AI Technical Summary
Existing wireless communication systems lack effective methods to manage user equipment (UE) operations within no-transmit zones (NTZs), particularly in areas requiring protection from interference such as airports or sensitive military installations.
The system involves a wireless communication node interacting with a core network to determine and broadcast NTZ areas to user equipment. The node sends specific configurations to UEs based on trigger events, such as entering or leaving an NTZ, to restrict or allow uplink transmissions and frequency usage.
This solution enables UEs to autonomously restrict uplink transmissions within NTZs, preventing interference in sensitive areas while ensuring seamless communication outside these zones.

[0033] 2. Systems and Methods for Managing a User Equipment for a No-Transmit Zone
[0034] In order to protect certain areas (e.g., sensitive areas such as an airport) from the intentional or unintentional influence / interference of a UE, the UE (e.g., wireless communication device, which can be a cellphone, a communications unit in a vehicle, a drone, an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) , etc. ) can be prohibited / restricted from certain operations such as sending uplink (UL) messages. For example, the UE can be prohibited / restricted from sending UL messages and / or configured to use (e.g., limited to using) specific frequencies in specific areas called no-transmit zone (NTZ) . This disclosure provides solutions on how to enable UEs to autonomously restrict / limit / prevent transmission of uplink messages in a NTZ.
[0035] In Long-Term Evolution (LTE) and New Radio (NR) systems, 'no-fly zones’ can be specified, and drones (e.g., UAVs) can be prohibited from entering or approaching these areas. A common method for preventing drones from entering these no-fly zones can involve allowing the drones to access the location information of the no-fly or height-limited zones. By comparing the UAV's position with that of the no-fly zone, the UAV's behavior can be regulated / controlled based on specific distance and / or height threshold (s) between the UAV and the no-fly zone. In order to standardize the behavior of UEs in NTZs, at least some of the procedures disclosed herein can be adopted.
[0036] FIG. 3 illustrates an example process 300 of managing NTZ operation, in accordance with one or more embodiments of the present disclosure. The process 300 may be implemented using any one or more of the components and devices detailed herein in conjunction with FIGS. 1 and 2. In overview, the process 300 may be performed by a wireless communication node (e.g., a BS or a radio access network (RAN) node) , a core network and / or a wireless communication device (e.g., UE) , in some embodiments. Additional, fewer, or different operations may be performed in the process 300 depending on the embodiment. At least one aspect of the operations is directed to a system, method, apparatus, or a computer-readable medium.
[0037] Regarding (305) , and in some embodiments, a core network can determine a NTZ broadcast area. The core network can determine the NTZ broadcast area for BSs or cells covering area (s) of one or more NTZs. This NTZ broadcast area can encompass one or more cells. This NTZ broadcast area can include one or more base stations (BSs) .
[0038] Regarding (310) , and in some embodiments, the BSs within the NTZ broadcast area can broadcast / send / transmit the NTZ information (e.g., information about the one or more NTZs) to UEs (within coverage of the BS, e.g., to control / manage the behavior of the UEs) . For example, the NTZ broadcast area can contain at least one cell {cell X1, ..., cell Xi, ..., cell Xj} . A BS within the NTZ broadcast area can perform the broadcast via any type or form of signaling. The signaling can include at least one of: system information block (SIB) signaling, radio resource control (RRC) signaling, medium access control control element (MAC CE) signaling, or downlink control information (DCI) signaling.
[0039] Regarding (315) , and in certain embodiments, the BS can transmit the trigger events to the UE via RRC signaling when the UE moves in or out of the NTZ. Regarding (320) , and in some embodiments, the BS can determine / define / specify one or more trigger events of the UE through at least of NTZ information, related location, duration and threshold. Regarding (325) , and in some embodiments, the UE can report an occurrence of a trigger event and the UE location to the BS. Regarding (330) , and in some embodiments, the BS can transmit a specific configuration (e.g., corresponding to the trigger event) to the UE via RRC signaling, MAC CE, or DCI. Regarding (335) , and in some embodiments, the UE can transmit the UL message to the BS according to the specific configuration.
[0040] In order for all BSs in the NTZ broadcast area to broadcast NTZ information (e.g., jointly, consistently, in a coordinated / unified fashion) , the interaction between the BSs and the core network may include the following.
