Abstract
Description
[0001] Artificial vagina for collecting sperm from South American camelids
[0002] TECHNICAL FIELD
[0003] The present invention applies to the technical field of medicine, being a device that is responsible for collecting semen from camelids, more specifically it refers to an artificial vagina for collecting semen from South American camelids with pressure and temperature regulation.
[0004] BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
[0005] Alpacas are a species with very specific reproductive management; therefore, species-specific considerations are required to obtain semen samples. The artificial vagina currently used is a generic model taken from other species, which completely ignores alpaca reproductive physiology. Given this, it is important to note that this model features the specific shape of the cervix, or neck of the uterus. From there, two long tubes can be seen that simulate the horns, which join at a point where the sample will be collected. It also has built-in temperature control.
[0006] It is known that only 60% of males are capable of producing seminal samples. This could be because the state-of-the-art vaginas currently used do not respect the female's specific anatomy and therefore do not adequately stimulate the male as they should.
[0007] For example, the state of the art includes patent document CN100490760C, published on May 27, 2009, which refers to a temperature-controlled alpaca sperm collection platform that emits the structure of the cervix, with a 220 V, 50 W heating resistor coupled between the inner tube and the pseudo-vaginal housing of the device, with a digital display temperature controller that measures temperatures between 0.1 ° C and 100 ° C. This device includes a water injection pressurization valve. Furthermore, the inner tube of this device has a concave structure and a length of 3 cm. The two ends of the concave part form a "V" and a sponge support layer (folds) is placed around the concave part, as can be seen in Figure 5. Additionally, a removable sperm collection tube is arranged inside the metal casing through a ring that fixes said tube.However, this precedent does not include a bend at one of its ends nor a bifurcation into two conduits of the metal body.
[0008] Also known is US5685871A, published on November 11, 1997, which relates to an apparatus for collecting semen, wherein the inner jacket is made of an elastic material, the temperature within the annular volume being adjustable by intermittently or continuously passing a heating fluid at a temperature of more than 30°C through the annular volume, or by selectively operating electric heating elements arranged in the annular volume. The inner jacket is disposable, i.e., it can be replaced with a new one after use. The collecting funnel can be said to have the shape of a downwardly curved horn, the upper part gently curving downwards forming the rear wall of the collecting funnel. The rear wall is curved from the receiving opening to the discharge opening at an angle of approximately 90°.
[0009] Another prior document is CN101212936A, published on July 2, 2008, which refers to a device for collecting animal semen adaptable to an artificial vagina, which can have lateral arm branches that hold a filter bag. However, this prior document only refers to a collection device and does not include cervix-like cavities or folds within the main body.
[0010] Alpacas are animals with very specific reproductive characteristics, which means that the stimulation they require to initiate erection and subsequent ejaculation is very specific. Using an artificial vagina model that doesn't meet the anatomical characteristics of the species could mean that a large percentage of males are unable to be trained to use it.
[0011] The artificial vagina for semen collection in South American camelids faces several technical challenges, including the need for a bifurcated and double-folded duct similar to a camelid uterus; the need to maintain adequate temperature to preserve semen viability and quality; the importance of providing realistic stimulation to the male for efficient collection; the protection of collected semen from external factors such as light and temperature fluctuations; the physically demanding handling of the device, which increases the risk of accidents or spillage; the risk of semen contamination and loss during collection; and the need for accurate measurement of the collected semen volume for use in artificial insemination and quality assessments. These issues represent significant challenges in the semen collection process in these animals, impacting the efficiency and effectiveness of the procedure.
[0012] DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
[0013] As a solution to the aforementioned problems, the present invention was developed, which refers to an artificial vagina for collecting semen from South American camelids with pressure and temperature regulation of the type comprising a tubular metal body, where the vagina has the following main characteristics:
[0014] • Inside the metal body there is a cylindrical cervix (2) that has an orifice (3) at one end, while at its other end it has two ducts (7) attached like uterine horns, the ducts (7) of the cervix (2) corresponding to a fold of the metal body (1);
[0015] • on the inner part of the cervix (2), a plurality of folds (5) are arranged; while, at the end of the cervix (2) opposite the ducts (7), a covering (4) is arranged with an oval vertical incision in the form of a vulva; and,
[0016] • through the bend of the metal body (1), a removable conical sleeve (8) is attached that covers the ducts (7) and has a threadable end where a collector tube (9) is inserted.
