Abstract

Embodiments of the present disclosure relate to sidelink (SL) congestion control. In an aspect, a terminal device obtains a sidelink congestion control configuration comprising at least one criterion for performing either discarding a protocol data unit, PDU, set or adapting at least one transmission parameter for the PDU set. The at least one criterion is related to a PDU set importance, PSI. The terminal device, based on detecting sidelink congestion, determines, based on the at least one criterion and based on a PSI of the PDU set, whether to perform either i) discarding at least part of the PDU set or ii) adapting of the at least one transmission parameter for the PDU set.

[0058] In legacy SL communication, CBR based congestion control was introduced, and it tries to control and / or limit the usage of SL resources on per SL RB or LCH basis. All the data or PDUs in one SL RB or LCH may be treated in the same way for determining the transmission parameters if the measured CBR is higher than a configured threshold or within a configured range. For XR traffic, PSI has been introduced and is used to indicate the relative importance of a PDU set compared with other PDU sets within the same QoS flow of which all the PDU sets will be mapped to the same SL RB or LCH. However, the current SL congestion control mechanism (based on CBR) without any enhancement cannot take PSI of XR traffic into account when SL resource pool is congested.

[0059] Embodiments of the present disclosure propose a solution to enable SL congestion control by taking into account PSI and other information of XR traffic. In particular, some example embodiments of the present disclosure focus on enhancement of SL congestion control (hereafter may also be referred to as SL CC) mechanism by taking into account XR traffic characteristics to allow a SL transmitting UE to reduce and / or control the congestion in SL resource pool.

[0060] FIG. 1 illustrates an example network environment 100 in which example embodiments of the present disclosure may be implemented. In the example of FIG. 1, the  network environment 100, which may be a part of a communication network, includes a terminal device 102, a terminal device 104 and a network device 106.

[0061] As illustrated in FIG. 1, the terminal device 102 may be referred to as a user equipment 102 or a UE 102. The terminal device 104 may also be referred to as a user equipment 104 or a UE 104. The network device 106 may be referred to as a base station 106 or a gNB 106. The network device 106 may communicate with the terminal device 102 and terminal device 104. The terminal device 102 and the terminal device 104 may perform SL communication between them directly. It is to be understood that there may be more terminal devices in the network environment 100, and the terminal device 102 and the terminal device 104 may also perform SL communication with other terminal device (s) .

[0062] FIG. 2 illustrates an example signaling process 200 of SL congestion control in accordance with some example embodiments of the present disclosure. FIG. 2 will be described with reference to FIG. 1. It would be appreciated that although the signaling process 200 has been described referring to the network environment 100 of FIG. 1, this signaling process 200 may be likewise applied to other similar communication scenarios.

[0063] As shown in FIG. 2, the process 200 may involve the terminal device 102 and the terminal device 104 as illustrated in FIG. 1, the terminal device 102 may also be called as a SL transmitting (Tx) UE 102, and, the terminal device 104 may also be called as a SL receiving (Rx) UE 104. However, the terminal device 102 and the terminal device 104 may be the terminal devices in a similar scenario but not shown in FIG. 1. Furthermore, although it is shown in FIG. 2 that the process 200 involves SL transmission between two terminal devices, i.e., the terminal device 102 and the terminal device 104, the process 200 may be applied to SL transmissions between the terminal device 102 and other terminal device (s) in a similar way.

[0064] In the signaling process 200, the terminal device 102 may obtain, at step 202, a sidelink congestion control configuration. The sidelink congestion control configuration may comprise at least one criterion for performing either discarding a PDU set or adapting at least one transmission parameter for the PDU set. For example, the sidelink congestion control configuration may comprise at least one criterion for performing discarding a PDU set and / or adapting at least one transmission parameter for the PDU set. For example, the sidelink congestion control configuration may comprise at least one criterion for performing either  discarding at least part of a PDU set or adapting at least one transmission parameter for the PDU set.

