e EDN and consequently the EC, EHE or any individual edge application server. In some cases, it may be sufficient to support an application for user equipment just in a specific area, meaning that an application server or application servers providing (e.g., hosting) that application need to be only deployed at a single edge location (i.e. need only be deployed at a single EDN or a single edge cloud) . However, in order to provide low latency for an application across the entire communication network and user equipment in different locations covered by the communication network, the application servers providing the application may be located in multiple edge locations (i.e., EDNs, edge cloud computing systems) distributed across the communication network. This is applicable for mobile user equipment that may move between locations.The overall concept of locating the application servers or compute and storage resources at the edge of the communication network is called edge computing (EC) . Applications running on application servers are generally referred to as EC applications.The following will introduce some other concepts.Edge computing may ease the bandwidth pressure on a mobile backhaul (e.g., a transport network that connects a core network and a radio access network of a mobile network) which may be required to handle a relatively high number of relatively high-bandwidth-demanding UEs (e.g., UEs that may be running applications requiring a relatively high bandwidth) . The high bandwidth requirements for UEs may be eased on the mobile backhaul as high bandwidth traffic received from (or destined to) UEs are steered locally and not aggregated at a central cloud computing system.Edge computing may maintain local data generated locally and preserve privacy.Some mobile EC applications may off-load the processing-intensive and time sensitive task (s) from the UE onto an EAS without degrading user experience. This may reduce the UE cost. This may increase the UE battery autonomy.EC applications are often time sensitive applications such as e an XR (extended reality) , cloud gaming or industrial control applications but may alternatively or additionally be any other type of applications.XR is an umbrella term and may include at least the following types of reality:Augmented Reality (AR) where virtual objects are added to a real-world environment;Virtual Reality (VR) where visual and audio scenes are combined with a real-world location; andMixed Reality (MR) where haptics and interactions are added to a real-world environment.Other embodiments may be used with other example EC applications.Reference is made to Figure 1 which shows a user equipment (UE) 300 connected to an edge data network 101 via a mobile network 101. The edge data network 101 comprises a first edge application server 114, a second edge application server 116 and a third application server 118. It should be noted that although Figure 1 shows one edge data network, a UE may be connected to more than one edge data network via the mobile network 100. In the example shown, the edge data network is shown as having three edge application servers. This is by way of example only and an edge data network may have one or more edge application servers.A UE 300 is configured to communicate with an edge application server 114, 116 or 118 via the mobile network 100. The mobile network 100 includes one or more access networks 102 and 104 and a core network 106 connected to each of the one or more access networks. In the example shown in Figure 1, the access networks 102 and 104 are radio access networks (RAN) . In other embodiments, any other type of access network may be used. In the example shown in Figure 1, there are two RANs 102 and 104. The communication between the UE and a given one of the EASs will be via one of the RANs 102, 104 and one or more network (NW) functions of the core network 106. In Figure 1, the core network 106 includes a first network function 108. a second network function 110 and a third network function 112. However, it will be appreciated that core network 106 may include more than three network functions.In the example shown in Figure 1, a UE may receive a service from the first EAS 114, the second EAS 116, or the third EAS 118. The UE may receive a service from the first EAS 114 via the first RAN 102 and the first network function 108, from the second EAS 116 via the first RAN 102 and the second network function 110, or the third EAS 118 via second RAN 104 and the third network function 112. The network path between the UE and a respective one of the EASs have associated network related metrics.The network path is the path or the route taken by packets from the UE to the EAS through a communication network and from the EAS to the UE through the communication network.The network path taken by packets may change dynamically at least to some extent during an application communication session due to, e.g., updates to routing of internet protocol packets (generally referred to as IP routing updates) . The network path may have static points (nodes, network functions) that are explicitly set (by the network control plane) such as the network function in Figure 1. These static points divide the network path into different path segments. Each path segment is typically provided by one type of network technology (e.g., mobile access network and IP core network are separate segments) or one network provider.When a UE is connected to a mobile network (for example a 4G, 5G or 6G network) and communicates with an EAS at least two path segments exist:- The first path segment is between the UE and a network function. In 5G the network function would be a PDU (protocol data unit) session anchor user plane function (PSA-UPF) . The network function is part of the mobile core network and is under the control of the mobile network control plane and the mobile network operator.