[0017] The proposed artificial vagina for semen collection in South American camelids is an innovative device designed to accurately simulate the anatomy and conditions of the female reproductive tract. After an exhaustive analysis of the natural movement of the penis, and through experimental studies that record the electrical activity of the muscles involved in the copulation process of the male and female, it was determined that the penis of South American camelids, such as the alpaca, has a natural movement from side to side, from left to right, to be introduced alternately between the two uterine horns of the alpaca or other similar camelids with a bicornuate uterus, being that the penis has a specialized structure that allows this alternate movement during copulation.This alternating movement is a natural act that maximizes the chances of the sperm reaching the ovaries and fertilizing the female's eggs. This is why the present invention proposes an artificial vagina that mainly has one end that divides or bifurcates into two ducts like uterine horns, to resemble the natural act of copulation and have a more efficient and representative collection, increasing the amount of semen collected.
[0018] In conjunction with the above, it has been identified that the forked end should have a fold or inclination similar to the camelid's vagina, so in the proposed invention the fold is made downwards in order to contribute to the natural displacement of semen by gravity towards the collection tube, where this fold is preferably 30 to 50 degrees, even more preferably 45° with respect to the rest of the body of the vagina or with respect to the horizontal line, which mimics the natural inclination and orientation of the female's reproductive tract. It has been identified that this range of inclination degrees is ergonomic and natural for the act of copulation, more degrees of inclination than indicated could be counterproductive and even cause pain in the male's penis, and fewer degrees than indicated would not produce the natural pressure to which the camelid's penis is subjected.The alignment of the cervical ducts with the bend in the metal body is a key feature that ensures the semen flow is effectively directed toward the collection ducts. This intelligent device design facilitates semen collection for use in artificial insemination and genetic improvement programs, playing a crucial role in species conservation and improving the genetic characteristics of camelids.
[0019] Furthermore, the use of this artificial vagina offers significant advantages in terms of animal safety and welfare, as it reduces the risk of injury to both males and females by eliminating the need for physical mating. It also contributes to health control, reducing the risk of sexually transmitted disease transmission between animals by collecting semen in a controlled environment without direct contact. Thus, this artificial vagina represents an advanced and specialized tool that significantly improves the efficiency and safety of semen collection processes in South American camelids, making it essential in conservation, genetic improvement, and reproductive management programs for these species.
[0020] The artificial vagina designed for semen collection in South American camelids includes specific internal features that enhance its effectiveness and realism. Within the cervix, the presence of a plurality of folds is relevant. These folds mimic the natural texture and topography of the female reproductive tract, providing a snug fit and more realistic stimulation for the male. This similarity to real anatomy is essential for inducing successful ejaculation, as it recreates the environment the male is accustomed to during natural intercourse. Furthermore, the folds can help retain the collected semen, thus minimizing its loss and ensuring more efficient collection.
[0021] Inside the metal body is a cylindrical, latex-shaped cervix. The use of latex can be strategic, as this material provides a texture and resistance similar to that of the female reproductive tract, which is essential for adequately stimulating the male during the semen collection process.
[0022] On the other hand, at the end of the cervix opposite the ducts, there is a silicone sheath with an oval vertical incision that simulates the vulva. This feature is important because it offers a more realistic entrance for the male, contributing to the sensation of a natural environment during the semen collection process. Silicone is an ideal material for this purpose, given its flexibility, durability, and skin-like texture, providing an authentic tactile experience, which is vital for normal male sexual behavior.
[0023] These innovations in artificial vagina design not only improve the efficiency of semen collection but also contribute to the well-being of the animals involved. By providing an environment that closely mimics the anatomy and sensation of a real female, a more natural sexual response in the male is facilitated, resulting in more successful and efficient semen collection. This is especially important in assisted reproduction and genetic improvement programs, where semen quality and quantity are critical.
[0024] In this sense, the inclusion of internal folds and a silicone covering that simulates the vulva are important elements of the artificial vagina, significantly improving its functionality and effectiveness for semen collection in South American camelids. These features not only increase the likelihood of successful collection but also reduce stress and discomfort in the animals, which is critical for their well-being during the process.
[0025] The artificial vagina designed for semen collection in South American camelids includes a conical sheath and a collecting tube, crucial elements for the semen collection and handling process. The conical sheath, which snaps onto the fold of the vagina's metal body, serves an important function by covering the ducts that transport semen from the cervix to the collecting tube. This sheath ensures a smooth semen transition, preventing spillage or contamination, and its conical design guarantees a secure and effective fit.
[0026] At one end of this conical sheath is a threaded system designed for inserting the collection tube. This threaded connection is essential for maintaining the sterility and integrity of the system, thus preserving the quality of the collected semen. The easy screwing and unscrewing of the collection tube facilitates its handling, allowing for simple installation and efficient semen extraction for subsequent analysis or use in artificial insemination.