[0065] In some example embodiments, the terminal device 102 may receive the sidelink congestion control configuration from a network device (e.g. network device 106 as shown in FIG. 1) . The sidelink congestion control configuration may be received via a configuration signaling message, for example, broadcasted system information block (SIB) or dedicated radio resource control (RRC) signaling such as RRC Setup, RRC Resume, RRC Reconfiguration message. Alternatively, the terminal device 102 may determine the sidelink congestion control configuration which is preconfigured for the terminal device 102. Furthermore, the at least one transmission parameter may be, together with the at least one criterion, included in the sidelink congestion control configuration, and obtained or received by the terminal device 102. Alternatively, the at least one transmission parameter may be configured and obtained separately from the sidelink congestion control configuration. Herein, the at least one transmission parameter may be, for example, sidelink transmission parameters such as a range of modulation coding scheme (MCS) , the max number of retransmission, a range of sub-channel numbers, the max transmission powers, and / or the like. The at least one transmission parameter may be configured for a certain SL priority associated with the SL RB or LCH. In some embodiments of the present disclosure, the at least one criterion may be received from a network device which the terminal device 102 is connected with (e.g., the network device 106 as illustrated in FIG. 1) . The at least one criterion may be configured by the network device 106. Alternatively or additionally, the at least one criterion may be pre-configured for the terminal device 102.

[0066] At step 204, if the terminal device 102 detects that a sidelink congestion occurs, for example, in the sidelink resource pool used by the terminal device 102, the terminal device 102 may determine, based on the at least one criterion and based on a PSI of the PDU set, whether to perform either i) discarding at least part of the PDU set or ii) adapting of the at least one transmission parameter for the PDU set. For a certain or a given PDU set, if at least one criterion for performing discarding of the PDU set is met, the terminal device 102 may discard the certain PDU set or a part of the certain PDU set. If the criterion for performing discarding of the PDU set is not met, the terminal device 102 may choose to perform adapting of at least one transmission parameter for the PDU set. For example, the terminal device may be configured to select between options i) and ii) . For example, the terminal device may be configured to select both options i) and ii) as described later below.

[0067] For example, the terminal device 102 may determine whether the sidelink congestion occurs in a sidelink resource pool by measuring the CBR in the sidelink resource pool. Herein, the CBR may be defined as the portion of the sub-channels in the sidelink resource pool whose SL received signal strength indicator (RSSI) measured by the terminal device 102 exceeds a (pre-) configured threshold sensed over a CBR measurement window.

[0068] For example, the terminal device 102 may detect the sidelink congestion by measuring a CBR in a sidelink resource pool for the sidelink transmission by excluding sidelink transmission (s) from another determine device, e.g., the terminal device 104. As an example, in order to exclude the sidelink transmission (s) from the terminal device 104 from measuring the CBR, the terminal device 102 may exclude a sub-channel which has a received signal strength indicator (RSSI) higher than a RSSI threshold and which is used by the terminal device 104. Additionally or alternatively, the terminal device 102 may exclude a sidelink slot in which the terminal device 104 performs the sidelink transmission to the terminal device 102 in the event that a number of sub-channels used by the terminal device 104 exceed the RSSI threshold, or exclude a sidelink slot in which the terminal device 104 performs sidelink transmission to the terminal device 102. In this way, as the terminal device 102 and the terminal device 104 will not transmit sidelink data in the same sidelink slot due to half-duplex limitation, high CBR caused by the terminal device 104 may mean moderate or even low CBRs caused by other terminal devices using the same resource pool, and the terminal device 102 may be prevented from discarding its own PDU sets with low PSI unnecessarily due to measured high CBR caused by the terminal device 104. Furthermore, it should be noted that, as XR application is bandwidth-demanding, a single terminal device may, for example, occupy resources of the whole slot for SL transmission.

[0069] In some example embodiments, if the transmission of terminal device 104 cannot be differentiated from CBR measurement, the terminal device 102 may be configured to measure the CBR of the sidelink resource pool only from those SL slots the terminal device 104 does not use for performing SL transmission to the terminal device 102.

[0070] In some example embodiments, the sidelink congestion control configuration may comprise an indication of whether to exclude sidelink transmission (s) from another terminal device (e.g., the terminal device 104) when measuring a CBR in a sidelink resource pool for the sidelink transmission to be performed from the terminal device 102 to the other terminal device. Alternatively, such indication may be preconfigured for the terminal device 102.

[0071] Furthermore, in some embodiments of present disclosure, the at least one criterion may be related to a PDU set importance (PSI) . The at least one criterion may include at least one of a CBR threshold or a PSI threshold. If the measured CBR is higher than the CBR threshold and the PSI of a PDU set is lower than the PSI threshold, the terminal device 102 may determine to perform discarding at least part of the PDU set; otherwise, it may determine to perform adapting of at least one transmission parameter for the PDU set.

