occurs and the system is compatible with the bit precision.