- The second path segment is between the network function and the EAS. This second path segment may be based on non-mobile network specific IP (internet protocol) networking technologies and may or may not be (fully) under the control of the mobile network operator.Each network path may have one or more metrics associated with it such as delay, delay variation, packet error rate and available capacity (bitrate) . The one or more metrics associated with a network path may be associated with communication of packets in one direction (e.g., one-way communication of packets from the UE to the EAS or vice versa via the network path) or with the communication of packets in both directions (round-trip communication of packets from the UE to the EAS and back to the UE or vice versa) .Depending on the agreed quality of service level for the UE, the metrics may be “guaranteed” (with a certain likelihood) or provided in a “best effort” manner.The metrics may be determined by the network control plane based on pre-configuration, keeping track of QoS fulfilment or reservations, and / or based on reports by the network nodes which may perform measurements or use specific protocols to obtain them.The network related metrics may be for a particular segment of the network path or of the entire network path (end-to-end) . In some embodiments, different network related metrics may be provided for different path segments. For example, first network related metrics may be provided for the first path segment between the UE and the respective NW function. Second network related metrics may be provided for the path segment between the respective NW function and the EAS. In some embodiments only first path segment related metrics may be available and used. In other embodiments just second network related metrics may be used. In some embodiments, both first and second network path segment related metrics may be used.It is possible to determine the metrics of the entire end-to-end network path based on the metrics of the different path segments. For instance, end-to-end delay of a network path of a network path may be determined by summing the delays of the individual path segments of the network path.In some embodiments, there may be alternate candidate network paths through the mobile network associated with one EAS. For example, there may be one network path associated with one RAN and another network path associated with another RAN. Alternatively or additionally, there may be one network path associated with one network function and another network path associated with a different network function.Some embodiments relate to the selection of which candidate EAS is to provide a service to the UE. Where there is more than one network path to a candidate EAS, some embodiments may relate to the selection of one of the network paths to the candidate EAS. In one embodiment the selection of one of the network paths (generally referred to herein as path selection) is made by selecting a network function. In a 5G mobile network selecting a network function consists of selecting a PDU Session Anchor UPF or a data network access identifier (DNAI) for the traffic flow between the UE and the EAS. The selection of a network path and the implementation of the selected network path (e.g., the setting up of the selected network path by configuring routing and / or switching rules in different network functions in the network path) may be performed by another network function. For example, in a 5G network, the selection of a network path may be enforced by a session management function (SMF) configuring the network path in the 5G network user plane (user plane functions) in relation to a PDU Session used by the UE for communication with the EAS.Figure 2 shows an overview of some embodiments for selecting one or more candidate application servers of Figure 1 to provide a service to the user equipment of Figure 1. Figure 2 shows some of the network functions involved in the selection of one or more candidate servers. The network functions shown in Figure 2 are generally control plane network functions. The network functions comprise a server selector function 120. The server selector function 120 may be provided within the mobile network 100 and / or outside the mobile network 100 and / or within the EDN of Figure 1.The UE 300 makes a request for a service to be provided by an EAS of Figure 1. The request is provided to a server discovery function 126. The server discovery function may be within the mobile network 100 and / or outside the mobile network 100 and / or within the EDN of Figure 1. At least a part of the server discovery function may be provided by a network function.A UE may be allowed to discover the IP (internet protocol) address (es) or other information which identifies a suitable EAS (or suitable EASs) . A UE may discover the IP address (es) or other information which identifies a suitable EAS (or suitable EASs) by, for example, sending a query to a domain name system (DNS) which provides a response comprising IP address (es) or other information which identifies a suitable EAS (or suitable EASs) for EC. This is sometimes referred to as an EAS discovery procedure.An EAS re-discovery procedure may be provided. The EAS re-discovery may be triggered when the previously discovered EAS