Description

Network node, terminal, and communication method

[0001] The present invention relates to a network node, a terminal, and a communication method in a communication system.

[0002] 3GPP (registered trademark) (3rd Generation Partnership Project) is currently studying a wireless communication system called 5G or NR (New Radio) (hereinafter, the wireless communication system will be referred to as "5G" or "NR") in order to achieve a larger system capacity, a higher data transmission speed, and a lower latency in wireless sections. Various wireless technologies are being studied for 5G to meet the requirements of achieving a throughput of 10 Gbps or more while keeping latency in wireless sections to 1 ms or less.

[0003] In NR, a network architecture including 5GC (5G Core Network) corresponding to EPC (Evolved Packet Core), which is the core network in the network architecture of LTE (Long Term Evolution), and NG-RAN (Next Generation - Radio Access Network) corresponding to E-UTRAN (Evolved Universal Terrestrial Radio Access Network), which is the RAN (Radio Access Network) in the network architecture of LTE, is being considered (for example, Non-Patent Document 1).

[0004] Furthermore, studies have begun on systems beyond 5G, or even 6G. In these future systems, diversified requirements are expected regarding power consumption, latency, communication speed, etc., for diversified devices such as ambient IoT (e.g., wireless tags) and XR (extended reality) with functions that extend virtual reality.

[0005] 3GPP TS 23.501 V18.2.2 (2023-07) 3GPP TS 23.502 V18.2.0 (2023-06) 3GPP TS 33.501 V18.2.0 (2023-06) 3GPP TS 38.331 V17.5.0 (2023-06) 3GPP TS 29.503 V18.2.0 (2023-06) 3GPP TS 29.509 V18.1.0 (2023-06) GSMA, SGP. 21, RSP Architecture, version 3.0, 28 March 2022GSMA, SGP. 22, RSP Technical Specification, version 3.0, 19 October 2022

[0006] For 6G, a system that is more advanced than 5G, a network architecture in which all network equipment is deployed on satellites is being considered. In this case, the common key used for mutual authentication when a terminal connects to the network needs to be stored in the network equipment deployed on the satellite.

[0007] However, there is no defined procedure for securely transmitting the shared key to the network device deployed on the satellite. If the shared key is not available on the network side, even a terminal equipped with an appropriate USIM (Universal Subscriber Identity Module) or eSIM (embedded Subscriber Identity Module) cannot use the network.

[0008] The present invention has been made in view of the above points, and has as its object to define a procedure for properly connecting a terminal to a network in a communication system in which a network device is deployed on a satellite.

[0009] According to the disclosed technology, there is provided a network node having: a receiving unit that receives from a terminal a subscriber identifier, an operation profile including a common key, an additional operation profile including a subscriber information type identifier, and an electronic certificate that proves that the operation profile and the additional operation profile have been issued by a first network node; a control unit that uses the electronic certificate to confirm that the operation profile and the additional operation profile have been issued by the first network node; and a transmitting unit that transmits the subscriber identifier, the common key, and the subscriber information type identifier to a second network node.

[0010] According to the disclosed technology, in a communication system, a network device can define procedures for proper connection of a terminal to a network deployed on a satellite.

[0012] Hereinafter, an embodiment of the present invention will be described with reference to the drawings. Note that the embodiment described below is an example, and the embodiment to which the present invention is applied is not limited to the following embodiment.

[0013] In the operation of the wireless communication system according to the embodiment of the present invention, existing technology is used as appropriate. However, the existing technology is, for example, the existing LTE, but is not limited to the existing LTE. Furthermore, the term "LTE" used in this specification has a broad meaning including LTE-Advanced, and systems subsequent to LTE-Advanced (e.g., NR), or wireless LAN (Local Area Network), unless otherwise specified.

[0014] Furthermore, in the embodiments of the present invention, "configuring" radio parameters and the like may mean that predetermined values are pre-configured, or that radio parameters notified from the network node 30 or the terminal 20 are set.

[0015] Fig. 1 is a diagram illustrating an example of a communication system. As shown in Fig. 1, the communication system is composed of a UE, which is a terminal 20, and multiple network nodes 30. Hereinafter, it is assumed that one network node 30 corresponds to each function, but multiple functions may be realized by one network node 30, or multiple network nodes 30 may realize one function. Furthermore, the "connection" described below may be a logical connection or a physical connection.