[0072] Alternatively, the at least one criterion may include a plurality of CBR thresholds and / or a plurality of PSI thresholds, and the plurality of CBR thresholds and the plurality of PSI thresholds may be associated with a plurality of sidelink priorities of sidelink transmission. A sidelink priority among the plurality of sidelink priorities may be one of a quality of service (QoS) flow priority, a sidelink radio bearer (RB) priority, or a logical channel (LCH) priority. The terminal device may select, based on the sidelink priority, a CBR threshold from the plurality of CBR thresholds and / or a PSI threshold from the plurality of PSI thresholds for determining whether to perform either i) discarding at least part of the PDU set or ii) adapting of the at least one transmission parameter for the PDU set. As an example, for a PDU set, the terminal device 102 may select a corresponding CBR threshold from the plurality of CBR thresholds and a corresponding PSI threshold from the plurality of PSI thresholds based on a sidelink priority corresponding to the PDU set or the QoS flow / SL RB / SL LCH of the PDU set, and then, the terminal device 102 may determine whether to perform either i) discarding at least part of the PDU set or ii) adapting of the at least one transmission parameter for the PDU set, based on the selected CBR threshold and PSI threshold.

[0073] In some example embodiments, the at least one criterion may further include at least one of a PDU set size threshold or a PDU set size range. The terminal device 102 may apply the CBR threshold and the PSI threshold to a PDU set with a PDU set size higher or lower than the PDU set size threshold or within the PDU set size range. That is to say, if the measured CBR is higher than the CBR threshold, the PSI of a PDU set is lower than the PSI threshold, and the PDU set size of the PDU set is higher or lower than the PDU set size threshold or within the PDU set size range, the terminal device 102 may determine to perform discarding at least part of the PDU set; otherwise, it may determine to perform adapting of at least one transmission parameter for the PDU set. Herein, selecting to discard a PDU set with higher PDU set size may mitigate the sidelink congestion fast, while selecting to discard a  PDU set with a lower PDU set size may have less affect to the SL transmission. Selection of a discarding mechanism to be applied may depend on various needs and situation.

[0074] In some example embodiments, in case of determining whether to perform discarding at least part of a PDU set as above, if at least one PDU in the PDU set has been transmitted to another terminal device (e.g., the terminal device 104) , a size of remaining at least one PDU in the PDU set which have not been transmitted to the other terminal device may be compared with the PDU set size threshold or the PDU set size range. That is to say, if some PDUs in the PDU set have been transmitted to the terminal device 104, the size of the transmitted PDUs may not be counted as included in the PDU set size when comparing with the PDU set size threshold. Thus, in case the measured CBR is higher than the CBR threshold, the PSI of the PDU set is lower than the PSI threshold, and the PDU set size of the remaining PDU (s) in the PDU set is higher or lower than the PDU set size threshold or within the PDU set size range, the terminal device 102 may determine to perform discarding at least part of the PDU set.

[0075] Additionally, the PDU set for which the determination of whether to discard is performed may be a PDU set of which any PDU has not been transmitted to another terminal device (e.g., terminal device 104) . For example, for a QoS flow of which PSIHI indicates all PDUs in the PDU set are needed for the usage of PDU set by the application layer, the discarding can be performed only when any PDU of the PDU set has not been transmitted to the terminal device 104.

[0076] In some example embodiments, the terminal device 102 may determine an order of transmission of a plurality of PDU sets based on at least one of PSIs or PDU set sizes of the plurality of PDU sets to obtain a queue of PDU sets, and discard one or more PDU sets last in the queue of PDU sets in an event of reaching a PDU set delay budget (PSDB) .

[0077] For example, the terminal device 102 may determine, for each of the plurality of PDU sets, a number of transport blocks (TBs) to be transmitted to the terminal device 104 based on a number of available hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) processes in the terminal device 104. The number of available HARQ processes may be determined by an indication of the maximum number of HARQ processes that the terminal device 104 can support and the number of HARQ processes that has been used without receiving HARQ Acknowledgement (ACK) . Accordingly, the terminal device 102 may adaptively determine which PDU set (s) to transmit to the terminal device 104 based on PSI and the PDU set size.  For example, the terminal device 102 may transmit PDU sets in the queue of PDU sets in the determined order, to the terminal device 104. By transmitting the PDU sets in the determined order, for example, the PDU sets with low PSI may have to be discarded if corresponding PSDB has been reached.

