Description

[0001] Door seals

[0002] Field of the Invention

[0003] The present invention concerns door seals for preventing the passage of pests. More particularly, but not exclusively, this invention concerns door seals for a door of a building that cover the gap between an edge of the door and a surface adjacent to the door.

[0004] Background of the Invention

[0005] It is known to mount door seals to an edge of a door, to attempt to prevent the passage of pests including rats and mice through a gap between the door and an adjacent surface. Such a door seal is disclosed in US 2015 / 0292197 Al (Miller et al.), published 15 October 2015, which discloses a door seal comprising a layer of metal mesh embedded in a flexible polymer. As can be seen in Figure 2 of

[0006] US 2015 / 0292197 Al, the metal mesh is formed of two sets of metal strands arranged perpendicular to one another to form a grid. However, one issue with such a door seal is that to reliably span the gap, the door seal should be larger than the gap, but bend so as to provide a secure fit. This requires the door seal to be flexible, which is hindered by the metal strands arranged vertically within the flexible polymer, making the door seal too stiff and inflexible.

[0007] To overcome this disadvantage, WO 2018 / 099532 Al (Raxit International IVS), published 7 June 0218, discloses a similar door seal but with embedded metal strands extending only horizontally, in order to provide a more flexible seal.

[0008] It is a disadvantage of both types of door seal that while materials comprising metal wire strands can provide some barrier to rodents, over time rodents are able to break through the barrier. This is because, while rodents may not be able to chew through or break the metal wires, once the surrounding material in which they are embedded has been removed, the strands can be moved apart from one another, resulting in a gap in the mesh large enough for a rodent to pass through. This is especially the case when there are only horizontal wires, but also occurs the metal wire mesh is formed of woven metal wires. It can even occur when the wires of a mesh are joined to one another, as rodents may be capable of breaking the joins between the wires.

[0009] A door seal that more reliably prevents the passage of pests such as rodents, particularly without having reduced vertical flexibility, would be advantageous to provide.

[0010] The present invention seeks to mitigate some or all of the above-mentioned problems. Alternatively or additionally, the present invention seeks to provide an improved door seal.

[0011] Summary of the Invention

[0012] In accordance with a first aspect of the invention there is provided a door seal for preventing the passage of pests, the door seal being arranged to be mounted to an edge of a door of a building so that it covers the gap between the edge of the door and a surface adjacent to the door, the door seal comprising: a flexible planar sheet of elastomeric material having a first end and a second end opposite the first end; and a flexible planar sheet of knitted material; wherein the flexible planar sheet of knitted material is embedded within the flexible planar sheet of elastomeric material, and wherein the door seal is arranged such that when one of the first end or the second end of the flexible planar sheet of elastomeric material is mounted to the edge of the door, the other of the first end or the second end of the flexible planar sheet of elastomeric material is in contact with the surface adjacent to the door.

[0013] By having the door seal comprise a flexible planar sheet of elastomeric material, the door seal is able to span the gap between the edge of the door and the surface adjacent the edge of the door (such as a floor or the ground). The edge of the door and / or the surface adjacent to the door may be uneven and may not be level, but the door seal is able to bend so that a seal can be formed along the entire length of the flexible planar sheet of elastomeric material.

[0014] This is the case even though the door seal has embedded within it a flexible planar sheet of knitted material, which provides an internal barrier extending vertically as well as horizontally. While the knitted material extends vertically within the sheet of elastomeric material, the vertical extension is provided by the strands that form the rows of stitches of the knitted material, with each row being linked to the rows above and below. As such, the vertical extension of any strand of the knitted material is at most between the rows above and below. As the rows of stitches are interlinked, there is no gap through which a pest could pass, but the interlinking essentially forms a hinge between the rows of stitches, making the knitted material easily able to flex vertically. In this way, the knitted material provides a barrier to pests, but the door seal is not made too inflexible by the knitted material.

[0015] Further, the knitted material has the advantage that pests such as rodents cannot pull the material apart. This is because it is formed of a single strand and / or multiple strands, unlike braided or woven materials, or materials made from a plurality of compressed strands.

[0016] The door seal may prevent the passage of pests such as rodents, and / or other vertebrate or invertebrate pests.