cannot be used or may not be the most appropriate EAS to use.In some embodiments, the UE sends a query to DNS which provides a response to the query. The DNS may be a hierarchical system where, for example, when 5G networking connects the UE to an EDN, the UE sends the query to a DNS resolver (e.g., an EASDF (edge application server discovery function) , and the resolver forwards the query to an authoritative DNS server.The server discovery function 126 provides an identifier of the UE (e.g., an IP address of the UE (UE IP address) or other information identifying the UE to the server selector function 120. The server selector function 120 provides the address of the selected EAS server to the server discovery function 126. The server discovery function 126 provides a response to the query of the UE with the address of the EAS. For example, in the case a 5G network connects a UE to an EDN, the server selector function 120 receives the identifier of the UE (UE ID) from an authoritative DNS server of the EDN. The server selector function 120 provides the EAS address to the authoritative DNS. The authoritative DNS server provides the EAS address (via the DNS resolver) back to the UE.In other embodiments, the server discovery function 126 may be provided by or hosted on an application server. One example of such an application server may be an edge enabler server (EES) as defined in the 3GPP TS 23.558 V18.0.2.The server selector function 120 is aware of the candidate EASs as a result of, for example, communicating with an edge server metric function or any other suitable edge server function, which in turn communicates, for example, with an EDN orchestrator of the EDN. The EDN orchestrator is responsible for the instantiation of EASs.The server selector function 120 requests network related metrics for each candidate EAS from a network related metrics function 122. The network related metrics function may be a network function. The network related metrics function 122 may be provided in the core network of Figure 1. The metrics may be requested for the end-to-end network path, or one or more segments of the network path. The network related metrics function 122 provides network related metrics for each candidate EAS to the server selector function 120. The server selector function 120 requests edge server metrics for each candidate EAS from the edge server metrics function 124. The edge server metrics function 124 provides edge server metrics for each candidate EAS to the server selector function 120. The edge server metrics function may be provided by an Edge Cloud or Edge Hosting Environment (EHE) in the EDN and / or provided by a computing system located outside the EDN of Figure 1.The network related metrics may comprise one or more of:delay; delay variance; packet error rate; capacity (capacity may, for example, be expressed in terms of bandwidth and / or bitrate) ; network path cost; energy-related metrics; level of reliability; and / or level of redundancy. The edge server metrics may comprise one or more of compute or computational related metrics and / or energy related metrics. The compute related metrics may comprise one or more of:EAS compute capabilities; EAS compute capacity; EAS compute cost; EAS processing delay; EAS individual compute load (compute load may for example be expressed as a percentage or a number of application sessions compared to full capacity) ; and / or EDN aggregated metrics (this includes aggregated level of metrics for some or all EASs in the EDN) .The energy related metrics may comprise one or more of:EAS energy consumption; and / or EAS energy cost; and / or EAS energy source greenness.The server selector function 120 determines which one of the candidate EAS is to provide the service to the UE. This is based on the edge server metrics and the network related metrics provided for each candidate EAS.The server selector function 120 provides information indicating the selected EAS to the server discovery function 126. This information may comprise the address of the selected EAS. Information on the selected EAS may be provided by the server discovery function 126 to the UE.It should be noted that where there is more than one path to a candidate EAS, network related metrics may be provided for each candidate path and the server selector function 120 may select which one of the candidate paths to the candidate EAS is to be used, if selected.Some embodiments may select more than one EAS. Some embodiments may select more than one path to an EAS.Some embodiments may be used in a 5G communication system. However, embodiments may be used in other systems as well as future systems (e.g., 6G system) .In the following, some example embodiments are provided at least in part by a 5G communication system.Figure 3 shows an overview of some embodiments. The mobile network 100 is a communication system operating based on a 5th generation radio access technology (generally referred to as a 5G system (5GS) ) and with which some embodiments may be implemented. The 5GS may comprise a (radio) access network (RAN) or more generally a 5G access network that may e.g., correspond to a (radio) access network (RAN) , to a wireline access gateway (W-AGF) , to a N3IWF (non 3GPP interworking function) , etc. In the example shown in Figure 3, the access network is a RAN. The 5G (R) AN may comprise one or more base stations or radio access network (RAN) nodes, such as a gNodeB (gNB) . A base station or RAN node may comprise one or more distributed units connected to a central unit. In other embodiments, the access network may be another access