[0078] In some example embodiments, the number of available HARQ processes may be estimated based on weighted PSIs of the plurality of PDU sets. For example, the most important PDU set can use the maximum number of HARQ processes for the estimation of the available HARQ processes, while the lower important PDU set may use a smaller number of HARQ processes for the estimation. In this way, the PDU sets with low PSI may not be transmitted due to the limitation of the number of HARQ processes in the terminal device 104, and thus lead to the discarding of these PDU sets.

[0079] In some example embodiments, the order of transmission of the plurality of PDU sets may be determined further based on the number of TBs. For example, the terminal device 102 may discard one or more PDU sets last in the queue of PDU sets in an event of reaching a maximum number of TBs.

[0080] Alternatively, the order of transmission of the plurality of PDU sets may be determined further based on the number of remaining PDUs of a PDU set which have not been transmitted. For example, the terminal device 102 may determine how much data in a PDU set has been already transmitted. If most of the PDUs in the PDU set are transmitted (e.g. if the number of remaining PDUs in the PDU set is less than a threshold) , the remaining PDUs of the same PDU set may be transmitted first.

[0081] In some example embodiments, if the terminal device 102 determines to perform adapting of at least one transmission parameter for the PDU set in the case that the criterion for performing discarding of the PDU set is not met, as PDU sets with different PSIs of the same QoS flow are mapped to the same SL RB / LCH, the adapting of sidelink transmission parameters is not performed per SL RB / LCH specific as in legacy SL congestion control, but per PDU set specific. Thus, in addition to the legacy SL congestion control configuration on SL transmission parameters depending on CBR range and SL priority, the PSI may be explicitly or implicitly configured for SL transmission parameters.

[0082] For example, as an explicit configuration, the terminal device 102 may determine at least one transmission parameter for the PDU set using a PSI of the PDU set instead of a SL priority of the PDU set. As another example, the terminal device 102 may determine the at  least one transmission parameter for the PDU set using the PSI of the PDU set in addition to the sidelink priority of the PDU set. For example, the PSI may be an additional configuration parameter in addition to SL priority. In this case, the at least one transmission parameter may be configured for at least one of different CBR ranges, SL priorities, PSIs or PSI ranges.

[0083] As another example, as an implicit configuration, the terminal device 102 may determine the at least one transmission parameter for the PDU set by adjusting the sidelink priority of the PDU set based on the PSI of the PDU set. For example, the applied SL priority using legacy SL CC configuration may be adjusted according to the PSI. Adjusting of the sidelink priority may be performed, for example, using a function such as priority_applied =SL priority + PSI. Herein, the SL priority may be one of a QoS flow priority, a sidelink RB priority, or a LCH priority.

[0084] In some example embodiments, when the terminal device 102 performs the adapting of the at least one transmission parameter for a plurality of PDU sets with different PSIs, the terminal device 102 may determine, for example, based on the available HARQ processes determined as above, whether to perform multiplexing PDUs in the PDU sets with different PSIs. For example, the terminal device 102 may determine whether to perform multiplexing PDUs in the PDU sets with different PSIs into different TBs to be transmitted according to at least one adapted transmission parameter corresponding to the different PSIs. Additionally or alternatively, the terminal device 102 may determine whether to perform multiplexing PDUs in the PDU sets with different PSIs into a same TB to be transmitted according to at least one adapted transmission parameter corresponding to the lowest PSI, the highest PSI, or an average PSI of the different PSIs of the PDU sets comprising PDUs multiplexed into the same TB. The terminal device 102 may be (pre-) configured to determine whether to perform multiplexing PDUs in the PDU sets with different PSI or not based on the terminal device 104’s capability, for instance, based on the terminal device 104’s capability on the number of HARQ processes.

[0085] In some embodiments of present disclosure, behaviors of the terminal device 102 such as support of multiplexing the PDUs with different PSI into the same TB as well as the applied PSI for transmission parameter adaptation may be, for example, specified by the standards. For example, the behaviors of the terminal device may be (pre-) configured to the terminal device 102.

[0086] As an example, the terminal device 102 may not multiplex the PDUs in the PDU sets with different PSI into the same sidelink TB so that each sidelink TB transmission may use corresponding Tx parameters.

