Description

[0001] A lighting device comprising a radar sensor unit

[0002] FIELD OF THE INVENTION

[0003] The present invention relates to a lighting device comprising a radar sensor unit.

[0004] BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

[0005] There are different types of lighting devices, wherein some types of lighting devices are configured so as to be particularly useful in specific applications and may be capable of providing additional functionality other than lighting. It is desired to provide yet further types of lighting devices which in addition to lighting functionality are capable of providing other types of functionalities so as to be particularly useful in specific applications.

[0006] SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

[0007] Radar sensor technology may be used in different applications. One example application is in elderly care, where radar sensors may be used for monitoring a position of a person and sense if the person accidentally falls to the floor. There are different ways to incorporate a radar sensor in different types of products. However, the performance and functionality of the radar sensor may highly depend on exactly how it is arranged (e.g., positioned) in the product, as that may govern the extent to which reflected electromagnetic radiation may be received by the radar sensor, which in turn may determine the region of coverage of the radar sensor, i.e., the region in which the radar sensor may sense presence and / or movement of an object or person.

[0008] When employing a radar sensor for example in elderly care, it may be desired to incorporate the radar sensor in another product, in order to keep the radar sensor hidden from view. One or more lighting devices, or lamps or luminaires, are often included in a room, and as such a radar sensor could be incorporated (e.g., integrated) in a lighting device, lamp or luminaire to keep the radar sensor hidden from view. Some types of lighting devices may be especially suitable for incorporation of a radar sensor therein. For example, so called BR30 bulbs are often used in downlight applications and may provide a sufficiently large space within the bulb to relatively easily accommodate a radar sensor. Lighting devices such as bulbs usually have a chamber delimited by a light-transmissive light exit window, and into which chamber one or more light sources of the lighting device emit light. The light emitted by the one or more light sources and transmitted through the light exit window may constitute the light emitted by the lighting device. The inventors have realized that the distance between a radar sensor incorporated in or at the chamber of the lighting device and the light exit window may to a large extent govern the performance of the radar sensor and the region of coverage of the radar sensor.

[0009] In view of the above, a concern of the present invention is to provide a lighting device in which a radar sensor is incorporated and for which tailoring of the distance between the radar sensor a light exit window of the lighting device when producing the lighting device may be facilitated, in order to achieve a certain (e.g., selected) performance and region of coverage of the radar sensor.

[0010] According to a first aspect of the present invention, a lighting device is provided. The lighting device is configured to emit device light. The lighting device comprises a housing, a light-emitting unit configured to, in operation, emit light, and a radar sensor unit configured to, in operation, transmit and receive electromagnetic radiation in at least one wavelength range. The lighting device comprises a surface structure which is connected to the housing via an intermediate element arranged between the housing and the surface structure. The surface structure is transmissive for at least light and for electromagnetic radiation in the at least one wavelength range. The light-emitting unit is connected to the housing and configured to, in operation, emit light into a chamber. The chamber is defined at least in part by a surface of the surface structure and a surface of the intermediate element, towards the surface structure, wherein the device light comprises at least the light emitted by the light-emitting unit into the chamber and being transmitted through the surface structure. The radar sensor unit is connected to the intermediate element and configured to, in operation, transmit electromagnetic radiation in the at least one wavelength range into the chamber towards the surface structure, and receive electromagnetic radiation in the at least one wavelength range from outside the lighting device having been transmitted through the surface structure into the chamber.

[0011] Thus, the intermediate element is arranged between the housing and the surface structure. The intermediate element may be directly connected to the surface structure and / or the radar sensor unit, respectively. For example, the radar sensor unit may be arranged on a substrate such as printed circuit board (PCB), and the intermediate element may be directly connected to a side of the substrate. By means of the intermediate element, the tolerance stack-up between the surface structure and the radar sensor unit may be kept relatively small, and the radar sensor unit may be decoupled from the housing. The lighting device may comprise a heat transferring unit, including, e.g., a heat spreader and / or a heat sink, with the light-emitting unit being connected to the housing via the heat transferring unit. By means of the intermediate element, the radar sensor unit may be decoupled from the heat transferring unit. Decoupling of the radar sensor unit from any heat transferring unit may facilitate keeping the radar sensor unit relatively cool during use of the lighting device, which may allow for achieving a high performance of the radar sensor unit. By means of the intermediate element to which the radar sensor unit is connected, positioning of the radar sensor unit in relation to the surface structure so as to achieve a desired distance between the radar sensor unit and the surface structure along a longitudinal axis of the chamber may be facilitated during manufacturing of the lighting device. As indicated in the foregoing, by achieving a desired distance between the radar sensor unit and the surface structure along a longitudinal axis of the chamber, a certain (e.g., desired or required) performance and region of coverage of the radar sensor unit may be achieved.