[0017] As the flexible planar sheet of knitted material is embedded within the flexible planer sheet of elastomeric material, the knitted material can be protected from environmental damage, for example due to the weather, including rain. Further, the planar sheet of flexible elastomeric material itself can provide some barrier to pests . Still further, embedding the knitted material within the flexible planar sheet of elastomeric material can protect the knitted material from unravelling.

[0018] As the door seal is arranged to have one of a first end or a second end mounted to the door, and the other of a first end or a second end in contact with the surface adjacent to the door, it can be substantially flat. A substantially flat shape of the door seal means there are no regions in which a pest may become trapped, as could occur with a tubular door seal, for example.

[0019] By “knitted material” is meant any material formed of a single strand, and / or multiple strands, the strands being arranged in a plurality of rows, each row being interconnected with its adjacent row or rows. A knitted material can be formed of a single strand and / or multiple strands arranged in rows of stitches, the stitches of each row being looped around or interlocking with an adjacent row. Knitted materials can include circular knitted, warp knitted, warp and weft knitted, chain-linked and knotted materials.

[0020] The flexible planar sheet of knitted material may be formed of metal wire. Forming the knitted material from metal wire can improve the effectiveness of the door seal as a barrier against rodents, as rodents may not be able to gnaw through or break the metal wire.

[0021] The flexible planar sheet of knitted material may be fully embedded within the flexible planar sheet of elastomeric material.

[0022] The flexible planar sheet of elastomeric material may be rectangular in shape. By making the flexible planar sheet of elastomeric material rectangular in shape, the door seals may be arranged to span most gaps between the edge of a door and a surface adjacent to the door. By “rectangular in shape”, it is understood that a face of the flexible planar sheet of elastomeric material is rectangular. Alternatively, the face of the flexible planar sheet of elastomeric material may be another shape, including a shape with curved or crenulated ends.

[0023] The flexible planar sheet of elastomeric material and the flexible planar sheet of knitted material may be substantially coplanar.

[0024] The thickness of the first end of the flexible planar sheet of elastomeric material may reduce in the direction of the first end from the second end of the flexible planar sheet of elastomeric material. Since the first end of the flexible planar sheet of elastomeric material may comprise an area of reduced thickness, it may flex more easily than the rest of the flexible planar sheet of elastomeric material, and so may allow the door seal to more effectively seal the gap between the edge of a door and a surface adjacent to the door. By “thickness” is meant the thickness of the flexible planar sheet of elastomeric material measured in a direction perpendicular to the plane of the flexible planar sheet of elastomeric material. Alternatively or additionally, the thickness of the second end of the flexible planar sheet of elastomeric material may reduce in the direction of the second end from the first end of the flexible planar sheet of elastomeric material. Since both the first and second ends of the flexible planar sheet of elastomeric material may comprise an area of reduced thickness, the flexible planar sheet of elastomeric material can be installed on the edge of a door in multiple orientations so that the either the first or the end of the flexible planar sheet of elastomeric material may be arranged to contact the surface adjacent to the door. This may make installing the door seal more convenient. Further, the flexible planar sheets of elastomeric and knitted materials may be cut between the first and second ends of the flexible planar sheet of elastomeric material, resulting in two parts, each comprising an area of reduced thickness, that may both be used as door seals. In this way, a single door seal may be adapted to become two door seals.

[0025] The flexible planar sheet of elastomeric material may comprise at least one guide line for cutting the flexible sheet of elastomeric material, wherein the at least one guide line is substantially parallel to the first end and / or the second end of the flexible planar sheet of elastomeric material. The at least one guide line may comprise at least one indentation in the surface of the flexible planar sheet of elastomeric material. The guide lines of the flexible planar sheet of an elastomeric material allow the door seal to be cut to size, so that the door seal can better fit the gap between the edge of a door and a surface adjacent to the edge of the door. By indicating the guide lines with indentations, the flexible sheet of elastomeric material may be easier to cut.

[0026] The door seal may further comprise a mounting portion, wherein the door seal is arranged to be mounted to the edge of a door using the mounting portion.

[0027] The mounting portion may be rigid. The mounting portion can allow the door seal to be more easily mounted to the edge of the door, and can allow the door seal to be mounted more securely to the edge of the door. The mounting portion may allow the door seal to be more sturdy, and be better able to withstand use over longer periods of time.