[0016] The RAN (Radio Access Network) is a network node 30 having a radio access function, which may include a base station 10, and is connected to a UE, an AMF (Access and Mobility Management Function), and a UPF (User plane function). The AMF is a network node 30 having functions such as terminating the RAN interface, terminating the NAS (Non-Access Stratum), registration management, connection management, reachability management, and mobility management. The UPF is a network node 30 having functions such as a PDU (Protocol Data Unit) session point to the outside that interconnects with a DN (Data Network), packet routing and forwarding, and user plane QoS (Quality of Service) handling. The UPF and the DN constitute a network slice. In the wireless communication network according to the embodiment of the present invention, multiple network slices are constructed.

[0017] The AMF is connected to the UE, RAN, SMF (Session Management function), NSSF (Network Slice Selection Function), NEF (Network Exposure Function), NRF (Network Repository Function), UDM (Unified Data Management), AUSF (Authentication Server Function), PCF (Policy Control Function), and AF (Application Function). The NSSF is a network node 30 having functions such as selecting a network slice to which a UE connects, determining an allowed NSSAI (Network Slice Selection Assistance Information), determining an NSSAI to be set, and determining an AMF set to which a UE connects. The PCF is a network node 30 having a function of controlling network policies. The AF is a network node 30 having a function of controlling application servers. The NRF is a network node 30 having a function of discovering NF instances that provide services. The UDM is a network node 30 that manages subscriber data and authentication data. The UDM is connected to a UDR (User Data Repository) that stores the data. The UDM may also include an ARPF (Authentication Credential Repository and Processing Function) that has the function of processing and managing authentication information, and a SIDF (Subscription Identifier De-concealing Function) that has the function of decrypting encrypted identification information. Alternatively, the UDM may perform these functions by accessing another network node that has an ARPF or SIDF.

[0019] Fig. 2 is a diagram illustrating an example of a communication system in a roaming environment. As shown in Fig. 2, the network is composed of a UE, which is a terminal 20, and multiple network nodes 30. Hereinafter, it is assumed that one network node 30 corresponds to each function, but multiple functions may be realized by one network node 30, or multiple network nodes 30 may realize one function. Furthermore, the "connection" described below may be a logical connection or a physical connection.

[0020] The RAN is a network node 30 having a radio access function, and is connected to the UE, the AMF, and the UPF. The AMF is a network node 30 having functions such as RAN interface termination, NAS termination, registration management, connection management, reachability management, and mobility management. The UPF is a network node 30 having functions such as a PDU session point to the outside that interconnects with the DN, packet routing and forwarding, and user plane QoS handling. The UPF and the DN constitute a network slice. In the wireless communication network according to the embodiment of the present invention, multiple network slices are constructed.

[0021] The AMF is connected to the UE, RAN, SMF, NSSF, NEF, NRF, UDM, AUSF, PCF, AF, and SEPP (Security Edge Protection Proxy). The AMF, SMF, NSSF, NEF, NRF, UDM, AUSF, PCF, and AF are network nodes 30 that are interconnected via respective service-based interfaces, Namf, Nsmf, Nnssf, Nnef, Nnrf, Nudm, Nausf, Npcf, and Naf.

[0022] The SMF is a network node 30 having functions such as session management, UE IP address allocation and management, DHCP function, ARP proxy, and roaming function. The NEF is a network node 30 having a function of notifying other NFs of capabilities and events. The NSSF is a network node 30 having functions such as selecting a network slice to which a UE connects, determining an allowed NSSAI, determining a configured NSSAI, and determining an AMF set to which a UE connects. The PCF is a network node 30 having a function of controlling network policies. The AF is a network node 30 having a function of controlling application servers. The NRF is a network node 30 having a function of discovering NF instances that provide services. The SEPP is a non-transparent proxy that filters control plane messages between PLMNs (Public Land Mobile Networks). The vSEPP shown in FIG. 2 is a SEPP in the visited network, and the hSEPP is a SEPP in the home network.

