Description

"Actuation system of a braking system"

[0001] Field of the invention

[0002] The present invention relates to an actuation system of a braking system of the Brake-By-Wire ("BBW") type of a vehicle with two or more wheels operable by a driver by means of a brake pedal or lever.

[0003] Background art

[0004] In braking systems of the BBW type, there is a decoupling between force and displacement impressed on the brake pedal or lever by the driver and the resulting braking force which is applied by the calipers to the vehicle wheels.

[0005] In BBW braking systems, the force or displacement impressed by the driver on the brake pedal or lever are transduced into an electrical signal which is processed by a control unit to control the actuation of the braking system calipers.

[0006] However, in the known BBW braking systems, such a decoupling between the force impressed on the brake pedal by the driver and the braking force which is applied by the calipers to the wheels of the vehicle causes difficulties in returning tactile signals and feedbacks to the driver, such as the tremble of the brake pedal of a conventional braking system which is triggered when the ABS system intervenes.

[0007] Moreover, both the BBW braking systems and the conventional hydraulic braking systems do not allow transmitting particular alerts or warning signals related to the braking system itself to the driver, such as a parking brake engagement or disengagement alert, for example.

[0008] Furthermore, both BBW braking systems and conventional hydraulic braking systems occupy a large volume in the passenger compartment, in particular in the region occupied by the driver's feet, due to the presence of the brake pedal, in both the hanging brake pedal configuration and the floor brake pedal configuration.

[0009] Furthermore, neither BBW braking systems nor conventional hydraulic braking systems are usable by disabled users lacking functionality in their lower limbs.

[0010] Braking systems intended for use by disabled drivers are known, generally comprising a lever engaged at the driver's side to be actuated for activating the braking system. However, such systems also have large dimensions.

[0011] Solution

[0012] It is the object of the present invention to provide a method of actuating a braking system, in particular of the BBW type, and a braking system such as to solve at least some of the drawbacks of the prior art.

[0013] It is a particular object of the present invention to provide an actuation system of a braking system and a braking system, configured to return and transmit tactile signals and feedback to the driver, such as the tremble of the brake pedal of a conventional braking system which is triggered when the ABS intervenes or a parking brake engagement or disengagement alert.

[0014] It is a further particular object of the present invention to provide an actuation system of a braking system and a braking system adapted to be usable by users with disabilities, in particular users lacking functionality in their lower limbs.

[0015] It is a further particular object of the present invention to provide an actuation system of a braking system and a braking system, which have a small size, in particular in the driver's leg and foot region.

[0016] These and other objects are achieved by a method of actuating a braking system and a braking system according to the independent claims.

[0017] The dependent claims relate to preferred and advantageous embodiments of the present invention.

[0026] Description of some preferred embodiments

[0027] An actuation system is generally indicated by reference numeral 1 .

[0028] The actuation system 1 is adapted to actuate a braking system 2 of a vehicle, in particular a braking system 2 of the Brake-by-Wire (BBW) type.

[0029] The actuation system 1 comprises an actuation button 3.

[0030] The actuation button 3 is adapted to be pressed by the driver while driving the vehicle. The actuation button 3 is adapted to actuate the braking system 2. In particular, the actuation button 3 is configured so that an actuation force applied by the driver to the actuation button 3 corresponds to a braking force applied by the braking system 2 to the vehicle.

[0031] The actuation button 3 defines a thrust surface 8. The thrust surface 8 faces the outside of the actuation system 1 . The thrust surface 8 is adapted to be pressed by the driver, in particular to actuate the braking system 2.

[0032] The actuation system 1 comprises at least one tactile feedback actuator 4.

[0033] The tactile feedback actuator 4 is configured to generate a tactile feedback and transmit the tactile feedback to the actuation button 3.

[0034] The tactile feedback generated by the tactile feedback actuator 4 is thus perceivable by the driver who presses the actuation button 3.

[0035] The actuation system 1 further comprises at least one sensor 5.

[0036] The sensor 5 is configured to detect parameters related to the actuation system 1. Such parameters comprise the actuation force which can be applied by the driver to the actuation button 3.

[0037] The actuation system 1 further comprises a support element 6.

[0038] The support element 6 is connected to the actuation button 3 opposite to the thrust surface 8.

[0039] The housing body 1 further forms a housing compartment 7.

[0040] The housing compartment 7 is enclosed between the actuation button 3 and the support element 6. Preferably, the housing compartment 7 is a closed compartment.

[0041] The tactile feedback actuator 4 is positioned inside the housing compartment 7.

