MULTIFUNCTIONAL DETERGENT COMPOSITIONS FOR LAUNDRY CLEANING, SANITIZING AND SOFTENING AND METHODS OF USE THEREOFTECHNICAL FIELD

[0001] The disclosure relates generally to multifunctional detergent compositions for laundry cleaning, sanitizing and softening, including compositions and methods particularly useful for self-service laundry applications such as those offered by smaller or limited service hotels and similar establishments. The compositions beneficially provide multifunctional benefits including laundry cleaning and disinfecting, and softening in some embodiments of the compositions, as well as sanitizing the interior surfaces of the laundry machine.BACKGROUND

[0002] The background description provided herein gives context for the present disclosure. Work of the presently named inventors, as well as aspects of the description that may not otherwise qualify as prior art at the time of filing, are neither expressly nor impliedly admitted as prior art.

[0003] Multifunctional laundry detergents to provided enhanced benefits to consumers and operates remain a priority. However, it is a challenge to maintain sanitizing efficacy of surfactants and quaternary ammonium compounds when combining formulations. The need for multifunctional laundry compositions that provide cleaning, sanitizing and softening, including the sanitizing of interior surfaces of the laundry machine is yet unmet in the market. This is particularly desirable for self-service laundry applications and / or consumer laundry applications, such as those offered by smaller or limited service hotels and similar establishments, that benefit from cleaning and sanitizing of the laundry machine during use therefore obviating the need for separate cleaning and / or sanitizing of the interior surfaces of the laundry machine.

[0004] It is therefore an object of this disclosure to provide multifunctional detergent compositions for laundry cleaning, sanitizing and softening.

[0007] Other objects, embodiments and advantages of this disclosure will be apparent to one skilled in the art in view of the following disclosure, the drawings, and the appended claims.SUMMARY

[0008] An advantage of the compositions and methods disclosed herein is that they are multifunctional for laundry cleaning, sanitizing and softening, as well as effective at cleaning the inside of the laundry machine itself. It is a further object, feature, and / or advantage of the present disclosure to provide multifunctional laundry detergent compositions to provide 2-in-1 or even 3-in-1 performance benefits.

[0009] According to some aspects of the present disclosure, a multifunctional laundry detergent composition comprises: a quaternary ammonium compound having carbon chain length less than 20; and a blend of branched nonionic alcohol ethoxylate surfactants having between about 1 and 10 EO; water and an organic solvent; and optionally a softening imidazoline quaternary ammonium compound; wherein the weight ratio of branched nonionic alcohol ethoxylate surfactants to the quaternary ammonium compound is from about 8: 1 to 1: 1.

[0010] According to some other aspects of the present disclosure, methods of laundering textiles and disinfecting a laundry machine comprises: contacting a composition as described herein or according to any one of claims 1-13 with water to generate a use solution to contact textiles in a laundry machine and disinfect interior surfaces of a laundry machine; and cleaning the textiles and disinfecting the interior surfaces of the laundry machine with an effective amount of the quaternary ammonium compound and blend of branched nonionic surfactants.

[0011] According to aspects of the disclosure, the 2-in-1 or even 3-in-1 performance benefits are achieved by combining an imidazoline softening quaternary ammonium compound that does not interfere with detergency and sanitizing efficacy of the additional surfactants in the compositions described herein.

[0122] METHODS OF USE

[0123] The methods described herein both clean laundry, e.g. textiles, while also disinfecting a laundry machine providing a 2-in-1 or multifunctional laundry detergent composition. The methods described herein can further soften laundry, e.g. textiles, while also cleaning the textiles and disinfecting a laundry machine providing a 3-in-1 or multifunctional laundry  detergent composition. As described herein the methods of cleaning laundry can include washing, cleaning and / or disinfecting the treated textiles. Beneficially, the methods can further include softening of textiles, as can be quantified either objectively or subjectively.

