AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Existing wireless communication systems face challenges in determining an optimal frequency shift for ambient IoT devices, particularly when the receiver lacks successive interference cancellation (SIC) capability, leading to interference and decoding difficulties.

Method used

The proposed solution involves a framework that determines a frequency shift for backscatter communications by ambient IoT devices based on the SIC capability of the receiver. This is achieved by transmitting control signaling to schedule resource measurements and data communications, with the frequency shift being relative to the initial backscatter frequency and based on the measured communication link and SIC capability.

Benefits of technology

This approach improves decoding performance at the receiver by reducing interference and enabling concurrent decoding of multiple backscatter signals, even in scenarios where the receiver lacks SIC capabilities.

Abstract

Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communication are described. A first device may transmit first control signaling that schedules a first resource for measurement of a communication link associated with an ambient internet of things (IoT) device. The first device may also transmit second control signaling that schedules a second resource for communication of a backscattered data signal by the ambient IoT device in accordance with a frequency shift. The frequency shift is relative to a frequency for backscatter communications by the ambient IoT device. The frequency shift is based on the measurement of the communication link and a successive interference cancellation (SIC) capability of a receiver of the backscattered data signal.

[0083] A wireless communications system may include one or more types of communication devices, such as network devices, assisting nodes, intermediate nodes, and ambient internet of things (IoT) devices, among other types of communication devices. A network device may communicate with one or multiple ambient IoT devices  (e.g., radio frequency identification (RFID) -capable devices, energy harvesting (EH) -capable wireless devices, or a combination thereof) directly or indirectly, such as via an assisting node or an intermediate node. An ambient IoT device may be an example of a passive or semi-passive device and, as such, may communicate with the network device via backscatter. For example, the ambient device may receive a waveform (e.g., from the network device, the assisting node, or the intermediate node) , which may activate the ambient IoT device (e.g., activate one or more radio frequency (RF) chains or components of the ambient IoT device) , and which the ambient IoT device may use to send a backscattered signal modulated with data. To reduce interference at the network device, the ambient IoT device may apply a frequency shift to the backscattered data signal, such that the backscattered data signal may be shifted in frequency relative to the incident waveform. The ambient IoT device may use a square wave to generate the frequency-shifted backscattered data signal. In some cases, however, using a square wave to frequency shift the backscattered data signal may introduce one or more harmonics (e.g., signaling at one or more harmonic frequencies of a fundamental frequency of the backscattered data signal) . The one or more harmonics may lead to increased interference at the network device. For example, the one or more harmonics of the backscattered data signal may interfere with one or more other signals (e.g., at the one or more harmonic frequencies) received at the network device and reduce a performance of decoding at the network device. Additionally, some ambient IoT devices may lack power control and concurrently decoding multiple backscattered data signals from multiple ambient IoT devices that backscatter with the same frequency (e.g., apply the same frequency shift) may be relatively difficult. For example, a received power of a first backscattered signal from a first ambient device that is relatively close to the network device may be higher than a received power of a second backscattered signal from a second ambient IoT device that is relatively far from the network device. As such, it may be relatively difficult for the network device to decode the first backscattered signal, for example, if the first backscattered signal is received at the same time and with the same frequency as the second backscattered signal. The network device may use successive interference cancellation (SIC) to improve concurrent decoding of multiple backscatter signals communicated at the same time and with the same frequency. In some cases, however, a receiver of backscatter from the ambient IoT device (e.g., the network device, an assisting node, an intermediate node)  may not support SIC and the network device (e.g., and the ambient IoT device) may lack a mechanism for determining a frequency shift for data backscattering from the ambient IoT device based on the SIC capability of the receiver.

[0084] Various aspects of the present disclosure relate to techniques for frequency shift determination for ambient IoT devices based on a receiver SIC capability and, more specifically, a framework for determining a frequency shift for backscatter communications by an ambient IoT device based on whether a receiver of the backscatter communications supports SIC. For example, in accordance with such techniques, the network device may transmit first control signaling to the ambient IoT device that schedules a first resource for measurement of a communication link associated with the ambient IoT device. The network device may transit the first control signaling to the ambient IoT device directly or indirectly (e.g., via an assisting node) . In some examples, the communication link may include a downlink and the first control signaling may schedule the first resource for measurement of downlink signaling at the ambient IoT device. In some other examples, the communication link may include a backscatter link and the first control signaling may schedule the first resource for measurement of backscatter from the ambient IoT device (e.g., at the network device or the assisting node) . Additionally, the network device may transmit second control signaling that schedules a second resource for communication of a backscattered data signal by the ambient IoT device in accordance with a frequency shift that is relative to a frequency for backscatter communications by the ambient IoT device. Additionally, the frequency shift may be based on the measurement of the communication link and a SIC capability of a receiver of the backscattered data signal. For example, the frequency shift may be determined (e.g., selected) at the ambient IoT device based on the measurement of the downlink signaling. In some other examples, the frequency shift may be determined at the network device (or the assisting node) based on the measurement of the backscatter from the ambient IoT device.

[0085] Particular aspects of the subject matter described herein may be implemented to realize one or more of the following potential advantages. For example, the techniques employed by the described communication devices may provide benefits and enhancements to wireless communication devices operating within a network, including enabling the determination of a frequency shift for data backscattering based on a  receiver SIC capability. In some examples, operations performed by the described communication devices may provide improvements to decoding at the receiver. The operations performed by the described communication devices to improve decoding may include scheduling an ambient IoT device to communicate a backscattered data signal in accordance with a frequency shift that is based on the receiver SIC capability. In some other implementations, operations performed by the described wireless communication devices may also support improvements to user experience and higher data rates, among other benefits.

[0086] Aspects of the disclosure are initially described in the context of wireless communications systems. Aspects of the disclosure are also illustrated in the context of a frequency shift diagram and process flows. Aspects of the disclosure are further illustrated by and described with reference to apparatus diagrams, system diagrams, and flowcharts that relate to frequency shift determination for ambient devices based on a receiver SIC capability.

[0087] FIG. 1 shows an example of a wireless communications system 100 that supports frequency shift determination for ambient devices based on a receiver SIC capability in accordance with one or more aspects of the present disclosure. The wireless communications system 100 may include one or more network entities 105, one or more UEs 115, and a core network 130. In some examples, the wireless communications system 100 may be a Long Term Evolution (LTE) network, an LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) network, an LTE-A Pro network, a New Radio (NR) network, or a network operating in accordance with other systems and radio technologies, including future systems and radio technologies not explicitly mentioned herein.

[0088] The network entities 105 may be dispersed throughout a geographic area to form the wireless communications system 100 and may include devices in different forms or having different capabilities. In various examples, a network entity 105 may be referred to as a network element, a mobility element, a radio access network (RAN) node, or network equipment, among other nomenclature. In some examples, network entities 105 and UEs 115 may wirelessly communicate via one or more communication links 125 (e.g., a radio frequency (RF) access link) . For example, a network entity 105 may support a coverage area 110 (e.g., a geographic coverage area) over which the UEs 115 and the network entity 105 may establish one or more communication links 125.  The coverage area 110 may be an example of a geographic area over which a network entity 105 and a UE 115 may support the communication of signals according to one or more radio access technologies (RATs) .

[0089] The UEs 115 may be dispersed throughout a coverage area 110 of the wireless communications system 100, and each UE 115 may be stationary, or mobile, or both at different times. The UEs 115 may be devices in different forms or having different capabilities. Some example UEs 115 are illustrated in FIG. 1. The UEs 115 described herein may be capable of supporting communications with various types of devices, such as other UEs 115 or network entities 105, as shown in FIG. 1.

[0090] As described herein, a node of the wireless communications system 100, which may be referred to as a network node, or a wireless node, may be a network entity 105 (e.g., any network entity described herein) , a UE 115 (e.g., any UE described herein) , a network controller, an apparatus, a device, a computing system, one or more components, or another suitable processing entity configured to perform any of the techniques described herein. For example, a node may be a UE 115. As another example, a node may be a network entity 105. As another example, a first node may be configured to communicate with a second node or a third node. In one aspect of this example, the first node may be a UE 115, the second node may be a network entity 105, and the third node may be a UE 115. In another aspect of this example, the first node may be a UE 115, the second node may be a network entity 105, and the third node may be a network entity 105. In yet other aspects of this example, the first, second, and third nodes may be different relative to these examples. Similarly, reference to a UE 115, network entity 105, apparatus, device, computing system, or the like may include disclosure of the UE 115, network entity 105, apparatus, device, computing system, or the like being a node. For example, disclosure that a UE 115 is configured to receive information from a network entity 105 also discloses that a first node is configured to receive information from a second node.

[0091] In some examples, network entities 105 may communicate with the core network 130, or with one another, or both. For example, network entities 105 may communicate with the core network 130 via one or more backhaul communication links 120 (e.g., in accordance with an S1, N2, N3, or other interface protocol) . In some examples, network entities 105 may communicate with one another via a backhaul  communication link 120 (e.g., in accordance with an X2, Xn, or other interface protocol) either directly (e.g., directly between network entities 105) or indirectly (e.g., via a core network 130) . In some examples, network entities 105 may communicate with one another via a midhaul communication link 162 (e.g., in accordance with a midhaul interface protocol) or a fronthaul communication link 168 (e.g., in accordance with a fronthaul interface protocol) , or any combination thereof. The backhaul communication links 120, midhaul communication links 162, or fronthaul communication links 168 may be or include one or more wired links (e.g., an electrical link, an optical fiber link) , one or more wireless links (e.g., a radio link, a wireless optical link) , among other examples or various combinations thereof. A UE 115 may communicate with the core network 130 via a communication link 155.

[0092] One or more of the network entities 105 described herein may include or may be referred to as a base station 140 (e.g., a base transceiver station, a radio base station, an NR base station, an access point, a radio transceiver, a NodeB, an eNodeB (eNB) , a next-generation NodeB or a giga-NodeB (either of which may be referred to as a gNB) , a 5G NB, a next-generation eNB (ng-eNB) , a Home NodeB, a Home eNodeB, or other suitable terminology) . In some examples, a network entity 105 (e.g., a base station 140) may be implemented in an aggregated (e.g., monolithic, standalone) base station architecture, which may be configured to utilize a protocol stack that is physically or logically integrated within a single network entity 105 (e.g., a single RAN node, such as a base station 140) .

[0093] In some examples, a network entity 105 may be implemented in a disaggregated architecture (e.g., a disaggregated base station architecture, a disaggregated RAN architecture) , which may be configured to utilize a protocol stack that is physically or logically distributed among two or more network entities 105, such as an integrated access backhaul (IAB) network, an open RAN (O-RAN) (e.g., a network configuration sponsored by the O-RAN Alliance) , or a virtualized RAN (vRAN) (e.g., a cloud RAN (C-RAN) ) . For example, a network entity 105 may include one or more of a central unit (CU) 160, a distributed unit (DU) 165, a radio unit (RU) 170, a RAN Intelligent Controller (RIC) 175 (e.g., a Near-Real Time RIC (Near-RT RIC) , a Non-Real Time RIC (Non-RT RIC) ) , a Service Management and Orchestration (SMO) 180 system, or any combination thereof. An RU 170 may also be referred to as a  radio head, a smart radio head, a remote radio head (RRH) , a remote radio unit (RRU) , or a transmission reception point (TRP) . One or more components of the network entities 105 in a disaggregated RAN architecture may be co-located, or one or more components of the network entities 105 may be located in distributed locations (e.g., separate physical locations) . In some examples, one or more network entities 105 of a disaggregated RAN architecture may be implemented as virtual units (e.g., a virtual CU (VCU) , a virtual DU (VDU) , a virtual RU (VRU) ) .

[0094] The split of functionality between a CU 160, a DU 165, and an RU 170 is flexible and may support different functionalities depending on which functions (e.g., network layer functions, protocol layer functions, baseband functions, RF functions, and any combinations thereof) are performed at a CU 160, a DU 165, or an RU 170. For example, a functional split of a protocol stack may be employed between a CU 160 and a DU 165 such that the CU 160 may support one or more layers of the protocol stack and the DU 165 may support one or more different layers of the protocol stack. In some examples, the CU 160 may host upper protocol layer (e.g., layer 3 (L3) , layer 2 (L2) ) functionality and signaling (e.g., Radio Resource Control (RRC) , service data adaption protocol (SDAP) , Packet Data Convergence Protocol (PDCP) ) . The CU 160 may be connected to one or more DUs 165 or RUs 170, and the one or more DUs 165 or RUs 170 may host lower protocol layers, such as layer 1 (L1) (e.g., physical (PHY) layer) or L2 (e.g., radio link control (RLC) layer, medium access control (MAC) layer) functionality and signaling, and may each be at least partially controlled by the CU 160. Additionally, or alternatively, a functional split of the protocol stack may be employed between a DU 165 and an RU 170 such that the DU 165 may support one or more layers of the protocol stack and the RU 170 may support one or more different layers of the protocol stack. The DU 165 may support one or multiple different cells (e.g., via one or more RUs 170) . In some cases, a functional split between a CU 160 and a DU 165, or between a DU 165 and an RU 170 may be within a protocol layer (e.g., some functions for a protocol layer may be performed by one of a CU 160, a DU 165, or an RU 170, while other functions of the protocol layer are performed by a different one of the CU 160, the DU 165, or the RU 170) . A CU 160 may be functionally split further into CU control plane (CU-CP) and CU user plane (CU-UP) functions. A CU 160 may be connected to one or more DUs 165 via a midhaul communication link 162 (e.g., F1,  F1-c, F1-u) , and a DU 165 may be connected to one or more RUs 170 via a fronthaul communication link 168 (e.g., open fronthaul (FH) interface) . In some examples, a midhaul communication link 162 or a fronthaul communication link 168 may be implemented in accordance with an interface (e.g., a channel) between layers of a protocol stack supported by respective network entities 105 that are in communication via such communication links.

[0095] In wireless communications systems (e.g., wireless communications system 100) , infrastructure and spectral resources for radio access may support wireless backhaul link capabilities to supplement wired backhaul connections, providing an IAB network architecture (e.g., to a core network 130) . In some cases, in an IAB network, one or more network entities 105 (e.g., IAB nodes 104) may be partially controlled by each other. One or more IAB nodes 104 may be referred to as a donor entity or an IAB donor. One or more DUs 165 or one or more RUs 170 may be partially controlled by one or more CUs 160 associated with a donor network entity 105 (e.g., a donor base station 140) . The one or more donor network entities 105 (e.g., IAB donors) may be in communication with one or more additional network entities 105 (e.g., IAB nodes 104) via supported access and backhaul links (e.g., backhaul communication links 120) . IAB nodes 104 may include an IAB mobile termination (IAB-MT) controlled (e.g., scheduled) by DUs 165 of a coupled IAB donor. An IAB-MT may include an independent set of antennas for relay of communications with UEs 115, or may share the same antennas (e.g., of an RU 170) of an IAB node 104 used for access via the DU 165 of the IAB node 104 (e.g., referred to as virtual IAB-MT (vIAB-MT) ) . In some examples, the IAB nodes 104 may include DUs 165 that support communication links with additional entities (e.g., IAB nodes 104, UEs 115) within the relay chain or configuration of the access network (e.g., downstream) . In such cases, one or more components of the disaggregated RAN architecture (e.g., one or more IAB nodes 104 or components of IAB nodes 104) may be configured to operate according to the techniques described herein.

[0096] For instance, an access network (AN) or RAN may include communications between access nodes (e.g., an IAB donor) , IAB nodes 104, and one or more UEs 115. The IAB donor may facilitate connection between the core network 130 and the AN (e.g., via a wired or wireless connection to the core network 130) . That is, an IAB donor  may refer to a RAN node with a wired or wireless connection to core network 130. The IAB donor may include a CU 160 and at least one DU 165 (e.g., and RU 170) , in which case the CU 160 may communicate with the core network 130 via an interface (e.g., a backhaul link) . IAB donor and IAB nodes 104 may communicate via an F1 interface according to a protocol that defines signaling messages (e.g., an F1 AP protocol) . Additionally, or alternatively, the CU 160 may communicate with the core network via an interface, which may be an example of a portion of backhaul link, and may communicate with other CUs 160 (e.g., a CU 160 associated with an alternative IAB donor) via an Xn-C interface, which may be an example of a portion of a backhaul link.

[0097] An IAB node 104 may refer to a RAN node that provides IAB functionality (e.g., access for UEs 115, wireless self-backhauling capabilities) . A DU 165 may act as a distributed scheduling node towards child nodes associated with the IAB node 104, and the IAB-MT may act as a scheduled node towards parent nodes associated with the IAB node 104. That is, an IAB donor may be referred to as a parent node in communication with one or more child nodes (e.g., an IAB donor may relay transmissions for UEs through one or more other IAB nodes 104) . Additionally, or alternatively, an IAB node 104 may also be referred to as a parent node or a child node to other IAB nodes 104, depending on the relay chain or configuration of the AN. Therefore, the IAB-MT entity of IAB nodes 104 may provide a Uu interface for a child IAB node 104 to receive signaling from a parent IAB node 104, and the DU interface (e.g., DUs 165) may provide a Uu interface for a parent IAB node 104 to signal to a child IAB node 104 or UE 115.