[0087] As another example, the terminal device 102 may determine to multiplex the PDUs of the PDU sets with different PSIs into the same TB in case that the number of the available HARQ processes to be used for transmitting sidelink data to the terminal device 102 is less than a preset threshold. The terminal device 102 may determine to multiplex PDUs of the PDU sets with different PSIs into different TBs in case that the number of the available HARQ processes to be used is equal to or greater than the preset threshold. The preset threshold may be configured to be the maximum number of HARQ processes or a percentage of the maximum number of HARQ processes that the terminal device 104 can support.

[0088] Additionally or alternatively, the terminal device 102 may determine whether to perform multiplexing PDUs in the PDU sets with different PSIs based on other SL transmission capabilities of the terminal device 104.

[0089] In some embodiments of present disclosure, although it is described that the terminal device 102 performs either the discarding of at least part of the PDU set or the adapting of at least one transmission parameter for the PDU set, the discarding of at least part of the PDU set and the adapting of at least one transmission parameter for the PDU set may be used alone or in combination, as long as there is no logical and operational conflict. For example, the terminal device 102 may first discard some PDUs of the PDU set with low PSI or no PSIHI based on CBR threshold and PSI threshold and / or other factors, and if the SL congestion level is acceptable after the terminal device 102 discards some PDUs of the PDU set, the terminal device 102 might not apply the adapting of at least one transmission parameter for remaining PDUs. Alternatively or additionally, for example, the terminal device 102 may, depending on the (pre-) configured CBR threshold and PSI threshold limit or range, and based on the remaining PDU set size, discard some PDUs of the PDU set with very low priority, and further change transmission parameters of remaining PDUs of the PDU set in a similar way as the adapting of at least one transmission parameter as described above.

[0090] For example, for a PDU set with low PSI and / or no PSIHI, the terminal device 102 may first apply transmission parameter adaptation for a first part of the PDU set. When transmitting the first part of the PDU set, the terminal device 102 may detect that the congestion is still not reduced, at least not reduced enough, e.g. due to other high priority  data transmission. A threshold may be defined for the CBR for determining whether the congestion is reduced enough or not. Then, the terminal device 102 may discard the second part of the PDU set. The second part of the PDU set may comprise the rest or remaining PDUs in the PDU set after the first part of the PDU set has been transmitted using the adapted transmission parameters. The terminal device 102 may be configured to start transmission of the PDUs by applying transmission parameter adaptation and to continuously monitor the CBR. Number of PDUs in the first part of the PDU set may depend on how many PDUs has been transmitted, e.g. in a given or pre-defined or (pre) -configured time, before detecting that the CBR has not reduced enough.

[0091] In at least some embodiments, the terminal device 102 is configured to, based on detecting sidelink congestion, determine, based on the at least one criterion and based on a PSI of the PDU set, whether to perform either i) discarding at least part of the PDU set or ii) adapting of the at least one transmission parameter for the PDU set. In option i) , the terminal device 102 may be configured to discard a first part of the PDU set and adapt at least one transmission parameter for a second part of the PDU set. In option ii) , the terminal device 102 may adapt at least one transmission parameter for the PDU set, that is, start to transmit PDUs by applying transmission parameter adaptation. Then, the terminal device 102 may detect that the CBR is still above a threshold, and may be determine, based on detecting that the CBR remains above the threshold, to discard the remaining PDUs in the PDU set.

[0092] Additionally, some other thresholds may be (pre-) configured for performing the discarding of a PDU set or the adapting of at least one transmission parameter for the PDU set to reduce a channel occupancy ratio (CR) . For example, it may be configured as a CR reduction level corresponding to a CBR level, and the corresponding mitigation measure, i.e. discarding (re) transmissions or changing transmission parameters, may be left to UE implementation.

[0093] In some example embodiments, the terminal device 102 may report or indicate, from an access stratum (AS) layer of the terminal device 102 to a non-access-stratum (NAS) layer of the terminal device 102, the discarding of the at least part of the PDU set, or report or indicate the discarding of the at least part of the PDU set to the terminal device 104 in an AS layer or a NAS layer.

[0094] After step 204, the terminal device 102 may perform sidelink transmission with the terminal device 104 at step 206 based on result of the SL congestion control. For example,  after adapting of at least one transmission parameter for the PDU set, the terminal device 012 may perform sidelink transmission of the PDU set to the terminal device 104 according to at least one adapted transmission parameter. Since some PDU sets are discarded and / or transmission parameters for some other PDU sets are changed, the SL congestion may be mitigated without affecting quality of the SL transmission between the terminal device 102 and the terminal device 104 too much.

