Abstract
Description
Battery cells and battery packs and electric two-wheelers containing such battery cells
[0001] The present invention relates to a battery cell, a battery pack including the battery cell, and an electric two-wheeled vehicle.
[0002] This application claims priority to Korean Patent Application No. 10-2023-0131972, filed on October 4, 2023, and all contents disclosed in the specification and drawings of the said application are incorporated by reference into this application.
[0003] Secondary batteries, which boast high applicability across a wide range of product categories and electrical properties such as high energy density, are widely used not only in portable devices but also in electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) powered by electrical power sources. These secondary batteries not only offer the primary advantage of dramatically reducing fossil fuel use but also produce no byproducts from energy use, attracting attention as a new energy source for environmental friendliness and energy efficiency.
[0004] Depending on the charge / discharge capacity required by an electric vehicle (EV) or hybrid electric vehicle (HEV), multiple battery cells are connected in series or parallel to form a battery pack. Typically, a battery module containing at least one battery cell is first constructed, and then other components are added to form a battery pack or battery rack using this at least one battery module. Recently, battery packs in the cell-to-pack form, where multiple battery cells are housed directly in a pack housing, are also being manufactured.
[0005] Meanwhile, conventional battery cells may include an outer covering material on the outside of the battery housing. When subjected to repeated high and low temperature conditions during temperature cycle testing, the outer covering material, often made of film or other materials, may shrink due to its physical properties, exposing the upper portion of the battery cell. This increases the risk of short circuits in battery packs containing a large number of battery cells.
[0006] In particular, when a washer is provided on the upper part of the battery housing to supplement the electrical insulation, as the outer material shrinks, the area of the washer covered by the outer material gradually decreases, causing the washer to move, increasing the risk of a short circuit occurring in the battery pack.
[0007] Therefore, there is a need to develop a battery cell that can prevent the outer material from shrinking and exposing the upper part of the battery cell even when the battery cell is repeatedly exposed to high / low temperature conditions.
[0008] In particular, there is a need to develop a battery cell that can prevent a washer from moving by increasing the adhesive force or frictional force between the washer and the outer material, thereby suppressing a short circuit in the battery pack.
[0009] Accordingly, the present invention is intended to solve the problems described above, and provides a battery cell that can ensure safety and reliability by preventing the upper portion of the battery cell from being exposed even when the battery cell is repeatedly exposed to high / low temperature conditions.
[0010] Another problem that the present invention seeks to solve is to provide a battery pack including such a battery cell.
[0011] However, the problems to be solved by the present invention are not limited to the problems described above, and other problems not mentioned can be clearly understood by those skilled in the art from the description of the invention described below.

[0013] The above adhesive member may be provided between the washer and the exterior material.
[0014] The above washer includes a first portion to which the outer material is bonded, and a second portion which is a remaining area excluding the first portion, and the bonding member may be provided only in the first portion.
[0015] The above adhesive member may be provided on the outer surface of the exterior material.
[0016] The above adhesive member may be composed of a tape having an adhesive surface formed on one side.
[0017] The above adhesive member may be configured in a ring shape with a hole formed in the center.
[0018] The above battery housing may have a crimping portion having a shape that is bent inward along the radial direction of the electrode assembly from the upper periphery of the battery housing.
[0019] The above washer may be placed on the upper surface of the above crimping portion.
[0020] In addition, a battery pack according to one embodiment of the present invention includes a plurality of battery cells according to one embodiment of the present invention as described above.
[0021] And, an electric two-wheeled vehicle according to one embodiment of the present invention includes a battery pack according to one embodiment of the present invention as described above.
[0022] Meanwhile, the present invention also provides a method for manufacturing such a battery cell.
[0023] A method for manufacturing a battery cell of the present invention comprises: a method for manufacturing a battery cell comprising: an electrode assembly; a battery housing having an opening at one side for accommodating the electrode assembly; and a washer disposed on the opening side of the battery housing, the method comprising: a step of mounting the washer on an upper surface of the battery housing; a step of positioning an adhesive member on at least a portion of an outer surface of the washer; and a step of wrapping the battery housing with an outer material so as to cover at least a portion of the battery housing and the washer.
[0024] The above adhesive material is composed of a liquid and can be applied to the outer surface of the washer.
[0025] Here, a step of covering a portion of the washer before applying the adhesive member may be further included.