[0012] The term “connected” in the context of this invention may be equal to the terms attached to, coupled to, in physical contact with, mounted to, affixed to, or fastened to. The term “directly connected” means that two elements of the lighting device are connected to each other without any intermediary element or component therebetween.

[0013] As mentioned, the radar sensor unit may be directly connected to the intermediate element. Further, the intermediate element may be directly connected to the surface structure. Further, the light emitting unit may be directly connected to the housing.

[0014] The intermediate element and the surface structure may be directly connected at respective surfaces thereof which are arranged to be mating with each other when engaged. Such mating surfaces may facilitate manufacturing of the lighting device.

[0015] The intermediate element may be directly connected to the housing, and the intermediate element and the housing may be directly connected at respective surfaces thereof which are arranged to be mating with each other when engaged. Such mating surfaces may facilitate manufacturing of the lighting device.

[0016] As mentioned, the lighting device may comprise a heat transferring unit, wherein the light-emitting unit may be connected to the housing via the heat transferring unit.

[0017] The light-emitting unit may be arranged separately from the intermediate element, which may facilitate decoupling of the radar sensor unit from any heat transferring unit, e.g., a heat spreader and / or a heat sink, via which the light-emitting unit may be connected to the housing. Decoupling of the radar sensor unit from any heat transferring unit may facilitate keeping the radar sensor unit relatively cool during use of the lighting device - e.g., during use or operation of the light-emitting unit - which may allow for achieving a high performance of the radar sensor unit. Thus, the radar sensor unit may be arranged separately from the heat transferring unit.

[0018] The radar sensor unit may be arranged closer to the surface structure than the light-emitting unit along a longitudinal axis of the chamber. By such a configuration, it may be facilitated or ensured that there are relatively few or even no metal components of the lighting device between a plane of the radar sensor unit perpendicular to the longitudinal axis and the surface structure, as the light-emitting unit often includes metal components. By having relatively few or even no metal components of the lighting device between a plane of the radar sensor unit perpendicular to the longitudinal axis and the surface structure, the performance of the radar sensor unit may be increased. For example, the radar sensor unit may comprise a radar sensor, which is configured to, in operation, transmit and receive electromagnetic radiation in at least one wavelength range, and a substrate such as a PCB on which the radar sensor may be arranged. Similarly, the light-emitting unit may comprise at least one light source and a substrate such as a PCB on which the at least one light source may be arranged. The plane of the radar sensor unit perpendicular to the longitudinal axis may coincide or be parallel with a plane defined by the substrate on which the radar sensor unit is arranged. The substrate on which the at least one light source may be arranged and the substrate on which the radar sensor may be arranged may be perpendicular to the longitudinal axis, and the substrate on which the radar sensor may be arranged may be closer to the surface structure than the substrate on which the at least one light source may be arranged along the longitudinal axis. In a direction along the longitudinal axis towards the surface structure, the substrate on which the at least one light source may be arranged may be below the substrate on which the radar sensor may be arranged. Thereby, the at least one light source of the light-emitting unit such as one or more light-emitting diodes may be below the substrate on which the radar sensor may be arranged in a direction along the longitudinal axis towards the surface structure.

[0019] The radar sensor unit may be arranged at least 3mm, such as at least 5mm closer, preferably at least 10mm closer, most preferably at least 15mm closer to the surface structure than the light-emitting unit along a longitudinal axis of the chamber.

[0020] The light emitting unit may have a main light emitting direction. The radar sensor unit may have a main electromagnetic radiation emitting direction. The main light emitting direction and the main electromagnetic radiation emitting direction may be substantially parallel. Additionally, main light emitting direction and the main electromagnetic radiation emitting direction may be substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis of the chamber. The difference between the main light emitting direction and the main electromagnetic radiation emitting direction may be less than 45°, such as less than 30°, especially less than 10°.

[0021] The radar sensor unit may be connected to the intermediate element and / or the intermediate element may be arranged such that a distance between the radar sensor unit and the surface structure along a longitudinal axis of the chamber is in a range between (e.g., about) 27 mm and (e.g., about) 30 mm. The distance may for example be (e.g., about) 27.5 mm or (e.g., about) 29.1 mm.