[0124] The compositions and methods are particularly suitable for cleaning soils that accumulate on any type of textiles, namely any item or article made from or including natural fabrics, synthetic fabrics, woven fabrics, non-woven fabrics, and knitted fabrics. The textile materials can include natural or synthetic fibers such as silk fibers, linen fibers, cotton fibers, hemp fibers, angora fibers, bamboo fibers, polyester fibers, polyamide fibers such as nylon, acrylic fibers, acetate fibers, wool, rayon, cashmere, satin, spandex, and blends thereof, including cotton and polyester blends. The fibers can be treated or untreated. Example treated fibers include those treated for flame retardancy. It should be understood that the term “linen” describes a type of material derived from flax plants that is often used in certain types of laundry items including bed sheets, pillowcases, towels, table linen, tablecloth, bar mops, and uniforms.

[0125] The methods of laundering textiles and disinfecting a laundry machine include contacting the compositions described herein with water to generate a use solution to contact textiles in the laundry machine as well as contact the interior surfaces of the laundry machine to disinfect the surfaces. Various types of laundry machines are suitable for use, including institutional and consumer laundry machines, as well as self-service laundry machines that are often available in limited service hotels and other locations for consumer use.

[0126] In embodiments, the compositions described can be provided as concentrate compositions or use solutions. In embodiments, a concentrate composition is employed and first contacts a water source to generate a use solution of the composition.

[0127] Any means of contacting can be used to place the textile surface in contact with the compositions, including, for example, soaking, spraying, dipping, wiping, or the like. Included within the scope of contacting described herein, the textile can also be soaked, including a pretreatment, with the compositions. As a result of the contacting step the textile is washed, and the soils removed. As referred to herein, the contacting of the textiles inside a laundry machine provides the dual benefit and step of contacting the interior surfaces of the laundry machine as well to disinfect these surfaces, providing the 2-in-1 or 3-in-1 benefits described herein.

[0128] In certain embodiments, a concentrate can be sprayed onto a textile surface or provided in water as part of a pre-treatment. The contacting time may vary about 10 seconds to six hours, for example, 1 minute to four hours, 10 minutes to two hours, 15 minutes to an hour, inclusive of all integers within this range. In another aspect, the pre-treatment may last as long as several hours (e.g., overnight soak) .

[0129] As described the method of cleaning may comprise a first step of diluting or creating a use solution (such as from a concentrate liquid composition) can also be included in the methods. An exemplary dilution step includes contacting the liquid concentrate composition with water or another suitable solvent.

[0130] More particularly, in a typical cleaning method, the washing process comprises a pre-wash or pre-soak where the textiles are wetted, and a pre-soak composition is added. The wash phase follows the pre-soak phase; the compositions described herein are added to the wash tank to facilitate soil removal. In some cases, a bleach phase follows the wash phase in order to remove oxidizable stains and whiten the textiles. Next, the rinsing phase removes all suspended soils. In some cases, a laundry sour is added in a souring or finishing phase to neutralize any residual alkalinity from the composition or complete and post-treatment of the textiles needed. In many cases, a fabric softener or other finishing chemical like a starch is also added in the finishing step. Finally, the extraction phase removes as much water from the wash tank and textiles as possible. In some cases, a wash cycle may have two rinse and extraction phases, i.e., a rinse cycle, an intermediate-extract cycle, a final rinse cycle, and a final extraction cycle. After the wash cycle is complete, the resulting wastewater is typically removed and discarded. Although the compositions are typically contacted with the textiles in a pre-treatment or wash phase, the compositions can be contacted with the textiles during any one or more parts of the wash cycle.

[0131] The compositions disclosed herein may be contacted with the textiles during any phase of the wash cycle. Preferably, the compositions are diluted with water and contacted with the textiles during the pre-soak / pre-wash phase or the wash phase, still more preferably during the wash phase. In some embodiments, the compositions are not added during the bleaching phase or the softening or souring phase.

[0132] When the compositions are diluted, they are diluted to a concentration of between about 0.1 ml / L to about 5 ml / L, preferably between about 1 ml / L to about 2 ml / L,

[0133] In an aspect, the compositions will contact the textile to be cleaned for a sufficient amount of time to remove the soils, including from a few seconds to a few hours, including all ranges therebetween. In an embodiment, the composition contacts the textiles for at least about 15 seconds, at least about 30 seconds, at least about 45 seconds, or at least about 60 seconds. In an embodiment, the composition contacts the textiles for at least about 1 minute, at least about 2 minutes, at least about 3 minutes, at least about 4 minutes, or at least about 5 minutes.