[0023] As shown in Figure 2, a UE is in a roaming environment connected to a RAN and an AMF in a Visited PLMN (VPLMN). The VPLMN and a Home PLMN (HPLMN) are connected via a vSEPP and an hSEPP. The UE can communicate with a UDM in the HPLMN via the AMF in the VPLMN, for example.

[0024] (Example 1) Example 1 will be described. In Example 1, a procedure for appropriately connecting a terminal to a network in a communication system in which a network device is deployed on a satellite will be described. FIG. 3 is a diagram showing an example of a first sequence diagram in an embodiment of the present invention, and FIG. 4 is a diagram showing an example of a second sequence diagram in an embodiment of the present invention. In the sequence diagrams shown in FIGS. 3 and 4, the network devices (network nodes 30 such as gNB (base station 10), AMF, AUSF, UDM / ARPF / SIDF, SMF, and UPF) shown in FIGS. 1 and 2 are deployed on a satellite. In addition, a Subscription Manager (SM) cache server that temporarily acquires and manages subscriber information from a terminal 20 is deployed on the satellite instead of the SM deployed on a normal network.

[0025] The eUICC (embedded Universal Integrated Circuit Card) in FIGS. 3 and 4 also includes a configuration profile (Provisional Profile, PP), an operational profile (OP), and an additional operational profile (additional OP). The configuration profile (PP) is used to perform pre-configuration before starting network use using the operational profile (OP). The operational profile (OP) is used to use services provided by a mobile operator. The OP includes a common key used in mutual authentication performed when the terminal 20 connects to the network. The additional operational profile (additional OP) includes an identifier (subscriber information type identifier) for identifying the type of subscriber information and an electronic certificate certifying that information such as the OP has been issued by the SM cache server. The subscriber information type identifier is, for example, an identifier that identifies the type of service to which the subscriber has subscribed (information such as the monthly data volume and communication speed).

[0026] Furthermore, information relating to an IP (Internet Protocol) address or FQDN (Fully Qualified Domain Name) required to access the SM cache server is set in advance in the terminal 20 .

[0027] First, the procedure for registering the terminal 20 of a new subscriber using the operational profile (OP) will be described with reference to the sequence diagram of FIG.

[0028] Step S301: The terminal 20 transmits a request to read an OP to the eUICC.

[0029] Step S302: The eUICC reads the OP and transmits a response to the received request to the terminal 20. Furthermore, the terminal 20 starts a registration procedure for connecting to the network using the read OP. For the registration procedure processing executed in the subsequent steps, refer to section 4.2.2.2 of Non-Patent Document 2. For the authentication-related procedures in the registration procedure (steps S307 to S312), refer to section 6 of Non-Patent Document 3.

[0030] Step S303: The terminal 20 transmits an RRC Setup Request to the base station 10. This message is based on the RRC protocol (see Non-Patent Document 4). This message may also be called a radio connection setup request message.

[0031] Step S304: The base station 10 transmits RRC Setup to the terminal 20.

[0032] Step S305: The terminal 20 transmits an RRCSetupComplete message to the base station 10. The message includes a SUCI (Subscription Concealed Identifier) that is a subscriber identifier for the terminal 20 making a request to register with the network.

[0033] Step S306: The base station 10 sends an Initial UE Message to the AMF, which includes the SUCI received in step S305. This message may also be referred to as an Initial UE Message.

[0034] Step S307: The AMF sends a Nausf_UEAuthentication_Authenticate request to the AUSF, which includes the SUCI received in step S306.

[0035] Step S308: AUSF sends a Nudm_UEAuthentication_Get request to UDM, which message includes the SUCI received in step S307.

[0036] Step S309: The UDM causes the SIDF to decrypt the SUCI received in step S307 and obtain a SUPI (Subscription Permanent Identifier).

[0037] Step S310: The UDM and / or ARPF confirms that it does not hold information corresponding to the SUPI acquired in step S309.

[0038] Step S311: The UDM sends a Nudm_UEAuthentication_Get response to the AUSF. The message includes a response code indicating that the user cannot be found (404 Not Found (USER NOT FOUND), see section 6.3.3.4.3 of Non-Patent Document 5) according to the confirmation result of step S310.