[0028] The mounting portion may comprise a bracket by which the mounting portion is arranged to be mounted to the edge of the door. If the door is a roller door, the door seal may be mounted on the outer lower section of the door or underneath the edge of the door, for example.

[0029] Further, if the door seal is cut so that an edge of the sheet of knitted material is exposed, the bracket can cover the exposed edge so that the sheet of knitted material is protected from damage by pests and / or weather.

[0030] A surface of the mounting portion may comprise a plurality of corrugations and be arranged such that the plurality of corrugations are in contact with the flexible sheet of elastomeric material when the door seal is mounted to the edge of the door by the mounting portion.

[0031] The advantage of a surface of the mounting portion comprising a plurality of corrugations is that, when is the plurality of corrugations are in contact with the flexible planar sheet of elastomeric material, there may be an increased amount of friction to hold the sheet of elastomeric material to the surface of the mounting portion, compared to if the surface of the mounting portion was smooth. The plurality of corrugations can prevent the flexible planar sheet of elastomeric material slipping during installation.

[0032] The door seal may be mounted on the edge of a door using an adhesive, and then additionally secured to the door using screws and / or nails. In this way, the door seal can be more easily installed, as the adhesive can be used to position the door seal on the door, and then secured in its final position using the screws and / or nails. Alternatively, the door seal may be mounted on the edge of a door using only an adhesive, only screws and / or nails, or in any other desired manner.

[0049] Detailed Description

[0050] A door seal in accordance with an embodiment of the invention is now described with reference to Figures 1 to 10. The door seal 100 is arranged to be mounted to the edge of a door of a building to span the gap between the door and a surface adjacent to the edge of a door (such as a floor of the building), so that the door seal 100 prevents the passage of pests such as rodents through the gap.

[0051] Figure 1 is a perspective view of the door seal 100, and Figure 2 is a side view which also shows some of the internal structure of the door seal 100. The door seal 100 comprises a rectangular planar sheet of elastomeric material 109 such as a flexible polymer, rubber or other suitable flexible material. In some embodiments the sheet of elastomeric material 109 has variable thickness, while in other embodiments the thickness of the sheet of elastomeric material 109 is constant. The sheet of elastomeric material 109 has a first end 101 which is arranged to be mounted on the edge of the door, and a second end 102, opposite the first end 101, arranged to make contact with the surface adjacent to the edge of the door, the first end 101 and second end 102 making up opposite sides of the rectangle. The sheet of elastomeric material 109 has a third end 103 and a fourth opposite end 104, which, make up the other opposite sides of the rectangle, which have lengths equal to or greater than the height of the gap between the edge of the door and the surface adjacent to the edge of the door, so that the door seal 11 spans the gap. While in the present embodiment the sheet of elastomeric material 109 is rectangular, it will be appreciated that in other embodiments of the invention the sheet may be another shape, for example it may have rounded corners.

[0052] A face 105 of the sheet of elastomeric material 109 (i.e. a face of the rectangle) comprises a plurality of indentations 110. The indentations 110 are parallel to the first end 101 and second end 102 of the sheet of elastomeric material 109 and extend from the third end 103 to the fourth end 104. When the door seal is to be installed on the edge of the door, the indentations 110 can be used as guide lines for cutting the sheet of elastomeric material 109 so that the door seal can be fitted to the height of the gap between the edge of the door and a surface adjacent to the edge of the door. In other embodiments, there may also be indentations 100 on the opposite face to face 105, or no indentations on either face of the sheet of elastomeric material

[0053] As can be seen in particular in Figure 2, the thickness of the first end 101 of the sheet of elastomeric material 109 reduces in the direction of the first end 101 from the second end 102 of the sheet of elastomeric material 109. The thickness of the second end 102 of the sheet of elastomeric material 109 also reduces in the direction of the second end 102 from the first end 101 of the sheet of elastomeric material 109 in identical fashion, so that the first end 101 and the second end 102 of the sheet of elastomeric material 109 are identical in shape. In other embodiments, the first end 101 and the second end 102 may be different in shape.