[0134] EXAMPLES

[0135] Embodiments of the present disclosure are further defined in the following non-limiting Examples. It should be understood that these Examples, while indicating certain embodiments of the disclosure, are given by way of illustration only. From the above discussion and these Examples, one skilled in the art can ascertain the essential characteristics of this disclosure, and without departing from the spirit and scope thereof, can make various changes and modifications of the embodiments of the disclosure to adapt it to various usages and conditions. Thus, various modifications of the embodiments of the disclosure, in addition to those shown and described herein, will be apparent to those skilled in the art from the foregoing description. Such modifications are also intended to fall within the scope of the appended claims.

[0136] The following instruments and materials utilized in the Examples:

[0137] Tergotometer.

[0138] UltraScan VIS spectrophotometer.

[0139] Soiled fabrics: either commercial or laboratory prepared soiled cloth.

[0140] Commercial Prepared Soiled Fabrics including Testfabrics cotton –graphite / lanolin soiled.

[0141] The following procedure was utilized for both Examples 1 and 2 to perform a wash performance test on the various test fabrics. Each cloth had various types of stains and soil types, as described in Table 3 below.

[0142] Each test fabric was cut, specifically two for each test condition. Additionally, each fabric had a gray swatch and white swatch. Each swatch was also numbered for each identification. Each fabric was folded into four sections.

[0143] Each swatch was read and depending on the objective of the test, a type of reading was selected: L, a, b, WI E313.

[0144] The tergotometers were turned on and set to a standard rpm of 100, and water hardness was selected. Any soft water was checked for hardness level. 1000 ml of water was placed into the tergotometer pots at a desired temperature of 40 degrees Celsius and the desired water hardness of a soft water source.

[0145] The desired amount of each detergent was added into one of the pots within the tergotometers and agitated until dissolved. Two soiled swatches of the same type were placed in each pot and agitated for ten minutes before agitation was turned off. The swatches were removed and rinsed thoroughly in cool tap water before air drying them. Then the swatches were re-read under the HunterLab UltraScan.

[0159] EXAMPLE 1

[0160] Other swatches chosen for wash wheel testing included the following as shown in Table 3.

[0161] TABLE 3

[0162] The first formulation of a multifunctional laundry detergent composition was tested utilizing a blend of branched surfactant compounds and a quaternary ammonium compound as shown in Table 4. After confirming the efficacy of this formula in Table 4 in various laundry applications, further testing as described to evaluate the role of combinations of the surfactants was conducted using the base formulation shown in Table 4.

[0163] The surfactant compounds referred to in Figure 1 as TO7 and TO9 are TO7, and TO9, respectively which are isotridecanol ethoxylate (7 EO) and isotridecyl alcohol ethoxylate (9 EO) . The surfactant compound referred to in Figure 1 as TO5 is a 5 mole EO branched alcohol polyethylene glycol ether TO5. These surfactants are formulated within the ranges of the composition of Table 4, where the quaternary ammonium compound was a blend of Di-C8-10-Alkyldimethyl Chloride and Benzyl-C12-16-Alkyldimmethyl Chloride.

[0164] TABLE 4

[0165] Figure 1 shows the testing of the 2-in-1 detergency of different surfactant mixtures in the multifunctional laundry detergent composition. On each textile substrate, each sample was stained with the various soils and then tested with the above formulation with variations in surfactant mixtures as described in the figure. The graph shows the percentage of soil removed based off calculations photometric reflection value of each swatch using the CIELAB protocol (specifically the L*, a*, and b*values as outlined above) and soil removal equation outlined previously.