[0098] For example, IAB node 104 may be referred to as a parent node that supports communications for a child IAB node, or referred to as a child IAB node associated with an IAB donor, or both. The IAB donor may include a CU 160 with a wired or wireless connection (e.g., a backhaul communication link 120) to the core network 130 and may act as parent node to IAB nodes 104. For example, the DU 165 of IAB donor may relay transmissions to UEs 115 through IAB nodes 104, or may directly signal transmissions to a UE 115, or both. The CU 160 of IAB donor may signal communication link establishment via an F1 interface to IAB nodes 104, and the IAB nodes 104 may schedule transmissions (e.g., transmissions to the UEs 115 relayed from the IAB donor) through the DUs 165. That is, data may be relayed to and from IAB  nodes 104 via signaling via an NR Uu interface to MT of the IAB node 104. Communications with IAB node 104 may be scheduled by a DU 165 of IAB donor and communications with IAB node 104 may be scheduled by DU 165 of IAB node 104.

[0099] In the case of the techniques described herein applied in the context of a disaggregated RAN architecture, one or more components of the disaggregated RAN architecture may be configured to support frequency shift determination for ambient devices based on a receiver SIC capability as described herein. For example, some operations described as being performed by a UE 115 or a network entity 105 (e.g., a base station 140) may additionally, or alternatively, be performed by one or more components of the disaggregated RAN architecture (e.g., IAB nodes 104, DUs 165, CUs 160, RUs 170, RIC 175, SMO 180) .

[0100] A UE 115 may include or may be referred to as a mobile device, a wireless device, a remote device, a handheld device, or a subscriber device, or some other suitable terminology, where the “device” may also be referred to as a unit, a station, a terminal, or a client, among other examples. A UE 115 may also include or may be referred to as a personal electronic device such as a cellular phone, a personal digital assistant (PDA) , a tablet computer, a laptop computer, or a personal computer. In some examples, a UE 115 may include or be referred to as a wireless local loop (WLL) station, an Internet of Things (IoT) device, an Internet of Everything (IoE) device, or a machine type communications (MTC) device, among other examples, which may be implemented in various objects such as appliances, or vehicles, meters, among other examples.

[0101] The UEs 115 described herein may be able to communicate with various types of devices, such as other UEs 115 that may sometimes act as relays as well as the network entities 105 and the network equipment including macro eNBs or gNBs, small cell eNBs or gNBs, or relay base stations, among other examples, as shown in FIG. 1.

[0102] The UEs 115 and the network entities 105 may wirelessly communicate with one another via one or more communication links 125 (e.g., an access link) using resources associated with one or more carriers. The term “carrier” may refer to a set of RF spectrum resources having a defined physical layer structure for supporting the communication links 125. For example, a carrier used for a communication link 125  may include a portion of a RF spectrum band (e.g., a bandwidth part (BWP) ) that is operated according to one or more physical layer channels for a given radio access technology (e.g., LTE, LTE-A, LTE-A Pro, NR) . Each physical layer channel may carry acquisition signaling (e.g., synchronization signals, system information) , control signaling that coordinates operation for the carrier, user data, or other signaling. The wireless communications system 100 may support communication with a UE 115 using carrier aggregation or multi-carrier operation. A UE 115 may be configured with multiple downlink component carriers and one or more uplink component carriers according to a carrier aggregation configuration. Carrier aggregation may be used with both frequency division duplexing (FDD) and time division duplexing (TDD) component carriers. Communication between a network entity 105 and other devices may refer to communication between the devices and any portion (e.g., entity, sub-entity) of a network entity 105. For example, the terms “transmitting, ” “receiving, ” or “communicating, ” when referring to a network entity 105, may refer to any portion of a network entity 105 (e.g., a base station 140, a CU 160, a DU 165, a RU 170) of a RAN communicating with another device (e.g., directly or via one or more other network entities 105) .

[0103] Signal waveforms transmitted via a carrier may be made up of multiple subcarriers (e.g., using multi-carrier modulation (MCM) techniques such as orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) or discrete Fourier transform spread OFDM (DFT-S-OFDM) ) . In a system employing MCM techniques, a resource element may refer to resources of one symbol period (e.g., a duration of one modulation symbol) and one subcarrier, in which case the symbol period and subcarrier spacing may be inversely related. The quantity of bits carried by each resource element may depend on the modulation scheme (e.g., the order of the modulation scheme, the coding rate of the modulation scheme, or both) , such that a relatively higher quantity of resource elements (e.g., in a transmission duration) and a relatively higher order of a modulation scheme may correspond to a relatively higher rate of communication. A wireless communications resource may refer to a combination of an RF spectrum resource, a time resource, and a spatial resource (e.g., a spatial layer, a beam) , and the use of multiple spatial resources may increase the data rate or data integrity for communications with a UE 115.

[0104] The time intervals for the network entities 105 or the UEs 115 may be expressed in multiples of a basic time unit which may, for example, refer to a sampling period of Ts=1 /  (Δfmax·Nf) seconds, for which Δfmax may represent a supported subcarrier spacing, and Nf may represent a supported discrete Fourier transform (DFT) size. Time intervals of a communications resource may be organized according to radio frames each having a specified duration (e.g., 10 milliseconds (ms) ) . Each radio frame may be identified by a system frame number (SFN) (e.g., ranging from 0 to 1023) .

[0105] Each frame may include multiple consecutively-numbered subframes or slots, and each subframe or slot may have the same duration. In some examples, a frame may be divided (e.g., in the time domain) into subframes, and each subframe may be further divided into a quantity of slots. Alternatively, each frame may include a variable quantity of slots, and the quantity of slots may depend on subcarrier spacing. Each slot may include a quantity of symbol periods (e.g., depending on the length of the cyclic prefix prepended to each symbol period) . In some wireless communications systems 100, a slot may further be divided into multiple mini-slots associated with one or more symbols. Excluding the cyclic prefix, each symbol period may be associated with one or more (e.g., Nf) sampling periods. The duration of a symbol period may depend on the subcarrier spacing or frequency band of operation.

[0106] A subframe, a slot, a mini-slot, or a symbol may be the smallest scheduling unit (e.g., in the time domain) of the wireless communications system 100 and may be referred to as a transmission time interval (TTI) . In some examples, the TTI duration (e.g., a quantity of symbol periods in a TTI) may be variable. Additionally, or alternatively, the smallest scheduling unit of the wireless communications system 100 may be dynamically selected (e.g., in bursts of shortened TTIs (sTTIs) ) .

[0107] Physical channels may be multiplexed for communication using a carrier according to various techniques. A physical control channel and a physical data channel may be multiplexed for signaling via a downlink carrier, for example, using one or more of time division multiplexing (TDM) techniques, frequency division multiplexing (FDM) techniques, or hybrid TDM-FDM techniques. A control region (e.g., a control resource set (CORESET) ) for a physical control channel may be defined by a set of symbol periods and may extend across the system bandwidth or a subset of the system  bandwidth of the carrier. One or more control regions (e.g., CORESETs) may be configured for a set of the UEs 115. For example, one or more of the UEs 115 may monitor or search control regions for control information according to one or more search space sets, and each search space set may include one or multiple control channel candidates in one or more aggregation levels arranged in a cascaded manner. An aggregation level for a control channel candidate may refer to an amount of control channel resources (e.g., control channel elements (CCEs) ) associated with encoded information for a control information format having a given payload size. Search space sets may include common search space sets configured for sending control information to multiple UEs 115 and UE-specific search space sets for sending control information to a specific UE 115.

[0108] A network entity 105 may provide communication coverage via one or more cells, for example a macro cell, a small cell, a hot spot, or other types of cells, or any combination thereof. The term “cell” may refer to a logical communication entity used for communication with a network entity 105 (e.g., using a carrier) and may be associated with an identifier for distinguishing neighboring cells (e.g., a physical cell identifier (PCID) , a virtual cell identifier (VCID) , or others) . In some examples, a cell also may refer to a coverage area 110 or a portion of a coverage area 110 (e.g., a sector) over which the logical communication entity operates. Such cells may range from smaller areas (e.g., a structure, a subset of structure) to larger areas depending on various factors such as the capabilities of the network entity 105. For example, a cell may be or include a building, a subset of a building, or exterior spaces between or overlapping with coverage areas 110, among other examples.

[0109] A macro cell generally covers a relatively large geographic area (e.g., several kilometers in radius) and may allow unrestricted access by the UEs 115 with service subscriptions with the network provider supporting the macro cell. A small cell may be associated with a lower-powered network entity 105 (e.g., a lower-powered base station 140) , as compared with a macro cell, and a small cell may operate using the same or different (e.g., licensed, unlicensed) frequency bands as macro cells. Small cells may provide unrestricted access to the UEs 115 with service subscriptions with the network provider or may provide restricted access to the UEs 115 having an association with the small cell (e.g., the UEs 115 in a closed subscriber group (CSG) , the UEs 115  associated with users in a home or office) . A network entity 105 may support one or multiple cells and may also support communications via the one or more cells using one or multiple component carriers.

[0110] In some examples, a carrier may support multiple cells, and different cells may be configured according to different protocol types (e.g., MTC, narrowband IoT (NB-IoT) , enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB) ) that may provide access for different types of devices.

[0111] In some examples, a network entity 105 (e.g., a base station 140, an RU 170) may be movable and therefore provide communication coverage for a moving coverage area 110. In some examples, different coverage areas 110 associated with different technologies may overlap, but the different coverage areas 110 may be supported by the same network entity 105. In some other examples, the overlapping coverage areas 110 associated with different technologies may be supported by different network entities 105. The wireless communications system 100 may include, for example, a heterogeneous network in which different types of the network entities 105 provide coverage for various coverage areas 110 using the same or different radio access technologies.

[0112] The wireless communications system 100 may be configured to support ultra-reliable communications or low-latency communications, or various combinations thereof. For example, the wireless communications system 100 may be configured to support ultra-reliable low-latency communications (URLLC) . The UEs 115 may be designed to support ultra-reliable, low-latency, or critical functions. Ultra-reliable communications may include private communication or group communication and may be supported by one or more services such as push-to-talk, video, or data. Support for ultra-reliable, low-latency functions may include prioritization of services, and such services may be used for public safety or general commercial applications. The terms ultra-reliable, low-latency, and ultra-reliable low-latency may be used interchangeably herein.

[0113] In some examples, a UE 115 may be configured to support communicating directly with other UEs 115 via a device-to-device (D2D) communication link 135 (e.g., in accordance with a peer-to-peer (P2P) , D2D, or sidelink protocol) . In some examples,  one or more UEs 115 of a group that are performing D2D communications may be within the coverage area 110 of a network entity 105 (e.g., a base station 140, an RU 170) , which may support aspects of such D2D communications being configured by (e.g., scheduled by) the network entity 105. In some examples, one or more UEs 115 of such a group may be outside the coverage area 110 of a network entity 105 or may be otherwise unable to or not configured to receive transmissions from a network entity 105. In some examples, groups of the UEs 115 communicating via D2D communications may support a one-to-many (1: M) system in which each UE 115 transmits to each of the other UEs 115 in the group. In some examples, a network entity 105 may facilitate the scheduling of resources for D2D communications. In some other examples, D2D communications may be carried out between the UEs 115 without an involvement of a network entity 105.

[0114] The core network 130 may provide user authentication, access authorization, tracking, Internet Protocol (IP) connectivity, and other access, routing, or mobility functions. The core network 130 may be an evolved packet core (EPC) or 5G core (5GC) , which may include at least one control plane entity that manages access and mobility (e.g., a mobility management entity (MME) , an access and mobility management function (AMF) ) and at least one user plane entity that routes packets or interconnects to external networks (e.g., a serving gateway (S-GW) , a Packet Data Network (PDN) gateway (P-GW) , or a user plane function (UPF) ) . The control plane entity may manage non-access stratum (NAS) functions such as mobility, authentication, and bearer management for the UEs 115 served by the network entities 105 (e.g., base stations 140) associated with the core network 130. User IP packets may be transferred through the user plane entity, which may provide IP address allocation as well as other functions. The user plane entity may be connected to IP services 150 for one or more network operators. The IP services 150 may include access to the Internet, Intranet (s) , an IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) , or a Packet-Switched Streaming Service.

[0115] The wireless communications system 100 may operate using one or more frequency bands, which may be in the range of 300 megahertz (MHz) to 300 gigahertz (GHz) . Generally, the region from 300 MHz to 3 GHz is known as the ultra-high frequency (UHF) region or decimeter band because the wavelengths range from  approximately one decimeter to one meter in length. UHF waves may be blocked or redirected by buildings and environmental features, which may be referred to as clusters, but the waves may penetrate structures sufficiently for a macro cell to provide service to the UEs 115 located indoors. Communications using UHF waves may be associated with smaller antennas and shorter ranges (e.g., less than 100 kilometers) compared to communications using the smaller frequencies and longer waves of the high frequency (HF) or very high frequency (VHF) portion of the spectrum below 300 MHz.

[0116] The wireless communications system 100 may utilize both licensed and unlicensed RF spectrum bands. For example, the wireless communications system 100 may employ License Assisted Access (LAA) , LTE-Unlicensed (LTE-U) radio access technology, or NR technology using an unlicensed band such as the 5 GHz industrial, scientific, and medical (ISM) band. While operating using unlicensed RF spectrum bands, devices such as the network entities 105 and the UEs 115 may employ carrier sensing for collision detection and avoidance. In some examples, operations using unlicensed bands may be based on a carrier aggregation configuration in conjunction with component carriers operating using a licensed band (e.g., LAA) . Operations using unlicensed spectrum may include downlink transmissions, uplink transmissions, P2P transmissions, or D2D transmissions, among other examples.

[0117] A network entity 105 (e.g., a base station 140, an RU 170) or a UE 115 may be equipped with multiple antennas, which may be used to employ techniques such as transmit diversity, receive diversity, multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communications, or beamforming. The antennas of a network entity 105 or a UE 115 may be located within one or more antenna arrays or antenna panels, which may support MIMO operations or transmit or receive beamforming. For example, one or more base station antennas or antenna arrays may be co-located at an antenna assembly, such as an antenna tower. In some examples, antennas or antenna arrays associated with a network entity 105 may be located at diverse geographic locations. A network entity 105 may include an antenna array with a set of rows and columns of antenna ports that the network entity 105 may use to support beamforming of communications with a UE 115. Likewise, a UE 115 may include one or more antenna arrays that may support various  MIMO or beamforming operations. Additionally, or alternatively, an antenna panel may support RF beamforming for a signal transmitted via an antenna port.

[0118] Beamforming, which may also be referred to as spatial filtering, directional transmission, or directional reception, is a signal processing technique that may be used at a transmitting device or a receiving device (e.g., a network entity 105, a UE 115) to shape or steer an antenna beam (e.g., a transmit beam, a receive beam) along a spatial path between the transmitting device and the receiving device. Beamforming may be achieved by combining the signals communicated via antenna elements of an antenna array such that some signals propagating along particular orientations with respect to an antenna array experience constructive interference while others experience destructive interference. The adjustment of signals communicated via the antenna elements may include a transmitting device or a receiving device applying amplitude offsets, phase offsets, or both to signals carried via the antenna elements associated with the device. The adjustments associated with each of the antenna elements may be defined by a beamforming weight set associated with a particular orientation (e.g., with respect to the antenna array of the transmitting device or receiving device, or with respect to some other orientation) .

[0119] The wireless communications system 100 may include one or more ambient IoT devices, which may also be referred to as RFID tags. The ambient IoT devices may lead to reduce energy costs and increase an economic efficiency of the wireless communications system 100. Ambient IoT devices may be passive (or semi-passive) and may communicate with other devices within the wireless communications system 100 via backscatter. That is, an ambient IoT device may communicate information by backscattering a continuous wave signal from another device. To reduce self-interference, the ambient IoT device may apply a frequency shift (square wave) to the backscatter, such that the backscatter may be shifted in frequency relative to the continuous wave. In some cases, however, using a square wave to frequency shift a backscattered signal may introduce harmonics, which may interfere with the backscattered signal at the receiver and reduce the decoding performance of the receiver. Additionally, some ambient IoT devices may lack power control and concurrently decoding multiple backscattered signals from multiple ambient IoT devices that use the same frequency shift may be relatively difficult. For example, a  received power of a first backscattered signal from a first ambient IoT device that is relatively close to the receiver may be higher than a received power of a second backscattered signal from a second ambient IoT device that is relatively far from the receiver. As such, it may be relatively difficult for the receiver to decode the first backscattered signal if the first backscattered signal is received at the same time and with the same frequency as the second backscattered signal. The receiver may use SIC to improve concurrent decoding of multiple backscatter signals communicated at the same time and with the same frequency. However, some receivers may lack SIC capabilities, as well as a mechanism for determining a frequency shift based on the SIC capability of the receivers.