network.The 5GS may comprise a 5G core network (5GC) 106. The 5GC 106 may comprise a first UPF (user plane function) 108, a second UPF 110, and a third UPF 112. A UPF may be provided in the network path between the UE and an EAS. A DNAI (data network access identifier) is associated with each UPF. The DNAI is an identifier of a user plane access to one or more data networks (DN) where applications are deployed.In the example shown in Figure 3, a first EDN 101a and a second EDN 101b may be provided. This is by way of example only. In other embodiments there may be only one EDN or more than two EDNs. The first EDN 101a has a first EAS 114 and a second EAS 116. The second EDN 101b has a third EAS 118.Figure 4 shows a schematic representation of a communication system operating based on a 5th generation radio access technology in accordance with some embodiments. The UE 300 and a RAN 102 are shown.In some embodiments, the access network may alternatively or additionally comprise a wireline access gateway (W-AGF) or a N3IWF (non 3GPP interworking function) , etc.An I-UPF (intermediate UPF) 400 is provided. The I-UPF is provided between a PSA-UPF (packet data unit session anchor UPF) and the RAN 102. In this example the I-UPF is provided between a first PSA-UPF 108 and the RAN 102, a second PSA-UPF 110 and the RAN 102, and a third PSA-UPF 112 and the RAN 102. The PSA-UPFs of Figure 4 may be the UPFs shown, for example in Figure 3. The first PSA-UPF 108 is part of the network path between the first EAS 114 and the UE 300. The second PSA-UPF 110 is part of the network path between the second EAS 116 and the UE 300. The third PSA-UPF 108 is part of the network path between the third EAS 118 and the UE 300.A SMF 122 communicates with each of the PSA-UPFs and the I-UPF. The SMF acts as a network related metrics function (e.g., the SMF includes functionality of a network related metrics function in addition to other functionality related to session management) as will be discussed in more detail later.A server selector function (SSF) 120 is provided. The server selector function communicates with the SMF 122 via a NEF (network exposure function) 402.The server selector function 120 communicates with a DNS server 126a, for example an EASDF, and / or an authoritative domain DNS server (ADNS) 126b which provides a server discovery function.The server selector function 120 may communicate with an application server (AS) 126c which in some embodiments may be used as an alternative to the DNS look up provided by the DNS server 126a and / or the authoritative domain DNS server 126b. This may use a different technique to the DNS technique.In some embodiments, the selection of the EAS may depend on network related metrics and edge server metrics.The network related metrics and the edge server metrics may need to be retrieved from separate domains. For example, one domain in the mobile network domain (e.g., 5GS) and another domain is the edge data network.The mobile network domain, e.g., the 5GS is aware of the network related metrics in its domain. The edge data network or compute domain, e.g., the edge function (s) are responsible for the allocation of the compute resources. The edge data network may be aware of the network metrics in the edge data network.Embodiments provide a server selector function 120 that can obtain information from the 5GS about the network metrics for at least a part of the network path between a particular UE and a particular set of EAS instances.The server selector function 120 has the network metrics for each individual EAS instance and the edge server related metrics.The traffic flows for a UE may be served by one of two or more candidate PSA-UPFs. This means that there may be two or more potential network paths with different metrics between the UE and a particular EAS depending which PSA-UPF is used.The server selector function 120 may select a DNAI / EAS pair based on the multi-domain metrics.The server selector function 120 may be a CNC (compute and network convergence) function. The server selector function 120 may be a CFN (computing first networking) function. The server selector function may be a CAN / CATS (computer aware networks / computing aware traffic steering) function. The server selector function may be an integration of network and compute function.The server selector function 120 may be considered, at least in part, to be an application function. This allows for a separate server selector function 120 to be deployed by a different party than the 5GS provider, if required.Alternatively, the server selector function 120 may be considered to be a network function with an associated exposure interface which can be used by a third-party DNS or application servers to communicate with that server selector function 120.In some embodiments, the network path between the UE and the EAS is regarded as having or may be including two segments. The first segment of the network path may be between the UE and a network function, for example PSA-UPF, while the second segment may be between the network function, for example PSA-UPF, and the EAS.In some embodiments, metrics for only the first path segment may be used.In some embodiments, metrics for the end-to-end path from the UE may be used. In this example, the mobile network may have obtained the network metrics for the second path segment.In other embodiments, the network path may be considered as a single path. In other embodiments, the network path may be considered to be made up of more than two segments.In some embodiments, network metrics for only a part of the path may be used in