[0012] Reference will now be made in detail to certain embodiments of the disclosed subject matter, examples of which are illustrated in part in the accompanying drawings. While the disclosed subject matter will be described in conjunction with the enumerated claims, it will be understood that the exemplified subject matter is not intended to limit the claims to the disclosed subject matter.

[0013] The present disclosure describes, among other things, a cosmetic formulation that has good Longwear and is lightweight. The cosmetic formulation can be used, for example, as a foundation. In an example, the cosmetic formulation can be a water in siliconeemulsion. The cosmetic formulation can include, for example, both a water dispersible or hydrophilic film former and an oil soluble film former. The cosmetic formulation can additionally include an emollient, and emulsifier, and a mattifying agent.

[0014] With conventional cosmetic products, a user typically chooses between a product that has a desired finish and a product that remains on the skin for long periods of time, such as an entire day. Although products may have a desired matte finish, a user may find themselves repeatedly reapplying the product throughout the day, as the product may also be inadvertently removed by sweat and contact with clothing or the like. On the other hand, typical long lasting cosmetic products may have a different sheen or finish than desired. Moreover, Longwear formulations can invertedly feel cakey or heavy, instead of lightweight.

[0015] The cosmetic formulation discussed herein can provide for a desired matte finish, long wear, and a lightweight finish in one product. For example, the cosmetic formulation can have a wear of 36 hours, but still provide a fresh, light feeling to the consumer using the cosmetic formulation. Moreover, the cosmetic formulation can have a matte finish. In some cases, the cosmetic formulation can additionally include sun protection.

[0016] Throughout this document, values expressed in a range format should be interpreted in a flexible manner to include not only the numerical values explicitly recited as the limits of the range, but also to include all the individual numerical values or sub-ranges encompassed within that range as if each numerical value and sub-range is explicitly recited. For example, a range of “about 0.1% to about 5%” or “about 0.1% to 5%” should be interpreted to include not just about 0.1% to about 5%, but also the individual values (e.g., 1%, 2%, 3%, and 4%) and the sub-ranges (e.g., 0.1% to 0.5%, 1.1% to 2.2%, 3.3% to 4.4%) within the indicated range. The statement “about X to Y” has the same meaning as “about X to about Y,” unless indicated otherwise. Likewise, the statement “about X, Y, or about Z” has the same meaning as “about X, about Y, or about Z,” unless indicated otherwise.

[0017] In this document, the terms “a,” “an,” or “the” are used to include one or more than one unless the context clearly dictates otherwise. The term “or” is used to refer to a nonexclusive “or” unless otherwise indicated. [0080] Method of Making Cosmetic Formulation

[0081] The instantly described cosmetic formulations can be made according to a variety of suitable methods. As an example, water and the ingredients in the water phase can be added to a beaker and exposed to low shear conditions (about 100 rpm) at room temperatures (about 25 °C). Other components such as pigments, emulsifiers, and the like can be added to create the oil phase. The water phase and the oil phase can be combined with the emulsifier to create the formulation.

[0082] Method of Using

[0083] The cosmetic formulation can be contained in an applicator assembly. A variety of conventional applicators are known in the art (e.g., sponges, brushes, wipes, blenders, or other applicators). Optionally, a user can apply the cosmetic formulation by hand. Whether applied by an applicator or by hand, the cosmetic formulation can be applied directly to the skin. The cosmetic formulation can be applied in a single layer, or in multiple layers to create the desired effect. The cosmetic formulation can be blended and shaped by the user on the skin to create the desired coverage.

[0084] Optionally, the cosmetic formulation can be used with a variety of other cosmetic products, such as but not limited to skin care compositions, other foundations or concealers, other types of color cosmetic formulations such as blush, bronzer, or highlighter, among others. Each of these can be combined, blended, or adjusted during applicator before, after, or simultaneously with the cosmetic formulation discussed herein, to provide the desired makeup look.

[0085] EXAMPLES

[0086] Example 1. Cosmetic Formulation

[0087] For each of the Examples below, a sample cosmetic formulation was produced with the following formulation, except where otherwise noted:

[0088] Table 2. Sample cosmetic formulation.

[0089] The following modified samples were produced for testing on Crockmeter (for wear), for tack, and for viscosity:

[0090] Table 3. Samples for testing, percentages are approximate .

[0091] LMU 90 was made with the formulation described in Table 2 without modification. LMU 106 was made with the formulation described in Table 2, but replaced the sodium chloride with magnesium sulfate, and increased Bentone. LMU 107, LMU 108, and LMU 109, The result of this testing is discussed below in Examples 2-4.

[0092] For LMU 131, the LMU 106 formulation was modified to reduce the amount of Vegelight (the emulsifier) and corresponding increase the solvents; dimethicone / vinyl dimethicone crosspolymer replaced dimethicone crosspolymer as the gellant; the sourced emulsifier and silica were updated as noted in Table 3; and Baycusan was removed and replaced by TMS.