[0042] Furthermore, the tactile feedback actuator 4 is configured to generate a tactile feedback modulated as a function of the actuation force of the actuation button 3 detected by the sensor 5.

[0043] Preferably, the tactile feedback to be generated by the tactile feedback actuator 4 is a vibration.

[0044] Advantageously, an actuation system 1 thus configured allows returning and transmitting tactile signals and feedbacks to the driver, such as the tremble of the brake pedal of a conventional braking system which is triggered when the ABS intervenes or a parking brake engagement or disengagement alert, for example, by means of the tactile feedback actuator 4 and the actuation button 3.

[0045] With additional advantage, an actuation system 1 thus configured is easilyusable by users with disabilities, in particular users lacking function in their lower limbs. Indeed, the actuation system 1 , in the operating configuration, allows actuating the braking system 2 by pressing the actuation button 3 by means of the driver's finger or hand.

[0046] With additional advantage, the actuation system 1 thus configured has a reduced size compared to the prior art, in particular in the driver's legs and feet region. Indeed, unlike the systems of the prior art, the actuation system 1 does not require a brake pedal or an actuation lever of the braking system, located at the driver's legs.

[0047] With additional advantage, the tactile feedback generated and transmitted by the tactile feedback actuator 4 to the actuation button 3 is modulated as a function of the actuation pressure or force applied by the driver, so the actuation system 1 thus configured is adapted to return information or feedback to the driver in response to the magnitude of the applied actuation force, similarly to the variable actuation resistance of a brake pedal in a conventional braking system.

[0048] According to an embodiment, the thrust surface 8 is convex in shape.

[0049] According to an embodiment, the thrust surface 8 is shaped like a sphere portion.

[0050] According to an embodiment, the thrust surface 8 is substantially hemispherical in shape.

[0051] According to an embodiment, the thrust surface 8 is shaped like a spherical dome, with a smaller surface area than a hemisphere.

[0052] Advantageously, a thrust surface 8 thus configured ensures high actuation ergonomics.

[0053] According to an embodiment, the actuation button 3 is made of a non-slip material. In particular, a portion of the actuation button 3 which defines the thrust surface 8 is made of a non-slip material.

[0054] According to an embodiment, the actuation button 3 is made of a polymer material.

[0055] According to an embodiment, the actuation button 3 is internally hollow. The actuation button thus defines at least partially the housing compartment 7.

[0056] Furthermore, the actuation button 3 defines an inner button surface 9. Specifically, the inner button surface 9 defines at least partially the housing compartment 7.

[0057] The inner button surface 9 is opposite to the thrust surface 8 and faces thehousing compartment 7.

[0058] Therefore, in the embodiment in which the thrust surface 8 is convex, the inner button surface 9 is concave in shape.

[0059] According to an embodiment, the tactile feedback actuator 4 is connected to the inner button surface 9.

[0060] Advantageously, such a configuration ensures high transmissibility of the tactile feedback to the driver.

[0061] According to an embodiment, the tactile feedback actuator 4 is connected to the inner button surface 9 at a central portion 10 of the actuation button 3.

[0062] In the embodiment in which the thrust surface 8 has a convex or spherical dome shape, the central portion 10 corresponds to an apex portion of the thrust surface 8.

[0063] According to an embodiment, one or more tactile feedback actuators 4 are connected to the button surface 9, at a peripheral portion 11 of the actuation button 3.

[0064] In the embodiment in which the thrust surface 8 has a convex or spherical dome shape, the peripheral portion 11 corresponds to a base portion of the thrust surface 8, at the support element 6.

[0065] According to an embodiment, the at least one tactile feedback actuator 4 is a rotary voice coil 12.

[0066] The rotary voice coil 12 is configured to generate and transfer a tactile feedback, in particular a vibration, substantially over the entire thrust surface 8.

[0067] According to an embodiment, the rotary voice coil 12 is connected to an inner button surface 9 at a central portion 10 of the actuation button 3.

[0068] According to an embodiment, the actuation system 1 comprises a single rotary voice coil 12, preferably connected to the inner button surface 9 at the central portion 10 of the actuation button 3.

[0069] Advantageously, a single rotary voice coil 12 thus configured allows transferring the tactile feedback across the entire thrust surface 8.

[0070] According to an embodiment, the tactile feedback actuator 4 is a voice coil 13.

[0071] The voice coil 13 is configured to generate and transfer a tactile feedback, in particular a vibration, substantially along a single direction.

[0072] Voice coil 13 means an electromagnetic device comprising a coil assembly and a magnetic ground in which, by applying an electrical voltage to the tactile feedback actuator 4 through the power supply thereof, the actuator 4 moves in a given direction.By reversing the polarity of the applied voltage, the actuator 4 moves in the opposite direction. The vibration force generated by the actuator 4 is proportional to the current flowing through the coil assembly.