[0166] Formulas T07, T05, T09 were tested using the procedure outlined above as depicted in Figure 1. The X axis denotes that each formula was dosed at the same e amount, 8g / L, into each pot of the tergotometer. The formulations fitting within the scope of Table 4 were varied based on the amount of TO7 / TO5 surfactants in the blend. For example, T07 / T05 16 / 8 denotes that T07 was dosed in the amount of 16%and T05 was dosed in 8%into the formula. The combination of T09 / T05 16 / 8 proved to be the most effective for all three soil stains used including sebum, protein and carbon black.

[0167] EXAMPLE 2

[0168] Disinfectant efficacy of 2 in 1 and 3 in 1 formulations were further evaluated as shown in Table 5, where the quaternary ammonium compound was a blend of Di-C8-10-Alkyldimethyl Chloride and Benzyl-C12-16-Alkyldimmethyl Chloride.

[0169] TABLE 5

[0170] Table 5 shows the testing of the base formulas 1 and 2 alone or in combination with T07 or T09. Base formula 1 is shown in Table 6 with a single nonionic surfactant and base formula 2 is shown in Table 7 with a blend of nonionic surfactants. In this example, the base formula 1 had the most effectiveness against E. Coli when combined with T07 and T09.

[0171] The disinfecting data further confirms that the laundry machine interior surface is disinfected. As shown in Table 5, the reduction log above 5 provides sanitizing efficacy for hard surfaces, including laundry machine interior surface.

[0172] Table 6 describes the chemical composition of Base Formula 1, where the quaternary ammonium compound was a blend of Di-C8-10-Alkyldimethyl Chloride and Benzyl-C12-16-Alkyldimmethyl Chloride.

[0173] TABLE 6

[0174] Table 7 describes the chemical composition of Base Formula 2, where the quaternary ammonium compound was a blend of Di-C8-10-Alkyldimethyl Chloride and Benzyl-C12-16-Alkyldimmethyl Chloride.

[0175] TABLE 7

[0176] The data summarized in Table 5 confirms that T07 or T09 in combination with T05 have a boost on the quaternary ammonium compound disinfection efficacy.

[0177] EXAMPLE 3

[0178] Utilizing the same procedures detailed above, a second series of tests was conducted utilizing a 3-in-1 multifunctional laundry detergent composition as shown in Table 7, where the quaternary ammonium compound was a blend of Di-C8-10-Alkyldimethyl Chloride and Benzyl-C12-16-Alkyldimmethyl Chloride.

[0179] Figure 2 shows the results of testing run using the formulation outlined in Table 7. Figure 2 demonstrates the effectiveness of T07 / T05 16 / 8 with a softening imidazoline quaternary ammonium compound proved to be more effective for soil removal overall.

[0180] As previously shown above, Table 5 also mentions the Base Formula 2, which is the 3-in-1 multifunctional liquid detergent composition. Table 8 demonstrates the chemical composition of Base Formula 2, including an imidazoline quaternary ammonium softener in addition to the chemical composition of base formula 1. Once again, Base Formula 2 also has a higher efficacy against E. Coli when combined with T07 or T09.

[0181] TABLE 8

[0182] Figure 3 shows the testing of the 3-in-1 detergency efficacy of varied surfactant mixtures with a different wt-%. Specifically, using the same calculations detailed above, Formulas T07, T05, T09 were tested using the procedure outlined above. The X axis denotes that each formula was dosed differently. For example, T07 / T05, 16 / 8 denotes that T07 was dosed in the amount of 16%and T05 was dosed in 8%. Once again, the combination of T09 / T05 16 / 8 proved to be the most effective for all three soil stains used including sebum, protein and carbon black.

[0183] In the testing of the 3-in-1 products described in Example 2 additional panel evaluations were made to assess softness of the compositions compared to the controls. In all instances the softness was confirmed as improved over control by subjective manual assessment.

[0184] It is to be understood that while the invention has been described in conjunction with the detailed description thereof, the foregoing description is intended to illustrate, and not limit the scope of the invention, which is defined by the scope of the appended claims. Other embodiments, advantages, and modifications are within the scope of the following claims. Any reference to accompanying drawings which form a part hereof, are shown, by way of illustration only. It is understood that other embodiments may be utilized and structural changes may be made without departing from the scope of the present disclosure.