[0120] In some examples, however, a receiver (e.g., a network entity 105, a UE 115, a base station 140) may support one or more techniques for frequency shift determination for ambient devices based on a receiver SIC capability, as described herein. For example, in accordance with such techniques, the network device may measure a received power of backscatter from one or multiple ambient IoT devices and select a respective frequency shift for each ambient IoT device based on the measured received power and whether the receiver supports SIC. The receiver may include the network device or another device, such as a device used to assist uplink communications for the network device. If the receiver is the other device, the other device may indicate an SIC capability of the other device to the network device (e.g., for the frequency shift determination) . Additionally, or alternatively, in accordance with such techniques, the ambient IoT device may measure a received power (e.g., signal quality) of downlink signaling and may select the frequency shift based on the measured received power. In such an example, the network device may configure the ambient IoT device with one or more sets of candidate frequency shifts from which the ambient IoT device may select the frequency shift. The one or more candidate frequency shifts may be based on the SIC capability of the receiver. In some examples, determining a frequency shift for backscatter based on an SIC capability of a receiver of the backscatter may lead to improved decoding at the receiver, among other benefits.

[0121] FIG. 2 shows an example of a wireless communications system 200 that supports frequency shift determination for ambient devices based on a receiver SIC capability in accordance with one or more aspects of the present disclosure. In some  examples, the wireless communications system 200 may implement or be implemented at one or more aspects of the wireless communications system 100. For example, the wireless communications system 200 may include a network device 205, which may be an example of a network entity 105 or a UE 115 illustrated by and as described with reference to FIG. 1. In some examples, the network device 205 may be an example of a repeater, a relay, or an IAB node. Additionally, the wireless communications system 200 may include an ambient IoT device 210-a and an ambient IoT device 210-b. The ambient IoT devices 210 may be examples of passive IoT device, semi-passive IoT devices, or active IoT devices.

[0122] For example, the ambient IoT devices 210 may be examples of passive devices (e.g., passive nodes, such as type A devices) , energy storage intermittent passive devices (e.g., energy storage nodes, such as type B1 devices) , semi-passive devices (e.g., semi-passive nodes, such as type B2 devices) , active devices, radio frequency-front-end devices (e.g., type C1 devices) , normal receiver devices with extended discontinuous reception (eDRX) (e.g., type C2 devices) , among other examples. In some examples, a passive device may support radio frequency incident energy harvesting and may be on continuously (or discontinuously) . For example, a passive device (e.g., a passive tag) may be powered by radio frequency power, such as by a continuous radio frequency wave. In some examples, the passive device may communicate using backscattered signals (e.g., may be incapable of carrier wave generation or power amplification) . In some examples, a passive device may use a rectifier for radio frequency energy harvesting. In some examples, an energy storage intermittent passive device may support radio frequency energy harvesting (e.g., from a UE) , ambient energy harvesting, intermittent communication, and may include an amplifier, such as for downlink and uplink communications.

[0123] In some examples, a semi-passive device (e.g., a semi-passive tag) may support ambient energy harvesting, a button battery, may be on continuously (or discontinuously) , and may include an amplifier, such as for downlink and uplink communications. For example, a semi-passive device may be powered by energy harvesting (e.g., solar) and include a power amplifier (e.g., for reflected signals) . Additionally, or alternatively, a semi-passive device may communicate using  backscattered signals. A semi-passive device may support FDD, for example with a carrier offset (e.g., for uplink signals) .

[0124] In some examples, an active device (e.g., an active tag, an energy harvesting network node) may support energy harvesting and radio frequency modulation for uplink. For example, an active device may obtain power using (e.g., be powered by) energy harvesting and may be capable of radio frequency carrier wave generation. Additionally, or alternatively, an active device may transmit signals using a transmit power amplifier. In some examples, an uplink transmit power associated with an active device may be decoupled from a downlink received signal power. Additionally, or alternatively, an active device may support FDD. In some examples, an active device may support FDD with a carrier offset.

[0125] In some examples, a radio frequency-front-end device may support a suitable power supply for a radio frequency-front-end transceiver and a radio frequency-front-end transceiver. Additionally, or alternatively, a radio frequency-front-end device may be on continuously (or discontinuously) and may include an amplifier, for example for downlink and uplink communications. A normal receiver devices with eDRX may support a suitable power supply, a front-end transceiver (e.g., a full front-end transceiver) , and eDRX with relatively low traffic (e.g., extremely low traffic) . In some examples, eDRX may be leveraged to achieve relatively low (e.g., extremely low) average power consumption. Leveraging eDRX to achieve relatively low average power consumption may, in some instances, lead to relatively high device costs and relatively high latency.

[0126] In some examples, the wireless communications system 200 may support radio frequency identification (RFID) . RFID is a relatively rapidly growing technology impacting multiple industries, for example, due to the applicability (e.g., and economic potential) of RFID for inventory or asset management inside and outside warehouses, IoT, sustainable sensor networks in factories or agriculture, and smart homes, among other examples. RFID may include one or more relatively small transponders, or tags (e.g., microchips, devices) , emitting an information-bearing signal upon receiving a signal. In some examples, RFID may be operated without battery, with a relatively low operating expense (OPEX) , low maintenance cost, and long-life circle. The ambient IoT device 210 may support RFID. That is, the ambient IoT device 210 may be examples of  passive, semi-passive, or active RFID devices (e.g., tags) . Passive RFID devices may harvest energy over the air to power the transmission or reception circuitry. Semi-passive or active RFID device may include a battery (e.g., and may therefore be associated with higher costs relative to passive RFID devices) .

[0127] The ambient IoT devices 210 (e.g., RFID devices) may communicate with the network device 205 using backscatter 220 (e.g., backscatter signals) . For example, the network device 205 may transmit a waveform 215-a (e.g., an activation waveform, an incident waveform) to the ambient IoT device 210-a via a downlink 225-a. Similarly, the network device 205 may transmit a waveform 215-b (e.g., an activation waveform, an incident waveform) to the ambient IoT device 210-b via a downlink 225-b. To communicate with the network device 205, the ambient IoT device 210-a may backscatter (e.g., reflect, scatter, redirect) at least a portion of the waveform 215-a via a backscatter link 226-a and the ambient IoT device 210-b may backscatter (e.g., reflect, scatter, redirect) at least a portion of the waveform 215-b via a backscatter link 226-b. That is, the ambient IoT device 210-a may use at least a portion of the waveform 215-ato send (e.g., communicate) backscatter 220-a to the network device 205 via the backscatter link 226-a and the ambient IoT device 210-b may use at least a portion of the waveform 215-b to send (e.g., communicate) backscatter 220-b to the network device 205 via the backscatter link 226-b.

[0128] In some examples, the ambient IoT devices 210 may backscatter without a frequency shift. For example, the ambient IoT device 210-a may receive the waveform 215-a at a first frequency, which the ambient IoT device 210-a may modulate with a data message (e.g., using amplitude shift keying (ASK) or phase-shift keying (PSK) ) . As such, the ambient IoT device 210-a may send (e.g., communicate) a backscattered data signal 240-a of the waveform 215-a that is modulated with the data message. In such an example, the backscattered data signal 240-a may be sent at the same frequency as the waveform 215-a (e.g., the first frequency) . In some cases, however, backscattering (e.g., sending a backscattered signal) at the same frequency as the incident waveform (e.g., the waveform 315-a) may result in interference. For instance, the ambient IoT device 210-a may use the waveform 215-a to send the backscattered data signal 240-a via the backscatter link 226-a while the network device 205 concurrently transmits the waveform 215-a via the downlink 225-a. In such an example,  the backscattered data signal 240-a may have the same frequency as the waveform 215-a, which may lead to self-interference at the network device 205. That is, the waveform 215-a transmitted by the network device 205 may interfere with the backscattered data signal 240-a received by the network device 205. Self-interference may reduce a performance of decoding at the network device 205. In other words, the network device 205 may not be able to efficiently decode the data message of the backscattered data signal 240-a due to self-interference.

[0129] In some other examples, to reduce (e.g., minimize) self-interference at the network device 205, the ambient IoT device 210-a may backscatter with a frequency shift (Δf) . For example, the ambient IoT device 210-a may support an increased quantity of modulation schemes in which the backscattered data signal 240-a may be shifted in frequency relative to the waveform 215-a. That is, in some examples, the backscattered data signal 240-a may be an example of a frequency-shifted backscattered signal. For instance, the network device 205 may transmit the waveform 215-a at the first frequency and the ambient IoT device 210-a may use the waveform 215-a to generate the backscattered data signal 240-a (e.g., modulated with a data message) at a second frequency, which may be different from the first frequency. As such, the network device 205 may concurrently transmit the waveform 215-a on the first frequency (e.g., a first channel frequency) and receive the backscattered data signal 240-a (e.g., the frequency shifted backscattered signal) on a second frequency (e.g., a second channel frequency) , which may reduce self-interference at the network device 205 and improve decoding of the data message.

[0130] In some examples, the ambient IoT device 210-a (or the ambient IoT device 210-b) may use one or more square wave techniques to generate frequency shifted backscattered signals. For instance, a square wave may approximate a sinusoidal waveform, in which the amplitude of the square wave may alternate at a relatively consistent (e.g., steady) frequency, which may be between two values (e.g., between a fixed minimum and fixed maximum value) . As such, the ambient IoT devices 210 may generate a square wave to approximate a sinusoidal wave. For example, the ambient IoT devices 210 (e.g., each of the ambient IoT devices 210) may generate a square waveform (e.g., a square wave) with a frequency shift relative to an incident waveform  (e.g., the waveform 215-a) . From Fourier analysis, the square wave may be expressed in accordance with Equation 1:

[0131] in which n is the n-th odd integral harmonic and fshift is the freuqnecy shift relative to the frequency of the incident waveform (e.g., the first frequency) .

[0132] In some cases, however, transmission of a square waveform may introduce interference associated with one or more harmonics of the square waveform. For instance, the ambient IoT device 210-a may backscatter using a square wave associated with a first frequency (e.g., a first channel frequency) and a third harmonic of the square wave may have a second frequency (e.g., a second channel frequency) . As such, the third harmonic of the square wave may interfere with other communications on the second frequency (e.g., the second channel frequency) , such as communications from one or more other ambient IoT devices (e.g., the ambient IoT device 210-b) . In other words, while a frequency shift may increase the connectivity of network for an ambient IoT device (e.g., may improve communications between the network device 205 and the ambient IoT device 210-a) , using a square wave to approximate a sine wave (e.g., for the frequency-shifted signal) may introduce additional interference (e.g., due to the harmonics) , which may impact the connectivity of the network for one or more other ambient IoT devices (e.g., other ambient IoT devices backscattering at one or more harmonics of the frequency-shifted signal) .

[0133] In some examples, the network may use power control to compensate for interference (e.g., the additional interference due to harmonics) . However, some ambient IoT devices may lack power control and concurrently decoding multiple backscattered data signals from multiple ambient IoT devices may be relatively difficult. For example, the wireless communications system 200 may be susceptible to a near-far problem in which detecting (or filtering out) a weaker signal (e.g., send from a relatively far device) amongst stronger signals (e.g., sent from relatively close devices) may be relatively difficult. For example, the ambient IoT device 210-b may be located closer to the network device 205 than the ambient IoT device 210-a. As such, a received power of the backscattered data signal 240-b from the ambient IoT device 210-b may be higher than a received power of a backscattered data signal 240-a from the ambient IoT  device 210-a. As such, it may be relatively difficult for the network device 205 to decode the backscattered data signal 240-a if the backscattered data signal 240-b is received at the same time and with the same frequency as the backscattered data signal 240-a.

[0134] Additionally, or alternatively, the network device 205 may use SIC to compensate for interference (e.g., the additional interference due to harmonics) and improve concurrent decoding of multiple backscatter signals communicated at the same time and with the same frequency. That is, to compensate for interference due to harmonics (and to compensate for the near-far problem) , the network device 205 may use SIC. SIC may improve the connectivity to the network by enabling multiple users (e.g., with suitable power separation) to communicate information using the same resource (e.g., both the same time and the same frequency resource) concurrently. However, some receivers of backscattered signals (e.g., the network device 205, one or more other devices) may lack one or more SIC capabilities.

[0135] As illustrated in the example of FIG. 2, the network device 205 (and the ambient IoT devices 210) may support one or more techniques for frequency shift determination for ambient devices based on a receiver SIC capability, as described herein. For example, in accordance with such techniques, the network device 205 may determine a frequency shift for the ambient IoT device 210-a (or the ambient IoT device 210-b) based on whether the network device 205 (or another receiver of a backscattered signal from one or both of the ambient IoT devices 210) supports SIC. For instance, the network device 205 may be an example of a resource scheduler and may transmit first control signaling to the ambient IoT device 210-a. The first control signaling may include a measurement scheduling indication 230 that schedules a first resource (e.g., a first time resource or a first frequency resource, or both) for measurement of a communication link associated with the ambient IoT device 210-a. Additionally, the network device 205 may transmit second control signaling to the ambient IoT device 210-a. The second control signaling may include a data scheduling indication 235 that schedules a second resource for communication of the backscattered data signal 240-aby the ambient IoT device 210-a in accordance with a frequency shift. The frequency shift may be relative to a frequency for backscatter communications by the ambient IoT device 210-a (e.g., relative to the frequency of the waveform 215-a or another waveform  used to generate the backscattered data signal 240-a) . The frequency shift may be based on the measurement of the communication link and a SIC capability of a receiver of the backscattered data signal (e.g., whether the network device 205 supports SIC) .

[0136] In some examples, the communication link may include a backscatter link. For example, the network device 205 (e.g., the resource scheduler, a network entity, an IAB node, a UE, a repeater) may determine the frequency shift for the ambient IoT device 210-a (e.g., for data backscattering by the ambient IoT device 210-a) based on one or more measurements of the backscatter link 226-a. In such an example, the network device 205 may schedule the first resource for the measurement of the backscatter link 226-a. In other words, the measurement scheduling indication 230 may include a first indication that schedules the first resource for measurement of the backscatter 220-a from the ambient IoT device 210-a via the backscatter link 226-a. In such an example, the frequency shift for the ambient IoT device 210-a may be based on the measurement of the backscatter 220-a. For example, the network device 205 (or another receiver of the backscatter 220-a) may measure, over the first resource, a received power value associated with the backscatter 220-a from the ambient IoT device 210-a via the backscatter link 226-a. In such an example, the network device 205 may determine the frequency shift for the backscattered data signal 240-a based on the measured received power value and the SIC capability of the receiver (e.g., based on whether the network device 205 or the other receiver supports SIC or not) . In some examples, the network device 205 may support SIC. In such examples, the frequency shift for the backscattered data signal 240-a may be based on a threshold power difference of the SIC. In other words, the SIC capability may correspond to a capability of the receiver (e.g., the network devices 205) to support SIC and, as such, the frequency shift may be based on a power difference threshold associated with (e.g., sufficient for) decoding the backscattered data signal 240-a using SIC.

[0137] In some examples, the network device 205 may schedule different ambient IoT devices to backscatter (e.g., for measurement of the backscatter link 226-a or the backscatter link 226-b, or both) at different times. For example, the backscatter 220-aand the backscatter 220-b may be associated with the same frequency. As such, the network device 205 may transmit a second indication (e.g., via another measurement scheduling indication) that schedules a third resource for measurement of the  backscatter 220-b from the ambient IoT device 210-b. In such an example, the third resource may correspond to (e.g., may be, may include) a different time domain resource than the first resource. In other words, the first resource and the third resource may correspond to different time domain resources.

[0138] In some other examples, the network device 205 may schedule different ambient IoT devices to backscatter at different frequencies. For example, the backscatter 220-a may be associated with a first frequency and the backscatter 220-b may be associated with a second frequency that is different from the first frequency. In some examples, such as examples in which the network device 205 supports SIC, a difference between the first frequency and the second frequency may satisfy a threshold frequency difference. The threshold frequency different may be based on one or more first harmonics associated with the first frequency and one or more second harmonics associated with the second frequency. For example, the network may schedule the ambient IoT devices to backscatter at different frequencies such the difference between the first frequency and the second frequency provides a sufficient frequency separation such that interference (e.g., impact) from the harmonics of the first frequency and the second frequency may be neglected. In such examples, the network device 205 may transmit a second indication (e.g., via another measurement scheduling indication) that schedules the first resource for measurement of the backscatter 220-b from the ambient IoT device 210-b. That is, the network device 205 may schedule the ambient IoT devices 210 to backscatter at the same time.

