Description

[0001] A SPINE AND EYE SAFETY SMART CARE SYSTEM AND METHOD THEREOF

[0002] FIELD OF THE INVENTION

[0003] The present disclosure pertains to the field of health and ergonomics, specifically to a spine and eye safety smart care system and associated methods designed to enhance the wellbeing of students and working professionals, especially during prolonged periods of reading, writing, or digital device usage.

[0004] BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

[0005] In the evolving academic and professional spheres, reading and writing remain pivotal activities for school children, college students, and working professionals alike. With the advent of technological advancements, digital devices have become an indispensable tool for many, significantly changing the way information is consumed and processed. However, this reliance on technology has posed various health challenges, particularly concerning eye and spine health.

[0006] When engaging in prolonged reading, writing, or digital screen viewing, it is imperative to ensure that the eyes remain comfortable, especially given the proximity to the material or screen. Equally crucial is the posture adopted during these activities. The manner in which individuals sit, the angle and distance at which a book or digital device is held, and the overall physical posture can dramatically influence the comfort and health of their visual system and spine. The correct posture can ensure not only physical ease but also a more focused and absorbing cognitive experience.

[0007] Recent trends and observations indicate a worrisome escalation in health challenges faced by the younger generation. A growing number of school-going children are experiencing vision issues at an increasingly younger age. This is largely attributed to the extended use of digital devices and books without adhering to safe viewing distances. Additionally, the sedentary lifestyles, characterized by extended periods of sitting adopted by both students and working professionals, exacerbate these health challenges. Such behaviors, combined with improper postures, lead to heightened stress on the eyes and body. Consequently, this can manifest in a myriad of health issues, including but not limited to, deteriorating eyesight, back pain, neck pain, obesity, and even severe conditions like blood clotting, heart attacks, and an elevated risk of bowel cancer. It has become clear that proactive measures are needed to combat these looming health risks. Ensuring the correct sitting posture and encouraging regular breaks from prolonged sitting are two such preventive strategies. Recognizing this need, the proposed smart care system seeks to offer a solution. This system is designed to actively monitor and alert users to maintain a safe distance from their reading or viewing material and to adopt correct postures, ensuring the safety of their eyes, spine, and neck.

[0008] The potential impact and relevance of such a system are underscored by recent statistics. As of 2022, India alone has over 265 million students. Furthermore, global projections estimate that by 2023, there will be around 66 million full-time working professionals in the information and communication technology sectors worldwide. Given this vast user base, a system that safeguards the eyes and spine of digital device users is not just beneficial but imperative in the modern age.

[0009] In view of the foregoing discussion, it is portrayed that there is a need to have aspine and eye safety smart care system and method for students and working professionals.

[0010] SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

[0011] The present disclosure seeks to provide a spine and eye safety smart care system and method for students and working professionals. In the current scenario of the digital world, people are spending a lot of time in front of digital screens. After the COVID- 19 pandemic, many corporate companies are adopting work from home culture due to which many working professionals are spending so many hours staring at their digital screens. Even small kids and school children are facing these eye strain problems. This can cause eye discomfort, eye strain, dry eyes, vision blurs, and headache and sometimes it may even cause vision problems like farsightedness, astigmatism, presbyopia, etc. Research shows that 50% to 90% of the people working with computers or digital screens face these symptoms. All these various symptoms come under one umbrella called Computer Vision Syndrome or Digital Eye Strain. This is due to not maintaining a healthy distance between the eyes and the digital devices while working for an extended period of time without even blinking their eyes. The proposed device will monitor the eye safety distance and alert the user if a healthy distance is not maintained for long durations. In addition to the digital eye strain, people working with digital systems for long hours also face neck, spine, and back problems due to improper sitting posture. Incorrect sitting postures for long hours may result in an increased risk of developing back pain, bowel cancer, blood clotting, heart attack, etc. The proposed system will also monitor the sitting posture of the user and it alerts through voice announcement if the poor sitting posture is detected for prolonged duration. A spine and eye safety smart care method, the method comprises: a) detecting and monitoring a distance between eyes of a user and a digital device or reading material upon attaching a first set of infrared (IR) proximity sensors (102A), enhanced with Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) technology, to a device / user’s head; b) detecting and monitoring a spine position with augmented precision by deploying a second set of IR sensors (104 A) and a first set of pressure sensors (104B) to a back-pad, wherein the posture-monitoring back-pad module (104) has integrated analytics to differentiate between various posture types and determine potential harmful postures based on extended duration; c) monitoring a user's sitting posture by deploying a second set of pressure sensors (106A) to a plurality of positions to the seat-pad, equipped with real-time data mapping capabilities to determine accurate weight distributions and deviations from ideal sitting postures;d) determining a safe distance between the eyes of the user and the digital device or reading material and generating an alert notification upon measuring a time duration of abnormal sitting posture and eye-to-device distance of the user greater than a threshold time duration to alert the user through a buzzer or voice message using a controller (108A); e) allowing multiple user profiles for personalized monitoring and alerts via an expandable interface (110); and f) uploading and accessing data remotely and viewing or receiving a personalized recommendation for ergonomic improvements through a cloud server (112).

10. The method as claimed in claim 9, wherein monitoring user-eye distance and posture using the controller, comprising the steps of: activating a first set of infrared (IR) proximity sensors (102 A) enhanced with Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) technology and emitting infrared light and LIDAR laser pulses towards a digital device or reading material the user is interacting with; collecting reflected signals from both the infrared and LIDAR sources and processing the reflected signals to determine the precise distance between the user's eyes and the digital device or reading material; activating a second set of IR sensors (104A) using the same controller and emitting infrared light towards the user's back and collecting reflected signals from the IR sensors; interpreting the curve and alignment of the user's spine based on the reflected signals and measuring pressure exerted on different parts of a back pad using a first set of pressure sensors (104B); and analyzing the pressure data to determine user weight distribution refining the interpretation of the spine's posture monitoring the duration of each identified posture and detecting any potentially harmful posture based on the analyzed data.