[0041] In certain embodiments, the core network can determine the NTZ broadcast area. The core network can send / transmit / broadcast a message with the NTZ information to all BSs within the NTZ broadcast area. The NTZ information can include an indication of the NTZ broadcast area. The message can include an indication or instruction to all BSs in the NTZ broadcast area to broadcast / send location information about the NTZ (s) to UEs that may be within coverage of the BSs. Each of BSs in the NTZ broadcast area can relay / broadcast / send the location information to one or more of the UEs, via System Information Block (SIB) signaling for instance.
[0042] In some embodiments, the core network can determine the NTZ broadcast area. The core network can send / transmit / broadcast a first message with the NTZ information to all BSs. The NTZ information can include an indication of the NTZ broadcast area. Each BS that is in the NTZ broadcast area can send a second message to the core network to confirm / indicate that the BS is in the NTZ broadcast area (e.g., as instructed / indicated / requested by the first message) . The core network can send / transmit / broadcast a third message to all BSs within the NTZ broadcast area. The third message can include an indication or instruction to all BSs in the NTZ broadcast area to broadcast / send location information about the NTZ (s) to UEs that may be within coverage of the BSs. Each of BSs in the NTZ broadcast area can relay / broadcast / send the location information to one or more of the UEs, via System Information Block (SIB) signaling for instance.
[0043] In particular embodiments, all BSs (e.g., each BS with location information of one or more NTZs) can transmit location information of NTZ (s) to the core network. The core network can determine the NTZ broadcast area (e.g., according to the location information of one or more NTZs, from each of the BSs) .
[0044] 2) A BS within cell Xi can broadcast at least one of: the NTZ location information (e.g., location information about the NTZ (s) ) , first threshold, and / or second threshold via SIB signaling. The broadcast can be to any one or more UEs that are in the cell Xi or within coverage of the cell Xi. The NTZ information can comprises, but is not limited to, at least one of: longitude at various NTZ boundaries, latitude at various NTZ boundaries, height at various NTZ boundaries, location data of the NTZ's center or central position, location details of a reference point related to the NTZ, etc. The first threshold can encompass / include, but is not limited to, one or more distance and / or height thresholds. The second threshold can encompass / include, but is not limited to, one or more time duration thresholds.
[0045] 3) Option 1: A UE can access / enter the cell and can report the UE’s location once the UE receives the NTZ information (e.g., after / upon accessing / entering the cell) .
[0046] Option 2: The UE can access the cell and can report the UE’s location if the related location (e.g., distance, separation) between the UE and NTZ is less than a distance threshold but larger than another distance threshold, and the duration is larger than a threshold of time duration. If the related location is less than another smaller threshold, and the duration is larger than a threshold of time duration, the UE can report the occurrence of a new trigger event to the BS.
[0047] 4) New trigger events can be defined / specified by the BS via Radio Resource Control (RRC) signaling corresponding to the UE moving in / out of the NTZ. The BS can transmit the specific configuration to the UE through, but not limited to, RRC, Medium Access Control Control Element (MAC CE) , or Downlink Control Information (DCI) signaling.
[0048] 5) Based on a configuration received from the BS, the UE may determine to not transmit UL messages within the NTZ, or to transmit UL message (s) at a specific frequency or within a certain band.
[0049] Implementation Example 1
[0050] FIG. 4 illustrates an example process of managing NTZ operation. To restrict / prevent the UE from initiating UL transmissions in the NTZ, the UE can proceed via one or more of the following operations to limit / restrict / prevent UL transmission.
[0051] With regards to (405) , and in some embodiments, the BS can broadcast via SIB signaling the location information of the NTZ, which can encompass / include, but is not limited to, longitude, latitude, and / or height details / information. The BS can broadcast the first threshold, which can include several metrics that include at one of, but not limited to, multiple height and / or distance thresholds. The BS can broadcast the second threshold, which can comprise at least one of, but not limited to, multiple duration and / or time deviation thresholds.
[0052] With regards to (410) , and in some embodiments, the UE can receive the NTZ location, along with at least one of the first or second thresholds. With regards to (415) , and in some embodiments, the UE can determine based on the received information, and using Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) positioning, whether a new event has occurred.