[0054] In some embodiments, the first end 101 and / or the second end 102 comprises a single planar surface joining the face 105 of the sheet of polymeric material with the opposite face 115.

[0055] The door seal 100 comprises a flexible planar sheet of knitted material 108. The knitted material is made of steel wire, but in other embodiments is made of other metal wire or other suitable material. The sheet of knitted material 108 is fully embedded in the sheet of elastomeric material 109 so that the sheet of knitted material 108 and the sheet of elastomeric material 109 form a single composite construction. In other embodiments, the sheet of knitted material may be partially embedded in the sheet of elastomeric material.

[0056] The door seal 100 may be formed by extruding an elastomeric material around the sheet of knitted material 108, moulding an elastomeric material around the sheet of knitted material 108, laminating the sheet of knitted material 108 between sheets of elastomeric material, or any other suitable method. In an embodiment, the door seal 100 is formed by co-extrusion, in which the sheet of knitted material 108 passes through an extrusion to encapsulate it within the elastomeric material in a single process. In another embodiment, the door seal 100 is formed by lamination of multiple layers of knitted material 108 and elastomeric material.

[0057] The sheet of knitted material 108 lies in the same plane as the sheet of elastomeric material, and substantially spans area of the sheet of elastomeric material 109. In embodiments, the sheet of knitted material 108 may span more than 90% of the area of a face of the sheet of elastomeric material 109, more than 75% of the area of a face of the sheet of elastomeric material 109, or more than 50% of the area of a face of the sheet of elastomeric material 109, say.

[0058] Figure 3 is a close-up view of the end 101 of the door seal 100. The end 101 comprises a first surface 111 having a first curvature and a second surface 112 having a second curvature. In other embodiments one or both of the first surface 111 and the second surface 112 may be flat. The first surface 111 and second surface 112 intersect at an edge 113, so that the thickness of the end 101 reduces in in the direction of the end 101 from end 102 of the sheet of elastomeric material 109. The edge 113 lies outside of the plane of the sheet of elastomeric material 109, or in other embodiments may lie in the plane of the sheet of elastomeric material 109. In other embodiments, the end 101 is truncated. The sheet of knitted material 108 does not extend fully into the end 101, but in other embodiments may do so.

[0059] When the door seal 100 is mounted to a door, part of the edge 113 makes contact with a surface adjacent to the door, causing the door seal 100 to flex. This flexing allows the edge 113 to make contact with the surface adjacent the door along the whole length of the edge 113 so that a seal is formed between the door and the surface adjacent to the door.

[0060] Figure 4 shows close-up view of a section of door seal 100, showing the indentations 110 in the face 105 of the sheet of elastomeric material 109. The face 105 of the sheet of elastomeric material 109 comprises curved raised areas 114 between the indentations 110. In other embodiments, the indentations 110 may be grooves or scores in the face of the sheet of elastomeric material 109, or may be V-shaped or may be crenulations. In some embodiments, at least one indentation may form a guide line extending over the face 105 of the sheet of elastomeric material 109. In some embodiments, a plurality of indentations may form a broken line extending over the face 105 of the sheet of elastomeric material 109.

[0061] Figure 5 shows a close-up view of a portion of the sheet of knitted material 108. The sheet of knitted material 108 is formed of a single strand and / or multiple strands of metal wire arranged in parallel rows of open loops 121, 122 and 123. The loops of a row 122 are interconnected with loops of the adjacent rows 121 and 123. The loops of each row are interconnected with at least one loop of an adjacent row. Each loop of a row 122 is arranged in line with the corresponding loops of adjacent rows 121, 123. By virtue of its construction the material is flexible, and also stretchable, in directions parallel and perpendicular to the rows of interconnected loops.

[0062] Figure 6 shows a close up view of a portion of a sheet of knitted material in accordance with another embodiment of the invention. In this case, again a single strand and / or multiple strands of metal wire is arranged in parallel rows 131, 132 and 133 of closed loops. Each loop of a row 132, 133 is looped around the strand in an adjacent row 131, 132 so that each row is interconnected with at least one adjacent row. However, in contrast to the embodiment shown in Figure 5, each loop of a row 131, 132, 133 is misaligned with the corresponding loops of adjacent rows. Again, the material is flexible and also stretchable in directions parallel perpendicular to the rows of loops.