[0139] In some examples, the network device 205 may determine that the ambient IoT devices 210 have a suitable power separation and may schedule the ambient IoT devices 210 with the same frequency shift. For example, the network device 205 may transmit the second control signaling that schedules the communication of the backscattered data signal 240-a from the ambient IoT device 210-a device in accordance with the frequency shift and third control signaling that schedules the second resource for communication of the backscattered data signal 240-b from the ambient IoT device 210-b in accordance with the frequency shift. The network device 205 may schedule the ambient IoT devices 210 to backscatter with the same frequency shift based on a power difference between a first received power value associated with the backscatter 220-afrom the ambient IoT device 210-a and a second received power value associated with  the backscatter 220-b from the ambient IoT device 210-b satisfying the power difference threshold. In some examples, the near-far effect (also referred to herein as the near-far problem) may be utilized to obtain a suitable power difference (e.g., if the ambient IoT device 210 lack one or more power control capabilities) . For example, the power difference between the backscatter 220-a and the backscatter 220-b satisfying the power difference threshold may be based on a first spatial distance between the network device 205 and the ambient IoT device 210-a being different from (e.g., less than) a second spatial distance between the network device 205 and the ambient IoT device 210-b. That is, the power difference between the backscatter 220-a and the backscatter 220-b satisfying the power difference threshold may be based on the ambient IoT device 210-b being closer to the network device 205 than the ambient IoT device 210-a.

[0140] In some examples, the network device 205 may schedule the ambient IoT devices with different frequency shifts. For example, the network device 205 may transmit the second control signaling that schedules the communication of the backscattered data signal 240-a from the ambient IoT device 210-a device in accordance with the frequency shift and may transmit third control signaling that schedules the second resource for communication of the backscattered data signal 240-b from the ambient IoT device 210-b in accordance with a second frequency shift. In some examples, the network device 205 may schedule one ambient IoT device (e.g., the ambient IoT device 210-a) at the nth harmonic of another ambient IoT device (e.g., the ambient IoT device 210-b) . For example, the frequency shift of the backscattered data signal 240-a may correspond to a first frequency and the second frequency shift of the backscattered data signal 240-b may correspond to a second frequency in which the first frequency is the nth harmonic of the second frequency (e.g., the 3rd harmonic or some other harmonic of the second frequency) .

[0141] In some examples, the network device 205 (e.g., the resource decoder) may decode the data messages of the backscattered data signals 240 from the ambient IoT devices 210 concurrently. Accordingly, the network device 205 (e.g., the resource scheduler) may select the frequency shift for the ambient IoT device 210-a and the second frequency shift for the ambient IoT device 210-b such that the power difference between the backscattered power of the backscattered data signal 240-a from the ambient IoT device 210-a and the interference power evaluated through the summation  of one or more (e.g., all) interfering signal powers (e.g., the harmonics from the backscattered data signal 240-b from the ambient IoT device 210-b) is suitable for decoding the data message of the backscattered data signal 240-a received from the ambient IoT device 210-a. In other words, the network device 205 (e.g., the resource scheduler) may select the first frequency shift and the second frequency shift such that a power difference between a received power value associated with the first frequency (of the frequency shift) and an interference power value associated with the second frequency (e.g., of the second frequency shift) satisfies a power difference threshold for concurrently decoding the backscattered data signal 240-a and the backscattered data signal 240-b. The interference power value may correspond to a summation of one or more received power values associated with one or more harmonics of the second frequency.

[0142] In some other examples, the network device 205 (e.g., the resource scheduler) may decode the data message of the backscattered data signal 240-b from the ambient IoT device 210-b first, and then subsequently decode the data message of the backscattered data signal 240-a from the ambient IoT device 210-a. In such an example, a power constraint for the ambient IoT device 210-a may be reduced (e.g., there may be no power constraint for the ambient IoT device 210-a) . For example, the first frequency being the nth harmonic of the second frequency may be based on the SIC capability including a capability of the network device 205 (e.g., the receiver) to decode the backscattered data signal 240-a after the backscattered data signal 240-b (e.g., using SIC) . The impact of the harmonics of the second frequency may be directional interference and, as such, the backscattered data signal 240-b from the ambient IoT device 210-b may cause harmonic interference (e.g., 3rd harmonic interference) to the backscattered data signal 240-a from the ambient IoT device 210-a. Therefore, the network device 205 may use SIC to first decode the backscattered data signal 240-b, which may not experience interference from the backscattered data signal 240-a from the ambient IoT device 210-a, and then subsequently decode the backscattered data signal 240-a from the ambient IoT device 210-a. In other words, the backscattered data signal 240-b from the ambient IoT device 210-b may be decoded and then the backscattered data signal 240-a from the ambient IoT device 210-a may be decoded subsequently through SIC.

[0143] In some other examples, the communication link may include a downlink. For example, the ambient IoT device 210-a may select the frequency shift based on one or more downlink measurements. That is, the measurement scheduling indication 230 may schedule the first resource for a signal quality measurement (e.g., a signal to interference plus noise ratio (SINR) measurement, a reference signal received power (RSRP) measurement, or a reference signal strength indicator (RSSI) measurement) of downlink signaling 245 from the network device 205 via the downlink 225-a. In such an example, the frequency shift may be based on a value of the signal quality measurement. In some examples, the network device 205 may indicate one or more measured downlink quality ranges for one or more frequency shifts (e.g., a respective measured downlink quality range for each frequency shift of the one or more frequency shifts) . For example, the network device 205 may transmit an indication of a respective range of signal quality values (e.g., a measured downlink quality range) associated with each frequency shift of a set of multiple frequency shifts for backscatter communication by the ambient IoT device 210-a. In such an example, the ambient IoT device may select the frequency shift from the set of multiple frequency shifts based on the value of the downlink signal quality measurement being within a range of signal quality values that is associated with the frequency shift.

[0144] In some examples, more than one ambient IoT device may measure a value of downlink signal quality within the range of signal quality values that is associated with the frequency shift. In other words, more than one ambient IoT device may experience (e.g., measure) a downlink signaling quality that falls into the same downlink quality range (and may therefore select the same frequency shift) . In such examples, the ambient IoT devices may determine whether to backscatter (e.g., whether to transmit the backscattered data signal 240-a in accordance with the frequency shift) based on a query (Q) parameter of a Q protocol for ambient IoT devices. In other words, the ambient IoT devices may determine whether backscatter based on a Q-based response in which an ambient IoT device that choose a Q value that satisfies a condition. As an illustrative example, an ambient IoT device with a Q value such that 2Q-1=0 may backscatter. For example, the network device 205 may receive the backscattered data signal 240-a from the ambient IoT device 210-a in accordance with the frequency shift based on the ambient IoT device 210-a being associated with (e.g.,  obtaining, generating, selecting, being assigned) a Q parameter that satisfies the condition.

[0145] The Q protocol may enable the ambient IoT devices 210 to communicate one by one in a time domain. In some examples, as part of the Q protocol, an ambient IoT device (e.g., each of the ambient IoT devices 210) may randomly generate a value. The randomly generated value may determine (e.g., identify) a time domain resource (e.g., a slot) which the respective ambient IoT device may use to backscatter. In some examples of a Q protocol, a Query or QueryRep command may be used to denote a start of the time domain resource (e.g., slot) . In some examples, some ambient IoT devices may have a response (e.g., backscatter) to second in the slot. In such an example, the slot may be relatively long (e.g., longer) , otherwise (e.g., if no ambient IoT device response) the slot may be relatively short (e.g., shorter) . Additionally, or alternatively, the slot duration may be determined at the network device 205 (e.g., the receiver, the reader) . In some examples, using a Q protocol may reduce collisions, for example, between responses transmitted from multiple ambient IoT devices. In some examples, a random access preamble index may indicate for the Q protocol to be used with some (e.g., dedicated) resources for the indicated ambient IoT devices (e.g., RFID tags) and with a default value of Q or a value of Q that may be provided in another filed (e.g., included in control information) .

[0146] In some examples, the downlink quality range (e.g., each downlink quality range) may correspond to more than one frequency shift. For example, each range of downlink signal quality values may be associated with a set of frequency shifts. In some examples, the network device 205 may configure a map between multiple sets of frequency shifts and a respective range of downlink signal strengths (E) in accordance with Table 1: in which the values of E may each correspond to a respective downlink quality value (e.g., RSRP value, SINR value, RSSI value) and Eu1, 1>Eu1, 2>…>EuN, 2> El1, 1>…>ElN, 1>ElN, 2. Additionally, M, N, u, and l may correspond to indices and the values of M, N, u, and l may be different. An ambient IoT device (e.g., each ambient IoT device) may randomly select a frequency shift from the set of frequency shifts, or the ambient IoT device may hash a frequency shift, for example, based on an identifier of the ambient IoT device. For example, the ambient IoT device 210-a may randomly select the frequency shift for the backscattered data signal 240-a from the set of frequency shifts associated with the range of downlink signal quality values. Alternatively, the ambient IoT device 210-a may select the frequency shift for the backscattered data signal 240-a from the set of frequency shifts associated with the range of signal quality values based on an identifier of the ambient IoT device 210-a. In some examples, the backscattered data signal 240-a may include a backscattered preamble for initial access and enabling the ambient IoT device 210-a to select the frequency shift for the backscatter preamble may improve the initial access. The signaling shown to be communicated between the network device 205 and the ambient IoT devices 210 may be communicated in a different order than the order shown in FIG. 2.

[0147] FIG. 3 shows an example of a wireless communications system 300 that supports frequency shift determination for ambient devices based on a receiver SIC capability in accordance with one or more aspects of the present disclosure. In some examples, the wireless communications system 300 may implement or be implemented at one or more aspects of the wireless communications system 100 and the wireless communications system 200. For example, the wireless communications system 300 may include a network device 305, which may be an example of a network device illustrated by and described with reference to FIGs. 1 and 2. For instance, the network device 305 may be an example of a network entity, a UE, a repeater, a relay, or an IAB node.

[0148] The wireless communications system may support one or more connectivity topologies for ambient IoT networks and ambient IoT devices. For example, the wireless communications system 300 may include one or more ambient IoT devices (e.g., an ambient IoT device 310-a and an ambient IoT device 310-b) . The ambient IoT  devices 310 may be examples ambient IoT devices illustrated by and described with reference to FIGs. 1 and 2. For instance, the ambient IoT devices 310 may be examples of passive IoT device, semi-passive IoT devices, or active IoT devices. In accordance with such topologies, the ambient IoT devices 310 may be provided with a carrier wave (e.g., a continuous wave signal) from the network device 305 or one or more other nodes, which may be inside or outside the topology. For example, the wireless communications system 300 may include one or more assisting nodes (e.g., an assisting node 306) . The assisting node 306 may be an example of a network entity, a relay, an IAB node, a UE, a repeater, or another device capable of ambient IoT. Although not illustrated in the example of FIG. 3, the wireless communications system 300 may also support one or more intermediate nodes (e.g., a relay, an IAB node, a UE, a repeater, another device capable of ambient IoT) . In some examples, the network device 305 and the assisting node 306 (e.g., or an intermediary node) may be multiple network entities or multiple UEs, respectively. Communication links used in the topology (e.g., each respective communication link used in each topology) may be bi-directional or unidirectional. In some examples, a mixture of indoor and outdoor placement of one or more nodes (e.g., the network device 305, the assisting node 306, an intermediary node) may be regarded as a network implementation choice. The connectivity topologies may include, but may not imply, the existence of multi-hop assisting or intermediate nodes.

[0149] The wireless communications system 300 may support a first connectivity topology in which the network device 305 (e.g., a base station) may directly communicate with the ambient IoT devices 310. In accordance with the first connectivity topology, a network device transmitting to an ambient IoT device may be the same as, or may be different from, a network device receiving from the ambient IoT device. The wireless communications system 300 may support a second connectivity topology in which the network device 305 (e.g., a base station) may communicate with the ambient IoT devices 310 via one or more intermediate nodes, which may be one or more relays, IAB nodes, UEs, repeaters, or other devices which may be capable of ambient IoT. The wireless communications system 300 may support a third connectivity topology in which the network device 305 (e.g., a base station) may communicate with the ambient IoT devices 310 via one or more assisting nodes. In such an example, the network device 305 may use the one or more assisting nodes to communicate with the  ambient IoT devices 310 in the uplink direction or the downlink direction. The network device communicating with an ambient IoT device via an assisting node in the downlink direction may be the same as, or may be different from, the network device receiving from the ambient IoT device via an assisting node in the uplink direction. In some examples, the wireless communications system 300 may support a fourth connectivity topology in which the ambient IoT devices 310 may communicate directly with one or more UEs.

[0150] In some examples, the ambient IoT devices 310 may backscatter with a frequency shift to reduce (e.g., avoid) self-interference. The frequency shift may be determined based on measurement of a respective communication link (e.g., a direct link) between the ambient IoT devices 310 and a resource scheduler, such as the network device 305. In some examples, however, the network device 305 may use the assisting node 306 to assist downlink or uplink communication at the network device 305. That is, the network device 305 may communicate with the assisting node 306 via a communication link 327. In some examples, the communication link 327 may be a downlink and the assisting node 306 may assist the network device 305 with downlink communication by transmitting (e.g., relaying, repeating, forwarding) downlink signaling received from the network device 305 via the communication link 327 to the ambient IoT device 310-a via a downlink 325-b. In some other examples, the communication link 327 may be an uplink and the assisting node 306 may assist the network device 305 with uplink communication by transmitting (e.g., relaying, repeating, forwarding) backscattered signaling (e.g., data messages in a backscattered data signal) received from the ambient IoT device 310-a via a backscatter link 326-b to the network device 305 via the communication link 327. In such examples, the network device 305 may use the assisting node 306 (e.g., may transmit additional signaling to the assisting node 306, may receive additional signaling from the assisting node 306) to assist the frequency shift determination.

[0151] As illustrated in the example of FIG. 3, the network device 305 (as well as the ambient IoT devices 310 and the assisting node 306) may support one or more techniques for frequency shift determination for ambient devices based on a receiver SIC capability, as described herein. For example, in accordance with such techniques, the network device 305 may use the assisting node 306 to assist in the determinization  of a frequency shift for the ambient IoT device 310-a (or the ambient IoT device 310-b) based on whether a receiver (e.g., the network device 305 or the assisting node 306) supports SIC.

[0152] In some examples, the network device 205 may use the assisting node 306 to assist downlink communication (e.g., with the ambient IoT device 310-a) . In such examples, the network device 305 (e.g., a gNB) may determine a frequency shift for backscatter from the ambient IoT device 310-a (e.g., for a backscattered data signal 340-a) based on one or more received power measurements (e.g., SINR measurements, RSRP measurements, RSSI measurements) . For example, the network device 305 may determine a frequency shift for backscatter from the ambient IoT device 310-a based on one or more received power measurements at the ambient IoT device 310-a of the downlink 325-b (e.g., of downlink signaling 345-b transmitted via the downlink 325-b) .

[0153] Additionally, or alternatively, the network device 305 may determine a frequency shift for backscatter from the ambient IoT device 310-a based on one or more received power measurements of a backscatter link 326-a between the ambient IoT device 310-a and the network device 305 (e.g., of backscatter 320-a sent via the backscatter link 326-a) . The network device 305 may transmit first control signaling that includes a measurement scheduling indication to the ambient IoT device 310-a via the assisting node 306 (e.g., a device associated with assisting downlink communications by the network device 305) . That is, the network may transmit scheduling for one or more backscatter link measurements (or downlink measurements) to the assisting node 306 and the assisting node 306 may forward the scheduling to ambient IoT device 310-a. For example, the network device 305 may transmit a measurement scheduling indication 330-b to the assisting node 306 via the communication link 327 and the assisting node may transmit (e.g., forward) the measurement scheduling indication 330-b to the ambient IoT device 310-a via the downlink 325-b. In other words, the network device 305 may transmit backscattering scheduling for measurement to the assisting node 306 and the assisting node 306 may forward the scheduling to ambient IoT device 310-a. In such an example, the measurement scheduling indication 330-b may schedule a first resource for measurement of the backscatter 320-a from the ambient IoT device 310-a via the backscatter link 326-a. The assisting node 306 may transmit a waveform 315-b to the  ambient IoT device 310-a, which the ambient IoT device 310-a may use to generate (e.g., send) the backscatter 320-a for the measurement at the network device 305. The network device 305 may determine the frequency shift based on the measurement of the backscatter 320-a and whether the network device 305 supports SIC.

[0154] The network may schedule data backscattering based on the scheduled measurement (e.g., an uplink measurement) . For example, the network device 305 may transmit second control signaling that includes a data scheduling indication 335-b to the ambient IoT device 310-a via the assisting node 306. That is, the network device 305 may transmit the data scheduling indication 335-b to the assisting node 306 via the communication link 327 and the assisting node may transmit (e.g., forward) the data scheduling indication 335-b to the ambient IoT device 310-a via the downlink 325-b. The data scheduling indication 335-b may schedule a second resource for communication of a backscattered data signal 340-a by the ambient IoT device 310-a in accordance with a frequency shift relative to a frequency for backscatter communications by the ambient IoT device 310-a (e.g., in accordance with the determined frequency shift) . The determined frequency shift may be based on the measurement of the backscatter link 326-a (e.g., the measurement of the backscatter 320-a sent via the backscatter link 326-a) and an SIC capability of a receiver of the backscattered data signal 340-a (e.g., whether the network device 305 supports SIC) .