[0022] The surface structure may be configured to be light-transparent. The surface structure may be configured to be light-diffusive. Not the entire surface structure needs to be either light-transparent or light-diffusive, but a portion of the surface structure could be light- transparent, and another portion of the surface structure could be light-diffusive, for example.

[0023] At least the mentioned surface of the intermediate element, which surface in part defines the chamber, may be configured to be reflective to light.

[0024] The radar sensor unit may be configured to sense presence and / or movement of an object or a subject in the vicinity of the lighting device by means of transmitting electromagnetic radiation in the at least one wavelength range into the chamber towards the surface structure and so as to subsequently impinge on the object or subject, and receiving electromagnetic radiation in the at least one wavelength range having been reflected from the object or subject and subsequently transmitted through the surface structure into the chamber.

[0025] The light-emitting unit may comprise at least one light source. Each or any light source of the at least one light source may for example comprise a solid-state emitter, such as one or more light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and / or one or more lasers. Each or any LED may for example include or be constituted by an inorganic LED and / or an organic LED (OLED). Solid state light emitters are relatively cost-efficient light sources since they in general are relatively inexpensive and have a relatively high optical efficiency and a relatively long lifetime. Examples of LEDs include semiconductor, organic, or polymer / polymeric LEDs, optically pumped phosphor coated LEDs, optically pumped nanocrystal LEDs or any other similar devices as would be readily understood by a person skilled in the art. For example, the term LED can encompass a bare LED die arranged in a housing, which may be referred to as a LED package. According to another example, the term LED can encompass a Chip Scale Package (CSP) LED, which may comprise a LED die directly attached to a substrate such as a printed circuit board (PCB), and not via a sub-mount. The term LED can for example encompass a laser diode, because a laser diode is a diode which emits light.

[0026] According to a second aspect of the present invention, a luminaire or lamp is provided, which luminaire or lamp comprises at least one lighting device according to the first aspect of the present invention.

[0027] Further objects and advantages of the present invention are described in the following by means of exemplifying embodiments. It is noted that the present invention relates to all possible combinations of features recited in the claims. Further features of, and advantages with, the present invention will become apparent when studying the appended claims and the description herein. [0039] The lighting device 20 comprises a surface structure 1. The surface structure 1 is connected to the housing 5 via an intermediate element 2 that is arranged between the housing 5 and the surface structure 1. The surface structure 1 is transmissive for at least light (as may be emitted by the light-emitting unit 8) and for electromagnetic radiation in the at least one wavelength range. With regard to the surface structure 1 being transmissive for light, the surface structure 1 could, at least in the context of one or more embodiments of the present invention, be referred to as a light exit window of the lighting device 20.

[0040] The surface structure 1 may be configured to be light-transparent, for example by using materials and / or techniques such as known in the art for achieving lighttransparency. The surface structure 1 may be configured to be light-diffusive, for example by using materials and / or techniques such as known in the art for achieving light-diffusivity. Not the entire surface structure 1 needs to be either light-transparent or light-diffusive, but a portion of the surface structure 1 could be light-transparent and another portion of the surface structure 1 could be light-diffusive, for example. The light-emitting unit 8 is connected to the housing 5 and is configured to, in operation, emit light into a chamber 12, which chamber 12 is defined at least in part by a surface 13 of the surface structure 1 and a surface 14 of the intermediate element 2, towards the surface structure 1. The device light 21 comprises at least the light emitted by the lightemitting unit 8 into the chamber 12 and thereafter transmitted through the surface structure 1. That is, the radar sensor unit 3,4 is connected to the intermediate element 2 without any intermediary element or component therebetween, and the intermediate element 2 is connected to the surface structure 1 without any intermediary element or component therebetween.

[0044] Further in accordance with the embodiment of the present invention illustrated in Figure 1, the lighting device 20 comprises a heat transferring unit 6, 7, which may comprise a heat sink 6 and a heat spreader 7. The light-emitting unit 8 may be connected to the housing 5 via the heat transferring unit 6, 7, as illustrated in Figure 1. In accordance with the embodiment of the present invention illustrated in Figure 1, the light-emitting unit 8 may be arranged separately from the intermediate element 2, which may facilitate decoupling of the radar sensor unit 4 from the heat transferring unit 6, 7. Thus, the radar sensor unit 4 may be arranged separately from the heat transferring unit 6, 7.