[0026] As another example, the adhesive member may be provided as an adhesive surface provided on one surface of the washer.
[0027] As another example, the adhesive member may be provided as an adhesive surface provided on one surface of the exterior material.
[0028] Another method for manufacturing a battery cell of the present invention comprises a method for manufacturing a battery cell comprising an electrode assembly, a battery housing having an opening on one side for accommodating the electrode assembly, and a washer disposed on the opening side of the battery housing, the method comprising: mounting the washer on an upper surface of the battery housing; wrapping the battery housing with an outer material so as to cover at least a portion of the battery housing and the washer; and positioning an adhesive member on an outer edge of the outer material.
[0029] Here, the adhesive member may be composed of a tape having an adhesive surface formed on one side.

[0051] Furthermore, the present invention includes various embodiments. For each embodiment, redundant descriptions of substantially identical or similar components will be omitted, and the differences will be described.
[0052] Meanwhile, in the present invention, terms indicating directions such as up, down, left, right, front, and back may be used, but it is obvious to those skilled in the art that these terms are only for convenience of explanation and may vary depending on the location of the target object or the location of the observer.
[0053] For convenience of explanation, the direction along the longitudinal direction of the winding axis of the electrode assembly wound in the form of a jellyroll is referred to as the axial direction in this specification. The direction surrounding the winding axis is referred to as the circumferential direction. The direction approaching or moving away from the winding axis is referred to as the radial direction.
[0054] Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a battery cell according to an embodiment of the present invention, Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional perspective view of a battery cell according to an embodiment of the present invention, and Fig. 3 is a plan view of a battery cell according to an embodiment of the present invention. In addition, Fig. 4 is a plan view of a battery cell according to an embodiment of the present invention, which is a comparative example and is different from the battery cell according to an embodiment of the present invention in that an adhesive member is not provided.
[0055] First, referring to FIGS. 1 to 3, a battery cell (1) according to one embodiment of the present invention includes an electrode assembly (10), a battery housing (20), a washer (30), an outer material (40), and an adhesive member (50). As illustrated, the battery cell (1) may be a cylindrical battery cell.
[0056] Referring to FIG. 2, an electrode assembly (10) may be accommodated in a battery housing (20). The electrode assembly (10) may include a first electrode having a first polarity, a second electrode having a second polarity, and a separator interposed between the first electrode and the second electrode. The electrode assembly (10) may have a jelly-roll structure. That is, the electrode assembly (10) may be manufactured by stacking a first electrode and a second electrode having a sheet shape at least once with a separator interposed therebetween, and winding the stacked body in one direction based on an axial direction penetrating the winding hole (H1). In this case, an additional separator may be provided on the outer peripheral surface of the electrode assembly (10) for insulation from the battery housing (20). Any jelly-roll structure known in the art may be applied to the present invention without limitation. The first electrode is an anode or a cathode, and the second electrode corresponds to an electrode having a polarity opposite to that of the first electrode.
[0057] The first electrode may include a first electrode current collector and a first electrode active material applied on one or both surfaces of the first electrode current collector. The first electrode may have a non-coated portion (first non-coated portion) formed by not coating the electrode active material on the upper end thereof. That is, a non-coated portion (first non-coated portion) on which the first electrode active material is not applied may exist on one end of the first electrode current collector in the width direction (in the direction parallel to the Z-axis). The non-coated portion may function as a first electrode tab (11) in itself. The first electrode tab (11) may be provided on an upper portion in the height direction (in the direction parallel to the Z-axis) of the electrode assembly (10) accommodated in the battery housing (20). That is, the first electrode current collector includes a first non-coated portion on a long side end thereof on which an active material layer is not coated and a separator is exposed to the outside, and at least a portion of the first non-coated portion may be used as an electrode tab in itself. The first electrode tab (11) may be, for example, a positive electrode tab.
[0058] The second electrode may include a second electrode current collector and a second electrode active material applied on one or both surfaces of the second electrode current collector. The second electrode may have a non-coated portion (second non-coated portion) formed by not coating the electrode active material on the lower portion thereof. That is, a non-coated portion on which the second electrode active material is not applied may exist on the other end of the second electrode current collector in the width direction (in the direction parallel to the Z-axis). The non-coated portion may function as a second electrode tab (12) in and of itself. The second electrode tab (12) may be provided on the lower portion in the height direction (in the direction parallel to the Z-axis) of the electrode assembly (10) accommodated in the battery housing (20). That is, the second electrode current collector includes a second non-coated portion on the long side of which an active material layer is not coated and a separator is exposed to the outside, and at least a portion of the second non-coated portion may be used as an electrode tab in and of itself. The second electrode tab (12) may be, for example, a negative electrode tab.