the selection provided by the server selector function 120.In some embodiments, the server selector function may include information in a request as to the segment or segments for which the network related metrics are requested.The server selector function may include information in the request or a separate request on the direction of the metrics, for example, uplink, downlink and / or round-trip.The server selector function may include information in the request or a separate request on the one or more specific network metric types being requested (e.g., delay, delay variance, packet error rate, capacity, network path cost, energy-related metrics, level of reliability and / or redundancy) .The server selector function may request the network metrics from the network related metrics function, for example a SMF, based on trigger from third party entity or function.In one embodiment, the server selector function may request the network metrics based on external trigger from a DNS server or an application-layer traffic optimization (ALTO) client or another entity performing EAS resolutions / selection for a UE or an application client. The ALTO protocol provides an interface to expose network properties and metrics for applications to take optimized actions. An example use case is that an ALTO client can query routing cost from a source to multiple potential destinations (identified by their IP addresses or IP prefixes) to select the destination with lowest cost. Different types of cost metrics can be used.In one embodiment, the server selector function may request to be notified about changing / changed network metrics. The metrics may change for example due to UE mobility and / or for another reason. In one embodiment, the server selector function may determine one or more final UPF and / or target DNAI and the EAS based on the combination of one or more network metrics and one or more edge server metrics, for example one or more compute or computational related metrics and / or one or more energy related metrics. In one embodiment, if new or updated network metrics between a particular UE and candidate DNAI / UPF or UE and a particular EAS are received, the server selector function may update its decision about the selected EAS for the UE and may provide a notification of this change. This notification can be provided to the ADNS 126b or the application server 126c. The application server 126c may further notify the UE of this change. A EAS re-discovery procedure may be triggered by the SMF or by the application function. This may be, for example as specified in 3GPP TS 23.548, clause 6.2.3.3 V18.2.0.Reference is made to Figure 5 which shows some of the entities of Figure 4 in more detail along with parts of an EDN 101. The UE 300 may have an application client 502 for the service to be provided by one of the candidate EAS and a DNS stub resolver 500. The UE application client 502 provides a name resolution request to the DNS stub resolver 500. The DNS stub resolver 502 sends the DNS request message to a DNS resolver 508 of a EASDF 126a. The DNS resolver 508 sends a request which includes the UE IP address and / or other unique identifier of the UE (unique UE ID) to the authoritative DNS 126b. The EASDF may receive the UE IP address and / or other unique identifier of the UE from the UE or receive the UE ID from the SMF.The EASDF 126a and / or the authoritative DNS server 126b provide or include the server discovery function in this example.In this example, the server selector function 120 may be triggered to perform selection of one or more candidate servers by an event like a DNS query sent by the UE and received at the authoritative DNS Server.In other embodiments, the server selector function 120 may be triggered by another type of application specific request for application service instance selection to an application server (not shown in Figure 5 but shown in Figure 4 and referenced 126c) .In the example shown, a separate server selector function 120 is provided. In other embodiments, the DNS server or the application server may provide at least a part of the server selector function 120.One example protocol between the DNS Server or the application server and the server selector function is the IETF ALTO protocol.In order to be able to request UE specific network metrics from the 5GS, the server selector function should know the UE IP address or another UE ID such as a GPSI (generic public subscription identifier) or any other suitable identifier of the UE.As alternative to requesting exact UE specific metrics the server selector function can request metrics related to UE location. For this purpose, the server selector function only needs to know an identifier for the UE location such as an IP address or subnet indicating a topological location in the 5G network. The topological location may indicate a specific radio access network (RAN) Node or a specific intermediate user plane function (I-UPF) or any other node or identity that represent the UE location with any level of granularity.The server selector function 120 receives a request to select an EAS instance for a particular UE. The server selector function 120 knows the UE IP address and / or other unique ID for the UE and / or an identifier for the UE location, and the IP addresses representing the different EAS instances. The server selector function will receive the UE IP address and / or other unique identifier for the UE and / or an identifier of the UE location from the authoritative DNS in some embodiments,In some cases, such as when serving DNS queries, the server selector