[0073] According to an embodiment, the actuation system 1 comprises a plurality of voice coils 13.

[0074] According to an embodiment, the voice coils 13 are connected to the inner button surface 9.

[0075] Advantageously, the plurality of voice coils 13 allows a tactile feedback, in particular a vibration, to be generated and transferred in a plurality of directions, thus achieving a vibration transmission over the entire thrust surface 8.

[0076] According to an embodiment, the actuation system 1 comprises at least one voice coil 13 positioned at the central portion 10 of the actuation button 3 and at least one voice coil 13 positioned at the peripheral portion 11 of the actuation button 3.

[0077] According to a preferred embodiment, the actuation system 1 comprises a single voice coil 13 positioned at the central portion 10 of the actuation button 3 and four voice coils 13 positioned at the peripheral portion 1 1 of the actuation button 3, distributed along the peripheral portion 1 1 .

[0078] Advantageously, the actuation button 3 and the at least one tactile feedback actuator 4 thus configured allow effectively transferring a tactile feedback across the entire thrust surface 8 so that is perceivable by the driver independently of the point of the thrust surface 8 touched by the driver.

[0079] According to an embodiment, the tactile feedback actuator 4 is configured to transmit a vibration transmitted according to one or a plurality of vibration modes, or vibration patterns, to the actuation button 3.

[0080] For example, the tactile feedback is emitted according to a clicking vibration, an increasing or decreasing ramp vibration, a pulsed vibration, a continuous strength vibration, a vibration interspersed with pauses of different durations, continuous strength vibrations of different durations, vibrations at different vibration frequencies, or vibrations of different vibration strengths. In particular, each vibration mode can correspond to a different signal or alert.

[0081] According to an embodiment, the actuation system 1 is configured to transmit to the actuation button 3 a vibration with a strength proportional, preferably directly proportional, to the actuation force impressed on the actuation button 3 by the driver.

[0082] According to an embodiment, the actuation button 3 has a greater thickness in the position in which the at least one tactile feedback actuator 4 is connected. As aresult, at the portion of the actuation button 3, in which the at least one tactile feedback actuator 4 is connected to the actuation button 3, the outer actuation surface 8 and the inner button surface 9 are spaced further apart from each other than at the remaining portions of the actuation button 3 in which no tactile feedback actuator 4 is connected.

[0083] According to a preferred embodiment, the support element 6 is substantially planar in shape.

[0084] According to an embodiment, the support element 6 is substantially discoidal in shape.

[0085] According to an embodiment, the support element 6 defines at least one housing seat 14.

[0086] Preferably, the housing seat 14 is a closed housing formed inside the support element 6.

[0087] According to an embodiment, the at least one sensor 5 is housed in a respective housing seat 14 of the support element 6.

[0088] Advantageously, such a configuration ensures better detection of the parameters related to the actuation system 1 , including the actuation force of the actuation button 3.

[0089] According to an embodiment, the actuation device 1 comprises a plurality of sensors 5.

[0090] According to an embodiment, the support 6 forms a single housing seat 14 and the plurality of sensors 5 is housed inside the same sensor seat 14.

[0091] Alternatively, each sensor 5 of the plurality of sensors 5 is housed in a respective housing seat 14 of the support element 6.

[0092] According to an embodiment, the actuation system 1 comprises only two sensors 5.

[0093] According to an embodiment, the at least one sensor 5 is configured to detect the tactile feedback emitted by the tactile feedback actuator 4.

[0094] Advantageously, the at least one sensor 5 is thus configured to detect both the actuation force of the actuation button 3 by the driver and the vibrations transmitted by the tactile feedback actuator 4.

[0095] According to an embodiment, the actuation button 3 is fixed to the support element 6 by means of a plurality of fixing elements, preferably by means of a plurality of fixing screws 15.

[0096] According to an embodiment, the actuation button 3 comprises an outercircular crown 16.

[0097] The circular crown 16 extends externally with respect to the actuation button 3.

[0098] Furthermore, the circular crown 16 faces the support element 6.

[0099] According to an embodiment, the circular crown 16 extends parallel to the support element 6.

[0100] According to an embodiment, the circular crown 16 extends externally with respect to the button 3 at the peripheral portion 11 .

[0101] According to an embodiment, the fixing screws 15 extend through the circular crown 16 and the support element 6, in the direction transverse to the circular crown 16 and the support element 6.