[0027] The collection tube, for its part, is transparent and features graduation marks. The tube's transparency allows technicians to observe and monitor the semen during the collection process, which is essential to ensure a successful collection. The graduation marks are equally important, as they provide an accurate measurement of the collected semen volume—crucial information for correctly dosing semen in artificial insemination procedures and for assessing the male's reproductive performance. These components, the conical sheath and the collection tube, play a vital role in the efficiency and accuracy of the semen collection process. They offer a closed and secure system that minimizes the risk of contamination, maintaining semen quality. Furthermore, the ability to accurately measure the volume of collected semen is essential for planning and implementing assisted reproduction and genetic improvement programs in South American camelids.In summary, the inclusion of these elements in the artificial vagina reflects careful consideration of the practical and sanitary needs in collecting semen from these animals.
[0028] The polyurethane foam outer covering on the metal body of the artificial vagina for semen collection in South American camelids has multiple uses that are crucial to the device's performance and effectiveness.
[0029] First and foremost, the polyurethane foam acts as a thermal insulator. Since semen must be collected and maintained at a specific temperature to preserve its viability, the foam helps maintain this temperature constant. This insulation is particularly important in environments where temperatures can fluctuate, ensuring that the interior of the device remains in optimal conditions for semen collection and preservation.
[0030] Additionally, the polyurethane foam provides a layer of physical protection for the device. Handling during the semen collection process can be rigorous, and the foam helps protect the metal body from accidental impacts or damage. This not only increases the device's durability but also ensures its proper and safe operation over time.
[0031] Another advantage of polyurethane foam is its lightness and comfort to the touch. During the harvesting process, the device may need to be held or adjusted to different positions. The foam makes the device more manageable and easier to manipulate, which can improve process efficiency and reduce operator fatigue.
[0032] The polyurethane foam layer in the metal body of the artificial vagina is a thoughtful feature that improves the device's efficiency. It provides thermal insulation to maintain the proper temperature, physical protection to increase durability, and more comfortable and safe handling, all of which contribute to more successful and efficient semen collection in South American camelids.
[0033] In a preferred embodiment, a leather drawstring bag attaches over the sheath to protect the collection tube from outside light. This bag serves a crucial function: protecting the collection tube from exposure to outside light. Light can negatively affect the quality and viability of collected semen, so keeping it in the dark during the collection and storage process is essential. Leather, being a durable and opaque material, is ideal for this purpose. Furthermore, the drawstring design ensures that the bag can be securely fitted around the sheath, thus providing effective protection and maintaining optimal conditions to preserve the integrity of the semen until later analysis or use in artificial insemination.In a preferred embodiment, the outer surface of the sleeve has an annular groove for the effective attachment of the adjustable cord, such that the bag remains in a single fixed position and is prevented from slipping on the sleeve.

[0051] PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS OF THE INVENTION
[0052] As mentioned above, the present invention is an artificial vagina for collecting semen from South American camelids with pressure and temperature regulation of the type comprising a tubular metal body (1) arranged in a horizontal position that has a downward bend, preferably 30 to 50°, at one of its ends, characterized in that:
[0053] • inside the metal body (1) there is a cylindrical cervix (2), preferably made of latex, which at one end has an orifice (3), while at its other end it has two ducts (7) attached like uterine horns, the ducts (7) of the cervix (2) corresponding to the fold of the metal body (1);
[0054] • on the inner part of the cervix (2), there is a plurality of folds (5); while, at the end of the cervix (2) opposite the ducts (7), there is a silicone covering (4) with an oval vertical incision in the shape of a vulva;
[0055] • by bending the metal body (1), a removable and pressure-adjustable conical sleeve (8) is fitted at one end, which covers the ducts (7) and has a threadable end where a collector tube (9) is inserted; • the collector tube (9) has graduation marks and is transparent;
[0056] • between the metal body (1) and the cervix (2), a plurality of electrical resistors have been arranged; and
[0057] • the metal body (1) is covered externally by a layer of insulating material, preferably polyurethane foam.
[0058] The artificial vagina for semen collection in South American camelids is an innovative device designed to accurately simulate the anatomy and conditions of the female reproductive tract. This instrument consists of a tubular metal body (1), placed horizontally and bent downwards at one end, preferably between 30 and 50 degrees, more preferably 45 degrees, mimicking the natural inclination and orientation of the female reproductive tract. This feature is crucial to facilitate the insertion of the male penis and promote efficient and natural ejaculation.