function 120 only needs to get the metrics information at the time of the query, while in other cases the server selector function 120 may need updates every time the metrics change, for example so that an application server can consider updating the EAS instance selection to the UE client.In another example, the server selector function 120 may subscribe to be continuously notified about changing / changed NW (network) metric (s) of the changing candidate DNAI / UPF. In this way the server selector function 120 may have fast access to the NW metric (s) for deciding a best pair of DNAI / UPF and EAS.In case of UE mobility, the server selector function 120 may instruct the 5GS to trigger the relocation of DNAI / EAS or instruct the ALTO procedure to re-configure respectively.Thus, the server selector function 120 may be triggered by an event such as a DNS query sent by the UE and received at the authoritative DNS Server (ADNS) or by another type of application specific request for an application service instance selection to an application server. The authoritative DNS server or the application server requests the server selector function 120 to perform a service instance selection based on network and compute metrics.One protocol that may be used between the authoritative DNS server or the application server and the server selector function 120 is the IETF ALTO protocol.Based on the UE IP address or the unique UE identifier or an identifier for the UE location and the candidate EAS IP addresses, the server selector function 120 may request a list of potential user plane paths and their associated network metrics from the 5GS network. In the example shown in Figure 5, this request is provided to the SMF 122 via the NEF 402.Since in some cases the server selector function 120 needs the knowledge of the UE IP address to request UE specific metrics, if the DNS queries for the UE are performed via the EASDF, the SMF may be configured to instruct the EASDF 126a to populate the (extension for DNS client subnet) ECS option with the UE IP address for specific domains.In other cases where the server selector function 120 only needs the knowledge of an identifier for the UE location to request UE location specific metrics, if the DNS queries for the UE are performed via the EASDF, the SMF may be configured to instruct the EASDF 126a to populate the (extension for DNS client subnet) ECS option with an IP address or IP prefix that indicate a specific topological location of the UE for specific domains. The IP address or prefix may indicate a specific RAN node, a specific intermediate UPF or any other node or identifier representing the UE location.The EAS metrics are provided to the server selector function 120 by a EAS metrics function 124 of the EDN 101.The server selector function 120 is able to determine which EAS and DNAI pairs are sufficient to meet the application requirements and also determine their order of preference. This is based on the 5GS response received from the SMF with the candidate EAS and DNAI pairs and the associated network metrics. Alternatively or additionally, this is based on the compute metrics associates with the EAS / service instances. Alternatively or additionally, this is based on the application specific QoS (quality of service) requirements.The server selector function 120 provides a list of EAS IP addresses in a precedence order back to the authoritative DNS Server or application server.The authoritative DNS server 126b uses the ordered list of IP addresses of EAS to create DNS response sent to the UE. This may be via the DNS resolver 508 of the EASDF 126a.Similarly, the application server uses its application specific methods to provide the UE client 502 with the EAS IP address.When the EAS has been selected, a network path between the application client 502 and the application service instance 506 of the EAS 114 is established via the respective UPF 108 to the EDN. In this example, this is via a user plane.Reference is made to Figure 6 which shows a procedure of some embodiments. It should be noted that the block referenced 600 of Figure 6 are the server discovery function 126 and the server selector function 120 previously discussed.At 1, the UE requests an EAS address for a particular application. The EAS address may be an IP address, and / or URL (uniform resource locator) .The UE may for example send a DNS query. In case of a DNS query, the UE itself or the EASDF adds the UE IP address or an IP address or IP prefix indicating the UE location in the EDNS (extension for DNS) Client Subnet (ECS) option.Alternatively, the UE may use an application specific mechanism.The authoritative DNS server or the application server has the IP address of the UE.The authoritative DNS server or the application server may itself provide at least a part of the server selector function 120 or there may be a separate server selector function 120. The server selector function 120 will be provided with the candidate EAS IP addresses.The server selector function 120 may thus be triggered by the authoritative DNS server or other application server to perform the EAS address resolution or selection for a UE application client.The UE may send a query to the DNS resolver, that is the EASDF. The EASDF forwards the query to the authoritative DNS server.The authoritative DNS server provides the UE IP address or other UE identifier or UE location to the server selector function 120.The server selector function 120 is aware of the candidates EASs as discussed previously. At 2, the server selector function 120 requests the network metrics.In some embodiments, the