[0095] In some embodiments of present disclosure, although it is not shown in FIG. 2, when sidelink congestion occurs, the sidelink congestion control as above may be equally applied to the terminal device 104.

[0096] FIG. 3 illustrates another example signaling process 300 of SL congestion control in accordance with some example embodiments of the present disclosure.

[0097] FIG. 3 will be described with reference to FIG. 1. It would be appreciated that although the signaling process 300 has been described referring to the network environment 100 of FIG. 1, this signaling process 300 may be likewise applied to other similar communication scenarios.

[0098] As shown in FIG. 3, the process 300 may involve a terminal device 102 and a network device 106 as illustrated in FIG. 1. However, the terminal device 102 and the network device 106 may be a terminal device and a network device in a similar scenario but not shown in FIG. 1. Furthermore, although it is shown in FIG. 3 that the process 300 involves communication between the terminal device 102 and the network device 106, the process 300 may be applied to communication between the network device 106 and other terminal devices (such as the terminal device 104 as illustrated in FIG. 1) in a similar way.

[0099] In the signaling process 300, at step 302, the network device 106 may determine, for the terminal device 102, a sidelink congestion control configuration comprising at least one criterion for performing either discarding a PDU set or adapting at least one transmission parameter for the PDU set. The at least one criterion may be related to a PSI. Details related to the sidelink congestion control configuration have been described with reference to FIG. 2, thus will be not repeated for brevity.

[0100] Then at step 304, the network device 106 may transmit the determined sidelink congestion control configuration to the terminal device 102, such that the terminal device 102 may perform sidelink congestion control as described with reference to FIG. 2 based on the sidelink congestion control configuration.

[0101] FIG. 4 illustrates another example signaling process of SL congestion control in accordance with some example embodiments of the present disclosure.

[0102] FIG. 4 will be described with reference to FIG. 1. It would be appreciated that although the signaling process 400 has been described referring to the network environment 100 of FIG. 1, this signaling process 400 may be likewise applied to other similar communication scenarios.

[0103] As shown in FIG. 4, the process 400 may involve a SL Tx UE 102 (corresponding to the terminal device 102 as described above) , a SL peer UE 104 (corresponding to the terminal device 104 as described above) , and a network device 106 as illustrated in FIG. 1. However, the SL Tx UE 102, the SL peer UE 104 may be terminal devices and the network device 106 may be a network device in a similar scenario but not shown in FIG. 1.

[0104] In the signaling process 400, at step 402, the network device 106 may transmit a SL CC configuration to the SL Tx UE 102, the SL CC configuration may be determined by the network device 106 as described with reference to FIG. 3. For example, as shown in FIG. 4, the SL CC configuration may include PSI based PDU set discarding conditions (for example, the at least one criterion for performing discarding a PDU set or adapting at least one transmission parameter for the PDU set as described above) , PSI based PDU set Tx parameter adaption (for example, the at least one transmission parameter for the PDU set (s) ) , and CBR measurement with / without peer UE transmission (for example, whether the sidelink transmission (s) from the SL peer UE 104 should be excluded when measuring a CBR in a sidelink resource pool for the sidelink transmission) .

[0105] Thereafter, at step 404, the SL Tx UE 102 and the SL peer UE 104 may perform SL transmission, for example, start XR traffic transmission. During the SL transmission between the SL Tx UE 102 and the SL peer UE 104 at step 404, if a sidelink congestion occurs, the SL Tx UE 102 may perform sidelink congestion control at step 406. In particular, at step 406, for each PDU set to be transmitted to the SL peer UE 104, the SL Tx UE 102 may determine, based on at least one criterion and based on a PSI of the PDU set, whether to perform either i) discarding at least part of the PDU set or ii) adapting of at least one transmission parameter for the PDU set. For example, it may determine to discard PDU set (s) with low PSI or adapt Tx transmission parameters for PDU set (s) with certain PSI based on CBR measurement and configured conditions (for example, the conditions included in the SL CC configuration) . The at least one criterion may be related to a PSI, and may be included in the SL congestion  control configuration or may be preconfigured for the SL Tx UE 102. The details of step 406 have been described in detail with reference to FIG. 2, thus will be not repeated for brevity.