[0059] In a preferred embodiment, inside the metal body (1) there is a cervix (2) made of latex in a cylindrical shape. The use of latex is strategic, since this material provides a texture and resistance similar to those of the female reproductive tract, which is essential to adequately stimulate the male during the semen collection process. In another preferred embodiment, the cervix can be made of other soft materials such as medical grade silicone or silica gel. At one end of the cervix (2) there is an orifice (3), while at the other end there are two conduits (7) that simulate the uterine horns, designed to direct the semen towards the collection containers. This configuration ensures efficient semen collection and minimizes its loss.
[0060] The alignment of the ducts (7) of the cervix (2) with the fold of the metal body (1) is a key feature that ensures that the semen flow is effectively directed towards the collection ducts (7). This intelligent design of the device facilitates the collection of semen for use in artificial insemination and genetic improvement programs, playing a crucial role in species conservation and improving the genetic characteristics of camelids. Furthermore, the use of this artificial vagina offers significant advantages in terms of animal safety and welfare, as it reduces the risk of injury to both males and females by eliminating the need for physical mating. It also contributes to health control, decreasing the risk of transmission of sexually transmitted diseases between animals by collecting semen in a controlled environment and without direct contact.
[0061] In this way, this artificial vagina represents an advanced and specialized tool that significantly improves the efficiency and safety of semen collection processes in South American camelids, being fundamental in conservation, genetic improvement, and reproductive management programs for these species.
[0062] The artificial vagina designed for semen collection in South American camelids includes specific internal features that enhance its effectiveness and realism. In the internal part of the cervix (2), the presence of a plurality of folds (5) plays a crucial role. These folds (5) mimic the natural texture and topography of the female reproductive tract, providing more realistic and effective stimulation for the male. This similarity to real anatomy is essential for inducing successful ejaculation, as it recreates the environment the male is accustomed to during natural intercourse. Furthermore, the folds (5) can help retain the collected semen, thus minimizing its loss and ensuring more efficient collection.
[0063] On the other hand, at the end of the cervix (2) opposite the ducts (7), there is a silicone cover (4) with an oval vertical incision that simulates the vulva. This feature is significant because it offers a more realistic entrance for the male, contributing to the sensation of a natural environment during the semen collection process. Silicone is an ideal material for this purpose, since its flexibility, durability and skin-like texture provide an authentic tactile experience, which is vital for normal male sexual behavior.
[0064] These innovations in artificial vagina design not only improve the efficiency of semen collection but also contribute to the well-being of the animals involved. By providing an environment that closely mimics the anatomy and sensation of a real female, a more natural sexual response in the male is facilitated, resulting in more successful and efficient semen collection. This is especially important in assisted reproduction and genetic improvement programs, where semen quality and quantity are critical.
[0065] In this sense, the inclusion of internal folds (5) and a silicone cover (4) that simulates the vulva are key elements in the artificial vagina, significantly improving its functionality and effectiveness for semen collection in South American camelids. These features not only increase the probability of successful collection, but also reduce stress and discomfort in the animals, which is essential for their well-being during the process.
[0066] The artificial vagina designed for semen collection in South American camelids includes a conical sheath (8) and a collecting tube (9), crucial elements for the semen collection and handling process. The conical sheath (8), which fits into the fold of the metal body (1) of the vagina, plays an important role by covering the ducts (7) that transport semen from the cervix (2) to the collecting tube (9). This sheath (8) ensures a smooth transition of semen, avoiding spills or contamination, and its conical design guarantees a secure and effective fit.
[0067] At one end of this conical sheath (8) is a threaded system designed for inserting the collection tube (9). This threaded connection is essential for maintaining the sterility and integrity of the system, thus preserving the quality of the collected semen. The ease with which the collection tube (9) can be screwed and unscrewed makes it easy to handle, allowing for simple installation and efficient semen extraction for subsequent analysis or use in artificial insemination.
[0068] The collection tube (9), for its part, is transparent and has graduation marks. The transparency of the tube allows technicians to observe and monitor the semen during the collection process, which is essential to ensure a successful collection. The graduation marks are equally important, as they provide an accurate measurement of the volume of semen collected, crucial information for dosing semen correctly in artificial insemination procedures and for evaluating the reproductive performance of the male. These components, the conical sleeve (8) and the collection tube (9), play a vital role in the efficiency and accuracy of the semen collection process. They offer a closed and secure system that minimizes the risk of contamination, maintaining semen quality.Furthermore, the ability to accurately measure the volume of collected semen is essential for the planning and implementation of assisted reproduction and genetic improvement programs in South American camelids. In short, the inclusion of these elements in the artificial vagina reflects careful consideration of the practical and sanitary needs of semen collection from these animals.