[0059] The first electrode tab (11) and the second electrode tab (12) may extend in opposite directions along the height direction (parallel to the Z-axis) of the battery cell (1). For example, as in the embodiment illustrated in FIG. 2, the first electrode tab (11) may extend toward an opening formed at the top of the battery housing (20), and the second electrode tab (12) may extend toward a closing portion formed at the bottom of the battery housing (20).
[0060] Referring to FIGS. 1 to 3, the battery housing (20) may be provided as a generally cylindrical receiver. The battery housing (20) may be provided with an opening on one side. The battery housing (20) may accommodate an electrode assembly (10) through the opening formed on one side, and may also accommodate an electrolyte. The side wall portion of the battery housing (20) and the closed portion formed on the opposite side of the open portion may be formed integrally, or may be formed separately and joined to each other by welding or the like.
[0061] The battery housing (20) may be made of a conductive metal material. The battery housing (20) may be electrically connected to the second electrode tab (12) of the electrode assembly (10). Therefore, the battery housing (20) may have the same second polarity as the second electrode tab (12). The electrical connection between the electrode assembly (10) and the battery housing (20) may be made, for example, through the second current collector (90).
[0062] Meanwhile, referring to FIGS. 1 to 3, a battery cell (1) according to an embodiment of the present invention may further include a top cap (60). The top cap (60) may cover an upper opening of a battery housing (20). The top cap (60) may be made of a conductive metal material. The top cap (60) may be electrically connected to the first electrode tab (11) of the electrode assembly (10) and may be configured to be electrically insulated from the battery housing (20). Accordingly, the top cap (60) has the same first polarity as the first electrode tab (11) of the electrode assembly (10) and may function as a first electrode terminal of the battery cell (1) of the present invention. The electrical connection between the first electrode tab (11) and the top cap (60) may be made, for example, by a first current collector (80).
[0063] The top cap (60) may have a protrusion (61) formed to protrude upward from approximately its center. The protrusion (61) may protrude upwardly higher than the upper surface of the washer (30) through the washer hole (H2) of the washer (30) so as to facilitate contact with electrical connection components such as bus bars. However, the present invention is not limited thereto, and the top cap (60) may be formed to be flat overall. In addition, even when the top cap (60) has the protrusion (61), the upper surface of the protrusion (61) may be positioned at approximately the same height as or lower than the upper surface of the washer (30).
[0064] The battery housing (20) may include a beading portion (21). The beading portion (21) may be formed adjacent to the opening side of the battery housing (20). The beading portion (21) may have a shape that is pressed along the outer circumference of the battery housing (20). Accordingly, the beading portion (21) has a shape that is recessed to a predetermined depth in the radial direction from the outer circumference of the battery housing (20) and may extend along the circumference of the battery housing (20). The beading portion (21) prevents the electrode assembly (10) having a size corresponding to the width of the battery housing (20) from coming out through the upper opening of the battery housing (20) and may function as a support portion on which the top cap (60) is seated.
[0065] The battery housing (20) may include a crimping portion (22). The crimping portion (22) may be formed on the open side of the battery housing (20). The crimping portion (22) may have a shape that is bent inwardly along the radial direction of the electrode assembly (10) from the upper periphery of the battery housing (20). When the battery housing (20) is provided with a beading portion (21), the crimping portion (22) may be formed on the upper portion of the beading portion (21). The crimping portion (22) may extend from the beading portion (21) and may have a shape that is extended and bent so as to surround the outer circumference of the top cap (60) disposed on the beading portion (21) and a portion of the upper surface of the top cap (60). The upper end of the crimping portion (22) may extend inwardly by a predetermined distance along the radial direction of the battery cell (1) and may have a shape that surrounds a portion of the upper surface of the top cap (60). In this way, the crimping part (22) can fix the periphery of the upper surface of the top cap (60). According to the above-described embodiment of the present invention, the crimping part (22) fixes the top cap (60), thereby preventing the top cap (60) from being detached upward.