[0045] In accordance with the embodiment of the present invention illustrated in Figure 1, the lighting device 20 is in the form of a bulb, such as a so called BR30 bulb which is often used in downlight applications. In this way, the lighting device 20 may be used for example in elderly care, with the lighting device 20 for example being positioned in a room in such a way that the region of coverage of the radar sensor unit 4 of the lighting device 20 is at least a portion of the interior of the room, and with the radar sensor unit 4 being used for monitoring a position of a person in the room and sense if the person accidentally falls to the floor of the room.

[0047] As illustrated in Figure 1, the chamber 12 may have a longitudinal axis LA. The longitudinal axis LA of the chamber 12 may correspond to the longitudinal axis of the lighting device 20. The longitudinal axis LA of the chamber 12 may alternatively or additionally correspond to or be parallel to the main light emitting direction of the device light. The radar sensor unit 4 may be arranged closer to the surface structure 1 than the lightemitting unit 8 along the longitudinal axis LA of the chamber 12.

[0048] Figure 2 is a schematic, in part sectional view of a portion of the lighting device 20 illustrated in Figure 1. As indicated in Figure 2, there is a distance L between the radar sensor unit 4 and the surface structure 1 along the longitudinal axis of the chamber 12. According to one or more embodiments of the present invention, the radar sensor unit 4 may be connected to the intermediate element 2 and / or the intermediate element 2 may be arranged such that the distance L between the radar sensor unit 4 and the surface structure 1 along the longitudinal axis of the chamber 12 is in a range between 27 mm and 30 mm.

[0049] Figure 3 is an exploded view of a lighting device 20 according to an embodiment of the present invention. The same reference numerals in Figure 3 and in Figures 1 and 2 denote the same or similar elements or components, having the same or similar function. Figure 3 may afford a more detailed view of some of the components of the lighting device 20 compared to Figure 1.

[0050] As illustrated in Figure 3, the intermediate element 2 may have an annular shape. In view of this, and since the size and / or arrangement or configuration of the intermediate element 2 may be tailored during manufacturing of the lighting device 20 to position the radar sensor unit 4 in relation to the surface structure 1 so as to achieve a desired distance between the radar sensor unit 4 and the surface structure 1 along a longitudinal axis LA of the chamber 12, the intermediate element 2 may be referred to as a distance ring.

[0051] As further illustrated in Figure 3, the light-emitting unit 8 may for example comprise a plurality light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and / or light sources of another or other types arranged in one or more successions on a substrate.

[0052] As further illustrated in Figure 3, the lighting device 20 may comprise one or more substrates arranged within the housing 5. In accordance with the embodiment of the present invention illustrated in Figure 3, the lighting device 20 comprises two substrates 9 and 10 arranged within the housing 5. Each of the substrates 9 and 10 may for example comprise a PCB and may include circuitry such as driver circuitry for controlling supply of power to the plurality of light sources (e.g., LEDs) and / or for controlling operation of the plurality of light sources. Each of the substrates 9 and 10 may for example include circuitry for processing signals generated by conversion of electromagnetic radiation received by the radar sensor unit 4 for sensing presence and / or movement of an object or a subject in the vicinity of the lighting device 20.

[0053] As further illustrated in Figure 3, the lighting device 20 comprises a socket 11 (directly) connected to the housing 5 for electrically and mechanically connecting the lighting device 20 in a luminaire or lamp (not shown in Figure 3), for example.

[0054] In conclusion, a lighting device is disclosed, comprising a housing, a lightemitting unit, a radar sensor unit, and a surface structure connected to the housing via an intermediate element arranged between the housing and the surface structure. The lightemitting unit is connected to the housing and configured to, in operation, emit light into a chamber, defined at least in part by a surface of the surface structure and a surface of the intermediate element, towards the surface structure. The radar sensor unit is connected to the intermediate element and configured to, in operation, transmit electromagnetic radiation in at least one wavelength range into the chamber towards the surface structure. The surface structure is transmissive for at least light and for electromagnetic radiation in the at least one wavelength range.

[0055] While the present invention has been illustrated in the appended drawings and the foregoing description, such illustration is to be considered illustrative or exemplifying and not restrictive; the present invention is not limited to the disclosed embodiments. Other variations to the disclosed embodiments can be understood and effected by those skilled in the art in practicing the claimed invention, from a study of the drawings, the disclosure, and the appended claims. In the appended claims, the word “comprising” does not exclude other elements or steps, and the indefinite article ”a” or “an” does not exclude a plurality.