[0093] The sample FIX 019 was made as a primer sample, instead of a foundation sample. The sample FIX 019 started with the LMU 131 formulation, but reduced the amounts of yellow and red iron oxide pigments, increased the silica, and increased the dimethicone. / vinyl dimethicone crosspolymer. The FIX 019 additionally included 2.0% PVP.

[0094] Example 2, Crockmeter

[0095] Samples B to E in Table 3 were tested for wear through the user of a Crockmeter. The results of these tests are summarized below:

[0096] Table 4. Sample testing results.

[0097] These Samples were tested for wear (or “colorfastness”) in a rub test with a Crockmeter under a modified AATCC method 116-2013 -Colorfastness to Crocking. Several different rubbing insult types are tested: rub testing as a dry rub, with water, saline, and artificial sebum (squalene). Each of these liquids represents a different liquid that a user might come into contact with throughout the day while wear the formulation. Each liquid (water, saline, squalene) could potentially smear or otherwise transfer the formulation from the user’s lashes. Moreover, some of these liquids, such as water, could potentially be used at the end of the day to remove the formulation from the user’s lashes. Preferably, the formulation does not smear or transfer under the effects of these liquids, but is also easily removable at the end of the day, such as with the application of water by the user.

[0098] For the rub testing, each of the samples was prepared on line strips. One each of the dry, water, saline, and squalene slides were produced with each of the Samples. For the wet samples, a small 20 pL drop of the liquid (water, saline, or squalene) was pipetted onto the sample. The samples were then put into the Crockmeter according to the AATCC method. A manual crank of 10 was used. The rub testing of the samples on the Crockmeter was iterated.

[0099] The results of the Crockmeter testing of samples are depicted above in Table 4. A very low Crockmeter value can indicate the sample was difficult to remove, while a very high Crockmeter value can indicate the sample was prone to transfer.

[0100] Overall, the formulation LMU 107, with TMS as the second film former and the gel thickener, performed the best across the Crockmeter testing. The dry, water, andsaline values for sample LMU 107 were not prone to transfer. By comparison, the LMU 108 and LMU 109 samples with different film formers were more prone to transfer.

[0101] FIG. 1 depicts a graph of the additional wear testing results. Here, transfer of the formulation samples was tested between two cotton squares. A higher value in the graph of FIG. 1 depicts a higher transfer. The samples LMU 108 and LMU 109 with different film formers were very prone to transfer with high assessment values. The LMU 107 sample with the TMS film former was less prone to transfer, showing better wear.

[0102] Example 3, Tack

[0103] Samples B to E in Table 3 were tested for. The results of these tests are summarized below:

[0104] Table 5. Sample testing results.

[0105] These Samples were tested for tack using a texture analyzer. A steel probe was used on the film over the course of 75 minutes. More specifically, the samples were put on glass plates on top of a fine adjustment hotplate set to 32 degrees Celsius (to emulate skin temperature).

[0106] FIGS. 2 and 3 depict graphical results of the tack testing. FIG. 2 depicts the average tack by minute for each sample formulation. FIG. 3 depicts the average tack. Both samples LMU 106 and 107, each containing the TMS film former, performed well, building sufficient tack without going over a desired amount such as about 150. The results of the tack analysis show how tack can build over time.

[0107] Example 4, Viscosity and Playtime

[0108] LMU 90 was tested for viscosity. These Samples were tested for viscosity on a Brookfield viscometer with a TB spindle at 10 rpm for one minute. In addition to testing the samples LMU 90, sample of only acrylates, only TMS, only polyurethane, and a combination of acrylates and TMS were tested. The viscosity of the LMU 90 sample were in the range of 8,000 to 10,000 cP.

[0109] Viscosity was measured using the Helipath setting on a Brookfield viscometer with a T-spindle (TB) at a fixed rate (10 RPM) for a fixed amount of time (1 minute). Tack was measured with a TA.XT.Plus Texture Analyzer using a 7mm diameter probe. 100g of pressure are applied twice to the film every 2.5 minutes for 75 minutes and the pulling force (tackiness) is measured by the instrument. Playtime was extracted by calculating the tackiness over time.

[0110] The viscosity and tack results were graphed relative each other. FIGS. 4 and 5 depict both viscosity and tack, in addition to playtime, of the samples.

[0111] Example 5, Stability

[0112] Samples using different emulsifier systems will be tested for stability, including sample LMU 106. Comparative samples formulated similar to LMU 106, but with different types of emulsifiers, will also be tested for stability.

[0113] In the stability testing, the samples will be kept undisturbed under the same temperature and room conditions for predetermined periods of time. At predetermined intervals, the samples will be reviewed and assessed for stability. The samples will be reviewed visually for separation, texture, and coloration. The samples will also be tested for viscosity and tack as described in the above examples. It is anticipated that the LMU 106 sample, containing the desired emulsifier system, will perform well on stability analysis over time.Various Notes & Examples