server selector function 120 requests one of the following:i. one or more network metrics for the path segment between the UE or UE location and each candidate PSA-UPF and / or a data network identified by DNAI. To request one or more network metrics for these, the server selector function 120 may send a request for one or more network metrics that comprises one or more of the metric scope for the network metric, direction and / or type of network metric. An illustrative example is, “DNAI: [ “DL: delay, UL: delay] ” where “DNAI” identifies the scope or the type of the path segment the metrics are requested for and “DL: delay” and “UL: delay” indicate that the metrics of interest are the delay in the downlink and uplink direction, respectively. The server selector function 120 may also include in the request the UE IP address or the UE ID or an IP address or IP prefix indicating the UE location or another type of UE location identifier.ii. one or more network metrics for the end-to-end network paths between the UE and each candidate EAS IP address via each candidate PSA-UPF. To request one or more network metrics for the end-to-end network paths between the UE and each EAS IP address via each candidate PSA-UPF, the server selector function 120 may send a request for one or more network metrics that comprise one or more of the metric scope for the network metric, direction and / or type of network metric. An illustrative example of a network metric is end-to-end round trip delay for the network path. The server selector function 120 may include in the request the UE IP address or the UE ID or an IP address or IP prefix indicating the UE location or another type of UE location identifier. The server selector function 120 may include one or more candidate EAS IP addresses in the request.iii. one or more network metrics for the path segment between each candidate PSA-UPF and each candidate EAS IP address. To request one or more network metrics for these, the server selector function 120 may send a request for one or more network metrics that comprises one or more of the metric scope for the network metric, direction and / or type of network metric. An illustrative example is, “N6” : [ “DL: delay, UL: delay] ” where “N6” identifies the scope or the type of the path segment the metrics are requested for, and “DL: delay” and “UL: delay” indicate that the metrics of interest are the delay in the downlink and uplink direction, respectively. N6 is the interface between the EDN and the UPF The server selector function 120 may also include in the request the UE IP address or the UE ID or an IP address or IP prefix indicating the UE location or another type of UE location identifier.In summary, the server selector function request is augmented with one or more of:metric scope: for example “DNAI” or “E2E” or “N6” ;metric direction: “UL” (uplink) , “DL” (downlink) , “RT” (round-trip) ;metric type: “delay” , “delay-variance” , “capacity” , “reliability-index” and / or the etc.; and / orEAS IP addresses, for example where the requested metric scope is “E2E” .UE IP address or UE ID or IP address or IP prefix indication the UE location or another type of UE location identifier.The server selector function 120 may request from the 5GS, e.g. the SMF, a list of network metrics as discussed previously.At 3, the SMF responds with the network metrics.At 3a and 3b, the SMF may respond via the NEF or at 3c, the SMF may respond directly.The server selector function 120 may receive from the 5GS, e.g., SMF, the list of network metrics between a single UE or UE location and a set of candidate DNAI / UPF or a set of EASs.Where the network metrics for the path segment between the UE and each candidate PSA-UPF / DNAI were requested, the response includes the requested metrics associated with each candidate DNAI available for the UE. An illustrative example where, for example, there are three candidate DNAIs is as follows:DNAI [name=” UPF-1” , IP= “IP addr-1” ] : [DL-one-way-delay=5 ms, UL-one-way-delay=5 ms]DNAI [name=” UPF-2” , IP= “IP addr-2” ] : [DL-one-way-delay=10 ms, UL-one-way-delay=10 ms]DNAI [name=” UPF-3” , IP= “IP addr-3” ] : [DL-one-way-delay=20 ms, UL-one-way-delay=20 ms]Where the network metrics for the end-to-end network paths between the UE and each EAS IP address via each candidate PSA-UPF were requested, the response includes the requested metrics associated with each candidate EAS IP address using a path via each candidate DNAI. An illustrative example where, for example, there are two candidate EASs and two candidate DNAIs:EAS [IP=” IP addr-A” ] :Via DNAI [name=” UPF-1” , IP= “IP addr-1” ] : [RTT-delay= 10ms]Via DNAI [name=” UPF-2” , IP= “IP addr-2” ] : [RTT-delay= 20ms]EAS [IP=” IP addr-B” ] :Via DNAI [name=” UPF-1” , IP= “IP addr-1” ] : [RTT-delay= 30ms]Via DNAI [name=” UPF-2” , IP= “IP addr-2” ] : [RTT-delay= 20ms]Alternatively, the UE-DNAI and DNAI-EAS network segments may be reported separately:DNAI [name=” UPF-1” , IP= “IP addr-1” ] : [DL-one-way-delay=5 ms, UL-one-way-delay=5 ms]DNAI [name=” UPF-2” , IP= “IP addr-2” ] : [DL-one-way-delay=10 ms, UL-one-way-delay=10 ms]EAS [IP=” IP addr-A” ] :From DNAI [name=” UPF-1” , IP= “IP addr-1” ] : [RTT-delay= 5ms]From DNAI [name=” UPF-2” , IP= “IP addr-2” ] : [RTT-delay= 10ms]EAS [IP=” IP addr-B” ] :From DNAI [name=” UPF-1” , IP= “IP addr-1” ] : [RTT-delay= 25ms]From DNAI [name=” UPF-2” , IP= “IP addr-2” ] : [RTT-delay= 10ms]Where the network metrics for the path segment between the candidate PSA-UPFs / DNAIs and candidate EAS’s were requested, the response includes the requested metrics associated with each