[0066] Meanwhile, a gasket (G) may be interposed between the top cap (60) and the crimping portion (22) of the battery housing (20) to seal the upper opening of the battery housing (20) and electrically insulate between the battery housing (20) and the top cap (60). The gasket (G) may include a material having insulating properties and elasticity. The gasket (G) may include, for example, a polymer resin. The gasket (G) may be bent together along the bent shape of the crimping portion (22) of the battery housing (20). When the battery housing (20) has a beading portion (21), the gasket (G) may be interposed between the upper surface of the beading portion (21) and the upper end of the crimping portion (22).
[0067] In addition, the battery cell (1) according to one embodiment of the present invention may include a vent (70) for reducing internal pressure. The vent (70) may be formed of a thin conductive plate. A downward recessed portion may be formed in the central portion of the vent (70), and a plurality of notches having different depths may be formed in the upper and lower bend portions of the central portion.
[0068] Above, the structure of a battery cell (1) has been described in detail with an example, but the present invention is not limited to the structure of the battery cell (1). The present invention is characterized by a battery cell including an adhesive member and a method for manufacturing the same.
[0069] Referring to FIGS. 1 to 3, a washer (30) may be placed on the opening side of the battery housing (20). Specifically, the washer (30) may be mounted on the upper end of the battery housing (20). When a crimping portion (22) is formed on the upper end of the battery housing (20), the washer (30) may be mounted on the upper surface of the crimping portion (22). The washer (30) may have, for example, an approximately disc shape with a hole formed approximately at its center. That is, the washer (30) may be an approximately ring shape with a washer hole (H2) formed approximately at its center. The washer (30) may protect the battery cell (1) from external impact and supplement the mechanical strength of members mounted on the upper end of the battery cell (1).
[0070] The washer (30) can be fixed to the upper surface of the battery housing (20) in various ways. For example, during the crimping process of the battery housing (20), the outer surface of the washer (30) can be fixed together, or when covering the outer surface of the battery housing (20) with an outer material (40), a heat-shrinkable tube can be used and the outer surface of the washer (30) can be fixed together by shrinking it.
[0071] The washer (30) may be configured to be electrically insulated from the top cap (60) and the battery housing (20). The top cap (60) is exposed through a washer hole (H2) formed at the center of the washer (30), and the washer (30) and the top cap (60) may be spaced apart from each other. When the top cap (60) has a protrusion (61), the protrusion (61) may be exposed through the washer hole (H2).
[0072] According to the above-described embodiment of the present invention, the washer (30) can basically play a role in supplementing the electrical insulation state. Specifically, the washer (30) can prevent an internal short circuit from occurring when the top cap (60) as the first electrode terminal comes into contact with the battery housing (20) as the second electrode terminal.
[0073] The outer material (40) may be configured to surround the outer surface of the battery cell (1). The outer material (40) may be configured to cover at least a portion of the battery housing (20) and the washer (30). For example, the outer material (40) may be configured to cover at least a portion of the side surface of the battery housing (20) and the upper surface of the washer (30). The outer material (40) may be provided as a sheet member having a substantially rectangular shape and configured to surround the outer surface of the battery housing (20) while sealing the upper portion of the washer (30). The outer material (40) may be configured to cover up to the lower surface of the battery housing (20). The outer material (40) may be configured as a heat-shrinkable tube having a substantially cylindrical shape, such that the battery housing (20) may be inserted into the outer material (40) so that the outer material (40) surrounds the battery housing (20). In this way, the outer surface of the battery housing (20) and the upper part of the washer (30) can be wrapped with the outer material (40) and then sealed by applying a predetermined amount of heat. The outer material (40) can protect the accessories of the battery cell (1), such as the battery housing (20).
[0074] Meanwhile, a battery cell (1) according to one embodiment of the present invention may include an adhesive member (50). The adhesive member (50) may be provided on at least one side of the outer material (40). The adhesive member (50) may be configured to strengthen the adhesive force between the outer material (40) and the washer (30). According to the above-described embodiment of the present invention, the adhesive member (50) may be adhered to the outer material (40) to fix the position of the washer (30).