[0102] According to an embodiment, the fixing screws 15 are distributed equidistantly along the circular crown 16.

[0103] According to an embodiment, a screw head of the fixing screws 15 is positioned abutting against the circular crown 16, and a screw stem extends through the support element 6, screwed to the support element 6.

[0104] According to an embodiment, the actuation system 1 comprises a damping element.

[0105] According to an embodiment, the damping element is a polymer membrane 17. Preferably, the polymer membrane 17 is planar in shape.

[0106] According to an embodiment, the damping element, preferably the polymer membrane 17, is discoidal in shape.

[0107] According to an embodiment, the polymer membrane 17 is made of rubber, in particular EPDM rubber.

[0108] Alternatively, the damping element can be an elastomeric ring, in particular an O-ring, or a spring.

[0109] The damping element, preferably the polymer membrane 17, is interposed between the actuation button 3 and the support element 6.

[0110] The damping element, preferably the polymer membrane 17, is configured to damp and absorb the tactile feedbacks, in particular the vibrations, emitted by the at least one tactile feedback actuator 4.

[0111] Advantageously, the polymer membrane 17 is configured to dampen the transmission of the tactile feedbacks, in particular vibrations, generated by the tactile feedback actuator 4 and transferred from the actuation button 3, in particular from thecircular crown 16, to the support element 6. The vibrations generated by the at least one tactile feedback actuator 4 are thus substantially conveyed exclusively along the fixing elements, preferably the fixing screws 15. Therefore, the actuation system 1 thus configured avoids dispersing and dissipating such vibrations, and ensure a correct reading of such vibrations by the sensors 5 housed in the support element 6.

[0112] Hence, the polymer membrane 17 allows defining, confining, and limiting the transmission path of the tactile feedbacks, in particular vibrations, from the at least one tactile feedback actuator 4 towards the at least one sensor 5. Undesired tactile feedback dispersions are thus avoided, and in particular the transmission of vibrations is avoided between the actuation button 3 and the support element 6 directly to the interface between the circular crown 16 and the support element 6, which would distort the reading by the sensor 5, and instead it is ensured that the transmission substantially and exclusively occurs through the fixing screws 15.

[0113] According to an embodiment, the damping element, preferably the polymer membrane 17, is elastically deformable in the direction transverse to the plane over which the damping element extends.

[0114] Advantageously, such an elastic deformation allows obtaining a movement of the actuation button 3 towards the support element 6 when the actuation button 3 is actuated by the driver, improving the user's perception of the actuation of the system 1 and elastically returning the actuation button 3 to the rest position thereof when the actuation button 3 is not actuated.

[0115] According to an embodiment, the damping element, preferably the polymer membrane 17, is sandwiched between the circular crown 16 and the support element 6.

[0116] The fixing screws 15 are thus inserted transversely to the circular crown 16, the polymer membrane 17, and are screwed to the support element 6.

[0117] According to an embodiment, the actuation system 1 comprises an additional damping element, preferably an additional polymer membrane 17, connected to the support element 6, opposite to the actuation button 3.

[0118] Advantageously, the additional polymer membrane 17 is configured to dampen any vibrations from the vehicle, e.g., due to potholes, preventing them from also being transmitted to the sensor 5 distorting the reading thereof.

[0119] According to an embodiment, the actuation system 1 comprises an electronic processing unit.

[0120] The electronic processing unit is configured to control the actuation system 1 .

[0121] According to an embodiment, the electronic processing unit is configured toreceive, from the at least one sensor 5, the detection of parameters related to the actuation system 1 and is also configured to control the at least one tactile feedback actuator 4 according to the parameters detected by and received from the at least one sensor 5.

[0122] According to an additional aspect of the invention, a braking system 2, in particular of the “BBW” type, comprises at least one brake caliper.

[0123] The braking system 2 further comprises an actuation system 1 as described above.

[0124] Furthermore, the braking system 2 comprises an electronic processing unit electrically connected to the at least one brake caliper and the actuation system 1 .

[0125] The electronic processing unit is configured to actuate the at least one brake caliper upon the detection of an actuation of the actuation system 1 , and in particular upon the detection of an actuation force applied by a driver to the actuation button 3.

[0126] The electronic processing unit is further configured to receive, from the at least one sensor 5, the detection of parameters related to the actuation system 1 , in particular the actuation force applied by a driver to the actuation button 3 and preferably the tactile feedback generable by the tactile feedback actuator 4.

[0127] Furthermore, the electronic processing unit is configured to control the tactile feedback actuator 4 to generate a tactile feedback according to the parameters detected by and received from the at least one sensor 5.