[0063] The door seal 100 is arranged to be mounted to the edge of a door using a mounting portion 200, as now described with reference to Figures 7 to 9. In other embodiments the door seal may be mounted to the edge of a door without using a mounting portion, for example by being glued and / or screwed to the door.

[0064] Figure 7 shows a perspective view of a mounting portion 200 according to an embodiment of the invention. The mounting portion 200 is formed of aluminium, but in other embodiments may be formed of another metal or any other suitable material. The mounting portion comprises a body 201 and a lip 202. The lip 202 is located along a first edge 203 of the body 201. The first edge of the body 201 is of substantially the same length as the first end 101 of the sheet of elastomeric material 109 of door seal 100. In other embodiments, the first edge of the body 201 may be shorter in length than the first end 101 of the sheet of elastomeric material. Figure 8 shows a close-up view of a portion of mounting portion 200. The body 201 comprises a mounting surface 204. When the door seal 100 is mounted to the edge of a door, the mounting surface 204 is in contact with the sheet of elastomeric material 109. The mounting surface 204 comprises a plurality of corrugations 205, which extend in a direction parallel to the first edge 203 of the body 201. In other embodiments, the corrugations 205 may extend perpendicularly to the first edge 203 of the body 200, or the mounting surface 204 may not comprise corrugations. The corrugations 205 are V-shaped. In other embodiments, the corrugations 205 may be crenulations or any other suitable shape.

[0065] Figure 9 shows a side view of mounting portion 200. The comer of the mounting portion 200 where the body 201 and the lip 202 meet is curved. There is a V-shaped groove 206 on the surface 207 of the body 201 opposite the mounting surface 204, roughly half way between end of the body 201 that meets the lip 202 and the opposite end of the body 201, extending along the length of the body 201.

[0066] Figure 10 shows a side view of the door seal 100 together with the mounting portion 200, in the arrangement in which the door seal 100 is mounted to the edge of a door using the mounting portion 200. The face 105 of the sheet of elastomeric material 109 of the door seal 100 is in contact with the mounting surface 204 of the mounting portion 200, so that the corrugations 205 of the mounting portion 200 are in contact with the curved raised areas 114 of the sheet of elastomeric material 109. In this way, when the mounting portion 200 is fixed to a door, the sheet of elastomeric material 109 is held in position by friction fit.

[0067] The door seal 100 can additionally or alternatively be mounted to the edge of a door using an adhesive, screws, staples or any other suitable mounting means, including a combination of such mounting means. In particular, the mounting portion 200 can be screwed to a door through the V-shaped groove 206 in the body 201 of the mounting portion 200, with the V-shaped groove providing both a thinner part of the body 201 which is more easily penetrated by a screw, and helps hold the screw in position while it is being screwed into place.

[0068] A door seal in accordance with another embodiment of the invention is now described with reference to Figures 11 to 14.

[0069] Figure 11 shows a side view of a door seal 300. The door seal 300 is similar to the door seal 100 of the previous embodiment, but comprises a sheet of knitted material 308 embedded in a sheet of elastomeric material 309 that share an end 301, so that an end of the sheet of knitted material 308 is exposed. The door seal 300 is formed by cutting door seal 100, but in other embodiments the door seal 300 may be formed by moulding or extruding the sheet of elastomeric material 309 around the sheet of knitted material 308, such that the sheet of knitted material 308 is embedded in the sheet of elastomeric material 309.

[0070] Figure 12 shows a side view of the door seal 300 together with the mounting portion 200. As can be seen, the lip 202 covers the exposed edge of the sheet of knitted material 308, protecting the exposed edge for example from pests and the weather. In some embodiments, the edge 301 may be sealed, for example to prevent the sheet of knitted material unravelling.

[0071] Figure 13 shows a side view of a door seal 400 according to another embodiment of the invention, which is again similar to the door seal 100. However, the sheet of elastomeric material 409 of the door seal 400 comprises only a single tapered end 401, with the opposite end 402 being flat.

[0072] Figure 14 shows a side view of a door seal 500 according to another embodiment of the invention. In this embodiment bother ends 501 and 502 of the door seal 500 are flat.