[0155] In some examples, the ambient IoT device 310-a may backscatter for measurement at a different time than one or more other ambient IoT devices (e.g., the ambient IoT device 310-b) . In other words, different ambient IoT devices may backscatter at different times. Different ambient IoT devices backscattering at different times may lead to reduced (or no) intra-cell interference at a receiving device. That is, to avoid intra-cell interference at a receiving device, an ambient IoT device may backscatter to the receiving device at a different time than the one or more other ambient IoT devices may backscatter to the same receiving device. As an illustrative example, the ambient IoT device 310-a may send the backscatter 320-a to the network device 305 (for measurement at the network device 305) at a different time than the ambient IoT device 310-b may send backscatter 320-c to the network device 305 via a backscatter link 326-c (for measurement at the network device 305) . For example, the network device 305 may transmit the measurement scheduling indication 330-b to the  ambient IoT device 310-a and may transmit a second measurement scheduling indication to the ambient IoT device 310-b via the assisting node 306 or another assisting node. The measurement scheduling indication 330-b may schedule the first resource for the measurement of the backscatter 320-a from the ambient IoT device 310-a and the second measurement scheduling indication may schedule a third resource for measurement of the backscatter 320-c from the ambient IoT device 310-b. In such an example, the first resource (over which the backscatter 320-a may be sent from the ambient IoT device 310-a) and the third resource (over which the backscatter 320-c may be sent from the ambient IoT device 310-b) may correspond to different time domain resources. Additionally, in such an example, the backscatter 320-a and the backscatter 320-c may be associated with multiple (e.g., different) waveforms. For example, the backscatter 320-a may be associated with the waveform 315-b (e.g., a first continuous wave signal) and the backscatter 320-c may be associated with a second waveform (e.g., a second continuous wave signal) . The first continuous wave signal and the second continuous wave signal may have the same center frequency and the same transmit power. For example, the assisting node 306 may transmit the waveform 315-b (e.g., a continuous wave) to the ambient IoT device 310-a with the same transmit power and at the same center frequency as the assisting node 306 (or another assisting node) may transmit the second waveform to the ambient IoT device 310-b.

[0156] In some other examples, the ambient IoT device 310-a may backscatter at the same time as the one or more other ambient IoT devices (e.g., the ambient IoT device 310-b) . For example, the ambient IoT device 310-a may backscatter to a receiving device at the same time as the one or more other ambient IoT devices may backscatter to the same receiving device. Different ambient IoT devices (e.g., the different ambient IoT devices that may backscatter to the same receiving device at the same time) may backscatter at multiple (e.g., different) frequencies such that harmonics impacts may be neglected (e.g., at the receiving device) . For example, more than one ambient IoT device may backscatter at the same time with a suitable frequency separation (e.g., a frequency separation in which the impact of harmonics may be neglected) . In some examples, such as examples in which multiple ambient IoT devices (e.g., more than one ambient IoT device) may backscatter at the same time, the network device 305 may schedule the multiple (e.g., different) ambient IoT devices to  backscatter with multiple (e.g., different) frequency shifts. For example, the network device 305 may transmit the measurement scheduling indication 330-b to the ambient IoT device 310-a via the assisting node 306 and may transmit a second measurement scheduling indication to the ambient IoT device 310-b via the assisting node 306 or another assisting node. The measurement scheduling indication 330-b may schedule the first resource for measurement of the backscatter 320-a from the ambient IoT device 310-a and the second measurement scheduling indication may schedule the first resource for measurement of the backscatter 320-c from the ambient IoT device 310-b. In such an example, a frequency shift for the backscattered data signal 340-a (or backscattered data signal 340-c) may be based on the measurement of the backscatter 320-a or the second backscatter, or both.

[0157] In some examples, the network device 305 may schedule multiple (e.g., different) ambient IoT devices to backscatter with multiple (e.g., different) frequency shifts. For example, the network device 305 may indicate to the ambient IoT devices 310 (or the ambient IoT devices 310 may select) different frequency shifts for backscattering over the first resource. That is, the network device 305 may indicate to the ambient IoT device 310-a (e.g., via the measurement scheduling indication 330-b) to send the backscatter 320-a over the first resource in accordance with a first frequency shift and may indicate to the ambient IoT device 310-b (e.g., via the second measurement scheduling indication) to send the backscatter 320-c over the first resource in accordance with a second frequency shift different from the first frequency shift. Accordingly, the backscatter 320-a from the ambient IoT device 310-a and the backscatter 320-c from the ambient IoT device 310-b may be associated with different frequency shifts.

[0158] In some other examples, the network device 305 may schedule multiple (e.g., different) assisting nodes to transmit continuous wave signals at multiple (e.g., different) frequencies, while ambient IoT device served by the multiple assisting nodes may backscatter the continuous wave signals with a same frequency shift. For example, the assisting node 306 may serve one ambient IoT device at a given time. In the example of FIG. 3, the assisting node 306 may serve the ambient IoT device 310-a and a second assisting node may serve the ambient IoT device 310-b. In other words, the assisting node 306 may be associated with (e.g., server) the ambient IoT device 310-a and the second assisting node may be associated with (e.g., serve) the ambient IoT device 310-b. In such an example, the network device 305 may schedule the assisting node 306 and the second assisting node to transmit respective continuous wave signals at different frequencies. Additionally, the network may schedule (e.g., configure, indicate) the ambient IoT devices 310 to backscatter the respective continuous wave signals with a same frequency shift. In some examples, the frequency shift may correspond to a fixed value. For example, the assisting node 306 may transmit the waveform 315-b (e.g., a first continuous wave signal) to the ambient IoT device 310-awith a first frequency and the second assisting node may transmit a second waveform (e.g., a second continuous wave signal) to the ambient IoT device 310-b with a second frequency that is different from the first frequency.

[0159] The ambient IoT device 310-a and the ambient IoT device 310-b may use the same frequency shift to backscatter the waveform 315-b and the second waveform, respectively. For example, the ambient IoT device 310-a may use a first frequency shift to generate (e.g., send) the backscatter 320-a and the ambient IoT device 310-b may use the first frequency shift to generate (e.g., send) the backscatter 320-c. The waveform 315-a and the second waveform have (e.g., are transmitted with) different frequencies, therefore, the backscatter 320-a generated by the ambient IoT device 310-a using the first frequency shift may have a different frequency than the backscatter 320-c generated by the ambient IoT device 310-b using the same frequency shift. In other words, the backscatter 320-a may be associated with a first continuous wave signal and the backscatter320-c may be associated with a second continuous wave signal that has a different center frequency than the first continuous wave signal.

[0160] In some examples, the network may trigger a second-round backscatter link measurement. That is, the network device 305 may trigger (e.g., schedule, configure, indicate) one or more additional resources for one or more additional measurements of the backscatter link 326-a. For example, the network device 305 may transmit third control signaling (e.g., including a second measurement scheduling indication) to the ambient IoT device 310-a via the assisting node 306, the second measurement scheduling indication may schedule a third resource for measurement of second backscatter from the ambient IoT device 310-a. In such an example, the frequency shift  (e.g., for the backscattered data signal 340-a) may be based on the measurement of the backscatter 320-a, the measurement of the second backscatter, or both.

[0161] The network device 305 may trigger the second-round backscatter link measurement based on one or more conditions. In some examples, a condition to trigger a second-round backscatter link measurement (or another subsequent round backscatter link measurement) may include a value of a previous measurement (e.g., a first-round backscatter measurement) failing to satisfy a first threshold. For example, the network device 305 may measure a respective received power of backscatter sent from one or more ambient IoT devices via one or more backscatter links at the same time and a received power measurement value (e.g., a minimum or average received power measurement value) of the one or more received power measurements of the backscatter from the one or more ambient IoT devices (e.g., all ambient IoT devices which may backscatter at the same time) may fail to satisfy (e.g., may be less than) a first threshold. That is, the network device 305 may trigger a second-round backscatter link measurement in response to a received power measurement value (e.g., a minimum or average received power measurement value) associated with one or more ambient IoT devices which may backscatter at the same time failing to satisfy the first threshold (e.g., a received power threshold) . In other words, multiple ambient IoT devices may be scheduled to backscatter over the first resource, and transmission of the third control signaling (e.g., scheduling the third resource for measurement of the second backscatter from the ambient IoT device 310-a) may be based on a minimum or average received power value associated with the multiple ambient IoT devices failing to satisfy the first threshold. The first threshold may include a configured or preconfigured threshold. A configured threshold may refer to a threshold indicated to (e.g., via RRC signaling, a MAC-CE or DCI) or determined by a device. A preconfigured threshold may refer to a threshold predefined (e.g., hard coded) at the device.

[0162] Additionally, or alternatively, a condition to trigger a second-round backscatter link measurement may include a percentage of the multiple ambient IoT devices which backscatter at the same time being associated with a received power measurement value that fails to satisfy (e.g., is less than) the first threshold satisfying (e.g., being greater than) a second threshold. In other words, a portion of the multiple ambient IoT devices scheduled to backscatter over the first resource may be associated  with a received power value that fails to satisfy the first threshold and the quantity of ambient IoT devices included in the portion may satisfy the second threshold. That is, each ambient IoT device of the portion may be associated with a respective received power value that fails to satisfy the first threshold, and transmission of the third control signaling (scheduling the third resource for measurement of the second backscatter from the ambient IoT device 310-a) may be based on the quantity of ambient IoT device included in the portion satisfying the second threshold (e.g., a quantity threshold) . The second threshold may include a configured or preconfigured threshold.

[0163] Multiple (e.g., different) rounds of backscatter link measurements may be associated with multiple (e.g., different) transmit powers. For example, for the measurement of the backscatter 320-a (e.g., for a first-round backscatter link measurement) from the ambient IoT device 310-a, the assisting node 306 may transmit a continuous wave signal (e.g., the waveform 315-b) with a first transmit power value. Additionally, for the measurement of the second backscatter from the ambient IoT device 310-a (e.g., for a second-round backscatter link measurement) from the ambient IoT device 310-a, the assisting node 306 may transmit the continuous wave signal (e.g., another waveform) with a second transmit power value that is different from the first transmit power value. In some examples, the second transmit power value may be different from (e.g., less than, greater than) the first transmit power value. For example, an SINR experienced at one ambient IoT served by the assisting node 306 may be relatively high, but due to a relatively high transmit power of the continuous wave signal transmitted by the assisting node 306, the assisting node 306 may introduce increased interference to one or more other ambient IoT device. Accordingly, the transmit power of the assisting node 306 may be decreased. In some other examples, the SINR experienced at an ambient IoT devices served by the assisting node 306 may be relatively low. Accordingly, the assisting node 306 may increase the transmit power of the continuous wave signal.

[0164] In some examples, the assisting node 306 may increase or decrease the second transmit power value by a fixed (e.g., static) value. That is, a difference between the first transmit power value and the second transmit power value may correspond to a fixed value. In some other examples, the assisting node 306 may increase or decrease the transmitted power of the continuous wave signal by a value determined by the  network device 305 or the assisting node 306. For example, the assisting node 306 may increase or decrease the transmitted power of the continuous wave signal for the second-round backscatter link measurement by a value that is based on a received power measurement of the first-round backscatter link measurement or a level of interference experienced by other ambient IoT devices due to the transmitted power of the assisting node 306. That is, the difference between the first transmit power value and the second transmit power value may be based on a value of a received power associated with the backscatter 320-a.

[0165] In some examples, the assisting node 306 (or the network device 305) may determine a quantity by which to increase or decrease the transmit power for the second-round backscatter link measurement based on received power measurements of backscatter sent from one or more ambient IoT devices via one or more backscatter links. For example, the assisting node 306 (or the network device 305) may map the increase or decrease in the transmit power based on a received power measurement value (e.g., a minimum or average received power measurement value) among multiple received power measurement values associated with multiple ambient IoT devices failing to satisfy the first threshold (e.g., a received power threshold) .

[0166] Additionally, or alternatively, the assisting node 306 (or the network device 305) may map the increase or decrease in the transmit power based on a portion of the multiple ambient IoT devices with a received power value that fails to satisfy the first threshold satisfying the second threshold. For example, the network device 305 may configure (e.g., RRC configure) the assisting node 306 or the assisting node 306 may be otherwise configured (e.g., may be preconfigured) with a table of transmit power values (or a table of quantities by which to increase or decrease a transmit power value) and the assisting node 306 may select a transmit power value (or a quantity by which to increase or decrease a previous transmit power value) based on a received power measurement value among multiple received power measurement values associated with multiple ambient IoT devices failing to satisfy the first threshold or based on a portion of the multiple ambient IoT devices with a received power value that fails to satisfy the first threshold satisfying the second threshold. In some other examples, the network device 305 may indicate (e.g., may transmit an indication of) , to the assisting node 306, a power level to be used or the continuous wave signal transmission. That is, the network  device 305 may transmit an indication of a power level associated with the second backscatter to the assisting node 306. In such an example, the second transmit power value may be based on the indicated power level. In some examples, the network (e.g., the network device 305, the assisting node 306) may repeat backscatter link measurements (e.g., may continue to perform subsequent rounds of backscatter link measurements) until a condition is satisfied. For example, the network may repeat backscatter link measurements until a received power associated with multiple (e.g., all) backscatter links satisfies the first threshold or until the portion of the multiple ambient IoT devices with a received power value that fails to satisfy the first threshold fails to satisfy the second threshold. That is, the network device 305 may transmit the second control signaling (e.g., including the measurement scheduling indication 330-b that schedules transmission of the backscattered data signal 340-a) based on a received power associated with the second backscatter (or one or more other received powers associated with other backscatter) satisfying one or more thresholds.

[0167] As illustrated in the example of FIG. 3, the network may schedule a frequency shift for data backscattering from the ambient IoT devices 310 (e.g., the backscattered data signals 340) based on the measurement of the backscatter 320-a or the backscatter 320-c, or both. In other words, the network may schedule the data backscattering based on one or more uplink measurements (e.g., measurement of backscatter sent in the uplink direction, such as via the backscatter link 326-a) . In some examples, the network may schedule multiple (e.g., at least two) ambient IoT devices, such as ambient IoT devices that have suitable power separation, to backscatter using the same frequency shift. Additionally, or alternatively, the network may schedule the respective assisting node (s) of the multiple ambient IoT devices to transmit a continuous wave (e.g., for data backscattering) with multiple (e.g., different) power levels such that that the multiple ambient IoT devices may have a suitable power separation backscattering with the same frequency shift.

[0168] For example, the network device 305 may indicate, to the assisting node 306, a transmit power for a waveform (e.g., continuous wave signal) to be used to generate the backscattered data signal 340-a. For example, the network device 305 may schedule data backscattering for one or more ambient IoT devices based on one or more uplink measurements and may indicate (e.g., per assisting node) a respective transmit power of  a continuous wave signal associated with the data backscattering. For example, the network may transmit the data scheduling indication 335-b to the assisting node 306 and the assisting node may forward the data scheduling indication 335-b to the ambient IoT device 310-a via the downlink 325-b. The data scheduling indication 335-b (or some other indication) may indicate a transmit power for a waveform that is to be transmitted by the ambient IoT device 310 and that is to be used by the ambient IoT device 310-afor generating the backscattered data signal 340-a. That is, the network may transmit data backscattering scheduling to one or more assisting nodes and an assisting node (e.g., each of the one or more assisting nodes) may forward the scheduling to one or more (respective) ambient IoT devices.

[0169] In some examples, the network device 305 may schedule multiple (e.g., different) ambient IoT devices to backscatter with multiple (e.g., different) frequency shifts. For example, the network device 305 may indicate to the ambient IoT device 310-a (e.g., via the data scheduling indication 335-b) to send the backscattered data signal 340-a over the second resource in accordance with a first frequency shift and may indicate to the ambient IoT device 310-b (e.g., via the second data scheduling indication) to send the backscattered data signal 340-c over the first resource in accordance with a second frequency shift different from the first frequency shift. Accordingly, the backscattered data signal 340-a from the ambient IoT device 310-a and the backscattered data signal 340-c from the ambient IoT device 310-b may be associated with different frequency shifts.