[0039] Step S312: The AUSF sends a Nausf_UEAuthentication_Authenticate response to the AMF. The message includes a response code indicating that the user cannot be found (404 Not Found (USER NOT FOUND), see section 6.1.3.2.3 of Non-Patent Document 6) according to the confirmation result of step S310.

[0040] Step S313: The AMF sends a Downlink NAS Transport to the base station 10. The message includes information indicating that registration has been rejected because the terminal 20 requesting registration to the network is an illegal terminal (illegal UE).

[0041] Step S314: The base station 10 transmits a DLInformationTransfer message to the terminal 20. The message includes information indicating that registration has been rejected because the terminal 20 requesting registration with the network is an illegal terminal (illegal UE).

[0042] As the above process shows, the registration to the network requested by the terminal 20 using the operational profile (OP) fails because the network rejects the request since the information about the new subscriber of the terminal 20 is not registered in the network.

[0043] Next, using the sequence diagram of Figure 4, we will explain the registration procedure using a configuration profile (PP) that a new subscriber performs to perform pre-configuration before starting to use the network using an operational profile (OP).

[0044] Step S401: Using the same procedure as that described in the sequence diagram of Fig. 3, the terminal 20 reads the PP from the eUICC and executes a registration request to the network, thereby executing the registration procedure of the terminal 20. Here, the SUPI used in the registration procedure by the PP has been registered with the network, and therefore the registration procedure is successful.

[0045] Step S402: A PDU session establishment procedure using PP (see section 4.3.2 of Non-Patent Document 2) is executed between the terminal 20 and the network.

[0046] Step S403: The LPA (Local Profile Assistant, see Non-Patent Documents 6 and 7) in the terminal 20 is activated, mutual authentication is completed between the terminal 20 and the SM cache server, and encrypted communication is established.

[0047] Step S404: The terminal 20 transmits to the eUICC an instruction to upload the operational profile (OP) to the network.

[0048] Step S405: The LPA in the eUICC is activated, and mutual authentication is completed between the eUICC and the SM cache server.

[0049] Step S406: The LPA in the eUICC transmits the OP and the additional OP to the LPA in the terminal 20. Here, the data of the OP and the additional OP may be divided and transmitted.

[0050] Step S407: The terminal 20 sends the OP and additional OP to the SM cache server. The OP includes a subscriber identifier (e.g., SUPI) and a common key used in mutual authentication when the terminal 20 connects to the network. The additional OP also includes an identifier for identifying the type of subscriber information (subscriber information type identifier) and a digital certificate certifying that information such as the OP was issued by the SM. For example, the digital certificate may be a signed certificate generated using a private key held by the SM for at least one of the subscriber identifier, common key, and subscriber information type identifier. Since mutual authentication between the terminal 20 and the SM cache server is completed and encrypted communication is established in step S403, secure information transmission and reception between the terminal 20 and the SM cache server is possible, preventing spoofing and data leakage. The subscriber identifier, common key, and subscriber information type identifier may also be referred to as information defining a new subscriber.

[0051] Step S408: The SM cache server verifies the digital certificate received in step S407 to confirm that the information received in step S407 has been issued by the SM.

[0052] Step S409: The SM cache server stores the information (subscriber identifier, common key, and subscriber information type identifier) received in step S407, sets a timer indicating the time until a request to delete the received information is sent, and starts the timer. The timer may also indicate the time until a request to delete the received information or part of the information is sent to another network node (such as a UDM).

[0053] Step S410: The SM cache server transmits to the terminal 20 a delivery confirmation notifying that the OP and the additional OP have been received.

[0054] Step S411: The terminal 20 transmits to the eUICC an instruction to switch from PP to OP (to enable OP).

[0055] Step S412: The SM cache server transmits the subscriber identifier and the common key received in step S407 to the UDM.

[0056] Step S413: The UDM causes the ARPF to store the common key received in step S407 in association with the subscriber identifier.

[0057] Step S414: The UDM sends a delivery confirmation to the SM cache server notifying that the subscriber identifier and the common key have been received.

[0058] Step S415: The SM cache server transmits the subscriber identifier and the subscriber information type identifier received in step S407 to the UDM.