[0053] With regards to (420) , and in some embodiments, the network can define the new events, which can include / represent (or correspond to) the UE moving into or out of the NTZ. These events can be indicated via at least one of: RRC signaling, MAC CE, or DCI signaling. With regards to (440) , and in some embodiments, if no new trigger event occurs, then the UE has not moved in or out of the NTZ.
[0054] For example, at time t2, the trigger event X1 can occur when the UE enters a non-interfering area of the NTZ. This can occur if the UE detects that the related distance D1 is less than the distance threshold Td1 but greater than Td2, and that the time duration T1 exceeds the duration threshold TD1 for instance. Given that TD1 is set at 10 seconds, Td1 at 1 km, and Td2 at 100m, as an illustrative example, the UE can access the cell C covering the NTZ. Additionally, at time t3, the trigger event X2 can take place as the UE moves into the NTZ. This can be detected if the distance D2 is less than the threshold Td2, and the time duration T2 is more than the duration threshold TD2 for instance. For example, if Td2 is set at 100m and TD2 is 2 seconds, the UE can report its location to the BS and can proceed into the NTZ based on the BS's configuration. Alternatively, the UE can report event X2 and the UE’s location immediately upon (or in response to) entering the predefined NTZ broadcast area. This would be the case if, for example at time t1, the UE receives the NTZ information for cell C.
[0055] As another example, if the UE is a drone flying directly above the NTZ, it can determine new events related to entering or exiting the NTZ based on, but not limited to, its altitude and / or a set height threshold. If the drone's altitude is below the height threshold and / or the duration exceeds a specific threshold, the drone can report the event of moving into the NTZ. Conversely, if the drone's altitude is above the height threshold and the duration exceeds a certain threshold, it can report the event of moving out of the NTZ.
[0056] With regards to (425) , and in some embodiments, the UE can report new events and the UE’s location to the BS. With regards to (430) , and in some embodiments, the BS can transmit a specified configuration (s) to the UE upon receiving a report of a new event. With regards to (435) , and in some embodiments, the UE can apply the specified configuration (s) received from the BS and can enter the NTZ. The UE may perform (e.g., may be restricted to performing) UL transmission on specific frequency resources, or may be prevented from performing UL transmission, based on specific configuration (s) while in the NTZ for instance.
[0057] When the UE moves out of the NTZ, the UE can determine whether the new event of UE moving out of the NTZ has occurred, based on the related location and / or the duration. For example, if the UE detects that the related distance D1 is larger than the distance threshold Td1 and the time duration of T1 is larger than the duration threshold of TD1, the UE can move out of the NTZ and can report the new event to the BS. The UE may perform UL transmission on corresponding frequency resources, or may be prevented from performing UL transmission, based on the configurations from the BS, while in the NTZ for instance.
[0058] FIG. 5 illustrates an example process of managing NTZ operation.
[0059] Implementation Example 2
[0060] When the UE is a UAV, sidelink communications between the UAV clusters may be restricted to prevent collisions with other UEs. This is because the mechanism for broadcasting BRID is prohibited within the NTZ. To address this issue, one or more of the following steps may be adopted:
[0061] 1) The BS can broadcast the location information of the NTZ via SIB signaling, which can include, but is not limited to, the longitude, latitude, and / or height details / information of the NTZ. The BS can broadcast the first threshold, which can include / encompass, but is not limited to, at least one from a range / plurality of height and / or distance thresholds. The BS can broadcast the second threshold, which can include, but is not limited to, one or more duration and / or time deviation thresholds.
[0062] 2) The UAV can enter / access the cell and can report the broadcast remote identification (BRID) to BS (e.g., upon entering / accessing the cell) . The BRID may comprise at least one of: an identifier (ID) of the UAV / UE, a flight path of the UAV / UE, a trajectory of the UAV / UE, or a location of the UAV / UE.
[0063] Option 1: The UAV can report the BRID to BS once / after the UAV enters the cell, and based on the reception of NTZ location.
[0064] Option 2: The UAV can report the BRID to BS if the related distance between the UAV and NTZ is less than a distance threshold and / or the time duration is larger than a time threshold.