[0170] In some other examples, the network device 305 may schedule multiple (e.g., different) assisting nodes to transmit continuous wave signals at multiple (e.g., different) frequencies, while the multiple ambient IoT devices backscatter the backscattered data signals 340 with the same (e.g., fixed) frequency shift. That is, the assisting node 306 may transmit a first continuous wave signal to the ambient IoT device 310-a with a first frequency and the second assisting node may transmit a second continuous wave signal to the ambient IoT device 310-b with a second frequency that is different from the first frequency. As such, the ambient IoT device 310-a and the ambient IoT device 310-b may use the same frequency shift to generate the backscattered data signal 340-a and the backscattered data signal 340-c, respectively. In other words, the assisting node 306 may serve a single ambient IoT device.  Accordingly, the assisting node 306 may serve the ambient IoT device 310-a and a second assisting node may serve the ambient IoT device 310-b. In such an example, the network device 305 may configure the ambient IoT devices 310 to use the same frequency shift and may configure the assisting nodes (e.g., the assisting node 306 and the second assisting node) to use different center frequencies for the ambient IoT devices 310. Alternatively, the assisting node 306 may serve multiple ambient IoT devices. Accordingly, the assisting node 306 may serve the ambient IoT device 310-aand the ambient IoT device 310-b. In such an example, the network device may configure the ambient IoT devices 310 to use different frequency shifts and may configure the assisting node 306 to use a single center frequency (e.g., the same center frequency) for both of the ambient IoT devices 310.

[0171] In some other examples, the network device 205 may use the assisting node 306 to assist uplink communication (e.g., with the ambient IoT device 310-a) . For example, the network device 305 may determine a frequency shift for backscatter from the ambient IoT device 310-a based on one or more received power measurements at the ambient IoT device 310-a of a downlink 325-a (e.g., of downlink signaling 345-a transmitted via the downlink 325-a) . Additionally, or alternatively, the network device 305 may determine a frequency shift for backscatter from the ambient IoT device 310-a based on one or more received power measurements of a backscatter link 326-b between the ambient IoT device 310-a and the assisting node 306 (e.g., of backscatter 320-b sent via the backscatter link 326-b) . The network device 305 may transmit first control signaling that includes a measurement scheduling indication to the ambient IoT device 310-a (e.g., directly via the downlink 325-a) . For example, the network device 305 may transmit a measurement scheduling indication 330-a to the ambient IoT device 310-a via the downlink 325-a. The measurement scheduling indication 330-a may indicate, to the ambient IoT device 310-a, to transmit the backscatter 320-b via the backscatter link 326-b over the first resource. Additionally, the network device 305 may transmit the measurement scheduling indication 330-b to the assisting node 306 via the communication link 327.  The measurement scheduling indication 330-b may indicate, to the assisting node 306, to measure the backscatter 320-b over the first resource. In other words, the network may schedule the first resource for the ambient IoT device 310-a to second the backscatter 320-b (e.g., a backscatter signal) for measurement and may also schedule the assisting node 306 to perform the corresponding measurement (e.g., over the first resource) . The network device 305 may transmit a waveform 315-a to the ambient IoT device 310-a, which the ambient IoT device 310-a may use to generate (e.g., send) the backscatter 320-b (e.g., for the measurement at the assisting node 306) . The first resource may include a periodic, semi-persistent, or aperiodic resource. That is, the network may configure one or more periodic, semi-persistent, or aperiodic resources for the measurement (e.g., of the backscatter link 326-b or the downlink 325-a) .

[0172] The network device 305 may determine the frequency shift based on the measurement of the backscatter 320-b and whether the assisting node 306 supports SIC. For example, the assisting node 306 may indicate, to the network device 305, whether the assisting node 306 has an SIC receiver or not, and the network device 305 may schedule the frequency shift for the ambient IoT device 310-a accordingly. As illustrated in the example of FIG. 3, the assisting node 306 may transmit an SIC capability indication 350 to the network device 305. The SIC capability indication 350 may include information indicative of whether the assisting node 306 supports SIC.

[0173] In some examples, for the backscatter link measurement, the ambient IoT device 310-a (e.g., a target ambient IoT device) may backscatter signal for the measurement. That is, the ambient IoT device 310-a may send the backscatter 320-b to the assisting node 306 for one or more received power measurements. In some examples, one target ambient IoT device may backscatter a signal for measurement. That is, in some examples, the network may schedule a single ambient IoT device to backscatter a signal at a given time for the measurement. In some other examples, more than one ambient IoT device may backscatter signal for the measurement. That is, in some other examples, the network may schedule multiple ambient IoT devices to backscatter respective signal (s) at a given time for the measurement. In such examples, the multiple ambient IoT devices may backscatter the respective signals (e.g., at the same time) with a suitable frequency shift. The suitable frequency shift may include a frequency shift in which harmonics impacts of the concurrent backscattered signals  (e.g., from the multiple ambient IoT devices) may be neglected. The multiple ambient IoT devices may be served by the same assisting node or different assisting nodes.

[0174] In some examples, such as examples in which multiple ambient IoT devices may be served by multiple assisting nodes, an assisting node may measure backscatter from a served ambient IoT device and one or more other ambient IoT devices served by another assisting node. In other words, one or more ambient IoT devices served by other assisting nodes (e.g., assisting nodes not serve the target ambient IoT device) may backscatter signal for the measurement. For example, the ambient IoT device 310-a may be an example of a target ambient IoT device. The assisting node 306 may serve the ambient IoT device 310-a and another assisting node may serve the ambient IoT device 310-b. In such an example, the network device 305 may schedule the first resource for the ambient IoT device 310-a (e.g., the target ambient IoT device) to send the backscatter 320-b to the assisting node 306 via the backscatter link 326-b and may schedule the first resource for the ambient IoT device 310-b (e.g., another ambient IoT device served by another assisting node) to send backscatter 320-d to the assisting node 306 via a backscatter link 326-d. The assisting node 306 may measure the backscatter 320-b and the backscatter 320-d. In such an example, the assisting node 306 may determine a level of interference associated with backscatter from the ambient IoT device 310-b. The frequency shift for data backscattering by the ambient IoT device 310-a may be based on the measurement of the backscatter 320-b and the backscatter 320-d (e.g., the measurement of the level of interference associated with the backscatter 320-d) .

[0175] In some examples, the assisting node 306 may measure backscatter from multiple (e.g., all) ambient IoT devices served by other assisting nodes. In such examples, the network device 305 may determine a quantity of ambient IoT devices that may send concurrent transmissions to an assisting node (e.g., may determine a supported maximum concurrent transmission quantity of ambient IoT devices per assisting node) . For example, the network device 305 may determine (e.g., the assisting node 306 may indicate to the network device 305 or the network device 305 may otherwise determine) a quantity of ambient IoT devices from which the assisting node 306 may support concurrent transmissions. In such an example, the assisting node 306 may group the ambient IoT devices based on a respective location of the ambient IoT  devices, or a respective cell associated with the ambient IoT devices, or both. For example, the wireless communications system 300 may support multiple groups of ambient IoT devices associated with multiple (e.g., different) locations or cells, or both. Each group may select one or more ambient IoT devices to perform backscattering (e.g., for measurement at the assisting node 306) . In some examples, such as example in which each group may select a single ambient IoT device to perform the backscattering, the quantity of groups may equal the concurrent transmission quantity of ambient IoT devices (e.g., the maximum concurrent transmission quantity of ambient IoT devices) . The frequency shift for data backscattering from the ambient IoT device 310-a may be based on the measurement of the backscattering from the target ambient IoT device and the respective backscattering from the selected ambient IoT devices from each group.

[0176] The assisting node 306 may transmit information indicative of the measurement of the backscatter 320-a (e.g., and the backscatter 320-b) to the network device 305. For example, the assisting node 306 may perform the backscatter link measurement (e.g., the measurement of the backscatter 320-b sent via the backscatter link 326-b or measurement of the backscatter 320-d sent via the backscatter link 326-d, or both) based on the scheduling and may transmits information related to the backscatter link measurement (s) to the network. Accordingly, the frequency shift for data backscattering from the ambient IoT device 310-a may be based on the information. As illustrated in the example of FIG. 3, the network device 305 may receive a backscatter link measurement indication 355 from the assisting node 306 via the communication link 327. The backscatter link measurement indication may include information indicative of the measurement of at least the backscatter 320-a. The frequency shift for data backscattering by the ambient IoT device 310-a (e.g., a frequency shift for backscattered data signal 340-a) may be based on the information.

[0177] The information may be indicative of a proposed (e.g., suggested) frequency shift per ambient IoT device. For example, the assisting node 306 may indicate a proposed frequency shift for the ambient IoT device 310-a and one or more other frequency shifts for one or more other ambient IoT devices (e.g., the ambient IoT device 310-b) , which may be served by the assisting node 306 or served by another assisting node. Additionally, or alternatively, the information may be indicative of a received power measurement (e.g., a SINR measurement, an RSRP measurement, an RSSI  measurement) per ambient IoT device. For example, the assisting node 306 may indicate a received power measurement for the ambient IoT device 310-a and one or more other received power measurements for one or more other ambient IoT devices (e.g., the ambient IoT device 310-b) , which may be served by the assisting node 306 or served by another assisting node.

[0178] In some examples, the information may be indicative of a received power measurement (e.g., a minimum or other otherwise suitable received power measurement) among multiple received power measurements associated with multiple (e.g., all) ambient IoT devices served by the assisting node 306. For example, multiple ambient IoT devices served by the same assisting node may share a same set of one or more candidate frequency shifts (e.g., a same frequency shift set) . Accordingly, the frequency shift for the data backscattering from the ambient IoT device may be selected from among the set of candidate frequency shifts based on the received power measurement (e.g., a minimum received power value among multiple received power values measured for the multiple ambient IoT devices served by the assisting node 306) . The network device 305 may schedule the second resource for ambient IoT device 310-a to perform data backscattering based on the received information from the assisting node 306. For example, the network device 305 may transmit a data scheduling indication 335-a to the ambient IoT device 310-a via the downlink 325-a. The data scheduling indication 335-a may schedule the second resource for the ambient IoT device to send the backscattered data signal 340-b to the assisting node 306 via the backscatter link 326-b in accordance with the determined frequency shift. The network device 305 may also transmit the data scheduling indication 335-b via the communication link 327. The data scheduling indication 335-b may schedule the second resource for reception of the backscattered data signal 340-b. In some examples, the data scheduling indication 335-b may schedule one or more other resources for the assisting node 306 to transmit (e.g., relay, send, forward) the backscattered data signal 340-b to the network device 305 (or to transmit information indicative of the backscattered data signal 340-b to the network device 305) .

[0179] A frequency shift for backscattering by an ambient IoT device may be determined per ambient IoT device or per group of ambient IoT devices. In some examples, the frequency shift may be based on a coverage area associated with the  ambient IoT device. For example, the frequency shift may be determined per a group of ambient IoT device and multiple ambient IoT devices within a group (e.g., all the ambient IoT devices within the same cell) may share the same set frequency shift candidates. An assisting node associated with the group (e.g., the assisting node 306) may indicate a coverage area (e.g., a maximum or otherwise supported coverage for the group) to the network device 305. The network device 305 may determine a frequency shift for backscattering by an ambient IoT device (e.g., the ambient IoT device 310-a) or may determine the set of candidate frequency shifts for the group based on the indicated coverage area (e.g., the maximum supported coverage area of the assisting node 306) .

[0180] Additionally, or alternatively, the frequency shift for the ambient IoT device may be based on a predicted received power value associated with the ambient IoT device (e.g., a minimum predicted received power value among multiple predicted received power values associated with the multiple ambient IoT devices including in the group) . For example, the assisting node 306 may indicate a predicted received power measurement for a group of ambient IoT devices that includes the ambient IoT device 310-a (e.g., a predicted minimum or otherwise suitable received power measurement for the group of ambient IoT devices) to the network device 305. In such an example, the frequency shift for the ambient IoT device 310-a may be based on the predicted received power measurement for the group.

[0181] In some examples, multiple ambient IoT device within the same cell may share the same set of candidate frequency shifts. In such examples, the network device 305 may select a frequency shift (e.g., for a target ambient IoT device of the group, such as the ambient IoT device 310-a) from the set of candidate frequency shifts based on a predicted received power measurement (e.g., a predicted minimum or otherwise suitable received power measurement) for the multiple ambient IoT devices with the same cell. In some examples, the network device 305 may select the frequency shift based on a minimum or otherwise suitable predicted received power measurement among multiple (e.g., all) connected assisting nodes (e.g., multiple assisting nodes that may be connected to the network device 305) . For example, the network device 305 may receive multiple predicted received power measurements from multiple assisting nodes and may determine one or more frequency shifts (e.g., the frequency shift for the ambient IoT device 310-a) based on a predicted received power measurement (e.g., a  minimum or otherwise suitable predicted received power measurement) among the multiple predicted received power measurements. Additionally, or alternatively, multiple (e.g., all) ambient IoT devices served by the same assisting node may share the same set of candidate frequency shifts. In such an example, the network device 305 may selected the frequency shift for the ambient IoT device 310 from among the set of candidate frequency shifts associated with the assisting node 306. The signaling shown to be communicated between the network device 305, the assisting node 306, and the ambient IoT devices 310 may be communicated in a different order than the order shown in FIG. 3.

[0182] FIG. 4 shows an example of a frequency shift diagram 400 that supports frequency shift determination for ambient devices based on a receiver SIC capability in accordance with one or more aspects of the present disclosure. In some examples, the frequency shift diagram 400 may support aspects of the wireless communications system 100, the wireless communications system 200, and the wireless communications system 300. For example, the frequency shift diagram 400 may be provide examples of a frequency shift (e.g., a suitable frequency separation) , as described with reference to FIGs. 1–3.

[0183] As illustrated in FIG. 4, a network device may support multiple frequency shifts for backscatter communications with one or more ambient IoT devices. In some examples, a frequency shift may be relative to a waveform frequency 410. The waveform frequency 410 may correspond to a frequency of a waveform (e.g., an activation waveform, an incident waveform, a continuous wave signal) illustrated by and described with reference to FIGs. 2 and 3. In some examples, each frequency shift may correspond to a center frequency of a respective bandwidth 405. For example, Δf may correspond to a center frequency of a bandwidth 405-a, 2Δf may correspond to a center frequency of a bandwidth 405-b, 3Δf may correspond to a center frequency of a bandwidth 405-c, 4Δf may correspond to a center frequency of a bandwidth 405-d, 5Δf may correspond to a center frequency of a bandwidth 405-e, and 6Δf may correspond to a center frequency of a bandwidth 405-f. In some cases, each of the bandwidths 405 may be associated with a set of one or more frequency channels (e.g., equally spaced frequency channels) that may be adjacent to the frequency channel associated with the waveform frequency 410. Additionally, while FIG. 4 illustrates an example in which the  network device may support a frequency shift set {Δf, 2Δf, 3Δf, 4Δf, 5Δf, 6Δf} , it is to be understood that the network device may support any quantity of frequency shifts for backscattering. Additionally, the network device may support a set of frequency shifts that equally spaced or unequally spaced relative to the waveform frequency 410.

[0184] An ambient IoT device may perform backscatter communications in accordance with one or more square waves. A square wave may be associated with (e.g., lead to the generation of) one or multiple harmonics. In some examples, a harmonic (e.g., each harmonic) of a square wave may be associated with a power reduction relative to a transmission power of a reference frequency (e.g., the frequency of the square wave) . The power reduction of a given harmonic may be inversely proportional to a degree of a given harmonic. For example, an n-th degree harmonic may have power reduction proportional to As an illustrative example, harmonics of a square wave may be associated with power reductions in accordance with the following Table 2:

[0185] It is to be understood that the respective power reduction associated with each harmonic of Table 2 may change based on implementation of one or more devices (e.g., the ambient IoT devices, the network device, an assisting node) , and the examples described herein should not be considered limiting to the scope covered by the claims or the disclosure.

[0186] In some examples, a suitable power difference (e.g., power separation) between two signals at a receiver may refer to a power difference that satisfies a first threshold (e.g., a power difference that is greater than 12dB) . Accordingly, a suitable frequency separation, as described herein, may refer to a frequency separation that provides (e.g., corresponds to, leads to) a suitable power separation. The power difference between a first received power value of a first backscatter signal from a first ambient IoT device and a second received power value of a second backscattered signal from a second ambient IoT device may satisfy the first threshold (e.g., may be greater than 12 dB) . In such an example, a resource scheduler (e.g., the network device) may schedule the first ambient IoT device and the second ambient IoT device to backscatter with the same frequency shift (e.g., one of {Δf, 2Δf, 3Δf, 4Δf, 5Δf, 6Δf} ) . In some other examples, the first ambient IoT device and the second ambient IoT device may be associated with backscatter having the same (or a relatively similar) received power value. That is, a backscattered power associated with the first ambient IoT device may be the same as a backscattered power associated with the second ambient IoT device. In such examples, the resource scheduler may schedule the first ambient IoT device to backscatter at Δf, and may schedule the second ambient IoT device to backscatter at 5Δf. For example, Δf may correspond to a reference frequency and 5Δf may correspond to the 5th harmonic of the reference frequency. As such, a power difference between the first backscattered signal of the first ambient IoT device and the second backscattered signal of the second ambient IoT device may satisfy the first threshold (e.g., may be about 14 dB, which is greater than 12 dB) . Accordingly, a receiver of the first backscattered signal and the second backscattered signal (e.g., the resource scheduler, the network device) may concurrently decode respective messages included in the first backscattered signal and the second backscattered signal.