[0106] Then at step 408, the SL Tx UE 102 may perform SL transmission, for example, SL transmission on XR PDU sets, according to the determination at step 406. For example, the SL Tx UE 102 may perform sidelink transmission of the PDU sets to the SL peer UE 104 according to at least one transmission parameter adapted in the step 406.

[0107] At step 410, the SL peer UE 104 may also perform SL transmission to transmit PDU sets to the SL Tx UE 102. In some embodiments of present disclosure, the SL peer UE 104 may perform sidelink transmission without considering SL congestion control, that is, the sidelink congestion control is only performed at the SL Tx UE 102. Alternatively, the SL peer UE 104 may perform sidelink transmission with sidelink congestion control, that is, before step 410, the SL peer UE 104 may also perform sidelink congestion control as the SL Tx UE 102, and the SL transmission in step 410 is a SL transmission based on a result of the sidelink congestion control, like the SL transmission in step 408.

[0108] Then at step 412, as an example, the SL Tx UE 102 may determine CBR measurement based on detected received power from transmission of the SL peer UE 104 and the configuration on CBR measurement, and update, at step 414, the CBR measurement according to the determination of step 412. In some embodiments of present disclosure, the SL Tx UE 102 may measure CBR with or without considering sidelink transmission (s) from the SL peer UE 104 according to the configuration on CBR measurement received at step 402, as mentioned above. The measured CBR may be used in subsequent SL transmission for determining whether a SL congestion occurs and for SL congestion control.

[0109] FIG. 5 illustrates an example flowchart of a process of SL congestion control in accordance with some example embodiments of the present disclosure. FIG. 5 will be described with reference to FIG. 1.

[0110] At step 502, the terminal device 102 obtains a sidelink congestion control configuration comprising at least one criterion for performing either discarding a protocol data unit (PDU) set or adapting at least one transmission parameter for the PDU set, wherein the at least one criterion is related to a PDU set importance (PSI) . At step 504, the terminal device 102, based on detecting sidelink congestion, determines, based on the at least one criterion and based on a PSI of the PDU set, whether to perform either i) discarding at least part of the PDU set or ii) adapting of at least one transmission parameter for the PDU set.

[0111] In some example embodiments, the terminal device 102 may further, after adapting of the at least one transmission parameter for the PDU set, perform sidelink transmission of the PDU set to another terminal device according to at least one adapted transmission parameter.

[0112] In some example embodiments, the at least one criterion may comprise at least one of the following: a channel busy ratio (CBR) threshold; or a PDU set importance (PSI) threshold.

[0113] In some example embodiments, the terminal device 102 may measure a CBR to obtain a measured CBR; based on determining that the measured CBR is higher than the CBR threshold, and determining that PSI of the PDU set is lower than the PSI threshold, the terminal device 102 may determine to perform discarding at least part of the PDU set; and otherwise the terminal device 102 may determine to perform adapting of at least one transmission parameter of the PDU set.

[0114] In some example embodiments, the CBR threshold may be one of a plurality of CBR thresholds included in the at least one criterion, the PSI threshold may be one of a plurality of PSI thresholds included in the at least one criterion, and the plurality of CBR thresholds and the plurality of PSI thresholds may be associated with a plurality of sidelink priorities of sidelink transmission, wherein a sidelink priority among the plurality of sidelink priorities may be one of: a quality of service (QoS) flow priority; a sidelink radio bearer (RB) priority; or a logical channel (LCH) priority; and the terminal device 102 may, based on the sidelink priority, the CBR threshold and / or the PSI threshold for determining whether to perform either i) discarding at least part of the PDU set or ii) adapting of the at least one transmission parameter for the PDU set.

[0115] In some example embodiments, the at least one criterion may further comprise at least one of the following: a PDU set size threshold, wherein the CBR threshold and the PSI threshold are to be applied to a PDU set with a PDU set size higher or lower than the PDU set size threshold; or a PDU set size range, wherein the CBR threshold and the PSI threshold are to be applied to a PDU set with a PDU set size within the PDU set size range.

[0116] In some example embodiments, in the event that at least one PDU in the PDU set has been transmitted to another terminal device, a size of remaining at least one PDUs in the PDU set which have not been transmitted to the other terminal device may be compared with the PDU set size threshold or the PDU set size range.