[0065] For example, a UAV can report its BRID to BS once the UAV moves into the NTZ broadcast area at t1 time. In another example, at t2 time, a UAV can report its BRID to BS if the UAV detects that the related distance D1 is less than a distance threshold Td1, such as where Td1 is 3km, 4km or 5km, and time duration of T1 is larger than a duration threshold of TD1, such as where TD1 is 1s, 3s or 5s.
[0066] FIG. 6 illustrates an example process of managing NTZ operation.
[0067] 3) The BS can broadcast the BRID of the UAV to UEs within the NTZ to prevent collisions among / between the UEs (e.g., and the UAV) . The BRID can include elements such as the UAV’s ID, the UAV’s location, and / or a flight path of the UAV.
[0068] 4) If the UE enters the NTZ, it can detect the UAV using the BRID (broadcasted by the BS) and can ensure that collisions are avoided.
[0069] 5) The BS can transmit specific configurations for the UEs based on reported new events.
[0070] 6) The UE may perform UL transmission on specific frequency resources, or may be prevented from performing UL transmission, based on the specific configurations.
[0071] 7) When the UE moves out of the NTZ, the UE can determine if the new event of the UE moving out of the NTZ has occurred, based on, but not limited to, the related location / distance and / or duration of the UE. For example, if the UE detects that the related distance D1 is larger than a distance threshold Td1 and the time duration T1 is larger than a duration threshold TD1, the UE has moved out of the NTZ and can report the new event to the BS. The UE can then perform UL transmission on the specific frequency resources, or be prevented from performing UL transmission, based on configurations from the BS.
[0072] When the UAV moves out of the NTZ, the UAV can determine whether the new event of the UAV moving out of the NTZ has occurred, based on, but not limited to, the related location and / or duration of the UAV. The UAV can then report the event of the UAV moving out of the NTZ to the BS.
[0073] Based on the reported event and / or the flight path of the UAV, the BS may not broadcast the BRID to UEs in the vicinity (e.g., because the risk of collisions with the UAV may be low) .
[0074] FIG. 7 illustrates a flow diagram of a method 700 for managing NTZ operation. The method 800 may be implemented using any one or more of the components and devices detailed herein in conjunction with FIGS. 1 to 6. The method 700 may be performed by a wireless communication node (e.g., a BS) , a core network and / or a wireless communication device (e.g., UE) , in some embodiments. In brief overview of FIG. 7, the method 700 may include a wireless communication node sending (e.g., broadcasting or transmitting) information about a NTZ to a wireless communication device. The wireless communication device may receive information about the NTZ from the wireless communication node. Additional, fewer, or different operations may be performed in the method 700 depending on the embodiment. At least one aspect of the operations is directed to a system, method, apparatus, or a computer-readable medium.
[0075] In some implementations, the method 700 may include each of a plurality of wireless communication nodes (e.g., base stations) sending / reporting information about one or more NTZ (s) associated with the respective wireless communication node, to a core network. The core network may receive the information about the NTZ (s) associated with each of the plurality of wireless communication nodes, from the respective wireless communication nodes. The information sent / reported / received about the NTZ (s) associated with each of the plurality of wireless communication nodes may comprise location information of the NTZ. The location information of the NTZ comprises at least one of: a position (e.g., longitude, latitude, height, coordinates) of at least one boundary point of the NTZ, a position of a center of the NTZ, or a position of a reference point relative to the NTZ. The core network may determine a NTZ broadcast area according to the information about one or more NTZ (s) associated with the respective wireless communication node.
[0076] In some embodiments, the method 700 may include the core network determining a NTZ broadcast area. The core network may determine a NTZ broadcast area without receiving or relying on information received from one or more BSs. For instance, the core network may have access to location information of one or more NTZs (e.g., without receiving these from the BSs) . One or more network functions or network nodes of the core network may determine the NTZ broadcast area. The core network may determine a NTZ broadcast area in response to the presence of a NTZ. The core network may determine a NTZ broadcast area according to location information about one or more NTZ (s) . The NTZ broadcast area may include a cell or cellular coverage region of each base station, that overlaps at least partially with a NTZ. The NTZ broadcast area can comprise one or more such cells, and / or can comprises an area that includes one or more such wireless communication nodes, or that includes at least one absolute location / position (e.g., a boundary point or corner of the area) that each includes at least one of a longitude, a latitude, or a height. This determination of the NTZ broadcast area can ensure that BSs in such a NTZ broadcast area associated with specific NTZs (such as those with sensitive equipment or operations) , are configured to control UEs within the BSs’ cells, to protect the NTZs from potential interference caused by unwanted wireless transmissions from the UEs.