[0187] In some other examples in which the first ambient IoT device and the second ambient IoT device are associated with backscatter having the same (or a relatively similar) received power value, the resource scheduler may schedule the first ambient IoT device to backscatter at Δf, and may schedule the second ambient IoT device to backscatter at 3Δf. In such examples, Δf may correspond to a reference frequency and 3Δf may correspond to the 3rd harmonic of the reference frequency. As such, a power difference between the first backscattered signal of the first ambient IoT device and the  second backscattered signal of the second ambient IoT device may fail to satisfy the first threshold (e.g., may be about 9.5 dB, which is less than 12 dB) . Accordingly, a receiver of the first backscattered signal and the second backscattered signal (e.g., the resource scheduler, the network device) may decode the message of the first backscattered signal received from the first ambient IoT device first and then may decode the massage of the second backscattered signal received from the second ambient IoT device.

[0188] In some examples, a suitable power difference (e.g., power separation) between two signals at a receiver may refer to a power difference that satisfies a second threshold, which may be greater than the first threshold (e.g., may be greater than 12 dB) . That is, in some examples, the receiver may efficiently decode two signals in which a power difference between the two signals at the receiver may be greater than 12 dB.In some examples, such as examples in which the power difference between the first ambient-IoT device and the second ambient IoT device satisfies the second threshold (e.g., is greater than 12 dB) , the network device may schedule the first ambient IoT device and the second ambient IoT device to backscatter with the same frequency shift (e.g., one of {Δf, 2Δf, 3Δf, 4Δf, 5Δf, 6Δf} ) .

[0189] In some other examples, the power difference between the first ambient-IoT device and the second ambient IoT device may fail to satisfy a threshold (e.g., the first threshold or the second threshold) . In such examples, the network device may schedule the first ambient IoT device and the second ambient IoT device to backscatter with different frequency shifts such that the power difference between the first ambient-IoT device and the second ambient IoT device may satisfy the threshold. Additionally, or alternatively, the network device may set (e.g., indicate, modify, adjust, change) a transmit power of a respective continuous wave signal used to generate backscatter from the first ambient IoT device and the second ambient IoT device such that the power difference between the first ambient IoT device and the second ambient IoT device may satisfy the threshold.

[0190] For example, the received power of backscatter from the first ambient IoT device and the second ambient IoT device may be the same. In such an example, the network device may schedule the first ambient IoT device and the second ambient IoT device to backscatter with same frequency shift. Additionally, the network device may  schedule an assisting node which serves the first ambient IoT device to transmit a first continuous wave signal for first backscatter from the first ambient IoT device with a first transmit power (Pt) and may schedule an assisting node which serves the second ambient IoT device (e.g., the same assisting node or a different assisting node) to transmit a second continuous wave signal for second backscatter from the second ambient IoT device with a second transmit power (Pt±12 dB) , such that a different between the first transmit power and the second transmit power (and thus the power difference between the first backscatter and the second backscatter) satisfies the threshold.

[0191] Alternatively, the network device may schedule the first ambient IoT device to backscatter in accordance with a first frequency shift (e.g., at Δf) and may schedule the second ambient IoT device to backscatter in accordance with a second frequency shift (e.g., at 3Δf) , such that a difference between a received power of the first backscatter from the first ambient IoT device (in accordance with the first frequency shift) and the second backscatter from the second ambient IoT device (in accordance with the second frequency shift) corresponds to a first quantity of dB, which may be less than the threshold. Accordingly, the network device may also schedule the assisting node which serves the first ambient IoT device to transmit the first continuous wave signal with a first transmit power (Pt) and may schedule the assisting node which serves the second ambient IoT device to transmit the second continuous wave signal with a second transmit power (Pt+3 dB) , such that a difference between the first transmit power and the second transmit power corresponds to a second quantity of dBs and the summation of the first quantity and the second quantity satisfies the threshold.

[0192] In some examples, the power difference between the first ambient IoT device and the second ambient IoT device may correspond to a first quantity of dBs, which may fail to satisfy the threshold. For example, the received power of the first backscatter from the first ambient IoT device may be about 6 dB (or some other quantity of dB) higher than the received power of the second backscatter form the second ambient IoT device. In such an example, the network device may configure the assisting node which serves the first ambient IoT device to transmit the first continuous wave signal with a first transmit power (Pt) and may configure (e.g., schedule) the assisting node which serves the second ambient IoT device to transmit the second continuous wave signal  with a second transmit power (Pt-6 dB) , such that a difference between the first transmit power and the second transmit power corresponds to a second quantity of dBs and the summation of the first quantity and the second quantity satisfies the threshold. Alternatively, the network may configure the assisting node which serves the first ambient-IoT device to transmit with a third transmit power (Pt+6 dB) and may configure (e.g., schedule) the assisting node which serves the second ambient IoT device to transmit the second continuous wave signal with the first transmit power (Pt) , such that a difference between the first transmit power and the third transmit power corresponds to the second quantity of dBs and the summation of the first quantity and the second quantity satisfies the threshold.

[0193] FIG. 5 shows an example of a process flow 500 that supports frequency shift determination for ambient devices based on a receiver SIC capability in accordance with one or more aspects of the present disclosure. The process flow 500 may implement or may be implemented by aspects of the wireless communications system 100, the wireless communications system 200, the wireless communications system 300, and the frequency shift diagram 400. For example, the process flow 500 illustrates operations at a network device 505, which may be an example of a network device illustrated by and described with reference to FIGs. 1–4. Additionally, the process flow 500 illustrates operations at an ambient IoT device 510, which may be an example of an ambient IoT device illustrated by and described with reference to FIGs. 1–4. The operations performed at the network device 505 and the ambient IoT device 510 may support improvements to communications between the network device 505 and the ambient IoT device 510, among other benefits. In the following description of the process flow 500, the operations performed at the network device 505 and the ambient IoT device 510 may occur in a different order than the example order shown. Additionally, the operations performed at the network device 505 and the ambient IoT device 510 may be performed at different times. Some operations may be combined, and some operations may be omitted. In some examples, the network device 505 and the ambient IoT device 510 may support a framework for determining a frequency shift for backscatter communications by an ambient IoT device based on whether a receiver of the backscatter communications supports SIC.

[0194] At 515, the network device 505 may transmit first control signaling to the ambient IoT device 510. The first control signaling may include a measurement scheduling indication, which may be an example of a measurement scheduling indication illustrated by and described with reference to FIG. 2. For example, the measurement scheduling indication may schedule a first resource for measurement of a communication link (e.g., a downlink or a backscatter link) associated with the ambient IoT device 510.

[0195] In some examples, at 520, the network device 505 may receive backscatter from the ambient IoT device 510 via the backscatter link. For example, the communication link may include the backscatter link and, as such, the measurement scheduling indication may schedule the first resource for transmission of the backscatter from the ambient IoT device 510 via the backscatter link. In such an example, a frequency shift for data backscattering by the ambient IoT device 510 may be based on one or more measurements of the backscatter link (e.g., one or more received power measurements of the backscatter transmitted at 520 via the backscatter link) .

[0196] For example, at 525, the network device 505 may measure the backscatter link between the ambient IoT device 510 and the network device 505. The backscatter link measurement may be examples of one or more backscatter link measurements described with reference to FIG. 2. For example, the backscatter link measurement may include SINR measurements, RSRP measurements, or RSSI measurements, among other examples of received power measurements.

[0197] In some examples, at 530, the network device 505 may determine the frequency shift for data backscattering by the ambient IoT device 510. For example, the network device 505 may determine the frequency shift based on the measurement of the backscatter link at 525 and an SIC capability of a receiver of the backscattered data signal. For example, the network device 505 may determine the frequency shift based on the measurement of the backscatter link at 525 and whether the network device 505 supports SIC (e.g., includes an SIC receiver) .

[0198] In some other examples, at 540, the network device 505 may transmit downlink signaling to the ambient IoT device 510 for measurement of a downlink between the ambient IoT device 510 and the network device 505. For example, the  communication link may include the downlink link and, as such, the measurement scheduling indication may schedule the first resource for transmission of the downlink signaling from the network device 505 via the downlink. In such an example, a frequency shift for data backscattering by the ambient IoT device 510 may be based on one or more measurements of the downlink (e.g., one or more received power measurements of the downlink signaling transmitted at 540 via the downlink) .

[0199] For example, at 545, the ambient IoT device 510 may measure the downlink between the ambient IoT device 510 and the network device 505. The downlink measurement may be examples of one or more downlink measurements (e.g., downlink signal quality measurements) described with reference to FIGs. 2 and 4. For example, the downlink measurement may include SINR measurements, RSRP measurements, or RSSI measurements, among other examples of downlink signal quality measurements.

[0200] In some examples, at 550, the ambient IoT device 510 may select the frequency shift for data backscattering by the ambient IoT device 510. In some examples, the ambient IoT device 510 may select the frequency shift based on the measurement of the downlink at 545. For example, the ambient IoT device 510 may select the frequency shift based on a value of the downlink measurement being within a range of downlink measurement values that are associated with the frequency shift. Additionally, or alternatively, the ambient IoT device 510 may randomly select the frequency shift or may select the frequency shift based on an identifier of the ambient IoT device 510.

[0201] At 535, the network device 505 may transmit second control signaling to the ambient IoT device 510. The second control signaling may include a data scheduling indication, which may be an example of a data scheduling indication illustrated by and described with reference to FIG. 2. For example, the data scheduling indication may schedule a second resource for communication of a backscattered data signal by the ambient IoT device 510 in accordance with the frequency shift, which may be relative to a frequency for backscatter communications by the ambient IoT device 510.

[0202] In some examples, at 555, the network device 505 may receive the backscattered data signal from the ambient IoT device 510 in accordance with the frequency shift. In some examples, the network device 505 may receive the  backscattered data signal from the ambient IoT device 510 based on a query parameter selected at the ambient IoT device 510 satisfying a condition. The ambient IoT device 510 may select the query parameter in accordance with a query protocol for ambient IoT devices.

[0203] FIG. 6 shows an example of a process flow 600 that supports frequency shift determination for ambient devices based on a receiver SIC capability in accordance with one or more aspects of the present disclosure. The process flow 600 may implement or may be implemented by aspects of the wireless communications system 100, the wireless communications system 200, the wireless communications system 300, the frequency shift diagram 400, and the process flow 500. For example, the process flow 600 illustrates operations at a network device 605 and an ambient IoT device 610, which may be an example of the corresponding devices illustrated by and described with reference to FIGs. 1–5. Additionally, the process flow 600 illustrates operations at an assisting node 606, which may be an example of an assisting node illustrated by and described with reference to FIGs. 1–5. The operations performed at the network device 605, the assisting node 606, and the ambient IoT device 610 may support improvements to communications between the network device 605, the assisting node 606, and the ambient IoT device 610, among other benefits. In the following description of the process flow 600, the operations performed at the network device 605, the assisting node 606, and the ambient IoT device 610 may occur in a different order than the example order shown. Additionally, the operations performed at the network device 605, the assisting node 606, and the ambient IoT device 610 may be performed at different times. Some operations may be combined, and some operations may be omitted. In some examples, the network device 605, the assisting node 606, and the ambient IoT device 610 may support a framework for determining a frequency shift for backscatter communications by an ambient IoT device based on whether a receiver of the backscatter communications supports SIC.

[0204] At 615, the network device 605 may transmit a measurement scheduling indication to the assisting node 606. The measurement scheduling indication may be an example of a measurement scheduling indication illustrated by and described with reference to FIG. 3. For example, the measurement scheduling indication may schedule  a first resource for measurement of a communication link (e.g., a downlink or a backscatter link) associated with the ambient IoT device 610.

[0205] In some examples, at 620, the assisting node 606 may transmit (e.g., forward, relay) the measurement scheduling indication to the ambient IoT device 610. For example, the network device 605 may use the assisting node 606 to assist downlink communication between the network device 605 and the ambient IoT device 610. Accordingly, the network device may indicate scheduling for the measurement of the communication link (e.g., a downlink measurement of the downlink between the assisting node 606 and the ambient IoT device 610 or an uplink measurement of the backscatter link between the ambient IoT device 610 and the network device 605) to the assisting node 606 and the assisting node 606 may forward the scheduling for the measurement to the ambient IoT device 610.

[0206] In some examples, at 625, the network device 605 may receive the backscatter from the ambient IoT device 610 via the backscatter link. For example, the communication link may include the backscatter link and, as such, the measurement scheduling indication may schedule the first resource for transmission of the backscatter from the ambient IoT device 610 via the backscatter link. That is, the measurement scheduling indication may schedule an uplink measurement. In such an example, a frequency shift for data backscattering by the ambient IoT device 610 may be based on one or more measurements of the backscatter link (e.g., one or more received power measurements of the backscatter transmitted at 625 via the backscatter link) .

[0207] For example, at 630, the network device 605 may measure the backscatter link between the ambient IoT device 610 and the network device 605. The backscatter link measurement may be examples of one or more backscatter link measurements described with reference to FIG. 3. For example, the backscatter link measurement may include SINR measurements, RSRP measurements, or RSSI measurements, among other examples of received power measurements.

[0208] In some examples, at 635, the network device 605 may determine the frequency shift for data backscattering by the ambient IoT device 610. For example, the network device 605 may determine the frequency shift based on the measurement of the backscatter link at 630 and an SIC capability of a receiver of the backscattered data  signal. For example, the network device 605 may determine the frequency shift based on the measurement of the backscatter link at 630 and whether the network device 605 supports SIC (e.g., includes an SIC receiver) . In some other examples, the communication link may include the downlink and the assisting node 606 may transmit downlink signaling to the ambient IoT device 610 for measurement of the downlink. That is, in some other examples, the measurement scheduling indication may schedule a downlink measurement.

[0209] At 640, the network device 605 may transmit a data scheduling indication to the assisting node 606. The data scheduling indication may be an example of a data scheduling indication illustrated by and described with reference to FIG. 3. For example, the data scheduling indication may schedule a second resource for communication of a backscattered data signal by the ambient IoT device 610 in accordance with the frequency shift, which may be relative to a frequency for backscatter communications by the ambient IoT device 610.

[0210] In some examples, at 645, the assisting node 606 may transmit (e.g., forward, relay) the data scheduling indication to the ambient IoT device 610. For example, because the network device 605 may use the assisting node 606 to assist downlink communication between the network device 605 and the ambient IoT device 610, the network device 605 may indicate scheduling for uplink data to the assisting node 606 and the assisting node 606 may forward the scheduling for the uplink data to the ambient IoT device 610.

[0211] In some examples, at 650, the network device 605 may receive the backscattered data signal from the ambient IoT device 610 in accordance with the frequency shift. In some examples, receiving the backscattered data signal from the ambient IoT device 610 in accordance with the frequency shift may improve decoding of the backscattered data signal at the network device 605, among other benefits.

[0212] FIG. 7 shows an example of a process flow 700 that supports frequency shift determination for ambient devices based on a receiver SIC capability in accordance with one or more aspects of the present disclosure. The process flow 700 may implement or may be implemented by aspects of the wireless communications system 100, the wireless communications system 200, the wireless communications system 300, the  frequency shift diagram 400, the process flow 500, and the process flow 600. For example, the process flow 700 illustrates operations at a network device 705, an assisting node 706, and an ambient IoT device 710, which may be an example of the corresponding devices illustrated by and described with reference to FIGs. 1–6. The operations performed at the network device 705, the assisting node 706, and the ambient IoT device 710 may support improvements to communications between the network device 705, the assisting node 706, and the ambient IoT device 710, among other benefits. In the following description of the process flow 700, the operations performed at the network device 705, the assisting node 706, and the ambient IoT device 710 may occur in a different order than the example order shown. Additionally, the operations performed at the network device 705, the assisting node 706, and the ambient IoT device 710 may be performed at different times. Some operations may be combined, and some operations may be omitted. In some examples, the network device 705, the assisting node 706, and the ambient IoT device 710 may support a framework for determining a frequency shift for backscatter communications by an ambient IoT device based on whether a receiver of the backscatter communications supports SIC. In some examples, the receiver of the backscatter communications from the ambient IoT device 710 may include the assisting node 706. In such examples, the frequency shift for backscatter communications by the ambient IoT device 710 may be based on whether the assisting node 706 supports SIC.

[0213] For example, at 715, the network device 705 may receive an SIC capability indication from the assisting node 706. The SIC capability indication may be an example of an SIC capability indication illustrated by and described with reference to FIG. 3. For example, the SIC capability indication may indicate whether the assisting node 706 supports SIC (e.g., includes an SIC receiver) .