[0059] Step S416: The UDM uses the subscriber information type identifier received in step S415 to derive subscriber information for the subscriber identified by the subscriber identifier and stores the derived subscriber information in association with the subscriber identifier. For example, the UDM derives subscriber information including information on the monthly communication volume and communication speed corresponding to the type of service subscribed to by the subscriber, as identified by the subscriber information type identifier, and stores the derived subscriber information in association with the subscriber identifier. Here, since the UDM has pre-stored subscriber information corresponding to the subscriber information type identifier in a database, the terminal 20 only needs to transmit the subscriber information type identifier to the UDM instead of the subscriber information. This eliminates the need to transmit subscriber information containing a large amount of information, making it possible to reduce the amount of information to be transmitted.

[0060] Step S417: The UDM sends a delivery confirmation to the SM cache server notifying that the subscriber identifier and the subscriber information type identifier have been received.

[0061] Step S418: Using the same procedure as that described in the sequence diagram of Fig. 3, the terminal 20 executes a registration request to the network using the OP, thereby executing the registration procedure of the terminal 20. Since the SUPI used in the registration procedure by the OP has been registered in the network in the above procedure, the registration procedure is successful.

[0062] Step S419: The SM cache server detects that the timer set in step S409 has expired. The SM cache server also deletes the information (subscriber identifier, common key, and subscriber information) stored in step S409.

[0063] Step S420: The SM cache server sends to the UDM a request to delete the subscriber identifier and the common key sent in step S412.

[0064] Step S421: The UDM causes the ARPF to delete the subscriber identifier and the common key stored in step S413.

[0065] Step S422: The UDM sends a notification to the SM cache server that the subscriber identifier and the common key have been deleted.

[0066] Step S423: The SM cache server sends to the UDM a request to delete the subscriber information corresponding to the subscriber identifier and the subscriber information type identifier sent in step S415.

[0067] Step S424: The UDM erases the subscriber identifier and subscriber information stored in step S416.

[0068] Step S425: The UDM sends a deletion completion notice of the subscriber identifier and subscriber information to the SM cache server. In this way, by deleting the shared key and subscriber information after the set timer expires, it is possible to prevent information leakage.

[0069] The above-described embodiments allow a communication system in which network equipment defines procedures for proper connection of terminals to a satellite-based network.

[0070] (Device Configuration) Next, a description will be given of an example of the functional configuration of the base station 10, network node 30, and terminal 20 that perform the processes and operations described above. A network node having a receiving unit that receives from a terminal a subscriber identifier, an operational profile including a common key, an additional operational profile including a subscriber information type identifier, and an electronic certificate proving that the operational profile and the additional operational profile have been issued by a first network node, a control unit that uses the electronic certificate to confirm that the operational profile and the additional operational profile have been issued by the first network node, and a transmitting unit that transmits the subscriber identifier, the common key, and the subscriber information type identifier to a second network node.

2. The network node according to claim 1, wherein the control unit sets a timer indicating the time until a request to erase subscriber information corresponding to the common key and the subscriber identifier is sent to the second network node, and the transmission unit sends a request to erase the common key and the subscriber information to the second network node after the timer expires.

3. A network node having a receiving unit that receives a subscriber identifier, a common key, and a subscriber information type identifier from another network node, and a control unit that stores subscriber information derived using the common key and the subscriber information type identifier in association with the subscriber identifier.

4. A network node as described in claim 3, wherein the receiving unit receives a request to erase the common key and the subscriber information from the other network node, and the control unit erases the common key and the subscriber information in response to the request.

5. A terminal having a transmitting unit that transmits to a network node a subscriber identifier, an operation profile including a common key, an additional operation profile including a subscriber information type identifier, and an electronic certificate proving that the operation profile and the additional operation profile have been issued by another network node, a receiving unit that receives a delivery confirmation from the network node notifying receipt of the operation profile and the additional operation profile, and a control unit that executes a registration request to the network using the operation profile.

6. A communication method executed by a network node, comprising the steps of: receiving from a terminal a subscriber identifier, an operational profile including a common key, an additional operational profile including a subscriber information type identifier, and an electronic certificate proving that the operational profile and the additional operational profile have been issued by a first network node; confirming using the electronic certificate that the operational profile and the additional operational profile have been issued by the first network node; and transmitting the subscriber identifier, the common key, and the subscriber information type identifier to a second network node.