[0077] In some embodiments, the method 700 may include the wireless communication node receiving an indication of the NTZ broadcast area, and / or the information about the NTZ, from the core network. The wireless communication node may receive this indication via at least one of: a system information block (SIB) signaling, a radio resource control (RRC) signaling, or other high layer signaling. The indication that the wireless communication node receives may allow for coordination between the core network and the wireless communication node, to manage the operations of UEs near an NTZ (e.g., in the NTZ broadcast region proximate to the NTZ) .
[0078] In some implementations, the method 700 may include the wireless communication node receiving from the core network, a message to indicate that the wireless communication node (e.g., when located in the NTZ broadcast area) is to send the information about the NTZ to the wireless communication device. The wireless communication node may receive the message from the core network, responsive to the wireless communication node being in the NTZ broadcast area and / or serving a cell that at least partially covers a NTZ. The message may serve as a directive or trigger, prompting the wireless communication node to manage the operations of UEs entering the wireless communication node’s cell to operate in a certain way. For example, a UE receiving the message may report location information of the UE to the wireless communication node (e.g., if the location of the UE meets certain threshold requirements on distance / location (e.g., relative to the NTZ) and / or time (e.g., duration of the UE while meeting the distance / location threshold requirement. As another example, the UE may be restricted / prevented from UL transmission if the UE detects that the UE has entered the NTZ.
[0079] With regards to (705) , and in some embodiments, the wireless communication node can send information about a NTZ to a wireless communication device. For example, the wireless communication node can, responsive to the wireless communication node being in the NTZ broadcast area, send a broadcast message to one or more wireless communication devices (e.g., UEs) within the cell or coverage region of the wireless communication node. The information about the NTZ of the wireless communication node can comprise at least one of: location information of the NTZ, first threshold information; or second threshold information. The location information of the NTZ can comprises at least one of: a position (e.g., longitude, latitude, height, coordinates) of at least one boundary point of the NTZ, a position of a center of the NTZ, or a position of a reference point relative to the NTZ. The first threshold information can include at least a threshold A pertaining to at least one of distance or height. The second threshold information can include at least a threshold T1 pertaining to time.
[0080] The wireless communication node can send the information about the NTZ via at least one of: a system information block (SIB) signaling, a radio resource control (RRC) signaling, or other high layer signaling. The wireless communication node may be configured to update the NTZ information based on changes in the system and / or network conditions affecting the size / scope of the NTZ. The updates can ensure that the wireless communication devices remain aware of the most current boundaries and parameters of an NTZ.
[0081] In some implementations, the method 700 may include the wireless communication node receiving from the first wireless communication device, information of the first wireless communication device after or responsive to the wireless communication device accessing a cell of the wireless communication node. The wireless communication node may send a request to the first wireless communication device (e.g., as part of a handshaking or connection procedure) , to send information of the first wireless communication device to the wireless communication node. The information may include location / flight / trajectory information of the first wireless communication device, a BRID of the first wireless communication device, and / or an identification of the first wireless communication device.
[0082] In some implementations, the method 700 may include the wireless communication node receiving from the first wireless communication device, the information of the first wireless communication device after accessing the cell of the wireless communication node, when the first wireless communication device is located within a region defined by at least the threshold A, for a duration larger than the threshold T1. By using such conditions to trigger the first wireless communication device to send the information to the wireless communication node, this can reduce transmission bandwidth usage as compared to not applying any condition.
[0083] In some implementations, the method 700 may include the wireless communication node sending to the first wireless communication device, a definition or specification of at least one of a first trigger event, a second trigger event or a third trigger event, via at least one of: a medium access control (MAC) signaling, a radio resource control (RRC) signaling, a system information block (SIB) signaling, or other high layer signaling. The trigger events may be used for dictating specific actions or responses from the first wireless communication device (e.g., switching frequency bands for UL transmissions, or providing feedback / updates to the wireless communication node on the wireless communication device’s location / trajectory / flight information) .