[0214] At 720, the network device 705 may transmit a measurement scheduling indication to the assisting node 706. The measurement scheduling indication may be an example of a measurement scheduling indication illustrated by and described with reference to FIG. 3. For example, the measurement scheduling indication may schedule a first resource for measurement of a backscatter link between the ambient IoT device 710 and the assisting node 706. That is, the measurement scheduling indication may  schedule the first resource for reception, at the assisting node 706, of backscatter from the ambient IoT device 710 for measurement of the backscatter link.

[0215] In some examples, at 725, the network device 705 may transmit a second measurement scheduling indication to the ambient IoT device 710. The second measurement scheduling indication may be an example of a measurement scheduling indication illustrated by and described with reference to FIG. 3. For example, the second measurement scheduling indication may schedule the first resource for the measurement of the backscatter link between the ambient IoT device 710 and the assisting node 706. That is, the second measurement scheduling indication may schedule the first resource for communication of the backscatter from the ambient IoT device 710 for measurement of the backscatter link. In other words, the second measurement scheduling indication may include the scheduling for the backscatter link measurement at the assisting node 706.

[0216] In some examples, at 730, the assisting node 706 may receive the backscatter from the ambient IoT device 710 via the backscatter link. In such examples, a frequency shift for data backscattering by the ambient IoT device 710 may be based on one or more measurements at the assisting node 706 of the backscatter link (e.g., one or more received power measurements of the backscatter transmitted at 625 via the backscatter link) and the SIC capability of the assisting node 706.

[0217] For example, at 735, the assisting node 706 may measure the backscatter link between the ambient IoT device 710 and the assisting node 706. The backscatter link measurement may be examples of one or more backscatter link measurements described with reference to FIG. 3. For example, the backscatter link measurement may include SINR measurements, RSRP measurements, or RSSI measurements, among other examples of received power measurements.

[0218] In some examples, at 740, the network device 705 may receive a measurement indication from the assisting node 706. The measurement indication may indicate the measurement results for the backscatter link (e.g., at 735) . The frequency shift for data backscattering by the ambient IoT device 710 may be based on the measurement indication (e.g., and the SIC capability indication received at 715) . For example, the measurement indication may include information indicative of the  measurement of the backscatter sent via the backscatter link. In some examples, the information may be indicative of the frequency shift for data backscattering by the ambient IoT device 710, a received power value associated with the ambient IoT device 710 (e.g., a received power value of the backscatter sent via the backscatter link) , or a minimum received power value associated with a group of multiple ambient IoT devices that includes the ambient IoT device, or any combination thereof.

[0219] At 745, the network device 705 may transmit a data scheduling indication to the assisting node 706. The data scheduling indication may be an example of a data scheduling indication illustrated by and described with reference to FIG. 3. For example, the data scheduling indication may schedule a second resource for reception of a backscattered data signal from the ambient IoT device 710 in accordance with the frequency shift, which may be relative to a frequency for backscatter communications by the ambient IoT device 710.

[0220] In some examples, at 645, the assisting node 606 may transmit (e.g., forward, relay) the data scheduling indication to the ambient IoT device 610.

[0221] In some examples, at 750, the network device 705 may transmit a second data scheduling indication to the ambient IoT device 710. The second data scheduling indication may be an example of a data scheduling indication illustrated by and described with reference to FIG. 3. For example, the second data scheduling indication may schedule the second resource for the communication of the backscattered data signal via the backscatter link between the ambient IoT device 710 and the assisting node 706. That is, the second data scheduling indication may schedule the second resource for communication of the backscattered data signal from the ambient IoT device 710. In other words, the second measurement scheduling indication may include the scheduling for communication of uplink data from the ambient IoT device 710.

[0222] In some examples, at 755, the assisting node 706 may receive the backscattered data signal from the ambient IoT device 610 in accordance with the frequency shift. The backscattered data signal may be an example of a backscattered data signal illustrated by and described with reference to FIG. 3. For example, the backscattered data signal may include data (e.g., a data message) . The assisting node 706 may forward the data to the network device 705.

[0223] For example, at 760, the network device 605 may receive a data signal indication from the assisting node 706. The data signal indication may include (or be indicative of) the data sent via the backscattered data signal at 755. In some examples, receiving the data signal indication from the assisting node 706 may improve network connectivity between the ambient IoT device 710 and the network device 705, among other benefits.

[0224] FIG. 8 shows a block diagram 800 of a device 805 that supports frequency shift determination for ambient devices based on a receiver SIC capability in accordance with one or more aspects of the present disclosure. The device 805 may be an example of aspects of a network entity 105 as described herein. The device 805 may include a receiver 810, a transmitter 815, and a communications manager 820. The device 805, or one or more components of the device 805 (e.g., the receiver 810, the transmitter 815, and the communications manager 820) , may include at least one processor, which may be coupled with at least one memory, to, individually or collectively, support or enable the described techniques. Each of these components may be in communication with one another (e.g., via one or more buses) .

[0238] FIG. 10 shows a block diagram 1000 of a communications manager 1020 that supports frequency shift determination for ambient devices based on a receiver SIC capability in accordance with one or more aspects of the present disclosure. The communications manager 1020 may be an example of aspects of a communications manager 820, a communications manager 920, or both, as described herein. The communications manager 1020, or various components thereof, may be an example of means for performing various aspects of frequency shift determination for ambient  devices based on a receiver SIC capability as described herein. For example, the communications manager 1020 may include a measurement scheduling component 1025, a frequency shift component 1030, a backscatter measurement component 1035, a signal quality range component 1040, a backscatter scheduling component 1045, a capability indication component 1050, a query parameter component 1055, a power indication component 1060, or any combination thereof. Each of these components, or components or subcomponents thereof (e.g., one or more processors, one or more memories) , may communicate, directly or indirectly, with one another (e.g., via one or more buses) which may include communications within a protocol layer of a protocol stack, communications associated with a logical channel of a protocol stack (e.g., between protocol layers of a protocol stack, within a device, component, or virtualized component associated with a network entity 105, between devices, components, or virtualized components associated with a network entity 105) , or any combination thereof.

[0239] The communications manager 1020 may support wireless communication in accordance with examples as disclosed herein. The measurement scheduling component 1025 is capable of, configured to, or operable to support a means for transmitting first control signaling that schedules a first resource for measurement of a communication link associated with an ambient IoT device. The frequency shift component 1030 is capable of, configured to, or operable to support a means for transmitting second control signaling that schedules a second resource for communication of a backscattered data signal by the ambient IoT device in accordance with a frequency shift relative to a frequency for backscatter communications by the ambient IoT device, the frequency shift being based on the measurement of the communication link and a SIC capability of a receiver of the backscattered data signal.

[0240] In some examples, to support transmitting the first control signaling, the measurement scheduling component 1025 is capable of, configured to, or operable to support a means for transmitting, via the first control signaling, a first indication that schedules the first resource for measurement of first backscatter from the ambient IoT device via a backscatter link, where the communication link includes the backscatter link, and where the frequency shift is based on the measurement of the first backscatter.

[0241] In some examples, the measurement scheduling component 1025 is capable of, configured to, or operable to support a means for transmitting a second indication that schedules a third resource for measurement of second backscatter from a second ambient IoT device, where the first backscatter and the second backscatter are associated with the same frequency, and where the first resource and the third resource correspond to different time domain resources.

[0242] In some examples, the measurement scheduling component 1025 is capable of, configured to, or operable to support a means for transmitting a second indication that schedules a third resource for measurement of second backscatter from a second ambient IoT device, where the first backscatter is associated with a first frequency and the second backscatter is associated with a second frequency different from the first frequency.

[0243] In some examples, a difference between the first frequency and the second frequency satisfies a threshold frequency difference that is based on one or more first harmonics associated with the first frequency and one or more second harmonics associated with the second frequency.

[0244] In some examples, the SIC capability corresponds to a capability of the receiver to support SIC. In some examples, the frequency shift is based on a power difference threshold associated with decoding the backscattered data signal using SIC.

[0248] In some examples, a power difference between a received power value associated with the first frequency and an interference power value associated with the second frequency satisfies a power difference threshold for concurrently decoding the backscattered data signal and the second backscattered data signal. In some examples, the interference power value corresponds to a summation of a set of multiple received power values associated with a set of multiple harmonics of the second frequency.

[0249] In some examples, the first frequency being the harmonic of the second frequency is based on the SIC capability including a capability of the receiver to decode the backscattered data signal after the second backscattered data signal using SIC.

[0250] In some examples, the backscatter measurement component 1035 is capable of, configured to, or operable to support a means for measuring, over the first resource, a received power value associated with backscatter from the ambient IoT device via a backscatter link, where the backscatter link includes the communication link, and where the frequency shift is based on the received power value.

[0307] FIG. 14 shows a block diagram 1400 of a communications manager 1420 that supports frequency shift determination for ambient devices based on a receiver SIC  capability in accordance with one or more aspects of the present disclosure. The communications manager 1420 may be an example of aspects of a communications manager 1220, a communications manager 1320, or both, as described herein. The communications manager 1420, or various components thereof, may be an example of means for performing various aspects of frequency shift determination for ambient devices based on a receiver SIC capability as described herein. For example, the communications manager 1420 may include a measurement scheduling component 1425, a frequency shift component 1430, a measurement indication component 1435, an SIC capability component 1440, a backscatter measurement component 1445, a backscatter indication component 1450, a downlink measurement component 1455, a signal quality range component 1460, a backscatter scheduling component 1465, a capability indication component 1470, a frequency shift indication component 1475, a query parameter component 1480, a power indication component 1485, a backscatter component 1490, or any combination thereof. Each of these components, or components or subcomponents thereof (e.g., one or more processors, one or more memories) , may communicate, directly or indirectly, with one another (e.g., via one or more buses) .

[0308] The communications manager 1420 may support wireless communication in accordance with examples as disclosed herein. The measurement scheduling component 1425 is capable of, configured to, or operable to support a means for transmitting first control signaling that schedules a first resource for measurement of a communication link associated with an ambient IoT device. The frequency shift component 1430 is capable of, configured to, or operable to support a means for transmitting second control signaling that schedules a second resource for communication of a backscattered data signal by the ambient IoT device in accordance with a frequency shift relative to a frequency for backscatter communications by the ambient IoT device, the frequency shift being based on the measurement of the communication link and a SIC capability of a receiver of the backscattered data signal.

[0309] In some examples, to support transmitting the first control signaling, the measurement scheduling component 1425 is capable of, configured to, or operable to support a means for transmitting, via the first control signaling, a first indication that schedules the first resource for measurement of first backscatter from the ambient IoT  device via a backscatter link, where the communication link includes the backscatter link, and where the frequency shift is based on the measurement of the first backscatter.

[0310] In some examples, the measurement scheduling component 1425 is capable of, configured to, or operable to support a means for transmitting a second indication that schedules a third resource for measurement of second backscatter from a second ambient IoT device, where the first backscatter and the second backscatter are associated with the same frequency, and where the first resource and the third resource correspond to different time domain resources.

[0311] In some examples, the measurement scheduling component 1425 is capable of, configured to, or operable to support a means for transmitting a second indication that schedules a third resource for measurement of second backscatter from a second ambient IoT device, where the first backscatter is associated with a first frequency and the second backscatter is associated with a second frequency different from the first frequency.

[0312] In some examples, a difference between the first frequency and the second frequency satisfies a threshold frequency difference that is based on one or more first harmonics associated with the first frequency and one or more second harmonics associated with the second frequency.

[0313] In some examples, the SIC capability corresponds to a capability of the receiver to support SIC. In some examples, the frequency shift is based on a power difference threshold associated with decoding the backscattered data signal using SIC.

[0314] In some examples, the frequency shift component 1430 is capable of, configured to, or operable to support a means for transmitting third control signaling that schedules the second resource for communication of a second backscattered data signal from a second ambient IoT device in accordance with the frequency shift based on a power difference between a first received power value associated with backscatter communication from the ambient IoT device and a second received power value associated with backscatter communication from the second ambient IoT device satisfying the power difference threshold.

[0315] In some examples, the power difference satisfying the power difference threshold is based on a first spatial distance between the first device and the ambient IoT device being different from a second spatial distance between the first device and the second ambient IoT device.

[0317] In some examples, a power difference between a received power value associated with the first frequency and an interference power value associated with the second frequency satisfies a power difference threshold for concurrently decoding the backscattered data signal and the second backscattered data signal. In some examples, the interference power value corresponds to a summation of a set of multiple received power values associated with a set of multiple harmonics of the second frequency.

[0318] In some examples, the first frequency being the harmonic of the second frequency is based on the SIC capability including a capability of the receiver to decode the backscattered data signal after the second backscattered data signal using SIC.

[0319] In some examples, the backscatter measurement component 1445 is capable of, configured to, or operable to support a means for measuring, over the first resource, a received power value associated with backscatter from the ambient IoT device via a backscatter link, where the backscatter link includes the communication link, and where the frequency shift is based on the received power value.

[0320] In some examples, to support transmitting the first control signaling, the measurement scheduling component 1425 is capable of, configured to, or operable to support a means for transmitting, via the first control signaling, a first indication that schedules the first resource for a signal quality measurement of downlink signaling from the first device via a downlink, where the communication link includes the downlink and the frequency shift is based on a value of the signal quality measurement.

[0321] In some examples, the signal quality range component 1460 is capable of, configured to, or operable to support a means for transmitting a second indication of a respective range of signal quality values associated with each frequency shift of a set of multiple frequency shifts for backscatter communication by the ambient IoT device, where the frequency shift is based on the value being within a range of signal quality values associated with the frequency shift.

[0322] In some examples, the query parameter component 1480 is capable of, configured to, or operable to support a means for receiving the backscattered data signal from the ambient IoT device in accordance with the frequency shift based on the ambient IoT device being associated with a query parameter that satisfies a condition, the query parameter corresponding to a query protocol for ambient IoT devices.

[0323] In some examples, the range of signal quality values is associated with a set of frequency shifts of the set of multiple frequency shifts. In some examples, the frequency shift is randomly selected from among the set of frequency shifts.

[0324] In some examples, the range of signal quality values is associated with a set of frequency shifts of the set of multiple frequency shifts. In some examples, the frequency shift is based on an identifier of the ambient IoT device.

[0325] In some examples, to support transmitting the first control signaling, the measurement scheduling component 1425 is capable of, configured to, or operable to support a means for transmitting the first control signaling to the ambient IoT device via a second device associated with assisting downlink communications by the first device, where the first control signaling schedules the first resource for measurement of first backscatter from the ambient IoT device via a backscatter link, where the backscatter link includes the communication link, and where the frequency shift is based on the measurement of the first backscatter.

[0326] In some examples, the measurement scheduling component 1425 is capable of, configured to, or operable to support a means for transmitting third control signaling to a second ambient IoT device via a third device associated with assisting communications by the first device, the third control signaling scheduling a third resource for measurement of second backscatter from the second ambient IoT device, where the first resource and the third resource correspond to different time domain  resources, and where the first backscatter is associated with a first continuous wave signal and the second backscatter is associated with a second continuous wave signal that has the same center frequency and the same transmit power value as the first continuous wave signal.

[0327] In some examples, the measurement scheduling component 1425 is capable of, configured to, or operable to support a means for transmitting third control signaling to a second ambient IoT device via a third device associated with assisting communications by the first device, the third control signaling scheduling the first resource for measurement of second backscatter from the second ambient IoT device, where the first backscatter and the second backscatter are associated with different frequency shifts.

[0328] In some examples, the measurement scheduling component 1425 is capable of, configured to, or operable to support a means for transmitting third control signaling to a second ambient IoT device via a third device associated with assisting communications by the first device, the third control signaling scheduling the first resource for measurement of second backscatter from the second ambient IoT device, and where the first backscatter is associated with a first continuous wave signal and the second backscatter is associated with a second continuous wave signal that has a different center frequency than the first continuous wave signal.

[0329] In some examples, the measurement scheduling component 1425 is capable of, configured to, or operable to support a means for transmitting third control signaling to the ambient IoT device via the second device, the third control signaling scheduling a third resource for measurement of second backscatter from the ambient IoT device, where the frequency shift is based on the measurement of the second backscatter.

[0330] In some examples, a set of multiple ambient IoT devices are scheduled to backscatter over the first resource. In some examples, transmission of the third control signaling is based on a minimum or average received power value associated with the set of multiple ambient IoT devices failing to satisfy a threshold.

[0331] In some examples, a set of multiple ambient IoT devices are scheduled to backscatter over the first resource. In some examples, each ambient IoT device of a portion of the set of multiple ambient IoT devices are associated with a respective  received power value that fails to satisfy a first threshold. In some examples, transmission of the third control signaling is based on a quantity of ambient IoT device included in the portion satisfying a second threshold.

[0332] In some examples, the first backscatter is associated with a first transmit power value and the second backscatter is associated with a second transmit power value that is greater than the first transmit power value.
