Abstract
Description
PORT ACCESS NEEDLE AND EXTRACTION TOOLCROSS-REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATION
[0001] The present application claims priority to United States Provisional Application No. 63 / 581,745 entitled “Port Access Needle and Extraction Tool” filed September 11, 2023, the disclosure of which is hereby incorporated by reference in its entirety.BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTIONField of the Disclosure
[0002] The present disclosure relates generally to a port access needle and extraction tool.Description of the Related Art
[0003] Oncology patients are sent home typically for a long duration (approximately 46 hours) with infusion of a drug. The current practice is to return to the clinic at the scheduled time for the takedown or discontinuation of the infusion. This is a burden on clinics as sometimes the infusion does not end on time (particularly with elastomeric infusion pumps). The patient may then have to wait several hours before the drug or infusion is completely delivered. It is becoming more common to push the activities to the home environment to free up the clinic for other activities and allow the patient to do takedown in the comfort of their home. Simplifying the at home takedown and building the patients confidence in doing it themselves are a priority. Many people have an aversion to needles and removal of the needle can also present discomfort due to dislodgement of the needle while peeling the dressing off.SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
[0004] In one aspect or embodiment, a port access needle extraction tool includes a housing defining an interior space, with the housing having a first end and second end positioned opposite from the first end, a needle engagement member at least partially positioned within the interior space, with the needle engagement member configured to engage a portion of a port access needle, and a biasing member. The needle engagement member has an extended position and a retracted position, with the biasing member biasing the needle engagement member toward the retracted position. Upon engagement of the needle engagement member with the portion of the port access needle, the needle engagement member is configured to move to the retracted position and retract the port access needle within the interior space of the housing.
[0005] The tool may further include a cutting member positioned on the housing or the needle engagement member, with the cutting member configured to cut a portion of a dressing of the port access needle. The biasing member may be a spring, where the spring is compressed when the needle engagement member is in the extended position.
[0006] In a further aspect or embodiment, an assembly includes a port access needle assembly including: a port base defining a fluid path; tubing in fluid communication with the fluid path of the port base; a needle base received by and moveable relative to the port base; and a needle connected to the needle base, with the needle in fluid communication with the fluid path of the port base and the tubing, and a port access needle extraction tool including: a housing defining an interior space, with the housing having a first end and second end positioned opposite from the first end; a needle engagement member at least partially positioned within the interior space, with the needle engagement member configured to engage the needle base of the port access needle assembly; and a biasing member. The needle engagement member has an extended position and a retracted position, with the biasing member biasing the needle engagement member toward the retracted position. Upon engagement of the needle engagement member with the needle base of the needle base of the port access needle assembly, the needle engagement member is configured to move to the retracted position and retract the needle within the interior space of the housing.
[0007] A seal may be positioned between the port base and the needle base to provide a sealed flow path from the tubing to the needle. The port access needle assembly may further include a dressing positioned below the needle base and the port base, where the port access needle extraction tool further includes a cutting member positioned on the housing or the needle engagement member, with the cutting member configured to cut a portion of the dressing prior to retraction of the needle. The needle base may be connected to the port base via a snap fit, a frangible connection, adhesive, or a mechanical interlock. The port access needle assembly may further include a dressing positioned below the needle base and the port base, where the dressing includes a weakened or perforated portion configured to tear away from the dressing when the needle is retracted.
[0008] In a further aspect or embodiment, a port access needle extraction tool includes a housing defining an interior space, with the housing having a first end and second end positioned opposite from the first end, a needle engagement member at least partially positioned within the interior space, with the needle engagement member configured to engage a portion of a port access needle, and an actuator connected to the needle engagement member. The actuator is manually moveable to move the needle engagement member from an extendedposition to a retracted position, where, upon movement of the actuator, the needle engagement member is configured to move to the retracted position and retract the port access needle within the interior space of the housing.
[0009] The actuator may be positioned on an exterior of the housing and connected to the needle engagement member via a slot defined by the housing. The tool may further include a cutting member positioned on the housing or the needle engagement member, with the cutting member configured to cut a portion of a dressing of the port access needle.
[0010] In a further aspect or embodiment, an assembly includes a port access needle assembly including: a port base defining a fluid path; tubing in fluid communication with the fluid path of the port base; a needle base received by and moveable relative to the port base; and a needle connected to the needle base, the needle in fluid communication with the fluid path of the port base and the tubing, and a port access needle extraction tool including: a housing defining an interior space, with the housing having a first end and second end positioned opposite from the first end; a needle engagement member at least partially positioned within the interior space, with the needle engagement member configured to engage the needle base of the port access needle assembly; and an actuator connected to the needle engagement member. The actuator is manually moveable to move the needle engagement member from an extended position to a retracted position, where, upon movement of the actuator, the needle engagement member is configured to move to the retracted position and retract the needle within the interior space of the housing.BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