[0084] In some embodiments, the method 700 may include the wireless communication node receiving from the first wireless communication device, an indication associated with a first trigger event, when the first wireless communication device is located within a region defined by at least the threshold A, for a duration larger than the threshold T1. For instance, when the first wireless communication device moves into or is located within the region defined by the threshold A, for a duration larger than the threshold T1, the first wireless communication device may determine that it has met a condition specified by the first trigger event. According to the instructions specified for the first trigger event, the first wireless communication device may report the first trigger event and / or the location and / or BRID of the first wireless communication device upon (or in response to) entering the region of the NTZ broadcast area defined by the threshold A.
[0085] In some embodiments, the method 700 may include the wireless communication node sending to the first wireless communication device, a first configuration in response to the first trigger event. The first configuration can cause the first wireless communication to operate according to the first configuration. For example, the first configuration can cause the first wireless communication device to report (e.g., report immediately, report once, or report periodically) the location and / or BRID of the first wireless communication device to the wireless communication node.
[0086] In certain embodiments, the method 700 may include the wireless communication node receiving from the first wireless communication device, an indication associated with a second trigger event, when the first wireless communication device is located within a region defined by at least a threshold B, for a duration larger than a threshold T2. For instance, when the first wireless communication device moves into or is located within the region defined by the threshold B, for a duration larger than the threshold T3, the first wireless communication device may determine that it has met a condition specified by the second trigger event (e.g., the first wireless communication device may determine that it has entered the NTZ) . According to the instructions specified for the second trigger event, the first wireless communication device may report the second trigger event and / or the location and / or BRID of the first wireless communication device upon (or in response to) entering the NTZ / region.
[0087] In certain embodiments, the method 700 may include the wireless communication node sending to the first wireless communication device, a second configuration in response to the second trigger event. The second configuration can cause the first wireless communication to operate according to the second configuration. For example, the second configuration can cause the first wireless communication device to cease any UL transmission, or to limit UL transmission to one or more specific frequencies or frequency bands (e.g., while in the NTZ) .
[0088] In certain implementations, the method 700 may include the wireless communication node receiving from the first wireless communication device, an indication associated with a third trigger event, when the first wireless communication device is located beyond a region defined by a threshold C, for a duration larger than the threshold T1 or a threshold T3. For instance, when the first wireless communication device moves into or is located within the region defined by the threshold C, for a duration larger than the threshold T3 / T1, the first wireless communication device may determine that it has met a condition specified by the third trigger event (e.g., the first wireless communication device may determine that it has moved out of the NTZ) . According to the instructions specified for the third trigger event, the first wireless communication device may report the third trigger event and / or the location and / or BRID of the first wireless communication device upon (or in response to) leaving the NTZ / region.
[0089] At least one of the indication associated with the first trigger event, the indication associated with the second trigger event, or the indication associated with the third trigger event, can include at least one of: an identifier and / or BRID of the first wireless communication device, a path or trajectory of the first wireless communication device, or a corresponding position of the first wireless communication device.
[0090] In some implementations, the method 700 may include the wireless communication node sending to the first wireless communication device, a third configuration in response to the third trigger event. The third configuration can cause the first wireless communication to operate according to the third configuration. For example, the third configuration can cause the first wireless communication device to report (e.g., report immediately, report once, or report periodically) the location and / or BRID of the first wireless communication device to the wireless communication node. At least one of the first configuration, the second configuration, or the third configuration, can configure or cause the first wireless communication to not perform transmission, or to perform transmission using a specific frequency resource.
[0091] In some implementations, the method 700 may include the wireless communication node sending, in response to the first, second or third trigger event, at least one of the identifier of the first wireless communication device, the path or trajectory of the first wireless communication device, or the corresponding position of the first wireless communication device, to at least one other wireless communication device via at least one of: a system information block (SIB) signaling, a radio resource control (RRC) signaling, or other high layer signaling. In some scenarios, the wireless communication node may, depending on the occurrence of specific trigger event (s) , share some or all of such information with other wireless communication devices located in the NTZ and / or specific / associated region (s) described above.