PSA-UPF / DNAI and EAS pair. An illustrative example where, for example, there are two candidate EASs and two candidate DNAIs:EAS [IP=” IP addr-A” ] :From DNAI [name=” UPF-1” , IP= “IP addr-1” ] : [RTT-delay= 5ms]From DNAI [name=” UPF-2” , IP= “IP addr-2” ] : [RTT-delay= 10ms]EAS [IP=” IP addr-B” ] :From DNAI [name=” UPF-1” , IP= “IP addr-1” ] : [RTT-delay= 25ms]From DNAI [name=” UPF-2” , IP= “IP addr-2” ] : [RTT-delay= 10ms]As referenced 4, the server selector function 120 has obtained the network metrics from the 5GS. The server selector function 120 additionally has been able to collect the metrics associated with each candidate edge server (generally referred to as edge server metrics) such as the compute metrics relevant for each candidate EAS. In some embodiments, the server selector function 120, may be able to separately collect from the EDN, the network metrics for the path segment between the PSA-UPFs and the EAS.Based on the information the server selector function 120 has received, the server selector function 120 can determine an EAS for the UE.The server selector function 120 may calculate or compute the ranking of the DNAI / UPF and EAS pairs (e.g., the ranking of candidate EASs together with related candidate network paths) based on both the network metrics related to the candidate network paths provided by the 5GS and EAS related metrics, such as compute metrics for each candidate EAS.At 5, the selected EAS address (es) (e.g., IP address (es) , URL (s) , and / or the like) is provided to the UE. The selected EAS address (es) may be provided to the UE in a DNS response or in an application specific message. The server selector function 120 may return a list of EAS IP addresses in a precedence order according to the ranking to authoritative DNS server or other application server.At 6, the server selector function 120 may indicates the selected DNAI (s) and EAS IP address (es) to the 5GS, e.g., SMF via the NEF, so that the SMF can update the I-UPF (s) UL CL (uplink classifier) rules so that the traffic flows between the UE and the EAS IP address (es) get forwarded via the selected DNAI (s) .If the server selector function 120 indicates multiple DNAIs and / or EASs have been selected and provided to the UE for example for redundancy purposes, the SMF needs to at least initially configure traffic steering for multiple DNAIs and / or UPFs and EAS IP addresses in parallel.When the EAS IP address is provided to the UE by DNS response, the 3GPP EASDF is able to see the EAS IP address, if the server selector function 120 requested the EASDF based discovery of EAS (for DNS) .The current DNS standards do not allow the DNS server to insert a different DNS ECS option than which was included in the query. However, in one modification to the current DNS standard, the ECS option in the response may indicate the selected DNAI (s) and EAS IP address (es) to the 5GS. This would remove the need for the part of the procedure at 6 in Figure 6When the SMF reports metrics related to a particular PSA-UPF and / or DNAI to the server selector function120, the SMF provides an IP address or IP prefix of the PSA-UPF  / or DNAI that is usable as an ECS option in a DNS response. For this purpose, ECS and ECS-prefix-length parameters may be provided, for example:DNAI [name=” UPF-1” , IP= “IP addr-1” , ECS=” IP addr-1” , ECS-prefix-length=” 24” ] : [DL-one-way-delay=5 ms, UL-one-way-delay=5 ms]ECS and ECS-prefix-length parameters is further provided by the server selector function 120 to the authoritative DNS server. When the authoritative DNS server responds to DNS query from the UE, the authoritative DNS uses this ECS and ECS-prefix-length to form the ECS option value in the DNS response. Alternatively, a different DNS option can be used to carry this information. When the EASDF reports to the SMF that the DNS response contains this value, the EASDF indicates to the SMF the PSA-UPF / DNAI selected by the service selector function 120.Additionally, or alternatively the server selector function 120 may request to be continuously notified about the changes of the network metrics allowing the server selector function 120 to re-select the pair of DNAI and / or EAS. According to existing DNS / EASDF procedures the change of EAS will lead to instructing the UE via PCO (Protocol configuration Options) during PDU session modification procedure to send a new DNS query for EAS discovery. Non-DNS based application protocols may provide an alternative mechanism for the application server to provide the UE application client with a new EAS address.The SMF may instruct the EASDF to build the ECS option populated with UE IP address In this case, at 1 of Figure 6, the UE sends a DNS query which reaches the EASDF. The EASDF reports the DNS query to the SMF. The SMF would request the EASDF to populate the ECS option with the UE IP address before the EASDF (or ADNS) sends the request to the server selection function.Figure 7 illustrates an example of an apparatus 200. The apparatus 200 may comprise or implement a network related metrics function (e.g., SMF) , a server selector function, or edge server metrics function such as previously described. The apparatus 200 may have at least one processor and at least one memory storing instructions of a network related metrics function (e.g., SMF) , a server selector function, or edge server metrics function that, when executed by at least one of the at least one processor cause operations or actions of the respective function to be performed. In this example, the apparatus 200 may comprise at least one random access memory (RAM) 211a, and