[0069] The inclusion of a plurality of electrical resistors between the metallic body (1) and the cervix (2) in the artificial vagina designed for semen collection in South American camelids has a very specific and vital utility: the regulation of temperature within the device. This feature significantly improves the effectiveness of semen collection for several reasons.
[0070] Temperature is a crucial factor in semen viability and quality. Semen must be collected and maintained at a temperature that mimics the female's natural body temperature to maintain its viability and quality. Electrical heating elements or a thermally insulated chamber allow the interior of the device to be heated to an optimal temperature for ejaculation and semen preservation. This is especially important in cold environments or in situations where the ambient temperature may be lower than ideal for semen collection.
[0071] Furthermore, the warming provided to the interior of the cervix helps create a more natural and comfortable environment for the male. This is essential for inducing an effective sexual response and successful ejaculation, as the comfort and sensation of a natural environment are factors that can significantly influence a male's sexual behavior.
[0072] Therefore, the incorporation of electric heating elements or a heated chamber into the artificial vagina is an innovation designed to more accurately simulate the natural conditions of the female reproductive tract, improving both the quality of the collected semen and the efficiency of the collection process. By maintaining an appropriate temperature, these heating elements ensure that the semen remains viable and of high quality, which is essential for assisted reproduction and genetic improvement programs in South American camelids.
[0073] The outer polyurethane foam covering (4) on the metal body (1) of the artificial vagina for semen collection in South American camelids has multiple uses that are crucial for the performance and effectiveness of the device.
[0074] First and foremost, the polyurethane foam acts as a thermal insulator. Since semen must be collected and maintained at a specific temperature to preserve its viability, the foam helps maintain this temperature constant. This insulation is particularly important in environments where temperatures can fluctuate, ensuring that the interior of the device remains in optimal conditions for semen collection and preservation.
[0075] Additionally, the polyurethane foam provides a layer of physical protection for the device. Handling during the semen collection process can be rigorous, and the foam helps protect the metal body (1) from accidental impact or damage. This not only increases the device's durability but also ensures its proper and safe operation over time.
[0076] Another advantage of polyurethane foam is its lightness and comfort to the touch. During the harvesting process, the device may need to be held or adjusted to different positions. The foam makes the device more manageable and easier to manipulate, which can improve process efficiency and reduce operator fatigue.
[0077] The polyurethane foam layer in the metal body (1) of the artificial vagina is a well-thought-out feature that improves the device's efficiency. It provides thermal insulation to maintain the proper temperature, physical protection to increase durability, and more comfortable and safe handling, all of which contribute to more successful and efficient semen collection in South American camelids.
[0078] In a preferred embodiment, a leather drawstring bag (10) is attachable over the sleeve (8) to protect the collection tube (9) from outside light. This bag (10) serves a crucial function: to protect the collection tube (9) from exposure to outside light. Light can negatively affect the quality and viability of the collected semen, so keeping it in the dark during the collection and storage process is essential. Leather, being a durable and opaque material, is ideal for this purpose. Furthermore, the drawstring design ensures that the bag can be securely fitted around the sleeve (8), thus providing effective protection and maintaining optimal conditions to preserve the integrity of the semen until further analysis or use in artificial insemination.
[0079] In another preferred embodiment, the inlet of the collecting tube (9) has a filtration device attached, preferably made of a fabric material, the function of the filtration device is to block the passage of impurities, contaminating elements or dead cells, allowing the liquid portion of the semen, including the "rich portion" containing the sperm, to pass into the collecting tube (9). The filtration helps to concentrate the healthiest and most mobile sperm, which increases the chances of success in insemination.
[0080] In another preferred embodiment, the covering, the cervix and the two ducts may be an integral, indivisible unit.
[0081] In another preferred embodiment, as mentioned above, a hermetic chamber, thermally insulated from the outside, is provided between the folds and the metal body. It is filled with a liquid, such as water, where the thermal insulation is provided by an inner layer of insulating material. The chamber is filled with a hot liquid that heats the camelid's penis.
[0082] In another preferred embodiment, the filled airtight chamber is a bag containing a heat-emitting gel activated by applying pressure or impact to the chamber. The friction between the penis and the bag generates sufficient pressure to release the gel's heat.
[0083] In the present invention, the term cervix should be understood as an intermediate cylindrical chamber that has an inner coating of a soft, elastic material, such as latex.