[0075] If, as in the comparative example illustrated in FIG. 4, an adhesive material is not provided on at least one surface of the outer covering (40), when the battery cell (1') is repeatedly exposed to high / low temperature conditions, the outer covering (40) may shrink, gradually reducing the area of the washer (30) covered by the outer covering (40), and gradually increasing the area of the exposed washer (30) (see arrow direction). In this case, there is a risk that the washer (30) may move, causing a short circuit.
[0076] On the other hand, as in the embodiment illustrated in FIG. 3, when an adhesive member (50) is provided on at least one surface of the outer material (40), the adhesive force or frictional force between the washer (30) and the outer material (40) increases, so that the outer material (40) stably covers the washer (30), thereby ensuring the safety of the battery cell (1).
[0077] In addition, according to the above-described embodiment of the present invention, the washer (30) and the outer material (40) can be bonded to each other with only a simple process of applying a predetermined pressure due to the adhesive component of the adhesive member (50), so it can be advantageous in terms of process efficiency.
[0078]
[0079] FIG. 5 is a cross-sectional view of a portion of a battery cell according to one embodiment of the present invention, FIG. 6 is a drawing showing a manufacturing process of a battery cell according to one embodiment of the present invention, and FIG. 7 is a drawing showing another manufacturing process of a battery cell according to one embodiment of the present invention.
[0080] According to one embodiment of the present invention, the adhesive member (50) may be provided between the washer (30) and the outer covering (40). That is, the adhesive member (50) may be provided on the inner surface of the outer covering (40). The adhesive member (50) may be provided on at least a portion of the washer (30). Specifically, the washer (30) includes a first portion (31) to which the outer covering (40) is adhered, and a second portion (32) which is the remaining area excluding the first portion (31), and the adhesive member (50) may be provided only on the first portion (31). The first portion (31) may be provided along the outer perimeter of the washer (30). At this time, the second portion (32) may include the protrusion (61) of the top cap (60). As a result, the protrusion (61) serving as the first electrode may not be covered by the outer covering (40).
[0081] Referring to Fig. 6, first, as shown in Fig. 6(a), a washer (30) can be mounted on the opening side of the battery housing (20), for example, on the upper surface of the battery housing (20). Next, as shown in Fig. 6(b), an adhesive member (50) can be applied to at least a portion of the outer surface of the washer (30). At this time, the adhesive member (50) can include an adhesive configured in a gel or liquid form. Then, as shown in Fig. 6(c), an outer material (40) can be wrapped around the battery housing (20) so as to cover the outer surface of the battery housing (20) and at least a portion of the washer (30). In this state, by applying a predetermined amount of heat to the outer material (40), the outer material (40) can be adhered to the battery housing (20) and the washer (30) by the adhesive member (50).
[0082] According to the above-described embodiment of the present invention, even if the battery cell (1) is repeatedly exposed to high / low temperatures and the outer material (40) shrinks, the outer material (40) is prevented from being peeled off by the adhesive member (50), thereby preventing the washer (30) from being exposed to the outside. As a result, the risk of a short circuit occurring is prevented, thereby ensuring the safety of the battery cell (1).
[0083] Meanwhile, according to one embodiment of the present invention, the adhesive material (50) may be composed of a liquid and applied to the outer surface of the washer (30). Specifically, referring to FIG. 7, first, as shown in FIG. 7(a), the washer (30) may be mounted on the opening side of the battery housing (20), for example, on the upper surface of the battery housing (20). Next, as shown in FIG. 7(b), a portion of the washer (30) may be covered before applying the adhesive material (50). The covered portion is hatched in the drawing. That is, the outer material (40) may cover the second portion (32) of the washer (30) to which it is not adhered.
[0084] Next, as shown in Fig. 7(c), an adhesive material (50) can be applied to the washer (30). At this time, the adhesive material (50) can be applied to the washer (30) using a spray or the like. Even if the adhesive material (50) is evenly applied while covering the second portion (32), the adhesive material (50) can be applied only to the first portion (31), so the application work is convenient and the adhesive material (50) can be prevented from being applied to a part of the top cap (60) that functions as the first electrode terminal.
[0085] Next, as shown in Fig. 7(d), an outer material (40) can be wrapped around the battery housing (20) to cover at least a portion of the outer surface of the battery housing (20) and the washer (30).
[0086] According to the above-described embodiment of the present invention, it is possible to fundamentally prevent the adhesive material (50) from being applied to a portion of the top cap (60) that functions as a first electrode terminal.
